Palin does not directly answer the question.
Palin does not directly answer the question.

ST. LOUIS, Missouri (CNN) - Palin veers off course - the question is about helping consumers with crushing debt, and she's responding with energy policy. Politicians frequently change the subject, but this was a pretty obvious 180.

Palin does not have a grasp of the issues. It is obvious by her inability to answer any questions.

Noel D   October 2nd, 2008 9:41 pm ET

She is so rehearsed for this debate...talking "straight" to the American people?! How is that possible when she won't even answer a simple question?!

Sara   October 2nd, 2008 9:41 pm ET

I can't stand how she gets breathy when she talks - sounds like she is talking to elementary kids.... does she think we are stupid??

Jack   October 2nd, 2008 9:41 pm ET

nothing new, keeps changing the subject, again and again

J. Bean   October 2nd, 2008 9:40 pm ET

Definitely–wasn't that her plan? She keeps trying to bring it back to a few things that she does know about.

Does this run 1.5 hrs.? So we are about halfway done?

Right now, on a scale of 1-10 (10 being best), I would give Biden a 10 and Palin a 6 or 7.

He's doing perfect...not missed a step. She's not answering the questions (4-5 times) and has also lied at least twice.

Thom Ingram   October 2nd, 2008 9:40 pm ET

If Palin keeps sidestepping and doing 180s' to the questions asked she'll be tap dancing pretty shortly now.

Pam   October 2nd, 2008 9:40 pm ET

Maybe she would do better On "Dancing with the Stars" she loves to Sidestep..

gaptein   October 2nd, 2008 9:40 pm ET

Sarah Palin is simply reading from a prepared script that is why she keeps going back to energy, regardless of what the question is.

J.L.   October 2nd, 2008 9:40 pm ET

Seems like any question that Palin doesn't want to answer, she starts either talking about McCain's tax cuts or energy policies... wow...

Cyrus   October 2nd, 2008 9:40 pm ET

Did Palin just say that surge and counter-insurgency worked?

Josiah Rowe   October 2nd, 2008 9:40 pm ET

She's incapable of answering any question that diverts from her talking points.

Kristin   October 2nd, 2008 9:40 pm ET

But Candy – she's the Governor of Alaska. Energy capital of the country. Do you really expect her to stay on topic with the economy when she can talk about big oil? At least she did the 180 on a topic she can kind of talk to!

john l   October 2nd, 2008 9:40 pm ET

Palin is very good at dodging questions

latrice   October 2nd, 2008 9:39 pm ET

hasn't that been going on since she has been on the campaign??? not unless they ask something about alaska then she does have a human answer

California Gold   October 2nd, 2008 9:38 pm ET

Obvious? Perhaps the understatement of the debate.

How can Biden debate someone who won't answer questions. You can't.

amanda   October 2nd, 2008 9:38 pm ET

I love Fact check. She doesnt know the truth, only slogans, commercials and the lies that Mccain has spued.

green texan   October 2nd, 2008 9:38 pm ET

So does Biden, Candy. Are you watching the same debate?

blue in a sea of red   October 2nd, 2008 9:38 pm ET

she's trying so hard to win affection by talking about her family and friends. just answer the question, lady!

J. Edward   October 2nd, 2008 9:38 pm ET

This proves that Palin is way out of her league. She has yet to answer a question simply and clearly because she is programmed by the McCain group.

robert   October 2nd, 2008 9:38 pm ET

she's sidestepped most of the debate so far

Phil G., New York   October 2nd, 2008 9:38 pm ET

thank you i agree 100% she has lost my vote flat out. Whats the point of the debate if u choose ur own topic to talk about
This isn't jeopardy

Richie   October 2nd, 2008 9:38 pm ET

OMG - Did she just endorse same sex couples?

alexa   October 2nd, 2008 9:38 pm ET

I agree. It was obvious. I'd rather have her say something sound then talk about something she doesn't know.

TexasVet   October 2nd, 2008 9:38 pm ET

Ofcourse she changed the subject crushing debt was not in the script. Now why is that? Hmmm???? Out of touch perhaps?

THE BOTTOM LINE   October 2nd, 2008 9:38 pm ET

can we please get a straight answer from her....pleeease

Mark Cummings   October 2nd, 2008 9:38 pm ET

You hit it dead on Candy. It seems that the Palin's brain is a "bridge to nowhere."

Hillary Independent finally for Obama   October 2nd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

Why isn't Gwen insisting that Sarah answer the questions?

Is she reading her answers?

Zion   October 2nd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

Why does Palin keep talking about energy when it's not even the question.............Come on girl, even you can do better.

Crystal   October 2nd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

YOU BETCHA!!!!! Eventually she will stay on topic I think, maybe, Hopefully?

Dave   October 2nd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

Palin should drop out... this is ridiculous! I'm a long time Republican, and while I won't vote for Obama, I won't vote for a Palin.

CLS in VT   October 2nd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

180? No that would be a turn around–she veered of the course altogether.

Anthony   October 2nd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

I don't know if it's me or something but as I am watching the debate it seems questions are being answered to the American People by Sen Biden, then the answers to the questions are being answered with a question then an answer by Gov Palin. Answer the questions to the American Public who will be voting and stop thinking about the soccer moms with all due respect. Because this isn't about the soccor moms who put time in for there children this is about the American People not on 1 group but I America for all

Greg in Oshkosh   October 2nd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

She already said it's "her" issue. The only one she knows about...even a little.

witch   October 2nd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

She just can't answer them.................................

laura   October 2nd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

What's is wrong with her? Just answer a question and if you don't know the answer, say so. At least you'll look human and not robotic.

Mack   October 2nd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

I don't see this as a veer......energy independence is a crucial to everything...including the finicial strengths of this country.

Julia W.   October 2nd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

She is doing everything to stay to the talking points she remembers.

MM   October 2nd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

Palin veers off course .... again and again

kyle from auburn   October 2nd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

And this surprises no one

Working Mom   October 2nd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

Thank you Candy!!! She has side stepped and give yes or no answers to all of Gwen's question. Then she presents a topic she has a script for and goes on attack!

Richie   October 2nd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

This is her speciality. Say your speech. Pay no attention to the question.

Shane   October 2nd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

Thats what Palin does...she invented the sidestep...

Lissa in Montreal   October 2nd, 2008 9:36 pm ET

She's got about 10 responses in her armory and is pulling out the one she thinks fits best to the question being asked.

"Red? Well, I have a pink sort of answer, how's that?"

Cindy   October 2nd, 2008 9:36 pm ET

Tina Fey's going to have a field day...

sean   October 2nd, 2008 9:36 pm ET

Shes not too bright. Maybe back to the beauty pageant?

AD   October 2nd, 2008 9:36 pm ET

And that's a surprise?

I didn't think so.
