Obama takes campaign to the iPhone

Barack Obama's campaign recently launched a new Apple iPhone application.
Barack Obama's campaign recently launched a new Apple iPhone application.

(CNN) - Sen. Barack Obama, who has made his virtual campaign as much of a priority as its real-world counterpart, is making a play for iPhone users.

Over the weekend, the campaign launched a volunteer-developed application that iPhoners can download. "Obama '08", which is free through the Apple.com iTunes store, features several options aimed at supporters and undecided voters.

– The "Call Friends" tab allows users to use their electronic phonebook to call contacts, with top priority given to contacts in local and battleground states. The application tells users no personal data or contacts will be uploaded or stored — though the number of calls made will be “uploaded anonymously."

– The "Get Involved" option gives iPhoners the phone numbers to Obama campaign
headquarters around the country, depending on where the user is located; they can also find out about “Local Events.” Both functions are based on the GPS feature of the phone.

– iPhone users can "Receive Updates" through e-mail and text message alerts.

– "News" features statements put out by the Obama campaign, separated by national and local categories; "Media" features links to YouTube videos put out by the campaign; Users are able to directly watch the video, as well as e-mail it out.

– An "Issue" feature highlights all of Obama's positions, from civil rights to Iraq.

Naturally, like any good campaign tool, the Obama iPhone application comes complete with a fundraising pitch.

At the bottom of the application menu, there's a green "Donate" button. Once clicked, a disclaimer appears: "You are about to dial the Obama for America donation hotline, exiting this application. Contributions are not tax deductible for federal income tax purposes."

And for users who may feel this campaign season will never end, a particularly re-assuring feature pops up right next to the donate button: An election countdown.

Great idea. Remember though that Obama needs to reach people who may not know what an iPhone is, or certainly don't own one.

CNN I hope you post this message instead of making it wait for moderation.

If there ever was a 21st Century President it is Barack Obama!!! This shows a TRUE leader ahead of his time and knowledgable of new technology!! He's definately got what it takes, and he's got what this country needs. As for "Grampa" McShame and "Annie Oakley" Palin, they need to come out of the "Dark Ages".......................World War I ended DECADES ago!!!

Well this proves my point about Obama and his followers to the T. First of all how does this actually help any real world problem america faces. Second, I hate to break it to most stupid americans but apple electronics are the most worthless consumer electronics on the planet. They are more of a status symbol than an electronic product (which is fitting for most liberals). But hey look at the bright side......you can get your spin directly from the source. How groundbreaking!

This is exactly the type of innovation and forward thinking that we will need to move America in a new direction! You can't deal with old problems in the same old way. Voter engagement and enthusiam WILL BE a determining factor in this election. I applaud Obama for engaging America and I know we can expect bold new ideas when it comes to strenthening our econmony and America.

    Obama gets it! Awesome!

Obama is not going to do much for the "Country" that is for sure. He is far from being a so called genius. He beat Clinton because he had all kinds of dem. help to run her into the ground. Without their backing he would never have gotten where he is. He is a fake and God help us if he gets into office and has to start "leading the Country". He will crying help the first day in office. He has less experienc than Palin!! Joe Biden might as well be the President because Obama will begging him for help right from the start. No glory for you Joe – just the behind the scenes babysitting Obama.

Many voters are so hell-bent on change that they would elect the devil himself if he had a "D" after his name and would be touting his expertise on global warming.

What do you expect from Obama, he is used to phoning it in. He will be lying on that beach in Hawaii while all his advisors do the work for him. This is the Change he has been touting all these months.

You people are swayed by the shallowest things. Ooh. Someone in his campaign knows how to text. Big woo. This has nothing to do with whether he is with it or can lead or anything. At best, it shows marketing acumen. That has NOTHING to do with his qualifications for being president. Most of the people I know who are tech saavy in non-tech jobs aren't very good at their real jobs.

  20. Lynn: 60 yr old white Obama supporter

At a time of economic crisis all McCain can offer at smear ads, repeated lies and whining. McCain's actions during the leadup to the vote in the senate reveals a man who can't multitask, doesn't have a political base and lacks the temperment to deal with a crisis.

His recent ad about Biden's "gaffes" is laughable when one considers his own as well as his erratic behaviour, and his tendency to blame others for his lack of success.

Time to leave the 20th century behind and look to the future!!

Bidan was using campaign money for his lawn work at his house and CNN is not reporting about it. If it was Palin it would be allover the news. MSM is at its lowest point.

Reporter: Do you know what an Iphone is?

John McCain: "Yes sir, I know the fundamentals because it is fundamentally fundamentalist."

    Reporter: "So, Iphone?"

John McCain: "Yeah, and I phone you later. Fundamentally, of course."
