Joe Biden sends off his son's National Guard unit.

DOVER, Delaware (CNN) – Joe Biden spoke briefly but emotionally Friday morning at the deployment ceremony for his son Beau’s Iraq-bound National Guard unit.

“I’ve come here many times before,” Biden told the 261st Signal Brigade as they stood in formation. “As a Delawarean, as a United States senator. But today I come as you prepare to deploy as a father. A father who got some sage advice from his son this morning. “Dad, keep it short, we’re in formation.

“I always listen to my general,” he continued. “So let me simply say, like all of the family members that are here today gathered on this green, my heart is full of love and pride.”

Biden didn’t get as choked up as he has in the past when talking about his family, but did show the emotion often seen on the campaign trail; his two-and-a-half minute remarks were filled with pregnant pauses, and delivered with a shaky voice. Biden wore his trademark aviator sunglasses during the entire event, except when speaking.

Thirty-nine-year-old Beau - a captain in the National Guard, and Delaware’s attorney general — is not immediately leaving for Iraq. He spends Friday and Saturday at home with his family before heading to Fort Bliss, Texas for additional training with his unit that will ship out for a year-long tour of duty in six to eight weeks.

Once in Iraq, Beau will be a prosecutor enforcing the Unified Code of Military Conduct in a unit that will provide communications for U.S. forces in the country.

Sarah Palin’s son Track deployed to Iraq September 11, a fact that Biden referenced in his closing remarks at Thursday night’s debate: "For both of us, selfishly, may God protect our troops."

As the mother of a son leaving for Iraq in two weeks I am heart broken and devastated that he may lose his life for a cause totally distorted by my own government for the benefit of the American oil cartel. I am also reminded that it isn't just my child or other young men and women from America who may lose their lives. Parents in every nation that believed in the misrepresentations made by THIS president have or will pay a price for our actions with their children as well. Mr. Bush you should have been impeached for your actions. And just in case you don't remember the definition of the word, it is "to charge (a public official) before a competent tribunal with misconduct in office".

Thank God Mr. Obama is willing to step up, set a date and walk away. Please make your voice heard America, its time for intelligence in Washington. Our country can't survive four more years of "good old boys and girls".

Yes, the rest of us is very concerned that Sarah Palin is even being considered as a potential VP.

Cheerleader, yes, maybe a PR manager, but a VP? Is being objective and honest no longer an option for a Republican?

Good luck.

By the Way   October 3rd, 2008 4:10 pm ET

To all of you who are wishing Beau GOD's blessing....

GOD created everyone and everything. All humans were made by
GOD. We human beings destroy each other and then pretend that we are doing it with GOD's blessing. To you I say.. GOD bless everyone.

@ DEBBY: the war with Iraq IS a mistake, the war has bankrupted our Nation!

If you do not think so, then what do you call spending........$10 BILLION a month?

When our National Debt is $10 TRILLION, almost tripled by Bush/Cheney & McCain!

The disaster our Nation is facing all goes back to Iraq, and spending money we do not have!

McCain is too old   October 3rd, 2008 4:08 pm ET

No Hillary = No Obama-

Why don't you take your dimestore psychology and stick it where the sun doesn't shine...ALASKA!!!!

Debbi   October 3rd, 2008 4:07 pm ET

Wow, I think we can rest easy that Joe Biden can run the country very well if anything ever happened to Obama. In this day and age, one can never be certain that we are safe here in America. I would be extremely worried if Mrs. Palin became President because she would be more concerned about cheering her hockey team than dealing with Palestinians and extremists on a Saturday afternoon. Not that someone can do both, but for the next 4 years we have got to have someone who can focus on the world around us not just bounce babies on her knee.

AC   October 3rd, 2008 4:05 pm ET

God Bless you & your family, Beau! Thank you for our FREEDOM!!
Obama/Biden '08!!

dave   October 3rd, 2008 4:00 pm ET

I, too, agree that she is not being a good mother to have that infant up that late. I did notice that he was trying to sleep. Why would any parent do that to a baby? I boggles my mind!

But I have other issues concerning her and her parenting style or lack thereof. I also question who that baby really belongs to ... I'm just having a hard time believing Sarah could be in labor on an airplane for hours and the stewardesses didn't have a clue she was even pregnant. I just can't buy the fact that when she was 7 months pregnant nobody, including the people she worked with, knew ... or that after having 4 other children she didn't look pregnant at the age of 44 ... I just don't trust the McCain campaign because I think they would rather make a good story into a better one by fudging the truth a tiny bit. All you have to do is remember is Cindy claiming Mother Theresa asked her to take the 2 babies back to the states, one of which she adopted, when it was actually other nuns that asked. There again, making a good story better by fudging the facts a little. Its not like the McCain camp hasn't done it before.

Northern Exposure   October 3rd, 2008 4:00 pm ET

Thanks Joe for being the only one who actually participated th the debate. You were thoughtful and respected the format. Palin spent 90 minutes spewing her talking points right off those cliff notes on the podium and having total disregard for the debate format. I guess you know how follow the rules.

kerry   October 3rd, 2008 3:59 pm ET

Palin only repeated what she learned this week

xx   October 3rd, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Joe Biden was able to more effectively speak to Obama's plans to benefit the American people. Sarah Palin was a cheerleader for McSame.

There is no help or hope for the Republican ticket. They are doomed and tonight's debate has sealed it.

VB Lincoln Park NJ   October 3rd, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Here's to ALL the troops in Iraq coming home safely.

There is no question that Joe Biden came off better last night, as all Gov. Barbie could do was repeat staged talking points.

Biden had a better command of facts. Perhaps, if we deregulated them (the facts) Palin's folksy quips would have more substance.

fred   October 3rd, 2008 3:54 pm ET

He made a clear distinction between Obama (change) and McCain/Bush (same). Palin failed to separate Bush from McCain.

carol   October 3rd, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Hands down smokin Joe did his job, supported our next prez with honor and wisdom far beyond his opponent!

Karen   October 3rd, 2008 3:53 pm ET

I fell sorry for Biden because Beau is the son that survive the car wreck many years ago that killed Biden's wife and daughter... NOW that son (Beau) is being deployed to IRAQ which none of our troops should have been over there in the first place. I'm keeping Biden and Palin son in my prayers even though Palin believe in keeping the troops over in Iraq forever.. It's time to bring these young men and women home...

To hell with McCain/Palin nonsense and stupidity. Last night, Palin sounded scripted. She was winking at the camera, what's next a little thigh action? and who the hell gives a shout out to third graders in the middle of a debate. Palin skipped over some of the questions and answer the questions she was comfortable with and NOW she's blaming Katie Couric for asking common sense questions. WOW.

Biden was clear, concise and to the point and I like that a lot.

Debby-

I am a desert storm vet. I have a son in Iraq. I am opposed to the Iraq war. I'm disgusted when people like you question my patriotism or that of Joe Biden's. I'm disgusted that republicans spin things to make it seem like I am not a patriot because I call BS when I need to. I do not want my son to die in vein because people like you are brainwashed into thinking you know what you are talking about when you have clearly not been there.

Shame on you.

Roberto-Nevada   October 3rd, 2008 3:49 pm ET

Best of Luck to Joe Biden and his son! Joe (and no, that's not six pack Joe) clearly won the debate last night. What a contrast between a person with warmth, sincerity, and charisma and a vacant reptile. Sara Palin's cold, snakelike stare sends shivers!

Joel   October 3rd, 2008 3:39 pm ET

Whats a Maverick? 'John McCain is the only one in this race that has ever really fought for you' I think not, I find it impossible to believe that Jon McCain had an African American like me on his mind back then, because all I really have to do is look at his Civil Right's Record and that would give me a good idea of rather or not he was fighting for me, however I can't because he doesn't have one.

Like a true republican I guess you suspended your brain when you blog. Since you are the Iraq war expert please tell me why we went to Iraq, do not say 9/11, WMD's or 10 yrs after the first gulf war Bush discovered Saddam was a threat. When you answer why we are there, tell me what we will win when we leave?

Great job! Joe.

I just read that Dick Morris judged Palin the winner. How many times has this man changed his position? He was anti-Hillary until Obama won and now says anything to retain his position on Fox. I know that the folks at Fox can barely breathe. An Obama – Biden victory would see the end of their dominance in cable news and consequently less revenues and fewer analysts........

Do you all remember when Joe Biden said that Obama had no foreign experience?? do you all remember when Joe Biden was against Obama for not funding the troops and called out Obama on it???

Geeee now look at what Joe Biden is saying about Obama now..hmmmm.....hypocrite!!!!

LiberalChris   October 3rd, 2008 3:32 pm ET

I myself have deployed over there. I know it is not at all safe and anything can happen, even to a JAG officer. I wish your son and his unit a successful deployment and a safe return.

I was really impressed last night with you Sen. Biden. You stuck to the talking points and answered the questions directly, unlike Sarah "Can I Call You Joe?" Palin. I noticed when she started calling you Sen. Biden that she was getting pissed.

And oh yeah, McCain/Palin, IT IS OVER!!! The Michigan debacle is just a sign of things to come for the next few weeks. If you can't win the Reagan Democrats, you don't stand a snowball's chance of winning the presidency.

martha   October 3rd, 2008 3:05 pm ET

I thought I was the only one thinking this! I understand that the McCain people know that her family "connects" with the public, but can't they at least let the baby be safe in his snuggy bed at that hour as he should be. He is, after all, not much older than an infant. The sister lurching around the stage with the baby in her arms (no support of the back) looked pretty dangerous too! Back in the 70's and 80's I was a single mother and if I was out late at a business meeting etc, my young children were home like they should have been. It's pretty bad when a campaign uses babies!!!

vicky   October 3rd, 2008 3:04 pm ET

Obama a Pirate not a Patriot   October 3rd, 2008 3:04 pm ET

It gets really personal now doesn't it Joe. The men who are fighting for this country, most of them, just want to be with their families and be safe. I believe that they all want to win. What many of you don't feel, is
that The soldiers are AMERICA'S TEAM. They are fighting the super bowl of their lives. The least we can do is stand up and cheer for them.
When Barak said our guys were air-raiding villages and killing civilians,
he made us sound worse than the mafia. How could a true patriot be
so disdainful of the sweat, blood and tears of our great soldiers.
I am proud of Patriot McCain, and Patriot Palin, they have always been Proud of America, and they will bring our boys home with honor.

Her grammer is terrible and she is so confused. I don't fault her wanting to succeed but why not raise her family first? Gail   October 3rd, 2008 3:01 pm ET

It's a pretty sad statement about the vice presidential debate that Sarah Palin's success was that she didn't fall flat on her face. With the immense difficulties facing this country, we need an experienced Vice President, not someone who has absolutely no domestic and foreign policy experience. She has no understanding of the complexity of the issues facing this country. Joe Biden spoke knowledgeably about the issues and totally outstripped Sarah Palin. Joe Biden won by a landslide. McCain made a huge blunder choosing her as his running mate.

Dick Morris is not exactly an objective source-and by the way do a little research into just who owns most of the so-called "liberal media" in this country

Casey-Pa   October 3rd, 2008 2:50 pm ET

Senator Biden looked Presidential during the debate. He may be the most qualified VP in the history of our country.

Richie   October 3rd, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Biden talked facts and substance... Paline talked rhetoric

AL   October 3rd, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Joe Biden,
I have had the privilege of sitting in an audience twice when you were speaking in Scranton. The first time was during the Kerry campaign and the early stages of the war. You spoke words of encouragement and made everyone in that room feel safe and gave us hope. You also give words of encouragement and make the american people feel there is a light at the end of this dark tunnel everyday on the campaign trail.
I will pray for your son Beau and all the soldiers fighthing for our freedom be kept safe and come home soon.
God Blees America – God Bless you and your family

Biden debated with RECORDS but Palin shouted with lies pushed into her head during her training sessions. Further both of their sons are in Iraq. I hope Obama/Biden combine bring those young guys home safe!

Ben   October 3rd, 2008 2:48 pm ET

He really let us know what Obama is all about!

He made me approve Obama!!

Debby-

The Confederacy referred to the Civil War as "the cause." Given your racist statements about Senator Obama I suggest you stop living in the past...the South LOST....or go and iron your white sheet already!

Thank you Biden family-

McCainLostMyVote   October 3rd, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Biden, you and your family is awesome. Our best wishes to your son and Palin's son. I don't like Palin since she does everythign for show. People like Debby who are racist will find ways to discredit others. Deep down racism prevails in some. But, a lot of white folks are beyond the silliness that Debby said in one of the comments below. God bless America and her soldiers and their families.

Ann   October 3rd, 2008 2:46 pm ET

He knows his stuff, is a real guy and will make a great VP.

This is a good event but that does not desrve Barack/Biden to be our president. Our country and troops will be in good hands if we elect John Mccain as our president.

Peterj   October 3rd, 2008 2:42 pm ET

He answered the questions and gave specifics, however, Palin as usual avoided questions.

Amy   October 3rd, 2008 2:41 pm ET

Tainopower,

Palin's son probably is behind the front line considering who his mommy is.

tina   October 3rd, 2008 2:40 pm ET

Joe Biden is a true statesman! He was clear, concise and stuck to the issues. He successfully linked McCain to Bush and didn't attack her

Jasmine in Germany   October 3rd, 2008 2:39 pm ET

No more unintelligent war-mongers in the White House, please vote Obama-Biden.

Single most important election I have ever Voted.

Thanx joe for your closing remark yesterday night!!

TAINOPOWER   October 3rd, 2008 2:37 pm ET

Yes I would to if my son was hiding behind a desk. He is a lawyer and probably his there to not to defend our soldiers. pailn son is in the front of the battle getting shot at. Biden son his getting a paper cut. Dick Morris Says last night that Palin 'Creamed' Biden. The liberal media will not give credit to palin for the debate. The people of this country is. Watch the polls. Not the liberal media control polls.

lesle   October 3rd, 2008 2:37 pm ET

He was wise and informed and sober and respectful. He was VERY honest and VERY well-informed unlike Palin who aped her talking points.

Debby: October 3rd, 2008 2:27 pm ET

I commend Biden's son but not Biden constantly criticizing the Iraq failure when he himself has a child who believes in the cause. I am sure his son would have another profession if he didn't think the war was a failure. I can't imagine a parent belittling a cause that his own child believes in one night, and then give him his blessing the next, especially when Biden kept pounding away how the war was a mistake.

Debby, Biden supports the troops...NOT the war. There's a difference. Understand that.

ben   October 3rd, 2008 2:37 pm ET

He withstood the barage of distortions from Palins about his and Obama's record without lowering himself to her level.

Joe-seeyouintheWH   October 3rd, 2008 2:36 pm ET

All substance no fluff for Biden.
All fluff and no answers for Palin!
Can't she just answer a question???

Joe Biden for VP   October 3rd, 2008 2:35 pm ET

Palin did not offer a single coherent response to a direct question from "Charlie", Katie Couric, or Gwen Ifill!

tulsa   October 3rd, 2008 2:34 pm ET

Debby
It is not "believing in the cause".... It is doing his duty. As a son of a 30 year Army enlisted man who served 2 tours in Korea and 2 tours in Nam I can tell you that "the cause" has nothing to do with it.

It is all about DUTY.

This is something that we should not have done. That is very clear now. We have wasted so much blood and treasure in a misguided war.

Senator Obama was one of the very few that were not swayed by the Bush fear tactics. He is the one who has shown real insight.

Peter   October 3rd, 2008 2:34 pm ET

Biden was in command of his responses with clear statements which were supported by facts and on message

Shawn T   October 3rd, 2008 2:33 pm ET

Biden...a true patriot.

He delievered a knockout performance just 1 day before his son is shipped off to the most dangerous war on earth right now.

Hats off.

Nick   October 3rd, 2008 2:33 pm ET

Biden talks of what he actually knows. Palins speaks what she was told to say.

A story was shared with me of Sen Biden at a fundraising event held in New York for those who stutter..Sen Biden took the time to speak with a young man just starting off in his singing career and the words of encouragement spoken by Sen Biden was not only felt by this young man but also by his mother...American you have an opportunity to embrace two excellent leaders in Sens. Biden and Obaman...how lucky you are but sadly how blinded some seem to be in their steadfast hold on their own prejudices which is obviously not allowing clear and sound judgement.......As a parent myself I understand your prayer in your debate closing Sen Biden...Prayers are extended to all parents whose children are fighting for their country.

Jan, Knoxville, TN   October 3rd, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Senator Biden: You were absolutely superb last night at the debate– what a wealth of knowledge and understanding of both foreign policy and domestic policy you exhibited. Can't say the same for your opponent, who didn't directly answer many of the questions and relied on winking and redneck phrases to get through the evening.

I pray your son will return home soon to find his Dad Vice President of the United States.

Sarah Palin has a son in the war as well and I'd recall CNN reporting on that, just another example of media bias!

May god protect all the sons and daughters!

Get elected and put an end to this sad waste of this country's finest.

Vegas Barbie for Obama   October 3rd, 2008 2:21 pm ET

While it was a brief speech, it was heartfelt, and also sweet when Sen. Biden said “I always listen to my general,” when prefacing his comments. May God Bless Beau and his fellow soldiers and my God Bless Obama & Biden as they wrap up these last few weeks before they win the general election!

zach   October 3rd, 2008 2:19 pm ET

What a great man, and what a great family...I'd be proud to have them in the White House...

...contrary to what Sarah Palin says/believes, I highly doubt Sen. Biden would EVER "wave the white-flag of surrender" in Iraq, as I'm sure he will always work for the benefit of not only his son, but all those in the armed forces.

Dr. Mimi De La Cruz for OBAMA   October 3rd, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Hey, can I call you Gwen? Heckuva job, Gwen!

I'll betcha' my opponents are a-wishing that you had a Maverick representin' every Joe Six-pack, hockey mom – bless their hearts – ya' know? Darn right, a maverick does a heckuva job, not just kinda good, but honest-to-goodness heckuva job! As one of my heroes, Donny Rumsfield, once told me, "Golly gee willickers, that's a peach of a pickle!". So yes, I know a little somethin' about oil up here in the only Arctic state ;-)
