McCain pulled out of Michigan.
McCain pulled out of Michigan.

(CNN) – John McCain’s decision to pull out of Michigan prompted the state Republican Party chairman to issue a desperate plea Friday for donations to help fund political activities the presidential campaign would likely have shouldered.

“I won’t sugar coat it; the McCain Campaign’s decision to pull out of Michigan is a tough blow,” Saul Anuzis, chairman of the Michigan Republican Party, wrote in an email fundraising solicitation to Republicans. “But we cannot let it deter us.”

The latest CNN poll of Michigan voters, released late last month, suggested Obama was holding on to his edge over McCain in the fight for the state’s 17 electoral votes. Among likely voters, Obama held a 5 point lead, 51 percent to 46 percent; among the larger sample of registered voters, the lead was 7 points. Obama had a 4 point advantage in the previous CNN poll in Michigan, conducted at the beginning of September.

Michigan has voted for the Democratic candidate in the last four presidential contests, though John Kerry's winning margin there over President Bush in 2004 was just 3 points.

McCain aides acknowledged Thursday that the campaign was shifting resources and money out of Michigan and directing them to states such as Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maine, among others. Anuzis said that McCain’s decision not to contest the state “leaves a tremendous hole in our ground campaign that we must now fill” in its fight for congressional, judicial, and state-level candidates.

In a note to supporters posted on the state party’s Web site, Anuzis disputed the McCain camp’s assessment of the Republican ticket’s chances in the state. The McCain campaign, he wrote, believes that “Other states ‘today’ offer a better opportunity for the campaign and they decided to shift their strategy. We do NOT agree.

“Michigan Republicans kicked into overdrive last night. We had a series of conference calls and meetings with activists and donors, coming up with our own plan on how to implement a ‘Michigan strategy’ for McCain and the rest of our ticket,” he said. “We will have a revised plan in effect by next week and are NOT conceding an inch to the Obama campaign or any Democrats in Michigan. This is a battleground state, the numbers always tighten up and we will bring the McCain campaign back to Michigan by our own efforts statewide.”

Noah "Just so all of you liberals know, the Drudge Report, which is widely regarded as the best source for news, has a poll for last night's debate: 76% say Palin won, only 22% think Biden won. VICTORY"

Regarded by whom? Readers of the Weekly World News and people who think Bill O is Jesus? And how was this poll run? Who responded? Drudge's rightwing fans? Yep, the folks who read Drudge. Real, real scientific, right? Just so YOU know, both CNN and CBS polls showed Biden the clear victor, both among independents, and all voters.

Oppose Zig Zag Express   October 3rd, 2008 2:00 pm ET

If all we have heard from the Republican party since their "convention" of insults is Palin...Palin...Palin, then the McCain campaign has no substance.

The stakes are too high this election year!!

Good ridance to bad rubbish in Michigan. I hope Ohio, Penn. and Florida give these slimeballs the shove off, and the rest of the country come Nov. 4th. God bless America!!!!!

Edward   October 3rd, 2008 2:00 pm ET

The thing is that he IS going to lose Florida, the African American vote alone can carry the state for Obama let alone all of the young voters who NEVER TURNED OUT for past elections where Republicans have inched by ... they WILL turn out.

Her presentation last night, i.e. repeat the same phrases for every question asked suggest either a) she did not understand the question or b) she new nothing of what she was being asked. Either way it means NOT READY anf FIT TO LEAD.
Her response was MORONIC. If the Republican team is elected we will be seing the end of US of A as we known it.

Old Guy   October 3rd, 2008 1:54 pm ET

Old John McCain talks about straight talk and then delivers a series of lies along with his goofy partner, it's no wonder he pulled out of Michigan.

Remember folks 8 years ago there was a $3 trillion dollar surplus and with the republicans in charge that has turned into a $10 trillion dollar debt.

John McCain was part of the republican elite that gave companies tax breaks to ship your jobs overseas and then gives you lip service.

Down the ticket republicans should go down the drain! You greedy sob's stole enough – VOTE DEMOCRAT ALL THE WAY!

Retirement Home   October 3rd, 2008 1:54 pm ET

The "ONLY" White House John McCain is going to is the Old Folks home for retirement. This dude is really screwy. Every day there is a new story about something impulsive he has done with his campaign. It almost to hard to keep up. This is if any one wants to.
I am starting to feel sorry for McCain. He is obviously starting to show signs of early dementia. What's with all the changes to the campaign day after day. On again, Off again, Dropping of Michigan. John McCain really needs to consult more with his political advisors before making such impulsive and erratic changes. He does not appear to be stable.

Carl from MI   October 3rd, 2008 1:54 pm ET

Hurray for my state!! Woohoo!!! Our economy here in this state is in the dumps, in part due to the slumping automotive industry and the balance of the blame goes to the BUSH ADMINISTRATION'S FAILED POLICIES!!

We Michiganders don't buy into McCain recently becoming an agent of change... we don't buy into his fake outrage on the subject of lipstick on a pig... and we definitely don't buy into Sarah Palin being intelligent enough and experienced enough to be a few heartbeats away from becoming POTUS. She's a joke... and we Michiganders know it and see right through her being a big, fat phony!!

WAKE UP, AMERICA!! VOTE SMART... NOT SENILE!!!!

Greg   October 3rd, 2008 1:53 pm ET

JC   October 3rd, 2008 1:53 pm ET

Noah,

The Drudge Report as a respected source of news? Really? If you truly believe that (and I suspect you don't), then I am extremely frightened. The poll on that website is an internet poll that you can vote in as many times as you like (hardly scientific and statistically unsound) and has already shifted to 70-28 since you posted your comment. Every other survey/poll/etc. gives the victory to Biden.

EyesWideOpen   October 3rd, 2008 1:52 pm ET

In regard to the comment left by "Noah", the Drudge Report is not considered the best place for news. In fact all it does is link to legitimate news sites. The Drudge Report is just a tool of right wing clowns.
As for as that poll "Noah" refers to, those results were posted on Drudge before the debate was even over! The debate was literally only half way done when those poll results were posted! Gimme a break! Drudge is a joke! I dare you to ever find more that one positive story about democrats on that site.

Karen   October 3rd, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Haters of Obama, don't blame him for what the leaders in your state did. If they did not move the primary dates your votes would have counted like everyone else. Take your issue up with the leaders of Michigan who failed you and didn't care what the outcome would be. You can't cry foul when things are not going your way.

Palin is not qualified to be VP and I believe they are better qualified people to be the Gov. of Alaska. She identifies with everyone just like her. The world is not made up of people that looks and believes like her and it is shameful to ignore the rest of America. I am not a hockey mom but I am a mother of 3 beautiful children who will only hurt under a McCain/Palin administration.

Susan, Newport   October 3rd, 2008 1:50 pm ET

Since I am not a lesbian, I was not impressed by Sara Palin's winking
and "enticing" charm. I was more interested in the issues in which
Joe Biden had command of , whereas Palin seemed to be reciting
partially from memory, and notes, from which she was throwing the
same points at different questions. What irks me the most is
her smart alecky demeanor to which her knowlege of the facts don't
match. I will vote Obama / Biden.

michael   October 3rd, 2008 1:49 pm ET

Politics is a huge game where "PERCEPTION" reigns supreme...I think the perception now is that McCain is starting a down slide from which he will have a very very hard time recovering from with only 4 weeks to go..pulling out of Michigan sends a huge message of "perception" to other states on the fence. I think this is another huge mistake ....to announce this publicly like that.

Palin is so out of touch! She said "John McCain has won many wars" Question, what wars has he one? Also, I felt insulted when she said "average six-pack Joe" Who is she referring to? I have never bought a six-pack in my life! Is this the type of trash we want making decisions for us in Washington? I think not. Even my 8 year old says she makes no sense!

John McCain Maze   October 3rd, 2008 1:46 pm ET

It is almost like a maze trying to keep up with the IMPULSIVE AND ERRATIC behavior of John McCain in the past weeks. What is going on? First he suspends his campaign. Goes to Washington and makes a fool out of himself. The campaign is on again. Then there is the Palin issue (poor Judgement call). Now he has pulled out of Michigan.............What duh? This is a first. Weeks before the election he is conceding Michigan. I wonder Does John McCain even take the time to discuss any of these impulsive self-destructive moves.

Andy from Michigan   October 3rd, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Michigan has constantly voted democratic and jobs have constantly left south to republican run states.

Our do nothing governor has finally got it and started giving tax breaks to companies that bring jobs into Michigan. Huh, sound familiar. So when you give businesses a reason to move into your state or country they come and create jobs. When you raise their taxes they leave. WOW what a thought. I have lived here my entire life and seen the negative effects of over taxing business. If Obama has it his way, the whole country will look like Michigan.

If you raise taxes on Exxon, they will either raise their prices or leave the country that has the 2nd highest corporate tax rate. Are they greedy? Sure! But you can't legislate morality.

MLH   October 3rd, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Sounds like counting on the Maverick hasn't been such a good idea for other Republicans in Michigan. Why would I think that counting on the Maverick would be such a good idea for me or my country?

If Obama is elected we are looking at the begining of the end of America. You can not tax America into prosperity. The governor of Michigan has made that case proof positive. You would think that UAW would be smart enough to know that.
It appears to me that folks are determined to put Obama in office because he is a black man, regardless of the damage he plans to do.
With Obama we will get higher taxes, higher unemployment, higher gas prices. If you vote Obama, you deserve what you get.

Comment to Noah

Don't know what the "Drudge" report is, but I'm certain it is not in touch with reality. Palin spouted off in her usual manner, speaking powerfully and with alacrity, while having little substance in much of her speech, and lies in the rest. She had the audacity to announce that she wasn't going to answer some of the questions at the beginning of the debate. At least she kept her word – she didn't answer many of them.

She's a piece of work alright. It's like she's a drone – she has no emotion, but she sure knows how to wink. Gosh, I think that's what makes a good VP – a person who winks.

Truly Mrs. Palin and some of republicans are in their own world. To even think that Mrs. Palin did well is absurd. Then again the expectation was so low. Imagine you are a teacher how would you grade a student who keeps giving the wrong answer, but trying to charm you with a smile or a wink. Listening to her made me wonder about our education system. It’s a shame that McCain wants people to believe she is ready to lead. I am not talking about experience obviously no one in these four is seeking “re-election” I am talking of her lack of substance. She was like a kindergarten kid. Because she was trained to say it’s a wonderful sunny day, she would not care if it were raining. So that was her mission last night, just got out there and said what she was trained to do.
She is really a “NEW KILLER”

Doug R.   October 3rd, 2008 1:40 pm ET

This is an example of John McCain not caring about all the jobs MI has lost and the record unemployment the state of Michigan is experiencing (the highest in the nation). He turns his back on the American citizens AND then asks for people to send him contributions. Go ahead Republican losers, send him contributions!!

Naturally this may hurt him even more in Michigan, where the implicit agreement was that he would bring back jobs if he were elected.

Wow, I feel so much better about her being a heartbeat away from controlling America's nuclear arsenal.

Sue in MI   October 3rd, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Hate to burst your bubble, Noah, but Obama is up in all but one poll in Florida as of Tuesday. And calling the Obama supporters dumb is one reason the Republicans will lose this election at all levels. From the convention on, all they have done is deride, make sarcastic comments, and make it clear that the Republican Party wants no help from anyone else, while the Democrats have been polite and inclusive. They chose Palin because she can be mean with a smile on her face, and someone really believed we wouldn't look past her winks to see-nothing there!
Can you, the intelligent conservative among us, name anything concrete that mcCain has planned for the US? Didn't think so.

You mean the same Drudge report that claimed that Bill Clinton had an illegitimate baby by someone who turned out to be a former prostitute, or that John Kerry had an affair with an intern?

My personal favorite was when Sid Blumenthal sued them for defamation and the ruling judge decided that Drudge was "neither a reporter, a journalist or newsgatherer but... as he admits himself, simply a purveyor of gossip".

During last nights debate Biden used Obama's name so few times I got the impression he thought he was the presidential candidate.Biden 's remark about being with Obama when he makes every decision, just reinforces the feeling that Obama is just a puppet of an old white Washington insider. We know that Biden will be calling all the shots, and nobody would have ever made him the president ,that's why the DNC handpicked their stooge Obama.

sherry in sc   October 3rd, 2008 1:35 pm ET

John McCain might as well face it – this election is being bought by Hollywod idiots, crazy terror countries and blinded, hypnotized people , and the MEDID (CNN AND CBS TO NAME TWO) who think Nobama is some sort of messiah.

Unless true-blooded, hard-working American citizens wake up and realize what Nobama is really about, then there is no hope whatsoever for the Unites States. In case no one has notices, he is just a half-black/half-white carbon copy of Bush himself. They are two of the most arrogant, self-serving, "think they are messiahs" men that have ever entered the political arena.

John McCain cares about this county – Sarah Palin cares about this country. Obivously no one remembers the democrats prior to Nobama's selection. Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton and even John Edwards did not have one good thing to say about him. They ALL, each and everyone of them talked about his inexperience, his ties to corrupt and evil gansters (Ayers, Wright, Renzko) and told the absolute truth THEN about Nobama. Now they are all kissing the ground he walks on. They are all wanting something from him or they are being forced to do this by the DNC. Surely to God they are not just that STUPID – but then again, we are talking about Biden, Clinton, Pelosi, Reid, CNN, CBS – maybe they are that stupid!!

Now go moderate and delete as you do with anything that is not probama. Just look at the posts above here and the proof is there. You are all extremely biased and in bed with Nobama.

Troopergate goes on
What you'll be reading about next weekend:
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — An investigator hired by Alaskan lawmakers to probe abuse-of-power allegations against Gov. Sarah Palin was free to finish his work by a deadline set for a week from Friday after a state judge dismissed a lawsuit seeking to block the probe.

The investigation is looking into whether Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee, and others pressured Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan to fire a state trooper who was involved in a contentious divorce from Palin's sister, and then fired Monegan when he wouldn't dismiss the trooper. Palin says Monegan was ousted over budget disagreements.

The Drudge Report is a news aggregate conservative website. The poll you speak of is an online poll on THAT site much like the polls on MSNBC or any other online polling. They aren't scientific or random – and therefore don't carry a lot of weight.

While I'm not disrespecing the Drudge Report, mainly it is for conservatives. So I would have been surprised if the poll wasn't turning out that way on that site.

John McCain is old with old ideas. if he were to run the country like he has run his own campaign how can anyone think the country will be better off?

Palin is the impressionable kid and John mCain's views and the neo-cons have destroyed her she has no clue what her views are now..

She said the VP needs more legislative power....give me a break... Chaney, Chaney, Chaney....

I dont really know much about this debate. As of what i heard, Palin didn't answer most of the questions. She got off of the subject on the questions. I also heard Palin was joking and playing alittle during the debate when it suppose to be serious. Of my opinion i think Biden is right for the position.

Saviour   October 3rd, 2008 1:26 pm ET

McCain P-L-E-A-S-E do this country a favor and be a maverick by pulling out completely and let Obama start cleaning up this mess.

J from DC   October 3rd, 2008 1:25 pm ET

I hope Obama supporters give him more this weekend. He deserves it. He has done the hard part. The rest of us must do ours. As for McCain, the republicans have always had more money than the Democrats. So don’t believe the hype.

Biden was all about the business. Palin proved that she could recite sentences. If you want a person who will follow the Bush doctrine, and pick up where the last eight years left off, then you want Palin. I think that Palin is a weak candidate. Biden is strictly business. I like that in a candidate. I want a business man or women with answers. If you can’t handle the business, don’t go into the office. Palin proved that she is NOT ready for the VP Office, no matter how many in the Republican Party says she is. They might want a puppet on a string for VP. I don’t. I want someone who is able to be SERIOUS, offers intelligent insight, make decisions, and get the job done. Biden was all of that and then some. Good job, Biden.

Amy, NY   October 3rd, 2008 1:25 pm ET

Can you pull out of OHIO too?...oh and in Florida as well if you don't mind; Thanks!

Mark   October 3rd, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Republicans know that if McCain loses Florida or Ohio...either one...he's done. They're upset about it, because they know McCain made some huge mistakes in his campaign. Choosing Palin, and the so-called campaign suspension...bad ideas, John. Guess he's learning that sometimes you can be too much of a maverick.

Robocop   October 3rd, 2008 1:22 pm ET

I think palin did a terrible job. She could not even speak about the future, she had to go into the past. We need someone that thinks bout the future. I like some one that thinks ahead of time so we have time to plan for it. Thats really what i thought of her speech

Last night's debate, as revealed by CNN's focus group, showed that the debate was the last piece for 'undecided' voters to largely make their decision. I would be amazed if after all the waffling on direction and message John has done over the last few months, people would actually pick him over Obama. Americans want and need a leader that is calm under pressure, a thoughtful thinker and stays focused. Both Hillary and Obama exhibited those qualities. McCain and Palin haven't. All we have left now are people who are tied to fear of a black man running the country which pretty much can't be helped. They will believe what they want, no matter how irrational it is. Let's hope there aren't too many of them out there that can find their polling places come November.

I find it hard to believe that anyone that watch the VP debate saw anything other than Sen. Biden eating Gov. Palin alive. To think anything other or to allow any of the pundits on cnn to say anything else means that you watched something else. She looked just as ignorant as she has all week long. That small town country girl , im just like you movie she tried to show last night didnt work. She has no idea what her own cadidates issues are. All her answers seam to sound like she had them written down and I know there is no way that they could have been writen down

I can understand why you and ur republican lackeys might wanna run this bate and switch, dog and pony act but, it doesnt appear to be working. McCain is innept and his running mate might have the same learning impediment that Bush has.

Yes, she reached out and touched me too but not in the same light as you. When Biden almost broke down, she said nothing. That was not a planned moment on his part and it is apparent that he is still in pain. Palin just smiled and winked at the camera...

Didn't like her when McCain chose her, like her even less now.

@Matt, oh poor dear, where have you been? Obama a socialist liberal? I love how the republicans keep batting around that socialist term as we are on the verge of a $850 BILLION bailout of wall street capitalists. The extra $150 BILLION added to appeal to House Republicans. Socialist can no longer be applied to just liberals when taxpayers are funding the largest Welfare for the Rich program ever.

Why do Republicans think that by going against your party that it makes you a good leader? In the USMC I was taught that you have to be a good follower before you can be a good leader. old white woman   October 3rd, 2008 1:14 pm ET

As you will know from the following, Biden impressed me last night. No more words are necessary.
I was pleasantly surprised by Palin last night. Although she didn't seem to know what the moderator was asking, she threw in answers anyway. Although she strings her words together without pause, and no periods, she at least didn't make too many mistakes.
She must have a good memory to remember all that the trainers are throwing at her.
I am most offended by her language. I don't think leaders of our country should be throwing around such words as "hecks" and "goshdarn" . I want them to at least appear to be educated and have a decent command of our language. Can you imagine her in high level discussions such as Candi enters into?
Also the constant grin and winking was very unpresidential. This country is not in a position where constant smiling is correct.

...no mind you. He didn't cry for main street, he didn't cry for the problems we're having, no no, he cried because he son was gong to leave for Iraq today.

Now, a funny thing is that apparently Obamabots were actually hoping Joe would have made Governor Palin cry at the debate. Yes, they don't deal in reality, otherwise they would have never really thought that possible. But they DID and thought that would be the nail in her coffin.

LB   October 3rd, 2008 1:09 pm ET

After a full week of the McCain camp working with Palin on difficult issues, Palin was only able to answer questions on about 5 different subjects. She said at the start she would not answer some questions, Now we know why, after 3 days of working with her the McCain camp had to concede that she was not knowledgeable or intelligent enough to only grasp the knowledge of 5 issues or less. Thus when asked a question she didn't know she reverted back to answer on of the other 5 topics she had studied.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   October 3rd, 2008 1:09 pm ET

McCain has wasted so much supporters money talking about Obama on the campaign trail until it's almost like he's been campaigning for Obama. The economy is the issue and McCain is stuck between a rock and hard place because Americans aren't interested in his lies and slander against Obama. Winnie in Montana   October 3rd, 2008 1:08 pm ET

People are tired of the Republicans running the country for the last eight years and I am referring to the entirety of the Republican party, including the platform they stand for. Yes, Democrats deserve some of the blame for the crises we find ourselves in. Yes, lenders and borrowers alike shoulder some of the blame for this economic mess. The Republicans, however, have blindly followed a leader with no foresight, no ability to reason, and a knack for turning the rest of the world against us.

Americans, by and large, do not want to be preached to about morals and family values. We can handle these things by ourselves, within our own family units. We want leaders to lead us into economic prosperity and world-wide respect again.

To those people who are angry about Hillary Clinton losing to Barack Obama – get over it. Do not punish the entire party, the entire country, because of sour grapes. Palin is NOT Hillary and will never be. As an example, the right of a woman to do what she needs to with her own reproductive health is paramount. This is not a matter that needs to be legislated by anyone, least of all the religious right and conservative Republicans.

well john your going to have to pull out, of florida, nevada, in a matter of a week from now ohio, but john if obama just gets florida that the game on your campain, about 80 % of the mistakes made in your campain, is mc cain him self . i expect to see him inplode any time now as his temper and his way of blameing everyone else but him . he will soon try a dooms day push , mc cain has sold his soul to get this job as a maverick, yet you all found out this week he lost that name real quick, when he voted on the bail out bill with over 1 billion in pork bills, mc cain went before the country and said " i will not be a part of any bill that has ear marks in it " then he went and voted for it. which ment again he was a maverick he did what he needed to do for the party and for bush, not his poeple. so all the months of his saying he would not do such a thing and he does it. so he lied to you he will do what ever it takes to be president , and if that means going against his own word, so john watch as one state after another drops from your sight, you are now seeing the real mc cain , doing what ever he has to do. ken

It's nitty-gritty time. Everyone has to put their resources where they will do the best. I am ecstatic that McCain has conceded Michigan. History Repeating itself? Sarah Palin AND George W. Bush are both “C” Students.

Palin did a good job "parroting" the phrases drummed into her head by her Republican strategists. However, her performance was at best mediocre. She did not appear to be "presidential". In my opinion, she would do well as a maybe a small town mayor or a talk show host, but NEVER a president or vice president might I add. The expectations for Palin going into this debate were so low that it is almost ridiculous. I would grade her "PERFORMANCE" as a C. As I can recall...........George W. Bush was also a C student; and we all know how that worked out!

McCain wants the sons and daughters of American families to continue to fight in Iraq, Victory is his call, yet when it comes to his personal campaign, when the outlook doesn't look good he wants to cut and run. I guess it depends who is in the line of fire as to how much courage you have to proceed forward towards a victory. McCain's true color has shown thru-Yellow.

Raymond Duke   October 3rd, 2008 12:55 pm ET

A lot of people in Michigan must really like a lot of common sense. They want to keep going democrat. Their Governors for a long period have been democrat most of their federal representatives and Senators or democrat and most of their state representatives. They are in these conditions because of these people and excessive union demands and they keep going down the same road with the same politicians and union demands. If you like were you are now than you need to keep following that path. Why do you think most foriegn car plants are building in the south. They offer close to the same pay and benefits and or making a profit. All of Michigan pretty soon will look like Detriot. Boardered up houses and Ghetto with all the welfare slugs the only thing left. As far as this bailout vote any person out who supports it. It is not going to work. All they are doing is bailing out foriegn banks, Wall street and New York city which is known as the greatest welfare society in the united states.

I wanted to be objective on my thoughts after the debate last night so I decided to be able to do that I didn’t need any visual obstructions. I wanted to base my opinion on the substance of what the V.P. candidates were saying, not on what they were wearing, if they looked at each other when speaking, etc., etc., etc.

I believe that Sarah Palin got her moxie back but, as far as substance I had to go with Joe Biden. Sarah came off as charming and cunning and I believe the Republican Party will be schooling her for the 2012 Presidential bid. She should be ready in four years but, not as V.P this year or not for President in case she has to step in now.

I personally have had enough of the six-pack Joe as President for a lifetime. We deserve better.

Hoosier Full of Hope   October 3rd, 2008 12:52 pm ET

Man, if only McCain's Michigan strategy was the same for Iraq....

Ken in Dallas   October 3rd, 2008 12:52 pm ET

Michigan was always a long shot for McCain. Now I want to see him fail in Florida and Ohio.

He doesn't have the capacity to lead, he's unwise, and he's no hero.

McCain doesn't have a clue about the economy. He's already been talking about the national financial crisis in the past tense, when we haven't even begun to deal with that issue.

He keeps talking about "victory" in Iraq, when no military strategist, including Petraeus, is willing to use the word "victory" to describe any possible outcome in Iraq.

He keeps trying to win votes with gimmicks and stunts ike parachuting into Washing last week to save the day. These tactics accomplish nothing except to make a splash in the media.

Now he revises his campaign tactics, waving the white flag of defeat in Michigan. The incumbent would, in an honest moment, describe this behavior with the words "cut and run."

Some hero.

A nightingale sang in the Hanoi Hilton. Nightingales are just poseur pigeons, anyway.

Barack Obama is the single biggets risk anyone in this country could take. We have no idea what his true views are, as he has pulled off one of the greatest magic acts in the history of politics. How do you Lefties feel knowing that the most left Senator in America today has intentionally pulled himself to the center to appeal to more Americans? The guy is a liar, a pure politician who has never stood for change in his entire political career. Suckers

Sure thing. Looks like we can start right now.

Might I suggest the effect of the current economic downturn on electricity usage and the adverse effects it has on keeping updated on current polling results in Florida?

Wise White Guy   October 3rd, 2008 12:51 pm ET

Noah...your logic is flawed and if you believe your precious leader they said they believed they could win in Michigan. Now is he lying now or was he lying then? My point is that if you want change in Washington it doesn't really matter which time he was lying to you. All that matters is he is willing to lie to you and that should make a whole bunch of bells go off in your head. He lied to your faces about the Obama/Biden tax plan and that is ok with you? He lied to you in virtually every ad they put out and that is ok with you? Here is a little info for you about why the Republicans are full of crap. 3 times in our history has a president seen the national debt grow compared to when they took office to when they left office. I will list them for you Reagan, Bush Sr., and lil Bush. Not once did this happen while a Democratic President was in office. The debt actually decreased slightly under Carter and dramatically under Clinton. So they can take their tag lines about the Democrats being the bane of our economy and the tax and spenders and shove it where the sun don't shine.

Re: Strong Hillary supporter

Sorry, but you are out of touch like McLame.

Republicans are using the old tactics like Bush, which won't work anymore.
They are slowly shifting day by day to Obamas line, but that is just a desperate attempt to get votes, nothing more.

Anybody in his right mind iwon't go for McLames flip / flops.

They are lieing and distorting the issues.

And still McLame is telling everyone that Obama is not qualified.

susie,
I'm from NC and we ALL have seen a BAD last eight years with this Republicans administration. I am tired of people who were not going to vote for Obama to keep using that he didn’t' want to allow your vote to count. If you would be honest with yourself and others, he wasn't the only one who AGREED to FL & MI not counting. It was ALL the democrats in the primary, INCLUDING Clinton. Obama isn't the reason for the stress that states are facing with high house foreclosures in ever town. Why is it that because Obama is biracial EDUCATED and SMART MAN, that the Republicans want voters to believe Obama is trying to BUY votes? NO candidates has been accused of this in the past and I think it's a shame to label ANYONE in such a negative and untrue way. I'm not sure if you are a paid blogger for or just a Republicans supporters, but if you look back at all the lies told by your candidate you would hope the American voters would reframe themselves from such trickery.

Thank YOU, Michigan for not being fooled by the Republican-propaganda machine!

Regardless, of what the pundits say, about the governor being "folksy, cute, smiley" .......she recited Republican-propaganda well, did anyone else notice? She repeated the same lines over and over.

PLEASE America, do not be fooled by CUTE, we do not need another Bush in the white house!

We have lost 159,000 jobs in September, things are going to get worse before they are better. WE need new ideas, we need change, another Republican, one that has been in Washington for over 25 years, and has supported Bush/Cheney is not the answer.

Rose   October 3rd, 2008 12:46 pm ET

This is so funny and terrible scary.

Did we just not go through eight years of a man 65% of Americans voted into office just because he was just like them? I say now Americans are now paying with the financial crisis I saw coming years okay with all of the outsourcing of our jobs and paying dearly with a war we should not have been in in the first place.

Now all we need is a cutesy almost pageant queen to go on stage with a well rehearsed set of words, a wink and a smile and people thought she did a wonderful job. Give me a break. I don’t even care that she does not have the experience; someone with a thoughtful mind who can think on their feet would do better then her. What we saw in her interviews was her, what we saw last night was an over rehearsed pageant queen. She even had the wave and the blowing of the kisses down pack.

Ms. Sarah is good maybe for Alaska, I hear Alaska now is saying that she better win VP because after seeing her with McCain they do not want her back. She may even be good for Mayberry. But not helping run this country.

Leaving Michigan, McCain's leaving here quicker than the jobs did!

I will now use my Sarah Palin switch to talk about last night:

Here’s my “straight talk” analysis, Sarah Palin ran away from questions on home foreclosures, the economy, job losses, bailouts, Pakistan, Iraq, and Afghanistan. She provided no details and when pressed on McCain’s plans, she went back to her talking points that were well rehearsed, fake folksy fluff, and gimmicks that won her second place Miss Alaska. You may not like Joe Biden, but he did answer questions and knew Senator McCain’s positions better than Governor Palin. Biden wins, but the Thrilla from Wasilla got a good day in the sun...which is better than a tanning bed.

Rena   October 3rd, 2008 12:38 pm ET

I'm sorry but we are having too many important issues at this point and I don't need a likeable person but a responsible and knowledgeable person to be making decisions over my life and my children life. After, the first two debates between the presidential nominees and VP's; I have to say that the Obama/Biden ticket is more advantaged at leading us right now. McCain should have put Obama away on foreign policies and he didn't and Sarah only reestablished her personality and character as a person; I'm looking for more and she just didn't have more. Overall Obama and Biden showed knowledge, skills, experience and the ability to handle crisis’s without being erratic and all over the place. They show true leadership and that's what I'm looking for in this election; it is too important to me and too vital for my children’s future. Please do not play around with this. This is not a race and gender competition people; though I'm sure at this point it is playing a big part in it. But at the end of the day people we must think about our finances and our soldiers after you have looked at skin color and a person of gender as to say which has the more important factor that determines our future; color/gender or knowledge/judgment along with some experience. I say some experience because that is not a factor as much as being able to make sound decisions and judgments, because if experience was a big factor than we would not be in this mess we are in, now would we? Experience has left me with a bad taste in my mouth because I voted for Bush believing that he had experience and ability to lead us and he failed us as so did his father.

mitch   October 3rd, 2008 12:37 pm ET

i never thought i'd see john mccain surrender? shakin the white flag in mich.? he NEEDS mich.! oh well, nevermind. i wonder if he would do the same in iraq?

Rena   October 3rd, 2008 12:37 pm ET

All I know is after watching that personality contest by Sarah; I am more convinced we better put Obama/Biden in that white house. I don't need a person who is being judged only by her foke language and smiles. I need a person who at any notice can handle the nation crisis and abroad; and she did not exemplify that last night. She didn't answer the questions last night that was based on every issue we as America and abroad are facing. Biden on the other hand showed experience, knowledge and personality.

So, after viewing and listening to this debated I will go with someone who is ready to take over the presidential slot at any notice. As McCain said so well, we don't need someone on job training we need someone who can do the job. If Obama was not able to perform Biden can; if McCain can't do the job Sarah can't; like he said we don't need on the job training. Executive experience or not Sarah just doesn't show that she can handle this job and it was in her own response last night. They said let Sarah be Sarah well that was no Sarah last night that was an act and I don't need someone pretending to be something or someone they are not when all my hard earnings are going down the tube and my son or husband life is on the line in a war she has no clue as to how to handle. I don't need a rehearsed line I need someone who has real knowledge and the ability to execute that knowledge in a responsible way. Neither McCain nor Sarah is producing these qualities.

HRC for Obama   October 3rd, 2008 12:37 pm ET

I cannot believe that there are still fellow HRC supporters out there that are willing to risk what's best for this nation because of the primaries. THINK. She's not, why should we? The McCain/Palin ticket is a dangerous bet, one that I'm not willing to take. And if you think that it won't come back to bite HRC in the future, you are sadly mistaken.
Vote for McCain- ruin our country for the next 4 years and Hillary's chances forever.

Wise White Guy   October 3rd, 2008 12:37 pm ET

Reminds me a little of the Democratic Primary campaign when it was pretty obvious for a very long time Hillary was not going to win it. Yet they kept saying, ignore the math and the experts and your own intelligence and believe us when we tell you we can still win this if you give up more of your own hard earned money. The Republicans are tanking and the Obama campaign is dropping the hammer and not letting up and yet the Republicans are responding by asking for more of the people's money. So what did we learn from "looking in the past" (FYI Six Pack Sarah it is also known as HISTORY)? History is something that we all should have learned in school and college so we do not repeat our mistakes. What should come to your mind Sarah is the failed policies of George Bush for 8 years and your sugar daddy voting with him over 90% of the time and mirroring his positions on the economy and foreign policy. Just give up more of your money to one of the richest Senators in the country because he sure needs it more than you need to pay your mortgage!

sue   October 3rd, 2008 12:37 pm ET

@ Noah

If it always a blue state, why then did Engler get voted in and revoted in as governor?

While Michigan does tend to go democratic in the presidential election, there is also a very large republican force in Michigan, particularly on the western side of the state. Michigan can be a win for republicans. It was very close for the last two presidential elections.

That McCain is pulling out of Michigan now is news. And it will affect the republicans running in the state elections.

I would hope Michigan and these other battleground states come to their senses and vote for McCain. If not, its their loss and America's loss if McCain does not win. You will all see that Obama is not even close to the person you envision him to be in your minds, and if he gets in it will be too late and we will all suffer.

I really feel that if he does get in America will be talking impeachment during the first year of his Presidency. He will not deliver his so-called change to Americans and therefor he will be considered a fraud and should be held liable.

Just like the Maverick... abandoned ship when the tide is too rough. Obama also pulled out of one state which was a state that didn't have a lot of electoral votes and most of the people had decided on a Republican as President. McCain is not a Maverick and the great Palin who read through a scripted speech did well with the winking but offered NOTHING on the issues. Give me a break people, let's Impeach President Bush for getting us in a war we shouldn't have been involved in and hold the elections today. I'm ready for Bush to get out of the office because HE and the Republican party has ran this country in the ground.

Let's not forget Joe Biden in the debate last night when he got choaked up about his son, do people realize that son survived the car crashed years ago which killed Biden's wife and daughter but NOW is being deployed today in this insane Iraq War? ... Gosh! Biden's son might not come back and that would choaked up anybody including myself. I'll be keeping Biden and Palin son in my prayers.

Obama/Biden

Hmmmm   October 3rd, 2008 12:34 pm ET

Sorta what the Republican Party in Michigan gets for causing all the problems by moving up the primary, huh?

Frank,MO   October 3rd, 2008 12:34 pm ET

Will McCain pull out of the USA ?

Dutch-VA   October 3rd, 2008 12:34 pm ET

You better sugar coat it and put an extra layer of frosting on top of it. McCain is going down. And he thinks he's gonna snatch Maine away from Sen. Obama? From what I've heard, Maine is Obama County.

OBAMA/BIDEN 08

Gregory in MN   October 3rd, 2008 12:34 pm ET

So McCain does something to help HIS campaign, but not others from his party.

Gee...gosh...golly...that sounds like someone who is in this only for himself and not putting "country first".

Is this what McCain and Palin mean by "shaking things up"? They cause panic and pandemonium among people when they make any decision?

Guess this is what happens when you've got a maverick at the top of your Presidential ticket. They look out for themselves...and no one else.

Matt   October 3rd, 2008 12:34 pm ET

Obama's got no Kahuna's to reform his own party. How's he going to reform the rest?
Snap the Cult of Personality and rid yourselves from this narcissistic unqualified socialist liberal.
Biden wants to retire. He could give a crap about Obama.
Pretty speeches don't mean diddly, unless you can bring both sides to the table.

McCain/Palin "Real reform, not partisan positioning."

Who are the gays going to vote for now?

Look at California now. The bastion of liberalism !! Their liberal policies have put them 7 billion down, now they want a bailout !!

See what's coming now under Obama?

DGee   October 3rd, 2008 12:33 pm ET

So, am i getting this right..............is McCain saying when the going gets tough he just gives up and moves on?

Hmmm......doesn't seem very 'presidential' does it? Couldn't this be construed as the White Flag of Defeat?

CM   October 3rd, 2008 12:33 pm ET

I guess the GOP isn't looking at the mathematical predictions that have Obama with 269 evs outisde the battleground states.

buck   October 3rd, 2008 12:32 pm ET

CUT AND RUN JOHN. WAY TO GO!

Sam   October 3rd, 2008 12:32 pm ET

From Now On Mcccain's campaign stratgey should be:

Pull out from Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio and Florida...

And in last week of October, Pull out from All 50 States and Vote for Obama-Biden....

Greg, NY   October 3rd, 2008 12:32 pm ET

Noah October 3rd, 2008 12:25 pm ET

Wow, alot of you Liberals are pretty uninformed voters (no surprise there). Michigan is always a blue state. That is due in large part to the urban Detroit and the Auto unions. This is no big news that obama is going to win there. Talk to me when Obama gets a lead in an important state like Florida

Noah,

I'm talking to you.

Obama has a pretty good lead in Florida now.

Edain   October 3rd, 2008 12:31 pm ET

That's harsh. Poor Michigan! It seems like they always get the short end of the stick. Why not pull out of states worth fewer electoral votes, or out of states with larger leads for Obama? Once again the McCain campaign has baffled me.

Truth Be told   October 3rd, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Strong Hillary Supporter above is a troll.

I have a nice piece of rag you can wipe your tears with the night of november 4th.

President Obama and Vice President Biden will be giving their speeches that night after palin and mccain concede. From then on, the hard work in getting America back on track starts.

irony   October 3rd, 2008 12:31 pm ET

do corporate tax cuts create jobs? Look at the facts. Eight years of Bush tax cuts and unemployment rates sky-rocketing. Look at Alaska. Two years of tax cuts and unemployment rates have gone up every single month since palin was elected. We cannot afford four more years.

Please   October 3rd, 2008 12:30 pm ET

America has not even voted as yet. As far as failue goes, even if McCain loses he is not a "failure". He has accomplished much in life and is a person of good character.

He will not deliver his so-called change to Americans and therefor he will be considered a fraud and should be held liable.

jm for sc   October 3rd, 2008 12:29 pm ET

McCain should pack his bags and go home. As I watched the debate last night, I found it amazing how Sarah only knew a few talking points and anything she didn't know, which is a lot, she went back to talking on what she had practiced. The hear republicans pretend they saw a "knock out of the ball park," is just down right deception.

The real Sarah Palin was brought up in the interviews last week before rehearsal.

Obama/Biden 08

mitch   October 3rd, 2008 12:29 pm ET

hey noah! obama's leading 51% to 47% in florida, according to cnn 's latest poll! keep up!

Cathy   October 3rd, 2008 12:29 pm ET

No state is won or lose until November 4th. I will continue to go to Michigan and campaign for Obama.

GUESS MICHIGAN WAS NOT IMPRESSED WITH LAST WEEK MCCRYPT'S SUPERMAN SUIT SHOWED HIS MANBREASTS, HIS DEPENDS PANTYLINE AND A LIMP CAPE!   October 3rd, 2008 12:28 pm ET

YEEOOWWW!

Thankfully you saved us the drama antics this week!

YIKES, now I have that visual seared into my retina!!!

Jean   October 3rd, 2008 12:28 pm ET

Is something else going on with John McCain? First he brings in someone he rarely knows (would you leave an unknown to watch your children) Now he has left Michigan...does anyone think maybe he thinks the country owes "him," for what he went through? I admire and thank him, but.....walking the talk....he does not. Is he re-thinking what he has gotten into? Is he giving it away....lettting a stronger woman do the work for him...knowing something we may not yet know?

Baze   October 3rd, 2008 12:28 pm ET

The McCain tailspin is tearing the G.O.P. party down further and further. We will look upon this year as the end of our 2nd party

ONE NATION

Rena   October 3rd, 2008 12:27 pm ET

Well, Noah

Guess what? Obama has a 10 point lead in FL. What now?

Annie   October 3rd, 2008 12:26 pm ET

I'm wondering if John McCain pulled out of Michigan to redirect funds to Alaska where his operatives are attempting to cover up news from and shut down the "troopergate" investigation into Palin. It would be interesting to know how much that's costing him, and if he's using public financing (taxpayer money) to do it.

MLG   October 3rd, 2008 12:26 pm ET

The republicans are a divided and failed party this election year. They don't know where they stand and they don't know what direction to go because the public is no longer falling for their dirty tricks.

They are suffering the consequences for years of snotty arrogance and disregard for others. Hopefully, it will make them a more humble party.

GS   October 3rd, 2008 12:25 pm ET

If that's how he treats his friends... I wonder how he'll treat everyone else?

Noah   October 3rd, 2008 12:25 pm ET

Kiah G.   October 3rd, 2008 12:25 pm ET

Well what do expect from the candidate who is so caught up in creating distractions then running a successful campaign focused on changing the direction of this country and helping the American people.

I think this is the slide McCain couldn't afford to take and I believe Obama will win this election overwhelmingly.

victor,nj   October 3rd, 2008 12:25 pm ET

mccain withdraws from michigan, but will not withdraw from Iraq

Brandon for Obama   October 3rd, 2008 12:24 pm ET

I just moved to Michigan and reregistered here (had to get a new license and all) just so I could participate and have Michigan go for Obama.

paul in FL   October 3rd, 2008 12:23 pm ET

It is encouraging to see that, finally, the American voter is beginning to see that McCain is an imperfect clone of Bush.
Too many Republicans vote Republican as a purely reflective action. They automatically spring to the defense of their candidate's and try to justify the most ridiculous position. For example, I am amazed that a large number will continue to try to justify the invasion of Iraq.

mitch   October 3rd, 2008 12:23 pm ET

obama in a landslide, with a congressional mandate, to enact his policies, will get us out of these messes, the republicans have left for us. palin/mccain will be more of the same failed policies of the last 8 years. more war. more economic hardship. then, more war and on and on and on......,

Strong Hillary supporter   October 3rd, 2008 12:23 pm ET

And OBAMA must accept that he is going to lose big time on 11/4.

CM   October 3rd, 2008 12:22 pm ET

McCain will have to pull resources from other states soon if his downward slide continues. I predict that it will as he is offering no answers for the current financial crisis but is trying to be the one seen the most in the media.

Not a good idea to waste people's time there Johnny.

McCain Invented the BlackBerry, Palin Invented the Manure Spreader   October 3rd, 2008 12:20 pm ET

CUT AND RUN!

Just another one of McCain's gambling losses:

He gambled on Michigan and lost,

He gambled on suspending his campaign and lost,

He gambled on Palin and lost.

Do we need such a reckless risk-taker leading our country in these trying times?

Bob Indianapolis IN   October 3rd, 2008 12:20 pm ET

The tide is turning. This is the beginning of the death of fascism in America.

Bruce   October 3rd, 2008 12:19 pm ET

McCain must accept FAILURE
