McCain-Palin campaign released Sarah and Todd Palin's tax returns.

(CNN) - The McCain-Palin campaign released Sarah and Todd Palin's 2006 and 2007 tax returns Friday afternoon. The campaign says the Palins paid $36,682 in federal taxes for those years, and contributed $8,205 to charity. The campaign also released a financial disclosure report for Todd Palin.

I have been working with my local Democratic Headquarters making phone calls for the Obama Campaign. I sincerely would like to know why, when I nicely introduce myself over the phone, are Mccain supporters so obnoxious, angry and secretive? They can't even seem to utter the words, "I'm voting for Mccain." Nine out of ten of them are such a rude bunch of characters!
I'm voting for BARACK OBAMA!
I say it loud. I say it proud.

Pat, Pa.   October 3rd, 2008 9:25 pm ET

Did you notice Psych 101 in action last night. " May I call you Joe " ??
She tried to be so cutesy with all of the winking, etc. Make no mistakes ladies, she wasn't doing that for your benefit. She was trying to get the attention of the men because she figures she has a lot of women in her corner ( Hillary supporters ) and now needs more men. By the way, some of these men lean on their women about who they should vote for. BELIEVE IT.
People, do your homework. This is too important an election to just elect someone because they look good, or act cute, or TRY to make you believe she is one of just the average Americans. She is not. For you people who identify with her because she is a mother. Big deal ! It doesn't take much to conceive a child. It takes a hell of a lot to be a mother though, and that means being there for your children and not using them to further your ambitions.
If you have questions about a lot of this crap that is being e-mailed around about Obama, go to sites like TruthorFiction.com or Snopes.com. Put his name in and read about them on there. You may be surprised about how much of it is just crap. These people who send this around are bigots. Plain and simple.

Robert Barnett   October 3rd, 2008 9:18 pm ET

How the hell do you score a federal task rate or 9.3% and 14.9%. All I hear is Republicans complain about high taxes – hardly call these high. These are way lower than I have ever seen. If this is the average tax rate for Governors then that's the job I want!

EW   October 3rd, 2008 9:15 pm ET

It's interesting that the Palin's don't actually tithe on their income. As someone whose faith is said to be important to her, and given their income, I would have expected Sarah Palin's charitable contributions to be five-figures.

Meri from Virginia   October 3rd, 2008 9:14 pm ET

Obama/Biden 08!   October 3rd, 2008 9:13 pm ET

Cheryl: I hear there's voter fraud going on buts its the repugs that are doing it. They just got thrown out of court trying to shut down early voting in areas that Mccain is apparently not doing well in....hmmmm
Now why would they try something so dirty and underhanded????

Better to be thought a fool than open your mouth and prove you are a fool. Check your facts!

bryon   October 3rd, 2008 9:13 pm ET

She lacks knowledge, experience and the ability to make the right decisions for this country, plain and simple.

Lynda Ridgefield, CT.   October 3rd, 2008 9:11 pm ET

Watch McPain the next time, very carefully. He appears to get all jiggy when he's in her presence.
She's very ambitous, and that wink, wink, may very well work in Wasillia, but down here on the mainland, you need brains, and a desire to work accros the isle...doubt she's able to do that. From her debates in AK, she sounds like a shrill.
What bothers me about her, is this, who, in their right mind, knowing they are carrying a baby who is facing challenges, goes into labor, and waits for hours to travel back to Alaska, from a gov meeting, so she can deliever on her homeland? Maybe she is pro-life, but what was she thinking, putting that child at risk?
There's just not enough info on her, and I don't want a VP, thinking I'm a JOE SIX-PACK?
Who talks like that at a VP debate?
She's a sorry excuse for both a mom and mother!!!

thomas harding   October 3rd, 2008 9:10 pm ET

nikki   October 3rd, 2008 9:09 pm ET

to john who posted around 4 or 4:30 regarding biden's net worth. you could easily research it before spouting off:

With a net worth between $59,000 and $366,000, and almost no outside income or investment income, he is consistently ranked as one of the least wealthy members of the Senate. Biden states that he has been listed as the second poorest member in Congress, a distinction that he is not proud of, but attributes it to being elected early in his career.

Fred from San Jose   October 3rd, 2008 9:09 pm ET

My daughter, who is 6, was asking me why Palin was winking at the camera. I said to her that Palin is trying to be appear friendly. My daughter then commented: If she wants to be friendly, she needs to talk better. Mrs. Alexander (her teacher) said that when talking to people, I need to answer the question quickly and not make up words. That way people will like me.

I guess Palin never had Mrs Alexander for teacher.

M Evans   October 3rd, 2008 9:07 pm ET

Those who are saying they contributed more to charity than Obama – clearly that is not the case. The $8k they gave was over two years – year one they gave 1.5% of their income, year 2 was 3%. Obama gave 4.7% in 05 and 6% in 07. (Both fall short of the 10% tithe that is expected, which is especially surprising for Palin considering how she exploits her faith for political purposes)

Lumping the $8k together misleads folks into thinking it was a one year total for the quick reader. I'd bet that prior years were even lower percentages. Also, they apparently took a loss in one of Todd's businesses – either they're fudging his self-employment figures or they really can't manage their endeavors. Either would be concerning.

aware   October 3rd, 2008 9:06 pm ET

Palin is the new Reagan. She is an authentic breath of fresh air with an outside of Washington credibility! She represents the real change mainstream Americans can believe in! :)

Obama does not have American values or a moral center. He is a far-left liberal with a socialist/fascist ideology and a tax and spend economic plan and a tunnel vision energy plan that will destroy America! :(

Vote McCain/Palin 08! They will deliver the real reform that will make a great America even better! :)

Sarah Palin made a complete fool of herself during the debate. She failed to answer any of the questions. It appears that all she knows is how to criticize her opponents. I would like very much to see her transcripts from the five colleges she attended. Nonetheless, anyone who does not see through this lady is just as evil as she is. The evidence is very clear to the naked eye and ear. Just her dialogue alone diminishes the idea of education and the purpose it serves. That said, I’m so thankful that McSame choose Mrs. Pain. They are prime examples of why this country is in financial ruins.

if there was nothing to hide, why did the mcsame campaign decide to wait so long? what fools. gov. palin's tax returns (the 2 years released) are very unremarkable and the fact that she contributed a large source of her income to charity would have played well with many.
his campaign managers should quit for making what could have been a positive a big negative.

OBAMA/BIDEN 08'

Livin' in the Desert   October 3rd, 2008 8:49 pm ET

This is so typical of the liberal establishment. Over the years, they have lamented that not enough women, minorities, etc., were in positions of power. Yet, when that happens (i.e. Condoleeza Rice, Sarah Palin, Clarence Thomas), they still complain. Evidentally, not only do you have to be a minority or woman, but you have to be the "right type" of minority or woman. Obama is a savior; Thomas and Rice are "Uncle Toms." Madeline Albright was a wonderful Secretary of State, Sarah Palin is the Devil. You are all a bunch of hypocrites.

45 year old white lady for Obama   October 3rd, 2008 8:48 pm ET

what exactly does Todd palin do? he seems to have had alot of jobs. Why can't he keep one??

Akira   October 3rd, 2008 8:48 pm ET

Unlike most liberals I decided to look up Obama's tax return.
In 2006 he paid around $ 300,000.
That is more than Palin's family makes in a year.
I still can stand it when politicians claim to be "ordinary" though.

gorgoglione   October 3rd, 2008 8:48 pm ET

Todd Palin could easily loose 20K in his 401k. I am active duty army and have/had over 100k in mine. In the last 6 months I have lost over 20k as the market has crashed

Former Republican in Texas   October 3rd, 2008 8:47 pm ET

Ladies of the land– you women who can vote-
Please use your brains & some common sense here!! This "woman", Sarah Palin, will set womanhood back 100 years if elected. If you want to be the little dutiful wife & jump every time your "man" hollers frog, if you want to stay "barefoot & pregnant", if you want to give up your right to think on your own, if you want the man valling all the shots & telling you what you can & can't do - then this gal will help make it possible for you. The ironic thing is I don't think she's the "power" in the Palin household– I think old Todd tells her everything she's allowed to do & say. She doesn't strike me as terribly bright, but she is probably pretty obedient when he gives her her marching orders.

Elizabeth - Wise County - TEXAS   October 3rd, 2008 8:47 pm ET

American's needs to send Palin packing back to Alaska. She is not to be trusted nor her husband.

Karen Saucedo   October 3rd, 2008 8:45 pm ET

Q: Why, when Sarah speaks of doing things as VP, does she keep saying "Todd and I"? Todd is not a candidate for any office. Does she plan to hire her husband, as she did her many friends?
Q: Why has the bar been put so low for this woman that all she felt ok with saying "I'll answer the questions in the way I want to...not in the way you ask them." Why is it all she had to do was show up and not look like an idiot (AFTER hiding out for two weeks from the media and being crammed full of info from index cards by her keepers? She avoided question after question because she could only comment on what she'd had crammed into her. She had no base of knowledge of her own, at all.
Q: Why have we suddenly forgotten that she is under investigation for abuse of power? The republican party asked for a restraining order on the investigation till after the campaign because public opininion may sway the investigation. Well, we didn't tell her to run for VP. And, she was being investigated BEFORE she was a candidate. I say, conduct the investigation. Shouldn't we KNOW what she's about?
Q: Why would a self-professed "soccer mom" feel that her folksy way of talking to Joe SixPack and SallySitcom can play at the national political level where it is not fun and games but REAL politics, real concerns, real issues.
Q: Why dont people realize that this woman is NOT an energy expert.
She is knowledgable from necessity about the energy that Alaska supplies. And, WHO ELSE could work a deal with an oil or gas company other than the governor of the state? SHE is not the reason those contracts were signed. They were signed simply because ALASKA has the oil and gas reserves. If Mickey Mouse were the governor, THAT is who the energy execs would have met to make the deals. HELLO!!!!!
Q: Why are people SO stupid that they look at her brown eyes, her brown hair bun, her kids, and think...Ohhhh, she'll make us all OK. The woman can't name a supreme court decision other than Roe v Wade. Could not name ONE newspaper or Magazine she enjoys reading. (Or, a single book for that matter). She is a creationist, thought dinosaurs existed 6,000 years ago, was for the secession of Alaska from the union, plans to fix the problem with global warming but doesn't agree with any of the huge body of scientific evidence showing human beings are the cause. If I don't know why I got fat, how do I know how to not get fat? Huh?????? If/When Palin doesn't get elected, will Bristol's engagement suddenly "go away"? Children need a mother, a soccer mom, a folksy person. WE THE PEOPLE need an intelligent individual with experience who doesn't lie, evade, misuse power, and exaggerate her accomplishments.

Canadian onlooker   October 3rd, 2008 8:44 pm ET

I've been quite shocked to watch the comments about Palin being "one heartbeat away from the presidency" being thrown about. It's sad that such an ageist comment can be made without condemnation. Try this on for size: Biden is one lynching away from being the president. Let's keep it on the high road folks. Most of the world thinks that most americans function with a below-average IQ as it stands, and lack general social skills to boot. You needn't support this belief by posting such rubbish.

TexicoFrom Mexico   October 3rd, 2008 8:43 pm ET

300k income and only 8k in total giving to all charities? If they were true tithers, that would be 30k in giving as a minimum. The word "tithe" comes from the word that means roughly 1/10th.

To: Wise white guy.
Maybe I'm mistaken but I've never seen Palin pastor remove evil from anyone. I have yet to see this big problem with her religion in her politics. It's those ideas that you can put everyone of faith in to the "crazy nut case" that cause concern for me. For all the finger pointing about the lack of tolerance in Christianity, it seems most of the intolerance comes from others. So give me a break and talk about something of fact or actual substance. BTW I thought fear mongering was for the GOP.

jackRighty   October 3rd, 2008 8:32 pm ET

Zana   October 3rd, 2008 8:30 pm ET

The comment she made about adding more power to the VP position was just plain SCARY. The checks and balances in our government are there for a very good reason. Before the debate I was one of those undecided voters, now I am definitely voting for Obama.

Ellie in Aurora, CO   October 3rd, 2008 8:27 pm ET

Oh, my, Scott. Perhaps when Obama's elected, and he fixes the education system where you live, at least your children might be able to put complete sentences together! They could also probably do some research on a computer to find out the truth about presidential candidates. Clearly, you don't have a clue... but maybe your children will under Obama's education plan.

It's disturbing to read most of these comments. She and her husband earned this money, paid their fare share of taxes and even donated a large percentage to charities. If you want a better life, work hard, educate yourself and don't expect a free ride. That is why our country is in trouble. Pay for your own education, health insurance and retirement. Don't sit around drinking beer, watching tv and being bitter that you don't feel you got a fair shake in life. Make your own way!

SAINT SARAH PRAY FOR THIS SINNER NOW AND IN THE HOUR OF MY NEED!   October 3rd, 2008 8:25 pm ET

Failin' Palin states that homosexuality can be "cured" by praying?

Homosexuality is a "choice"?

Ok, Saint Sarah, just tell all of us gay folks how/when you decide to be a heterosexual? Is that a daily choice? How about a monthly reminder that you should be straight? Maybe when puberty hit, you decided you liked weenies over tacos? You hold the answere to all the ills of modern society, if only you could share them by composing a coherent sentence!.

As for praying, I am praying you never see the inside of the Oval Office even as a visitor!

KENNY   October 3rd, 2008 8:24 pm ET

Palin is an idiot! This lady cannot even name a single supreme court decision that she agrees with, also she cannot name any magazines or newspapers she reads.
I dont doubt that Sarah and Todd have money hidden, if you are taking money under the table it wont be on your tax reports. Todd works for BP oil and Sarah the governor of an energy producing state, there is money hidden. This lady is incompetent!

Dave Richards   October 3rd, 2008 8:22 pm ET

Liberals can't handle the truth. They're terrified that the curtain is being pulled back on the Great and Powerful OZ! Obama is a pied piper, it's over for him if the American people ever pull the curtain back.

A Plea to the GOP   October 3rd, 2008 8:22 pm ET

I'd like to appeal to those Republicans who might be drawn to Governor Palin for all her folksiness and "Joe six pack "qualities. If you truly put "country first" you have no option but to run from John McCain like the plague. Gov. Palin is not fit to be anywhere near the Presidency and the fact that John McCain chose HER when there were many imminentely more qualified candidates available, suggest she is not fit to be President either.

Please view the debate again, it is obvious she was furiously darting her eyes down to her "notes" on almost every question. This is why we got those puzzling "non-answer" answers. This means SOMEONE else wrote those answers for her and gave her instructions to use them when she could not answer a question herself. She did that when she was asked about her 'Archilles heal' and about the 'VP's powers.' Both of those questions were not answered.

Can you imagine her in the Oval office? Who will be writing her "notes' then? haven't we had enough of a President who is "Like Us" but has an aversion to intellectual curiousity? Do we want Palin to follow Bush?

Do the right thing GOPand TRULYput your COUNTRY FIRST!! before your party interests and personal feelings.

Patric, PHX,AZ   October 3rd, 2008 8:21 pm ET

What trips me out most is that 85% of peoples' comments here and on ABC, MSNBC, WASHINGTON POST, NY TIMES, and TIME MAG ONLINE, favor Obama/Biden 08, including mine...lol....So why is it hard for the remaining 15% to just stop crying and join the winning team? They said, "If you cn't beat them, Join them" right?

dave from Dayton, OH   October 3rd, 2008 8:21 pm ET

Hmmm...according to the news tonight, her household income for 2006 and 2007 was somewhere in the vicinity of about $160,000 or so. According to her tax returns, they gave $8,000 to charity...which I would conclude would include church.

The Palin's tend to paint themselves as very convicted Christians...yet they only gave 5% of their income to charity (or the church). If they were being good Christians, they would have reported at least $16,000 a year (the Biblical tithe or 10%...old testament and new testament).

Maybe all the far right Evangelicals will forgive that small gaffe in their willingness to give to the church.

tod palin   October 3rd, 2008 8:20 pm ET

SEXISM DEFINED: HILLARY CLINTON BLINKS WHILE SARAH SIMPLETON WINKS!   October 3rd, 2008 8:19 pm ET

Well, well well. The Republican version of sexism appears to be when a male ask a question of Sarah Palin about her qualifications, and that is a sexist statement.

So, how do Republicans define those flirty little winks and smiles Sarah was dishing out during the debate? Dick Cheney did not wink at me. I KNOW Ferraro did not wink at me. I have not seen all of Hillary’s debates, but the ones I have seen, she has not winked at me.

So, I am only left to surmise that Sarah was using this “qualification” to encourage men to “rise to the occasion” so to speak, and vote for her!

I BETTER NEVER HEAR THE WORD ‘SEXISM” UTTERED BY A REPUBLICAN AGAIN IN REFERENCE TO SARHAH PALIN!

Michael O'Brien   October 3rd, 2008 8:19 pm ET

Sometimes I think that Sarah Palin lives in a 'fastasy world'. When 'reality' sets in, today, tomorrow or a week from now.., with Thursday nights 'debate' and previous 'interviews'.., Sarah Palin is "not" ready to be Vice-President or President. Sarah Palin is way over her head and 'out of her league'. Senator Joe Biden, Charles Gibson and Katie Couric proved that. The best thing for the Democratic Party is Sarah Palin.

Guess it's kinda hard to tell exactly what the Palins did or didn't do, since there was no totals for each of the years, let alone an note saying who made what & where. Kinda like Troopergate... If she has nothing to hide, why try to get high power Republicans to get the Alaska Government to back off of the investigation? The judge ruled that things were done by the book by the investigators, so she needs to show that she's go back to Alaska & address this BEFORE the election. I wouldn't vote for her with this hanging over her like an albatros. Take responsiblity for your actions Sarah Palin.

How come no one is talking about these 2 liberals who preach change? What change? Not voting on much or introducing much. Obama talks eliquently, but how in 18 months in government is he qualified? And why does he still go to Rev. Wrights anti-ameriican, anti-white caucasion sermon? Even Opra's stayed away. And how much has Mr Ayers given the Obama campaign?

WIth Obama who knows what's behind that sales pitch of change.

they gave $8000 to their favorite group. The ones fighting for Alaska to secede from the U.S., you know the one they were members of. yes thats what we need a VP who doesn't want her state to be part of the U.S. the scariest thing about it is the McCain/Palin supporters would completely dismiss that fact because, she's so darned nice and honest. Get real she lied cheated and stole her way to becoming AK gov. Now she's trying to do the same for VP.

Cheryl- It impossible to make a valid point around here. Apparently these people spewing nasty comments think everyone else should pay for everything for them. It's too bad they let anyone cast a vote. I don't think people who pay little or no income tax should be able to spend other peoples money. America is the land of opportunity....you can make something of your life if you choose to. It seems the majority around here don't want to work for it, they would rather take it from those who do. Ignoring facts is a big thing around here.

Glen for “poor judgment”. That was also a crisis that introduced us to the current generation of Bush boys. Didn't Neil, the President's brother, play a large part in turning out the lights at a Colorado savings and loan? So while Obama's ethics may be questioned by some people, they are not questioned by the committee that has the final say, the committee that has already taken McCain to task.

Now for Gov. Palin. She is dodging the questions that anyone with half a brain wants to hear the answers to. Her "aw shucks" routine and her "straight talk to the American people" are a farce. She keeps repeating talking points and never provides any information. When she talks it makes me feel like a parent who has to cross examine a child to get answers to the questions I am asking, not answers they want to provide to questions I didn't ask. It’s simple. Because of her obvious lack of knowledge and understanding of the issues before the debate, her lack of answers during and after the debate is because of the same reason. I don’t care about their tax returns, any of them. All the candidates live in America and can use the tax laws, as written, to their best advantage, just like anybody else. If they are breaking the law, it is up to the IRS to go after them. It is one of the least of my concerns at this point.

CNN how about a factcheck, huh?

Anna   October 3rd, 2008 8:03 pm ET

For a woman to have put up with such abuse from right and left all week and come out and still be able to stand and look straight ahead not alone answer questions, it takes guts. All you Palin haters, you know that she has guts and that's why you complain about everything. You are afraid of her. Whether McCain wins or not this November, in four years she is going to be the next President of the United States and you cannot take this. Which one of you knows what it takes to take on the big oil companies and win? Which one of you knows what it takes to put together a multi billion dollar budget and win? Yes, you are scared and we can see through your smear tactics.

Close-minded liberal poster here.

I'm so closed-minded, I dont trust anyone who tells bald-faced lies to crowds of people.

I'm so closed minded, I think anyone who thinks that humans put saddles on dinosaurs and rode them around is an absolute idiot.

I'm so closed-minded that I think anyone who stone-walls and refuses to testify when subpoened in an investigation into charges of abuse-of-power being conducted by a bipartisan committee is guilty of obstruction of justice and should be charged in a court of law.

Palins debate last night reminded me of that cheesy waitress you find at international house of pancakes serving the coffee and we all know that doesnt cut the mustard for being 2nd in command

CA Senior, San Jose   October 3rd, 2008 8:02 pm ET

The IRS should audit her and check out her receipts for charitable contributions. Why should we trust this woman who lies about her qualifications and also has learned to spout McCain's lies. There is no rule, by the way, that says a generous contributor would be able to lead America and represent us to other countries. Sarah, you are still a puppet and a pawn of John McCain and nothing you said in the debate told us what you think (without memorizing your speeches and reading your flash cards. Also, she kept saying she is a reformer, but neither McCain or her has clued us in about how they will go about it with a Congress that doesn't agree with his policies.

apostlek   October 3rd, 2008 8:02 pm ET

Angry angry people, you keep venting while both presidential candidates are sleeping in peace. Of course, having Secret service protection does not hurt.
Anyhow, enjoy your freedom of speech but thanks to the military men and women that protect our freedom.

She did not look presidential during the debate. I hated all that winking and folkey talks. Sorry guys, but I don't want to vote for a Joe six packs or a hockey mom type of candidate. I'm voting for the smart guys!

ct hockey mom   October 3rd, 2008 7:51 pm ET

why is there so much hostility when we should be discussing real issues about the future of our country. the question is do you want to see this country move towards socialism or towards liberty? and do you trust your government? when you're through slinging childish digs than maybe we can talk. by the way, palin's charity is the way we americans distinguish our citizenship from other governments....

THE MOST SHOCKING THING IS THAT IN THE DEBATE

"THIS WAS THE REAL PALIN"

ALL I ASK OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE IS TO "WINK" BACK CLINTON

ASK YOURSELVES IF THIS IS HOW CLINTON BEHAVES?

ASK YOURSELVES IF CLINTON WAS ABLE TO DODGE A

QUESTIONS LIKE THIS IN THOSE MILLION DEBATES?

Lifelong Republican for Obama, Columbia, TN   October 3rd, 2008 7:50 pm ET

I'm completely uninterested in Palin. She is without substance or thoughtfulness. I am in a daze that she is still being talked about like she matters to the practical and real problems at hand.

TaxCheck   October 3rd, 2008 7:48 pm ET

It appears that Todd and Sarah Palin filed an incorrect tax return for 2007. Todd is showing a loss on his Sch C for racing of $9k plus. However he also took a deduction for section 179. Section 179 expesning is not allowed if you are going to show a loss.

Let's see if anyone else notices OR if they accept responsibility for it or blame the tax preparer. My bet is that they will blame the tax preparer.

Julie   October 3rd, 2008 7:36 pm ET

Matt, is it possible that you misread that amount of taxes she paid as the amount of income she made? I can only IMAGINE how much she must make in order to have that big of an income tax debt. I have a decent job at the US Post Office, and her taxers are about 2/3 of my annual salary. That means that she does NOT qualify as a Joe Sixpacker, no matter how colloquial she wants to speak.

By the way, tax payers with huge incomes such as hers generally give large amounts to charity in order to get their net income down to a local tax bracket.

Seems to me that people need to look at the character and integrity of who they want to vote for as the foundations for the candidates. It is from there that they will make their decisions and represent the US to the world. I have to say that I have trouble with Obama's financial connections (house, political supporter convictied of fraud, funds received from Fannie / Freddie). No one is "clean", seems some people seem to carry more baggage. No matter what, America has come a long way. Maybe not financially, but....

Pailin provided tax returns for the years in State / Fed politics. The local politics aren't required to provide and you know the numbers would be less. Why are people complaining about her numbers when Obama / Biden earned multiples more and gave fractions lesss??!! No one in politics will be closer financially to the average person then she appears – just put things in perspective.

I cannot believe that anyone in their right mind would even consider voting for Sarah Palin. She is totally ridiculous ! President of the PTA – maybe. Her debating skills are obviously scripted and rehearsed. Her folksy manner is repugnant and obnoxious. Give us all a break !!!!!

Tim   October 3rd, 2008 7:23 pm ET

Why isn't the families income included in this news post. That would be the point of creating an entry about her tax forms being released. I know you can click through to see the income, but I feel this entry has been softballed for Palin.

Palin's town of Wasilla is broke. Sarah decided to build a sports complex at the tune of 2.1 million or so and then after they built the sports complex they found out that the town didn't even own the land. But then she became Governor and left Wasilla broke and they can't sell the sports complex to recover.......

Several people commented that Sarah Palin gave more than Obama - check your facts. According to independent sources, In 2006 the Obamas gave over 6% of their income to charity - a huge percent more than the Palins' 1.5%. The average American gives 3.1%.

KS Gal   October 3rd, 2008 7:15 pm ET

Sarah Palin will never make it as a VP. The Whitehouse doesn't need a flirty woman around all thoes men.She needs to go back to Alaska and try and help thoes people that need food and running water. They have no tvs so some dont even know who she is. She can't or won't help the poorest of her own people yet she gave 8,205 to charity? Obama and Biden you have my vote.

Stephanie from Troy, MO   October 3rd, 2008 7:01 pm ET

I just wonder if the amount shown is their taxable income or their income before any deductions. If it is their taxable income, then they probably made quite a bit more, and if so then how much were they able to write off? It just seems like a pretty low income for a governor, oil worker, laborer, and fisherman, not to mention the prize money for those snow machine races that he won. Just a thought. Loopholes you know.

Patricia from Las Vegas   October 3rd, 2008 7:01 pm ET

Biden was clearly the winner in every area.

Interesting that Palin gave more in charitable deductions in one year than Biden gave in 10 years total.
Biden only gave $3690 claimed charity deduction for 10 YEARS
The Palins gave over $8000 in two years.
Who cares about helping the poor?

I don't know about you, but she's not like the rest of us! She paid more in taxes than most of the "Average Joes" earn in a year.

Even Steven   October 3rd, 2008 6:48 pm ET

There are already knowledgeable people questioning why the travel expenses incurred by her husband and family were not included in the filings. These should be considered taxable income because they are not considered state employees. Additionally, in 2007 Sarah made almost $197k as governor, yet she filed on $107k. Where did the other $90k go????? I love the smell of tax fraud in the morning.

Chanda-Cincinnati   October 3rd, 2008 6:48 pm ET

Cheryl

ACORN is a group whose sole purpose is to register voters. They are in battle gorund states right now trying to make sure as many people get registered as possible. Now I live in Ohio, and I do not work for ACORN, but I have personaly registered hundreds of people over the past year. The GOPs claim is that some of the registrations are false, and in my expereince, that can be true. I can get done at the end of a drive and see people registered as Mickey Mouse, or I had a guy put his b-day as 6/6/6666 ( he was scary), but never anything done intentionally by me to fraud the electors. The GOPs problem is that this group is now working in predominantly black neighborhoods, and that usually means predominantly democratic votes. The GOP does not like that, especially not in a state as close as Ohio. No story there sweetie...just propaganda.

Donna   October 3rd, 2008 6:47 pm ET

Minimal information at best.

What I want to see is McCain's medical records. A man who has had five bouts of cancer so far, is this the man we want heading the country? If he's going to have such a running mate, the American people need to know if he's physically sound.

Palin is Incompetent and Unfit   October 3rd, 2008 6:45 pm ET

Her tax returns should be audited. She lies so much, why should we believe her tax returns are even true? She charged the state of Alaska for nights she spent in her own home....she is corrupt and wil lie about anything.

She made a fool of herself again at the debate with Biden. She did not answer a single question asked her. I also found it ridiculous and unprofessional for her to wink at the camera and use bad grammar to try to be cute. I doubt a foreign leader would find winking and poor use of the English language an endearing quallity in a national leader. I doubt they would take her seriously and think, like the rest of us, that is an incompetent and unfit idiot.

Palin is way over her head and she proved it again in the debate. I will be so glad when I never have to hear her annoying voice again!

Kim J   October 3rd, 2008 6:45 pm ET

The reason their income went up between the two years was that Todd quit working when she was elected governor and then went back to work last year. This guy doesn't have some cushy desk job – he works in -40 degree weather on the slope. You all should buy the book "America's Cheapest Family" and learn how to save your money. You don't have to make a lot to save. Cancel your cable or dish and you can save $1000 a year. Just quit whining because someone makes more than you. Funny, you complain that you don't have any savings, yet can afford to donate to Obama. Another book you might want to read "The Millionaire Nextdoor" learn how to be your own best charity and stop giving money to political campaigns.

Rick   October 3rd, 2008 6:44 pm ET

$166k certainly is well above this Joe Six-pack's salary, however when you look at some of the expenses she charges back to the people of Alaska, the actual level of income including perks is much higher. She charged the state a per diem for the 312 nights she spent at her home in Wasilla, for a total of $16,951. Then she charged the state for travel expenses for her family to the tune of $43,490. That's in addition to her $93k+ travel expenses. It must be nice to write off your kid's airline tickets.

But hey, she's just a hockey mom like so many others in this country, don't cha know.

Joe Biden made about $2.5 million for 2006 and 2007, and he contributed approximately $3,000 to charity. And he wants to redistribute the wealth? YOU first, Joe!

Sometimes States elect Governors like Evan Meecham, George Wallace, and Lester Maddox – yes and Sarah Palin. Go figure.

Bill   October 3rd, 2008 6:41 pm ET

Did you know based on “fact check” done today by CNN, about 98% of what Palin said last night was either completely false or so misleading it bordered on the ridiculous? It makes me sick to think there are people so dumb they actually support her. This is no joke to anyone I know, to actually promote this person as qualified for the VP position is a political stunt.

Shirley-Ohio   October 3rd, 2008 6:40 pm ET

Cheryl you have to stop listening to and reading the right wing blogs. They say ACORN has been under vestigation for years. If ACORN is commiting voter fraud they would have caught them by now and there would be no ACORN beleive me. The right wing blogs are liars and that is the very reason why Obama is winning. People don't like negativity and people are tired of the lies and this year that swift boat BS is not going to work.

Curliss   October 3rd, 2008 6:40 pm ET

Yes she can ! Yes she can!

Palin keep telling the truth. Tell them about McCains tax and health plan that will benefit them up to 2018. Keep telling them that a "white flag of surrender" in Iraq will bring down america both miltarily and financially. The world will no longer see america as a source of strength. Keep telling them, that its the same old insiders that are running for President, but yet, there is one ticket with an outsider that can bring perspective and realness to one of those tickets. Change we can believe in!

McCain / Palin 2008/16!

Pete in OR   October 3rd, 2008 6:37 pm ET

Upon review of the returns and disclosure forms, It's not clear why Palin did not report more than $4000 wage income from the state of AK for 2006 as governor with the bulk their wage income coming from Todd's BP w2. Unless the disclosure is incorrect, something is missing. They also took a noncash charitable contribution without describing what it was. I think some clarification needs to be done for the public good.

MARY,FLORIDA   October 3rd, 2008 6:37 pm ET

Wise White Guy   October 3rd, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Deb, you need to turn off Fox news and start getting a little more informed. I would not be mentioning any pastor problems if i were a Palin supporter. Unless of course you think that a pastor laying hands on her and removing the evil withcraft is a positive election platform. Since we are mentioning what people have not done i am pretty sure that Joe Biden has not ignored a subpoena to testify in an investigation like the joke Palin did. Also pretty sure Joe Biden didn's come out and say that the VP position should be a free floating one with no oversight much like what Dick Cheney has done. How can you not compare these people to Bush and Cheney when they are absolutely no different. Right down to how Palin mispronounces nuclear just like Bush does. Makes us look like a country full of idiots!

Republican4Obama   October 3rd, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Palin is a religious zealot. If Barry Goldwater was still alive he'd kick McCain's butt for choosing a "cultural conservative" wackjob. Palin believes the "end of days" is near and that she has been chosen by God. We MUST keep her away from the nuclear launch codes! Oh, and that's "NU-CLE-AR", not "NU-CUE-LAR."

David, Silver Spring, MD   October 3rd, 2008 6:32 pm ET

"Deb" snarks that "at least she didn't give money to Rev. Wright, unlike some people"...

That may be, but her church is just as kooky. Her preacher did some kind of ceremony in Kenya to drive out some woman that people said was a witch.

Truth is, we don't know where those "charitable" contributions went.

Well glad they were released. Has nothing to do with the fact that she just isn't ready to be heart beat away from the Presidency though. She is like a neighbor on the PTA board, but not ready for Prime Time. All that winking and giggliing is so frustrating for me as a woman because who the heck would ever take her seriously!! All she can do is deliver lines, but when she has follow up questions (like in interviews) she faulters. That has not changed... she isn't ready. Biden on the other hand was really intelligent, well informed, and very diplomatic.

No wonder Palin's against Obama's tax plan - the Palins are probably earning enough that they would have to pay more in taxes. Guess she doesn't want to put her country first after all.

Anyone could see through all the winking, flirting, memorization, etc., etc. THIS is who you want one heartbeat away from the most powerful leader of the WORLD!!!?? Please....

Obama is Harvard educated! You republicans come up with the lamest excuses not to vote for him that it makes me think that deep down you are just bigots! Daniel   October 3rd, 2008 6:24 pm ET

If Palin isn't qualified to be Vice President then Obama surely isn't qualified to be President since their experience in public office is about the same. One could argue that she is better qualified than Obama. He has zero executive experience.

SameerJ   October 3rd, 2008 6:21 pm ET

Biden was in such a vulnerable place with the story about how he has lived and understood what it was like to be a single dad with kids and having to go through the tragic loss with the accident, where he lost his wife and daugther. It was such a personal and vulnerable moment that no matter who you are, republican or democrat, if you are human, you’d be touched by that. He almost choked on the memory of that moment. Without regard for the whole world that was watching. In such a vulnerable moment for him, as a mother herself, Sarah Palin should have at least said something decent to him before re-starting her political ‘pit bull nonsense’. Instead, the first words coming out of her mouth, mockingly were “There you go again, Joe!“. I would never vote for a person like Sarah Palin. The woman doesn’t have basic human “decency and goodness” – most American of values. All the crap from her about about putting the regular people first stinks of falseness. She doesn’t get my vote. I hope she doesn’t get yours. Not only does she not have basic empathy, she's also light on the fundamental knowledge and understanding scale. I know more people in my friends circle that have an order of magnitude better understanding of foreign issues and basic economy.

Also, I didn't know much about Joe Biden before, but I have new found respect for him now. As a VP, I feel so much more confident that he's more than ready for the job. I'm also confident that he can take over the reigns and lead the country as president if he has to in a heartbeat. I trust that his leadership skills and knowledge and experience compared to all this maveric BS any day.

Anita, New York   October 3rd, 2008 6:16 pm ET

Didn't Biden say in too many words that it is considered patriotic to share your hard earned money with the unfortunates when you pay higher taxes.... but who among the four candidates are more patriotic knowing the factoid below vis-a-vis charitable contributions. Apparently, both Obama and Biden are not walking the walk and not talking the talk! Compare and contrast!

Sarah and Todd Palin had a gross income of nearly $170,000 last year and paid nearly $25,000 in taxes. The couple made nearly $130,000 and paid about $12,000 in taxes in 2006 and donated more than $8,000 to charity over two years.

The Bidens had an adjusted gross income of $319,853 in 2007, including his Senate salary, book royalties, and his wife’s salary as an English teacher. But their charitable gifts totaled $995 — just 0.31 percent of their income, according to the TaxProf Web site.

The year before, they earned $248,859 and donated just $380, or 0.15 percent of their adjusted gross income. Over the past decade they reported giving an average of $369 a year to charity, Bloomberg.com reports.

According to Independent Sector, the average annual charitable donation among households earning in excess of $200,000 is $20,434.

The Bidens’ “lack of charitable giving at that level of income would definitely be outside the range of what we say is normal,” Russell James, a professor at the University of Georgia who conducts research on charitable giving, told Bloomberg.

Republican presidential nominee John McCain’s tax returns show he had an adjusted gross income of $386,527 last year and had charitable givings of $105,467, or 27.3 percent of income.

His wife Cindy files separately. His Democratic rival Barack Obama had $4.13 million in income in 2007 and gave $240,370, or 5.8 percent.

Mel in GA   October 3rd, 2008 6:16 pm ET

Rahn Hasbargen New Brighton, MN   October 3rd, 2008 6:15 pm ET

The base salary for the Alaska Governor is $125,000 per year, meaning between the fishing net income, the part time work with BP, and every other source of income, that leaves $41K of income from all sources for 2007. The per diem is lieu of an expense reimbursement, meaning it is NOT taxable income (this is why politicians like to "hide" salary as per diem). The fishing equipment expense is in the Schedule C expenses as part of his business enxpenses that gets Todd to a $15K net business income. As an acccountant myself, I see nothing extraordinary in the two years of disclosed returns. In fact, outside of the Governor's income, it is a VERY nondescript return. Most Governors make more income, and just about every Congressperson and Senator does too. I just do not think you can have a lower income and still have a job that minimially qualifies you for the presidency or vice presidency, except for coming straight out of the military.

z   October 3rd, 2008 6:15 pm ET

Where's the remaining years? We want 10 years not 2. Also, how much of McCain's income is hidden in Cindy's returns. They file separately do avoid full disclosure.

Palin's performance last night was totally unprofessional. Call-outs and winks???

It's time for MEET THE PRESS where Sarah will actually have follow-up questions. It's more difficult to memorize scripts for those. Remember Couric? She asked SIMPLE follow-ups and Sarah freaked out and is now calling her unfair.

BTW, Sarah – when memorizing scripts, it's also important to memorize what questions would apply to them. You just regurgitated talking points that did not usually fit the question – thus, avoiding answering the question. Did you think we would not catch that??

I watched the VP debate last night. Sarah Palin talked in circles. I really hope the women of this country do not vote for her just because she is a women. God help us if they do. IF McCain/palin wins what will happen if the old guys dies(god forbid) but really, we as American people really need to think about that. Do we really think this women can run this screwed up country? I don't. Yes, we do need a change but not to that extent. I had to turn off the debate several times, I just couldn't listen to her anymore. I feel the same way when I hear baby Bush talking. I for one am sick of feeling like that when the leader of our country is talking. To many blunders and to many cover-ups is what we have been dealing with for eight years now. We need honesty and truths. I don't think we would get that if we have democrats in office. I don't see anything getting better if we don't change over.

That level of income is NOT Joe Six-Pack's. And they have the gall to call Obama elite! Palin said earlier their investments have taken something like a $20,000 hit. Lots of Joe Six-Pack families don't even have $20,000 in savings, let alone the roughly $200,000 Palin's took a hit from. Give us a break with all this "I'm-just-like-you" baloney.

I don't care about their taxes; however, I DO care about McCain's.
A man with 12 houses (or is it 11, now that one mansion is up for sale?) and 5-plus cars CAN NOT relate to me in any form or fashion.

What I DO care about is TROOPERGATE. Let's hear the final report on that.
This woman supposedly "delivered' at last night's debate - only because she talked non-stop and sounded coherent?
It's not enough - she does not represent me, and she can't relate to me, either. Winks, folksy talk and claiming she's a "maverick" may cut it with small towns here in the West, but that's not what's needed in the White House. Period.
Go home, Sarah, and tend to your family. They need you - we don't.

The rules to write off mileage are very strict with the IRS. I find it more than odd that their stated mileage used for a tax deduction is an even amount IE: 5000 miles

You are required to document each trip with the beginning and ending mileage + the reason it is a business expense

Not an accountant but it looks odd to me. I've owned my own businesses for over 30 years and never had a yearly mileage expense come out to a round number over and over.

Looks like someone was guessing which is not allowed by the IRS.

ahna   October 3rd, 2008 6:08 pm ET

If you think you're paying high taxes now then go ahead and vote for Obama. He still lacks experience and his ideas of "fixing" things is gonna cost all of us taxpayers. Sarah lacks experience too but she isn't running for President and time is on her side to learn more about being a VP. Joe Biden said it was the Patriot thing to do regarding paying higher taxes. I beg to differ. I don't know anyone out there with all the answers and until this "special" person somehow appears I will cast my vote for the one I feel will protect our country and help us heal and improve. "The Palins are way above the chariety giving then Joe Biden!"

Depends what you mean by "charity." Knowing Palin's type, that probably means it all went to some megachurch evangelist who promised to give it to the poor but actually used it to buy a Porsche and build a bigger church to his own glory.

She'd be a lot more impressive if she supported government programs that help the poor. 1) you wouldn't need to be giving charity if that these were in place and 2) they've always given better results than simply flat taxing and hoping the people at the top grow a conscience. Why do you think the poor keep voting Democrat?

Have the qualifying credentials for any governor running for President or Vice President been scrutinized and ridiculed as much as those of Sarah Palin? I'm a senior citizen and I don't recall it even for a presidential candidate. There have been several in recent years. Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan are the first to come to mind. It appears to me that the media is trying to destroy a conservative woman. If she were a liberal with the same credentials, they would LOVE her.

I'm becoming a real media hater because I don't think they examine candidates equally but with a bias.

Also, is it true that 3 former Fannie Mae executives are now participating in the campaign for Barack Obama? If so, it's ridiculous that it is being brought to the public attention by the media.

For those who are NOT aware, Joe Biden has done plenty of debates over many many years. Sarah use to listen to him as a child. Compare these years to Sarah's few weeks of preparation for VP discussions and you have to realize she has held her own!! She has been governor of Alaska and she has much to learn and plenty of time to learn. She talks to us like our friends and neighbors would talk to us and she doesn't beat around the bush. I respect her honesty and pray she continues to be strong and resilient in these times when outsiders would like nothing more than to devour her for their own selfish pleasure. Frankly, I wish there weren't 2 different parties but rather just a couple of regular people running for the Presidency that can be true leaders. We haven't had that in a long time.

I love how Palin calls Obama "reckless" despite the fact that McCain chose a running mate with zero foreign policy experience and hasn't proven any ability to manage deficits – oh, but wait, she has a nice smile. Now that is reckless!

Obama and Biden's income tax & charitable contributions vs McCain's   October 3rd, 2008 5:51 pm ET

Sarah Palin is not ready to be next in line to the presidency. The way she decides to talk do not look farorable on Americans.

The debate was a flop and drmbed down for Sarah palin. The rest of the world will not dumb down talks that have serious concequneces to their nations.

Oh really! My friend's dog drowned in Japan last weekend.

Dee, VA   October 3rd, 2008 5:50 pm ET

Hmm. Average American income is about $42K. According to their tax records, the Palins paid an average of about $18K/year in taxes the last two years. They make a heckuva lot more $$$ than "Joe Six Pack."

Like Yale gradute G.W. Bush, she's knows how to put on a good "Aw shucks, I'm just like you" show. And like him, she smiles the sweetest when she goes for blood. I don't trust her to have the good of the country in mind any more than I trust him, bless her heart.

Brenda from Tampa Florida   October 3rd, 2008 5:48 pm ET

How does Palen compare to Condelessa Rice, Elizabeth Dole, or Hillary Clinton? She is not in their league either. There is a big difference from being an executive than being a leader. A leader she is not. She consistently frames for America who she represents: hockey moms or six-packs. What about the rest of us? Her principles are at the bottom of the barrell if she would blame Kathy Couric for her poor interview. It was an easy interview in a quiet and calm setting. How will she perform at a real press conference? She has to be willing to take responsibility and be accountable for the personal and professional deficit; it's very visisble. We are not voting at a beauty pageant. As a woman, I'm really disgusted that she can not stand or think on her feet after saying that she believed she was qualified. She is sorry, sorry, sorry folks in 2008 and I don't think that will change by 2012. It amazes me that people are lifting her up as a representative of women. She just does not seem to posses any depth or intellect, she speaks in gobbledygook. She is a poor role model for our young girls. How do we encourage them to reach their highest potential when the bar has been lowered so far that people believe that she is an acceptable candiate for anything other than PTA. I'm really questioning what must take place in Alaska. My guess is that she is taking credit for someone close to her who is doing the real work. Her gift is in senseless chatter. She does not represent me as a woman, executive, mom, or intellectual!!! We don't want anymore female air heads in Tampa or the US who set the real women of American back decades. Stop the Madness. I wish it were not true, but there is a hole in her bucket!

Independent Dave, Iowa   October 3rd, 2008 5:47 pm ET

Just so you know Palin, when Joe said "Drill, Drill, Drill", he was quoting T. Boone Pickens from Pickens TV ad last summer, before you came on the scene. Your "Drill Baby, Drill' was stolen from that, as was your "There you go", stolen from Reagan in his debate with Jimmy Carter in 1983.

CPA sites I've read say they should include the per diem $17,000 they took.

Guy, San Diego   October 3rd, 2008 5:33 pm ET

If I had been Gwen Ifill, I would not have allowed Sarah to ignore my questions. It was an insult to the process of the debate and the voters.

This is the kind of administration John will have. He'll ignore the American people and say he's doing everything for the American people, but it will actually be for himself.

John is a snake. Only a snake would crawl on his belly to leave a woman who had just been in an accident and three kids. Cindy Lou is also a snake, because only a snake would have an affair with a married man, and retell the story on national television, about when they first "met", or "cheated" in my book.

Barack Obama

Where are Cindy McCain's?

Obama08FL   October 3rd, 2008 5:33 pm ET

Deb – you are what McCain wants and can have. He wants all dumb American such as yourself to vote for his ticket. It is funny that once Rev. Wright made his statements Obama cut tides with the guy, because Obama saw the true side of him. Why don't you see the true side of the Republican. It is funny that he votes 90% of the time of what Bush voted for, and he decides he wants to distance himself from him when he starts running for president. Are you kidding me!!!!!

Had enough of the bs yet?   October 3rd, 2008 5:32 pm ET

I'd like to know the charities the Palin's donated to. Was it that outfit that is for Alaska succeeding from the Union? Was it donations to the outfit that is hateful toward Israel that we can see the blurb about on Utube? I think it's about time the Palin's are totally investigated by the FBI. They remind me of the people the FBI hunted down at Ruby Ridge and Waco. I'm also very fed up with all this kid glove, politically correct crapfest that's only screwing the American public out of honest talk. HONEST talk, not a whole lot of lying or spin.

ADG   October 3rd, 2008 5:31 pm ET

WE all have to pay taxes! If shes so charitable then she should help that 90 year old lady that shot herself!!! good job republicans have done the last 8 years 4more is just what we need! NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wonder if palin looks in the mirror and thinks about all the lies she has be telling, you shall not lie or put false wittness . thats all she seems to do....... Im sick of mccain and palin I cant imagen what it would be like with them in the white house. more of the same!!!

Dal CA   October 3rd, 2008 5:29 pm ET

Ok so if they are earning just that much and The Barracuda said they lost 20,000 in the down turn in stocks that would mean that they have a huge amount stashed away in the wall street. Todd has 500,000 worth of equipment on $50,000 salary is another thing that does not balance.
They have to be getting some good bacon from somewhere that is not being disclosed at all.
PORK BELLIES is the ultimate answer to this.
TROOPERGATE we should look at but I have a feeling that we will soon be looking a PORKGATE in Alaska.

Wake up people, look at the mess we're in because the Congress committees that were suppose to oversee Fannie and Freddie were not doing their job. I'll take my chances with Sarah Palin over these clowns anyday!!!!

I'm sure this would make everyone very happy. ONCE OBAMA MAKE THAT CHANGE, THE UNITED STATES WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN. Just remeber, be careful what you ask for, you just might get it. BEWARE!!!!!!!!!

Noelle, IL   October 3rd, 2008 5:26 pm ET

Cindy is not giving her tax returns up for nothing. She obviously doesn't think John is going to win. If she releases them, then he can't continue to be the man of "the people", while he's in the Senate.

7- 9 houses
13 cars
$300,000.00 for Cindy's convention outfit
$250,000.00 a year for servants

Voting for the Obama/Biden ticket and getting rid of George W. Bush once and for all – priceless.

Rodney Hopper   October 3rd, 2008 5:26 pm ET

Just 2 years? Seriously?

And... since the state is paying her for lodging in her own home, shouldn't she have to declare that as some sort of business income?

Maybe I just overlooked that part.

Katherine   October 3rd, 2008 5:26 pm ET

I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight...

* If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're "exotic, different."
* Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, a quintessential American story.

* If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.
* Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.

* Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.
* Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well grounded.

* If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.

* If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive.

* If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.
* If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a Christian.

* If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.
* If , while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state's school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant , you're very responsible.

* If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America's.
* If you're husband is nicknamed "First Dude", with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age
25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

OK, much clearer now.!!

THE BOTTOMLINE AS TO WHY JOE BIDEN SHOULD BE THE NEXT VICE PRESIDENT.   October 3rd, 2008 5:25 pm ET

The fact that Palin was able to speak correctly by using complete sentences, finally, should have been a given and not a measure of success. Sarah’s next step should be to try speaking complete words such as getting instead of gettin’ but I cannot expect too much at this point. Then maybe that is the “folksy” quality which I guess I do not understand up here in my elite ivory tower, surrounded by servants while I look out at the serfs sowing the fields. But apparently I am suppose to give her more time since she has only been in the race for 5 weeks. Tell that to Putin, Sarah Simpleton.

Biden, who I have only seen at the DNC and the debate far outshined Palin.

Most importantly Biden has a bond that I truly envy. When his son, Beau introduced him to the crowd at the DNC he had to pause when speaking about his Dad and it was obvious he loves his father very much. Then last night when Biden was talking about his sons and the horrible accident that took the lives of their wife, mother and sister, he choked up when discussing his kids. Since I have no kids, I can only imagine how it would be to care so much for someone it is obvious you would gladly and willingly give your life to save the life of your son. So, Joe, all those 2 hours train rides to go back home to be with your sons was worth every bit of your time and I commend you. That empathy is DEFINITELY a quality I want in a man that will have the ear of the President. Especially when the President is discussing whether to send the sons and daughters of America, to a pre-emptive war. A war that to date has killed 4,000+ and wounded 30,000 and still counting.

Walter Mannon   October 3rd, 2008 5:25 pm ET

America needs to move from me... to We.
Palin, McCain they're are about themselves not the people.
We need a reawakening of our allegiance to real vales and institutions that sustain all people and their neighborhoods. Obama is for the persons who can bring about these changes. Any one can see through the Plain grammar of this plan. We need real people, who can really make the changes for the 21st Century and on.

Oppose Zig Zag Express   October 3rd, 2008 5:24 pm ET

Who cares?

After Nov. 5th she will be gone from my living room anyways.

She wants to extend the powers of VP position like Dick Chenny, wishful thinking.

well maybe her witch doctor pastor is telling her something the rest of us don't know!!!

5 or 6 talking ponts will never get you the VP position in America, Not this time and not ever .

When will the McCain " Lies Express" pack up and leave Ohio, Penn. and Florida? I can't wait!!!!!

Dax   October 3rd, 2008 5:24 pm ET

What was her gross earning, and deductions? How much money did she give to her crazy church? ....It doesn't matter she was beaten last night in the debate. The only reason why she was destroyed was Biden had to wake a fine line. If he it to hard = over baring and a bully, to soft = he's an idiot or even sexist. Look I for one don't want Joe six pack running the country I love.

Here is another take on racism. If Barak Obama would have used slang would white america say he was down to earth? Black=Slang and White=Folksy down to earth gosh darn it we can identify with that.

A Warning to Obama supporter...GET OUT AND VOTE...BEFORE WE GET ANOTHER JOE SIX-PACK IN THE WHITE HOUSE.

Nan   October 3rd, 2008 5:23 pm ET

Her religion requires her to make a percentage of her income into charitable donations. Palin is trying harder and harder to appear as much of a redneck as she can. She thinks it is the way to win votes. We have had 8 years of George 12 pack. Someone you want to have a beer with. The result is a broken economy and an invasion of a country. It is time this country realized that there is nothing wrong with having a smart president.

Margo, PA   October 3rd, 2008 5:22 pm ET

I read the transcript and Sarah's English is horrible. She is not choosing to be folksy because it's a good effect, she has to be folksy, because that's all she knows.

I wouldn't have a problem with that if being folksy came with the knowledge and intelligence to run this great country. I like folksy, but I don't like it in a potential president of the United States– in this day and age. Give me intelligence and integrity.

Obama/Biden 08

Did anyone notice that she is paying 9% and 11% in taxes, when the standard rate is 38%. If we could get around all the loop holes in our tax code and get people to actually pay - oh, I don't know – maybe what I pay (in percentile), America might not have such a huge deficit.

Hey Matt – Obama would only have to report the house(s) if the dead or made up person he registered while in ACORN voted Republican. So in other words, no he didn't.

If Obama wins the tax forms will be simple. One checkbox that says "Are you Oprah, a Democrat, illegal immigrant or out of work minority." If you click yes, then you'll get a refund. If you click no, then you'll have to pay 100% of your earnings.

Wake up people, in Obama's world if you make more than 40,000 a year, you WILL be considered rich, and you WILL be taxed.

Don't believe the hype! NOBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dorothy, Kansas   October 3rd, 2008 5:18 pm ET

CNN~Can you please investigate the voter fraud going on in Ohio from the group, ACORN, and what involvement Obama may have/has. He has ties to that group. Please be FAIR and BALANCED and give people what they need which is UNBIASED reporting!
Thank you….hope this gets posted

How can you Obama people keep ignoring the facts about your candidate….one after the other, questionable people and organizations he's tied to! Please, wake up and seriously check out his affiliations before it's too late..one day you'll wake up and the GREAT United States will be something totally differnent and not in a good way!

Dear Cheryl,

We're not Obama people, we're Americans.

You don't want CNN to investigate Barack because you're debating whether or not to vote for him. You're voting for McCain anyway, you just want Obama to lose the election. Well, I say vote for your choice and I'll vote for mine.

I don't begrudge her making that amount of money, and I applaud her charitable donations.Heck–under Obama, she'll get a tax cut.

Of course, gotta say that it doesn't sound a lot like she is sitting around the ol' kitchen table, wondrin' where the next meal will come from as she made it sound. At least BIden was straight up about a past of challenge but his current comfort. And he didn't mention that he makes among the least of the sitting Senators. Oh–and he can count how many houses he has–one, his main investment.

Rev. Wright doesn't scare me. Although the delivery of his message left a lot to be desired, anyone who has an advanced education and/or coupled with a global understanding and perception of history, foreign policy, and America's place within it would not base their vote on a few Fox news sound bytes.

Seems like Rev. Wright scares the heck out of you, doesn't he? I'm sure you also know Senator Obama middle name right? Palin is the biggest political failure in the making.

Al   October 3rd, 2008 5:14 pm ET

I have to admit that she did do better in the debates than I had thought she would do. While I got to know her through watching her last night and saw that she is a good person, she should never ever take it personal that she is not ready for this position, being a heartbeat away from the Presidency. There are 3 valid points here 1) She evaded answering a lot of important questions, which left a lot of doubts in my mind. 2) She didn't seem to come to the realization that John McCain is going to magically and suddenly change and become a different person and be just like her once he were to get elected, and his record clearly does demonstrate that he would not be a maverick in anyway. He is just like the rest of the republican bunch that has been in power for the past 8 years and to expect him to suddenly change overnight is not a realistic expectation. 3) Her foreign policy experience and policy opinions are not up to par, in my opinion, especially when I listened to the remarks about the location of Al Queda along with her views on Iraq. On the domestic front, she did mis-step on the tax and healthcare issue a little. She proved that she is a sharp debater up there, but when breaking down the substance of the issues and opinions that were expressed, I feel that she is too much in step with John McCain's views and her attempts to separate her and John McCain from George Bush were not very convincing.

How can Republicans not see that? Are they just not as bright? I do not get this calling everyone the media elite or criticizing Washington either. She shouldn't criticize the government that she is ASKING US if she can run. It is idiotic It does not give me confidence in her at all. phyllis from tucson   October 3rd, 2008 5:06 pm ET

I'm completely for Obama BUT I wanted to listen to Palin to see what she had to say. Her talk was mostly sloganesque and hallmark cardesque but the really irritating thing was her nasal voice and pressured speech. I had to conclude that she is manic. After I realized that , everything else fell in to place. Her 'self-confidence' and her supposed charm spring from a personality that has disturbing manic symptoms. Did you notice how she used her hand to summon her husband to the stage and the five minutes she held that baby she patted him in a pressured, non-calming manner. She is scary. I think she's gotten so far because she is georgous and people excuse women for alot, if they have the looks. Her looks and her bullying behavior are a great team. Let's hope the American people see through it.

Most (if not all) of that "charity" went to her church. When you consider the tax amount paid, even what she gave was not the standard 10% (tithing).

When I consider what I paid in taxes last year, I see that she (they) makes approximately twice as much as my wife and I make combined. So, no, she does not represent me very well.

Stop focusing on Palin. She escaped with her dignity last night, of which, though an Obama/Biden supporter, I am glad. She clearly didn't know anything about most of the issues. Even Republicans got that, even if they say otherwise. But, she seems nice enough in a neighborly kind of way, but, clearly out of her league when it comes to vice presidency, and heaven forbid, the presidency. But, she is not a threat. We need to seal this thing by pointing out how McCain has the same policies as Bush, and we know where that got us, all the while getting out and registering people to vote and even doing some campaigning.

Cheryl, just because you buy into the right wing LIE that minorities and lower income people are to blame for the surprime crisis doesn't mean we all do. It's predatory lenders who are to blame.

(And Obama has no ties – try doing a factcheck sometime.)

And shady ties? Look at McCain's ties to the Keating 5, his campaign manager was getting kickbacks from Fannie Mae as recently as LAST MONTH and that loon Palin was a member of church that supported witch hunts and a racist group that wanted to SECEDE FROM THE US. That's treason, that Palin supported.

Take that log out of your eye before worrying about us Obama supporters, hon.

As for the GREAT United States being totally different in the future, did you look at how it is shaped up in the last 8 years? We have hit rock bottom and from here there is only one way out, UP. Washington insiders just can't stand someone that isn't on the take, and the media can't stand to be dead wrong. That is what all the attacks of Palin are about. Those Democratic women that can't stand her, think that a woman has to be dowdy and unattractive to be intelligent, she challenges their excuses for not taking care of themselves. The fact that the mother of 5 has an excellent figure and can turn their significant other's head is a threat. He was delirious with power the way he tried to shout him down. I think someone should investigate Sean Hannity and sue him for slander saying Obama has NPD. When did he get a liscense to practice.
Did you see how easy it was to express your opinion on CNN Blogs...Fox makes you register and tell them your age, income, education. What's that all about? It's easier to get credit than to give your opinion on Fox.

marketwizard1@cox.net   October 3rd, 2008 4:57 pm ET

I don't understand why some people are so angry about the amount of money other people earn. I know many people that grew up with nothing and but now live very well through hard, honest work that started in grade school through their entire life. We all have the same opportunities in America. Two years or ten years, millionaires or not, the tax return doesn't mean you're a good or bad person. Both parties are full of elected officials that earn more than 50% of tax paying Americans. Speaking of tax paying Americans, the IRS just released data showing the top 50% of of income earners pay 97% of all taxes collected. That statistic makes me curious why the lower 50% that enjoy the many free benefits given by the government complain so much about those of us in the upper 50% that pay for their benefits!

gill   October 3rd, 2008 4:57 pm ET

What is she hiding? Per diems, taxable fringe benefits, snow machinin proceeds, Heath Family Trust Fund (previously undisclosed)? I got some vettin to do.

Want her record as Governor and want to know her record more than 10yrs!!

Frank   October 3rd, 2008 4:57 pm ET

Too bad it didn't say how they made. For a family of seven (7), with a home and still paid $36,682, sounds like they made one hell of a lot of money!! I didn't think the Governor's pay was in the millions. Seems like there's much more to this story not being told.

Cheryl says we are all going to wake up and the US is going to be different – it is already different, and in a VERY BAD WAY!!

Why is it that if Obama wins, the US would be any worse off than it is now????? Hmm...
After George Bush and Cheney, anyone is better, except Mc-Palin ticket.

People continue to sleep-walk in this country that is not so GREAT anymore!! Love my country, but it is the truth.

(no reason to hide them if you have done nothing wrong). And we still haven't seen Johnny McCant's full medical records the size of a new york phonebook either... it would be great to know how sick he actually is.McCan't/Palin changing Washington through transparency!!!Republican women for Obama!

You know, hard-core Christians are supposed to TITHE (10%) their income to the church. Her evangelical Christian street-cred is in serious jeopardy with the revelation that she doesn't even come CLOSE to tithing. In fact, in the year that she only gave 1.5% of her income to charity, that isn't even average for a Protestant. (The average Protestant church member gives about 3% of gross income to his/her church.)

Pat F   October 3rd, 2008 4:54 pm ET

Ajay Jain TX, USA, you are SO full of it.

Ever heard of a 401(k)? The stock market is down over 10%. And $20,000 is 10% of $200,000. And it is not at all uncommon for hard working, union families like the Palins to have $200,000 in their 401(k). Todd is a member of the United Steel Workers, and I am certain that his benefits package includes a defined contribution pension fund with a 401K.

Maybe slackers like you don't bother to save and wait for the government to bail you out, but millions of Americans believe in looking after themselves and not waiting for hand-out. GO GET A JOB.

Hagel''s comments say it all.It doesn"t matter if PALEN is guilty or not in Troopergate or if she shares her tax returns. She just isn"t qualified to be President, and that''s what she could become. It is S-T-U-P-I-D to suggest that seeing Alaska from your state gives you foriegn policy experience. Yet, this was first heard on FOX News, then repeated by Cindy McCAIN, Then repeated by Sarah Palen, then repeated by the McCAIN Campaign Manager, the repeated by McCAIN and then repeated at least a dozen more times by PALEN. So, I say we don"t vote for the PALEN/McCAIN ticket and then "Troopergate" is Alaska''s problem, not ours. Listen to Republican Senator Chuck Hagel when he says "it is a huge stretch to say that Ms. Palen could become Cammander and Chief". And that is what she could become. Oh, and before someone says it, this is NOT about PALEN being a woman. There are many qualified women in both the GOP and The Democratic Party, PALEN just isn"t one of them.

It is about the Vision of America and Americans future!

So please CNN make sure McCain is playing fair, because I am sure he will do ANYTHING to win this election! I hope you don't let McCain off the hook! BP and ConocoPhillips operate the gas fields that would feed that pipeline. they are so ticked off, they are now planning another pipeline.....they dont need Alaska's approval....just the FERC's (federal energy regulary commission) approval.

here's the best part.....if transcanada's pipeline fails, they have to be re-imbursed 3 times...YES 3 TIMES what they have invested...and where is she going to get the money from....me and you.

Dear Cheryl. Do a search for "Keating Five". McCain is a done.

kc in hick-town texas   October 3rd, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Cheryl – no offense but you are a moron. I know that sounds harsh, but CNN is actually very fair and balanced in their reporting. You just don't like it because it doesn’t match the spam e-mails you get or the crap you find on FOX "news". I mean, "we report it, you decide"? I decided a long time ago that they were full of s&^t.

Obama is a strong leader, he has a strong running mate, and I want someone in the white house who can speak a complete sentence without sounding like a... well, I'll settle for a complete sentence. McShame can hardly remember who to speak to or about, Palin is a liar.

I want to know how Todd runs 2 businesses (fishing and snowmobiling?) and makes nearly half of their gross income. Just HOW much does the GV of Alaska make? I think there is some unaccounted for revenue stream somewhere. And if they only make that much a year how can they have so much in the Stock Market that they lost $20,000 the day it fell almost 900 points. hmmm. I am not a math major, nor an accountant, but this just doesn't add up...

Frodo   October 3rd, 2008 4:49 pm ET

This year congress directly went against the majority of American's interests. Having been confronted with Democrats AND Republicans both siding against the wishes of voters, a large number of voters are shifting to the largest third party, the Libertarian Party.

Candidate Bob Barr is experiencing a groundswell of support after the two major parties voted against their constituencies while Barr has been steady in his opposition to a government bailout.

Al Ram   October 3rd, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Why only 2 years? What are they hiding? Shouldn't they release all income tax returns for at least the last 10 years? This refusal to release information only generates more questions than answers. As an independent voter, if Palin won't grant access to even routine information I have real choice but to vote for Obama.

A real "maverick" would release ALL income tax returns.

INDEPENDENT WOMEN FOR OBAMA/BIDEN   October 3rd, 2008 4:48 pm ET

Anita from Arizona   October 3rd, 2008 4:48 pm ET

Hey Cheryl,

Maybe CNN hasn't reported on that because there's no evidence to support your claim. Did you hear that from some Obama slamming email made up by the worse brand of people who are full of hate?

derrick   October 3rd, 2008 4:48 pm ET

Why does it matter to any of you that you can't see her tax returns? Where are your tax returns JUSTIN ROOD and MARCUS BARAM. Are you looking to get back at someone who asked for the Clinton's tax returns and now think "Yeah, now we'll get them." Try reporting on things that our great country really need to know about like why our economy is failing, why the oil companies are fleecing us to death and why no one, seems interested in bringing our men and women home from these wars.

MEP   October 3rd, 2008 4:48 pm ET

She apparently believes she is above the law– can the American people only count to 2? The Alaska court did not shut down the state inquiry despite heavy pressure from Republicans. I wonder what else she has tucked away under her bouffant hairdo. She is running for VP, not Miss Congeniality.

willetta suttle   October 3rd, 2008 4:47 pm ET

Palin did far better than I expected, however if she wasn't comfortable answering a question she would twist an answer to something she had been prompted for. I have been a Biden fan for years because he just tells it like it is as he did last night.

tedious898   October 3rd, 2008 4:47 pm ET

There was no way we could afford a fancy home on a lake, a seaplane and a fishing boat like the Palin's. Alaska has a high cost of living and I refuse to believe they made less than we did and live like they do.

Al Ram   October 3rd, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Mrs. Palin don't be mad that Sen. McCain did not consult you regarding the pull out from Michigan. Remember for Mr. McCain you are only a decoration to attract audience who will listen to him during your political rallies. What do you think is your purpose. And congratulations you are attracting audience.

By the way, please don't blame the honorable Ms. Katie Couric for simple questions that she asked that you cannot answer. If you are really bright you can answer that right away. So please don't blame Ms. Couric. Blame yourself to enter a political contest which you are prepared. Ok!!!

AJ   October 3rd, 2008 4:46 pm ET

It really isn’t necessary for the candidate’s tax returns to be open to the public. Nor should the candidate’s personal life need to be an open book. This kind of scrutiny does nothing but turn good people off on public service and leave us with the caliber of candidates we have today. Like we really can’t do better than McCain and Obama? Please!! Americans worry way too much about that kind of personal information and don’t seem to care about views on issues or qualifications.

What is Cheryl Thinking?   October 3rd, 2008 4:43 pm ET

Cheryl, don't you understand that most of America is supporting Obama for that reason? We woke up and after eight years of GWB as president, our once GREAT country was practically into the gutter. And now John McCain wants to continue most of those policies that got us there. That's why we support Obama, because he is the only one that can possibly bring about change and restore this country to the greatness that she deserves – IN A GOOD WAY!

That Other Jerry   October 3rd, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Get over this crap, people; this country has issues to deal with! If you think Obama's got the answers, fine, vote for him. Or vote for McCain, or Ralph Nader, or whomever you think can do the job. Just for Pete's sake stop obsessing over these stupid non-issues like who released their tax forms first and who disclosed the most years. Go over and read Hilary Rosen's column–at least her criticism of Sarah Palin is intelligent and issues-based.

They are adorable, but there is no way she should be on a national ticket. It is painful. McCain knew what this would be like for them - especially the pregant daughter - but poll numbers said she would be clever choice. There were lots of older more experienced women he could have chosen.

Also note that the only W2 that is on file for Todd Palin is from his income as an employee of British Petroleum and all other incomes have been estimated since "TP was not able to get a copy" of his W2.

Did you really think no one was going to look closely at this?

It is so sad that most Republicans still fail to learn that, when this is all said and done, it will no longer be about the "party." Instead, it will be about you and me that made another "foolish" investment for another 4 years!

We wanted the average Joe Blow, and we have had GW Bush for 8 years now. Looking at what we are facing as Americans from GW Bush, don't we have the common sense that this is no longer about "attachment" to a party, especially when that party is drowning this nation?

For the first time in 8 years, we have a Constitutional Scholar, baced by a brilliant VP. And all we talk about is Palin-McCain. What will these Palin-McCain group offer, not only the U.S., but the world that is waiting for America to lead again!

J from DC   October 3rd, 2008 4:39 pm ET

At this point her tax returns mean nothing to me as a voter. Her grasps of relevant info and Todd Palin’s ability to answer trooper gate questions does. Something about her reminds me of other things we the American people were mislead about. Her whole appearance from out of nowhere, and shielded persona seems very shady to me. It has that feeling like after a magician displays a trick, you are impressed, but you know it’s an illusion. You know something tricky was behind it, but you can’t figure it out. That’s how Palin makes me feel as a voter. Don’t get me wrong. I can accept defeat if a legit candidate wins. At least I knew Hillary was a real candidate. But, something here still does not smell right. I think the Press knows it, but they can’t put their finger on it either. Hope someone does, and soon.

Watching the VP debate, it was apparent that Palin does not have what it takes to be VP. Heaven help us if she ever became President, with such a lack of knowledge. Sen. Biden has the experience to step into the Presidents shoes if sometjhing should happen.

Wow, she is dumber than I thought. She makes less than $250,000 a year and still doesn’t have enough sense to recognize Obama’s tax plan would give her more money back than McCain’s. Now there is an intelligent person. We already know McCain could have to pay big time under Obama’s plan.

I am worried about Diebold, the Republican-run company dispensing the voting machines that have refused to accept legitimate ballots. The only chance McCain has is that they will dispense enough broken machines to give him and the village idiot the election.

Obama-Biden Supporter   October 3rd, 2008 4:38 pm ET

Cheryl,

You really need to do some research. If you do not like Obama it would be more honest of you to just say so. But I guess you have learned from the McCain-Palin ticket. You are the one who needs to "wake up" my friend. We are in a financial meltdown and it has to do with mortgage companies being DEREGULATED! Todd Palin was a member of the Alaskan Independence Committee, Sarah Palin has NO KNOWLEDGE of anything that she needs to have knowledge about to run for any office.

So once you can stop ignorning McCain and Palin's ball of lies that is starting to unravel before their very eyes, they maybe you can see them for what/who they are and represent (i.e. big business) then maybe someone may actually listen to you, until then SHUT UP!!!

Palin for setting the trend for future conservatives. The Gay and Lesbian issue is off the table and we ALL left and right, believe gays are God's children just as much as anyone else.

I also appreciate that Gov. Palin believes that government intervention in the markets is NECESSARY for the proper functioning of capitalism and that we need not question whether we need strong government controls over the economy, but rather how much intervention is needed at any given moment.

I also like the fact that Gov. Palin now agrees with Sen. McCain that Global warming is man-made, that Al Gore was right from the beginning and the oil industry must be eliminated in this century and replaced with carbon neutral fuels.

Gov. Palin, welcome to the world – we are ALL liberals now. Liberal ideology wins, if you win Governor.

What is McCain hiding?

Oh and Cheryl.... Obama's "ties" to all organizations including ACORN has been well documented and his insignaficate "ties" to these groups dont worry the American people. Because these groups are set up to help the American people. Look into McCains ties to lobbyists and huge oil. Look at where most of his donations come from. Obama's donation are a majority in small amounts from everyday American citizens!

I wager a guess that at her age, Sarah Palin has a higher net worth than Biden at 44. What a farce. PS. Why is she so worried about paying for college. Her oldest two children aren't even in college. Apparently education is not a big issue up in Alaska.

voter   October 3rd, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Cheryl

Obama does not have ties to ACORN. He never worked with them or trained their volunteers. Evern ACORN has admitted that. This is a smear from the republicans. If we want to talk about voter fraud, lets discuss how democratic voter registration is being purged in the battleground states. This needs to be investigated considering that republicans are known for stealing elections.

LS   October 3rd, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Cheryl, regardless of the facts you are claiming that exist about Obama, they are obviously not-as-important as you seem to think they are.

Besides, whatever Obama has done, any sort of human error that may exist, doesn't compare to the human errors McCain has done in the last several weeks, months, years – no comparison whatsoever.

This election is about what can be done to improve this country's future – not to rely on hopeless circumstances McCain has shown to have created in the past and present (his negative and scrambled views especially).

Have a nice weekend.

vicky   October 3rd, 2008 4:32 pm ET

LOL!!!

She will only talk to FauxNews now...
that's okay...

Palin exceeded expectations only because the bar for her was set inside the rut of a wagon wheel. Biden absolutely dominated on issues and leadership. I encourage everybody to watch the debate again. Clearly, if something were to happen to McCain, Palin would need yet another script to proceed – and as with the last eight years and continuing through the McCain Campaign, it will be written by GOP lobbyists.

Bottom Line: Our own “Six-pack Joe” moved more uncommitted voters to Obama than Palin did for McCain. Score 2 out of 2.

I can't wait for the next Presidential debate!!!!!

This woman is beyond belief! Two years? Why not 10 like Joe Biden?
What's she hiding? Why does she have to wait until days after an interview to come up with an answer? Her folksy attitude at the debate last night was unprofessional and unstateswoman-like. I found it offensive. These are serious times and we deserve candidates that are serious about leading us through them. Sarah Palin is not one of them.

Hey Cheryl.

Believe it or not, the GREAT United States is already in the toilet because of McSame and his cronies in Washington. We need Obama to get us out of this mess. But you can ask Palin how she feels about the country. She'll give you a wink, say gosh darn it and tell you some crap about being a hockey mom. When she finishes sputtering her lack of credible information, 4 years will have gone by and we would be back to normal (under an Obama leadership). McCain would be somewhere in a POW camp in his mind.

Jason   October 3rd, 2008 4:30 pm ET

Cheryl, the list for "questionable people and organizations" that mccain is tied to far outways obamas. It's pretty disgusting that your campaign manager was receiving a 15k a month salary from fannie mae and freddy mac for the last 5 years with the sole job of defending AGAINST regulation. They paid this mccain aide specifically to prevent the governement from regulating them!!!

This is just last ditch efforts by mccain/supporters to smear the winning ticket. It reeks of despiration

It was SO apparent that she was trying to recite memorized lines last night that it was actually pathetic. She couldn't answer any questions. What really got me was that she bought her infant son out at the end of the debate. I was thinking- what mother would have an infant out in a crowd of people at this time. He should have been in his crib asleep. But, when you are behind and pandering for votes, anything goes. This time, I am just saying NO! Enough is enough.

Per diem payments aren't normally counted as income, and don't seem to show up on their tax returns. That doesn't make accepting per diem for time spent at home ethical, but it doesn't count as income. Of course, it's normal for per diem to be an actual expense, but that doesn't bother Palin.

if you're Obama, speaking the truth is "reckless," but if you're Palin, embezzlement from the state of Alaska isn't so much a problem.

Even though McCain Camp sucessfully neutered Gwen Ifil by a predebate attack on her credibility, we should not be fooled by Palin’s Acting/ sparring abilities (although she had her Notes with her,but isn't that Cheating?) to sucessfully weave and bob and her canny ability not to answer questions she does not like in contradiction to her also not being able to intelligently answer complex questions on the spot! It seems as if she feels the American people have no need to be given intelligent, thoughtful answers to the pressing questions of today, and that we would rather be winked at and called hockey moms and Joe Sixpacks while our economy is in ruins! We need our candidates to present truth, not lies and talking points of lies which have nothing to do with reality. We have been lied too enough in this country. We need leaders who are of high moral character and who think their word is thier bond.

What I find so sad and, frankly, scary about the day after talk is that people are lauding that she was able to sounds coherent and string sentences together to make sense.

Is this the only expectation we have of the VP?? That they be able to speak clearly? How is it that this is where we are as a nation that speaking clearly is the only thing we require of them to consider them a success?

I want a VP candidate who demonstrates a clear understanding of the issues at hand, can communicate their position and define why they hold that position.

LB-NJ   October 3rd, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Where's Obama& Mrs Obama Tax returns, I want to see what they did
with $1.6Millions they earned in 2007. The hypocrite so called candidate of the people, lives the high life. No wonder the Hollywood elite crowd is backing him. They're all rich like Obama.

Mack   October 3rd, 2008 4:21 pm ET

I wonder how factual those taxes are. Both seem to enjoy spreading misleading information and their taxes...why should we care. Who's paying mine.

Anita from Arizona   October 3rd, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Great, now release Cindy McCain's...... Her income benefits McLame so it matters.

Thomas   October 3rd, 2008 4:20 pm ET

They make less the Obama.... and gave more in charity!

Amazing...

Tony   October 3rd, 2008 4:20 pm ET

THE RACE WAS OVER LAST NIGHT AFTER "ROBOT BARBIE" AND SEN. BIDEN DEABTED.

NEXT FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10TH IS D-DAY FOR PALIN IN TROOPERGATE AND I GUARANTEE IT WILL BE A GUILTY VERDICT.

AFTER LISTENTING TO THIS STOOGE FOR TEH LAST FEW WEEKS AND SEEING HER 'DEBATING" A PRO LIKE BIDEN THE MCCAIN CAMPAIGN IS TOAST.

MCCAIN USED TO BE SEEN AS A MAN OF CHARACTER AND A ROLE MODEL.

THIS CAMPAIGN, BEGINNING WITH THE PRIMARIES, HAVE SHOWN THE REAL MCCAIN. AN ANGRY, BITTER, ARROGANT, WHINER.

PALIN PROVED ALST NIGHT THAT SHE IS THE CLOWN THE VAST MAJORITY THOUGHT SHE WAS.

ON NOVEMBER 5TH, MCCAIN WILL RETURN TO WHINING IN THE SENATE AND PALIN WILL BE SHIPPED BACK TO ALASKA AND FORGOTTEN WITHIN THE WEEK.

PRESIDENT OBAMA, VICE-PRESIDENT BIDEN '08-'16!

Tom   October 3rd, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Palin blew the socks off Biden last night.

Brian   October 3rd, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Hey Palin... you're snow jobs might have worked up in Alaska, but they're not going to work down here in the lower 48 (or Hawaii)!!!

We've just endured eight long years of disastrous incompetent government and you're not going to get elected for a very simple reason... we don't want another four.

Mack   October 3rd, 2008 4:20 pm ET

I wonder who factual those taxes are. Both seem to enjoy spreading misleading information and their taxes...why should we care. Who's paying mine.

PoliticoPundit   October 3rd, 2008 4:19 pm ET

About time.. Good move

Michael M, Phoenix AZ   October 3rd, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Only two years? Hope she included all the per diem payments she received from the State of Alaska for living in her own home also.
As a manager for a mid-major retailer, the only per diem I could receive was from actually being on a business trip or location transfer. I was not allowed to take family members on business trips unless I paid for them in advance for travel expenses. On return from a trip, I had to submit all my receipts for reimbursement or repayment if I got an advance. And not everything got reimbursed if I went over the daily allowance....then it was out of pocket. If the company paid the expenses for me such as moving expenses, that expense was then included on my W-4 at year end as income.

Let the fun begin!

McCain Invented the BlackBerry, Palin Invented the Manure Spreader   October 3rd, 2008 4:19 pm ET

It's about time!

Sorry to say, it's too little too late. The numbers are starting to harden, and McCain/Palin is too far behind.

As announcer Chick Hearn usde to say, "The ballgame is in the Admiral Refrigerator. The door's closed, the light's out, the eggs are coolin, the butter's getting hard, and the Jell-O's jigglin!!"

Joanne Buck   October 3rd, 2008 4:19 pm ET

IF they earned the money honestly, then it is none of our business.
Sounds like they do give to charity.....congrats to them.

Two years only? I think it was hours after Biden was picked that they released 10 years of his and his wife's tax returns.

How about you guys have Cindy McCain release hers now? If Todd Palin released his why not Cindy?

CW in PSL   October 3rd, 2008 4:18 pm ET

We want to see the last 10 years....and nothing less!!

Ajay Jain TX, USA   October 3rd, 2008 4:18 pm ET

A couple that can loose upto $20,000.00 in stocks (by Palin's ow admission), just imagine what their holdings would be?

Cheryl   October 3rd, 2008 4:18 pm ET

CNN~Can you please investigate the voter fraud going on in Ohio from the group, ACORN, and what involvement Obama may have/has. He has ties to that group. Please be FAIR and BALANCED and give people what they need which is UNBIASED reporting!
Thank you….hope this gets posted

How can you Obama people keep ignoring the facts about your candidate....one after the other, questionable people and organizations he's tied to! Please, wake up and seriously check out his affiliations before it's too late..one day you'll wake up and the GREAT United States will be something totally differnent and not in a good way!

Jozee   October 3rd, 2008 4:18 pm ET

I love that old release of the tax returns on a Friday afternoon in hopes that all eyes and minds will be focused on the $700 Billion Bailout that just went thru the Senate.

McCain, gosh darn it, your's such a Maverick.

Wow ... that's allot of tax money. They sound very wealthy. Much more wealthy than this average American.

Bruce   October 3rd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Palin did not save her face last night, and today she has exposed the southern cheeks as she opened her mouth to say someone was not fit to be president "In her mind in her WORLD" what ever or where ever that might be. Anyone that thinks that her performance last night shows she is qualified to be VP REALLY NEEDS TO GET A GRIP.

Just thinnk of her trying to talk to a real worl leader on serious matters, something deeper than their childs name. can you think how her flirting will be thought of by some that have VERY LOW REGARD FOR WOMEN in the first place. The Saudies do not allow women to drive cars they would not think her cute winks and flirtations to be propper actins and work consider her to be the lowest type of woman. But then maybe. . .

angee   October 3rd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Who cares! No one wants this insensative woman becoming vice president. I hope she and McCain lose BIG! I think her performance at last night's debate was horrifying. Why? Because she memorized her talking points and she was smiling when Mr. Biden was getting "choked up" over the loss of his wife & daughter and she had the most annoying "wink"! I'm going to say what others want to say but won't "I JUST DON'T LIKE HER!"

Jason   October 3rd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

She donated more then Biden's .03%

Diamond from Florida   October 3rd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Is that all there releasing? I guess if they were to release it all, It would prove that Palin is no average Joe "six pack"
anyway.......

Happy Anniversary Barack and Michelle Obama!

WhoIsPalin?   October 3rd, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Biden released his a longtime ago.Typical OBAMA/BIDEN showing Leadership while McCain/Palin can only Follow. Just say NO to King and Queen of Copycats McCain-Palin!!

She goe on about being joe six pack...well I do not make enought o give that much to charity, in fact what they paid is more than I make....

tws1906   October 3rd, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Are these authentic returns from those years?

Aygola   October 3rd, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Still waiting for McCain's

Tom   October 3rd, 2008 4:14 pm ET

WOW $8,205 to charity. That's about 10 times more than Obama and Biden together.

Thai   October 3rd, 2008 4:14 pm ET

There is someting that seems to stand out to me, and I am wondering why no one else is picking up on this.

Ya know, some years back, there was a governor from a very large, oil producing state running for one of the top spots in our government. The person said that he knew oil and would secure the future of our economy and bring down oil prices.

Hmmm who was that person again?

I think this is a very simple and easy link to make. I know i'm not the only one thinking this right? An inexperienced governor... oil rich state... bordering other countries...

Anyway it's just a point i hope people start to pick up upon.

Blinker   October 3rd, 2008 4:13 pm ET

wow $8,205....some people find it hard to give up a dollar.

Joey   October 3rd, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Thank God the election is just a few days away. Palin is a joke that't not funny. How could anyone in their right mind elect this person to any office of any kind?

Vegas Barbie for Obama   October 3rd, 2008 4:12 pm ET

How much did Todd donate to the AIP? Scary that anything that Michele Obama, a graduate from one of the most prestigious universities in this country gets scrutinized for everything she's ever said or done, and this clown, Todd, was a member of s SECESSIONIST group and no one blinks an eye.
p.s. McCain in Denver today sounded like a dirty old man with his "how 'bout Sarah Palin last night, heh?" with that old man growl in his voice...scary, the both of them.

Biff   October 3rd, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Now how a bout a stinking press conference, already??

i mean, she's only running for vice president of the united states...

Mickie in PA   October 3rd, 2008 4:11 pm ET

She actually paid more in taxes than most of us make in one year and she represents the little guy (ha ha ha ha ha), give me a break.

Michelle from DA Bronx, NY   October 3rd, 2008 4:11 pm ET

The Palins are way above the chariety giving then Joe Biden!

SOUTHERN HOTTIE   October 3rd, 2008 4:10 pm ET
