Sen. Obama's new ad targets Sen. McCain's proposal for changing the tax treatment of health care benefits.
Sen. Obama's new ad targets Sen. McCain's proposal for changing the tax treatment of health care benefits.

(CNN) – The Obama campaign is releasing a new television ad that targets Sen. John McCain’s tax proposals relating to health care benefits.

“One Word,” a 30-second spot, focuses on McCain’s proposal to tax health care benefits that are currently not taxed. The McCain proposal would tax “your health care for the first time ever,” the announcer says. “It’s a multi-trillion dollar tax hike. The largest middle class tax increase in history,” the ad also says.

The new ad, which will begin to air nationally on Monday, was released on the same day that Sen. Barack Obama is set to give a speech focused on health care and taxes.

At a midday rally in Newport News, Virginia Saturday, Obama will call McCain’s health care tax proposal “an old Washington bait and switch” and “a shell game,” according to prepared remarks provided by the Obama campaign. “He gives you a tax credit with one hand – but raises your taxes with the other,” Obama will also say, referring to the fact that the tax credit included in McCain’s proposal will be paid to a taxpayer’s health insurance provider instead of to the taxpayer.

In a sign of how important issues economic issues like taxes and government spending have become to voters, the McCain campaign has already responded to Sen. Obama’s prepared remarks. Obama “is lying to voters,” McCain-Palin spokesman Tucker Bounds said in a statement released by the McCain campaign Saturday morning. “It’s a bald-faced lie because John McCain will improve the tax code so that middle class paychecks aren’t used to pay government bureaucrats but instead will pay for the access to health care Americans deserve,” Bounds added.

On Friday, both campaigns released new television ads that also spotlighted tax issues.

(Full script of "One Word" after the jump)

Script, "One Word," 30 seconds:

Obama voice-over: "I’m Barack Obama and I approve this message."

Announcer: "On health care, John McCain promises a tax credit.

But here’s what he won’t tell you:

McCain would impose a new tax on health benefits, taxing your health care for the first time ever.

It’s a multi-trillion dollar tax hike. The largest middle-class tax increase in history.

You won’t find one word about it on his website.

But the McCain tax could cost your family thousands.

Can you afford it?"

I wonder why McCain and his "Straight Talk Express" haven't felt it was important to disclose those key details of his plan. Oh wait, it's because now he's willing to sacrifice his honor to win an election.

It's not "Country First" with McCain and Palin. It's "Me and My Campaign First." Thanks, but no thanks Sen McCain and Gov Palin!

$5000 tax credit is only good for those that actually have jobs or money. The right continues to lie about healthcare, that universal healthcare does not work. When are you going to get it, you are only as strong as the weakest amongst you. How can the religious right be against universal healthcare they should ask themselves what would Jesus say??? Shame on them how they have been used by the Republicans.

Deb (New York)   October 4th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

We can not once again let the Republican party swiftboat us. I am glad the campaign and the DNC is hitting back swiftly. The fact Gov Palin is discussing people from Chicago with ties to Senator Obama is incredulous particularly since she has an abuse of power case going on right now in Alaska which the McCain camp wanted to put a lid on. What about Keating 5? Can't we bring that up?

Not this time! America will not fall for the dirty tricks of Bush/Cheney/McCain in this election! And as for Palin? She is a pititful example of who McCain would surround himself with if he were to win the Presidency. She is pathetic. Knows little about world affairs and is in over her head. McCain did not even consult her on his plans to pull out of Michigan. She is not even in the loop yet she says the VP powers should be expanded under the Constitutional laws?

Sahah, honey, get some more e-mails going out to McCain's real staffers (to include Rick Davis of Fanny Mae/Mac claim and understand that you are being used to "energize the Republican Base" which really means to get America's racially motivated republicans to vote against what is best for America. Won't work because they even know McCain is just an angry old man who needs a nap!

I've always been told that any man that can't look you in the eye is a man you can't trust! McCain refusing to acknowledge O'bama at the first Presidential election was bazen and bazare and elitist! McCain is obviously still very angry at not winning in Vietnam (as per his 2003 interview written about in the October i 6th ssue of Newsweek) and this anger is continuing on into the Iraq occupation. Get over it McCain! Take a nap! Goodnight!

Redphilly   October 4th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

I finally understood today exactly what Obama means when he says McCain doesn't get it. How can a person who admits to having 13 cars and probably has more, and admits to having 7 houses, but probably has more of those also, understand me who can only afford to rent? I can't afford to buy even one house. How many houses has he bought for his children?

He has nothing in common with me and many other Americans. Obama says he thinks he does care though. But the fact that he would not even look at Obama at the debate tells me that he doesn't even care either. It was an insulting, racist thing for McCain to do and it is one of the reasons I can't vote for him.

Nidwaldner   October 4th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Under McCain's health plan there is no guarantee that a person would be able to get health coverage if they have a pre-exisiting condition or a disability. Even those with insurance have claims too easily denied. This renders the tax credit absolutely moot. There are no safeguards in McCain's plan to protect Americans. I work with children with disabilities and it is awful trying to get them the care and services they need. It's a constant battle with insurance companies.

Never mind that most families can easily spend over $5000 a year on premiums.

nelda   October 4th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

McCain is tricky and LIES ! He's going to make us pay more with our healthcare with hidden costs. This man has NO IDEA what's it like to struggle with medical bills. He's very rich and honestly does not understand.

However, Obama DOES UNDERSTAND AND KNOWS how it's like to live humbly, with being raised by a single mother and grandparents.

We need Obama,
He WILL BUILD us "The bridge to the future!"

Rachel   October 4th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

Obama's health care plan is so strong. McCain's is idiotic and uncapable of success without getting your own taxes raised in order for that money to be put to that effort. I completely agree with Obama.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   October 4th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

McCain could care less about unfortunate Americans who don't have health care, take a good look at his wealth and greed; 7 houses and 13 cars, $500 shoes and a wife who can pay more in one outfit than most people can pay in a mortgage, children who can afford to publish books when ours can't afford college tuition. McCain lives a silver spoon life while many hard working people are living one step away from the soup line and tent city.

Reality   October 4th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

While you are fighting tough to keep Obama from being elected, you are constantly spewing lies to attain the goal of getting McCain elected. The good people of the United States of America will not stand for this!!! It is very obvious that you would rather continue lying to the people than put "Country First". I would like to know how McCain feels he can help people get insurance by giving a 2500 for single, 5000 for family to purchase insurance. He doesn't say how he proposes to get insurance companies to lower insurance premiums, not to mention many who will not qualify for insurance due to pre-existing conditions. Back to the drawing board McCain. You don't live in the real world. Being a millionaire, you couldn't begin to understand the problem the average citizen faces. You talk a good talk on your campaign stumps, then head off to one of your 8 homes, possibly in one of your 13 vehicles to practice your debate. Somebody in government needs to staighten out the healthcare system in this country soon. It is pretty sad to realize that you can rent an apartment in certain areas of the country for less money each month then the money you need each month to buy a good health insurance plan. You can still rent a small studio apartment for $450.00 per month in some towns. Yet a good individual health insurance plan purchased on your own or extended from a company plan thru Cobra will cost you about $525.00 per month. This is out of control. And after paying that high premium of $525.00 per month somebody probably will tell you that you are not covered for cetain health care expenses because they are pre-existing conditions. This is wrong. If you need medical care and you are paying monthly premiums for health insurance then you should not have to worry about pre- existing condition clauses. We need to abandon pre existing clauses immediately. Outlaw that right away.

Mrs. Texas Teacher!   October 4th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

Where is Obama lieing?

Right from McCain's website….

Families will be able to choose the insurance provider that suits them best and the money would be sent directly to the insurance provider. Those obtaining innovative insurance that costs less than the credit can deposit the remainder in expanded Health Savings Accounts.

What I want to know is, what if you already have insurance? I've got health insurance from my employer. Will the company's contribution be taxed as income that I will have to pay?

Nightingale–you are delusional. Where on earth do you come up with trash like Obama having a "secret police force?" It is foolish, paranoid, unbalanced people like you who frighten me. And the "values" you claim are in jeopardy are nothing but the ramblings of an unstable mind.

McCain is toast   October 4th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

Let me see if I get the GOP talking points straight, because all this spinning is hard to follow. Everything that happened in the first Bush term was Bill Clinton's fault. Everything that happened in the second Bush term is the Democrat Congresses fault. Anything that happens good in the future was set up by the Bush Administration and just took a fewyears to kick in and everything bad in the future – including what's going on right now is a product of the failed obama Administration.

Let me know if I've covered every angle because I'd hate for Republicans to take any responsibility for anything at all or – worst of all – admit a mistake. And if I've missed anything just get me your personal saviour Bill O'Reilly's number and he can set me straight.

Bob   October 4th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

McCain's health care plan is organized in a way to create hardship for employers who pay for employee plans. This then forces everyone into the insurance arena as individuals, instead of groups that get premium discounts, and TRUSTS that the FREE MARKET will take control and lower insurance costs across the board.

Hmm, makes me think. What other recent examples do we have of the free market's benefits? Oh yeah, the mess on Wall Street!

The free market benefit to the majority of people across the middle and lower end of the economic spectrum is a myth just like trickle down economics. Total socialization is not the answer either, but rather the answer lies somewhere in the middle.

Vivian   October 4th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

For all of the angry Republicans tired of paying taxes to support the poor. Google "Welfare Costs".

An income of $50,000 =6,247 in taxes. Of that $647 goes towards "welfare programs", which includes a variety of things.

You want to complain? Fine. But do your homework so that you know what you are talking about.

It's good to see some straight to the point ad's coming out of the Obama camp. Now how is his camp going to be able to afford any sort of healthcare reform after the 850 billion pork barrel bailout is fully enacted. The uninsured sick will just get sicker and die, the underinsured will continue their way to bankruptcy and poverty. The CEO's will be fine though, and will probably keep their health insurance too!

I'm an Obama supporter, and I'd love to see him address this issue at the next debate. There are a lot of us wondering how after all of this is he going to afford it. Ending the war in Iraq just isn't enough.

St. Paul Mom   October 4th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

The McCain health plan worries me. Because it gets rid of the tax break that businesses get if they offer health insurance, they will stop offering it. It would end up with a lot of people being booted off the health insurance they now have and having to find their own insurance – if they can afford it.

Susan from Scotts Valley, CA   October 4th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

Obama is our only hope to bring change to the status quo of Republican trickle down your on your own policies. He WILL protect our country and our values. McCain is going to drive us to ruin.

AA   October 4th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

Here's a challenge to any GOP…

Tell us what McCain is going to do about health care. Please be specific.

Tell us what McCain is going to do about getting out of Iraq (I refuse to call it a war because it is not, it is a police operation). Please be specific.

Tell us what McCain is going to do about the economy.
Please be specific.

Obama has ALL of his specifics made available to anyone who wants to know, it is on his site.

McCain does not. Do you know why? Because he does not have any plans at all. All he continues to repeat is that I'm going to create jobs, win the war, and give you 5000 a year for health care.

So please, someone, either private in a town hall or in the media, please ask him to explain A SINGLE DETAIL.

You know be accountable.

Peace.

Why do so many people believe it's the Governments responsibility to feed, clothe and house you, provide medical care for you, transport you, give you spening money, etc.? What ever happened to working hard, saving for items you want such as a house, not spending more then you make, and taking care of your own self and your family? McCain's health plan is stupid, Obama's is even stupider!

Mike Dallas   October 4th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

I lost my job and continued my COBRA payment from the old employer's GROUP plan and that was 427,00 a month.

Right at the 5.000 McCrypt is offering, unfortunately on the open market that McCrypt is advocating I would have paid close to 800 a month.

Plus McMoron wants to tax the employers side of the contributions as income tax to the employee!

Not just more of the same, but WORSE than the same!

BJGT   October 4th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

If I understand it correctly, you would be taxed on the EMPLOYER'S contribution, which in most cases is probably 80% or more of the total premium. So take your share, multiply by 4 and there you go.

Plus, they will probably remove the reg that allows you to pay with PRE-TAX dollars.

PLUS – This is a tax CREDIT, which means it doesn't even kick in until you file your tax return.

They're not going to send you a $5K "coupon". You're stuck with all the increased taxes or the cost of your non-group premium.

Now, if they'd let people buy into the plan that Congress has, with no pre-existing condition exclusions, it might be a good deal.

Knowing the rabid religious right, is in control of the Republican party and believes in the written word, I will attempt to conclude with a biblical metaphor about evolution..

Obama the community organizer, walks into the Garden of Evil and snatches the apples away from Adam and Eve and all their children. This prevents the garden that we love from being driven into the dust from whence it came. Meanwhile the Republicans continue to drill the party deeper and deeper into the mud. Finally the Republican party’s evolution is complete and emerges as the Reptilian party.

It could not happen to a more deserving group of reptiles.

is the McCain/Palin ticket going to add the $125K to my income and TAX it as income. What percentage would that be and how would I ever be able to afford that since I am retired and on a fixed pension?

Please let us know more details.

VR from Pennsylvania   October 4th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

McCain's plan would give people back more money than they are getting now. His plan would give money to buy the insurance to cover the actual healthcare costs. It would create free market competition between companies wanting to provide insurance coverage to you. The last thing we need is more crappy run government programs and the fraud that goes along with them. McCain’s plan has been analyzed by “the tax policy center”, “journal of health affairs”, and “top healthcare economists” they show that under McCain's plan more people would have healthcare coverage than do now. Obama is trying to prey on people’s fears, don’t be fooled.

Caring and Graceful American   October 4th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

McRich with his 13 cars and 9 houses, how much does he know about the struggling people, HE HAS NEVER BEEN THERE. McRich and Palie quit while you have dignit. :Go Obama America needs you badly.

As a type 1 (juvenile) diabetic, I am most concerned with the part of the McCain health plan that does not guarantee coverage for people with pre-existing conditions. Anyone with high blood pressure, or heart conditions, or diabetes, or a number of other conditions in their medical history, will find it next to impossible to get coverage. Is this what America wants? I doubt it.

JC   October 4th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Honolulu   October 4th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

So let me see if I get this.

McCain will give you a $5000 tax credit so you can "buy" your own health insurance. But he knows that it costs way more than that and Americans will have to pay that expense out of their own pockets.

Thanks, but no thanks McCain.

Obama/Biden '08.

Lifelong Republican for Obama, Columbia, TN   October 4th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

I like this ad and believe that it is true. McCain's healthcare plan will do nothing to bring down the number of uninsured and I firmly believe it will make matters much worse. Americans are already spending over 1 trillion dollars in healthcare expenditures alone. McCain's plan to tax health benefits will drive more hard-working Americans into the realm of the uninsured which will deepen the healthcare crisis in this nation.

Remy   October 4th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

Why cannot the presidential candidates consider the health care system of Canada where every one has access to medical care with a health card? You dont need 100 or 200 dollars in your pocket to see your doctor!

Rebpublicans only take care of themselves. They don't want unions, and they don't believe in helping people in need of help. They figure you better get yours on your own. More astonishing is the people in this country who actually believe that mccain will change the way things are run in washington!!

The "Straight-talk" express is filled with lies, and George Bush policies. Gov Palin's debate points were taken directly from George Bush speechs. (check out Keith Olberman-Fri. Oct 3) She may be able to fool some of the people some of the time and most of the people part of the time but she can't fool all of the people all of the time.

Oh Nightingale, relax. Secret Police Force? Come on. If anyone was to have a secret police it would be Bush and his cronies (McCain). Not protect our country? Every foreign policy ideal Obama has mentioned has come true. He has been darn near clairvoyant and that shows a fierce intellect and sound judgment. Whose values? Yours? What if they infringe on someone else's values? Your values are just that – YOURS! Don't try to impose YOUR values on MINE.

I support this comment: 'John McCain is committed to stay the course with George Bush's economic plans and despite all his campaign slogans he still tows the trickle down economic line.

John and Sarah will do whatever they can to get elected and be able to extend the tax breaks for the wealthy while shielding the rich from paying their "fair share".

The "Straight Talk" express has been side tracked and the "Wild Lie Express" has taken its place in the McCain camp. John is seeing his last chance go down the drain with his misguided economic theory's and now, he will compromise his value system to get to the top and that is so sad!'

McCain has no idea what is going on. He acts like a poorly-programmed robot. Ask him to repeat what he just said (read from his cards), and he will not be able to do so. He does not care about your health plan, economy or anything. He is just a power-thirsty and blood-thirsty man who wants to become president at any price. ‘Country first?’ – give me a break! He and his drug-addict ex-mistress are and always will be first in his mind. Ask him to give at least 5 of his many homes to homeless and 5 of his many cars to drivers who lost everything as a result of Bush/McCain policies. He is a manipulative, stubborn, intellectually-challenged, and emotionally unstable man. He hates his opponents and will become a dictator if elected (God forbid).

Sarah Palin and why she is in this race for president. Think back to George Bush and how he began as governor of Texas. Keith is close but he still doesn't get it. His show was on to it when he was show Bush clips from 2000 and Sarah's debate clips from Thursday.

Tell America to listen up this is serious. Sarah Palin is the female Bush. She has been trained in GOPAC. She is the neocons next puppet to take control of the United States. SHe is no accident. She has been in Alaska for a reason. Some history, remember when the neocons take a baseball team owner and turned him into the governor of texas. This is the same that they are doing with Sarah Palin. That is why she works with Bush advisors. McCain is in great danger these neocons have a plan. I dont see him making much longer. He doesn't know what's happening to him. That is why she is so confident. It comes from the plans that the neocons have for her.

I cannot believe the gullible people who believe all the hyperbole. We will be lucky if we don't see a tax increase, no matter who wins. Health Care can be done – if you want it. You make choices between military spending in other countries or not; spending on middle east oil or not; spending on Chinese goods; etc. Why Americans prefer to spend so much taxpayer money on other countries just baffles me.

John, Toronto

former gop   October 4th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

Again, McCain is blindingly out of touch if he thinks 5 grand would cover even half a year of quality health insurance.

And the idiots out there who want to vote for him, are the same ones who probably can't afford health insurance. Even though I know Obama's is our next president, I'm dumbfounded by how MANY stupid Americans there are.

I fell for Bush and his folksy good-ol'-boy act… I WON'T BE FOOLED AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The $ 5,000.00 is to pay for insurance premiums, is $ 5000.00 more than you get now?.Are you insured now by your employer? Are you paying for your own plan? Are you uninsured? Are you a Socialist Democrat? What are you willing to pay for?Nothing? Are you still mooching off your mommy and daddy, and would now like to mooch off the government?Do you think the Wall Street bailout was BIG?You haven't seen NOTHING yet, wait a while,if Obama and the Dems get their way on health care ,there's never going to be enough money to bail that black hole out.I'm worried, the country can not afford all cost of the bailouts and greedy Democrats.

There are pros and cons to both healthcare plans. No perfect solution will be found until the pill makers cut their profit and give the people a break. Both Obama and Mccain should stop beating up on each other over this…….the healthcare problem is too big and too serious to play politics with.

But, I won't vote for Robin Hood or socialism.
Besides, in my book he's talking the talk but not walking the walk.
Compared to earnings…….look how little money the Obamas gave to charity compared to the other 3. Hat off to Palin on this.

i understand that Obama says he will NOT cut any of his proposed programs. He will spend, and spend big. That he is on a different route than McCain. Wow!

The students had better do their homework about obama before voting him into the highest office.

John Johnson   October 4th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Obama's campaign is missing the mark. During the VP debate, Sarah Palin made a big issue out of Biden looking back too much. In other words, "ignore how things got so terrible, and trust us when we say we won't make the same mistakes again." This is what Obama should be hammering McCain on. We have to look back because that view provides a window into the other candidate's judgment. And, after all is said and done, judgment and intelligence are all that really matters in this job. Issues and external factors are in a constant state of change, so what you're really voting for is the candidate's ability to think the impact of his decisions through BEFORE he makes them. The world is a high-stakes chess game, and McCain/Palin are only good at playing checkers.

Kris In Atlanta   October 4th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Americans can finally get an idea of the type of vision McCain has for the country: More failed Bush economics. The rich get super-richer, and the poor try to figure out how to get the utility bill paid and find a way to scrape up the $100 it takes to fill up the gas tank. That is the reform John McCain and Sarah Palin represent. Speaking of the latter, why won't she just cooperate with the legislative probe? Choosing to circumvent the legal inquiry only makes her look as if she has something to hide. Smells like the last 8 years of the Bush White House: Cover ups galore.

Obama/Biden 08

Bush and his republican party are not the only one's to blame for the condition of America, those who support him and those who are votinfg for McCain are equally to blame. I just wonder when they will take their responsibility in voting carelessly. These same people would cry fowell if McCain is elected and the economy worsens! You McCain supporters heard him say he knows nothing about the economy, and his running mate knows even less. So if McCain wins just expect the worse, and take full responsibility for the crisis, that will surely come!

It is critical that Senator Obama continues to do these informative ads more than the negative ads to separate himself from Senator McCain. Taxing citizens for health care credit is inhuman and immoral. Senator McCain does not have a health insurance plan and continues to misrepresent Senator Obama's plans stating he wants to hand the health care to the Federal Government. It is disingenous that Senator McCain who receives socialized health care actually condemns his own privileges without wanting to share or give it up. Senator Obama is not handing health care to the Feds. He proposes an expansion of options so that people can have a choice of the same health care plan that the Senators enjoy. If people want to continue with privatized health care, then thats ok with the Obama plan too. In the latter case he said he will work with insurance companies then to decrease premiums. I dont think thats a bad thing and certainly not worse than a 5000 dollar credit on which individuals are taxed.

More astonishing is the people in this country who actually believe that mccain will change the way things are run in washington!!

McCain's plan to tax the employers share of healthcare will backfire on him. Considering that employers generally pick up 2/3's of the costs, many people are going to be left with NO healthcare. His plan doesn't even sound good on paper. People pay the healthcare costs up front and THEN get some money back when the file their taxes? In case John has forgotten, MOST people don't have enough money to get by now. I'm starting to think he is sabotaging his own campaign.

Edwin from Va   October 4th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

OK how is this a lie. We get a 5,000$ tax credit. My healt plan at work cost 14,000$ per year. I am out 9,000$.. McCain is is the lier in this case.

Kathy   October 4th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

This is a great opening for Obama, with more than 47 million people without health care and with costs sky-rocketing, this is a huge concern for many Americans including myself, and what McCain is offering is similar to a coupon, by providing a $5,000 tax credit to families which will go straight to the insurance companies, and he also wants to eliminate the tax break for companies who provide health care to their employees to pay for his coupon, and that means that less companies will provide health care. The problem with the health care system is not only the cost but also the health insurance companies who profit off the sick while the sick aren't getting the care they need.

j   October 4th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

I'm ready to vote already. All that's going to happen for the next month is negative campaigning – more so from McCain than Obama because he's behind in the polls but if they're just going to throw out misleading information, then I'm going to get discouraged with the whole political system. Why can't they just give us the facts without the spin and distortion – let us decide?

Nightingale you must work for someone in the Republican party. This is a bad plan and everyone knows it. The $5k will go to the shareholders and bonuses and they will tell us the cost of insurance was lowered because of it. Maybe lower it by $1,500 and that is it. Manhandler, you know this is the worst plan one can come up with. It is better to keep the status quo as is and not change it with this BS.

Jan in CA   October 4th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

Obama will have a better chance of getting a good Health Care plan than any previous President because our economy requires it and he will try to make it a priority. McCain's plan won't cover us. Right now businesses help pay some of the costs for families Healthcare Insurance. Under McCain's plan we will get less than half of what it costs per year in a credit and companies will stop having to help pay because if they don't they will be taxed. McCain does not get it!! We can't afford his old ideas.

I am a Breast Cancer surviver of one year and health plan is very important to me. I have great health benefits with my employer and don't won't them to be taxes becasue it will make my employer look to cut the good plan we have to selecte a cheapter plan with little coverages. With Obama plan it don't come after the onces that have coverage from their employer instead it will help those without any all together. McCain plan is not for the poor. $5,000 will do nothing becasue my Chemo treatment cost over 5,000 a treatment and with my plan coveraged it all. Don't fix nothing that is not broken. Please fix the health plan for the many that don't having any and leave the ones that have good onces with their employer along. What Health plan can you get for $5,000 a very cheap one with littler coverage and leave out the ones like me with pre-condions to fin for themself.

Larry, Hazleton, Pa   October 4th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

Since both Mr McCain and I are retired military and we recieve our health care through the government how is that not a government ran program? Further, what about childrens programs and Medicare are these not government programs? It is clearly a shock to me that he can say the things about health care that he says without a bolt of lightning hitting him the behind.

bigmike31313   October 4th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

McCain says that he always puts country first. In this important case, that is simply not true. Can we now admit the obvious? Sarah Palin is utterly unqualified to be vice president. She is a feisty, charismatic politician who has done some good things in Alaska. But she has never spent a day thinking about any important national or international issue, and this is a hell of a time to start. The next administration is going to face a set of challenges unlike any in recent memory. There is an ongoing military operation in Iraq that still costs $10 billion a month, a war against the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan that is not going well and is not easily fixed. Iran, Russia and Venezuela present tough strategic challenges.

Ugly Coyote   October 4th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

McCain has the "experience". As a matter of fact he has too much experience in screwing things up. He is too trigger happy to have things done his way and his way only. His judgement is fading and so is his respect. Let's retire Mr. McCain from Washington so he can focus on his own health senile issues. Maybe he can count the cactus here in Arizona because he hasn't anything else for our state.

sandee in Portland   October 4th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

Palin: Critized Obama's "plan to mandate health care coverage and have universal government run program" for health care, and added" I don't think it's going to be real pleasing for Americans to consider health care being taken over by the Feds".

Fact: Obama's plan does not provide for universal coverage, only madates insurance for children and doesn't turn the system over to the government. Most people would still get private insurance through their jobs. Obama proposes that the government subsidize the cost of health coverage for millions who have trouble affording it and he's set up an exchange to negotiate prices and benefits with private insurers.

What a difference between the two plans. McCain's plan of a $5,000 tax credit wouldn't make a drop in the bucket and then to turn around and tax the portion of the health care our employer pays for us is beyond digusting.

bigmike31313   October 4th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

McCain reaffirmed for the umpteenth time that the “fundamentals of our economy are strong.”

josh   October 4th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

Great ads Obama, because the Mccain camp is starting to go very negative big-time,they have already got ads up talking about Rev Wright in Penn,Ohio, and Florida, also Fox news is starting to go negative on Obama, all this morning Fox news was talking about Ayers, and tommorow Sean Hannity will be doing a very negative piece on Obama,so Obama have to punch back because the Republicans are acting very desperate!!

B. Hawkins   October 4th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Tucker like McCain has no creditability. Mccain is in trouble and getting desperate. Expect to see the most vile and slimy campaign ever. With 1 month to go McCain is losing in the following states that Bush won in 2004: Iowa,Colorado,New Mexico,Florida,North Carolina,Virgina,Ohio, and Nevada according to RealClear Politics.com. Also according to the same source Obama leads in the Electorial College vote 353-185.

bigbubba   October 4th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Unfortunately, I don't believe John McCain's health would last in arguably the highest stress job on the planet. And what would we have then. Palin as President.

Can't you see her on a trip to England representing the USA. Meeting the royal family. "Hi, my name is Sarah." Rushing up to shake the Queen's hand. "Can I call you Liz? We got so much in common, you betcha. I can see Russia from my state and you can see Europe from your country. This is Todd. He's the First Dude"

I could see the entire world just jumping to get on our side

Shannon   October 4th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

there have been a lot of fact checking segments on MSNBC, and Obama is getting a lot of barely trues on his ads. I thought he was for a new kind of politics. Just more do as I say, not as I do crap from the obama side. What a complete empty suit.

Shame on us.

bigmike31313   October 4th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

It’s just too bad that the only Americans apparently qualified to advise John McCain on how to deal with the world are those hopelessly corrupted by hundreds of thousands of dollars in recent payments from foreign countries, such as beleaguered Georgia. Good thing that guys like Randy Scheunemann (at right, with McCain), whose two-man lobbying firm took in a cool million from Georgia since 2004, have a superhuman ability to separate their analysis from any financial considerations.

bill, alabama   October 4th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

It's a truthful, legitimate campaign ad that tells the truth. Even people who have employer paid health insurance are going to have to pay via taxes for that benefit.

Maybe that will give them some empathy with people who do not have health insurance, nor can they afford the premiums to purchase it.

It's not a free ride for anyone any more …… even the employer covered plans, so they might look at McCain's idea with a new perspective.

Mark, Ohio   October 4th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

In the US one only seems to get to victory with negative attacks.

At least the Obama people are not as dishonest as McCain!

Deb, Allentown,PA   October 4th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

It is critical for the health and well-being of all of us that McCain and Palin are not elected.

While both tickets have told untruths, McCain and Palin lie without compunction. I'm concerned that there is no accountability for these lies. We are fast descending into a country where our elections will not be determined by who will best represent our interests, but who can tell the best lies. Our founding fathers must be rolling over in their graves.

John Smith   October 4th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

The health care system is broken and $5,000 isn't going to fix it.

manhandler   October 4th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

This is a moot argument. Ther's no money for Obamas' health plan and there won't be for many years to come. When they were asked which of their programs they would be willing to abandon due to the economic meltdown, neither of them came up with a direct answer. I think Obama might have said he would fund some of them by cutting waste elsewhere. Where have we heard all of that beofre? Every election, so far. Have you seen it happen? No. Better figure out a way to cover yourself 'cuz the Government ain't gonna do it.

John McCain is committed to stay the course with George Bush's economic plans and despite all his campaign slogans he still tows the trickle down economic line.

John and Sarah will do whatever they can to get elected and be able to extend the tax breaks for the wealthy while shielding the rich from paying their "fair share".

The "Straight Talk" express has been side tracked and the "Wild Lie Express" has taken its place in the McCain camp. John is seeing his last chance go down the drain with his misguided economic theory's and now, he will compromise his value system to get to the top and that is so sad!
