New Obama ad hits McCain again on health care, taxes

Sen. Obama's new ad targets Sen. McCain's proposal for changing the tax treatment of health care benefits.

Sen. Obama's new ad targets Sen. McCain's proposal for changing the tax treatment of health care benefits.

(CNN) – The Obama campaign is releasing a new television ad that targets Sen. John McCain’s tax proposals relating to health care benefits.

“One Word,” a 30-second spot, focuses on McCain’s proposal to tax health care benefits that are currently not taxed. The McCain proposal would tax “your health care for the first time ever,” the announcer says. “It’s a multi-trillion dollar tax hike. The largest middle class tax increase in history,” the ad also says.

The new ad, which will begin to air nationally on Monday, was released on the same day that Sen. Barack Obama is set to give a speech focused on health care and taxes.

At a midday rally in Newport News, Virginia Saturday, Obama will call McCain’s health care tax proposal “an old Washington bait and switch” and “a shell game,” according to prepared remarks provided by the Obama campaign. “He gives you a tax credit with one hand – but raises your taxes with the other,” Obama will also say, referring to the fact that the tax credit included in McCain’s proposal will be paid to a taxpayer’s health insurance provider instead of to the taxpayer.

In a sign of how important issues economic issues like taxes and government spending have become to voters, the McCain campaign has already responded to Sen. Obama’s prepared remarks. Obama “is lying to voters,” McCain-Palin spokesman Tucker Bounds said in a statement released by the McCain campaign Saturday morning. “It’s a bald-faced lie because John McCain will improve the tax code so that middle class paychecks aren’t used to pay government bureaucrats but instead will pay for the access to health care Americans deserve,” Bounds added.

On Friday, both campaigns released new television ads that also spotlighted tax issues.

Script, "One Word," 30 seconds:

Obama voice-over: "I’m Barack Obama and I approve this message."

Announcer: "On health care, John McCain promises a tax credit.

But here’s what he won’t tell you:

McCain would impose a new tax on health benefits, taxing your health care for the first time ever.

It’s a multi-trillion dollar tax hike. The largest middle-class tax increase in history.

You won’t find one word about it on his website.

But the McCain tax could cost your family thousands.

Can you afford it?"

Anyone saying there is no money to fund the programs in the budget just shows the mentality of American's who don't realize that you CAN cut things OUT of the budget to use the money more wisely.

Actually, the trillions in new debt is the largest tax increase in history. We'll have to pay for it eventually. Ever had to deal with a pathological liar who accuses you of lying? I have and it's an impossible situation.

I am a proud member of the military and has been for the past 20 years and no way ready to retire yet. One of the most important benefit that I have as a full time member of the military is my health benefit. It is sad that some of us in America, the greatest nation in the world does not and cannot afford health insurance. This has got to stop. I believe that Sen(s) Obama and Biden are right for this job.

I would impress upon everyone to go see the movie "W" on the 17th and get a glimpse of what we have in the White House and what we will have again if you elect McCain and Palin. Yes that means you America that voted for Bush the first two times.....go look and see what you did to this country and what you can keep doing to us!

I support this comment: 'John McCain is committed to stay the course with George Bush's economic plans and despite all his campaign slogans he still tows the trickle down economic line.

John and Sarah will do whatever they can to get elected and be able to extend the tax breaks for the wealthy while shielding the rich from paying their "fair share".

The "Straight Talk" express has been side tracked and the "Wild Lie Express" has taken its place in the McCain camp. John is seeing his last chance go down the drain with his misguided economic theory's and now, he will compromise his value system to get to the top and that is so sad!'

Oh Nightingale, relax. Secret Police Force? Come on. If anyone was to have a secret police it would be Bush and his cronies (McCain). Not protect our country? Every foreign policy ideal Obama has mentioned has come true. He has been darn near clairvoyant and that shows a fierce intellect and sound judgment. Whose values? Yours? What if they infringe on someone else's values? Your values are just that – YOURS! Don't try to impose YOUR values on MINE.

The "Straight-talk" express is filled with lies, and George Bush policies. Gov Palin's debate points were taken directly from George Bush speechs. (check out Keith Olberman-Fri. Oct 3) She may be able to fool some of the people some of the time and most of the people part of the time but she can't fool all of the people all of the time.

It is just beyond me how john mccain can look at american people in the eye with a straight face and pledge to continue bush's health care, bush's economy, and bush's foreign policy disasters and ask to be elected president of this country. More astonishing is the people in this country who actually believe that mccain will change the way things are run in washington!!

Is it true or not that McLame's proposal includes a tax on our healthcare benefits? It is true. End of story. As for you Nightingale, pay attention. The world wonders if Obama is up to the job? I don't think so. The world can't wait for Obama to be elected, and for the current regime to be given the bum's rush!

Where is John McCain prepping for his campaign? Is that an elementary school? He has an awful lot to learn.

Rebpublicans only take care of themselves. They don't want unions, and they don't believe in helping people in need of help. They figure you better get yours on your own. But for some odd reason people keep voting them into office, WHY! They are masterminds when it comes to deceiving the people of the USA. And every election the people are stupid enough to believe them. They will never help us. Bush has totally screwed this county up and McCain certainly isn't smart enough to fix it and neither is VP pick she's about as dumb as a box of rocks. Go Obama/Biden.

Why cannot the presidential candidates consider the health care system of Canada where every one has access to medical care with a health card? You dont need 100 or 200 dollars in your pocket to see your doctor!

I like this ad and believe that it is true. McCain's healthcare plan will do nothing to bring down the number of uninsured and I firmly believe it will make matters much worse. Americans are already spending over 1 trillion dollars in healthcare expenditures alone. McCain's plan to tax health benefits will drive more hard-working Americans into the realm of the uninsured which will deepen the healthcare crisis in this nation.

So let me see if I get this.

McCain will give you a $5000 tax credit so you can "buy" your own health insurance. But he knows that it costs way more than that and Americans will have to pay that expense out of their own pockets.

    Thanks, but no thanks McCain.

Why don't you people pay attention! Obama will raise taxes to pay for health care also! Hillary tried to hammer that home but no one wanted to listen. You just kept drinking the cool-ade!
Obama is the worst thing that could happen to this country. He wants to give more and more to the lazy bums who think the government should support them. Go and get a job you bunch bums!

As a type 1 (juvenile) diabetic, I am most concerned with the part of the McCain health plan that does not guarantee coverage for people with pre-existing conditions. Anyone with high blood pressure, or heart conditions, or diabetes, or a number of other conditions in their medical history, will find it next to impossible to get coverage. Is this what America wants? I doubt it.
