New Obama ad hits McCain again on health care, taxes

Sen. Obama's new ad targets Sen. McCain's proposal for changing the tax treatment of health care benefits.

Sen. Obama's new ad targets Sen. McCain's proposal for changing the tax treatment of health care benefits.

(CNN) – The Obama campaign is releasing a new television ad that targets Sen. John McCain’s tax proposals relating to health care benefits.

“One Word,” a 30-second spot, focuses on McCain’s proposal to tax health care benefits that are currently not taxed. The McCain proposal would tax “your health care for the first time ever,” the announcer says. “It’s a multi-trillion dollar tax hike. The largest middle class tax increase in history,” the ad also says.

The new ad, which will begin to air nationally on Monday, was released on the same day that Sen. Barack Obama is set to give a speech focused on health care and taxes.

At a midday rally in Newport News, Virginia Saturday, Obama will call McCain’s health care tax proposal “an old Washington bait and switch” and “a shell game,” according to prepared remarks provided by the Obama campaign. “He gives you a tax credit with one hand – but raises your taxes with the other,” Obama will also say, referring to the fact that the tax credit included in McCain’s proposal will be paid to a taxpayer’s health insurance provider instead of to the taxpayer.

In a sign of how important issues economic issues like taxes and government spending have become to voters, the McCain campaign has already responded to Sen. Obama’s prepared remarks. Obama “is lying to voters,” McCain-Palin spokesman Tucker Bounds said in a statement released by the McCain campaign Saturday morning. “It’s a bald-faced lie because John McCain will improve the tax code so that middle class paychecks aren’t used to pay government bureaucrats but instead will pay for the access to health care Americans deserve,” Bounds added.

On Friday, both campaigns released new television ads that also spotlighted tax issues.

Script, "One Word," 30 seconds:

Obama voice-over: "I’m Barack Obama and I approve this message."

Announcer: "On health care, John McCain promises a tax credit.

But here’s what he won’t tell you:

McCain would impose a new tax on health benefits, taxing your health care for the first time ever.

It’s a multi-trillion dollar tax hike. The largest middle-class tax increase in history.

You won’t find one word about it on his website.

But the McCain tax could cost your family thousands.

Can you afford it?"

What a shame on McRich and Palie, they are disgracing the country and their republican party. McRich and Palie will continue to LIE to themselves and the fellow Americans. Palie is an expert on fabricating so she can be in power and abuse it, she couldn't even answer simple questions that my children learned in grade school and had left an impact on their knowledge the founder of our liberty we call THE CONSTITUTION. McRich with his 13 cars and 9 houses, how much does he know about the struggling people, HE HAS NEVER BEEN THERE. McRich and Palie quit while you have dignit. :Go Obama America needs you badly.

McCain's plan would give people back more money than they are getting now. His plan would give money to buy the insurance to cover the actual healthcare costs. It would create free market competition between companies wanting to provide insurance coverage to you. The last thing we need is more crappy run government programs and the fraud that goes along with them. McCain’s plan has been analyzed by “the tax policy center”, “journal of health affairs”, and “top healthcare economists” they show that under McCain's plan more people would have healthcare coverage than do now. Obama is trying to prey on people’s fears, don’t be fooled.

Let me see if I understand this proposed income tax on health benefits. If I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield health benefits and I get very sick in 2008 and a hospital charges me $125,000.00 for services, doctors, medicines, testing, open heart surgeries & treatments, etc.
is the McCain/Palin ticket going to add the $125K to my income and TAX it as income. What percentage would that be and how would I ever be able to afford that since I am retired and on a fixed pension?

Please let us know more details.

I love the bailout idea, but I would have liked Main Street America to get something. After all, it's going to cost us a bundle. Thanks Republican party for the mess you're leaving. Good luck Senator Obama in cleaning it up when you get in the White House. Thanks to all of you who have been hellbent on keeping the Republicans in the White House these last 8 years. We appreciate the mess you voted for. I think that every registered Republican should be personally billed for this mess.

Knowing the rabid religious right, is in control of the Republican party and believes in the written word, I will attempt to conclude with a biblical metaphor about evolution..

Obama the community organizer, walks into the Garden of Evil and snatches the apples away from Adam and Eve and all their children. This prevents the garden that we love from being driven into the dust from whence it came. Meanwhile the Republicans continue to drill the party deeper and deeper into the mud. Finally the Republican party’s evolution is complete and emerges as the Reptilian party.

It could not happen to a more deserving group of reptiles.

If I understand it correctly, you would be taxed on the EMPLOYER'S contribution, which in most cases is probably 80% or more of the total premium. So take your share, multiply by 4 and there you go.

Plus, they will probably remove the reg that allows you to pay with PRE-TAX dollars.

PLUS – This is a tax CREDIT, which means it doesn't even kick in until you file your tax return.

They're not going to send you a $5K "coupon". You're stuck with all the increased taxes or the cost of your non-group premium.

Now, if they'd let people buy into the plan that Congress has, with no pre-existing condition exclusions, it might be a good deal.

I lost my job and continued my COBRA payment from the old employer's GROUP plan and that was 427,00 a month.

Right at the 5.000 McCrypt is offering, unfortunately on the open market that McCrypt is advocating I would have paid close to 800 a month.

Plus McMoron wants to tax the employers side of the contributions as income tax to the employee!

Not just more of the same, but WORSE than the same!

Why do so many people believe it's the Governments responsibility to feed, clothe and house you, provide medical care for you, transport you, give you spening money, etc.? What ever happened to working hard, saving for items you want such as a house, not spending more then you make, and taking care of your own self and your family? McCain's health plan is stupid, Obama's is even stupider!
