Obama accuses McCain of looking for distractions

Sen. Obama slammed Sen. McCain's health care plan at a campaign event in North Carolina Sunday.
Sen. Obama slammed Sen. McCain's health care plan at a campaign event in North Carolina Sunday.

(CNN) - Sen. Barack Obama on Sunday charged that Sen. John McCain's campaign is launching "Swift boat-style attacks" on him instead of addressing the country's problems.

Watch: Obama fights back

"Sen. McCain and his operatives are gambling that they can distract you with smears rather than talk to you about substance. They'd rather try to tear our campaign down than lift this country up," Obama said at an event in Asheville, North Carolina.

"That's what you do when you're out of touch, out of ideas, and running out of time," he said.

The comments come a day after Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, McCain's running mate, claimed that Obama associated "with terrorists who targeted our own country."

The McCain campaign shot back on Sunday, saying its accusations are "true facts," and not "smears."

"The last four weeks of this election will be about whether the American people are willing to turn our economy and national security over to Barack Obama, a man with little record, questionable judgment, and ties to radical figures like unrepentant domestic terrorist William Ayers," McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said in a statement.

I would rather vote for President Obama who has the integrity, foresight and tempemant and the steady hands to turn this country around domestically and internationally.

There is no way McSame is able to handle this country with his erractic, insensitive to the American people, lack of judgement, ambition and tempermant behavior.

The GOP tactics are so cheap and mean.

Now they don't have policies and issues to run on, therefore they are desperate to coming up issues that are wrong and irrelevant.

WHAT ABOUT SARAH PALIN'S HUSBAND – HE WAS THE MEMBER OF THE PARTY THAT WANTED ALASKA BE SEPARATED FROM USA. HE IS A TRAITOR.

The McCain campaign is starting to reek of desperation. First, the selection of Palin, though inspired, reveals a "gotcha" mentality rather than sound judgment. The description of the pair as "mavericks" is apt if you think of a maverick as "reckless" and "doing my own thing" with the emphasis on the my. Now, instead of coming up with viable domestic and foreign policies, the McCain campaign is simply trying to pull the wool over everybody's eyes, pointing at Obama as faulty without even offering anything of substance on their side of the fence. The McCain campaign is doing more and more to convince me that Barack Obama is the man with the temperament, the judgment, and the experience for a job that requires him to be smarter, more competent, and more of a big-picture-guy than Joe "Six-pack," Hockey moms, and all those pit bulls out there.

McCain's campaign is coming undone, it started out foul so it was bound to end, foul.
It started with his pick for VP (Palin) someone that is very much so unqualified but was suppose to lure women votes.
It then went to political stunts (distractions) seemingly postponing his campaign. Covering up Palin's ignorance of foreign and economic policies. Blaming the media for exposing Palin's ignorance.
I'm confused about McCains affiliation to the republican party. He has ran with Bush for maby years and now distances himself and campaign from him.
Now turning to dirty tactics and lies, trying to get the attention from the economy and smear Obama.
Are they looking at the fact checks, because it's a fact those terrorists accusations are lies.
McCain needs to hope Obama doesn't retaliate with true smear about Palin.

Tucker Bounds and Sarah Palin are puking cowards, as is McCain if he has the audacity to repeat this garbage. And they wonder why they're plummeting in the polls all across the country.

Obama, stay focus like you have in the past. Don't allow the corruption of McCain/Palin side track you in any way. I think the American public will sort it out and vote for the right ticket.. But, keep in mind you have to continuing responding to those false reports, and correct them. Most of the people in this country, and around the world are looking forward to your leadership. The world is looking for this country to lead again. I would also like to say, thanks for picking a very smart , caring VP like Joe Biden. His heart is in the right place. I hope his mother-in-law gets well.

I think Gov Palin has lost her credibility, and no one is going to listen to the smears and last ditch efforts of the Rep campaign, to bring down Sen. Obama. McSame lost his credibility with his erratic behavior in the last two wks relative to the new economic legislation. When I look at Palin, my mind goes back to those idiotic remarks she made about "Putin rearing his head" and the others made during the Couric interviews.

I do not want to pay taxes on my healthcare coverage. I like the current pre tax payments that I make now.

McCain does not understand the economy and he does not understand what it would do to our paychecks to be charged taxes on our healthcare coverage.

I will not be able to look America in the eye if the country chooses a president based on these ridiculous scare tactics. Palin is narrow-minded unworldly, and comes across like a mean and nasty school girl who suddenly thinks she's cool to be part of the in-girl crowd at school. She has no substance. God forbid she ends up president.

McCain is turning the "smears" over to his side-kick!

Let's see McCain ANSWER why he is resorting to these "dirty political moves".

BRING ON TUESDAY'S DEBATE..........OUR ECONOMY should be the main topic,......of which, McCain knows little.

Something to think about: If McCain chose someone as unqualified as Sarah Palin, (she doesn't think evolution is true!) who could become the president if something happened to McCain, who might he choose for Supreme Court judge!!!

    Thanks!--Maya Radoczy

Someone needs to put Tucker Bounds into submission. Obama is absolutely right...the only thing McCain can do is throw out muddy curveballs because he has nothing else going for him.

Bush did the exact thing 4 years ago....please tell me the American people learned their lesson.

The Bill Ayers SMEAR has been DEBUNKED by every news media. McCain/Palin have sold their soul to the devil to win this election.

McCain camp should be very careful about the "so-called facts." Because there is plenty of real facts that can be exposed by Obama's surrogates.

McCain: Keating 5, Rick Davis getting paid by Freddie Mac up until a month ago, John Hagee, Pastor Rod Parsley, and HIS CONSTANT LIES!!!

Palin: Todd Palin's membership to Alaska Independence Party, Troopergate investigation, witchcraft; misuse of power; earmark queen and HER CONSTANT LIES!!!

McCain/Palin: Cheated on their spouse, laughing when someone called on of their opponents a b%#ch

    SHALL WE GO ON!!!

McCain knows this is it, his career is really over. Americans outwitted him. To pick someone like Sarah Palin who needs to be hidden somewhere in Alaska because she's a joke.

I hope the jokes don't stop, even when McCain loses. Dan Quayle was a joke, and after he left the office of the Vice Presidency, he remained a joke.

Then let's have the full panoply of "true facts." Such as McCain's involvement with Charles Keating and his own improper influence peddling. Such as McCain's involvement with convicted criminal G. Gordon Liddy. Such as McCain's lifestyle, which is thanks to his convicted felon of a father-in-law, who had established ties to organized crime. Such as Todd Palin's long term membership in the Alaska Independence Party, which only ceased when his wife launched her first political campaign.
