The Obama camp is highlighting McCain's ties to Charles Keating.

(CNN) — After months of avoiding references to the decades-old “Keating Five” scandal that nearly derailed John McCain’s political career, Barack Obama’s campaign is highlighting the Republican presidential nominee’s ties to Charles Keating, an Arizona businessman who went to prison during the aftermath of the savings and loan crisis of the 1980s.

The campaign is releasing a new 13-minute “documentary” about the scandal, and sending a message to supporters that ties McCain to the federal bailout that followed.

A preview of the new Web video, "Keating Economics: John McCain and the Making of a Financial Crisis," shows clips of McCain's hearings before the Senate Ethics Committee two decades ago, as the narrator says "the Keating Five involved all the things that have brought the modern crisis” and that McCain "has not learned the lessons and has continued to follow policies that are going to produce a disaster."

Watch: 'Keating 5′ dogs McCain

McCain was one of five senators, dubbed the "Keating Five," who met with regulators on behalf of Charles Keating, the owner of Lincoln Savings and Loan.

Listen: McCain aides fight back over Keating on a campaign conference call

In a message to supporters Sunday, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe tied McCain to the lack of oversight that led to the savings and loan crisis of that era, and the massive federal bailout package that resulted. "During the savings and loan crisis of the late '80s and early '90s, McCain's political favors and aggressive support for deregulation put him at the center of the fall of Lincoln Savings and Loan," Plouffe writes. "More than 23,000 investors lost their savings. Overall, the savings and loan crisis required the federal government to bail out the savings of hundreds of thousands of families and ultimately cost American taxpayers $124 billion."

The Obama campaign had largely avoided mentioning the disgraced Arizona financier for most of the year. After an Obama backer referenced the Keating Five scandal this spring, the campaign appeared to distance itself from the comment — but Obama signaled it might be fair game later in the year: "I was just asked previously about a whole host of associations that are a lot more flimsy than John McCain’s relationship to Keating Five," he told reporters.

Two weeks ago, as controversy over deregulation and financial oversight began to dominate the public consciousness and the McCain campaign started to step up its attacks over Obama’s associations with controversial Chicago figures, Obama spokesman Bill Burton raised the issue for the first time since May. The McCain camp had accused the New York Times of supporting Obama's presidential bid; Burton responded by sending reporters a list of investigative stories the paper had run about the Illinois senator, complaining that McCain’s relationship with Keating had not come up for similar scrutiny over the course of the campaign.

The Senate Ethics Committee investigated and cleared McCain in 1991, but said that he showed poor judgment in his efforts for Keating, who had been a major contributor to his campaign. McCain later turned over $112,000 in campaign contributions from Keating to the U.S. Treasury.
The documentary will be released online at noon.

The move comes two days after Gov. Sarah Palin accused Obama of "palling around with terrorists who target their own country" because he was supported by Bill Ayers, a founding member of the Weather Underground.

Responding to the new attacks over McCain’s history with Keating, the GOP nominee’s spokesman Brian Rogers raised those links again.

"John McCain has been open and honest about the Keating matter, and even the Democratic special counsel in charge recommended that Senator McCain be completely exonerated,” said Rogers. “By contrast, Barack Obama has been fundamentally dishonest about his friendship and work with the unrepentant terrorist William Ayers, whose radical group bombed the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol. Nor has Barack Obama come clean on his close friendship with Tony Rezko, a felon convicted on bribery charges who subsidized the purchase of Barack Obama's home. It's obvious that Barack Obama is frantically attacking because he knows that most voters find these kinds of friendships, and the failed judgment they expose, to be unacceptable for our next president."

it's funny how the McCain campaign is trying to wiggle out of the same dirt they're throwing out.
The fact is, relationship with Ayres is really a non issue unless you suggest that Obama's judgment is flawed for having any form of contact with Ayres.. I find that stupid, but let's use the same standard to McCain.
Applying that standard to McCain, you can prove that McCain's judgment is even more flawed for accepting favors from Keating, and also not having the judgment to discern between good and bad actions.

I say McCain's judgment is downright dangerous

Don't try to picka nd choose your details lady. Your old man and the lipstick Fido are going nowhere in November. They can smear and distort all they want. Since they have no new ideas of their own to provide, it's the typical Rovian/Atwater plan… It worked before (on McCain in 80) but not this time. Too many people now know the 8 years of agony the current idiot in chief has subjected us to, and JM/Fido are just going to continue them

McCain was young when this occurred…….. we need to stop looking at the past and look to solutions for the future…… what matters is that Obama went the house of a person that was 1970's terrorist (but never convicted) in the mid 90's.

McCain's Own Radical Ties….
G.Gordon Liddy -
McCain served on boards with him, considers him a 'friend'

landed Liddy a four-year jail sentence.

But Liddy's career of inflammatory statements and actions exceed his Watergate actions.

Liddy, advising Branch Davidians how to defend themselves from ATF agents during a radio show:

"If the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms insists upon a firefight, give them a firefight. Just remember, they're wearing flak jackets and you're better off shooting for the head."

Liddy, on the impact Adolf Hitler had on him as a child:

When he listened to Hitler on the radio, it "made me feel a strength inside I had never known before," he explains. "Hitler's sheer animal confidence and power of will [entranced me]. He sent an electric current through my body."

Watch Out McCain – You have a few more skelatons that can be exposed!

Ken in Dallas   October 6th, 2008 10:29 am ET

Rogers neglected to mention that the ethical review of the Keating Five scandal concluded that McCain had exercised "remarkably poor judgment," or that Keating provided the core funding for McCain's original campaign for Congress. None of these things are central issues, however.

The real point at issue in this election is that the Republican party's experiment with the resurrection of laissez-faire economics has failed in very much the same way as the 19th century laissez-faire period ended, in rampant corruption and economic collapse. "Supply-side," or "trickle-down" economic theory, which the Republican party has enshrined as party doctrine, has been exposed as nothing more than a rebranding of laissez-faire, and the current state of the economy stands as proof that the rebranding of laissez-faire isn't enough to make it workable.

The Republican party is committed to an economic doctrine that is guaranteed to lead to bankruptcy. It has never been more clear that a vote for the Republican ticket is a vote against the interests of American citizens.

It is interesting how anything is game when the attacks come from Sen. McCain. Quite a double standard. I hope the American people are not fooled by his desire to portray himself as the "perfect one". The last few days development seems to me that it is "McCain first" and not "Country first" – all this talk of turning the page and going on attack mode makes it clear that our interest as Americans is not high priority for the McCain campaign.

We need to elect the person who has our best interest at heart & not their own. Someone who will seek to change our lot going forward.

Roofin Reality, Houston, Tx.   October 6th, 2008 10:28 am ET

To "my dear friend" Deidre from 9:13,
Obama has tried to play this thing the way he laid out in the beginning – above the fray and simply on the issues.

But, when McCain who laid his map down of "run an honorable campaign that will not get down into the mud of personal politics", what do you expect his opponent to do?

Put another way, I don't want to bomb anyone. But if the US is attacked, do you expect anyone to say "well, I committed to not bombing so we'll talk some more?" Of course not.

Which is why McCain attacked Obama for saying he'd go after Al Qaeda interests in Pakistan IF Pakistan itself didn't go after them.

Look, Obama is trying to play nice, and he can since he's got theupper hand on all issues. McCain on the other hand is dealing from a deficit position and has to throw all kinds of stuff to try to get back in the game. Obama simply isn't going to be the "nice guy" and let him do that without any opposition. Which, when we talk to Iran and North Korea, I'm sure they'll get that same msg. We'll talk, but those talks are expected to be fruitful in your actions. If not…

Tom   October 6th, 2008 10:27 am ET

Difference between this and McCain's attacks? This stuff is true, and there is plenty more regarding McCain. Obama has stayed as positive as possible, but McCain has now gone fully into the gutter and Obama will bring out the negatives to counter him–but he will do it factually. Take a lesson, McCain!

It is good to remind voters that McCain is the worst kind of scoundrel there ever was that ran for political office. On May 10, 2008 The Times reported, Robert Malley advisor to Obama was "sacked" after the press found out he was having regular contacts with "Hamas", which controls Gaza and is connected with Iran. This past week, buried in the back part of the papers, Iraqi newspapers reported that during Obama's visit to Iraq , he asked their leaders to do nothing about the war until after he is elected, and he will "Take care of things".

Around 1979 Obama started college at Occidental in California . He is very open about his two years at Occidental, he tried all kinds of drugs and was wasting his time but, even though he had a brilliant mind, did not apply himself to his studies. "Barry" (that was the name he used all his life) during this time had two roommates, Muhammad Hasan Chandoo and Wahid Hamid, both from Pakistan . During the summer of 1981, after his second year in college, he made a "round the world" trip. Stopping to see his mother in Indonesia , next Hyderabad in India , three weeks in Karachi, Pakistan where he stayed with his roommate's family, then off to Africa to visit his father's family. My question – Where did he get the money for this trip? Nether I, nor any one of my children would have had money for a trip like this when they where in college. When he came back he started school at Columbia University in New York . It is at this time he wants everyone to call him Barack – not Barry. Do you know what the tuition is at Columbia ? It's not cheap! to say the least. Where did he get money for tuition? Student Loans? Maybe. After Columbia , he went to Chicago to work as a Community Organizer for $12,000. a year. Why Chicago ? Why not New York ? He was already living in New York .

Put that together with Sarah Palin's current ethics investigation in Alaska that she suddenly refuses to cooperate with and has hired lawyers to try to block it. It's about time they point out how much Senator McCain was in cahoots on this. His words today are pretty and inviting, but his past actions speak far louder than those words; John McCain has favored deregulation for decades and is part of the reason our financial markets and economy are in the melt-down phase. I question if he should even be a Senator anylonger…much less President.

Ron   October 6th, 2008 10:20 am ET

Glad to see the Keating investigation finally being aired. While Senator McCain may not have broken the law, it was clear that he showed poor leadership and failed to take the moral high road. This example of a lack of leadership is exactly why we shouldn't be electing him as our leader.

As for the Bill Ayers ordeal, I would hate to be tied to a man I knew when I was 8 years old. Bill ideas were wrong but a court cleared him of the charges and he has been an active community supporter and recognized college professor since then.

This needs to be highlighted and brought to the table. He should be asked about it during the Presidential debates. At the very minimum, he owes an explanation to the American people. Why does McCain become outraged when this issue is brought up??
McCains receiving disability income also needs to be brought up. To be eligible for disability income, one must be nearly permanently disabled and unable to work. McCain needs to return every penny of disability income he has ever received in his life.

But this wouldn't have come out if he hadn't started trying to label everyone as un-american who doesn't vote for him

It's about time Americans see the reason why John McCain has avoided the financial crisis and used Palin to smear Obama, he didn't want people to know about his involvement with the Keating 5 but Arizonians will never forget. Now investigate McCain's involvement with Silver Bank of Arizona where his son was CEO and left 2 months prior to it's calaspe in August '08 and investors lost millions; John McCain was in Arizona every weekend during this time. FACT.

Paul   October 6th, 2008 10:19 am ET

Exactly…and McCain has the guts to try to question Obama's judgement…

Crik in OH   October 6th, 2008 10:19 am ET

That's right. Fight fire with fire.

The republicans take it to the low road and even though you might want to take the high road, it does not lead to the white house any longer. It didn't work for Kerry or Gore.

Give it right back to them Obama!

the mcain campain , is really pathetic!!!!!!!!!! no one cares about this kind of garbage.. and he shouldnt even want to walk this treadmill.. considering his ties with the keating five!!!!!!!!!! i want to hear about how i'm going to be able to have affordable healthcare.. and my taxes not be raised.. anyone who falls for this trick.. needs to vot for the sorry mcain.. campaign… they are desprate.. they have nothing else to go on but old stories.. and we wont even go there about sarah palin.. past…..

atlantan   October 6th, 2008 10:18 am ET

About time. People want to hear about the economy, not about this kind of stuff, but if the GOP is going to sling the mud, Obama needs to fight back.

Obama got some support from someone who did terrible things 40 years ago – things which Obama has said he does not in any way approve of or support.

Keating 5 is something John McCain himself did – not somebody who supported his campaign. Keating 5 is all about John McCain supporting deregulation, which led to the collapse of a business, which had to be bailed out by the federal government. Sound familiar?

As for Palin, she is trashing Obama for something a supporter of his did, while she and her hubby are refusing to answer subpoenas. Hello??? Where I come from, that lands you in JAIL.

I will take someone with questionable supporters over two people who are themselves questionable!!!

Dale   October 6th, 2008 10:18 am ET

McCain says he was exhonorated of all charges.

But we all know he was guilty.

michael   October 6th, 2008 10:18 am ET

McCain you lost all the honor you had in my book..you may have served your country honorably then but you are not serving it honorably now. You have not honored yourself in thid campaign..you have disgraced yourself.

SUNSHINE   October 6th, 2008 10:18 am ET

I personally like to "nice" Obama, but sometimes youhave to deal with smear tatics. Its about the principle. But that fact that Obama is talking about real issues, and using real eveidence not just snippets and excerpt and disecting them negatively that makes me proud.

Johnson in St. Louis   October 6th, 2008 10:18 am ET

I thought the Republicans were going to start looking forward and not back. Well so far everything they have said is from Senator Obama's past and refuse to focus on the present. I don't blame one bit for the Obama campaign to bring this up, only I hope they use truthful things and don't go the low road as the GOP has done and use false or distorted claims.

P.   October 6th, 2008 10:18 am ET

Wow, the McCain camp is getting pathetic… They're rehashing things that are old news. The Obama camp has to respond equivalently with accusations, or else run the risk of appearing weak. It's too bad that John McCain is forcing BOTH parties to take the low road.

Kendra   October 6th, 2008 10:18 am ET

Good for Obama! Remember John, mud slings BOTH ways! And with GW in office it's been raining! Hate to see them go negitive but we can not afford another swiftboated president.

Glenn; North Carolina   October 6th, 2008 10:18 am ET

After all the mud that has been slung at Sen. Obama about Rev. Wright, Tony Resko, and everything else including questioning his heritage all I can say is this:

It's about time he gave a little of what he's been taking for all of these months! I just wonder how long it will be before Sen. McCain comes out with a poor pitiful Ex-POW commercial. Sen. McCain's matra seems to be when you can't attack, play on the sympathies of the people. That's how I want my leadership to act! Let's ignore the issues and go after the individual. That's just sad.

nancy   October 6th, 2008 10:17 am ET

if mccain wants to turn this campaign dirty so be it. if he and palin can dish it out…you better be able to take it too. shame on them for running a immature, sleezy and lying campaign. cant handle the issues that americans care about…turn to sleeze. this will only backfire more for mccain and the polls will get worse. the very thought of palin in the white house if something happens to mccain is the deal breaker for most of us. very scary.

Bruce   October 6th, 2008 10:17 am ET

NOW is the PERFECT TIME to point out McCain has a history of being involved in Bank DeREGULATION. His hands are dirty with the GREED of the banking industry. As President he would once againg give the RICH more and let the poor get porrer.

AFTER ALL HIS LIES NO ONE CAN TRUST HIM. IF YOU CAN'T TRHUST A MAN YOU CAN NOT VOTE FOR HIM

Obama is a man with a plan. A Visoin for the future. He knows the road will be hard but knows Americans can over come the hardships brought upon them by BUSH.

Obama should of also put in the ad that Palin is currently under investigation in her state for miss using her powers as Governor along with the McCain Keating 5 information. If the McCain camp wants to run sleezy ads then they should expect to receive the same treatment back.

All I can say is this: FINALLY.

After the McCain camp's slander over Obama's ties (or rather lack thereof) with Ayers, they deserve to have their candidate put on the spot. Unlike the OBAMA-IS-A-TERRORIST smears, the Keating Five scandal is a matter of public record—as in, there are facts (wow!).

Everything she says is downloaded in her tiny little brain.. Dumb and Dumber are the candidates on the Republican ticket..

It looks like all the McCain camp has left are bogus arguments and historically inaccurate allegations that have been out for months and years. All this stuff was around during the primary process and the electorate in charge of choosing the party nominees voted state by state to have Obama carry their message to the White House. It looks like Sean Hannity-type operatives are now in charge of the campaign and message — and the sliver of undecided's, independent's and moderates who have yet to commit have a choice of buying it or not!

CNN, I hope that you guys do your jobs & show this ad over & over again just like you have subjected us to Sarah Failin's lunatic attacks all day yesterday & today. They want to attack Barack for someone he was on a board with that committed an act when he was 8, but John McCain was directly involved in this corruption scandal. This is huge because it is the exact same thing that we just went through with the Wall Street attack.
John McCain needs to tell Miss Moosebreath to shut her trap because now it's on. She has too many skeletons in her closet to be throwing bs bombs.

Check Mate!

Dutch-VA   October 6th, 2008 10:08 am ET

Yes!! Take the gloves off Sen. Obama. If they want to run a smear campaign based on lies, we can run a smear campaign based on the truth. I've been waiting for you to call him out on this. Let's talk about why Sen. McLame really left his first wife. McLame has so much dirt, he is so easy to expose.

OBAMA/BIDEN 08

Finally, we see some flexing of the muscle. Go Obama! Don't let them "swift boat" you.

Barbara Chicago, IL   October 6th, 2008 10:07 am ET

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Candy West Virginia   October 6th, 2008 10:07 am ET

Way to strike back Obama. If Obama runs this country like he has brilliantly run his campaign this country will be great again! But you forgot troopergate, AIP, DEREGULATION, Witch Palin to name a few.
mccain/palin = pathological liars!

Mr Rogers,
It is the McCain campaign who has begun this mud slinging. There is no responsibility you won't shirk, no truth you will not distort, no lie you will not tell to achieve your goal of POWER.
You and your ilk are THROUGH. Deal with it.

Michael   October 6th, 2008 10:06 am ET

Two Democrats went to jail. 'Nuff said.

tulsa   October 6th, 2008 10:04 am ET

a response to the previous post;

dear "truly American",
You are the very worst kind of citizen. It would be good for all of us to remember that the last refuge of a scoundrel is patriotism.
Just saying you are "truly american" is an insult to the millions of us who really ARE.
I have a hard time believing anyone who wraps themselves in the flag to insult someone else.

Ony   October 6th, 2008 10:04 am ET

Finally!

Give it to him Obama! An eye for an eye!

Frankly I think he's waited too long to give McCain a taste of his own medicine.

hollerbode   October 6th, 2008 10:02 am ET

Two can play the game!
