Obama says McCain is avoiding discussing the economy.

(CNN) – Barack Obama said Monday that John McCain is intentionally trying to avoid talking about the economic crisis because it would hurt the Republican nominee’s presidential campaign.

As the stock market dropped even more on Monday afternoon and affected markets around the world, Obama criticized McCain for playing politics over talking about his plan to fix the economy.

“I have got news for the McCain campaign, the American people are losing right now,” Obama told reporters in Asheville, North Carolina. “They are losing their jobs, they are losing their healthcare, they are losing their homes, they are losing their savings, I cannot image anything more important to talk about than the economic crisis.”

Obama encouraged Congress to work on a second economic stimulus package that would provide direct relief from high gas and food prices and said Henry Paulson and Ben Bernanke need to move quickly to restore confidence in the economy.

Obama said the next steps are to work to improve the housing market and to extend unemployment insurance.

The Democratic nominee said both candidates need to address their plans for the economy during the debate in Nashville on Tuesday night.

“The notion that we would want to brush that aside and engage in the usual political shenanigans and smear tactics that have come characterize too many political campaigns, I think is not what the American people are looking for,” Obama said.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE PRESIDENT OBAMA
Do not stoop to that other fellow tactics, continue to rise above him and be the gentleman he is not.
If he is worried about Erles tell him to go to the Univ of Chicago and inquire why they allow him to be a board member,he can use any distraction he choose to,please make him stick to the issues.
How can we continue to make our mortage payment, our 401K, and how we can finance our children college education.
We can't afford $300,000.00 outfits, matter of fact we can't afford $3,000.00 outfits.
If he is concerns about our economy ask him to tell his wife to sell some those outfits she prance around in and help the homless that his adminstation put there.
NO MORE MUD SLINGING McSHAME

arlene, CA   October 6th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

Of coarse McCain does not want to talk about the economy he has nothing effective to say, instead he will spend the rest of his time campaigning by negative attacks to try & destroy Obama, because that is who McCain is & that is what he does. McCain comes across to me as a liar, and someone not to trust. He is not the honorable man he claims to be,(keating 5, google it) he acts like he does not know what he is doing, he darts off in all directions, making exact opposite decisions every day.Obama handled the"bailout" very calmly & very Presidential. McCain is angry & frustrated & really doesn't know what he's doing. I am ready for the Change We Need. Obama /Biden 08-12

forget the economy…I think McCain is forgetting that the "fundamentals are strong"….this guy is so out of touch its not funny.

John   October 6th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

I used to be leaning for McCain, but with this mudslinging coming out of his Campaign instead of fixes for the Economy, I am not voting for him anymore.

Annie, Atlanta   October 6th, 2008 7:03 pm ET

You know, I'm getting sick (SICK!!) of the John and Sarah traveling circus that his campaign is turning into. They are out there making a mockery of our political process specifically, and this land that is my Country in general, and it has to stop. This dredging up of old news Ayers and Wright, along with their continuous lies, and blaming everything that is wrong on Barack Obama is the worst gutter politics I've ever seen. ENOUGH, John and Sarah, ENOUGH!

Keite, Fort Worth, TX   October 6th, 2008 7:02 pm ET

Barack Obama is the only presidential candidate in this race who recognizes the importance of addressing the housing crisis from the bottom up. With McCain, every policy initiative happens at the top with hopes of the benefits trickling down.

We all have seen how badly that works…

Obama/Biden '08

Linda   October 6th, 2008 7:01 pm ET

I challenge all Americans to e-mail CNN and insist that our two presidential candidates debate on the issues that are important to all Americans at Tuesday Presidetial Debate. We don't want to sit and hear them debate about attacks on each others characters and listen to McCain use his scare tactics now that his numbers are going down in the polls. Stop this nonsense and lets get down to the real issues our country is facing.
We wnat to know how they are going to help us with this economic crisis, the high cost of gas, fuel, and food. We want to know about our healthcare plans, taxes, and which President has the better plan to help the average American people.
So I say to everyone, insist to both our candidates that we want to hear a debate on the issues our Country is facing and how they are going to help fix this crisis we are in, and they should not even be allowed to discuss anything else!

Lisa P   October 6th, 2008 7:00 pm ET

Obama is starting to sound downright Presidential (putting your country first instead of trying to get in yet another weak jab at your opponent — what a concept!). Hope this keeps up :-)

Sad that the only thing McCain and Palin can do now is try to figure out how to lie their way out of loosing this election. So far it hasn't worked. But then, thats how they have ran this whole campaign… I use to have great respect for McCain but now, he has changed from the great senator he use to be to a GREAT BIG LIER… SHAME ON YOU JOHN. I NOW KNOW YOU FOR WHAT YOU MUST HAVE ALWAYS BEEN.

Amy   October 6th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Of course John McCain is ready to turn the page on the economy-he's not hurting like the rest of us!

His wife wore a $300,000 outfit at the convention! He wears $500 shoes. He owns at least 7 homes, one with 14 bedrooms! He drives a fleet of cars! His wife owns a jet!

It's because McCain is so out of touch with the average American that he doesn't care about the crisis at hand.

Well, we do.

Gary's Comment is:

Mc Cain & Palin have no where else to go except to the gutter, and get
down and get dirty, its called "DESPERATION", everyone in the the
Obama group needs to just stay on message and not get into thegutter with them, take the high road, and be Presidential, we need
to get our pride back in America, these are dark days and alot of the
people of this great country are hurting, people like me have no time
for school yard pranks and gotcha games, its a turn off.

In a speech today. McBush faulted Obama for a delay of the Bail out.
True, and thank God Obama delayed these crooks. The original Bail Out Bill had no safe guards and was a blank check for crooked Republicans like McBush to Bail out their Criminal Corporate Pals who have destroyed our economy.

repugs are desperate and nervous about the idea of a black president. I just saw a clip of a florida sheriff refer to Obama as Barack Hussein Obama , when introducing Palin at a Florida rally. The repugs claim to be the party of moral values and religious faith, but it as become the party of bigots and ignorance. The repugs prey on division and hatred in the name of patriotism.

I pray nobody tries to harm Obama due to lies perputuated by the likes of Sean Hannity, Linbaugh, foxnews and the McCain campaign.

Let's see: it's good that Palin is an outsider from politics, then it's good that she has political experience. Then it's bad that Obama is an outsider with very little political experience. Then he is connected with evil terrorists from the 60s…. I'm getting confused…. McCain has always been an insider…. what is good, what is bad…. I'm getting a head ache!

Thank goodness, we only have a month to go. All I know is that I don't want four more years of the Same Old Bush policies that got us into this mess! Golly gee! and Darn it!

The Keating 5 scandle is not mud slinging. It is a fact. It is also pertainate to our current financial criisis as McSame is a well known advocate of deregulation and has major deregulation lobbists, like Davis and Gram advising his campaign. Mud slinging would be bringing up Cindi's treft of narcotics from her chariy due to her addiction. And as far as patroitism goes, Palin has given a presentation at her Husbands Separitist group that wants to cede from the US-as in treason!

Ex-Republican — wow, dude/dudette, maybe decaf next time?

I'm more sad than I am angry about the turn of events with McCain. At one point in time he really was the maverick that he likes to talk about on the campaign trail. If he had been that person again, it would have been a very different race to this point in terms of the level of discourse. This could have been a model campaign to hold up as an example of how two men can disagree with each other but not feel the need to discredit each other. Instead, we're getting a model election of how desperation can alter life-long held tenets of acceptable behavior.

Tomorrow's debate should be interesting…

McCain-Palin are now desperate and panic. They will turn to anything they can find to attack Obama, even though they are old news and Obama had been clear. Does any idiot believe in this time and age, some terrorists are still on the loose that Obama can pal around with? If they are not in jail, they should sue Palin for discrediting their good name. Palin thinks she can do anything the ways she did in Alaska without any check and balance. Go back to Alaska to be the Dictator that your citizens so love. Palin is THE terrorist for wanting to secede from the USA then came running for Vice to destroy this nation!

Winnie in Montana   October 6th, 2008 6:44 pm ET

McCain will do whatever he can to deflect attention from his own failings. He is 72 years old, not particularly well-educated, a life-long politician, an adulterer, friend to scoundrels domestic and foreign, married to a woman who stole from her own charity, filthy rich and unconcerned with regular Americans. In addition, he chose a right-wing nut-job for a running mate. Did I mention the nut-job isn't very smart or well-educated, either?

He cannot properly discuss the economy because he's still catching up to the present! Just weeks ago, he thought the economy was "sound".

Kate Fergus   October 6th, 2008 6:44 pm ET

McCain is so desperate he is willing to shift the focus off the economy of which is knows nothing about, to mud slinging. All the garbage he is dredging up is old news.

Let's talk about the Keating 5; Troopergate; Palin's witch hunter reverend; McCain's philandering past; proven lies throughout the campaign, etc. etc. etc. If he wants to fight dirty, he and Palin better be prepared to answer some questions about their own characters or lack of them.

While I don't like swift boating, I do feel that Obama shouldn't take McCain and Palin's character attacks without fighting back. I do know, Obama will continue to focus on the ecomony. He is an intelligent, reflective, and thoughtful man which is who is needed given the complexities that are in being faced today. McCain doesn't understand these.

Remember it was McCain that said the "fundamentals of the economy are sound" two/three weeks ago?!!!!

the economy is hurting because of the war, spending money on exports that could be made here. rising price of oil because of war, and OPEC doesn't like the president because of their idealogies. Bush did protect the country at least give him that. but money now that is a different story, and it was the same with his father. America always needed balance but the rich are getting excessive. I strongly object to — and request an investigation by — the FCC of CNN's internet communications practices.

As you know, CNN makes available internet articles and then posts these on "tickers" that allow readers to comment. I strongly object to the following practices of CNN vis-a-vis- these tickers.

Any pro-Obama comment (regardless how vile) is posted repeatedly by the same individual — and this individual is allowed to post on any and all subsequent tickers.

Conversely, any anti-Obama comment is rarely — if ever — posted. If it IS posted on one ticker — and if the same individual attempts to post another comment — the first comment is immediately removed. Additionally, if this individual attempts to post a comment on a different ticker — NOT only is this comment NOT posted — but the comment on a previous ticker is also immediately eliminated.

Just heard something interesting from Bill Schenider of CNN, 30% of Republicans think that McCain is going to lose.

WOW……..that's a significant number…….. if 30% of Republicans believe that their candidate will lose, then why vote?

Also, that 30% know, what those of us, Republicans, Independents and Democrats voting for OBAMA know………. that's that, McCain IS out-of-touch-erratic-and-mean.

I dreading tomorrow night's debate because I know that McCain will attack, he will be rude and dismissive towards. Sen. Obama.

McCain, I believe is angry, very angry that this brilliant young man who happens to be African-American would come along and steal what is "rightfully" his. Just like Bush stole McCain's thunder in 2000!

When all is said and done, Obama is going down in November because of two issues that won’t go away:

1. Jeremiah Wright
2. Michelle Obama

Since Obama has been “speaking in tongues” the past two years, and since there’s not much else voters REALLY know about Obama – these two issues will stick!

If Obama cared about our economy, he's drop out of the race, Everytime polls go up in his favor, the stock market falls. Figure it out people. The Democrats in Congress are to blame. Tax big and small businesses and jobs will disappear. Oh, I forgot, with Obams, we want need to work, the Government will take care of us. God help America. Has anyone else noticed that CNN limits responses on some Ticker stories? Some stories have no commentary and others allow ten responses or 200 or 54 or 3.

Did you notice that today CNN coverage of McCain's speech was split screen with the Dow Jones board "rising" as McCain spoke?

This is where the new agency of truth in news that covered Operation Desert Storm from inside Iraq has come. What a shame. Where are the journalists who treasure the truth and stand by the facts? As dead as our hope, I suppose.

Agnes Thomas   October 6th, 2008 6:34 pm ET

I do not think McCain should turn the page on the economy for his own political gain, but that is exactly what McShame is doing. McCain is not worried about losing his 7 or 8houses, his money from his heiress wife, his health insurance, etc. John McCain and Sarah Palin remind me of the movie "Dumb and Dumber." Sarah Palin is also under scrutiny about her church affiliation, the witchcraft thing, but I think she is still posessed. But the news media is doing exactly what McShame and Palin want. They have been talking about this stupid stuff all day. WHAT ABOUT THE ECONOMY!!! It's tiring hearing about Rev. Wrong, the Ayers thing, something that happened when Barack was 8 years old. Why is the media wasting time playing this out all day? If John McCain wants to turn the page let him, he is not an intelligent man, but I expect better from the media.

Okay, maybe it's time to chill. For anyone that believes there is one whits' difference in either party,You are dead wrong. We have been sperated as a Nation since the year 2000 with one respite. The majority of America was against the bailout, but this was done "for our own good".Could it be that the 535 demigods have been comprimised by the fringe right,or extreme left? What happened to moderation?I beseech all of you to be civil, and respect each others rights, instead of venting your vitriol and anger.Polite debate always outduels a veil of false rightousness.Good luck.

Sherry   October 6th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

You know folks……..it's a very very sad day in this country when we face all that has happened with this bailout…………now we have to listen to McCain and Palin whine about issues of the past……….Obama is talking about our future, while the 'mavericks' are trying their best to dig up dirt on others……….I find it incredibly pathetic that two grown people consistently act like high school jealous freaks who can't take the truth that they are losing this campaign in a serious way. Isn't it just like a jealous boyfriend/girlfriend to sling the mud when things fall apart??????????? Well, this is exactly what has happened in the McCain/Palin ticket………..they have to face the truth……..they are the weak ones………….Obama/Biden are the strong ones……and miss soccer mom……….I suggest you get your Alaska butt back home and tend to business there………..sounds like you haven't quite found out what being a real Mom entails…….or keeping a family together………and John McCain………you might be better off sitting in one of your seven homes, telling your war stories to your grandchildren…………..you're a glory hound from the word 'go'……….MAVERICKS DO NOT BELONG IN THE WHITE HOUSE………….MAYBE OUT ON THE RANGE………………..

Barney   October 6th, 2008 6:21 pm ET

People, vote early. Then turn off the tv. Don't even listen to any more of the republican lies.

NC can vote early 16 Oct.

Obama gets my vote and the rest of my family.

Lifelong Republican for Obama, Columbia, TN   October 6th, 2008 6:21 pm ET

The economy is the top issue in this election…more so than in any election in recent history! Obama offers a concrete plan to rescue our failing economy, and the only thing that McCain and the extremist Republicans can offer are baseless lies and false attacks!

Americans, please, ignore the lies, fear, and anger that extremist conservatives are trying to distract you with.

Vote smart…vote Obama-Biden in 2008

Do not fall victim to the Rove kitchen sink strategy. These are serious times that demand serious action.

Independent, white woman   October 6th, 2008 6:21 pm ET

Thank you Senator Obama! I cannot believe that at a time like this with te American/global economy on th ebrink of a depression, Mccain wants to change the subject. I care less who Obama happened to be on the same board with and I care less about Mr. Ayers to be honest with you. I care about my pocket book, my future and the country's economy. I am sick and tired of politicians who cannot handle the issues and turn to smear campaigns! Totally sick of it! I want to talk about what the candidates plan to do to get us out of this mess! Plain is running more gegative, how dare she after sounding like an idiot for the past two weeks, just because she got through a well rehearsed debate, it doesn't mean she should be running her mouth full of dirt! Plain, tell me what you will do for our economy other than extend the Bush tax cuts and follow the Bush economic startegies that have not worked!!!!!

josbam   October 6th, 2008 6:20 pm ET

A great lesson of patriotism for the old angry guy ans his ignorant running mate..Yes Obama continue talking about whatreallly interest maericans:the economy and let the angry jalous old guy continue behaving lik a liar

tatanka   October 6th, 2008 6:19 pm ET

McCain has forgotten about everything except how am I going to defame Obama today. I hate to say this but before the election is over McCain will have Obama being the one that crusified Jesus. You just wait and see.

Ed from Wisconisn   October 6th, 2008 6:18 pm ET

Its very simple, when you’re behind in the polls, behind in Electoral College or anythng for that matter what other option does the GOP have? They have no honor for the most part, nor do they offer the country any new concrete ideas about how to fix the economy. The GOP continues to lack substance or any specifics on real issues. MC Bush/Palin still has not answered how their administration will differ from their friend George Bush. They really don’t need too, because the American public knows that you can put lipstick on a pig, and it will remain one.

God Bless America

Barney   October 6th, 2008 6:18 pm ET

McCain intervened to get his wife out of Felony charges in stealing drugs from her charity.

He also intervened in Keating 5. Factcheck:
The Verdict: True. McCain did push to delay regulations that would have cracked down on savings-and-loans practices and intervened on Keating's behalf, although he was cleared of wrongdoing in the "Keating Five" case.

In both instances, his status as senator carried too much weight.

voter   October 6th, 2008 6:18 pm ET

about time we have an adult in this election. Instead of mud slinging as the McCain campaign is doing, lets talk about the economy. Mud slinging is not paying my bills or helping me find a job.

Griff   October 6th, 2008 6:18 pm ET

Barack Obama must be reading my Comments.. The day after… Everytime the day after my comment, he uses my Comments….

Sandy   October 6th, 2008 6:18 pm ET

It's easy to bad mouth somebody, not so easy to talk about how we might fix this mess the current adminstration likely allowed us to get into.
Good job Sen Obama, stay on message. The economy, baby, economy!

Republican Base Voting OBAMA   October 6th, 2008 6:17 pm ET

Great job (President Obama) I want to know what you have to fix this broken economy and do not care about what McCain say's or that nut job from Alaska. Move.On right now John and Sara we need Change Now

Obama/Biden 08/12

Barney   October 6th, 2008 6:16 pm ET

McWarmonger cannot distract us from our goal of having President Barack Hussein Obama !

joe six pack   October 6th, 2008 6:15 pm ET

Memo to John McCain:

Hey Mac, I had to close my savings account because I am out of the job and without health insurance. I may lose my home too

Are you going to blame me, poor old Joe, also for the financial crisis?

California Gold   October 6th, 2008 6:15 pm ET

This weekend the national press covered one suicide over home foreclosure and the other in Ohio a 90-year old woman attempted suicide over foreclosure. McCain wants to "turn the page". No leadership whatsoever. Just ignore the suffering and expect us to vote for him. Listen up McCain: this year it isn't about little issues. It's the economy. Get it?

Rick   October 6th, 2008 6:12 pm ET

Holy cow, the more one looks into Barack Obama's past the more corruption is uncovered. There has never been a more corrupt, lying person to run for office.

Ex-Republican for Obama   October 6th, 2008 6:12 pm ET

Update: Rasmussen Reports as follows:

"Obama now leads by seven points, 52% to 45% in Florida. A week ago the candidates were tied in the Sunshine State. Two weeks ago, McCain was up five."

McCain, your absolute moral bankruptcy looks to have cost you the election. If it turns into a landslide…you should take your sorry but out of our country, because we are ALL beginning to hate you and everything you stand for. You suck as a person, let alone a politician!

biff   October 6th, 2008 6:11 pm ET

I just want the press corp to have a press conference with our vice presidential candidate, Governor Palin.

is that REALLY too much to ask? REALLY??

tulsa   October 6th, 2008 6:09 pm ET

Once again, McCain is all bluster, fear and smear while Obama is upright, serious and in command of what is important to the American people.

Thank you Senator Obama.

Thanks, but no thanks Senator McCain.

michael   October 6th, 2008 6:08 pm ET

McCain is now a sleaze not a hero!!!!

WOULD YOU PUT A CONVICTED CHILD MOLESTOR IN CHARGE OF KNDERGARTEN CHILDREN? THEN WHY CONSIDER PUTTING MR “KEATING 5” IN CHARGE OF THE LARGEST ECONOMY IN THE FREE WORLD? PALIN=TROOPERGATE SO 2 CROOKS ON THE SAME TICKET?   October 6th, 2008 6:08 pm ET

Now, what’s her name has been relegated to the back pages of the political history book, where her only stated merit will that she freed Dan Quayle from the public humiliation he as had to endure. She is officially a bigger bobble head than he is.

The Reptilians should be proud that their campaign has been reduced to an iconic American punch line!

The Reptilians should just privately concede the election and do an honorable last month so they will live to fight another day. MAYBE they can regroup in time for 2012.

Continuing down the road the “Liar’s Express” is now traveling will only bring out the whole Keating 5 etc, and cause the Reptilians to lose any respect from middle America. Reptilians will not only be a laughing stock, but a dishonored laughing stock.

No political clout for decades.

But hey, what do I know.

Old Guy   October 6th, 2008 6:05 pm ET

I have news for John McCain, I have just lost 30% of my life savings in a very diversified 401K account and I'm 64 years old.

John, I don't want to hear about mud slinging crap, I want to know how your going to fix this economy -PERIOD!

KEATINGECONOMICS.COM   October 6th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

I want to know more about McCain's relationship with Charles Keating and how it pertains to today's economic crisis. Please do a fact check CNN. Why was McCain one fifth of The Keating Five?

ohio   October 6th, 2008 6:02 pm ET

Obama knows what his talking about mccian is attacking like a little kid now. Mccain we dont care about your adds we need real solutions

Jack Six Pack   October 6th, 2008 6:02 pm ET

John McCain wants the public to forget that this economic mess is his and Bush's doing with the republican deregulation strategy.

John McCain is such an angry old man he about to start foaming at the mouth spewing out lies at every chance.

I wonder if he's playing to the "values voters" and if so, do you folks appreciate all that lying?

Brian G, Sugar Land, TX   October 6th, 2008 6:01 pm ET

Barack is right. McCain is turned into a whining, simpering, bad mouthing infant. I can not believe that America wants that kind of person at the helm.

Worse still is that snotty moose hunter from up north, who understands little of what goes on ourside of her cloistered environment.

I can hardly wait for election day to vote for Obama and be done with the Republican BS. YUCK!
