McCain ‘undisputed champion’ of the town hall.
McCain ‘undisputed champion’ of the town hall.

(CNN) – Following the hallowed pre-debate tradition, Democrats spent the hours before Tuesday night’s presidential debate praising GOP nominee John McCain.

The Democratic National Committee released a Web video Tuesday afternoon featuring footage of analysts, and McCain himself, highlighting his prowess in and ease with the night’s town hall format.

“Since McCain is the undisputed champion of the town hall, anything less than a game-changing performance tonight would be major disappointment,” said DNC spokesman Damien LaVera.

Earlier in the day, Barack Obama’s campaign looked to set similar high expectations for his opponent. “When it comes to sheer format, we enter today’s debate the decided underdog,” said Obama spokesman Bill Burton in a memo sent to reporters. “John McCain does extremely well in town hall settings. It’s been his favorite format throughout his career and we think that he will of course do very well.”

He also used less-complimentary language the campaign has used to describe McCain, describing the Republican as “erratic” and desperate: “John McCain is running out of time for a game-changing event,” he said.

McCain and Obama are slated to face off in Nashville this evening.

Does destiny mean anything to anybody? If not, it will.

It is Obama's destiny to be President.

A little advice to McCain - you will not win this debate or the election in November if you continue to ignore the "reality" of what is going on in America. You can make the huge mistake of trying to paint the Obama/Biden ticket as something it's not, but in the end that will only hurt you and your "heels on, gloves off" running-mate. America is tired of the negative games Republicans play. Why? Because this election not about you, your running-mate, Biden or Obama. It is about our country and the planet's future. Unfortunately, you and the whole McCain campaign - just don't get it!

McPalin will show nothing but hatred and anger. He will attack with lies and try to make Americans afraid of Obama. Try and listen for one positive point, one example of his ideas, one thing he will do in office and you will not hear it. Only attacks, negative statements and trying to break down the person he is running against. Is this really what we need to turn America around? Really? Be serious and objective and ask if this is the type of man, the type of politics that we really need at this point.

Chi4Obama   October 7th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

So I wonder how many times tonight will McBush use GOP buzzwords like "Dangerous", "Radical", and "inexperienced" when referrring to Barack Obama.

Newsflash to the GOP
Attacking Barack Obama, will not help turn the economy around, lower gas prices,or help us win the war in Iraq.

Penny   October 7th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

Nice job, there, Damien LaVera! Already, you have made comments that go against your candidate's abilities. I think you are seriously underestimating your party's standard-bearer, Barack Obama.

I think that both are going to do fine in this format. However, it will be interesting to see if they can answer tough, direct questions from the audience and from the online audience. If I were there, I'd do simply that. We are crying for direct specifics to very difficult issues that impact America. I hope that both deliver that and not just "spin" talk!

McCain looked so mad in the last debate. Maybe tonight he will finally blow his temper. Although he is sure to have a lot of fans in Tennessee,
I don't think that is going to help him against Obama - clearly the best choice!

ROBERT JUAREZ   October 7th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

I truly believe Mccain is going to win this election, regardless what the polls say. 1. The Electoral College System is being used as the source of the current polls, isn't the Electoral College System to be used only on election date? 2. Mccain person that myself and many other relate and trust. Drive down the road of California and see all the support he has, yet polls say California is for Obama. Those polls don't speak for me and many other that I have spoken to.

Thank you,

As we learned with Palin, it's all about setting the bar. Her bar was low enough that she managed to get over it while still groveling on her belly. The Democrats are trying to ensure that McCain at least has to step over his bar.

Republican Jeff   October 7th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

McCain will implode tonight. High stress, blood pressure, no ideas, only lies and attacks. It will be fun to watch the old man get pissed, say stupid things and hand the election to Obama. McCain put the election in Palin's hands. He has been out of sight, she has resorted to false attacks and this is the plan and objective for someone who wants to be president. Good Luck!

mike   October 7th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

John McCain will go on the attack tonight and that will put the final nail in his coffin. We are sick of bickering and name-calling and that's all McCain has left. He has no idea how to fix the economic crisis (he can't even figure out his stance on the bailout), no end in sight for the war in Iraq, a plan that benefits NO ONE but the insurance companies for health care, he has yet to state a position on the mortgage crisis, all of this and I haven't even mentioned his running mate yet!!

Good-bye John. At least you'll have plenty of nice homes to retire to….and I'm sure Sarah Palin will end up like Kaiser Solzie in The Usual Suspects…"after this, I'm sure you'll never hear from her again"

I am an independent now supporting Obama. The republican ticket has not offer any viable plan different from Bushe's plan. I want to hear McCain tonight. A tie is an Obama win. The guy is smart he can handle it. Sen Obama has being exceptional in these debate which were suppose to be McCain strongest point. I just can't take that old man serious.

Darla (Edmonton, Canada)   October 7th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

He may be considered the undisputable champion when it comes to town hall debates … but most champions try to leave the ring with a big win. McCain doesn't have a chance of winning this election cycle … his "champion" days are over.

david   October 7th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

Maybe Senator McCain will use this opportunity to prove to me that he really cares about my financial situation. I hope that he will make that effort. But, if he chooses to focus on the Bush/McCain War in Iraq or his "Surge", then I really just do not care. We have wasted more than enough lives and treasure in Iraq. And, if Senator McCain uses the debate just to dump more dirt or talk about something that happened 40 years ago, then his message to me is that he does not care about my loss of retirement income or that I may loose my job. I want him to talk about things that really matter. Iraq really does not matter, the past conduct of Obama's supporters does not matter, the Surge does not matter. My financial situation and my grandchildren's future is what matters to me. Obama understands that. I hope McCain will evidence that he also understands and cares.

How can every one not be tired of John McCain and his idea's. He once said Jerry Falwell was an agent of intolerance. John McCain has sold his ideals, his priciples down the river, just to gain power. Absolute power absolutely corrupts, Goerge Bush turned the presidency into absolute power and has not only corruptted himself but John McCain as well for his desire for it.
John McCain has been to far removed from the needs of Americans, the people in poverty, the 43 million without health care, hoiw can a guy like that understand what middle America is going through. I'm not saying he's elitest, I might even like him if he was, I'm saying he's out of touch.

Mark   October 7th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

In their negative deep dive, the McCain-Palin campaign hammered Obama for supposedly saying our troops in Afghanistan are just "air raiding villages and killing civilians."

The Washington Times reports that John McCain himself once said something remarkably similar in 2000, he said because of tactical decisions U.S. troops were put in the position of killing civilians in Kosovo. Further, McCain called the Clinton strategy in Kosovo "obscene" because it forced troops into using tactics that meant civilians were going to get killed. "In the most obscene chapter in recent American history is the conduct of the Kosovo conflict when the president of the United States refused to prepare for ground operations, refused to have air power used effectively because he wanted them flying — he had them flying at 15,000 feet where they killed innocent civilians because they were dropping bombs from such — in high altitude."

Palin said Obama should be "disqualified" for his remark about Afghanistan - she should hold her running mate to the same standard.

McCain has become the type of politician he hated in 2000 (Bush/Rove). If times weren't so serious, it would be comical how much McCain is willing to do to top his daddy by becoming president.

He may do well in town hall meetings but he has no substance that Americans are looking for. Eight is enough.

Sumi, CA   October 7th, 2008 4:58 pm ET

McCain/Palin ticket is spreading too much hate. I am a 36 year old half Japanese and half black. For the first time in my life, I am scared how I will be treated because of my ethnicity. This is a result of watching all of the radical behavior of the McCain/Palin followers. If they win this debate, I do not believe we minorities will be treated fairly as American's. I was raised to respect diversity and differences. Agree to disagree.

McCain/Palin have a responsibility as "professionals" to correct their "follower's" when shouting out racial slurs, hatred and a recommendation to kill someone. This is hate in our face, and nobody is doing anything about it. Honestly, CNN, I AM SCARED FOR ALL MINORITIES AND ESPECIALLY FOR OBAMA..

As the media, you also have a responsibility to correct or address this hatred being demonstrated on your network. Not ALL American's feel this hatred or support this negativity. McCain/Palin are over the top and are horrifically seperating this nation.

Flordia Former Republican for Obama   October 7th, 2008 4:58 pm ET

McShame   October 7th, 2008 4:58 pm ET

Okay, so this is not news CNN. Of course McShame does well in townhalls, because they're people who are fact checking a lot.

I hate McShame's demeanor and I hate the way he looks down on people. All this campaigning stuff is beneath him, he'd like to just pay for the priviledge of being the president and that's it.

His VP or should we call her Minnie Mouse Palin is a joke. So McShame has basically told the American people that he doesnt care about us or America. All he cares about is himself.

Al   October 7th, 2008 4:58 pm ET

No excuses. McCain was so wrong on so many issues (remember his enthusiasm in pushing us into Iraq aggression?), and McCain is so empty and so out of any reasonable program, that Obama MUST win this debate, town hall or not.

Is the the turning point against Obama or the death of McCain?

The republicans are finding out about the October surprise, McCain isn't going to win.

Todd   October 7th, 2008 4:57 pm ET

I was a fervent supported of Hillary R. Clinton, and will always be. To say that I will not vote for Obama, would be a complete indiscretion. I may not necessarily think he was the best for the democrats and the country, but I certainly believe he is the best option of the two for president.

I don't think any setting, town hall or otherwise, will slow Obama's momentum. I think it is either get on board the Obama train, or be found laying on the tracks.

Full STEAM ahead and best of luck to both candidates.

Debbie   October 7th, 2008 4:57 pm ET

So the question is, how many "undecideds" are there STILL, and of those how many will base their vote solely one one debate?

George W. Bush performed pretty dismally in 2004 ("Want some wood?" and "You forgot Poland! Don't forget about Poland") yet it didn't seem to hurt him.

The town hall may be McCain's milieu but Obama can be pretty "folksy". However I think that "folksy" isn't going to cut it. Given what people are worried about "Presidential" is more what they're looking for,.

CLS in VT   October 7th, 2008 4:56 pm ET

I have seen McCain in his town hall meetings. When someone asks him a question that he can't answer and still look good, he changes the subject (ala Pailin). These town halls are filled with McCain supporters. This will not be the case tonight.

NickNas   October 7th, 2008 4:56 pm ET

Of OUCRSE mCcains does well in his town halls
Just like BUSH Hand picked audiences fully screened and juiced up.

ANYONE could look great with a set-up like that.

BUT Like Bush, he will look stupid when the crowd doesn't applaud on cue like he is used to. I remember all of the awkward pauses Bush had with that silly smirk waiting for his canned applause that never came. He got EXTREMELY uncomfortable because of that.

thomas   October 7th, 2008 4:56 pm ET

In his own mind maybe, but compared to Barack Obama his oratory skills are just a meatless stew of innuendos, superlatives, allegations, and deception.

KW   October 7th, 2008 4:56 pm ET

I expect McCain will do well. Despite his antics over the last couple weeks (beginning with selecting Palin) he does seem to have an actual platform that he will present to the nation. I'm hopeful he and Obama will stick to the issues and keep the mud-slinging to a minimum. There are serious issues at state in this country and around the world. We need to know where these men stand on the important topics… not Keating/Ayers.

KJL   October 7th, 2008 4:56 pm ET

In the last debate, McCain kept pausing and looking at the audience as if he was expecting applause, especially when he brought up his "maverick" thing. He looked lost without it.

When I grew up on the prairies a "maverick" was what they called an unbranded, roaming head of beef. Now when I hear the word I think of an old steer (sorry, John) with a cow trailing along behind, hoping to take his place at the head of the line.

Joyce, nj   October 7th, 2008 4:56 pm ET

I won't be surprised if McCain changes his tone and actually becomes 'friendly'. That is if his campaign actually does it's work and research.

But the big problem with that is that other than mud sling, he has nothing new to offer. And would be forced to debate Barrack on issues. He very well knows that if the discussion turns into economy - he is doomed.

No new ideas, his record of deregulation and his injecting politics into the bail out talks simply put him in a really bad corner.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   October 7th, 2008 4:55 pm ET

It's okay for McCain to be the "champion" of town hall meetings. It's the economy that needs a champion and that McCain is not.

james   October 7th, 2008 4:54 pm ET

Neither candidate will actually answer the questions, as usual. They'll shoot off their pre-planned speeches on the general topic of the questions, not their specifics. It's sad that people support these two pure politicians. We really need the media to give some attention to the other candidates. This isn't America anymore if those alternative voices are going to be blocked so obviously by the corporate media.

Yep, the debate is a republican dominated area so imagine the questions that will be fired at the candidates. Tenneesee is as red as it gets. Turning point, don't think so. I think by continuing to claim McCain is "king of town hall" settings, they are setting expectations very high for him. I would venture to say he needs to hit it out of the park tonight in order to maintain any kind of chance, as the new polls show Obama not only gaining ground, but he is now viewed as the better candidate to handle the Iraq war( a subject John McCain held the lead on until today).

Grandpa's OLD Party   October 7th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

He's only champion of the town hall when he's surrounded by rabid supporters. Like dubya, who always made appearances with military backdrops or other like minded folks, McCain can't handle opposition well. And this style will not allow him to stick to stump-style, generic taling points. It's the ONLY reason Palin came out with no further damage — she was not asked follow ups or confronted in any way. McCain runs the risk of stumbling with his speech and using expressions like "HEH? HEH??" like he did when he expressed his pride for Palin's performance. He sounds like a stumbling grandpa. Like Grandpa Simpson. And he can't connect to voters the way Clinton did with the "I feel your pain" line. His wife walked on stage wearing more money than most people's homes were worth before this crisis. When he doesn't even know how many homes he has, and he has 13 cars, he has no idea the pain the rest of us are in. Face it — his time was in 2000. He has Rove to thank to abolishing those hopes. Don't take it out on us. Go home(s) McCain.

Let's see…since Palin's supporters are so proud of the fact that she didn't bumble much in the debate, and therefore 'won' the debate; if Obama can hold his own agains McCain in his stated best format of debate in a town filled with GOP supporters, what will that tell the people? It should show everyone that to be president, you must lead no matter where you are, because you represent everyone - red AND blue.

ROVER   October 7th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Nov 4th can't come sooner. This country is melting in it's own pot! I hope they have an honorable debate tonight. McCain and his constituents are angry! For what reason? I have never in my life seen so much hatred, bitterness, and downright meaness in the "American People". Other countries are looking to us for leadership and strength. Instead of America the Free , this is America the confused, broke and busted. We are all headed for destruction and chaos if we don't clean up our act from both parties. Every single one of us have some faults, but to take it to this level is despicable. Thank you for posting, CNN.

Town Hall isn't going to help him, he lost it when he chose Palin for his running mate…….he lost it when he stopped his campaign and wasnt' going to his debate and if that wasn't bad enough he lost it when he let Palin out on the campaign trail spewing her lies and remarks about Obama Palling around with terrorists……even if McCain did gain any points tonight in the debates, it won't be enough to catch up with Obama…….

Gloria from Nevada   October 7th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Why does John McCain look so hateful and bitter. His demeanor is a turnoff as he appears so phony and out-of-touch. Everything he accuses Senator Obama of, he seems to fit and describes himself. He is also copying Obama on all the lines and issues that seem to be getting voter attention. Who is the real McCain? I think America has had a chance to view him for who he really is over the course of this campaign. He has abused his service to country and POW status to gain public office. He is know for his temperment…I think he is ready to blow…I hope he has a doctor close by.

Kentucky   October 7th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Not today baby……I think at some point McCain will get flummoxed and begin to lose his cool……then it's all over. People are beginning to see the man for what he really is. I believe that he is running on the old "3rd times the charm" theory. Might have worked had he not chosen "mighty mouth" the you betcha, wink, wink queen as his running mate.

OBAMA: Do you wish that you could take back the mudslinging that you have done just because McCain did it? Sticking with the issues and not going negative has been the key to Senator Obama's success. The majority of voters appreciate a candidate who talks about our issues instead of using each and every opportunity to bash the other candidate. Our economy has never in my lifetime been this bad and so the last thing I need to hear from ANY candidate is negative attacks about the other.

The problem with this "town hall" is that it will be watered down, with EVERY question having to be submitted to the moderator BEFORE the debate ever gets started.

So the moderator will only ask those questions that he wants to ask, I am afraid that it will be biased to Obama's favor. It will be more than likely designed so that McCain falls flat.

I am an average American. I also don't think that myself or anyone else "like me" should be president or vice president. I am dying for someone to explain to me why they would want an "average everyday American" to be president or VP. Can someone tell me the answer to this? Do those of you who like certain candidates because they are "like you and me" think that you or I would make a good president or VP?

I want people who are better than me to run this country. Thats what an elitist is. I want a president who thinks he or she is better than I am. If they don;t then I think there is a serious problem. The founders of this great country and writers of the constitution all had at least one thing in common. They were elitists.

McCain may be the undisputed champion of town hall meetings, but that still does not make him more qualified. I attended a town hall meeting put on by McCain and even though he was asked questions, he still never gave a direct answer as to what his actual plans were. We just got the normal rhetorical answers. If Obama will answer the questions straight out with no rhetoric, he will come out ahead. Although at the point, why anyone would vote for a mediocre candidate instead of the one with superior intelligence and judgement is still beyond me.

MCCAIN'S STUNT OF CHOOSING PALIN AND INSULTING ALL AMERICANS, ESPECIALLY WOMEN ACROSS THE COUNTRY, HAS BLOWN UP IN HIS FACE…………..BIG TIME AND RIGHTLY SO.

THE REPUBLICANS HAVE ALWAYS DEPENED ON THE IGNORANCE OF THE VAST MAJORITY OF AMERICANS TO BE EASILY LED, WILLING TO DO AS TOLD WITHOUT QUESTIONING, ETC.

WELL THE COUNTRY IS WAKING UP AND REFUSING TO DRINK THE KOOL-AID ANY LONGER.

WHEN MCCAIN LOSES IN NOVEMBER HE WILL UNDOUBTEDLY BLAME HIS LOSS ON THE ECONOMIC SITUATION, PAINT OBAMA AS A CROOK AND LIAR, AND ANYTHING ELSE HE CAN THINK OF SO AS NOT TO SEE THINGS AS THEY REALLY ARE.

MCCAIN TORPEDOED HIS OWN CAMPAIGN BY:

1. INSULTING THE INTELLIGENCE OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE IN HIS SELCTION OF PALIN FOR VP, ESPECIALLY WOMEN.

2. BY LYING, CHEATING, ATTACKING, WHICH IS NOT WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT IN THIS CAMPAIGN. WHAT THEY WANT IS ANSWERS, SOLUTIONS, IDEAS, A PLAN TO GET THE COUNTRY UPRIGHT AND BACK ON TRACK, ALL OF WHICH MCCAIN IS TOTALLY UNABLE TO DO.

3. WHEN MCCAIN LOSES IN NOVEMBER I HOPE THAT HE STILL FEELS THAT TRADING HIS INTEGRITY, MORALS, AND CHARACTER, IN PURSUIT OF HIS LUST TO BE PRESIDENT, WAS WORTH IT.

NO ONE OTHER THAN JOHN MCCAIN HIMSELF WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS LOSS, AGAIN, AND FOR THE LAST TIME.

2. at a time when the nation is suffering a severe economic downturn, all you hear from PALIN/MCCAIN are negatives.

If you put your country first, you will help people understand what you can do for them. ITS NOT WHAT PALIN CAN DO FOR YOU MCCAIN, ITS WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRY AT A TIME LIKE THIS!

THANK GOD AMERICA IS WAKING UP AND SEEING MCCAIN AND PALIN FOR EXACTLY WHAT THEY ARE…………..DESPERATE, LYING, ATTACKING, DISTORTING AND ACCUSING……DID I MENTION DESPERATE?

McCain has concluded that the only way he can get enough votes is to pay for them with his once-valued dignity and honor. And it appears he's not planning to leave any of that precious personal capital in the bank by the time election day rolls around.

So here it comes. One last desperate, pathetic, sordid attempt to distract the country from anything resembling a real debate about a real issue. Don't have health care? Rezko, Rezko, Rezko. Wonder why our financial system is on the brink of collapse? Ayers, Ayers, Ayers. Worried about whether we'll ever get out of Iraq? Wright, Wright, Wright.

McCain and his hatchet mom VP nominee are hoping to expose the "real" Barack Obama to the people of America; but what they are really exposing is how morally corrupt McCain has become. And how complete has been his transformation from a noble reformer, willing to stand up to his own party when it failed to meet his moral code, into an ignoble hack, willing to abandon his most deeply held values in his lust for the presidency.

This was John McCain in 2000, commenting on the disgusting attacks against him by Karl Rove, George Bush, and a few of the people now doing their very dirty work for him.

"Sooner or later people are going to figure out that if all you run is negative attack ads you don't have much of a vision for the future, or you're not ready to articulate it."

A LOT HAS CHANGED IN 8 YEARS, HUH, JOHHNY BOY?

Tax Issues for Sarah Palin

Sarah Palin released her 2006 and 2007 tax returns on October 3, 2008. She received reimbursements totaling $43,500 for travel and lodging for her family in connection with state business. Of that total, $25,000 was for her children's travel and $18,500 was for her husband's travel.

Bryan Camp, a tax professor at Texas Tech University School of Law and a former Internal Revenue Service lawyer in Washington, said the IRS would ask several questions to determine whether the travel reimbursements were reported properly. Those questions include whether Mr. Palin and the children were employees of the state of Alaska, whether they traveling for bona fide business purposes, and whether they would have been able to deduct those travel expenses on their own tax returns for business purposes. Because the answer to at least one and possibly more of those questions is no, "The Palins should have reported the $43,500 in family travel allowances received in 2007 as income," Mr. Camp wrote in an analysis.

Also, Sarah Palin accepted $17,000 in per-diem meal payments for nights spent at her home in Wasilla, 40 miles from the governor's office she used in Anchorage, Alaska. She used that office rather than traveling to the state capital of Juneau. Several tax experts have argued this should be counted as taxable income, too.

Can't you see an IRS audit occuring after November 4th?

To all you undecideds….

Over the weekend, John McCain's top adviser announced their plan to stop engaging in a debate over the economy and "turn the page" to more direct, personal attacks on Barack Obama.

In the middle of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, they want to change the subject from the central question of this election. Perhaps because the policies McCain supported these past eight years and wants to continue are pretty hard to defend.

But it's not just McCain's role in the current crisis that they're avoiding. The backward economic philosophy and culture of corruption that helped create the current crisis are looking more and more like the other major financial crisis of our time.

During the savings and loan crisis of the late '80s and early '90s, McCain's political favors and aggressive support for deregulation put him at the center of the fall of Lincoln Savings and Loan, one of the largest in the country. More than 23,000 investors lost their savings. Overall, the savings and loan crisis required the federal government to bail out the savings of hundreds of thousands of families and ultimately cost American taxpayers $124 billion.

Sound familiar?

Easy to remember   October 7th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

It is easy to remember: The elephant stands for the Republicans. If the elephant faces to the right, tail to the left and trunk to the right, then the head down to the legs and the trunk slightly curled up, it form the R, for the Republicans. And then, above all, the long trunk reminds me of Pinocchio………
