NASHVILLE, Tennessee (CNN) - John McCain said he would examine "every" government program and "eliminate" those which were not working in his second presidential debate with Barack Obama Tuesday.
McCain was responding to a question about what sacrifices he would ask the American people to make.
Obama described his energy program in his answer to the question, saying Americans would have to look at their energy consumption. But he also said he supported more offshore oil drilling, requiring oil companies to drill on the land they already leased from the federal government, and using "clean coal."
Obama earlier in the debate suggested the United States could become "energy independent" within 15 years.
