New Obama, McCain ads say opponent is lying

A new Obama ad accuses McCain of lying to change the subject on the trail.

A new Obama ad accuses McCain of lying to change the subject on the trail.

(CNN) - Hours before they face each other on stage at the second presidential debate, John McCain and Barack Obama each accused the other of deliberate deception in new attack spots released Tuesday.

Earlier: The word “lie” becomes a trail mainstay

"Who is Barack Obama?" asks the announcer in the new 30-second McCain spot, “Hypo.”

The ad includes footage from a Missouri television station that reported "Obama's presidential campaign is asking Missouri law enforcement to target anyone who lies or runs a misleading television ad."

The reporter on that story, John Mills, has since dialed back those allegations, telling a Missouri newspaper that "in the retelling of the story, it got out of control… If they think a group has put out a misleading ad, they’re basically going to call a press conference and say the ad is misleading. I’m sure the Republicans would do the same thing."

The narrator in the McCain ad continues by citing a string of Obama ads whose claims have drawn criticism from independent fact check organizations. "How hypocritical," says the narrator. "Obama's Social Security attack was called 'a falsehood.' His health care attack ... 'misleading'. Obama's stem cell attack ... 'not true'. Barack Obama. He promised better. He lied."

In “Subject,” the Obama camp continues to paint McCain as dishonest and out-of-touch, using a quote from an anonymous campaign aide to the Republican nominee that appeared in Monday’s Daily News: "If we keep talking about the economic crisis, we’re going to lose."

“He’s out of ideas. Out of touch. And running out of time. But with no plan to lift our economy up, John McCain wants to tear Barack Obama down. With smears that have been proven false,” says the narrator in the 30-second spot.

"Why? McCain’s own campaign admits that if the election is about the economy, he’s going to lose,” continues the announcer, as an image of that Daily News quote flashes on the screen.

"But as Americans lose their jobs, homes and savings, it’s time for a President who’ll change the economy. Not change the subject."

The campaigns did not reveal the extent of their ad buys. The McCain camp said that “Hypo” would be “televised nationally”; the Obama team said “Subject” would air on national cable beginning Tuesday.

Stay on him Barack! I love how you respond right away. You need to start on Sarah Palin's lies and avoidance of the law as well.

At least CNN factcheck is calling them on it.

As I write this, I am listeng to two attorneys outside my office, and one, a conservative, is gleeful that Obama will get in because the spate of anti-business legislation that will issue forth will be a bonanza for lawyers.

John McCain sat on the board of a company run by a guy named Singlaub who worked with Right Wing Death Squads in Central America and was linked to Nazi sympathizers. The US Counci for World Freedom. They were invoved in the Iran Contra deal with Ronald (mommy my diaper is full) Reagan in the 80s. If true, OOOPs. I guess Obama and Ayers aren't the only ones with shady affiliations. Try that one on Fido. Since JM and his pet Fido have no ideas on what to do, it will be attack. They'd better be ready to get it back as much as they as they dish it....

McCain is NOT a leader..... He does NOT want to talk about the Economic Crisis. McCain is dividing our great country, McCain is ERRATIC. Look how UNSTABLE McCain is in a CRISIS.... McCain has truly lost his bearings.

When all is said and done, Obama goes down in November because of two issues that just won't go away.

    1. Jeremiah Wright
    2. Michelle Obama

Despite listening to him speak in tongues for 20 months, the American voter still doesn't know who Obama REALLY is - or what he REALLY stands for - but these two issues are clear to everyone - and they will stick!

So basically from John Mill's statement McCain's ad about Obama lying is a lie itself??

McCain also leaves out that he promised to run a clean campaign on the issues.

    How hypocritical McCain is!!!

McCain is slipping in the polls......his credibility is slipping......and so is his sanity.

His ambition to be the POTUS......his life's dream......slipping through his fingers like the blowing breeze.

    Such a shame...........or maybe NOT!!!!

    Obama/Biden 2008 😉

McCain is a bitter, sickly, old fool. John McCain is a liar, who due to his age and failing health, would most likely not even see out a first term in office. The only person who world leaders would respect even less than McCain is Palin.

I am so angry........................I watch the news I read a lot of newspapers and I am no way stupid. I watch both camps and I hear only garbage from one camp and ideas from the other. This is not going to change my mind except that no way will I believe any thing out of McCain and Palin's mouth. I always thought he was a very honest man. Do they really believe what they say?

When McCain gets criticized he thinks people are lying or out to get him. No McCain, it is the TRUTH.

However, McCain has begun to lie and he can not stop. He is way behind in the polls and it is the only thing he can do. It is sad to see how power can corrupt such a heroic war hero. Kings and wanna-be kings through out time and in all places have done the most terrible things to just grasp that power that seems so close or that appears to be slipping away.

    Very sad McCain.

The McShouldbeShame campaign has sunken to a new low. How in the world can he call anyone a liar, when him and his pitbull are lying to the American people everyday. He has no honor left! If he was so honorable how can he be this slimey now? He must have been this way before. Country first, he is not! He's all about himself. I haven't heard anything in the past week that has to do with the crisis the American people are facing. The McCain campaign is a disgrace!

All you have to do is go to factcheck to know who is lying. McCain has displayed NOSHAME. The claim about Obama and Ayers is mind boggling. Especially when citizens are going to be working until we put them out to pasture.

Sad that you have to fact check every word that comes out of McUnhinged and Caribou's mouths...

What?!? Politicians telling lies??? I can't believe this is happening! Just kidding. I ask you, if they weren't all telling lies, then factcheck.com would be out of business. It would be more newsworthy if you caught a politician telling the truth.

No negative...everyone needs to tell us, the public, what they are going to do, and how...enough is enough.
Obama continue on the high road,,,do let McCain drag what has been a positive and informative campaign into the mud..which is what he is trying to do. Stray cool tonight and answer the questions with facts and programs..do not get into he said/she said mud..
McCain when are you going to live up to your promise that the campaign you would run would be positive...has not been since day on...you continue to say you suspneded your camapign and stopped ads yet her in Pa they were continuing to run...It is time for you to level with the voters..if you ahve no ideas tell us...stop the negative..be honest and forthright...that is what a "maverick" would do.

McCain can talk character all he wants, but I have one very simple question for him. My single home investment value went down because my neighbor across the yard is foreclosing, my neighbor across the street file Chapter 11 on his small business. My 401K and small IRA are now worthless, my 6 months old son is oblivious of what’s going on but he’s inherited a debt. How has the current “economic crisis” affected him and his family personally?
