McCain has 30 minutes to have stronger performance. He needs to look more angered at the Washington system and emphasize that he's the person to clean up the mess.

Oh My God....finish angry? You should be grateful that he finished. He didn't do what he needed to do and did come across as a rude and at times confused man.

Janice October 7th, 2008 11:22 pm ET

"Everbody jumps on the statement, This one? McCain meant no malice and you all know that but that is what you consider to be the biggest mistake of the night, you act as if he actually called him a name. You people on here are winning (Obama) give McCain a break and just win graciously stop running him down as if he had no feelings for America."

Janice, it is without exception disrespectful and derogatory to refer to someone sitting right next to you as, 'That one'. It is rude and condescending whether in a Presidental debate or in one's living room. If McCain speaks so disdainfully to Obama, how do you think he's going to speak to the leaders of the rest of the world? In a debate such as this, NUANCE is everything as there are so many tell-tale signs of how a person truly IS deep-down. The tone of voice, the body language, the inflection of phrasing– all these things go beyond the words being said, and say something about the character of a person at their core.

As far as McCain's feelings for the country... well... just ask the 'IAVA' (Iraq-Afghanistan Veteran's of America) what they think of John's feelings for them. They issued him a grade of 'D' for his utter non-support of their needs. Indeed, even 'Vietnam Veteran's of America' states that John McCain voted against their needs, and he's a Vietnam vet himself! Both the 'American Legion' and the 'Veteran's of Foreign Wars' criticized McCain for his stance on the new GI Bill. And according to the 'Disabled Veteran's of America', John had a 20% voting record; he didn't even care enough to bother showing up to vote for them! On the other hand, Obama has been awarded a grade of 'B' for having a voting record of 80% in support of our veterans needs.

Don't just believe me, Janice. Don't just take my word for it. Look these things up for yourself. It's always important to check the facts in these matters. I don't believe stuff just because Obama says so. I check it out. That's what all Americans need to do. We all need to stop listening to the rhetoric and siding with our party affiliation no matter what, and do our NATIONAL, PATRIOTIC HOMEWORK of finding out just what is true and what is not. Only then can we make a truly informed decision as to who is best qualified to lead our country.

God Bless America! and God Bless you, Janice!

vinny NY   October 8th, 2008 12:45 am ET

Who says racisms is dead? I think that MaCain's behavior ex. calling Senator Obama "that one" and not shaking his hand illustrates his true attitude.

I think MaCain is confused and clueless when it comes to gettting our country out of this recession and moving it foward.

POOKY   October 8th, 2008 12:39 am ET

I'm sorry, I'm confused whose mess does he want to clean? The Alaskan Mess with his Running mate Palin and her family woes, The Bush Mess of the War in IRaq and Afganistan, Katrina, Oil Prices and the Crashing Stock Market or His own Mess on How Many Houses does he own? What a joke this McCain Is.

Heidi J. Brown   October 8th, 2008 12:23 am ET

I'm glad I'm not the only one to see that hand shake McCain not-so-cleverly avoided. It's those kind of little signals in body language that turn-off world leaders in the East. When someone can't even put aside their differences long enough to shake hands, it shows how little respect that person has for them. Also I want to add that my family, which is mostly African American, was watching the debate and we didn't find the "that one" comment as a racist remark. It seemed more like a poorly executed, childish and desperate attempt to make Obama look like the bad guy. Failed.

“Close strong” is not the word, Mr. McCain has been doing the same dirty job for over 26 years ... how can he close any better if the facts are the facts!? The only thing they know how to do is BULLY the great citizens of this great country no matter sort of condition we might be in. Look what is going on, do your kids, your grand kids, or any child have any future as you and I have had? Well do they? No!!! Maybe not! And it is because of us putting Mr. Bush and the dark victor VP in office twice, yes two terms. DON’T DO AGAIN. You and I cheated our children and parents, you and I did that!

They have been BULLING us for the past 8 years, covering the TRUTH and now they don't know what to do. EVERYTHING Mr. McCain and his KGB friend do or try to do is not working. NOTHING CAN HIDE THE TRUTH! What strong closing can you have against the truth, other then the truth? They know they cannot fool us any more. YOU SHOW THEM THAT YOU CANNOT BE FOOL AGAIN AS MR. BUSH and is cast HAVE FOOLED US FOR ALL THESE YEARS! ARE YOU BRAVE ENOUGH? ARE YOU???

No doubt about it people have turn that one into a racist statement even when it was not because they want to hear what they want to hear and obama is telling people what they want to hear. And the sad thing they are all believing he can change things when it is actually up to the house and senate people lol

Calm ,cool, collective, strong, strategic & most importanlty Presidential.

Now all the foreign presidents and prime ministers know how McIdiot will address them. They have already met the brainless bimbo in New York.

Obama is going to be a shining star in the league of the
world leaderss.
They already love him. They will love America more.

Our best American foreigh policy strategy is electing Barack Obama / Biden.

This is going to be the best Foreign policy

Poor MCcain, just cant keep up. This townhall meeting style of debate is suppost to be his strong point, but Obama clearly had the slight edge tonight. Sara Palin is only liability. Sara in Montana   October 7th, 2008 11:46 pm ET

Winner and still champion... OBAMA!!!! He's the true leader. McCain is tired, weak, ungentlemanly, and not fit for the presidency. His running mate further weakens his position. Shame it wasn't a closer match.

jaw   October 7th, 2008 11:42 pm ET

It is amazing how collectively stupid people are. Obama didn't answer McCain about how much the fine would be for people who still didn't buy insurance under his proposed health care program would receive. Sounds like another welfare program we don't need.

Monie   October 7th, 2008 11:39 pm ET

No one is or should be calling McCain a racist. I am a black women and did not care about the "that one" bit. I did think that they should have shaked hands, but I believe that was due to the words exchanged that caused McCain not to do so. He could have acknowledged Michelle Obama, as Obama did for Cindy McCain. But the issues with economy, war, healthcare, social security and education.... that is what matters most. McCain is not a racist. At this debate is anything he is a loser.

Lew Mongelluzzo   October 7th, 2008 11:34 pm ET

Obama finally Gaffe when talking about health care, he brought up Delaware lose banking laws, bo who Biden, now you all know!!!!

canadian for obama   October 7th, 2008 11:28 pm ET

hi, i just need to say something here about the hand shake issue. When the mediator was reading the telepromptor, the candidates shook hands. I believe the scene where people saw McCain tap Obama on the back to shake hands, wasn't to shake with Obama, but to let him know that Cindy had arrived on stage so THEY could shake hands.
Listen, if democrats start trying to make these things an issue, you're becoming just as bad as these crazy sleezy republicans. McCain isn't racist. I'm canadian and can't vote, but we have that healthcare you all desire, make the right choice, it works. Obama 08!

Janice   October 7th, 2008 11:22 pm ET

I'm sorry but I think experience and safety of our country is extremely important and Sen McCain is the better candidate. Look at Obama"s
friends and who gain him his inspiration. Rev Wright? Renzo?
Thats a joke. How can you worry about the economy if you don't feel safe. As far as healthcare I want choices not doctor's who can't speak English. I hate the thought of universal healthcare. I also agree with going into Iraq. We haven't had a 911 attack since we got rid of the horrible leadship of Iraq. Also thats a great strong hold for us. I salute Sen McCain for his reality and not empty promises. Thank you sir.

well mc cain lost this one also he keeps useing the same old lines from his campain ,it is sad enough to hear that every day , with out useing them in the debate, also its as if he is in the early stages of altzhimers, he moves very slow , and acts like he has to force himself to keep up , and it was like he can not hold his thoughts for any lenght of time before he wonders off a little from what he was saying, and the fact that mc cain and his wife did not stay to talk to the crowd mc cain and obama shook hands , mc cains wife would not shake obamas wifes hand.then they left. while obama worked the crowed ,almost like clinton use to do, you could see some of the mc cains temperment , he acted very unkind and keepth throwing one liners at obama, then the well im out of here, as if he knew it. he knew that obama won this one . so it's on the road and now the real smears are coming big time. he is looseing and he knows it , he told his campains to watch him tear down obama. now is the time he will get down and dirty he and miss six pack will be out for blood, they now are showing there real selfs. ken

Having watched the debate, I remain dumbfounded over the skill with which both candidates, and in fact 'the politicians' in general, fail to tie together the matter of economics, energy, and security. What they can actually, and realistically do about it.
There are some no-brainer answers to many of these questions that none of the candidates seem to pick up on either.

FL GOP   October 7th, 2008 11:14 pm ET

Yes...agreed, but this event was to be a double edged sword and it failed. The debate's 'fixed' questions only ushered in the standard talking points from both sides for about 80% of the time scope. There should have been more personal questions directly from random audience members asked of these candidates, something that would give further insight into their characters, their souls, their humanity. It was flat for both of them and for the voters. There was neither winner nor loser tonight among the candidates...just among the viewers. I felt like I wasted an hours sleep staying up for this.

F.Johnson.   October 7th, 2008 11:14 pm ET

McCain should be required to take anger management. He is all anger and no plans . Says " I know how to win.:" Where did he learn that and why hasn`t he told George Bush in the last five years of this war in Irag and saved some of our brave troops lives and limbs.?

jazz   October 7th, 2008 11:10 pm ET

People are struggling to pay their health care bills...some people even commit suicide when their insurance companies don't come through for them. Obama thinks affordable health care is a RIGHT, not just an option. McCain thinks its a "responsibility" ...which clearly means it is not a priority for him. Its so clear to me. If health care is costing you too much, vote for Obama. If you can afford it for your entire family with no difficulty, and want to pay more for health care, vote McCain.

I believe a lot of people want to see us achieve a lot better that we have in the last eight years. Minimum wage has not been increase in sooo long. Think of those who have lost their jobs... 750,000. They have to work somewhere to make ends meet for their families. Now they may have to make the minimum wage at a very low rate. these people have children. Holidays are coming up, but bills, rent , mortgage, health insurance (if they have it), food, gas... all of that make it much harder. Atleast Obama has the subject up at hand. How can the rich understand if they have been wealthy for sooo long?

Demo.   October 7th, 2008 11:02 pm ET

Lorrie   October 7th, 2008 11:02 pm ET

McCain didn't even shake Obama's hand when Obama offered it to him. McCain seemed angry.

Shari   October 7th, 2008 11:00 pm ET

Look at Obama. Still speaking to the audience. So warm, engaging, friendly. Mc Cain had to go get his oxygen. Didn't even shake the Obamas' hands. Sad. And Cindy, hands behind her back. I guess Brokaw was the only one worthy of a hand shake from her. Ice queen.

Sad. If you didn't hear what you wanted to hear, Undecides, you saw all you really needed to see.

And "that one"?! Mc Cain must have lost his mind. I wish the media would replay that sound bite up until Nov. 4. Is that the tone he intends to use when addressing world leaders he disagrees with? Oh, America! The choice is clear! You vote for a President or an angry, condescending, out-of- touch warmonger.

Texan for Obama   October 7th, 2008 10:55 pm ET

McCain came across as a certifiable racist. He would repeat the names of the white audience members with questions, yet, would simply begin answering the questions that black audience members made. He then referred to Obama as THAT ONE. Hmmmm....Did he me BLACK ONE? To top it off, he did not shake Obama's hand when he extended it. This is the same McCain that voted against making Martin Luther King Jr. day a holiday twice if i'm correct. The only thing this hate/war monger is missing is a white sheet. McCains actions and behavior are indicative of the old hate and racism that we have all fought so hard to abolish. Lets all move forward by voting for Senator Obama-the self made one.

DollBaby   October 7th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

Shelly said McCain won – WHAT DEBATE WAS she watching.
I think the "that one" comment was a SLUR! Do we really want someone who is so childish as to not shake hands because he is having a tantrum, running the country. Say what you want about Obama and his so-called lack of expereince. Barack Obama is a real person who has a level of maturity, grace and dignity – Something McCain lacks. Furthermore Palin spoke here in Greenville NC tonight – why is there a photo of her sitting in a bar here in GREENVILLE already on the website – THAT is a good look during the campaign. She is a mess.

Ok, so who is the elitist? Could it be the man who refuses to shake an opponent's hand? McCain is so scary–the fake "my friends", the "that one' comment, and his strong opinion that because he was in the military that we can fight our way across the world.

It's sad to see such an "old, tired warrior".

Jack   October 7th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

John McCain is the Washington crowd responsible so, he had to be angry with himself. Since John looks angry all the time, he might just have focused on the real culprit to this mess – himself.

American has not overcome racism but the current situation of economy crisis made people believe Bush and Repulicans failed internally and outwardly. So the situation is forcing Obama to win this election. Internationally America will restore better relationship with other countries. Economy's case, whoever becomes President of USA will have to face tought time and remember, economy has stream so it is nothing to do with who becomes a president. Just this situation will force Obama to win.

i dont know much about politics, but i have been watching the debate between Obama and McCain. However, Obama understands what it is like to not have the means to make it and sacrifices his family had to make whcih made him the person he is today. On the other hand
McCain doesnt. he has several houses, several cars and a private jet.
he will never know what it is like to struggle and try to make ends meet
or wonder how he is going to pay his bills.

Stephanie   October 7th, 2008 10:42 pm ET

McCain's constant use of `my friends' was blatantly insincere especially when he referred to Obama as `that one'. His tone of voice was fake – he was probably seething inside. How can you trust a man like this?

David   October 7th, 2008 10:41 pm ET

Whatever he needed to do, he didn't do it. He looks unsteady on his feet, and unsteady in his answers.

He seems to be stuck on small, Senate procedural problems at home (earmarks! earmarks! as if that isn't how people in Congress get money for their states) and old battles (When I look in Putin's eyes I see K-G-B) outside our borders.

A small, tired man fighting small, tired battles.

Critial Thinking,

Perhaps you might also add:

1.) If Obama had made at least one comment publicly about only being referred to as a "black man" instead of what he really is, a "multi-racial man," would the race be this close? After all, we all know racism still exists in America today. Shameful, but shamefully so...It's unfortunate that this incredibly talented Senator Obama has allowed for the media to ping him as simply "black," instead of being black AND white...Why not appeal to both the white AND black voter at the same time? P.s.-I wonder how his Mother feels about that...?

Stephen F. Phillips-Scott   October 7th, 2008 10:38 pm ET

...."to know when to use force." This the greater part of the valient. Too bad America with McCain's original and continued support for the invation of Iraq, has squandered our moral and ethical obligations for national security and left us bankrupt, but Haliburton and other international companies raking-in the spoils of war profiteering. Our national security and ability to use military force wisely is why McCain can only say that we must give Ukraine and Georgia our moral support. To use military force we must first regain the moral support we once enjoyed that gave America the highest status to use both carrot and stick. Now, our carrots are too expensive and our stick is stuck. Where's McCain's plan to regain and rebuild the moral/ethical support to restore our world standing? Then he can talk about "moral" support to Ukraine as having any meaning or results.

Miss Sanchez, would you please explain to me how you can witness this train wreck of Mr. McCain and then tell the american people he could or would lead us? You seem like such a smart woman on cnn and to hear you defend him makes me wonder why anyone would endorse him. He seem lost and angry and not looking for the best interest of the country. I think you are very good on CNN, but can not believe you believe he is a president for this bleak time in our country.

Thanks

Southern Girl for Obama   October 7th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Amy in Texas...read your BIBLE! Being a Christian is predicated on belief in Christ and a personal relationship with Him, not who you vote for!!!!!!!

I am a born again Christian and I am voting for Barack Obama & Joe Biden. You are the type of person who gives other Christians a bad name with your pharisaical hypocrisy.

Zeke   October 7th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Brokaw decided at the end of the debate to let Obama know that there are others that don't know what to say when they can't see a teleprompter.

Randall   October 7th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Back to the housing issues stemming from Fannie and Freddie, was it not around 10 years ago under the Clinton administration that the government was calling to put first time homebuyers into homes and do whatever it takes to do so (led to government sponsored programs)? They claimed this is what our country needed to turn our economy around during that time period, which in essence created the housing bubble. How come we continue to hear "Wall Street", but no blame on the government? Bush spent the past 7.5 years cleaning up Clinton's doings or lack there of.

Roland S. Martin   October 7th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Did you guys see that?

Obama stuck out his hand to shake McCain's hand, and he pointed to Cindy McCain!

After Obama shook her hand, McCain didn't shake his hand.

Punk move.

Monie   October 7th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

OMG, why did they not shake when the debate was over? Not good! Tell me something people?

reggiescott101021   October 7th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

I Feel obama did a great job tonight

damian   October 7th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

mccain clearly has distane for obama, and that came thru tonight.

Elle   October 7th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

In closing, McCain brought up that he did not see his father growing up...could it be partly due to the fact that he was enrolled in one of the country's most prestigious boarding school?
Aside from that, education is NOT being mentioned ENOUGH!
With John McCain's comments about Bin Laden and claiming that he knows how to get him and will???? Why hasn't he done so then???

John   October 7th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

He didn't close strong. McCain dropped the ball tonite. He began breaking all the rules at the beginning with through Brokav off. McCain just totally messed up frankly.

Jackie in Canada   October 7th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

McCain wouldn't even shake Obama's hand – what a crankypants!

Rude!!

michael   October 7th, 2008 10:36 pm ET

I can't believe McCain wasted his last comment on talking about his service in Vietnam for the umpteenth time. Well, I guess I can he does it at every juncture... He is a rather pitiful fellow – what a waste...

Mike-67   October 7th, 2008 10:36 pm ET

Wow .. McCain sure loves wars ... does he miss the 1960's ... this is like a history lesson ... same policies nothing new nothing 'mavericky' ... he is using the same old tactics as Bush – scare joe six pack and hockey moms (it was soccer moms with Bush)

Country First??? Actually Attack First, Country Second!   October 7th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

McCain did not close strong! Very weak!

Me   October 7th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

Well, I have officially made up my mind as to who I am going to vote for. Up until this point I have been very undecided, but I have not decided that I will vote for Obama. Obama seems to have talked the smartest during this debate. McCain seems to have been out of touch with the American people.

momzt   October 7th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

I guess some of you people read the fact checker and you must be "viewing" the facts in braille. Let's Just be real about this, the fact of the matter is that you have a man here who lived his life as he was suppose to and he epitomizes the American Dream and you have those who have lived it and those who struggle, beg, borrow, and steal for it. Obama has followed the rules in achieving goals and a true desire to bring everyone in on the American Dream without leaving the hard workers behind. We are over due for doing our on parts for a better America, we need to start somewhere I say I would much rather start with a person I can Identify with.. I cannot Identify with McCain's policy it doesn't fit my budget.

Sara in Montana   October 7th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

Besides McCain the other loser tonight was Brokaw. Talk about grumpy and not in control. Well here in MT he has that reputation anyway.

zuq   October 7th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

Barack crushed McCain. McCain couldn't answer a question!

michael   October 7th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

McCain's answer to the last question was probably one of his best tonight, but – unfortunately – not a strong enough closing to help the overall outcome.

Jerry in Missouri   October 7th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

At least McCain could answer a question straight. NObama works around it. Like one of the posters said, stupid people deserve who they get. Unfortunately, their blindness will affect me and my family.

Roland S. Martin   October 7th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

McCain keeps talking about his service in the military in his closing. He didn't sit next to the voter at the kitchen table.

He failed in his closing statements. He just didn't close the deal.

Shelly   October 7th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

McCain won handily – he answered the questions – Obama did not!!!

Deborah   October 7th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

He is Strong. A lot stronger than Obama could ever be at such a young age. We need his strength and we need his experience. I believe Mc Cain overwhelmingly won tonights debate.

alex   October 7th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

McCain never said maverick Palin never stopped saying it

GreenDemo   October 7th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

Obama is the only one that can help this country. He can provide us with hope, worth believe in! McCain offers little, confuses most and forgets his own history half the time. After tonights debate, I'm definently voting for Obama. And for Pat Bucannan, your precisous Palin, and McCain LOST tonight! No matter what you can pull our of your britches!

Angel   October 7th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

McCain is so so tired. The "my friend" comment needs to stop. Also he was so disrespectful calling Obama "that one". And, he is talking down to the American people...not giving specifics about his plans. He keeps saying that he knows how to win in Irag and everywhere else the military may be used. What a warmonger. And just because he was a POW doesn't mean he knows how to win!

Rafael Hernandez Saca   October 7th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

I too appreciate the service that McCain has done for this country. But we don't have to give him the presidency just because he served in the Vietnam War. Again we are all thankful to all the troops but we are trying to choose for change not on who won wars. The Economy is a disaster, and the approval rating for America is a ll time LOW.. We need change and I think Senator OBAMA is the one to do it. .

Sam   October 7th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

Like Mike, I am republican, but cannot bear to see them win this time. We need to make a fundamental change in our direction and I do not see McCain taking us in any new direction than we have been

Jon R   October 7th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

It's unfortunate to be in the Military during a Republican-President's administration...I wish I could run down the streets on-base wearing an Obama t-shirt!!!!!!!!

Abeslom   October 7th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

I am sorry for all you McCain supporters! It looks like the debates are 3-0 so far.

PinNC   October 7th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

McCain needs to close his mouth period..!!! "That one"...said it all. Who was he referring to?

Sara in Montana   October 7th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

My friends, the fat lady has sung. OBAMA on 11/4.

Eldar   October 7th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

This country needs to change it's course of constant confrontation if we want to move forward, but I guess this is the only way for neocons to keep the Nation hostage for their personal gain.

OBAMA/BIDEN '08

Griff   October 7th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

Your Wife? Obama is an American Citizen.. Your Not.

Obama fan   October 7th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

McCain said Obama is not experienced, but look who he picked for his vic presidence if he kick over.

FaireMaiden   October 7th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

McCain does not represent 'change'. And that is what this country needs, badly. His demeanor, his vocalization, his patronizing attitude of 'I'm the Statesman here', is nothing more than an old, crystallized man who looks as tho he sill shatter if you touch him. It's over and done with. McCain cannot bring what he doesn't believe in: the fundamental changes in attitude, priorities, and distribution of wealth this country desperately needs. Once again, McCain appears elitist towards that 'good ol' boy network', whilst Obama appears 'for the people'. In my view, McCain is just plain too old, too rigid, too deep in others' pockets, too washed-up.

Hoosier in Canada   October 7th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

Someone below asked how a Christian could vote for Obama. Seems to me that someone who prefers not to start unjustified wars, who seeks to take care of sick children, and who is willing to talk even to his enemies, is actually a far better Christian than those who would do the opposite.

Roland S. Martin   October 7th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

Leslie,

McCain got totally dusted tonight.

This was supposed to be his format and he got body slammed by Obama.

The dials of the uncommitted voters were off the chart for Obama.

McCain is a HUGE loser tonight.

damian   October 7th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

mccain has been flat

Sara in Montana   October 7th, 2008 10:32 pm ET

McCain's going down in a blaze of weakness. He is really weak tonight. Obama's strong and presidential and serious. McCain keeps making lame jokes and fumbling and saying 'my friends'. Creepy and weak.

madeline   October 7th, 2008 10:32 pm ET

Go McCain. Texans for McCain. Osama Obama hasn't done anything. Voting "present" on issues is not what we need in a president.

idc   October 7th, 2008 10:32 pm ET

As a Christian it is my duty to stand in the gap for the weak, but McCain/Palin could not lead this country out of this mess. Obama, is tolerant so was Jesus and furthermore God's love is all about choice. Mr. Obama has to win!

Marilyn   October 7th, 2008 10:32 pm ET

This is a very disappointing debate to watch. I was hoping for a postive discussion of what the American people care about the most and instead it's turned into a slander fest on both parts. The candidates have both decided not to answer the questions and have put their own agendas forward, asking for time to rebut like a spoiled child asking for a piece of candy. I am voting for McCain and can only hope that he realizes he needs to focus on the issues and what HE would do specifically, not what Obama would do incorrectly.

Critical Thinking   October 7th, 2008 10:32 pm ET

(1) Is Brokaw biased towards McCain?

(2) If Obama was a white male, would the race be this close?

(3) If McCain were as sharp as Obama, would the race be this close?

(4) Is Obama having to work twice as hard to gain the trust of a substantial number of white Americans, and if so, why? Isn't he half-white?

(5) If you think the aforementioned questions were offensive, then go to PBS Frontline on the Internet and watch the video on what it takes to be qualified for President before asking for an apology.

Lana   October 7th, 2008 10:32 pm ET

McCain has given me a headache... Can't beleive I missed the First 48 for this. LOL... OBAMA has shined – he has answered the questions. OMABA has been very successful on all accounts. McCain has made his lame attempt at standup comedy – he failed! AND Tom B. has let his republican tendancies shine through. I usually like him but he was a DISAPPOINTMENT tonight. Finally why did McCain steal Obama's slogan for change... what a loser.

damian   October 7th, 2008 10:32 pm ET

leslie, i agree with over and over again. Bill has lost the plot. i cant believe earlier he stated that he would rather be out of a job and broke and still have the government keep spending $12bill. a month on iraq.

charles   October 7th, 2008 10:32 pm ET

don't drift barak. he's doing great.

Tam   October 7th, 2008 10:32 pm ET

McCain appears to be acting and snide and frankly out of touch. I do not know if this is stratigy or old age. It is extremely important to have his health records released!!! There is no way that this man is fit to lead our country!! It appears that McCain is willing to go to any length to win and the babbling is either an attempt to confuse us or a sign of illness!! The AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE sick and tired of the attempt to con us into a vote. No fear, no babbling, no scare tatics, no Palin mis-direction- WE JUST WANT FACTS AND SOLUTIONS and McCain, my friends, you have none! Obama is well spoken, has a plan, has facts and UNDERSTANDS WHERE WE ARE, HOW WE GOT HERE AND HOW TO LEAD US OUT!!! Obama is the real leader and he is going to save us all, just like clinton had to do.

JennFlorida   October 7th, 2008 10:32 pm ET

What does being Christian have to do with voting for McCain? Besides doesn't the Constitution support the seperation of Church and state. Aren't Palin and McCain big on sticking to the constitution?

I

Jon R   October 7th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

I'm 30 minutes behind live programming, but Senator McCain just tried a weak attempt at what appeared to be a joke.

McCain: Yes but before we go to that Tom, 'did we find out the size of the fine?'

What was all that about? What's he talking about?

Griff   October 7th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

Barack Obama? who never served his Country....It's like Electing an Alien....

Joann   October 7th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

That's impossible...he's spending so much time reliving the past he can't articulate the future.

L.   October 7th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

How does one reform a system of which they have been a party for 26 years? That's a little ridiculous, don't you think? He's had almost 30 years to fix something and has not – why would he be able to as president?

New Orleans   October 7th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

I was not 'on the fence' and will not decide who to vote for based on this debate – but omg, McCain looks like he has a tummy ache and having a hard time focusing.

Susan Pottstown, Pa   October 7th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

Why is she so partisan. Why can't Sanchez ever give constructive criticism of her own party once in a while? Like Palin for instance. I can't understand how anyone can hold her up.
Harold Ford does on MSNBC. When Barack had his first debate with the angry old man (and I mean ever word of that), he gave some criticism of Barack and they're friends.

steve   October 7th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

I'm getting really tired of McCain trying to win me over by calling me his friend. He should stick to the honest facts instead of beating the same old stuff over and over.

Tee   October 7th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

This is in response to your negative attacks in tonight campaign. Sorry. I agree with you totally. And I am so disgusting with both candidates; they are not addressing the issues at all. These type of negative attacks is why some people do not vote at all, why they do not trust politicians. I only hear a specific plan once tonight from either of the candidates, and that was on their tax plan, which I don't like neither plan, both of them need to do more work on their tax plan. In my disgust, I am considering not watching the last debate at all. Why watch? When it is going to be some of the same, more negative attacks.

Lia from WI   October 7th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

McCain said "my friends" but he forgot to wink....

madeline   October 7th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

Where do you people live who are making these comments? Are we listening to the same debate??????
Maybe you have an auditory processing problem.

Mike   October 7th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

Is it so hard to be specific about future plans? John keeps talking about the past, he is not taking the high road this week. Obama is more believable. I've been a life long Republican and after 56 years, I will be voting Demo. It is a matter of trust.
To me Bush was a 'Maverick' and look where it got us...
Thank you for listening... I do appreciate your outlook of the issues.

Sam   October 7th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

McCain can help himself by focusing on his policies than by focusing on Obama. He looks desperate with the street fight approach. Give credit to your policies and look like a president

Cristina   October 7th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

I am all for Obama. However this debate on both sides is a lot more impersonal than i thought it would be

Almaz   October 7th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

Yes McCain, did refer to Obama as "that one"... His condescending, patronizing tone continued into the foreign policy section where he got his butt kicked up around his comb over... Obama supporters have got to make sure that we turn out in huge numbers to counteract any manipulations on the part of the opposition on election day and before... i say this because for all intents and purpose..THIS RACE IS OVER...McCain and his surrogates will have no choice but to get far down in the dirt in desperation after yet another dismal debate performance.

jojodancer1119   October 7th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

Why is it that McCain does not acknowledge that come from the African-Americans by name but he can acknowledge the White Americans by their first name? He's nothing but an OLD racist. He'll never have my vote.

Arizona voter   October 7th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

McCain keeps saying "I know how to do it". Is this like Bush, if you keep saying it, it will somehow come true? Where has he proven that he "knows how to do it"?

Reagan   October 7th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

I do not pity the O'Bama supporters because stupid people deserve to have stupid people lead them.

O'bama has blabbered this entire Town Hall debate. This is so predictable and he needs to say something different. I have heard the stump speeches over and over again. I would like to really hear something new.

I want to know when his health care plan will go into effect since he has quietly said that it won't happen right away now because of the bail out.

storm   October 7th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

why he showing theactrics, i thought they werent suppose to touch the audience!

j6pak   October 7th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

McCain said he will initiate a spending freeze and yet fix all our problems. that does not make sense. He couldn't even work on his campaign and vote on the bail-out package at the same time. McCain also talked about the "cronyism" in washington and yet, he uses lobbyist to run his campaign. He's good at double-talk, denouncing it and exemplifying it at the same time. McCain is so 20th century.

Martie   October 7th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

UNDERSTAND THAT AMERICAN PEOPLE. and His mother is white she named him OBAMA okay PEOPLE. because i am biracial.

monika   October 7th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

McCain does not seem up to par like Obama is. I can't believe that people would be willing to vote someone of his age and health into office when he has such an unexperienced vice president on his ticket. It seems like the worst thing to do right now. Forget finishing strong...its not going to matter anyway.

Rafael Hernandez Saca   October 7th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

McCain is not making any sense, number one he is not answering the questions that are being asked, number two he just keeps saying that Senator Obama has no experience in foreign policies, and number three he sounds weak and is not making sense on the question that the voters have. I think Senator Obama is hitting his groove.

Wisconsin woman for Obama   October 7th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

My friends..... don't be frustrated, the war is more important to McCain than the economy...

Hoosier in Canada   October 7th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

How can McCain possibly rage against Washington when he's been in the upper house for 26 years? It would be an odd sort of self-loathing. I think Biden said it best last week – McCain may have been a maverick on some issues, but for the past decade he's truly been part of the establishment, and esp. a supporter/co-architect of the Bush fiasco. Obama can rage against it - his limited years in the Senate are used against him all the time. On defense as with everything else tonite, though, McCain keeps saying "I know how to do it" but isn't telling us how he'd do it!

michael   October 7th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

KG – McCain didn't wear a flag pin in the first debate either....

McCain keeps accusing Obama of lying and I don't mean he's twisting his words but point blank lying about Obama's positions.Anyone challenging this? What does this say about his character?

Fe   October 7th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

I'm very much disgusted and felt so insecure of the insensitivity of Mr. McCain on the American peple. If ever he wins, US has to continue his idea of war success in Iraq even if it is obvious that we have successfully torn down Iraqi culture and civilization and reduced them into anarchy. Shame on us on going into war and to continue that war despite their unwillingness of US continued stay there. Why???? IN ORDER TO PROTECT THE BUSINESS INTEREST OF HIS FRIENDS DOING OIL & OTHER RELATED BUSINESS THERE USING US MILITARY POWER AND RESOURCES, PARTICULARLY HUMAN BEINGS. Isn't that a shame to the US nation? I wonder how he can sleep soundly at night knowing he put the American people at risk of hatred and retaliation of those Iraqis who lost their loved ones. For sure, we will continue counting Ben Ladens in the future, unless war is stopped. If McCain wins war will be an on-going affair and we can expect the continued $10B/mo or more government spending abroad.

GoObama   October 7th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

McCain will attack tomorrow from some city and Palin is preparing her nasty speech to attack Obama personally.

Keith Reid, Newark, N.J.   October 7th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

I think Sen. McCain is once again showing why he has been called by some of his senate critics as not ready to lead America as president due to his temper.

I think it was discourteous to refer to Sen. Obama as "that one" regarding a vote Sen. Obama cast in the U.S. Senate.

When the pressure is on Sen. McCain he seems to lose his perspective. Will he lose it as president?

LouAnn   October 7th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

***Yawn*** My Friends, McCain is sooooo boring! I thought he would be different in a town hall environment, but he is the same as always. I think when this is over, this debate will once again go to Obama.

R. Squibbs   October 7th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

Man, McCain is really dragging tonight. If he doesn't do himself any harm - there's no way he's doing himself any good - I'll be very surprised. He just seems tired and unable to keep up with the changing contours of the campaign, and of the country's and the world's problems.

McCain Sounds Like He wants War with Russia! Yikes!!!   October 7th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

Why is Brokaw giving McCain all the questions? Seems like McCain is the one that America doesn't know? Who is John McCain? Which McCain is going to have his finger on the button if America is stupid enough to elect him?

New Orleans   October 7th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

I would really like to 'hire Mr. McCain" to work for me in Washington, but I am not his friend – he is not my friend.
I am so tired of hearing him refer to listeners as 'my friend' or 'my good friends'. Really it is so irratating.

John Mc cain is retarded. He's basically on tv not knowing what to say on some question and was just saying whatever comes in his head and he dont make sense.

I can conclude that McCain is racist with his actions tonight.
1. Ingrid asked him a question he did not address her or look at her
2. Instead of calling Obama by name he called him "that one"

He is despicable !

Does anyone else think McCain looks really awkward...?

Patricia   October 7th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

I laughed out loud, remembering Peter Sellers in "Being There"–where at any given time, he appears in the background or to the side of the screen, totally out of place and obtrusive–like McCain whenever Obama is talking, skulking around in the background. How rude. Obama on the other hand, sat politely while McCain was talking, waiting his turn. McCain is so out of touch.

Empire, CO   October 7th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

McCain lost this debate in the first 5 minutes, he is only digging a deeper hole for himself. He has no clear plan for anything, except to continue the military effort and bomb other nations. McCain doesn't understand healthcare or the Economy at all!

The line is fascinating. As a Communication Coach, it would be interesting to watch this Town Hall if both candidates understood that the line drops every time they talk about the other. Obama had to be stronger without being a bully.

From a communication standpoint, he succeeded. McCain is more challenged, he has to be strong without being testy.
how can McCain be so sure he can get Osama, why if he is so sure, does he not tell Bush? why is he so sure he can fix washington–how.
as a communication coach, I preach to speak in a way that protects your value. whose value was protected?

valerie rankin   October 7th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Cackles in Pennsylvania   October 7th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

It will take him a lot longer than 30 minutes to even finish 2nd tonight, McCain is doing a lot of drooling and slurping when he speaks.......the liar is tripping over his tongue..........there's nothing McCain could ever say anymore that would make me vote for him......I have lost all respect for him with his vicious campaign tactics......Sarah Palin and McCain are going to incite riots and racism in this country due to their despicable lies.......hopefully no one gets caught in the crossfire of their evil......I'm glad I don't read the Good Book, because it apparently breeds evil and contempt among the conservative base......shame ,shame, shame on McCain and Palin
I'm a big believer in you Reap what you Sow, so McCain and Palin

I agree. He's had plenty of opening to show some fire and hasn't done so. Way too patronizing. He needs to get mad about something – god knows the electorate is!

Matt   October 7th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

McCain is again turning to attacks and lacking substance throughout the debate. Voters are by far reacting much more positive to Obama, who is offering real solutions for change. McCain and the GOP are not connecting with voters by attacking Obama. It has been very intriguing watchin the line on CNN where voters are not receptive to McCain's attacks. As a democrat, Obama exceeded even my expectations. I expected attacks on both sides, but Obama stuck to substance. Finally!

talk soft but carry a big stick....is McCain saying be sneaky...is he announcing that he is going to be a sneaky, untrustworthy President if chosen?

michael   October 7th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Still unclear on the "McCain" doctrine – nor has McCain answered several other questions (i.e., "drunk" economy).....he seems more focused on responding to Obama instead of answering the question(s) – esp. when he follows Obama.

Both have stuck to their talking points with little new information or details about their plans being presented. Hence, I consider this a DRAW – or, in McCain's case, a loss since he is supposedly better at Town Hall settings. I doubt the minds' of undecided voters have changed.....

diane   October 7th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

McCain pushed for this type of a debate forum, and yet, he is doing very poorly this evening. He is unable to sit still, has limited movement in his shoulders/upper body, and is having difficulty finding words. For someone who professes to prefer a "town hall" setting, his ability to connect with the studio audience, and audience in general is poor.

I know you can tell from the CNN life lines at the bottom that everytime McCain attacks, they go down. You can lean to your party all you want, but Obama is the best choice. I am from San Antonio Texas with a big hispanic population and we are really big on Obama rallys and helping the community. And come on "Carry a Big Stick" He's throwing out Teddy Roosevelt quotes. He wishes he was Teddy. Teddy wouldn't have chosen a Hockey Mom. Good day Leslie if you read this. :-) Go Red socks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TanyaAlpha   October 7th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Whilst respecting the sacrifice of the american soldiers across the world, there is one thing that Senator McCain needs to realize: other nations in the world are not convinced about the good intents of the US. The presence in Iraq was driven by domestic US interests. Many other countries facing real humanitarian issues or representing a true security risk were totally ignored. The US image needs to be restored. Allies are disappearing.

Ashley   October 7th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

He looks like some irritated grandpa at a family dinner. If he says "My friends" once more I'm going to be sick. As far as Reagan – I don't recall homeless folks as a kid until Regan shut down the mental institutions and threw those poor folks to the wolves. Does anyone remember Reaganomics? How did he become an American icon after the Iran Contra affair. Why don't McCain take his ball and go home? He is a Bush man and has Carl Rove's handprints all over him.

James in Santa Fe   October 7th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Holly in NJ   October 7th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

McCain is being patronizing and bullying. All he is doing is trying to attack Obama over every issue...instead of actually answering the questions. he goes off on his little rambles and out and out LIES about certain things that he has brought up at other times that have been proven to be false.
The man is a joke.

I keep hearing John McCain say phrases like "bringing our troops home in defeat," "coming home humiliated," and "waving white flag of surrender." The office of the Presidency in my view does not have luxury of preoccupation with these largely emotional indulgencies. As President we need someone who can make calculated, well-reasoned, and rational decisions based on our best national interests not based on pride, anger, and insecurities. I am an independent and that is at least my view...

Mark Stouffer   October 7th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Obama, on the other hand, has been his best, so far, in a debate. He's offering far more specifics and detailed plans than McSame, who's starting to sound like Sarah Palin.

Neither a Republican nor a Democrat so no vested interest.Note with interest how personal attacks do not sit well wtih the voters. Immediate dips from all town hall particpants. McCain has been on a mission to show Obama in poor light. Unfortunately, it appears to be backfiring. Moreover, he sounds too sincere – more like a slick salesman!! Mr. McCain, opportunity knocks only once, this was yours and you blew it.

I'm so mad at the $5000 healthcare proposal from John McCain. My husband and I had to come up with over $15,000 in the last half of 2006 and 2007 to cover just our insurance deductibles. $5,000... won't even touch what is needed!

Southern Girl for Obama   October 7th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

McCain's credibility is shot. There is little to no resemblance to McCain the Maverick I respected. More like McCain the Miserable. And Senator McCain, the correct quote was "walk softly, but carry a big stick". You even misquote Teddy Roosevelt! Geesh!

McCain needs to switch to his real voice. his slow speech and low volume are not instilling confidence but rather make me feel he is trying to put one over on me. He speaks in the low volume so you have to pay attention. But his speech pattern seems restricted and overly concerned about how he looks and sounds for the camera, not what he is saying.
Obama's speech pattern is more confident sounding.

How about seeing the financial crisis in a global setting; a few years ago we witnessed the down fall of communism, now we are seeing that capitalism per se (a market run by greedy people) is not working either. How are we going to "fix" the economy on a global scale? What sort of oversight should be accpetable in an open market? How are we going to decrease the deficits? And who is paying for all of this?

Jackie in Canada   October 7th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Mc Cain doesn't have to "look" angry, he ALWAYS looks that way! John McCain has been in Washington for a quarter century and what exactly has he changed? Since he often says "I know how to do it" (the it being whatever the topic is that he KNOWS how to fix), why hasn't he done it in a QUARTER century?

Why does Brokaw let Mccain mumble on and on and keep cutting Obama off??

hello   October 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Unfortunately, he (McCain) is not a closer, and would not be able to close it. Senator Obama looks very presidential and answers every question accrately and honestly. Senator McCain instead is defensive, attacking and giving off answers

South Dakota Democrat   October 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

"Close strong"....My gosh, let's start by just not looking senile.

marge   October 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

McCain needs a lot of things.....He can say anything (as he most certainly does) BUT say isn't doing....now it it????

Ana   October 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Obama is awesome in every single answer.. he can even pronounce the names of the countries correctly.. (Iraq and Pakistan)..

Obama '08 & '12

mama sue   October 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

McCain just looks like he hates Obama, not like he is angered at Washington. He won't close strong, just like he didn't open strong. Because he's not strong. He's just old, out of touch and condescending. Watch the lines...

OBAMA/BIDEN '08   October 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Thank you texas voter! I'm a native Texan too. ;-)

Marna   October 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

He has alot of time to make up for. His performance so far has been dismall. I want him to quit saying "my friend". He is not any thing like I would want a friend to be.

Melissa, Amelia Island Florida   October 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

McCain is doing a great job with the debate! I believe that he is the man to lead this country and clean up the mess from Bush's administration. I don't think Obama has a clue. He sounds like a puppet. I am not even sure Obama believes what he says. I am convinced more now than ever that Mcain is the best candidate to be our next President.

EBC, Boyds, MD   October 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Sen. John McCain is starting to sound like he's stumping. He keeps talking in circles and NOT answering the question. There is NO STRONG finish here.

The same "talking points", the same "war stories"..... but NO ANSWERS!!

I don't need to hear about Ronald Reagan and Sen. McCain's WAR RECORD!!!

I don't need Sen. McCain to patronize me when it comes to the issues facing our economy.

Layer 8 Mike   October 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Sen McCain's flatlining on the dial-testing is turning into a perfect visual metaphor for his campaign and his positions....what a stark contrast between the two in every facet, the dial testing is bearing that out in no uncertain terms...

Tiff of lithia springs   October 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Republicans think that war stimulates the economy, obviously.

patrick m   October 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

what ever happen to read my lips!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dana Mayo   October 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Obama was Right, Health Care Should be every americans right.

Ramesh Shrestha   October 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Bill, you are dead wrong here. His time is up. He can never do what he has never done before- show anger at Washington. He can only show anger at Obama.

David Stein   October 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

CNN PLEASE POST THIS!!!!!!!
I'm a regular Jewish guy from Canada and am APPALLED. I have a lot of relatives in America and have visited several times. However, how can Americans, the audience allow McCain to call Obama 'this one'!!!!!!!!!!! America, forget the bailout and the crisis for a second, I know it's hard. You have a FUNDAMENTAL problem with equity and tolerance.

Zeke   October 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Uh, um, uh mm, studder, studder, stammer, ah, uh...

Guess we know now why somebody doesn't like the town hall format!

Leslie in Alabama   October 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

How can you look angered at something when you've been a part of it for so long. JUST LOOK AT HIS RECORD!

aa Ny   October 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

McCain is to busy attacking Obama or writing his notes.

Mack   October 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

CNN please remove your focus group the next time. Its most distracting and viewers should be left to make up thier own mind by watching the candidates..last post and changing the channel. Sure you will tell us all what we heard later...even if its not what was said..

GA4OBAMA   October 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

mccain has racist tendencies. he called obama the "other one" when he was talking about the energy vote. calling obama a terrorist because he is brown and has a muslim name. that's racist my friends. and allowing people to shout out terrorist when he is asking who obama is. as well as during palin's speeches people yell out treason and kill him. my friends that's a clan rally.

rosangel..change that im waiting for   October 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Sanchez..McCain is not strong anymore. He is very disrespectful. He referred to Obama as "that one" and nobody talk about it. Mccain is not fix to run this country.

Beth   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

He needed to start strong. Finishing strong isn't going to happen.

Griff   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

John McCain is my Hero... My Mentor... My deliverer... If there ever was a Saint in my Lifetime... This is the Man

Edward in Fort Worth,Tx   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

IF this were a football game. There would be field goals only. 12-6 lead for Obama.

Miller   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Neither candidate has given much more than lip service to the issues. Health care is a perfect example – each talked about eletronic medical records – neither has a clue what price tag that particular comment which sounds so sexy to the public – truly carries. It demonstrates how out of touch they are.

Fabian   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Obama is soooooo weak. He is patronizing and talking down to these people. Who the hell does he think he is?

Debater   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

McCain has not been strong. Schneider is biased as is Brokaw. This is a farce. Is the media trying to keep the election close??? BE FAIR.. Obama is doing a great job answering questions.. McCain is running around in circles mumbling and looking like a fool!

Carmen   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Ummmm, no. When he gets angry he just looks like an angry old man. He's been a part of that Washington System for almost 30 years, so he also looks like a hypocrite.

Angela   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

john mccain is old

alexa   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

yeah but he has to make sure he doesn't sound so negative.

Kris K in CA   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

John McCain seems old and tired. His answers are weak. He spends most of his time whinning about Barack. He is doing miserably.

rachel   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

I don't believe McCain thinks he can solve the mess. He was a good Senator in his time.

David Stein   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

CNN PLEASE POST THIS!!!!!!!
I'm a regular Jewish guy from Canada and am APPALLED. I have a lot of relatives in America and have visited several times. You have a FUNDAMENTAL problem with equity and tolerance.

Cristina   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

He needs to answer the question more directly

curtis in WI   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

If all of MCain's "friends" vote for him, he just might win.....

He's writing this week's SNL skit all by himself.

AKPerera   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Wow! He need to be strong when he first began his political career. Now.....it is a little late.

Jen from IN   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

He always focuses talking points that do not get much of a response from people. He always seems out of touch

louise   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

All McCain wants to do is win – at the risk of everything else. That's not what leadership is. That's not doing what is right.

RG   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

The more McCain talks the more I can imagine Bush saying the same things. McCain's attempt at humor reminds be of Bush and his little snicker.

claimjmpr   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

angered at the 'system'? he IS the 'system'! Go OBAMA!

Thomas   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

JOHN,
The outgoing commander of US troops in Iraq, Gen David Petraeus, has said that he will never declare victory there.
He said he did not know that he would ever use the word "victory": "This is not the sort of struggle where you take a hill, plant the flag and go home to a victory parade... it's not war with a simple slogan."

No Hillary = No Obama   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

How stop. This sounds like the Salem Witch trials – tie McCain to the economic meltdown make his words blasphemous while Obama smooths along his self-righteous path. McCain is the real deal, just like Hillary. Obama is not.

Greg in Oshkosh   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

McCain's "been in these situations before...he KNOWS them." Then WHY did he vote to give power to Bush to invade Iraq???

Janice   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

We have been too aggressive in the last eight years and our reputation as a global leader has hit the skids. We have a strong record for diplomacy, albeit lost at the moment. I agree with exhausting those kinds of efforts before we use force.

Shev   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

I disagree, he has been too aggressive already. Anger towards today's broken government will definitely not help him. He needs to start answering directing his answers to the audience without attacking Obama.

Elizabeth - TEXAS - Former Republican   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

John McCain never won a war. The leaders say we cannot win the war in iraq.

tiffany in ohio   October 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

He cant clean the mess hes part of the mess

Anonymous   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

It seems to me that McCain is more concerned with military victory than the financial well being and future need to defend this country.

SM   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

McCain: "Just take your 5k to another state for your healthcare".
Not everyone has a private plane as he does .

Stacy from Leesburg VA   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Leslie, I think he needed a big time game changer. So far, he seems repetitious of his stump speeches.

Thom   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

McCain can't close strong because he isn't strong! The term he uses far too much, "my friend" or "my friends", is a signal of weakness. His wife Cindy controls him.

texas voter   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

McCain is so patronizing tonight, he is for war no matter what. Please someone tell him to quit calling us his friend.

Wisecanvas   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

More anger from McCain? Seriously dude, seriously! blodshot red eyes won't turn blue states into red states. He needs to create more gravitas not more spew of anger.

hbomb   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

"[He] represents the Lollipop Guild...the Lollipop Guild...the Lollipop Guild..."

Amelia   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

He doesn't appear angered at Washington to me; only at Obama

Dave in Illinois   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

It's good to know that as usual CNN is only allowing positive comments on Obama and negative comments on McCain

Dr. Roy   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Now that discussion has changed to foreign policy, McCain is finishing strong.

Pat   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

McCain needs to stop saying...."My friends"..... He is NOT my friend. I consider friendship too important. He uses that term too loosely and he needs to stop putting himself on the friendship level. He doesn't belong there.

New Day   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Leslie – McCain could take a nap for 30 mins and you'd still say he ended strong.

Lynne   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

to me he just seems angry with everyone...especially Obama...not working for me...I wont be voting for him

Cristina   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

I am waiting for the Palin v Obama debate. McCain is not up to anything here. And enough with the "my friends"

REAL Christian for OBAMA   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

He looks just PLAIN OLD ANGRY MAN.

Jorge Mejia   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

not amazing , MacAgain is so out of touch with the real AMERICA that is pathetic. Of course he wants to invade countries. Of course he wants to continue wars. He's Dick's partner and 'brother'

Hopeful Floridian   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

his old and boring – period..... retire McCain, retire please!

Bama4Obama   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Don't see it happening...he sounds weak, and I'm getting VERY tired of the "my friends" schtick and his talking about what he did when dinosaurs walked the earth.

Denise   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

So help me God, somebody needs to tell him to cool it with the "my friends" crap. We don't need a friend. We need a LEADER. He comes across as phony and insincere to those of us whom the term FRIEND actually means something.

EJ (USA)   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Too late.

Marylou   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

SORRY Rick...McCain is CLOSING...his CAMPAIGN...stick a fork in him, he's DONE!

G   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

More angry I think this is what got him into this mess in the first place. I understand your point but it doesn't come off as real that he is so angry at Washington when he hires insiders from Washington to run his campaign. These voters in the town hall are smart voters and they will see right through this fake anger.

Shilpi Chaudhry   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

And that would contradict everything he has said and done, well with McCain being so confused about everything, that wouldn't be surprising anyway,

Jane   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

In your dreams...

Auburn Fan   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

McCain may be a maverick but his demeanor is that of a "cool hand luke". He's not going to kick and scream. He's more poised than that,. His military training at work. God bless him.

Diane Dagenais Turbide   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

He can try but he does not come out as being authentic every time he tries!

California Democrat   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Dee, Topeka   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Too late. He blew it...just like we knew he would. He's history.

The Lady   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

I am sorry but 30 minutes is not enough time for McCain to convince the voters that he is the right personl. A little to late.

Lisa   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

McCain is stuck on his POW experience.

saint paul mn   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

he can not be stronger, HE SIMPLY IS NOT,
HE IS STUCK IN THE PAST

MY FRIENDS THIS IS 2008

HE SOUNDS LIKE HE IS ABOUT TO HAVE A HEART ATTACK I CAN HEAR HIM BREATHING

WHAT IS HE TALKING ABOUT?

SORRY SANCHEZ, YOUR CANDIDATE DO NOT HAVE THAT. ALL HE HAS IS "MAVERICKING" TALK WHICH IS PAST AND DOES NOT HELP HIM.

MaryJane   October 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

How dare he call Senator Obama, "that one!" Downright rude.

Wathcful Enthusiast........   October 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Closing the debate strong is not the point. Making sensible points without adequate preparation is the main point.... That is what will be remembered after this debate.......

Duop Chak, Colorado Springs, Colorado   October 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

It has to be a well-constructed approach.

Christine El Paso   October 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

He can't relate. That's why

Lissa in Montreal   October 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

He does. He needs to talk about McCain, not attack Obama. All he's doing is attacking and that doesn't make the voters happy...

denise from texas   October 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Mccain is not ready to be president.............

Ade   October 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

In other words..... McSame is getting his clock cleaned, eh, Leslie??

Fabian   October 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Mccain will do it. Obama needs to be carried out on a stretcher.

Tara, Seattle   October 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

He just looks angry period. He also is really cynical and doesn't give the appearance of a good leader. He just said "requires a cool hand at the tiller"....he is anything but a cool hand, in fact that pretty much describes Obama.

Tiaunia - DALLAS, TEXAS   October 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

stop closing out the articles!

IN ADDITION.... I hardly understand what "My Friend" McCain is talking about...he is not connecting with me. We are not his friends!!!

SOUTHERN HOTTIE   October 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

NO, HE NEEDS TO STOP GASPING FOR AIR!

I ACTUALLY FEEL SORRY FOR THIS OLD LIAR AND WARMONGER.

Rachielle from VA   October 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

sorry leslie, but even if he did that, his anger would be widely viewed as "fake". he's no different from bush at ALL. thats why he'll never answer the question "what makes your policies different from bush's". he's not convincing me at ALL. he keeps repeating what we need to do but isn't offering ANY solutions!!!

dustin   October 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

unless Obama ends this with a "cracker" comment, its 2-0 obama

Elizabeth - TEXAS - Former Republican   October 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Leslie, aren't you sick of hearing My Friends? McCain can't lead and his VO choice is horrible.

Greggamma   October 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

McCain's military policy scares the Hell out of me. I want a diplomat not a warmonger!

Janice   October 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

"My friends" is not going to get it. McCain's comments about Obama's position on national security is not holding water. The generals asked for more troops at the outset of Iraq and now are asking for immediate support in Afghanistan which is where we should have been in the first place.

Summer   October 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Good Luck... I dont know if I can bare 30 minutes of his voice. God help us between him and Palin we are screwed!

kath   October 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

John McCain just said he would bring the troops home in honor and Obama would have in defeat....but there would be alot more coming home McCain.

phorse   October 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Well, he got the anger part anyway..

JT from TN   October 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

California Gold   October 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

What's funny is you can tell men in the gallery were required to wear coat and ties. Most of these men look like they are attending their rich grandfather's funeral.

Then again, McCain's campaign is on a death watch so I suppose it's appropriate.

smart   October 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Um, Mr. McCain - you said you're going to hire the smartest folks in America to look into our system failures...but Mr. Obama *is* one of the smartest in America....Harvard Law , editor of the Harvard Law review, and *taught constitutional law* at U. Chicago, duh?

chris ramirez   October 7th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

He's not going to do it if he keeps going after Obama. I'm not a McCain supporter but I was expecting him to bring the people together and relate, like he usually does in townhalls.

Reg   October 7th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

No way is McCain the person to clean this mess up.

Will   October 7th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Give him a break. He's 72 it's waaay past his bedtime.
