A McCain ad calls Obama 'not presidential.
A McCain ad calls Obama 'not presidential.

(CNN) – John McCain launched a new television ad Wednesday morning that calls Barack Obama flat-out 'not presidential,' hours after the two men squared off in a presidential debate that notably lacked few pointed jabs from either candidate.

The 30-second spot also continues the McCain campaigns newest line of attack against the Democratic presidential candidate, asking "Who is Barack Obama?"

Watch: New Mccain aide calls Obama unpresidential

“The National Journal says he’s the Senate’s most liberal," the ad's narrator says. "How extreme. But when pressed, how does he defend himself?"

Fact check: Is Obama the most liberal senator?

"They’re not telling the truth," Obama is shown saying in a television interview. "I hate to say that people are lying, but here’s a situation where folks are lying."

"Mr. Obama, we all know the truth…Not presidential," the ad's narrator responds.

The campaign says the ad will air nationally, though the extent of the buy remains unclear.

I Obama is not presidential I will take not presidential over a grumpy OLD man!

Interesting   October 8th, 2008 10:49 am ET

McCain…Obama looked 10 times more Presidential than you did last night. Have you seen the CNN Debate Polls? He walked circles around you and this was supposed to be your forum – a town hall.

You have the nerve to still continue with the negative ads. This election is over. You lost!

dobie520   October 8th, 2008 10:49 am ET

It is funny that McCain presses on character and being a maverick.

If this is his character, he can keep it. I do not want a leader who when the pressure gets tough turns into a little baby. I have seen kids in school act more mature than this campaign.

As far as being a maverick. This tatic is straight out of the Karl Rove manuel of running an election. He should know, they did it to him. He is not a maverick. It is same game different name. His running mate is not different. Though times call for bush league tatics.

You two have pushed an independent voter to the blue side. No doubt.

Morgan   October 8th, 2008 10:49 am ET

Obama sure looked more Presidential last night than McCain. Not bad for being "that one."

Luther, PA   October 8th, 2008 10:49 am ET

Sen. Obama sure appeared to me to be more Presidential last night. I thiink his answers had more substance with more appeal than Sen. McCain's. My impression was that McCain's answers were less than vague, such as him saying "We'll fix it." I believe we are looking for more specific steps that are involved with the "fix." I don't know if that was a result of Obama's detailed answers as compared with McCain's bland answers though. I do know to me Obama looked to be the President that I invision when think of who I'd want to be in the office.

Bigbubba   October 8th, 2008 10:49 am ET

Not Presidential????? This from a guy who points at his Opponent and says "That one". He may as well have been saying "The black guy" Take another look at the video. All McCain needs is a white sheet and he is ready to meet his constituents.

meron   October 8th, 2008 10:49 am ET

Mccain should be ashamed of himself. That is all he got. Smears, talk trash. He had a chance last night on the debate to look presidential and be specific on the issue and he blew it. He does not get it. He looks angrier than ever bc he is loosing this election. Too bad!!!!

Doh!   October 8th, 2008 10:49 am ET

THAT ONE for PRESIDENT!!!!!!

AJ   October 8th, 2008 10:49 am ET

tesy   October 8th, 2008 10:49 am ET

They are so deperate. I hope Senator Obama camp highlights McCain's performance in the debate of last night fro not being presidential such (1) " for not shaking hands with Senator Obama", (2) calling him "that One", (3) changing his policy on freeze spending by contradicting himself to buying the mortgages from banks, how ridiculous.

Kelly   October 8th, 2008 10:49 am ET

Obama is a great speaker and nice guy, but that's not what makes a great president. He could be a great president in the future after a little experience in foreign affairs and other areas. Also, I believe his connections in Chicago make him tainted and especially his wealthy friends who are funding his campaign make him indebted to them for favors in the future. I'm an independent who is voting for McCain/Palin because I trust them to keep us safe and not spend unnecessary funds on special projects close to their hearts. Also, is Mrs. McCain going to be a guest on your network?? Michelle Obama is a wonderful person and wife, but no experience running a corporation or in politics. She's good friends with Oprah and that makes her a popular guest? I feel your network is slanted and isn't covering this election in a fair manner. WAKEUP and smell the coffee…OBAMA isn't the way to go for this presidential election. He'll make a terrific president in a few years not this election. VOTE MCCAIN/PALIN.

Had Hillary won the nomination, she would have been the most liberal senator. Senator Obama is not a liberal. Senator Feingold from Wisconsin and Senator Sanders from Vermont, those are liberal senators. Merriam Webster defines liberal as "suitable for a freeman, generous; not narrow in opinion or judgment; tolerant." I am a liberal and proud of it. Liberals are not evil, at least none of the liberals at my Methodist Church are.

Mary   October 8th, 2008 10:48 am ET

Ok that ad is a waste of money and quite stupid. Judging from watching the debates, McCain is the one who ppl are saying doesn't look or act Presidential. How pathetic!

cjsk   October 8th, 2008 10:48 am ET

McCain has nothing to but negative things going for him right now. He and Palin can only try to win this election by bringing up lies that will not only work for him.

Poor Mccain, Sarah Palin said Obama wished he hadn't picked Biden. I would like to know what she thinks now and what McSame is thinking about his desperate dumb pick. So who is presidential? Palin? what a joke McCain has become!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Virginia   October 8th, 2008 10:48 am ET

I really wish John McCain would stop saying "My Friends" when he is addressing crowds or a television audience. I found myself yelling at the TV last night "I'm NOT your friend!!" everytime he said it. So annoying.

Veterans 4 Obama   October 8th, 2008 10:48 am ET

Does McCain not watch himself at the debate afterwards – you know – so he can do better next time?

Does McCain not see himself in a mirror?

Nimi from NY   October 8th, 2008 10:48 am ET

I don't know which choir McCain is singing to. We have watched Obama grow into being and looking presidential while the opposit can be said of McCain.

Obama / Biden … landslide 2008.

KJL   October 8th, 2008 10:47 am ET

Is a shuffling old man who repeats himself, can't stop talking about the Vietnam war, and chooses an unvetted running-mate McCain's idea of "presidential"?

Sounds like McCain is a racist, something we don't need in this society.

Will from NYC   October 8th, 2008 10:47 am ET

OMG just the opposite…. next the GOP will tell me the sky is red.

Jatovi, NC   October 8th, 2008 10:47 am ET

Until the McCain camp can say how they will differ from Bush, I don't care to hear from them. In the debate last night McCain himself said he'd keep the same tax cuts in place that Bush has placed in. So once again, until the McCain camp can say how they will differ from Bush, I don't care to hear from them.

John   October 8th, 2008 10:47 am ET

How pathetic. Is this what John McCain is down to ? Grade school name calling ? An honorable man would concede at this point. Just go home McCain , try to save a little dignity if you still can.

jeremy - tx   October 8th, 2008 10:47 am ET

Here's most likely what's being said in the McCain campaign strategy meetings right now…

"My friends… whatever the majority of the United States is saying about us… let's turn it around and say it about the Obama campaign. Surely the American people aren't smart enough to pick up on it, my friends… (pause) my friends…"

Unfortunately for Mr. McCain, Americans are far less dense than his running mate.

Annonymus   October 8th, 2008 10:47 am ET

This is a sign of desperation on McCain's organization and himself.

All those who read this comment should realise that the republican candidate and his organization is not in caotic mode.

Do you really want such a person as your president?

Tony   October 8th, 2008 10:47 am ET

Obama is 2 for 2 in the debates. The swing states are leaning his way, he is up in New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Florida, New Mexico, Michigan, etc.etc.

When someone like McCain and Palin have no records of their own to run on they resort, as the republicans always do, to lying, distorting, accusing and attacking.

That is a reflection of how badly Mccain and Palin are doing. America is finally waking up just in time to pull back the curtain on these two jokers adn see them for exactly who they are and most don't like what they see. McCasin is drowning in quicksand and Palin pulls him down deepr and deeper every day.

luvamerica   October 8th, 2008 10:47 am ET

Yes, Obama won and McCain is in denial, so he has no other choice but to make this add. Mccain is so negative and desperate. Obama done an excellent job last night. McCain did not even want to shake hands with Obama and that alone is sad.

Marc   October 8th, 2008 10:47 am ET

I'm not for many of Obama's plans for our country but to say he's not "presidential" seems incorrect, and pointless. Whether you like him or not, he exhibits leadership qualities necessary in a President. McCain needs to change strategy.

EDW   October 8th, 2008 10:47 am ET

Obama was absolutely presidential. I really like the fact that he understands that health care should be a right. Canada has health care for everybody. The American people should have a RIGHT to have health care.

Palin lied about earmarks, status of the Alaskan NG pipeline, state agency reports on the health of polar bears, Ayers, tax cuts, and salary cuts. She even lied about using a teleprompter when the teleprompter was visible to the media! How stupid can you get?

A McCain/Palin ad even claimed that FactCheck.org calling Obama's attacks on Palin "completely false" and "misleading" when Factcheck.org disputed anonymous e-mail falsehoods and bogus claims about Palin posted around the Internet. Factcheck.org never attributed any of it to Obama or his campaign.

The astonish fact is: Palin is still making the same claims that newspapers and TV anchors have already refuted! Is she tone-deaf?

Kathie, Houston TX   October 8th, 2008 10:46 am ET

McCain is nothng but an angry old man who finally realized by conceding to Bush when he first ran for president he threw away his chances. He is no maverick, has lost touch with the american people and frankly he just needs to go home (if he can remember where his one of many houses are)

jaye   October 8th, 2008 10:46 am ET

The McCain campaign is seriously desperate. He and Palin are seriously going down the wrong path in trying to tie Senator Obama to terrorist.
I hope the secret service is keeping a tight reign on Senator Obama's security – all the race and terrorist baiting from McCain and Palin could have serious consequences from one of palin's joe six packs.

Bart, Terre Haute, IN   October 8th, 2008 10:46 am ET

Ummm…'Not Presidential' is the best the McCain camp can come up with? Wow. There are legitimate lines of attack that can be used against Senator Obama, but the McCain camp has routinely forgone them for inconsequencial attacks like this.

Both candidates have run their fair share of negative ads, but I've counted more positive ones from Obama's camp. I can't remember the last positive ad that McCain ran. We want to hear what you're going to do, not how bad you think the other guy is.

McCain, at this point, reminds me of John Kerry, actually. "Vote for me, because he's awful, I'm not him, and I'm a Vet!"

Come on, McCain. Let's see some answers instead of attacks.

it's sad, the mccain campaign has zero substance to run on. how far from the issues will you go? This ad is not changing anybody's mind. Just like the filth where you try to put 'obama' and 'terrorist' in the same statement. all you're doing is inciting an angry base of people who already are going to vote republican. all you're doing is inciting hatred. all you're doing is dividing the country. please, for the love of our country, show a little respect for your fellow senator.

Elaine B   October 8th, 2008 10:46 am ET

The most telling moment in this debate was when McCain refused to shake Obama's hand after spending 90 minutes on a stage with him. If he can't acknowledge an opponent's worth, how in the heck will he "reach across the aisle" to get things done? The man just doesn't get it.

What is very shocking for Mcain, is during the whole debate, he said I quote"I KNOW HOW TO DO IT " IN EVERY ISSUE, BUT HE NEVER TELLS THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HOW HE WILL DO IT.
People are not stupid, they know who is presidential and who is not.
It is true they will become more nastier as the election get closer, but God is in control. They also forgot that Obama represent a movement.

As a Hillary supporter I still have issues with Obama but having closely watched McCain and Palin over the last month . . . has put me squarely in Obama's camp.

Quite frankly, I think McCain is erratic and likely is still mentally in a cell at the Hanoi Hilton, and Palin is not fit for any federal office short of House.

Real Talk   October 8th, 2008 10:45 am ET

His ads are hilarious. He acts like a child after the debate and refers to Obama as "That One" and then proceeds to say Obama is not presidential. What makes this even funnier is the fact that he has either lost both debates or lost one and tied one at best. The American people dont need your opinion right now John. Actions speek louder than words, and your actions are saying your a sore loser.

jay nyc   October 8th, 2008 10:45 am ET

Obama is clearly the most INTELLIGENT and articulate Presidential candidate Americans seen in decades. Finally a President with Harvard credentials (yeah, I said Harvard, and not a “C” average – I don’t want Joe 6 pack for President…lol) Watching him debate someone almost 30 years his senior with intellectual superiority is why education is so important in America. This is the type of person who IS prepared to lead our country and who children will look up to. OBAMA/BIDEN 2008!

Hongli.   October 8th, 2008 10:45 am ET

John McCain can throw the entire sink at Obama and he will not win the White House. The lack of common sense,arrogance,self-praise,old age,bad judgement and hatred has cost John McCain the White House. It is over, and John McCain knows it and that is why Americans are seeing so much of hidden hatred gushing from his mouth.I'll say it again,"it's not what goes into a man that defiles him,it's what comes out."

Dave Fiandt   October 8th, 2008 10:45 am ET

Obviously the McCain camp has not been paying attention to the debates. There is no question that Obama knows what he is talking about; has better command of what is going on (both internationally and domestically); and whose judgement on many issues (most notebably Iraq & choice of who is a "heartbeat away" etc).

McCain appears more erratic as the campaign progresses.

Shelly   October 8th, 2008 10:45 am ET

Senator McCain is the least presidential person I've seen in a while. His "win at all cost" attitude and tactics are sad and very unappealing. He picks one of the most unqualified VP running mate imaginable and out of the other side of his mouth claims he always puts country first.

John McCain comes across angry and grumpy and that is when he is dealing with Obama, a fellow American. Imagine how he would interact with a foreign head of state he doesn't like!

Oh my goodness, the McCain campaign is really poorly using paradox in desperation to win this! While all of my contemporaries and I are saddened by this once-good man's most venomous campaign, his exceedingly un-presidential demeanor, and his apparent liberal use of deception, he accuses Senator Obama of all of these things. It is sad when he and his wicked, yes wicked, running mate have to stoop so low to beg the lowest common denominator to possibly not see through their ruse and vote for them. Obama/Biden 08!

A-Man   October 8th, 2008 10:45 am ET

AND also someone needs to tell McCain that you do not win a war by leaving a country. You do not win until you leave the country. And infact you do not win unless you avoid it all together. Objectives have been accomplished, now to inact a plan to transition over the country is the way to end and win this war in Iraq.

RDS   October 8th, 2008 10:45 am ET

Top10 dumbest ads of all time! You only have to go to the many fact checking sites to see that McCain and his sidekick have been constantly lying…moving on! If he thinks that ad is going to persuade anybody beyond his staff members its really going down hill.

Amy from Michigan   October 8th, 2008 10:45 am ET

I just watched the ad on youtube.com, and I think John McCain should ask for his money back! If I hadn't read the CNN article, I wouldn't even know what it is about…….

As for whether Senator Obama is liberal or not, I say, "Thank God he's liberal!" A liberal is described in the dictionary as:
-favorable to progress or reform, as in political affairs
-a political party advocating measures of progressive political reform
-favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible, esp. as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental protection of civil liberties.
-free from prejudice or bigotry
-open-minded or tolerant

Isn't this just what we're looking for in Washington these days?

DianneATL   October 8th, 2008 10:45 am ET

Reality Check. Those who actually watched the debate scored virtually every "good " category in Obama's favor, with McCain winning the vote for "most like a typical politician". A president would not refer to an opponent as "THAT ONE". A president would have picked a running mate who could lead a nation. A president would have outlined cogent thoughts. McCain is not presidential, he is an angry old man out to fulfill his life's ambition at our expense, and to settle some convoluted score in his head regarding Viet Nam. I urge everyone to VOTE SMART.

It was pretty clear in Palin's "he's not like us" propoganda, that she has an un-American agenda, of which we should be wary . Palin will crash McCain's plane. AGAIN.

Marianne   October 8th, 2008 10:44 am ET

I don't know if it's just me, but everything I hear coming out of McCain or Palin's mouth (I truly feel it is ONE mouth that feeds the two of them)….is what people are saying about THEM. They should both stand in front of a mirror and spout off whatever it is they have to throw at us….because….I keep thinking what I hear is that they are talking about themselves to themselves. What a poor state of affairs! Was it Abbott and Costello who said:"Fine mess you got us into this time, Ollie"…LOL – You decide who's Abbott or Costello…

McCain is NOT PRESIDENTIAL and this ad is all about him NOT OBAMA…..just go back and look at ALL campaigning. Obama remains calm and like JFK, fighting for his country, fighting for you and for me!

Debbie   October 8th, 2008 10:44 am ET

I guess McCain didn't pay attention during the debate.

McCain was the one who did not look presidential when Obama was talking. While Obama was talking, Senator McCain crossed his arms, paced, and even turned his back.
On the other hand, Obama was paying attention and watching when John was talking.

After the debate, instead of talking with the people, McCain quickly left.
On the other hand, Obama stayed around and was talking with voters.

A president is supposed to pay attention and listen. Through two debates, that person has been Obama.

Jen   October 8th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Sorry, John McCain you are not presidential material. Your disposition is not worthy of a president. Your personna is so rude and disrespectful. Too many flasehoods you proclaim in speeches and ads.

Your choice of Palin was another bad decision. You did vote agianst the troops going to Lebanon and you where right once. Palin is a total embarrasement to professional women. Your biggest enemy is Palin because she will take you out if your elected. She is a very dangerous woman.

To be President you should be able to show respect to people. McCain, showed very little of that in the debate. I was appalled that McCain refused to shake Obama's hand at the end of the debate, instead settling for a pat on the back, while looking the other way.

Very Presidential Senator McCain – NOT…

Jeff Brown   October 8th, 2008 10:44 am ET

What a joke… Grandpa Munster stalked around the stage like he had a load in his pants. He sputtered and spewed out lies, innuendo and half truths. Obama had him pinned every time he tried to manipulate the truth. Barack was poised, insightful and knew his material. This is a man who is indeed Presidential!

Traci, Oregon   October 8th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Who's running your campaign McCain……Rush Limbaugh?

uh huh.... sure   October 8th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Not presidential?! Give me a break, McCain! Odd how the MAJORITY of people in this country seem to disagree with you. Look at the polls to get the facts. It doesn't really matter which poll you look at nowadays because even the more conservative ones have Obama ahead. Good luck grasping at straws and trying to smear for the next three weeks. Your campaign and chances for the presidency are going down in flames!

Cathy   October 8th, 2008 10:44 am ET

I actually feel really bad for McCain. This man is a War Hero, for crying out loud – and he's just reducing himself by the day. I have stuck by Obama from day one, but I feel sorry for Senator McCain. I understand he truly wants the Presidency, but his age, unfortunately is not on his side. He looks so tired and acts so snippy, as if he needs a nap.
He is grasping at straws and that is a shame; He is too honorable a man.

joel halpern   October 8th, 2008 10:44 am ET

If Obama is not presidential, then what are you?

Chris   October 8th, 2008 10:44 am ET

That is a very un-Presidential statement to make.

OBAMA '08

Kim, Charlotte, NC   October 8th, 2008 10:43 am ET

McCain needs to give his donors back their money. Who is even listening to him anymore.

The ad is still not talking about the economy.

Laidetea   October 8th, 2008 10:43 am ET

This ad does not talk about the economy, oil crisis, nor housing trouble. This ad displays an emotional, irrational, angry old man whom is acting like a 3 year old toddler. This is obvious Americans that we can't afford a senior citizen to run our country.

Rob   October 8th, 2008 10:43 am ET

Nope, he's not presidential. Truth hurts, but I doubt the Obama koolaid drinkers will ever believe it.

Here's a fact for you – if Obama was running as a Republican, you can be dang sure his Ayers, Wright, and Reszko connections would have been front page news. You would have screamed and cried until he withdrew.

Thank goodness he's a Dem. He can keep his secrets and all you fools and the media will never explore it.

November 5th – Obama President
November 6th – Goodbye America – say hello to rampant unemployment, higher taxes for everyone making more than 40,000 a year, and no national security.

Jesse   October 8th, 2008 10:43 am ET

The irony is that all of these low blows just make Sen McCain look like the "unpresidential" one. What a shame to see him go so low. I used to admire the man so much. I expect a "Michael Richards Moment" any day now.

Bonnie in Hershey PA   October 8th, 2008 10:43 am ET

Quite a boring, uneventful 2nd debate, but I managed to stay awake. I was captured by the time following the debate as the candidates and their spouses mingled with the undecided voters. While Cindy the trophy wife hung behind her aging husband, Michelle was very noticeable in that she made a point to talk to as many (probably ALL)people as possible and not just a quick hello and a handshake; she actually held conversations of which the voters seemed very interested. The old guy and his wife disappeared from the scene within minutes, but when I turned off the set 10-15 minutes later, the Obamas were still having their pictures taken at the requests of many of the voters and holding conversations. That, "my friend" impressed me! P.S. I was undecided and am an independent 58 year old white woman.

Solomon, NY   October 8th, 2008 10:43 am ET

When all else fails, out come a barrage of low blows from the McCain campaign. This is the definition of desperate

THE 2008 REPTILIAN TICKET IS MCKEATING5 WHO TOOK 112K IN OFFICE AND AN ALASKAN GOV. THAT ABUSES THE POWER OF OFFICE. DOES AMERICA REALLY NEED TWO MORE CROOKED REPTILES IN THE HIGHEST OFFICES IN THE LAND? YOU DECIDE!   October 8th, 2008 10:43 am ET

Mr. Magoo finally speaking about a subject that Mr. Magoo is an expert on.

Mr. Magoo has not been presidential since he picked the bobble head with ovaries.

"That one" will go down as one of the best President's in history.

You are the national jock and Gidget is the national punchline both of whom will fade into obscurity when SNL goes into reruns!

Peggy   October 8th, 2008 10:43 am ET

Not Presidential? I would have said he sure looked it last night…seems like the American Public thought so too.

Patrick   October 8th, 2008 10:43 am ET

What a joke.

Wendy   October 8th, 2008 10:43 am ET

"Not presidential"? I smell desperation.

So what is the definition of presidential? Is it hate mongering, mud slinging, condescension, behaving erratically and calling names or is it just having a pot belly and white hair?

I'll tell you what's "not presidential"….it's a politician who should know better trying to incite violence and fear in the US citizenry rather than focusing on the problems facing said citizenry….and using a big-mouthed hockey mom to do the dirty work.

Either he condones her behavior, or cannot control it. Either way, a bad thing.

Bruce   October 8th, 2008 10:43 am ET

This is too bad that a man like Mccain used to be can stoop to this type of campaign.
To be honest last night he did not look presidential at all..he could not look anyine in th face without his eyes darting aroaund…a sign of lying, also he need to understand that I am not "his friend"

Tommy   October 8th, 2008 10:43 am ET

Not presidential? That is a joke, right? McCain is the one who is not presidential. He is too old to be anything but a retiree! Did you see him shuffling his feet trying to walk during the debate? Someone should have given him a walker! A couple of times he was just wandering around on the stage like he didn't know where he was. And after the debate when Obama was still out shaking hands with the audience, where was JMc? It was like he had to rush off to take a nap after such a stressful event. And he thinks he's presidential? I think not.

randy   October 8th, 2008 10:43 am ET

With John McCain's temper, I wonder what new low he will sink to next.

cool onlooker   October 8th, 2008 10:43 am ET

When the loser is running out of time, this is what he can do the best.

American people are not that gullible. Their judgment and sense is right on and lifting up everyday. Who is more decently presidential, who picks the more knowledgable running mate, who is answering questions more directly, who carries more hope for future America, who has less enemies on the world stage… enough is enough.

McSame better not waste too much $ on attacking ads like this. It won't work any more. Otherwise, what's the point to "rightfully suspend" the campaign and deal with $ crisis?

Obama/Biden '08

Rebecca   October 8th, 2008 10:43 am ET

It is becoming increasingly difficult to understand the McCain campaign. This ad is just wishful thinking. I feel sorry for Sen. McCain, but he did bring this on himself. He lost credibility when he selected Ms. Palin. He seems to have no grasp of economic and his policies do not appeal to the general public. This man should be ashamed of his current campaign!!

Mccain is a liar   October 8th, 2008 10:43 am ET

More pathetic lie's and distractions.

CNN I would just like to say thank you for the fact checking you are doing every day, it seems the campaign's have paid attention and most of what they said last night if not all seemed to be true, probably because they are seeing how extensively you go over the facts on your news channel. Thank you again for weeding out the lie's and spins, the country cannot afford to vote based on lies this coming November.

The Stallion & The Champ vs. The Relic and Moose Poop   October 8th, 2008 10:43 am ET

Grampy's lyin' as he breathes before the debate glow has left his sorry, deplorable, grimacing face. What a pathetic excuse for a president he would be … And who thought anyone could be more detestable than Bush? With the help of Failin' Palin and her empty head and conscience, we would have the biggest pair of stooges to every occupy the White House.

jaye   October 8th, 2008 10:42 am ET

John McCain just dosen't get it…. he stumbles and stammers around, and his horrible attack ad's are turning people off.
Anyway, Sara Palin is treading on dangerous territory – she is trying to paint Senator Obama as a terrorist (in her folksy way) and is riling up her supporters at her speaking events. Is she baiting one of her "joe six-packs" into taking aim at Senator Obama with a loaded rifle?
I'm beginning to think she and McCain will stop at nothing to win this election.

BOOTSTOMPER   October 8th, 2008 10:42 am ET

Please send McCain back to Arizona and Palin back to her igloo.

I hate to say this but, if he were not a black man this ad would not be running. Bill Clinton said the same type of thing while campaigning for Hillary and he lost alot of respect. Not sexist, but racist!!!

Greg in MN   October 8th, 2008 10:42 am ET

Funny, he looks and sounds presidential to me.

Isn't it funny how every candidate on the Dem side is always "the most liberal"?

I've got news for you McCain…being called a "conservative" right now isn't such a good thing. That brand is not flying off the shelves.

Interesting… considering even BOTH CNN Republican strategist (Castellanos AND Sanchez) said he was "Presidential"…

John   October 8th, 2008 10:41 am ET

You know, calling Obama out for what he is isn't desperate, folks. He has legitamate ties to some very questionable people. He is so inexperienced. How would you like your 401k managed by a newbie? Honestly…

Part of me wants to root for Obama so you all have your way… then someone will have to come in and clean up the mess just like Reagan did after Jimmy Carter. However, the stakes are way too high.

A-Man   October 8th, 2008 10:41 am ET

FELLOW REPUBLICANS help send a message to our party and send McCain and Palin packing. No way no how is Palin going to look to lead our party. Lets vote Democratic and send them packing. As a person who has always respected McCain I believed it was people behind the scenes making the pathetic smear ads and what crap pours out of Palins' mouth. After watching the debate and noting how McCain told lies only when he went second to the point Obama had to basicaly call a time out because he was sick of it to again correct the record, I now see this is not just the work of behind the scenes people. I truly believe my dear McCain has lost his morals due to Cindy. Mitchell Obama is polite and stays clear of the crap, but every time you see Cindy speak she puts down Michell, or Obama's character. I think Cindy is evil and has corrupted the good McCain.
ALSO one thing that really bothered me was how McCain said he voted against alternative energy so many times due to the add ons. This would be noble but these same add ons are in all the bills he did vote for, the big tax cuts, the defense bills etc so it just does not hold water. From the day McCain met Cindy he has been a worse person.

Irma in North Carolina   October 8th, 2008 10:41 am ET

Boy I think Mccain better wake up after last night. After the remark about that one. And that Mccain would not shake hands with Obama after the debate and how he took off right away. Obama stayed and mingled with the crowd, Obama drew points from that one.

Is this really the best we could do?

They have done NOTHING but dance around issues and avoid anything that could "hurt their chances".

We are screwing ourselves… We are in for four years of speeches diverting us from all of the mistakes that will be made, that is not change, it's sad.

Roy Arellano (San Antonio)   October 8th, 2008 10:41 am ET

I wonder if we can count on the state of Florida screwing up the elections for the country again this year? I wonder if they will send in independent teams to provide more oversight – they couldn't even get the primaries right – so whats makes anyone think the presidentail election won't have more problems. Not looking forward to another florida mess.

Maggie from Virginia   October 8th, 2008 10:41 am ET

Does anyone else find it so ironic that for a man who has video clip after video clip showing his flip flops and have almost every news media discredit the things he says on a daily basis, to insight riotous rhetoric on the campaign trail, for him to say anyone is "non-presidential" is a joke! I think Mr. McCain is pretending that no one can see him and that he's pulling the wool over everyone's eyes. Someone tell him "we can all see him" for what he is. A joke and Palin is the scariest person I have ever seen in politics. This woman needs to go back to Alaska and stay there. We don't need someone like her in our lives to tell us what we should and should not do. That's what OUR OWN mothers are for. And her mothering skills are obviously not there either!

Rudy NYC   October 8th, 2008 10:41 am ET

Bad timing after last night's debate performance. He lost….and now.

it is shamefull to see what John MAccain and Sarah Pallin are doing.
There is no sbustance in their ticket. When american want to hear how to better our lives, they resort to smearing President Obama.

If he is a terrorist, why don't you lock him in?

Just because he is successful, you become jealous about it!

It is just shameful…thank you Very Shameful

AMERICAN   October 8th, 2008 10:41 am ET

Hillary Clinton issued the following statement responding to tonight’s presidential debate:

"Tonight's debate proved once again that an Obama-Biden Administration will provide the fresh start America so desperately needs.

"The biggest risk for American families is four more years of the last eight years and mavericks in charge of the United States economy. Mavericks in Washington and on Wall Street got us into this mess.

"As we saw, Senator Obama displayed beyond a doubt that he understands both the gravity of the financial crisis facing America, and the challenges we face in Iraq and around the world. Senator McCain offered only more of the same failed policies of the Bush Administration. It's time for a change."

I enjoyed watching OBAMA smack down Mccain on EVERY issue…..

Mccain was trying to be funny ………………….not

I still can't figure out why the McCain camp continues to talk about taxes….Obama made a fool out of him………

"Mccain plan …….give everyone across the board 5000 tax credit
EVERYBODY…..that means the poor TEACHER who makes 50,000 will get the same TAX CREDIT as the CEO who makes 800,000. it make NO sense.

When McCain referred to Senator Obama as "that one" last night, I said to my wife that I couldn't believe that Senator McCain would refer to a professional peer in such a fashion. I didn't think it was a racial epithet; rather, I so it as good old fashioned disrespect.

Oh…and it wasn't very presidential either.

Not only is McPalin out of touch with America he is out of touch with his own campaign. This is actually scary. The only candidates who have even attempted to take the moral high ground and act stately are OBiden. Its tough to throw stones at petty dictators when you are petty yourself.

Glenn; North Carolina   October 8th, 2008 10:41 am ET

These are the final acts of a desperate campaign. Remember sports fans, only 27 more days remaining until the liberation of the country from the tyrrany of the current administration.

Obama is a joke, not a president. The number of times he said "aaaaaaaand" last night – in a drinking game we would all have been out by 9:30. We moved from the "uh" count to the "aaaaaaand" count of how many times he has to collect his thoughts. Pa-leeze.

Unfortunately, I don't think people care who the real Obama is. A lot of folks are just enamored with the guy, and could care less about the facts. It's actually pretty scary for those of us who have researched Obama and followed his ever changing campaign promises throughout this election year.

I'm just praying that if he wins, God will help us through the next 4 years.

Patricia in Ohio   October 8th, 2008 10:40 am ET

The pot is calling the kettle black. He is the one who left the debate and did not even want to socialize with the people that had the questions. But let McCain tell it town hall meetings are his strong suit. He proved that to be wrong last night. We all know who the better Presidential candidate is. Lets face it McCain it is time for the rocking chair. He left because he was tired and unable to show any Presidential affection towards the people there. Look at how long Barack and Michelle stayed. Where did McCain have to go? I think this was more important since he says he is the best man for the job.

Kenneth Texas   October 8th, 2008 10:39 am ET

McCain is toast and Palin is a joke.

Did anyone else notice that Senator Obama said that when he is President he will line out of the budget overspending in various areas? Does anyone know that there is not a 'line item veto' for the President?

I think he dropped a clue where the Democrats want to take the powers of the White House………we don't need the left wing in total power of this Country. We need a checks and balance and putting McCain in as President will do that.

Are you better off today than you were two years ago when the Democrats took over the majority in the Senate? NO!

Fred   October 8th, 2008 10:39 am ET

African Americans and minorities have been voting 100 percent for white greying men for all our history for President. Now, the racists complain that African Americans are voting 95 percent of the time for an African American. Don't you see the hypocrisy/ Why don't you point this out?

Rove, fool us….once….uhhhh…….uhhh…

McCain, with each of these attacks, you shame not only yourself, but all of us.

By opinion of you, Sen. McCain, has dropped so far it will never recover. I had thought you were a man of character. I guess that was not true at all.

What happened to "country first?" You are basically leading a mob-like campaign in which invokes violent thoughts (and perhaps actions) against the person who is most likely to be our next president.

For all your service, you will only be remembered by these attacks and how desparately you tried to win, leaving morals behind.

PA voter   October 8th, 2008 10:39 am ET

It's not presidential to refer to your opponent as "that one", Mr. McCain. If McCain can't even treat Obama with respect, how can we trust McCain to treat world leaders with respect? Does McCain have to agree 90% with another human being to give respect, like to George W. Bush?

MikeH   October 8th, 2008 10:39 am ET

McCain's ads are turning into self-inflicted wounds.

On the heels of the town-hall debate, where all the mainstreet Republican analysts (even Pat Buchanan!), said Obama was the most presidential, after his cockapoo-with-lipstick VP launches lies, McCain comes out with an ad so basackwards, that even his supporters know its wrong.

Dan, Baltimore   October 8th, 2008 10:39 am ET

What does that even mean "not presidential"? This is absolute garbage and a waste of our time.

Winnie in Montana   October 8th, 2008 10:38 am ET

McCain is the one who is not presidential and millions of people know this. Again, he shows he is out of touch and out of his mind. And Palin, don't even get me started on her "presidentiality". She is the least presidential candidate I have ever seen; she isn't even vice-presidential. God forbid, she's one heartbeat away.

I know exactly what who Mcsame is talking about, the thumb told the hold story and then came the mirror.

Mr. Eko   October 8th, 2008 10:38 am ET

So this ad has basically ZERO substantive information in it. Nothing about policy. Nothing about McCain's leadership.

Translation: "Obama is a radical liberal boogyman. I'm John McCain, and I approve this message."

Honor and integrity are foreign concepts to John McCain.

Jean   October 8th, 2008 10:38 am ET

Just because he can get 1st time voters and 95% of African Americans to vote for him might make him President but it won't make him Presidential or Ready To Lead.

How will your life be in 4 years with him in the White House?

Remember… yYour vote now will cost you the next 4 years.

RIF   October 8th, 2008 10:37 am ET

The problem is anyone with a brain, a set of eyes, and a set of ears would beg to differ. I even heard most conservative pundits say that Obama is appering to be more presidential than McCain.

If you don't like the McCain campaign strategy, wait until tomorrow. If McCain would handle this economy as erratic as he handles his campaign theni don't wont him anywhere near the oval office.

Novita   October 8th, 2008 10:37 am ET

What a desperate move!!!

Just because he didn't make a knockout last night, doesn't give him the reason to throw another dirt to the more competent person…

Now, I understand why business people love McCain, cause they have the same phylosophy in life. It's business, for the shake of my benefit, I forbid people to do all in the name of ethic and regulation, but when it comes to me…I am the exceptional, cause I am the base (he thought)….

Hooray! More sludge!

We have to put up with this for another month? Yeesh.

timmy   October 8th, 2008 10:36 am ET

MCCAIN IS RIGHT. OBAMA IS NOT READY TO BE PRESIDENT.
HE IS INEXPERIENCED AND NAIVE.

Hispanic for Obama   October 8th, 2008 10:36 am ET

But the question is how do we know when Obama says "they are not telling the truth" is in reference to that? It just as well could of been regarding McCain's lies about Obama's tax plans. Nothing more than easy audio editing.

Obama has looked a lot more presidential to me in these debates.

I'm sticking with Obama. Absentee ballot already sent it and for Obama. President for change.

Registered Republican   October 8th, 2008 10:36 am ET

I've been a registered Republican for almost 20 years now – but this will be my first time voting for a Democrat for President. The lies, deceit, and out-dated policies of the Republican party are simply too much for any patriot to ignore.

I hope that Republican leaders are listening – we demand change in the direction of the Republican party. Let's get back to truth and honesty, honor, and fiscal policies that will work.

I think anyone who is voting against Bush so often would be deemed liberal too, and at this point, that is a good thing.

Donna   October 8th, 2008 10:36 am ET

Sad, foolish and empty campaign. McCain has nothing to offer on policies. He has nothing to offer on temperament. He has nothing to offer on judgment–as best witnessed by his selection of Sarah Palin. And this–"my friends"–is why he is tanking in the polls.

Scott in Atlanta   October 8th, 2008 10:36 am ET

Who? You mean "That one" over there???

Barbara - 65 yr old white female in NC   October 8th, 2008 10:36 am ET

ha ha ha ha ha – from the man that has no diplomatic skills, no charisma, no intelligence

I'm for That One '08

Constitutional Scholar, Diplomatic Skills, Foreign Relations already on a firm footing

Hey McCain- Thanks but no thanks   October 8th, 2008 10:36 am ET

McCain you're pitiful… YOU WERE THE ONE THAT LOOKED UNPRESIDENTIAL AND SOUNDED IGNORANT!!!

The people have spoken– we can see through your lies and feasible debate strategy!

Alison B   October 8th, 2008 10:36 am ET

And what makes McCain feel that he looks presidential because he does not.

Last night he showed his true colors as the person he is when he said "that one"

Independent Voter   October 8th, 2008 10:35 am ET

McCain is getting hopelessly tacky now that we're in the final weeks.

Can't wait for this to be over…

Peg, Canada   October 8th, 2008 10:35 am ET

Well, there was only one person who looked and acted presidential last night in the debate and it certainly wasn't John McCain

LATINO PARA OBAMA!   October 8th, 2008 10:35 am ET

This just does not seem right. If one were to read the subliminal in this message it is really saying:

This man does not look like past presidents or have the upbringing of presidents past, hence he is not presidential.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Tom, KS   October 8th, 2008 10:35 am ET

What a Joke the McCain campaign has become. All they have left is accusation and innuendo.

mb--texas   October 8th, 2008 10:34 am ET

Has McCain looked in a mirror lately.Nothing but negative things coming from McCain/Palin mouths.

xxx   October 8th, 2008 10:34 am ET
