From

(CNN) – Conservative New York Times columnist David Brooks, who has expressed doubts about Sarah Palin’s readiness to serve as vice president, said this week the Alaska governor “represents a fatal cancer to the Republican Party.”

Brooks praised Palin’s debate performance and called her a natural political talent, but told a New York audience Monday that “experience matters”: “Do I think she’s ready to be president or vice president? No, she’s not even close to that,” he said.

“…Reagan had an immense faith in the power of ideas,” he also said, in remarks first reported by the Huffington Post. “But there has been a counter, more populist tradition, which is not only to scorn liberal ideas, but to scorn ideas entirely. And I'm afraid that Sarah Palin has those prejudices. I think President Bush has those prejudices."

Other prominent conservatives, including George Will and David Frum, have publicly questioned Palin's readiness to be vice president. Prominent conservative columnist Kathleen Parker, an early supporter, said late last month that recent interviews have shown the Alaska governor is "out of her league" and should leave the GOP presidential ticket for the good of the party.

Brooks himself has also written skeptically about Palin. "Sarah Palin has many virtues," he wrote in a recent column. "If you wanted someone to destroy a corrupt establishment, she'd be your woman. But the constructive act of governance is another matter. She has not been engaged in national issues, does not have a repertoire of historic patterns and, like President Bush, she seems to compensate for her lack of experience with brashness and excessive decisiveness."

You guys all think you are frustrated. I live in Alabama near Montomgery. I am stunned everyday by the number of McCain/Palin signs I see in so many yards. David Gergen (I hope I spelled that right) hit the nail on the head yesterday, when he said the issue is RACE. No one in their right unprejudiced mind could possibly vote for McPalin with a straight face.

If Obama wins I might have to move!!!!!

ONLY 27 MORE DAYS IN WHICH WE HAVE TO LISTEN TO MOOSE FLATULENCE FROM THE NEWLY CROWNED 2008 MISS MOOSE ANAL SPHINCTER(THE “FOLKSY“ TRANSLATION IS A$$WHOLE)!   October 8th, 2008 5:54 pm ET

Now, what’s her name has been relegated to the back pages of the political history book, where her only stated merit will that she freed Dan Quayle from the public humiliation he as had to endure. She is officially a bigger bobble head than he is.

The Reptilians should be proud that their campaign has been reduced to an iconic American punch line!

The Reptilians should just privately concede the election and do an honorable last month so they will live to fight another day. MAYBE they can regroup in time for 2012.

Continuing down the road the “Liar’s Express” is now traveling will only bring out the whole Keating 5 etc, and cause the Reptilians to lose any respect from middle America. Reptilians will not only be a laughing stock, but a dishonored laughing stock.

No political clout for decades.

But hey, what do I know.

I hated the Bush/Cheney policies, but you know what, those CRAZY terrorists deserve our best of the best LUNATIC Team, Bush/Cheney.

Trust me, Muslim extremists DO NOT deserve good treatments. I was watching the History Channel some times back, and when Turkey (Ottomon Empire was moderate Muslims) established its government, they got rid of Muslim extremists.

Ideas are what this American experiment is about.
Regardless who wins this election we have to get past the mindless hate that seems to run rampant in this country. One thing that Obama has done is energize a whole new generation of citizens to be voters.
We will be watching. The American people have been awakened and have discovered our power. We reject corruption. We embrace hope. We long to live in peace and prosperity. There are many in the world who would see us fail. Some even in this country. As Barack Obama has said, we stand in a stronger position to deal with threats if we stand together with our brothers throughout the world. We must lead by example, not by force. Create jobs through innovation and rebuild our crumbling infrastructure. Rebuild our health care system and schools. Make us once again the envy of the world and share our prosperity, freedom and peace.
We must reject hate. We must truly put "Country first". It's not a slogan, it's a way of life.
We are Americans above all else. We set for ourselves high goals and high expectations. We expect our leaders to be the BEST of our people. Don't let us down.

Sarah Palin is Obama's best friend.   October 8th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

She has helped him unite the democratic party.
She has helped him raise 10 million dollars.
He has made it clear that obama camp is a peace feast where you hear look to the future, yes we can!!! while McCain's camp is a terror feast.
Kill him!!! terrorist!!! heard in their rallies. The choice is clear either you have a childish instigator or a thoughtfull intelliegent able and capable young man.

Jane MN   October 8th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

Although the words sound rather harsh, I have to say that I completely agree. What Palin scares me the most is not her lacking of experience, but rather her extreme ignorance that drives her to do anything, no matter right or wrong, simply just to fulfill her own purpose. Based on what I have seen since the convention, how did she get elected as AK governor is really beyond me. Choosing Palin as VP truly shows McCain’s bad judgment.

Answer: "He's the guy whose ahead of you in every national poll and in most battleground states"

Sarah Palin has nerve throwing mud at anyone. She is sleeping with the man who was recently in an organization trying to get Alaska to secede from the United States! And she went and spoke at one of their meetings!!! How UNAMERICAN IS THAT??!!

Ridgeway   October 8th, 2008 5:52 pm ET

Yeah, real experience is needed like organizing fund raising through ACORN and other anti-American radical groups.
She's imminently more qualified than Obama the Black Muslim radical. Just being an decent Christian American makes her or anyone of her ilk more qualified than Hussein the Muslim pig.
He can be someone else's president, never mine.

themexcellentone@mac.com   October 8th, 2008 5:52 pm ET

It's pretty bad when people who are supporters of your own party who give thoughtful, insightful commentary on a regular basis to national media outlets think you're poison.

When will the rest of America wake up and realize that Palin is NOT the future of the GOP?

I am appalled that so many have been so blinded by this woman's folksy charisma and made-for-tv soundbites that they refuse to see what lies underneath–a vapid, ultraconservative shell of a woman who has absolutely no business governing anything.

Go back to the hockey rink and gossip and snipe with your hockey moms, Palin. It seems to be where you're most comfortable.

Paul   October 8th, 2008 5:52 pm ET

It is time for change

We need new leadership

We need someone to make our economy stronger

We need Obama-Biden in the White House

or are we willing to afford the Bush-McCain policies that have failed us all, just look at our economy…

Obama -Biden
Yes we will

The only real decision that McCain has had to make in the campaign, and it turns out to be a real stinker.

But Republicans are unlikely to listen. And its probably too late to do anything about it anyway. McCain can't replace her because he can't afford to admit to a serious mistake.

Hmm, let me see. Where have we seen that kind of stiff-necked belligerence before?

LongV   October 8th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

The same thing Obama as a cancer to the Democrats, but the media do no admit it? He has no epxerience and real-life records, but all talks.

Preco, NY   October 8th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

Conservative New York Times columnist David Brooks has this to say about Sarah Palin:
She “represents a fatal cancer to the Republican Party.”
“Do I think she’s ready to be president or vice president? No, she’s not even close to that,” he said.

And I have this to say about Sarah Palin:

She has destroyed what ever fabric of decency left to cover the shame the Republican party has become these past several years.

She and McCain will be confined to the Dustbin of History and great men and women will rise up again to rebuild the GOP.

God bless America.

conny   October 8th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

Rusty   October 8th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

God help us all if she becomes President. The best we can hope for is that someone decent and smart runs things behind her. Kind of like a 4-year-old Princess that suddenly becomes the Queen when her dad dies. No one expects the 4-year-old to run the country.

I am not qualified to be President and I'm much more qualified that she.

The GOP cancer is all those who are turning a blind eye to her incompetence and claiming she's qualified and who should know better. How can they sleep at night?

kendall   October 8th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

why isn't the Alaskan Sepratist Party and the link to Todd and Sarah not being scutinized, We have like 3 weeks before we vote and it has hit MS media. people at her rally's sound like what you'd hear from a Spike Lee joint 1890's movie about lynching blacks, only now they say kill em, instead of hang em.

Ahhhh what a relief to hear it said. If there was any hope of me accepting McCain, he trounced it when he picked Palin.

All politics aside, she does not represent positive, intelligent, successful women well. Women have tough when playing on the same field as men and winking and smiling like a pagent competitor doesn't help. The base coddles and encourages her, but they won't let her show what she is made of and speak to the press. I KNOW Pawlenty and Romney would be allowed to speak to the press unfiltered. It is sexist to do otherwise.

Nothing is fatal for the GOP. Once they break out the smear attacks, & fear tactics, America buys it!

Look at how quickly the polls are swinging. 2 days ago it was 50%-43%. Today it's 48%-44%. And this is after Obama clearly won the debate too!. Unbelievable.

Foxhole Atheist   October 8th, 2008 5:50 pm ET

Believe me. Shes not just a cancer to the republican party. She's a cancer to the people of Alaska, our counrty, and the rest of the planet.

She will leave the ticket. Of course she will say its because she needs to spend more time with her family. But she has no experience and she owe over 25K in back taxes. We know the real reason, and it has nothing to do with her family.

Billy   October 8th, 2008 5:50 pm ET

Well stated.

I've never seen such high ambition and low intellectual curiosity since, well, Bush.

Palin is dangerous to America and she is the death of the GOP. Sure, the fringe loves her but the other 80% of the GOP have abandoned her.

voice of reason   October 8th, 2008 5:49 pm ET

And who picked her to be a running mate?

Right, enough said.

There is this mis conception also that she is a reformer, that she'll be able to tackle and change corruption. How about evidence and facts contradicting that? In fact, it is she who had actually abused power.

Why was she picked anyway? Because McCain thought he could pander to Hilary's voters. That's all. It's all about winning.

senja   October 8th, 2008 5:49 pm ET

Thank you Mr. Brooks. I've been losing sleep. The possibility of Ms. Palin leader of the free world is terrifying.

Phoenix   October 8th, 2008 5:49 pm ET

I am willing to give anyone a chance, but Palin is hateful. I'm sorry, she lost me as a Republican when she gave that hate filled, speech during the Republican convention. She and McCain have yet to figure out that people are tired of being in attack mode. I just don't understand what they don't get about that.

former gop   October 8th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

She CHAMPIONS the brutal killing of wildlife and is fighting against saving polar bears – WHERE IS HER SOUL? I don't care what party you're from… PALIN IS A CANCER ON THE PLANET – PERIOD.

Annie, Atlanta   October 8th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

Does Sarah know she's conducting hate rallies? Or is she that unaware? Something tells me this woman is not that unaware. She knows how to manipulate a crowd. What happens, however, if someone gets hurt or worse, God forbid?

I support "That One," but I have to wonder if John McCain really wants to go down this road. If so, he doesn't qualify to even run for President.

Walter, FL   October 8th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

Mark   October 8th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

We can always send Palin to the Wrangell Mountains for a bath in the mud pots and mud volcanos. Then she can go to Chena Hot Springs and wash off. Afterwards she can shoot some wolves from a helicopter before she goes moose hunting.

Oh wait – she can't do that because nothing can clean her off while she's wallowing in the mud that she's flinging!

Anne E.   October 8th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

It's a relief to know some conservatives can see this woman for what she is — and isn't.
She will never be qualified to be the leader of this country, much less on the world stage.

And by the way McCain you served your country as POW many years ago, let it go already. It is great but that is not a reason for you to be the President.
All you said last night is that you can get the job done. HOW? Your reputation is going out the door.
So what if Obama has or hasn't took on his party, you haven't took on your campaign, your letting everyone take over you.

the Republicans and Democrats are a great fuse of perfection. It's like a Ying/Yang relationship. A perfect balance forms a circle. No one is right, but add a little bit of this here and there, and you have the greatest economy… see the 1990's

Mary Rynkiewicz   October 8th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

Sara Palin is not ready to lead and John McCain showed poor judgment in selecting her. I question her intelligence. I am merely nitpicking here but didn"t anyone notice that she repeatedly pronounced "nuclear" as "nucular" in her debate? She's another George Bush!!!

That is calling it like you see it. This person should have been on the McCain VP selection commitee. Unfortunately, McCain was thinking about how her credentials as a maverick and woman would get votes instead of selecting someone who could actually govern.

Judy Black   October 8th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

Sarah Palin doesn't have the knowledge or ability. If she were a man or ughly she wouldn't be running for VP. It's hard to believe the GOP doesn't have any other women with VP skills. I am a Republican and will not be voting for McCain. I have voted for him numerous times in the past.

Betty S.   October 8th, 2008 5:46 pm ET

I've seen in my neighborhood, where neither McCain nor Palin have tred, signs on muscle SUVs in camoflauge paint, "NOBAMA" with a swastika in the O. I don't know how a person who embraces hate-mongering can call themselves American. I cannot vote for a president/vice president who not only ignores but encourages and condones these behaviors in the citizens of our United States.
SHAME on the McCain ticket. Shame on them. Shame on those who listen to and heed these hurtful, and possibly life-threatening words. It is the most anti-American act of all.

–Obama is a breathe of fresh patriostism and will take us back into the status of benevolent power that is truly American. Barack Hussein Obama – be proud of your name, be proud of the service you bring to our country and world. –America for Obama!

Joyce in Florida   October 8th, 2008 5:46 pm ET

So right on David Brooks. Time for Governor Palin to go back to Alaska. The McCain/Palin ticket will not win this November. Sure, let her keep shooting her mouth off at the remaining rallies. It appears to me that she wants to instigate a riot somewhere. What's with that?!?!? Guess they are really desperate and will try ANYTHING.

Anyway, this Hillary Clinton supporter is going to vote for "that one".

OBAMA/BIDEN 08!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CARMIN   October 8th, 2008 5:46 pm ET

I feel that McCain who says country first wasnt putting country first when he picked Palin she is in over her head. And its like they are trying to keep us Americans off balance with the real issues by picking her we do need country first and I feel McCain right now knows its his only chance to become President not to help our country but to reach his finial goal no matter what it takes.

Gov Palin is out of her leauge and it shows. She is making Senator Obama out to be a terrorist but he is not. When someone at her rally yelled out kill him and terrorist she did not stop the person she wants people to doubt Senator Obama but it is working against Senator Mccain she should keep it up because it will make it easier for Senator Obama and Senator Biden to win. Which is what this country needs to help us survive this crsis. Thank you Gov Palin.

Rick   October 8th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

If Barack Hussein Mohammed Obama is qualified to be president then Sarah Palin is most certainly qualified to be vice-president.

Vic   October 8th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

Well, well, well!!! Since when did the turncoat David Brooks become an authority on who is and who is NOT fit to be a candidate for president or vice president. Look in newspaper archives and you'll see the mighty Brooks fawning all over George W. Bush and Dick Cheney when they ran in 2000 and 2004. So now he sets himself up as an authority on recognizing the perfect candidate. Tell you what Mr. Brooks. I see Sarah Palin so much the opposite as your descriptive pronouncement that if this INDEPENDENT had not already decided to vote for McCain/Palin, your column would have dealt the fatal blow to you, your newspaper, and the democratic party.

Kate   October 8th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

Mr. Brooks is 100% correct. The republicans have decided that intellect, intelligence, education, curiosity, creativity, and experience are worthless. I have never before seen anyone at this level sneer at higher education. McCain and Palin act as though there is something wrong with a person who has enough wherewithal to get an Ivy league education. My blood ran cold when a former secretary of education (Bill Bennett) spoke disparagingly of George Will as an "intellectual" that "maybe some people listen to." All I know is I wanted my son to get the best education possible, and all my life was told education is the cornerstone of any enlightened society.

Brian   October 8th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

Palin is a car wreck. Now their campaign is treating her like a cuckoo clock… only letting her out twice a day to chirp like a crazy person before hiding her away again.

And McCain is even worse. Just 12 hours after referring to Sen. Barack Obama as "that one" during the second presidential debate, he just called Americans his "fellow prisoners" today at a rally in Pennsylvania.

I think they're both a fatal cancer! You betcha they are.

Sarah Palin does not actually have a thought of her own in her head. She admonishes Obama for sitting on a board with Ayres who was a domestic terrorist 40 years ago, while she is married to a man who recently belong to an organization wishing to succeed for the US. What a hypocrite. She incites people to shout out "kill him" and hos no appology for her behavior. The Secret Service should arrest her.

bibi   October 8th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

The only way the gop can stand a change is to drop her and bring on Romney. I hope they don't though!

Richard Hohn   October 8th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

Sarah Palin is a political pawn, a product of our times created through strange bedfellow relationship between the Christian Right and so-called new conservative corporate criminals that actually run the Republican Party. She offers the myopic, lemming-like supporters of the right a candidate that they can relate to on both an theological and intellectual level. Many believe her competence level is just right…she is smart enough to learn what to say and her motivation to promote the tenets of her faith make her willing to say or do anything to spread the word. But, I see more. In Sarah Palin I see a megalomaniac akin to the Lonesome Rhodes character in "A Face in the Crowd". She just may be a fierce political fiend that is hiding her true aspirations behind a wholesome and homespun facade and waiting to lead the next crusade.

kate   October 8th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

Does he believe Obama is ready? I don't!
Palin has been a Mayor and a Govenor
She has had to balance a budget, create jobs, maintain jobs, and answer to her constituents

What has Obama done? He's written two books about himself WOW!
What legislation has he been responsible for,? none.
I'm a working mom with two kids and am inspired by Palins spirit, energy and intellect.
Did you see the debate between Obama and McCain?
Palin has more energy then the two of them combined.
Maybe she'll actually do something in Washington and not just talk about it.

This is not only hurting the Republicans, but the focus on the American People.

Their are so many other respectable Female Republicans, that could have been on the ticket, but for someone to put a person at the lowest end of the chain of human interaction, is just affirming that judgment is far from being sound.

This is the 21st century, not the 16th century!

With the information age, and educated individuals willingness to research the candidates(from all parties) on their track records is at their finger tips!

Distractions, Deceptions, Lies, and Especially Character Smear in as using the Race cards, only demeans those representing the context of ads or verbal attacks.

Remember one thing everybody and everything knowledge of all candidates, Obama, Biden, McCain, Palin, et al are out there to take to task, in very minute detail.

Yaaeeh the cancer that destroys people, that separates people, that shows how much anger and racisism exists in the McCain and Palin campaign. Republicans are a disgrace to the American people!

Brendose, Oceanside CA   October 8th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

Funny…….even the Republicans get it.

Why can't McCain???

Sarah was a bad pick. She's not a maverick……not even close. She governs over a population 3 times smaller than Los Angeles.

Who do you think you were fooling John??

lisa   October 8th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

EXactly!!!!!!!Palin needs to go back to Alaska …….What a joke that she is mccains vp……She makes me very disappointed as a women in how she is making us look as a nation (wink).

Tanya   October 8th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

Experience matters, of course. However, personalty matters just as much.
Sara Palin is nasty, mean-spirited person, aggressive just for the sake of aggression.
And, by the way, she is not running for VP. She is running for President. Not in 2012 or 2016 BUT NOW! Don't know if McCain realized it already…

Diane Panama City Fl   October 8th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

Sarah Palin is not only a 'fatal cancer" to the Rethuglian Party, she is a seditionist that incites violence toward the other candidate in this presidential race. Perhaps Todd's and her affiliation with the extreme-right secessionist party in Alaska is closer than they let on. And, perhaps an FBI or Secret Service investigation into her campaign trail antics should be launched. She sounds just like Adolph Hitler, except she wears lipstick. Someone needs to slap an muzzle on that stupid cow now!!!!

Brent   October 8th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

It was written in the New York-Obama Times. Enough Said.

tws1906   October 8th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

She is a cancer for which there is no cure or treatment.

Gia in Los Angeles, CA   October 8th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

Good news!

Our country REALLY needs Obama right now. November 4th can't come soon enough for me! (then January 20th will be the next target date!!)

Go Obama/Biden '08!!

Joe B   October 8th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

New York Times Conservative???? Please!!!!!

Paula   October 8th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

Amen! Every time I hear her speak or read her comments, there is a renewed visceral reaction of pure disbelief! What was McCain thinking!!

jason, tx   October 8th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

Yup. She's an idiot.

NEVER OBAMA   October 8th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

You fool. She's doing what she's suppose to be doing…..attacking the other side.
You are one of those disgusting little men that doesn't have a clue to what this woman could accomplish.
She will make a great VP and when John McCain leaves office she would make a Great President.
This woman is smart…..very smart and she has a pure heart. She would not fail.
I pity you.

Becky CA   October 8th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

He also said this about Obama as an intellect:

Obama has the great intellect. I was interviewing Obama a couple years ago, and I'm getting nowhere with the interview, it's late in the night, he's on the phone, walking off the Senate floor, he's cranky. Out of the blue I say, 'Ever read a guy named Reinhold Niebuhr?' And he says, 'Yeah.' So i say, 'What did Niebuhr mean to you?' For the next 20 minutes, he gave me a perfect description of Reinhold Niebuhr's thought, which is a very subtle thought process based on the idea that you have to use power while it corrupts you. And I was dazzled, I felt the tingle up my knee as Chris Matthews would say.

And the other thing that does separate Obama from just a pure intellectual: he has tremendous powers of social perception. And this is why he's a politician, not an academic. A couple of years ago, I was writing columns attacking the Republican congress for spending too much money. And I throw in a few sentences attacking the Democrats to make myself feel better. And one morning I get an email from Obama saying, 'David, if you wanna attack us, fine, but you're only throwing in those sentences to make yourself feel better.' And it was a perfect description of what was going through my mind. And everybody who knows Obama all have these stories to tell about his capacity for social perception.

Concerned   October 8th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

It's one thing to ignite a party but it's another thing to continue to spew hatred amongst a group and therefore insighting the ugly side in people especially if you hear hatred being yelled out at these rallies. This is very dangerous for anyone!

Cathy Agu   October 8th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

This is the truth and the GOP should rescue its self and make this woman disappear. Listen to Kathleen Parker.

P   October 8th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

How mean is it for Palin to attack Biden when he is going to his mother-in-laws funreal, does she have any since of respect for others in the world?

Would any of you attack someone when they are suffering a lost in the family? Be Honest you would not!

Kelby from Houston, TX   October 8th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

Sara Palin does not represent a fatal cancer on the GOP…that title rests squareley upon the religious right who have mutated the GOP into the anti-intellectual party it is now. They made a deal with the devil when they thought they were talking to God. This move created a us against them attitude in that party. And it's bad enoug they already have this thou shalt not speak ill of a fellow republican rule…(that is so stupid)

DH   October 8th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

I notice no one has commented on this. It is so sad it is unbelievable. She is not just a fatal cancer to the GOP, she is fatal for our country. Is it so important to have a Republican administration that we would elect a woman that could end the world as we know it? Come on folks. John messed up. It was a cute move and now she is allowing her audiences to shout racial and terrorist rantings and not even say ANYTHING about it. Can we say Hitler here? If you disagree with her, eventually she will come after you, and if she is the POTUS, there is not squat you can do about. I'm leaving the bus John. You lost my vote. I'll vote for ABYT. (Anyone But You Two)

Amy in Minneapolis   October 8th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

Palin is more like a flat joke of a person!!

IowaChad   October 8th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

Funny he doesn't write this in his NY Times op-eds.

Bill Maher talked about this on his show. On one hand, you have people of low intellect who vote against their own interests because they want to have a beer with a candidate. On the other hand you have the conservative intellectuals. The conservative intellectuals know better. They know Palin is not qualified. Yet they lie and rave about her because they know the dumb people don't know better.

Sharpen your pitchfork, light your torch... and meet me at the Capitol   October 8th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

"Conservative" David Brooks? Yeah, sort of like "Conservative" Joe Lieberman or "Conservative" John McCain.

Call me when a REAL conservative bags on her, and maybe I'll believe you.

gpenn FL   October 8th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

You know it's bad when Palin get's called out by her own party. McCain must be wishing he could take it back.

Dallas, TX   October 8th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

As a voted, I do not believe this is true, Mr. Brooks.

Sarah Palin has my vote based on the fact that she is a Washington outsider. We need fresh people in Washington.

It is clear that the OLD establishment cannot do the job. They are more worried about getting themselves payraises and lobbying through earmarks instead of the American people!

That goes to both, Dems and Repubs.

Sarah Palin '08!!!!

Average American   October 8th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

I want to understand why someone would want an "average, everyday American" to be president or vice president. I don't want someone that's "like you and me" in that office. I'm not smart enough to have that job so why would i want someone like me to have it. Can someone answer this for me?

I want an elitist to be president. The reason is that an elitist is, well, elite. Or at least an elitist thinks they are elite which is better than thinking you're just like everyone else when you have the most important job in the world. Those who founded this great nation and wrote our constitution all had one very important thing in common. They were all elitists.

CMG   October 8th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

I couldn't agree more.

Juanito, Seattle   October 8th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

The President of the USA is arguably the most powerful position in world. No man that has ever run for the office has ever had any experience in that position, except those who were elected to serve a 2nd term. Those like recent Presidents Clinton and Bush, both probably had the worst 2nd terms in recent memory. Clinton was impeached. Bush had to deal with an attack on America. I would trust the judgment of Sen. McCain in the "unknown" or "unforeseen" events that any president would face. Obama in a like position absolutely frightens me.

Brian   October 8th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

Snap.

RIF   October 8th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

He's correct. She won't even show up on the news shows the day after a debate to defend her candidate. I truly believe some of McCain's surrogates and advisors like Nicole Wallace and Nancy Pfotenhaur (sp?) are better equipped for the job.

Theogracias   October 8th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

Well I guess McCain's health care credit will fix that right up. You betcha!

Mack   October 8th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

Since when in America is their a test to be President or Vice president. Read the Constitution sometime and you will see that Palin meets all the requirements..The problem with this country is that we have but a test on everything..and as a democrat I am angry that my party has turned into the republican party of 8 years ago. They learned their lesson and this election are even worse. Everyone accuses McCain of being negative, look at what the Obama camp has done and real factual evidence that Obama has ran a more negative campaign than McCain.

Clarice Harris   October 8th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

I agree Sarah is not READY…..

Gerry in Va. for Obama.   October 8th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

Well John McCain wanted her and it doesn't seem there is much he can do about it now. So, let his repug friends carry on about her as much as they see necessary to let him know they don't like her, it's o.k. with me cause I don't like her either.

Danielle   October 8th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

Governor Palin IS out of her league. Her interviews present her as a clueless script reader; without severe preparation or a script she has no idea what to say and I bet she has no idea what's going on in America outside of Alaska or how to deal with it.

Daniel   October 8th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

She may not have any ideas, but she sure can whip up an angry, racist, murderous mob. That should count for something, no matter what those egghead elitists in cocktail parties say!

tennyson   October 8th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

FOR SURE SHE IS NOWHERE NEAR THAT POSITION , IT WILL BE A MISTAKE TO PUT PALLIN IN THAT GLOVES, SHE CANT BE V.P,ALL HER FACTS ARE BASELESS.

Phil in KC   October 8th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

Aha! An area where Brooks and I agree!
Actually, there are conservatives whom I respect. Brooks is one of those. George Will is another. We just disagree on the issues or, more appropriately, how to deal with them.
So, when people like this condemn their own candidate, you have to believe it is more than partisan politics.

P   October 8th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

Yesterday McCain was speaking and said something about Obama and some guy said that Obama should be shot, and McCain and Palin said nothing to stop that kind of behavior. Also there was a black man working at the Palin rally and some crazy called the black man a boy, for no reason at all. Then last night McCain put down a voter telling him what he did not know and he was black too and he would not say his name. Then finally he called a sitting U.S. Senator not by his name or Senator but that one!

McCain and Palin are totally unfit to be in office, sticking the people of Alaska with a bill when she stays in her own home is criminal, plus she tells so many lies to the American people openly as if we are all dumb. Telling everyone that she stopped the bridge to no where is a lie too, she was not even sworn into office when that happened. then their is her husband who wanted Alaska along with herself to leave the U.S. Plus the lie about the plane that she said that she sold on EBay, when all she did was out it up for Auction but was sold through a broker, what a total liar she is and so is McCain.

McCain is a traitor to our great country, making all those videos to save his own life, what a coward he is and was, I guess country did not come first then, he said it himself, he did not love America until he was in that POW camp. As a solider we are trained to escape and to aid other to escape, I guess McCain missed that training, and that part about giving information to the enemy, even if it is false. I am former Army man and an independent voter and I see that there is no honor among McCain and Palin all they know is hate, fear, and racism. When did patriotism come from hate, bile, fear, and racism?

Arden   October 8th, 2008 5:33 pm ET

Thank you Rebecca Sinderbrand. It is comforting to know that there are people who are noticing how horrible the real Sarah Palin is. She is "snake oil in Lipstick". She should be removed from the ticket and sent back to Alaska. Go ahead and fool the people of Alaska, but you can't fool every American.

Who is Sarah Palin anyway?   October 8th, 2008 5:33 pm ET

Palin is a cancer to us all. She has brought nothing to the campaign other than an ability to dump data once she's absorbed it.

When asked about Supreme Court cases or her reading choices, she couldn't answer until days later – after she had a chance to acquire prepared answers.

How can we consider voting for someone when we have no idea who he or she is? And they want us to ask who Obama is? At least he's spoken to us for years.

DebM, Allentown, PA   October 8th, 2008 5:33 pm ET

I am stunned and incredibly saddened at the depth to which the McCain/Palin campaign has sunk in order to win this election. Their lies, vitriol and incitement of hatred and racism has set our country back decades. For a man who professes his honor and past service to country at every turn, McCain, along with his running mate and many members of the Republican party, has shed all semblance of honor in an attempt to win this presidential election. He may say his motto “Country First”, but it’s becoming more and more obvious that his true motto is “John McCain First”.

I commend Senator Obama for his attempt to remain above the fray. We, as Americans who are proud of our country and all we have achieved in its relatively short history, need to stand up in unison and say that the age of fear and smear politics is over. John McCain may be willing to surrender his honor to gain the White House, but we Americans are not willing to surrender our honor to put him there. Please stand with me on November 4 and say “ENOUGH” to John McCain, Sarah Palin and their campaign of fear and hatred. Please vote Obama/Biden, and let’s begin to return our country to its previous glory and standing as the most powerful and envied nation in the world.

Lisa   October 8th, 2008 5:33 pm ET

I believe that some of the people may realize that the emperor has no clothes!

P   October 8th, 2008 5:33 pm ET

Palin is scarey, dumb, a liar, and a complete faker, who does not answer question at all, she tell the moderator she was not going to answer the questions asked and then asked herself her own questions and still did not answer her own questions.

Bit   October 8th, 2008 5:32 pm ET

She is a "cancer" because she is spreading around hatred and underhanded racism.

It's a shame that the McHatred conservative campaign is spewing out these types of attacks. They are not just doing this to hurt Obama but it also hurts the people that it's against (blacks).

I'm ashamed of the campaign. McCain, you claim that you are a Maverick but if you were you would go against your party and stop the hatred, racist comments by your VP and surrogates.

You have lost that title…………………..

bigmike31313   October 8th, 2008 5:32 pm ET

McCain's new strategy as "dishonest, dishonorable character attacks." He signaled Obama will still try to keep the economy front-and-center going forward.
"We understand that it's not easy for John McCain to defend the worst economic record of our lifetime, but he will have to explain to the people struggling to pay their bills and stay in their homes why he would rather spend his time tearing down Barack Obama than laying out a plan to build up our economy,"

thomas   October 8th, 2008 5:32 pm ET

The country is in crisis. George Bush and Dick Cheney should be impeached immediately. They deserve it. Washington must be reformed. Time is of the essence. The people need help.

Wrinkly and Winky   October 8th, 2008 5:32 pm ET

Palin personifies all of the ugliness that has turned the GOP from a party of fiscal conservatives to power-lust, greed, and corruption.

True Republican   October 8th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

Senator John McCain, I like you, I respect you, and YES I am voting for you.

Senator McCain, you need to really knock the ball out of the ball park during the next debate, you need to think, prepare and really give us an economic plan.

Focus, Focus, Focus, also is it too late to consider Romney, I like Gov. Palin yet I'm simply thinking about a WIN at this point.

It's time for you to get this thing together for the sake of the party.

…you still have my vote…

Dhillon   October 8th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

An incompetent VP Candidate?

Does not know what the national security means.

EVEN STEVIE WONDER CAN SEE THAT SHE NOT READY!

ines   October 8th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

Palin is just one, but probably the most visable, of McCain's long-shot gambles gone awry.

I agee with Brooks, McCain's and Palin's outrageously negative behavior in this campaign has set off a self-destruct sequence in the GOP party.

JT   October 8th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

Palin is a blank slate, in the form of a woman, on which McCain's campaign can write whatever they want to.

She was a tactic. A failed tactic.

Vegas Barbie for Obama   October 8th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

Translation to common speak? She is an idiot, an imbecile. And yes, a cancer on the party, her state, the nation…my ears and my mind. Thankfully, Senators Obama and Biden will rid this country of the Palin Pox and the McCain Malady in a matter of 28 days!
YES WE CAN!!!
