Keating is a McCain campaign co-chair.

(CNN) — A prominent surrogate for John McCain on Thursday raised Barack Obama's admitted cocaine use as a teenager and said the Illinois senator should speak candidly about it to the American people.

Speaking to Dennis Miller, a comedian and conservative radio talk show host, former Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating said Obama should be more forthright about his background and what he called his "very extreme" record.

"He ought to admit, ‘You know, I've got to be honest with you. I was a guy of the street. I was way to the left. I used cocaine. I voted liberally, but I'm back at the center,'" Keating, a co-chair of McCain’s campaign, said Obama should tell voters. "I mean, I understand the big picture of America. But he hasn't done that."

An aide to John McCain said Keating was not directed by the campaign to make the comments.

"We didn’t ask him to do it,” the aide said. “He didn’t clear it with us, but obviously he’s read Senator Obama’s books.”

The Obama campaign has not responded to the comments.

The remarks ring similar to comments made by prominent New Hampshire Democrat Bill Shaheen, a Hillary Clinton supporter, during the primary. Shaheen predicted in December that Obama’s drug past would be a major Republican talking point if her were the Democratic nominee. He later apologized for the comments, but stepped down from his role in the Clinton campaign. Black Entertainment Television founder Bob Johnson, another Hillary Clinton backer, also had to apologize after making overt references to Obama's drug use at campaign rally in South Carolina.

In Obama's 1995 book Dreams of My Father, he writes that he was once headed in the direction of a "junkie" and a "pothead. Referring to his emotional struggles as a young man, Obama writes, "Pot had helped, and booze; maybe a little blow when you could afford it. Not smack, though."

Obama did speak during his primary campaign about his past experimentation with drugs and alcohol in high school.

"I made some bad decisions that I've actually written about," he told New Hampshire high school students last November. "There were times when I, you know, got into drinking, experimented with drugs. There was a whole stretch of time where I didn't really apply myself a lot."

Bush was drunk till he was 40 years old and had a drunk driving rap, and wasen't a teenager when this occured. Obama was honest and told us about his experience with drugs in the primaries. So what's the big scoop??

All these issues have been addressed in a publication already. This means that people that are willing and able to read can know this knowledge for themselves. And why is something you did in high school important at this stage in his lfe? Oh yeah, because the opponent is like way behind in the polls! Bury them Barack!

Oh come on! We've all done stupid things when we were young. Republicans and Democrats alike are equally guilty of making naive mistakes in their younger years. Hey, I'll even admit that I've gone through a "pothead" phase in my own life. But the point is that I got out of it once I came to the realization that it was a detriment to my future success. I'm clean now, and have a graduate degree in engineering. None of the people I know, even my own family, hold that against me. I refuse to hold adolescent indiscretions against either candidate. Neither should any of you! Especially any of you out there who have ever "experimented" at any point in your life.

McCain is a man who has become totally devoid of any integrity. He continues to lie, lie, lie. And why bring up these issues from the past. Everyone has some things they are not proud of in their past. What matters is how someone overcome these and lives a positive and honorable life now.

McCain has no honor. He is so anxious to get into power as president, he has lost all sense of reason and decency. He is shameful and has soiled his military honor as well by doing this. Remember this is the man who said in an interview with the DesMoines Register:

“I’m not saying this is the perfect answer. If I were dictator, which I always aspire to be, I would write it … a little bit differently.”

Dictator right!! I am sure that was an honest slip of the tongue. This is exactly what he would be.

No McCain No Palin unless we want the country to become a banana republic.

eddie   October 9th, 2008 8:50 pm ET

ok why is that so important about what he did as a kid ,instead what he is doing now as a man

Deborah   October 9th, 2008 8:49 pm ET

Let me see if I understand this. Obama admits to experimenting with drugs, not an UNHEARD of event for teenagers, and others, in this country. Yet, because he discusses it in his book, and obviously did NOT become a "junkie" or "pot head" but instead went on to Columbia University and got a LAW degree, this is a knock against him???

Now he's being slammed by McCain/Palin and surrogates for being HONEST?? For being and EXAMPLE of what a person can achieve when they resist/overcome the temptation of drugs??

Yeah, sheesh…wouldn't want to set a GOOD EXAMPLE, now would we, McCain/Palin??? Much prefer to sling mud in your desperation.

tmike   October 9th, 2008 8:49 pm ET

The McCain campaign is in full desperation mode. The democratic primary already vetted Obama in case they were'nt watching. The McCain campaign has been out manuevered and overmatched from the start. They have run out of any legitimate ideas and frankly it is sad.

CWhite   October 9th, 2008 8:49 pm ET

About 75% of America is with Barack on this. If you have not tried drugs you are very much in the minority. This did not hurt Bill Clinton AT ALL!

Rob R   October 9th, 2008 8:49 pm ET

Yeah, and Bill Clinton smoked pot (whether he inhaled or not) and I'll take 8 years of Clinton to 8 years of Bush (who was an alcoholic no less).

I don't think most people care about what he did when he was a teen or young adult. I mean come on, how many of us did some form of drugs or drink a lot in college?

I smoked weed, did mushrooms, and drank like a fish in college. Now, I am 33 and a parent and haven't touched any drugs since college and I drink socially. But according to Republican logic, my past makes me a bad person for life. How pathetic.

Most Americans will realize these are all pathetic smears and highly obvious ones at that. All the more reason to get rid of as many Republicans as possible and replace them with Obama as President and a 60 seat majority in the Senate. That would be such poetic justice to reduce the Republicans to an irrelevant minority in the Senate that wouldn't be able to filibuster!!!!

Doug Hughes   October 9th, 2008 8:48 pm ET

Is this Keating any relation to Charles Keating, the S&L banker who was a personal friend of Senator McCain? The fraud & mismanagement of Lincoln Savings & Loan was bad. Senator McCain was (surprise) front & center in helping the S & Ls stay deregulated while his pal played fast & loose with uninsured depositors funds.Keating was sent to jail. McCain got off with a reprimand from Senate Ethics for trying to stop the investigation.

Sue M   October 9th, 2008 8:48 pm ET

I' m from OKlahoma and Keating is not highly thought of in this State…….what's that tell you? So what if he did experiment with drugs, a lot of people have but wouldn't admitt it……Obama did admit it so that makes him an honest man in my opinion. With all this trash the republicans are throwing it is all going to come back to them and hit them in the face on Nov.4………this is not helping McCain get the undecided voters or the women voters, he is turning more away than he is getting to vote for him.

This is between Obama and his God! Judge not and be ye not judged. For all the Bible reading the right wingers claim to do, they sure do not walk the talk!

Now is the time for serious prayer for Sen. Obama and Sen. Biden. The devil is busy. Unfortunately the pastor that prayed over Gov. Palin could rebuke the spirit within. So now it's up to the rest of us to band together and rebuke the evil spirits within the Republican campaign.

The prayer of a righteous man availeth much! Let us pray….

It's sad to see the Republicans disgrace America because they are so desperate to maintain their grip on power. If their myriad failings of the past 28 years don't convince voters it's time to truly change the direction of America, then certainly the disgraceful, despicable and disgusting rhetoric spewed by the Republican Party in recent days certainly should.

Jennifer   October 9th, 2008 8:46 pm ET

Has John McCain lost his mind???? Here was a man, who by all reasonable accounts, came into this election as the front-runner. He has the experience, he is a distinguished veteran with a record of bipartisan cooperation, he was not the same kind of Republican as George W…. How has it come to this? John McCain and Sarah Palin have brought shame to themselves in this campaign. How can they solicit votes from people who are silly enough to get caught up in smear campaigns when our country is in a serious crisis? I guess John McCain really is as out of touch as everyone says.

I get it! Ayers (who, by the way was Citizen of the Year in Chicago in 1997), "ohmygod Barack took some drugs when he was an adolescent"–It's becoming clear now, with the increasingly desperate and ridiculous tone of McCain's campaign: McCain is still living in the 60's! The Weathermen, anti-Viet Nam protests, etc. etc.–McCain is still THERE. Get over it, John. We know you came from an Admiral's family, we know you were among those who volunteered for service, we know you were shot down and tortured, but Viet Nam is OVER. The Weathermen are FINISHED. Viet Nam was an ILLEGAL WAR. People TAKE DRUGS AS ADOLESCENTS AND ARE STILL OK AS ADULTS.

How does McCain sleep at niight - on a corkscrew I think.

Every wine barrel has dregs at the bottom. They don't go down very well, and neither do the pathetic attempts by the McCain folks to dredge up scum. The Arizona patriarch never fails to cash in on his POW days. He tries to distance himself from his record of helping the Vietcong in its propaganda against our country, and no one doubts that he did it unwillingly, but while there's no disgrace in breaking under torture there's no heroism in it either. He, like any of us veterans,is deserving of the gratitude of his fellow citizens but it doesn't entitle him to a seat in the Oval Office. History books last longer than sleazy sound bytes. He should remember this, and try to preserve what little respect he still has left.

Obama has never tried to hide his past mistakes. That is what sets him apart from many other great politicians and not so great politicians. What a relief to finally have a politician who is not only imperfect, but admits that he is not perfect.

The McCain/Palin ticket obviously needs to tie a rope and hold on. The ship is sinking and the camp's efforts to bail out are inevitably useless.

Patricia   October 9th, 2008 8:42 pm ET

Where has this guy been? He must not read much. Obama talked about this in his book. He explained that he was going to be up front about it in his campaign. He talked about it on tv early on in his campaign and answered host show questions about it i.e. on Larry King Live. And I don't see why that would matter now. There are MANY younger voters who have been a part of that scene and would understand where he is coming from. Those of you who have children who are now around 35 know what I am talking about. I know the pressures my kids went through in high school and college. I wish they hadn't felt a need to fall into peer pressure, but they did. However, they are very productive lovely adults now. And it is very obvious none of it affected his brain - he is sharper than most. I appreciate his natural gifts for leadership. He definitely is a natural. I agree with Michelle Obama when she said he can see a complex situation and understand it - and explain it in terms most people can't.
People ask the wrong questions. How could he have taken drugs? The question should be, did he get past it? Cindy McCain seems to have overcome her drug problem. Are you going to dig that back up too?

I don't believe that G.W. Bush ever told us much at all about his drunken and drug using past. I've known people in Houston that grew up right next door to him, and they could tell you pretty interesting stories about his affinity for blow.

The fact is that a majority of us experimented with drugs of one sort or another when we were young. We all made mistakes, but what's important and relevant is what we made of ourselves and who we are today.

Very desperate tactics (not strategy) by Republicans.

George W. Bush admitted to using drugs including pot and cocaine, as well as being a heavy drinker. "W" was arrested for DUI on at least 2 occasions.

I'm disappointed that CNN would bother with this story.

Patty   October 9th, 2008 8:38 pm ET

McCain and his surrogates are pathetic and dangerous….his wife is out there, his VP pick is out there, his mouthpieces are out there, all spreading hatred; inciting if not actually encouraging those at their rallies to yell threats of violence while they are speaking at the podium. I saw Palin actually smiling widely when some of this went on….and following up with more. McCain is allowing the hatred to continue with the reasoning that this is the only way he can win. The fact that he considers this an acceptable path to the white house really shows me the character of the man and the team.

If McCain really was all about "country first" he would bow out now and wish Obama and the country well….

Susan from Scotts Valley, CA   October 9th, 2008 8:38 pm ET

Desperation. By the time we get to the election, they'll be claiming it was Obama that orchestrated 9-11.

Tegan   October 9th, 2008 8:38 pm ET

One would think that the Republican party would be ashamed of their Geezer (adultry, lying in own autobiograpy, USS Forrestal incident that left many dead, flipflopping all over the place about what he says he said, disrespecting other candidates, etc.) and Gidget (who is being investigated as I type for abuse of power, has made a speech for a seperatist group, and has just made a mockery of women who are in politics and personally intelligent women anywhere, etc.). The way they conduct themselves has nothing to do with being presidential or vice presidential. If you think the independents are responding well to their hate filled campaign, check the polls. On second thought, I guess maybe the Republicans don't care. Cheney and Bush aren't exactly role models.

sly   October 9th, 2008 8:37 pm ET

At one point I really did think McCain would be a good choice for president (yes I had drank the kool aid), but now I don't even think he knows what is going on. Do you guys really think McCain knows what is going on around him and his campaign? Everyday day is a bag of surprises and still no clear message from him how he is going to get us out of this mess. I think we lost him right about when he said we should be able to deliver hot water bottles to dehydrated babies……..

Matt   October 9th, 2008 8:37 pm ET

Somebody really needs to call the people who publish the Oxford English Dictionary, because the McCain campaign is redefining the word "disgusting" on an almost daily basis.

I sometimes wonder how dense the McCain staff think we are. It is amost funny to watch someone get up in a campaign speech and ask John McCain why he doesn't get tougher and then he stands there with a soft smile and acts like he is "holier than thou." Then Governor Keating brings up something like the teen drug phase which Barack Obama has already stated it happened and was a mistake that is long past. What what McCain's parties and almost flunking out of military school? They are even so dumb to state they are going after his character. I don't think they even "get the fact" that we are onto them.

And, yet those raising the issue of Obama's minimal drug use are the one and same who elected a former alcoholic and cocaine abuser, yes, I'm talking George W. Bush! And, what about that Rush Limbaugh—and what about Cindy McCain, and so on and forever.

In other words, stop it all you mudslingers—your time is up! Oh, and, of course, once again, McCain did not approve this!!!!

Kim   October 9th, 2008 8:37 pm ET

Instead of discussing Obama's drug use from his TEENAGE years, can the McCain campaign provide us with solutions to HELP the American people, during this rough economy.

This is getting really old - really fast.

Sue   October 9th, 2008 8:37 pm ET

The Republicans are sad, pathetic, desperate people. And I've been a Republican all my life (59 years). I'm voting Obama for the change this country needs.

Cheryl in Florida   October 9th, 2008 8:37 pm ET

This is ridiculous, what should be the issue is that as a teenager Obama may have experimented with drugs as many many others also did but turned it around, turned his back on it and went on to become a successful individual that made it his life goal to work for the good of citizens. If these individuals want to bring this up than is it not fair bring up the drug use Palin's 2 older children that was talked about by other teens in their town that partied with them or the fact the town Palin was mayor of has more than it's share of meth labs . Stop the nonsense and have your candidate focus on what matters, oh sorry I forgot he has no real policy to focus on just a hate filled campaigin so he does not have to discuss real issues.

NO McCain, NO Palin, NO CINDY   October 9th, 2008 8:37 pm ET

Bailout NOW and it'll save the economy? Serious blunder.

Since when has drug use/abuse been a liberal or a conservative issue??? Do conservatives REALLY want to go through the litany of their greatest hits in this regard????

Home ownership seems out of the question now. Talk to me about how I'm going to be able to afford groceries to feed my children, gas for my car, savings to pay for college — not this hogwash.

roger dowdle, lockhart, Tx   October 9th, 2008 8:36 pm ET

McCain and Palin should realize that when they condone people shouting "KILL HIM" about Obama, they are tacitly giving their approval to somebody who feels lik killing them. By incouraging such behavior, they may reach some nut case or really angry person who may not be thinking clearly, and possibly participating in a murder! And for Palin to tell those fools "you get it" shows how unworthy she is to be allowed on the repub. ticket.

Jena   October 9th, 2008 8:36 pm ET

It is so obvious that the McCain campaign is running out of ideas, so they are sinking to this low road political strategy. It's sickening. But it is very telling of what type a man McCain is and it calls into question his 'honor.'

McCain is desperate and so are his supporters and it shows!

Jane   October 9th, 2008 8:35 pm ET

I hope that people will pay attention to the non talking McCain without a plan. McCain will not talk about issues when asked a guestion but will be quick to say that Obama is this and that. Now how can a grown man play childlish games. Get a plan McCain. Get a Plan

Charles   October 9th, 2008 8:35 pm ET

Anybody remember the lovely little sitting Obama and McCain had at the church in California? As I recall, Obama didn't need a question to bring it up and describe it as his darkest hour. Asked what he most regrets, he said blatantly and to the people, my youthful transgressions and experimentation with drugs. This really is getting shameful but I fear Americans might just be afraid enough to fall for it.

Pathetic.

Major American companies are going down the tubes, people can't pay their mortgages and what do we here from the McCain campaign? Personal attacks that have been reheated from the primaries. It didn't work then and it won't work now.

Barack offers calm confident leadership in difficult times and has laid out thoughtful well crafted policies while McCain has been all over the map.

We'll see where McCain thinks the wind is blowing tomorrow and adjust his policy views from there.

This is so ridiculous!!! They will bring up every negative issue that Senator Obama clearly discussed either in his books or on the campaign to try to make Americans avoid the issues! How sad for the McCain campaign and the Republican party as a whole for lowering themselves so much. They continue to set the tone for a major collapse in November. Americans will decide to vote for a serious candidate who wants to deal with their problems, rather than a politician who sold out his "maverick" values and lost his way.

A.D. Vasquez   October 9th, 2008 8:33 pm ET

This question should be raised with all of our Republican brothers & sisters…

If John McCain is so great, why didn't you choose him in 2000? (Resoundingly so I must add.)

Also, if W. was a better choice then, then why on earth would you vote for him now?…

jim   October 9th, 2008 8:33 pm ET

At least Obama is honest enough to admit a weakness that he had as a youth. Unlike the rest of these crooked people who have ruined our country with lies!! I find that very refreshing and I forgive him!!

America needs an honest leader, unlike Bush and his party who continue to lie and mislead the American people into the dark times we face right now.

Honesty is what America needs right now, more than ever. Obama was able to rise out of his dark time to achieve an outstanding success. If he can do that for himself, and be honest about it, think about what he might do for our country!!

No more lies from Republicans who have run the average American into the ground for the benefit of the rich!! It's time we face our dark times, like Obama did, and rise to success! As neither a Republican or a Democrat, but just an average man - I stand with pride knowing an honest man will lead our country!

Again, I forgive him and I bet America does to.

Obama landslide and lets all forget about the miserable people who have lied to us for so long!!!!!

Why, Bush has kept his use secret. Obama experimented with coke, Palin with Marijuana. To most voters under 60 these are not big issues. They are especially small, given the country current problems. Both Obama who is on the left, this is not a secret. and McCain who has a very right wing voting record, have moved to the center. If you can;t believe one, why should we believe the other.
Obama knows a 60 radical, Palin;s husband belonged and Palin herself is sympathetic towards a political party whose founding father was buried in Canada because he hated the United States.

None of these are important issues in this election. Everyone has blemishes in their record.

cindy   October 9th, 2008 8:30 pm ET

I think that the McCains should also speak candidly to the American people about Cindy McCains drug addiction and illegal prescriptions. See entry cut and pasted from Wikipedia.
Prescription drug addiction:
In 1989, Cindy McCain became addicted to Percocet and Vicodin, opioid painkillers, which she initially took to alleviate pain following two spinal surgeries for ruptured discs, and to ease emotional stress during the Keating Five affair.[38][39][39][40][41] The addiction progressed to where she was taking upwards of twenty pills a day,[15] and she resorted to having an AVMT physician write illegal prescriptions in the names of three AVMT employees without their knowledge.[38][42] In 1992, her parents staged an intervention to force her to get help;[22] she told her husband about her problem, attended a drug treatment facility, began outpatient sessions, and ended her three years of addiction.[39] Surgery in 1993 resolved her back pain.[39][41]

In January 1993, Tom Gosinski, an AVMT employee, who had discovered her illegal drug use, was terminated on budgetary grounds.[43] Subsequently, he tipped off the Drug Enforcement Administration, and a federal investigation ensued.[38][43] McCain's defense team, led by John McCain's Keating Five lawyer John Dowd, secured an agreement with the U.S. Attorney's office for McCain, a first-time offender, that avoided charges while requiring her to pay financial restitution, enroll in a diversion program and do community service.[38][10][43] Meanwhile, in early 1994 Gosinski filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against McCain, which he told her he would settle for $250,000.[38][43] In response, Dowd characterized this request as blackmail and requested that officials investigate Gosinski for extortion.[38][43] In the end, both Gosinski's lawsuit and the extortion investigation against him were dropped.[38][39]

Knowing that the DEA prosecutors were about to publicly disclose her past addiction, McCain preemptively revealed the story to reporters saying she was doing so willingly: "Although my conduct did not result in compromising any missions of AVMT, my actions were wrong, and I regret them."[38][39][10

His drug use can be understandable because his father had died and he didn’t know what to do. Another possibility is that McCain has done drugs himself. After all he did serve in Vietnam and no offense to any veterans but there were lots of drugs floating around over there. Even my dad experienced it during his service. All I’m saying is that it wouldn’t be hard to believe that McCain has done some experimenting of his own.

Non issue… not worth a response.

Former Governor Keating, did you request an investigation into Sarah Palin's background? It seems the officials is Alaska are dragging their feet. Of course you didn't. Sarah Palin would never do the things she's been accused of. The way I see it, it's black and white.

OHIO FOR OBAMA   October 9th, 2008 8:27 pm ET

Good lord! Perhaps he should flagellate himself in the public square. He was stupid and young AND HE HAS ADMITTED IT! I read the books also but apparently I understood them. Someone should explain to Mr. Co-Chair that these books are what honesty looks like. If I had the behavior and academic record of Johnnie-Boy, I would tell anyone speaking of my opponent's youth to shut up! I'd say Mr. McCain fits into the definition of reckless better than maverick.

Its about nightfall now for the McCain campaign and the the sewer rats are emerging attempting to nip at our intelligence. I want to say this once: ITS THE ECONOMY STUPID!!!!

iowaobamafan   October 9th, 2008 8:26 pm ET

Uh….I think he has talked about it openly. I don't think you write about your drug and alcohol use in a best selling book and expect it to be a secret. McCain is really getting desperate now. Obama has been fully vetted during the primaries. This has all been covered and re-covered. If it were an issue with the American people, Senator Obama would not be the democratic nominee.

Is this guy kidding? Is this what these morons resort to when they know it is a lost cause for the republican party? I wonder what this jerk has in his skeleton closet. Actually I really don't want to know, I am sure he is as pathetic as any other jerk with blatant double standards. Why does the press continue to dignify this junk by giving it a voice? Wow, McCain's posse is just exemplary in their vaccuous ineptitudes.

Chris   October 9th, 2008 8:26 pm ET

I think Obama did talk to the American people when he wrote about his drug use in his book which is available at almost every bookstore all across the country! The McCain camp is very obviously getting really nervous now that sophomore comments like this are being made. Geez…

Joe   October 9th, 2008 8:26 pm ET

so disgusting. They don't want to talk about the issues. They admit they don't want to talk about the issues. 100% of their television ads are NEGATIVE ads. 1/3 of Obama's television ad's are negative ads.
