New polls show Obama with leads nationally and in several key battleground states. (AP Photo)

(CNN) - Barack Obama continues to hold significant leads over John McCain, a fresh round of state and national polls out Thursday suggest, in what is unwelcome news for the Republican presidential nominee as Election Day inches closer and closer.

The Illinois senator now holds a 6 point lead over McCain nationwide, a new CNN poll of polls consisting of five recently released surveys show, while 8 percent remain undecided.

A string of new state polls also show Obama holding significant leads in several key battleground states, including Minnesota, New Hampshire, Ohio, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. McCain is holding onto leads in Montana and Missouri.

In Minnesota, CNN's latest poll of polls shows Obama up 11 points, 52-41 percent, while he holds a 9 point lead in CNN's latest New Hampshire poll of polls, 51-42 percent. Obama is also holding onto a 4 point lead in Ohio, 50-46 percent in CNN's latest poll of polls there.

In West Virginia, Obama holds an 8 point lead in a new American Research Group poll, though CNN's Sept. 21-23 poll of West Virginia showed McCain leading there by 4 points. In Wisconsin, a new Research 2000 poll shows Obama with a 10 point lead, 51-41 percent. CNN's Wisconsin poll earlier this month showed Obama with a 5 point lead.

In Missouri, a new CNN poll of polls shows McCain hanging onto a 1 point lead, while the Arizona senator has a 5 point lead in Montana according to a new American Research Group poll.

Hard to believe that Obama is up by 8 points in WVA. I am from PA and have heard some really disappointing and mean comments when it comes to Obama. WVA are PA neighbors, and I truly doubt that the numbers will stay up in favor of Obama.

Don't mean to sound negative but it will be a miracle if WVA votes for Obama. A MIRACLE I say.

Father God, in the blessed name of Jesus, send Sarah Palin a-packing. The republicans simply prostituted her out and when there is no more use for her, she will have to simply tuck her tail and go home. But I don't think she will be welcomed as warmly as when she left. A lot of things have come out, and she has done a lot of damage to different races, religions, and backgrounds.
God Bless you Senator Obama, and I pray that I get to call you MR. PRESIDENT.....

Denise Bolin   October 9th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

The fact the FOX could show McShame winning the debate 84% to 16% should tell you ALOT. Watch out for the desperate party and CHECK YOUR VOTER REGISTRATION........................ NOW!!!!!!!!!

Denise Bolin   October 9th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

Everyone check your registration. Notice how desperate the McShames are and with their hatred and willingness to win at any cost – WE NEED TO KEEP FIGHTING TO THE END. Do not let them get away with cheating the election AGAIN.

Jay   October 9th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

Thank God these stupid race-baiting smears by the dishonorable McCain campaign are backfiring. This is exactly what the country needs. If Obama can with with a big enough majority I feel we won't have all of the pettiness that we left the last two divisive elections with. We're all witnessing a real uniter this time.

Melanie, San Diego, CA   October 9th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

I think Sean Hannity and Elizabeth are having heart attacks right now.

Elizabeth on the View is so funny. She is working overtime to sling mud on Obama, but it is NOT working. I love the fact that the audience is not really listening to her. There are a few who might applaud, but the bulk is for Obama. I love her face every time the audience sides with Sherrie, or Joy or Whoopi. It's fun to watch.

I confess that the differences between these candidates is profound. And that doesn't even take into account their VP partners. We have a chance to strengthen our country and bring people together in ways that have not happened in decades. I am gratified that most Americans support Obama. Don't get me started with Palin.

Don't rely on those polls. I do remember that Gore was ahead of Bush by 11 percent and he lost just several days later. The media has said Acorn is showing alot of fraud. It was reported in Lake County, Indiana that 5000 were fraud. And that in Indianapolis registering was up 105 percent and that was fraud reporting. In Cleveland , Ohio they reported fraud. In Neveda, I see one poll in Ohio had Obama up but then in my area the polls show that McCain is up by 6 percent. But the news just issued a report that Obama had a campaign fund dinner in Kaldi's home. Will that hurt him Polls don't rely on them, It was told to me that people are paid to say they are voting a certain way when they are. I think this election is neck and neck.

America had better realize that the lobbyists who will comprise McChicken's entourage do not have the interest of any American at heart. Every plan that CcCain proposes has a negative implications for the struggling Americans and will only serve to increase the burden. I just listened to McCain on Charlie Gibson and all he did was invoke the name of Former American Presidents.. If I wasn't aware of the psychological warfare he's waging on unsuspecting Americans he might have caught me offguard

mccain and palin are shamlessly trying to distract voters and it is bacfiring on them. They are both pathetic and ruthless, they don't even have the decency to stop their supporters from yelling "terrorist", and "kill him". That is totally sickening, I will never ever vote for a republican again, they have no morals, no self-respect, and I am truly sickened by their tactics.

Stan   October 9th, 2008 7:01 pm ET

The country is hurting, and McCain has a deaf ear to the burdens of average Americans who did everything right.

I want a president who not only listens to us, but knows what to do to get something done. Also more people are interested in what Barack has to say. You can't have a president that only talks to a small segment of the people.

Obama/Biden 08

Cynthia - Arkansas   October 9th, 2008 7:00 pm ET

Obama has shown true leadership and courage in these tough times. McShame has done nothing but talk trash about Obama. What a sad little man!

People are starting to open their eyes when they see them side by side. You would have to be blind to not see who is qualified to be the President of the United States. That would be "that one", Barack Obama!

DMfromTX   October 9th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

Who said that WV is the "reddest of states"? It isn't, not by a long shot. Democratic registrants have outnumbered Republicans in that state for decades. WV voted for Bill Clinton twice. Get your facts straight, folks. Obama could carry WV and it wouldn't be a shock. Now, if he were to carry Alabama or Oklahoma, I'd call that a miracle.

Erik   October 9th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

A statesman with fresh ideas, intelligence, vision and respect for others versus a creepy little ill-tempered gnome. No brainer. Let's hope the Americans don't fall for last-minute fearmongering and slander. Can't wait for tomorrow's Alaska ethics investigation report!

Abe   October 9th, 2008 6:58 pm ET

To Bob &California Voter,
Seems like Senator McCain, you don't have anything of substance to offer. Check Senator Obama's website for his platform instead of continually spewing garbage about his lack of a plan or making unsubstantiative charge that he'll somehow turn the USA into a socialist state. What do you call Senator McCain's plan to buy up bad mortgages then if you think Senator Obama's plan to make healthcare affordable for every American is socialsim?

Stay The Course!   October 9th, 2008 6:58 pm ET

How can the American people be favoring a candidate who would apply intelligence to the Presidency?

After eight years of George Bush we are certainly comfortable with a reactionary dufus. Why change courses now?

Cynthia; Bham   October 9th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Thank goodness he is leading and in control. McCain/Palin have really gone too negative and are really really playing fast and loose with the truth. All American voters don't have the time to sit down and research whether what is being shown in the news soundbytes whether it is true or not. I guess you can say that McCain and Palin are desperate because they have not been saying much on the stump other than negative things.

Debby   October 9th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Yeah they polled 10 people in each state. LOL

REDNECKS LOVE OBAMA   October 9th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

California Gold   October 9th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

I'm waiting for McCain's explosive temper to blow. I believe that's why he couldn't –wouldn't– look at Barack Obama at the first debate and why McCain behaved so badly with his "that one" remark at the second debate. I'm sure his handlers are doing their best to keep the lid on his temper. Lord have mercy if he can't maintain before November 4th.

Sue   October 9th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

We can steal all the votes we need because we don't need no republican in there. If it takes acorn to do it no problem. 4 more years is too much! No bush 3rd term!

Cheryl   October 9th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

I can say this and am very sorry Michele Obama couldn't, without being politically eviscerated on the national stage: for the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country. I have hope for America for the first time in over 20 years, yet I am still afraid – afraid that the mud slinging, backstabbing, thinly-veiled insulting, etc. ad infinitum from McCain's campaign will win over the mob mentality (and oh Yes it exists, don't you dare tell me otherwise), and we'll see another 8 years of having everything inexorably taken from us.
Maybe it's time for another American revolution. What else is going to restore our country to being governed by people, not government?

Paul from Minnesota   October 9th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

Throughout this campaign, I have puzzled over the labeling of Minnesota as a "toss-up" state. We are the home of progressive Wellstone values. We have been reliably BLUE for thirty years. We are educated, active, and tolerant. Why did the pundits think Minnesota would take a step backward to support right-wing nut jobs? I'm shaking my head at that, but grinning from ear to ear. Oh yes. The democrats will take the Presidency. And the House. And finally get the veto-proof majority in the Senate. gObama!

This is going to be huge. The only thing that could help McCain now would be if he came out and actually listed at least 3 or 4 things he's going to do DIFFERENTLY from Bush.

Otherwise, his "maverick" claim is just so much hot air and he might as well pack it in and go home now.

We're on to him.

Based on the current plans presented by Barack OBAMA and John McCain, the choice is clearer than never before.

For anyone making less than $250,000, it is a disasters under the McCain plan.
1) tax cut is too low in comparison to tax cut provided to the top 1%
2) McCain will tax the healthcare benefits and this will impact the lower income badly.

in contrast under the OBAMA plan:
1) Tax cut for all under 250,000 / year
2) Healthcare premium reduction by 2500 per family (no taxation)
3) College fee of up to $4,000 per student in exchange of public service.

Obama has given me hope. If he can be elected and start to change the evil way the US (and most of the WORLD) is run, then there is hope for us.

This is not just about who will be the next president, it is about right and wrong, and the ability of good to prevail over evil.

The sad thing is folks....as Obama's numbers go up, the stock market and our economy go down. The economy becomes more uncertain with Obama at the helm. The Democrats ran their congressional campaigns 2 years ago on a "put us in the majority, and we will end the war and bring our troops home" slogan. What was their first order of business when they got the majority in both houses?....They voted to continue funding the war. Say one thing to get elected....do another thing when you get into power. Obama is promising without a plan that will work. He is a gifted orator, but that is where his leadership and experience end. For the love of America....VOTE FOR JOHN McCAIN, the truest leader our country has.

I'm also getting more concerned about the widespread voter fraud and ACORN involvement. Something is very fishy here.
--------------------------------

For you to say this means you are not LISTENING at all to what Obama has said, especially in the last debate in which he laid out specifics on his plans and spending proposals. You are deliberately tuning it out so that you can say thoughtless baloney like this on the blogs. Grow up.

Listen Up...   October 9th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

heard a woman on the radio today talking about how she was accosted by a McCain supporter in the ugliest way because she had on an Obama T-shirt. This white man attacked a white woman in a way that she feared for her life…over her freedom to express her political preference. The democratic primary was heated, but not to this temperature. McCain is playing to the lowbrow crowd and telling them it is OK to hate and fear this man not because of his policies (that can change), but things that can't change like his skin, name and blood line. McCain is UNWORTHY.

This is the effect of the McCain/Palin dirty war. Someone is going to get hurt and if they do I hope the victims of this war sue the pants off that campaign for inciting violence. The media needs raise their voices about this before it is too late.

These polls don't really mean anything. The one which counts is taken on election day in November. Everyone of us should show up and vote – either for the winner (Obama) or one of the losing tickets. ALL of us are going to be impacted by this election, we should all take part in the process.

A Woman In California For Obama:   October 9th, 2008 6:39 pm ET

To Obama Supporters:

This year we have a lot of republican support. Each day I see many of you are calling the republicans lots of names. This is NOT smart. I understand your feelings but I think you should scale back on the name calling. To call McCain and Palin names are one thing-but calling everyone in the republican party names including, those who are actually voting WITH us this year is another. Please think about it. WE want and appreciate their support. Please let's keep it only about the McCain's and the Palin's. There is sure plenty to say about these criminals.

I just heard of the voter fraud involving ACORN. I understand that ACORN has been under investion prior to the influx of voter registration.

Now, based on the POLL OF POLLS on your station, OBAMA has a signifcant lead over MC CAIN. Why would MR. OBAMA get involve with voter fraud when he is in the lead. Who would have most to gain by fraudulent voter application? REPBULICANS! and accuse this act on ACORN which in term would involve OBAMA. ACORN catered to many poor people, who normally would not come out to vote. Most poor people will vote DEMOCRAT. PLEASE CNN DO WHAT YOU DO BEST – INVESTICATE THIS.

Oren   October 9th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

One other point, get the facts on the whole ACORN scandal. It is about VOTER REGISTRATION FRAUD, not VOTER FRAUD! ACORN goes out and hires people in need of a job to go out and sign up low income people to vote. Some of those people that are hired find it is easier to make up people instead of going out and actually finding and signed up real people and ACORN always reports any registration forms that appear suspicious, in fact they reported it to the government before they were raided. None of those fraudulent registrations will ever be added to voter rolls since most if not all of the fraudulent forms have made up Social Security Numbers. It is NOT Voter Fraud. Two completely different things.... get informed!

Independent in NC   October 9th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

In response to the closed NRA thread below...

The reason people are concerned about gun control and Obama is that he wants to have decisions on gun ownership made at the state level. That is an issue because it would contradict the 2nd Amendment rights, and could possibly allow states to deny people those rights. It's not that Obama has said he wants to take them away, but that by moving it to the state level, it would be theoratically easier to do so.

For anyone thinking "no way," please remember that Roe v Wade was a states' rights issue, and the SC found that a state could not deny an abortion to a woman because of right to privacy. Now, although the whole basis of reasoning for RvW is shaky (there is no actual right to privacy guaranteed in the Constitution, I believe it is in the due process clause), it's the same principle. If RvW were overturned, the decision would go back into the hands of states. If Obama moves the decisions to the state level, states could theoretically enact bans.

Any cases could be taken to the SC, but given the appeals process, it could take years to have a decision overturned. So it's not a bunch of "right-wing nutjobs clinging to their guns," there is an actual legal argument behind their concern.

CNN, please post, it would be nice to have a few thoughtful responses in with the name calling and ranting.

opeluboy   October 9th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

These polls are extremely conservative. The gap is much wider. My fear is that the media is manipulating the voters into thinking it's closer than it really is. And now we're hearing about the mythical "Bradley Effect," giving the Republicans yet another out when they try to steal the election.

Your guy McCain has rolled over and that isn't Obama's fault. Place blame where it belongs. McCain hasn't offered a coherent plan since the economy began its sharpest descent because that would take effort and work and for those who have walked into their fortune like McCain has, they don't the meaning of those two words.

2008 is the new 1976. While the Bush administration is about as popular now as the disgraced Nixon administration was then, the new president will have to deal with unemployment, inflation, an energy crisis and in all likelihood, Iran.

My opinion is that the GOP today simply lacks the education, temperment and energy to govern with anything but an angry, divisive style. The Republicans largely have themselves to blame, not Bill Ayers.

As usual the Republican Camp is shouting LIBERAL BIAS! That is what they always do when they are behind. If you want to see bias in broadcasting all you have to do is turn to FOX News and Rush Limbaugh! That is what BIAS looks like! I trust CNN to be fair to both parties, because I have been watching closely. And they seem to be doing so. Now and then I can tell who wants what, but most of the time it is a fair and unbiased reporting! I am so happy to see that CNN is focusing on the voter registration problems across this country! We need to know that we can vote and know that our vote counts no matter who we are voting for!

American is waking up! At last! That is what explains the fact that Obama is in the lead! I am so proud of the number of people that are putting the issues ahead of anything else. I'm in Texas, a Red State. Everyone I talk to says they are sick of the Republican fear mongering and evil attacks. I think the Republicans will do everything they can short of physically attacking Obama and Biden, but you know..... it worries me with the violence of their supporters.

Obama/Biden 08

John   October 9th, 2008 6:23 pm ET

The more McCain and Palin attack Obama's character the more they hurt themselves. That only works for a while and people get sick and tired of it since everyone knows all politicians have dirty laundry. The problem is that at this point, with the economy going to hell the last thing people want to hear is that Obama did this or that instead of dealing with the issues.

I don't know you the McCain and Barbie's campaign managers are but they are going in the wrong direction with this. Those of us who were alive in the early 80s remember the S&L scandal and we know McCain was somehow involved, Obama mentioned it in an add that ran a few times and then was pulled; just enough to plant the doubt in voters, while McCain, Palin and Mrs. McCain have been going at the terrorist angle for days now. I'm tired of it and I know many other people are too.

Between the attacks and the grumpy, angry old man displays at the debates McCain is digging himself a huge hole.

McCain wasted too much time saying half truths and lies. We can see through those lies.
McCain said, Obama voted to raise taxes 94 times. Fact Check said that was misleading. Well after I read those fact checks, I knew McCain lied.
McCain said, Obama received the second highest campaign contributions from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. But the Federal Election commission said McCain received $160,000 dollars from Top CEO's, Executive Officers, and Lobbyists of Fannie Mae.
Now what was that Reform legislation that McCain is so proud of?
Plus Obama did not get any money at all from the companies of Fannie and Freddie. The campaign contributions he got was $16,000. from the Working employees of those companies.
McCain talks about a legislation that Democrats voted against something about Fannie and Freddie in his speeches. Well a Republican was talking about that legislation and mentioned that it was 5 years ago. " What, 5 years ago? " Obama was not in the US Senate 5 years ago.
Obama is ahead, because McCain used all his time talking half truths and lies
Sorry it was the Federal Election commission not the Federal Trade commission

It is no surprise that McCain is going down. I just listened to his stump speech in Wisconsin and both he and Palin are flat out liars. McCain keeps saying that Obama will impose fines and mandates on small businesses which has been debunked on politifact.com with a full false, so it's an outright lie. McCain also claimed that Obama did nothing to warn about subprime loans, but politifact.com also gave that a false saying it is public record that Obama sent a letter to Secretary Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Bernanke and even have a link to the letter. McCain claims their is no public record of it, another flat out lie. Another lie that he keeps claiming is that Obama voted 94 times to raise taxes, just look on politifact.com. Palin is repeating all of these lies. It's disgusting. People, you really need to check out Politifact.com and Factcheck.org.

McCain still holds a lead in Montana?

So now Montana is starting to slip into play?
:)

The Misouri poll surprises me, but there's still time, and 1 point is easily overtaken.

Remember, not one single Kerry state is in play, and Obama is sure to win both Iowa and New Mexico...

If McCain loses one more state (or two if it's a state like Montana or South Dakota), he loses. Period.
Right now, Obama is ahead in 6 other Bush states: Nevada, Colorado, Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida.

Obama is competing for one of Nebraska's electoral votes, Misouri, Indiana, and now is also competing for Montana... and I believe he's got a long-odds shot at Mississippi.

Obama is ahead, because McCain used all his time talking half truths and lies.

Irmiya M Sauka   October 9th, 2008 6:21 pm ET

In McCain-Palin campaign rally spectators were heard branding Obama a terrorist and one is heard shouting "kill him" if this can be said publically and McCain is mute and not publically condemning such utterances whatever happens to Obama McCain and his campaign must be held resposible. The Christians in the GOP must issue a disclaimer to most of the things coming from the McCain-Palin Campaign.

CNN seems to have already projected Obama the winner, several weeks before the election. This just adds to the steamroller-jump on the bandwagon effect. Before we put Obama in the White House, we all need to THINK first, and not just follow the herd. I have supported Obama throughout the primaries and only recently have begun to have doubts. Obama's decision to use Bill Ayers and his wife (domestic terrorists who have no regrets to this day) to help start his public career reveals a dangerously Nixonian ambition devoid of moral values. In case people out there don't know, Ayers' father was CEO of the electric utilities company in the Chicago area. The Ayers family backed the Daley political machine; so thery are "family" despite despicable acts. Never mind Obama's decision to belong to a very radical church which was popular in his district. Obama's purposes and motives appear to be grounded in only one thing – political expediency.

WHO IS SARAH PALIN?

Palin KEEPS asking " Who is Obama?" . America needs not ask
"Who is Sarah Palin?" . After 6-WEEKS i really dont know her. And most of America never heard of her before then. She is the real UNKNOWN! WHO IS SARAH PALIN? Elected by one man and now she goes on inciting hate and mob slurs against Obama who was elected by Millions of Americans. WHO IS SARAH PALIN? All of a sudden, 6 weeks is enough for us to know her but 4 years is not enough for us to know and appreciate Obama? All of a sudden she has more rights than Obama and the rest of us all? She is more special?
Where are the REAL EVANGELICALS? Have they been watching their so called Christian candidiates as they disgrace christiandom with their uterances? All of a sudden Obama cant be president because he is black even though he is more qualified? Are we no longer the same in the eyes of God? Where are the real Evangelicals? Black people have always voted mostly 70-90% for Democratic party but all of a sudden when the democratic nominee is black voted in by mostly white people, the black man is accused by republicans of voting for him because he is black. May God Help Us.

Okay, CNN, what happened to my submitted comment. It was "awaiting moderation" and now is no where to be found. I guess I spoke the truth once again and you don't like that. You can moderate all you want but I am still going to exercise my right to send in a comment. I have never said anything but the truth of how I feel. If that doesn't meet with your censorship then so be it.

McFalin,
I'm so glad that Obama is leading and you are about to lose. What time is it now? Isn't it about time for you two(McFalin & Moose Shooter) to go your own way and campaign like Barack and Biden? Didn't you see both Barack and Biden have been doing their own things in different times at different places. If your VP(Lipstick on a pig) is that dump, you don't deserve to win. Period! Bye Palin and McFalin.

Howard   October 9th, 2008 6:19 pm ET

GOOD!!! McCain's campaign is shameful, disgusting and an insult to any intelligent American. If he loves his country so much then his choice for Vice President would have been would have been different and not one to provide sensationalism and entertainment fo the anti-intellectual Republicans who have loved Bush and his administration so much for the last 8 years. Republicans have removed hundreds/thousands of qualified voters because they had the same name as a convicted felon; even though these people had never been convicted of a felony they were denied the right to vote.

We needs to send a loud and clear message, first for our country and second to rebuild our party. People like Palin and anyone connected to Bush needs to move on. We need new blood, a strong country and be back with a party that can again lead us into the future in the next election.

N.S. - don't worry about the voter suppression being attempted. Obama's campaign has dispatched attorneys in those areas to straighten out these issues and make sure that all eligible voters will be allowed to vote.

West Virginia and Montana are Republican strongholds and shouldn't even be in play. Last I heard, North Carolina – another Republican stronghold – was tied!! Go Obama/Biden! Yes we can!!

Democrats: Want to make sure the McCain/Palin nightmare goes away? Vote. Make sure you go to the polls or vote absentee. But vote. Registered Democrats by far outnumber registered Republicans. So make sure you vote, and make sure you get your friends to vote. If they haven't registered, and there's still time, then get them to register and then get them to vote. Offer to drive them. Hold an election day party and bring a crowd of friends to the polls with you. This is especially true for you high school and college Democrats. Don't blow this off. Your future is at stake...

Good news! The politics of fear, race-baiting and distraction currently being hawked by McCranky and his team of slime-merchants and half-wits is not going to deter Americans from voting in their best interest.

When is McSlime going to have guts enough to look Obama in the eye and spew his lies, instead of running scared in debates and then talking tough on tv?

Country first? Each day he continues on this un-American course of ignoring our problems and trying to scare voters, McAngrypants shows just how little he loves this country.

Watch out! You can be sure that Republican operatives are working hard to figure out ways to steal the election in states that are close. They did it in Florida in '00 and in Ohio in '04. Where will they turn up in '08? Where is Karl Rove these days? Whatever state he's in could be the next one to fall.

To Whom It May Concern,
It appears to me that those supposed " angry Republicans " shown
on CNN today at a McCain rally are nothing more than " plants " to stir
up the republican base. Watch McCain's body language and he does
not seem to be surprised at the outburst. He even " hugs " one of the
disenchanted as if it was staged. It appears to me to be nothing more
than a phoney setup. Any chance CNN can look into this?

I know, stupid me! i WILL NOT MAKE THAT MMISTAKE TWICE! I am so proud of America right now. The racial barrier is broken and I love this country for it. Obama represents both Black and White people. I am worried about the voter registration rolls. This election is too important to have issues which caused problems in the last two elections. There is already concern about sufficient ballots, poll workers as some states are expecting record turn out.
As N.S. of Huntsville states, voters should check to make sure you are registered before getting to the polls. I would think a simple phone call to the city in which you live would suffice.

Thank you Lord!!! I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. Let me tell you, I am tired of living in fear. I want to be optimistic about the future and Obama gives me that feeling. My husband and I are in fear of losing our jobs, unable to retire when the time comes, getting sick and the medical bills wiping us out; unable to afford college for our two teen boys. Don't take me wrong, I have worked all my life and don't expect the government to solve all my problems, but at least even out the playing field for working stiffs like us. I feel that for the last eight years we have been running like heck just to stay in place to no avail.

I WANT MY COUNTRY and MY GOVERNMENT BACK!!! God bless Barack Obama and may the Lord grant him the wisdom and the strength to guide the country back into the right path as everyone knows he has a lot of work ahead of him after the Bush Administration.

The economy trumps over the smear because the very people that McCain is targeting to receive the sleeze are the ones who are suffering the most. In the past republicans waved the flag, shouted God bless America and anything less was anti- American. Not with-standing the sutle references to being anti- anything but white. Yes this worked for Nixon, Reagan and the Bushes. Foreclosures, jobs outsourced overseas, high gas prices, high unemployment and the recent Wall street bailout are factors that most people understand. I don't think they can really imagine MCain and Palin changing anything.

"Yes, here's our leader. He's a failed community organizer who has ties to rascist ministers, unrepentant terrorists, and illegal groups. He managed to steal the election with the help of many, many, illegal votes. He's raised our taxes, closed our businesses, made our country very unsafe and open to attacks. But on the plus side, he looks dreamy, Oprah likes him, and if you look just right you can see his halo. Now don't go saying anything negative about him, because the second you do we will brand you as a rascist! And if you even think about asking him something of substance, boy are you gonna get it!"

Palin is a foul mouthed liar who is inciting the lowest of the low, the racists, bigots, skinheads, ignorant and seemingly has no shame or conscience. She has the nerve to say Obama isn't experienced, look at her, she's a moron! mccain sold his soul and his integrity to run a muck raking campaign because he has put himself and his political ambitions first, ahead of this country. McCain's Social Security Income: I'm a 53 year old male Independent 'middle of the road' voter. Months ago when John McCain released his tax returns I noted that he is drawing social security along with a military pension. I don't dispute that he is entitled to both, but it really bothers me that a Man with John's and Cindy's wealth is receiving monthly social security payments. He obviously doesn't need the income and considering the problems with funding the entitlement programs it seems to me to be very unpatriotic and selfish for him to draw SS benefits. I have not seen any comments about this during the election season which I follow closely. Doesn't anyone think this reflects on McCain's character?

ajks   October 9th, 2008 6:05 pm ET

McCain doesn't have a clue!!!

Enlightened Voter   October 9th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

As long as the repugs don't try to cheat in this election too, Obama will win. And if he runs the white house like he has his campaign we will be fine! Actually better than fine. See what the repugs don't realize is that most people are now enlightened and the negativity, lies and vindictiveness that john and sarah are putting out are turning people off. This country is moving beyond all that and this race is helping us to do that. But those two (mccain and palin ) aren't enlightened and they don't understand that. Only the unenlightened person will vote for mccain and palin.

John   October 9th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

I am glad the majority of the American people are not buying into the McCain/Palin dirty politics. John McCain has lost any shred of decency he had left. I would have voted for him in 2000, even though I am a Democrat, but there is no way I could ever vote for a man who hides behind the skirts of his VP nominee and his wife. If you have something to say, say it, and not just on Faux news where you are treated with kid gloves. Go on "Meet the Press" or better yet go on "Countdown" or AC 360 and answer the hard questions like Obama did on the "O'reilly Factor."

Brendan H., San Antonio, TX   October 9th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

Fear not, John McCain, the Bushbots will be coming out in full force for you any time now – just like they did in South Carolina in 2000!

McCain, you're getting hosed by Bush, and Bush doesn't care!!!

Dan, TX   October 9th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

The republicans will be much better off with an Obama win. They can blame the difficult times ahead on the democrats while they sit back and regroup.

Calling all republicans! Save the republican party and vote for Obama.

Beverly, NYC   October 9th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

When I look at the crowd at the Obama rallies, I see the America I live in, a rainbow of people coming together for a common cause. In NYC no one saw skin color on 911, same with Katrina or any natural disaster. Can't say I see the same diversity on the Republican side and they seem to like it this way, pity.

Thanks to our current president, the American public are scholars in Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Political Spin and we will never be foiled again. We are much smarter than we ever were and we will never forget the lessons learned.

Kudos to Obama for leading us by example already. He has a very loyal and newly intelligent citizenry eager to fix this great country of ours.

Good for Obama.... won't take 30 minutes to dispel the hateful stupidiity of the McCain camp, then he will have time to truly share the vision he has. Obama is an intelligent, articulate, thoughtful and excellent man. Such a shame he has to put up with the "Alice in Wonderland" b.s. from the cheshire cat and the madhatter with lipstick.!!!! I'm a Canadian and look forward to a presidency south of the border of sanity! What you do in the U.S. certainly affects Canada in many ways. Just as an aside... McCain mentioned the Canadian system of healthare with disdain. I am an senior... pay $2.00 for prescriptions, have excellent health care and would not go bancrupt in a catastrophic illness. Just to set the record straight!!!!

chris24   October 9th, 2008 6:02 pm ET

I hope this is a lasting message about negative campaigning, if nothing else. It is time to put fear-mongering and hatred driven campaigning to bed.

We are in for a tough time with the economy, but, at least we don't have to listen to the name-calling and devisive slogans much longer.

I look forward to a new era in our country. One based on true faith in ourselves and not some phony retorical crap by those who would lie to each and every one of us just to get elected.

Rock on Barack, put the past behind us and truly, "let's roll".

Looks Like OBAMA is cruising now.

READ YOUR HISTORY BOOK PEOPLE....ITS ALWAYS A DEMOCRAT THAT SAVES THE DAY! WWI, WWII, KOREA, CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS.......and

all you REGAN LOVERS: What did Ronald Regan ever do in his 8 years? Lets see, Nancy ran the last two years he was in office because he had become too unstable. He didnt outspend the Russians that was a little Texas Congressman named Charlie Wilson (but daddy REGAN) got the credit! Oh he gave us Iran Contra and 250.00 toilet seats...remember those? So other than bomb Lybia just what did he do? Fire the AT controllers and put this nation in a deadly situation....sure he could speak (HE WAS AN ACTOR) but not much else....he wa sall talk with a "Cowboy Persona" ...alot of hot air...

Now Obama is in the mold of John F. Kennedy a GREAT president who did so much more for this country in 3 years than Regan did in eight! Too bad those two couldn't have debated...JFK would have kicked his butt! This country needs smart leaders like JFK...like Dr. King, like RFK! Like OBAMA!

we need SMART PEOPLE not SMRT people (Bush, McCain/Palin)

It is not fun when you have to constantly living in pins and needles to figure out how you are going to pay your bills and groceries. What about you are worried and stressed out in the middle of the night about tomorrow and the future..you developed migraine headaches, depressions, stomach aches or just aches all over your body! Barack Obama always remained calm, cool, and collective which he and Biden will do their very best to help us pull out of the quagmires that hit us so badly.

FACT CHECK SAYS REPEATEDLY, TIME AFTER TIME THAT McCAIN AND PALIN'S REMARKS ARE "FALSE" AND "MISLEADING" AND YET THEY CONTINUE TO TRY TO BAMBOOZLE AMERICANS. HOW STUPID DO THEY THINK AMERICANS ARE. NO WONDER THE USA'S REPUTATION IS NOW DIRT, AFTER 8 YEARS OF BUSH THE BUSH REPUBLICANS .....AND REGARDLESS OF THE MAVERICK CRAP ... BUSH IS A REPUBLICAN. IF McCAIN WAS A MAVERICK, HE WOULD BE ON THE TICKET WITH BOB BARR. AT LEAST BOB BARR HAS SOME INTEGRITY,

People are hurting and they are talking about man who is not even running for President. That his opponent does not even speak to. People are just seeing who the best leader will be.

The more McCain slips back the more desperate – and silly – he becomes. He wants to chance the race to being between him and Billy Ayers. Sorry McCain, that song and dance isn't playing very well. It's STILL the economy and will remain so. P.S. The Republicans need to stop nominating their presidential candidates based on "senority." They nominated one of the weakest individuals possible, and now they are reaping their just desserts (they did the same thing in 1996 – Bob Dole). Mitt Romney would have been stronger and not tied so much to the economic situation

With the way the polls are going it looks like Obama has a great chance to be the next president. This is great news, however, no one should sit on their laurels about the lead as one never knows what can happen. Hopefully, he will continue this lead and become our next president.
The only problem I see is the hate mongers being baited by the likes of Mrs. McCain and Mrs. Palin. It is amazing how Senator McCain can stand there and let their remarks be made. BUT, from the smirk on his face he is enjoying it since he apparently is thinking the same thing but does not want the people to be able to blame him for saying the outrageous remarks. He does say very subtle remarks with a silly grin and then claims he is only joking. Well, hate mongering statements are NOT jokes. What kind of a man is he to stand behind the skirts of these two women and have them do his dirty work. Then again, THAT is the kind of a man he is as far as I am concerned.

One of the interesting things about the McCain campaign is that McCain is offering a plan to buy failing mortgages while at the same time attacking socialism.

I'm not going to get upset with the government if they temporarlly buy partial ownership of our troubled banks in an effort to ease the credit crunch and shore up the economy. I think a slight dip into socialism is preferable to a total global economic meltdown, which is what we are facing if we don't let the government take action to stem the current crisis, even if it means a slight trend toward socialism.

Socialism is not the same thing as communism. There are plenty of countries that have some for of socialism that aren't communist. We already have socialist programs (i.e. social security).

So this is just another McCain scare tactic and nothing more.

I'm a liberal. I am not a socialist. Normally I would be against socializing private institutions but I think this crisis is too deep to avoid it. I believe any move toward socialism will be temporary and only to keep the economy from a total meltdown, which appears to be the direction it's currently heading.

Statistically the economy does better with a Democrat in the presidency. I think Obama will do a better job of resolving this crisis than McCain.

Joe-From NY...once Republican, VOTING DEMOCRAT   October 9th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

I'm a Republican, and the prospect of Obama in the White House is great news, not just to me, but to hundreds of my acquaintances who are sick of the nonsense John McCain and his VP choice have been spouting; it's racist and it's offensive to most Americans, who have real problems to worry about. McCain and Palin, it seems, could care less about America; all they care about is some aging hippy who once did things that were wrong but who is not a respected professor admired by Republicans, Independents, and Democrats alike. I'm beginning to wonder if McCain's brain trust isn't hoping to incite some nut case to try to harm the Democratic ticket. That's how awful I feel about my own party. Thank God for Obama in these precarious times.

daddyscott_1999   October 9th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

Most anti-tax rhetoric is disingenuous, including Senator McCain’s. How else do you pay for new things, like bailouts? You RAISE TAXES. Heck, we are well beyond the point where even if we stopped all new spending entirely, we would still have to raise taxes to try and pay down the ENORMOUS and unmanageable government debt, most having been acquired under Bush’s eight years of executive leadership (six with a legislative majority) caused mostly by his ill-advised war in Iraq and equally ill-advised tax cuts.

Let’s not talk about “no new taxes” just for the sake of being anti-tax. Instead let’s decide what is worth spending money on (like developing alternative forms of energy and other new, exportable technologies, education, and perhaps healthcare) with the understanding that the most probable way to pay for such things is new taxes. These are INVESTMENTS, folks. The results are prosperity and security. These are investments that are worth the risk, unlike a war in Iraq (which was a Rumsfeld design for a U.S. military “demonstration”, which obviously has gone very wrong: see the FRONTLINE Episode called “Rumsfeld’s War”) and a Trillion Dollar bailout for greed in America.

Taxes must be increased to try and generate enough revenue to climb out of this hole Republicans dug for us. It is they that got the “spend” part of “tax and spend” just right. That is why we are in deep doodoo. That is why arguments like, “OMG, he’s gonna raise taxes,” and “He’s a tax-and-spend liberal,” are disingenuous. You have to raise money for new spending. Any discussion that does not recognize this cannot be taken seriously.

Good! Now he can entertain the thoughts of economist about all these mortgages clogging up our credit system. I read in your news yesterday how a couple economist believed to look at the 30 year mortgages and help "everyone" across the board, not just the mortgages clogged in the $700b rescue-out.

David   October 9th, 2008 5:52 pm ET

I hope that these polls truly reflect the intentions of the people who provided the information.

Obama should continue to gain ground considering that McCain is doing something that he himself basically condemned back in 2000 and that is running negative ads. When I read his words from 2000 he is essentially telling the voters that he has no vision of the future because the only thing he is doing is running a negative campaign against his opponent and not offering solutions to the American people.

Obama is a great choice for us in these troubled times. America needs to regain her lost footing from the past eight years and unfortunately, McCain is woven from the same cloth as George Bush. His "bomb, bomb Iran" may have been a joke but it reflects who he is what his ideas are. Obama will not attack Pakistan, he will go after Bin Laden.

Besides, it is very un-American and undemocratic to lie and mislead the pollsters and anyone who does it should be ashamed of themselves. If that is how you behave perhaps you would like to move to and live in countries that have no elections, where protests are not allowed, where freedom of speech does not exist, where if you oppose the government you could go to prison or even lose your life.

I am not ageist but do feel McCain is too old to be voted in as president and it is time for those of the older generation to hand over the reigns to the younger generation who are the ones who need to be shaping the future of our country now.

Compare the crowds that come support Obama to the crowd that supports McCain (and what they say), and then look at me and with a straight face say that racism doesn't still exist. You can't. Face it. Most people against Obama, especially those who used to support Sen. Clinton, are racist.

And, McCain is hiding behind his two female attack dogs Palin and Cindy raging an imaginary war against a terrorist who threatens his dream to the white house! Both McCains and Palin intentionally stir up hatry in their supporters and they will be liable for their despicable actions!

John McCain is a coward and a chauvinist!

Max, Austin TX   October 9th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

I really can't believe McCain has a lead in any polls, espeically in light of the awful state of the economy, which was a direct result of the policies of the past 8 years that he supported. What on earth are people who support him thinking? They must not be thinking clearly, because if they were they would understand that he was a big reason we are in this mess, and that electing him would result in more of the same. Just his health care policy alone should be enough to scare the heck out of anyone. Taxing your employer provided health care benefits? That is utterly ridiculous. Is that man crazy? Not to mention his and Palin's recent decision to focus on spiteful, hateful attacks against Sen. Obama, which are extremely distasteful and makes me very concerned about the future of this country if there are actually people who support him in that. What's going on now with their campaign has crossed the line of decency and they should put a stop to it before someone gets hurt. Disgusting.

McCain has a choice. He could either be remembered as defeated after running a dignified campaign or he can be remembered as lost after a bitter and divisive campaign. He is leaning towards the latter by sticking to the kitchen sink strategy.

Polls can be manipulated to reflect whatever the heck the pollster wants them to reflect either by the way the question is worded, by who is polled, or just be the location of the poll.

My concern is that news agencies are reporting electoral votes for both candidates. I checked my calendar and it's only October 9th. We haven't had an election so how can we be counitng electoral votes? Jumping the gun a bit, aren't we?

Of course, they're lying. He admitted it in his memoir. Let's see if McCain will bother to admit how much he cheated on his first wife, not just with Cindy Lou, but with countless other women. I'm guessing the answer is no. He and his running mate are ethically and morally bankrupt.

I'm an independent who supported Bush in 2000. But:
Reasons I'm not voting for McCain:
1) The layer of Bush political appointees in Washington need to be cleansed.
2) Lacking the courage (or judgment) to admit that invading Iraq was a mistake and violation of international law. That the US was deceived into it.
3) The Republican party needs a shock to come back clean and strong in a few years. It shouldn’t continue the way it is now. They don’t own it.
4) The campaign is reusing all the dirty tricks the Bush campaign used in 2004 to deceive voters.
5) The hype about Christian values: Gay marriage and similar issues can only be regulated at the State and local level. All the federal government can do is use the issues as political stunts.

Reasons I’m voting for Obama:
1) The campaign has been very smart and consistent. That’s the way to run a big organization. Also never attempted to twist principles.
2) The democrats after the deserved defeat of 2000 came back years later as a stronger and clearer party. Trusted leaders such as Kennedy saw the future in Obama and endorsed him.
3) The hype about Obama being unpatriotic: If we suspect the patriotism of our Senators, then we have a much bigger problem. Also all the efforts of the Republican dirt unraveling machinery couldn’t come up with anything significant to taint him.

It's the economy. No one cares about Ayers, Trooper-gate, Wright, or Keating-5. As long as the economy is the #1 issue Obama will continue to pull ahead. I don't see how this won't stay the #1 until November 4th. McCain can't win on the issues and is going negative. 33% of Obama's ads are negative and 100% of McCain's ads are negative accoring to a new poll out of Wisconsin. It is starting to look good for Obama, but 4 weeks is an eternity in an election. Lets up these numbers can hold.

Lori from MO   October 9th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

ugh. Come on Missouri! We've picked the Pres in all but one election for the last 50 years. We don't want to break our record! We are the Show Me state, not the "tell me anything and I'll believe you state". Look at the policies, look at the vision for our future. Look at the ACTIONS of the candidates this election season.

On Fannie/Freddie: The New York Times has published a list looking at contributions from "directors, officers, and lobbyists for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac" for the 2008 campaign cycle. That list — using figures from the Federal Election Commission — shows McCain receiving $169,000, while Obama received only $16,000.

On leading our country out of this economic mess, Obama is being guided by Warren Buffet (whom McCain called out in debate #2 as someone who would be good at fixing our economy) while McCain has Phil Gramm. Back in the '80s, Gramm smiled upon the abrupt deregulation of the savings-and-loan industry. He used his political clout to protect the Texas operators whose crooked machinations eventually helped to bankrupt the S&L industry. In fact, the S&L debacle cost taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars. PHIL GRAMM IS MCCAIN'S CURRENT CHIEF ECONOMIC ADVISOR.

WAKE UP MISSOURIANS!

Taking a bigger lead.   October 9th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

Obama is taking a bigger lead in this election because he's running a brilliant campaign focused on the issues facing America and the world. While the McCain campaign is focused on who had tea with who.

The dow dropped 679 points today, we are headed for a depression and the McCain camp wants you to divert your attention away from the economy and focus on Ayers and Wright. Sorry I cannot when in a week I've lost $10,000 dollars from my 401k.

All I know is I want the repubs out of the White House. They have completely tore down this country in the eight years they have had control. Just look at history...the repubs have always put this country in peril....Im not about to let that happen again. And I dont give a darn what Klondike Barbie does or says...she needs to hightail it back to Alaska..where she most likely will not be reelected governor. Ken amundsen   October 9th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

To the commentaries, to the news anchors, to the people of America, some of you ask, some of you speculate, some of you try to guess why? Why are Barack Obama and Joe Biden gaining ground in the polls? Folks its simple, just do as I have done and watch these campaign events for a day or two. Back to back, start to finish. The Obama campaign is firmly connected. They are a positive force, an uplifting force, a make you feel good force. The McCain group is dramatized , doom and gloom. They spread a negative layer so thick, so blue it feels heavy on the soul. Just from the motivational spirit alone with out the issues the McCain camp loses. Then you add this crises to it and the drama that John and Sarah add and even if they had the magic answers they could never really be heard to their full potential. The sarcasm, the doom and gloom and the feel of panic instability and confusion are cringe points that make the polls what they are today and guess what? I'm no pro but its gonna get much much much worse for them because all in all people just want to feel good and the Mcain/Palin ticket cant deliver on that and that my friend is why the polls have shifted and the trend will only get stronger and stronger every single day and guess what? I am a white republican 54 yrs old and I to will vote for Barack because he just to say it simply. makes me feel good about me, my country and he gives me hope. I have gotten to know him and love him with all my heart, I fully predict a landslide, and this man whom came from nowhere has truly earned the place he and his family have in my heart, YES WE CAN! Please go back into the woods with your sister.

johnd   October 9th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

I was a republican, but the fiscal irresponsibility of Mr. Bush and the rest of the party made me leave. John McCain then comes in with a proposed $600 Billion tax break that he will pay for by eliminating $18 Billion in pork. The only republicans left that I know are either very religious and vote only on abortion, or they are also fiscal conservatives who haven't had time to really investigate what republicans have done to this county. I show those people my graphs and McCain's plan, and most of them are in shock. They either won't vote or will vote Obama. Fiscal conservatives had a home under Bush1 (after he raised taxes), but those days are long gone. I basically don't have a political party representing me anymore. There are 47 Blue Dog Democrats who care about the budget, but that is it. $400 billion we'll pay on interest for the debt this year. So, if you are only voting based on abortion, please ask your representative to ensure a good future for those kids. It seems silly to condemn them to second world status just because our politicians either can't lead or are so uninformed that they ignore our childrens' future.

If he has convinced enough of them to to overlook the color of his skin and vote for him for their economic interests than that is a testament to the man he is and the campaign he has run. He truly does have the power to bring people together. I have a feeling I am going to be very proud of my country in 26 days.

Ohio for OB &JB   October 9th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

GO "THAT ONE" . I am from Ohio and I love it. It is time to get this country back to the beautiful and stable country it once was. I am proud to say that I take vacation days off from my job to help Obama in Ohio. I am very lucky to have a great job and make good money but when I look at all the people suffering around me it makes me sad. I want to see "THAT INTELLIGENT, COOL, CALM AND COLLECTIVE" ONE in office. Not Moose Lady or Mr Hair Transplant.

GO OBAMA

Throughout the race, the polls have seemed to waiver back and forth, often influenced by recent events.

But because of the desperate world wide reaction to the financial crisis, and the perception in the US that the Republicans are largely to blame, I'm not sure McCain can recover.

If the polls say so it must be so.
But none of the hundreds of people I deal with everyday believes that.

I prey we can stay on this path. Obama is truly the right candidate to lead during these troubling times. Hopefully McShame's attempt to distract us with empty accusations will not work. Everyone needs to do what they can to convince their unsure neighbors that Obama is our best hope for a better tomorrow.

Advise to McCain:

Put Country 1st : Have Palin resign and select the best Republican candidate for the job. This is the public's main reason for not trusting your judgment.

Tell the Truth : Stop the lies, fear-mongering and respect your opponent. If you can't respect your adversary, you are no different than Bush.

Be A Maverick : Get rid of all the lobbyists and bush smear gurus in your campaign and then we may see you as a real maverick of the 2000s.

Then maybe you could win !!!

McCain in Wisconsin today was ask if he is elected president will he hold those responsible for the mortgage problems. McCain answered yes, and I know who they are and he went on to name Congressman Frank and Dodd but he failed to name his own son, Andrew McCain who was CEO over Silver Bank that failed in August '08; his son quit 2 months before it's failure. This is the Honorable Senator McCain who did nothing to warn Silver Bank investors before they lost their money and McCain had to know, he was in Arizona every weekend during this time. FACT.

TangoDancer   October 9th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

Hang in there Barack! We're giving it everything that we can for you in Ohio. It's been a brutal battle here and for a long time it seemed that this lead in the polls – though small – would never have been possible. You're an inspiration for us, and that is what has kept us going through this long journey. We'll be there for you in full force on November 4th. You can count on that.

Chris K   October 9th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

The more John McCain and his surrogates go negative the larger the gap is going to be. McCain just doesn't seem to get it that people are tired of this old-style politics. Barack Obama has run an honorable campaign and has acted presidential throughout the process. McCain's erratic behavior makes it clear that he would be a risky choice for president. Add to that the fact that McCain showed incredibly poor judgement in selecting Sarah Palin as his running mate.

Chris   October 9th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

Barring a monumental watershed moment (like a terrorist attack) and barring racial prejudices inside the voting booth we don't yet know about, it will be extraordinarily difficult for McCain to win this election.

Regardless of pole numbers we the people must vote! Do not think for one minute that anything has been decided, because we have seen poles be very wrong.

I was at a rally in Jacksonville, FL and was surprised by the turnout. My only concern was the large turnout would give false hope and leave some not to vote on election day. Do not be fooled.

The more they attack us the more we move up in the polls.

The more McCain and his supporters get desperate by clinging on to the Ayers story, the more we move up in the polls.

McCain supporters are now perciving McCain as weak for not mentioning Ayres and Accorn. But the fact is that McCain cant really mention it , because he knows that Obama had nothing to do with this issues and McCaiin just doesnt have any facts to base his arguments on. This is a losing battle.

Poor and desperate John McCain, Maybe 2012 years oops you would be too old, and Palin is just too unintelligent to run for office.

Remember four years ago when John Kerrey was way ahead of Bush in the polls and lost? These polls mean nothing and most of them are in the margin of error. And besides these polls are biased.

Grace   October 9th, 2008 5:33 pm ET

Senator Barak Obama’s message of change and his courage to take on the challenges of the 21rst Century are not based on the past but the future of this country. This reinforces my confidence in him as a leader. Senator Obama’s message is a new message which does not seek to identify with the past or with past presidents' successes. His vision of change and grasp of the issues that face Americans in the 21rst century are evident. He has not built his resume on the past successes of others. He has looked at the failures and is willing to lead this country in a new direction based on lessons learned. So when I heard Jeff Greenfield on CBS after the Tuesday, 10/7 debate make the statement, "Senator Obama channeling Bill Clinton" I am amazed. Senator Barack channels no one unless perhaps the hopes of many Americans.

If Senator Obama is elected, I believe he will become one of those presidents that future presidential Candidates will strive to emulate.

My question is this: If you are such a courageous leader, such a "maverick," and believe so strongly in the lies you are spreading about Obama, then WHY DIDN'T YOU HAVE THE GUTS TO MAKE THESE ACCUSATIONS TO HIS FACE AT THE DEBATE?

Senator McCain, I have no reservations whatsoever in calling you a coward and a dishonorable, desperate man. And to think I used to like you!

Polls are one thing and in a fair and just world the election would be controversy free, but after the 2004 stolen election of "W" who got us into the mess we're in now, we're still uneasy knowing the republican party and their cohorts will stoop to any level and break any law to keep the their party in power no matter how old or incompetent they are (i.e. dumb and dumber). Watching Sarah's lack of knowledge about anything except being a maverick is frightening and I believe McCain was truly irresponsible to not only his party but all of the american people when he chose her simply because she could wear a dress and lipstick. Beauty nly get you so far but she has to read and be informed as well ... wink, wink.

I don't want someone that spreads hatred and who takes six years to graduate college. This great country must not be dragged down with words of fear and violence. We are better than that.

While I respect McCain's veteran status he is too risky to run this country. His violent personality and non directions is not what we need. In another year his nonsense may fly but I care too much about my family, my kids, and my country.

Preco, NY   October 9th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

America, hope of the free world is awake at last!!!

McCain has continously shown how erratic and out of touch he really is. How on earth did he stumble on Sarah Palin?

The challenges of the 21st century requires the leader of the free world to be one who can form alliances with other world leaders, be able to free America from the dependece on foreign oil, strengthen the US Economy , build and sustain a modern and well equipped military, use the military only when America is threatened ( not fight personal agenda)

McCain has shown he is not ready for the 21st century – he is living in denial, McCain has proven that he is erratic, McCain has proven ( with a most outrageous VP pick) to think of his ambitions first.

McCain, my friend (or is it fellow prisoner?) I got news for you , you are not only out of touch you are completely clueless!!!

The best thing that can happen to Conservatism is to let Obama make a bad situation infinitely worse during the next four years. Predictions: First, Obama will not be able to raise any taxes and will be forced to continue the Bush tax cuts and still end up with unemployment over 8% by 2010 (mid-term election). He will have to reneg on health care. Second, within six months following the election Obama will face a geopolitical catastrophe in the Middle East.
I cannot wait to wipe out the Democrats in 2010 and make Barack a toy of the Republican congressional majority.

Why honestly wouldn't he be ahead when the media keeps repeating the mantra over and over? When those in the media, including CNN keep saying McCain is negative without putting the same criteria to Obama, when the media discuss fact checking with statements where Obama is always true and McCain is always lying, then when oratory skills always make you the better debater by default, then when it is hammered over and over that not voting for Obama means you are a racist, etc. etc. etc. I am surprised the likes of CNN and the rest of the media don't suggest just suspending your elections and crowning him now. It seems in watching this for over a year now it was obvious they decided he would be your next President right from the start.

This is pleasant news to hear. After watching and reading how the mccain camp has decided to lower themselves (even further) into the mud. The anger & hate was becoming overwhelming. Mccain is clearly insighting hate-you will have to answer for the Mr Mccain at some point. This cannot be explained away by using your POW static. Or that you are a Maverick..Or after you lose, just turn around a apologize. It is obvious that he has sold his soul & that others have taken over his campaign-if he can't lead his own campaign, wh makes you think he can run the country?
At his age & medical history he can drop dead any minute-which then he left the country in the hands of an ignorant, stupid (I am through being P.C.)...he has lost his marbles & she is just plain stupid–enough of settling for the least qualified to lead!!!

I believe "the economy stupid" has something to do with this. But, I can't help at think about how Obama's cool and calm handling of recent crisis vs McCain's freakish and desperate flip flopping all over the place may have resonated with voters enough that.... it no longer was a matter of "who is the real Barack Obama?". Everyone knew who John was and not who Barack was. Getting a look at them both in action has shown a spot light on the fact that McCain is a loose cannon who lacks judgement and Obama is, simply put, way more presidential than his opponent.

McCain want to balance the budget by 2013.
The problem is he doesn't know yet how the deficit may looks like in 3 months.
Bush made the same promise to cut in half in 2004 election and where are we now?

He said he know how to fix the social security. And the solution is commission. Or he pledge to not raise tax how can he be open to a commission and not open to raise tax in order to fix the social security?

We saw this movie before ... that will not work again. This year2008 is different.

Great news, but let's not get cocky. We all need to make sure we get out and vote on Nov. 4. Time to take back our country.

I am a Democrat and I am voting for Obama, I am a white woman of 61 years.........I have watched Obama and last night Michelle on Larry King Live......do you know how wonderful it was to hear her talk, with intelligence, grace, kindness just like listening to Obama give a speech. So different from listening to McCain and his wife and Palin. They should take some lessons from the Obama's.......I to listen to McCain, but he is so negative and so is Palin, they only have hate, racistism, anger and the same old.... same old ....same old .....speeches.....Now his wife has cold chills running down her spine.......she needs to look at how her own husband voted on moneys for Iraq before she spews out crap like that.........

Obama leading in West Virginia?? Maybe this guy really isn't a terrorist.

McCain still suffers from PTSD   October 9th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

Watch McCain loses Arizona. The word is the Republicans are asking for new ballots to include a 'No Confidence' box in place of McCain's name. They are also looking into voting for Obama PLUS checking off the No Confidence box to send a strong message; neither Republicans or Democrats will stand by while McCain destroy our country with his racist remarks or Klan rallies.

Margo - TEXAS   October 9th, 2008 5:28 pm ET

I love Barack Obama!!! He's such an intelligent level headed man and he's not bad to look at either.

Curtis - Marietta, GA   October 9th, 2008 5:28 pm ET

McCain has been asking a lot recently if we should trust Obama's judgment and the choices that he's made in the past. If he has the "judgment and candor" to be president.

I would say that these polls speak for themselves!

McCain will win with fraud because their is no other way.

Peter from OH   October 9th, 2008 5:28 pm ET

The McCain campaign will now walk the last remaining strategy: Leave the land to the winner, but destroy it and burn the houses as much as possible:
OK, could SOMEBODY out there please START TALKING about the fact that the McCain / Palin language has become unbearable in recent days, with BS like “do we really know who Barack Obama is?”, “..but what does he REALLY stand for?”, “..what do we really know about Obama”, “he’s too risky” bla bla bla rarara. This is the SAME vague firestarter type language the NSDAP party used in Germany to fire up the Germans against the Jews in the early years. READ THE HISTORY BOOKS, FOR HEAVENS SAKE!!!
Already, the Republican campaign events have become a foundation of hate and racism, as a recent NYT editorial describes it in a frightening way, like the fact that, at a rally in Florida, "a man yelled “kill him!” (Obama) during a Palin speech, and others shouted epithets at an African-American member of a TV crew".
I also suspect the McCain campaign deliberately put out Palin as their future scapegoat to do the bulk of the dirty work, so that, when this is ever discussed openly in public, or even worse, something unspeakable happen to Obama, they can hide behind the “well she is inexperienced and didn’t know better, and we don’t have anything to do with this”-curtain.
Are we going insane? This is the first time I am truly frightened about what is going on in the GOP, and some of their followers. They become radical haters.
I am unwilling to believe the majority of the Republican party is backing up these recent events; they just don’t dare to interfere with McCains campaign so they shut up. But the danger here is that in the meantime, the McCain campaign steers an audience that might produce some individuals with uncontrollable hate and anger, and which eventually become walking time bombs and try to do things I don’t want to even mention.
Does McCain really want to go there? Well I guess he already did....

Sherry   October 9th, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Now let's put this in perspective here lol..............Imagine McCain and Palin sitting down and talking with heads of other countries lol.............claiming to be 'mavericks' lol.........McCain says.........'this is the way we do things, my friends' lol..........My Nanuck of the North and I just sit down and tell ya'll like it is..........you listen to us or we will get bad and start badmouthing ya'll over here lol...........we know what we're talkin' about because Nanuck here was in the PTA and is a soccer mom...........I was in the war, my friend lol...........I hung out at the bars alot when I should have been studying but I made it, my friends lol.............Now if ya'll are lucky enough lol I'll invite ya'll over to one of my seven homes someday............only if you agree with everything I'm tellin' ya now dammit lol............andd Nanuck here will be servin' up her 'maverick style' coffee and a long line of bullsh...t lol...........Now as I sit here typing this............I realize that is exactly what their campaign has been like...........on the other hand, Obama and Biden have stuck to the issues at hand.........like gentleman......Michelle Obama has been nothing but a true lady........a lady...........So, along with so many Americans...........I understand why McCain is going down the tubes.........I can see him buying votes though..........I wouldn't put it past him.........he's that desperate.........My thoughts............prayers..........and full support goes out to Senator Barack Obama and Senator Joe Biden..........and their families..........Sherry, from Missouri

Say it a'int so, Joe! Sarah better get that approval rating back up to 85% in Alaska because it looks like she'll need her job back come November 4. Unless, of course, John McCain can pull of the biggest, best razzle dazzle moves in presidental election history. Maybe he can tell the American people that his wife has enough money to bail the entire US government out.

Reality Check Richmond Virginia   October 9th, 2008 5:27 pm ET

don't they mean Virginia and not west Virginia?

Mikki, Washington, DC   October 9th, 2008 5:27 pm ET

Wow!! West Virginia!! I hope that the same people who are being polled will show up on election day and vote for Obama/Biden!! I can't wait until November 5th. Once and for all, we will know whether people can be judged by the content of their character rather than their racial heritage. For those of you who don't believe that the importance of race should not be discussed or acknowledged, get real!

What amazes me is not that Obama's leading in these polls but rather the fact that there's still people willing to vote for John McCain and especially Barbie Moose!

America, we made a mistake and elected Bush twice! Do you really think anyone is going to take us serious if we don't elect Obama and Biden? Think about this...

Mark, B'ham., Al.   October 9th, 2008 5:27 pm ET

Obama/Biden when I look into your eyes I see European Socialism/Wefare State and the downfall of America and her Constitution. With the #1 and #3 most Liberal Democrats in the Executive Branch and the Liberal democrtic party leadership, if they can really be called that, in the Legislature and the Liberal Justices making laws our Founding Fathers Dream of a Nation will disappear Forever! No longer will individuals be responsible for their actions and themselves, the State will take care of you from cradle to grave whether you work hard or do not work at all.

"To clarify, the Adler Planetarium requested federal support - which was not funded - to replace the projector in its historic Sky Theater, the first planetarium theater in the Western Hemisphere.... To remain competitive and ensure national security, it is vital that we educate and inspire the next generation of explorers to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math."

Linking a planetarium to national security may be a bit of a stretch, but the point is clear: McCain probably shouldn't count on the "science vote" this year.

Obama/Biden in 2008 and beyond!

tulsa   October 9th, 2008 5:27 pm ET

I am a Democrat, but that is not the reason I will be voting for Senators Obama and Biden on Nov. 4th. It’s because I believe we need to break from the divisive politics of the last 8 years. We have bullied our friends around the world to the point that we have few friends left. We have let our own freedoms be diminished by lack of oversight of the executive branch by the legislative and judicial. We have seen the Justice department become a political tool instead of a safeguard of our liberties. The Federal Courts are weighted for business and against the people. We need change that will undo the gridlock the Congress now suffers from. Beyond that we need a change in the attitude of partisanship that is eating away at the decent and civil atmosphere in our nation’s Capital. We demand respectful and honest discourse from our leaders.
Here's looking forward to a better day in America with Senators Obama and Biden as our President and Vice President and with a Democratic Senate and House of Representatives.
Be vigilant, because WE WILL BE. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. If you become enamored with your power, you will be voted out at the first opportunity.
Give the people a balanced budget, a strong defense, fair taxes and equal justice.
These things are more than pie-in-the-sky ideals. They are the foundation of our American experiment.
We will be watching. The American people have been awakened and have discovered our power. We reject corruption. We embrace hope. We long to live in peace and prosperity. There are many in the world who would see us fail. Some even in this country. As Barack Obama has said, we stand in a stronger position to deal with threats if we stand together with our brothers here and throughout the world. We must lead by example, not by force. We must talk with our friends and enemies alike. Create jobs through innovation, create a green economy based on clean renewable energy and rebuild our crumbling infrastructure. Rebuild our health care system and schools. Make us once again the envy of every country and share our prosperity, freedom and peace with the world.
We must reject hate. We must truly put "Country first". It's not a slogan, it's a way of life. We can be that shining city on the hill that our forefathers intended us to be.
We are Americans above all else. We are a family. We set for ourselves high goals and high expectations. We expect our leaders to be the BEST of our people. Don't let us down.

I hope that he continues to beat McCain. McCain and his "prisoners" are nothing but a bunch of haters. Literally. They have stirred up racial tensions in these bigots and hear them screaming these racial slurs at rallies and say nothing. I think Obama is truely a man with integrity and he is the candidate that puts country first! This man has been called a terrorist, muslim, everything in the book but a child of God and has yet to retaliate. Continue to stand strong Obama, no weapon formed against you shall prosper!! This is the man that I want as my President, not some angry man and his lynching mob.

Frank Canada   October 9th, 2008 5:26 pm ET

The fact Obama's lead in the polls is great news for people concerned about America's image throughout the world. With the McCain campaign spewing hateful and bigotted rhetoric and the spiteful and dangerous reactions from the people in their crowds has sure tarnished the U.S. citizens image.

The more Obama pulls away from McCain the better Americans look as it shows the average person simply isn't prepared to tolerate this terrible type of propaganda.

I just looked at the same time period 4 years back and Kerry was cruising along. But we all know what happened 4 years back.

So all Obama supporters (including self) we still have a long way to go. Let us look at the last election and make sure we are not complacent enough to snatch defeat from a victory

McCain is such a coward ... he wasn't man enough to accuse Obama of the lies his campaign has been spreading around directly to Baracks face. He's use to delivering his pay load from a plane ... after all, he wasn't actually on the ground in Vietnam facing his enemy face to face was he!

West Virginia!!! According to every map, this is a Republican stronghold. During the primary's these were the people who openly admitted they wouldn't vote for a black man. It is literally too dangerous to have an Obama ground game there like in other states. Yet...God love them, even people in West Virginia are choosing Obama over McCain.

Too many people are looking for any reason to not vote for Senator Obama, and the more people vocally supporting Barry the easier it will be for others to follow suit.

Obama supporters must stay focused. The get of the vote operation is essential for Obama to win. The McCain/RNC/FOXnews campaign is starting to yell pretty loud, so all of the falsehoods have to be beaten back with the truth, with hard facts, and with heavy dose of force.

LS, Austin, Texas   October 9th, 2008 5:22 pm ET

Wouldn't it be something if the whole map turned blue.

Austin, Texas is Obama territory – from what I've seen over the past several months. It would be nice to see Texas turn blue.

Glad to see Obama ahead in the polls – he deserves to be ahead. Obama is a good man and will work hard for us.
