An ethics watchdog group has asked the Senate to investigate whether Sen. McCain failed to disclose gambling winnings.

(CNN) – Ethics watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, commonly referred to as “CREW,” has requested that the Senate Ethics Committee investigate whether Sen. John McCain failed to disclose gambling earnings as required by federal law and the Senate’s own rules.

Click here to read CREW's request

Citing recent press reports, CREW alleges that McCain failed to disclose income earned from gambling on the personal financial disclosure forms he’s required to file as a senator. “Given Sen. McCain’s history of gambling on a regular basis over the years, it is nearly impossible to imagine that he never won over $200, the amount that triggers the reporting requirement,” CREW’s request says.

In the event the Senate Ethics Committee finds that McCain failed to disclose any gambling earnings, the watchdog group asks that the matter be turned over to the Department of Justice for a criminal investigation into whether McCain knowingly and willfully failed to disclose any winnings.

The McCain campaign has not responded yet to CNN’s request for comment about CREW’s request for an investigation.

Black and White for Obama   October 9th, 2008 8:52 pm ET

when u r lying to a person , u don't look at the person's eyes. or if you look sometimes u mispeak stumble, so it fair for Mccain not to look at Obama's eyes.

Well Mccflip flop will or won't stop lying until after the election when he conceed and caongratulate Obama.

He knew he has to stop talking about the economic because he said it it doesn't know anything . All his life he's been help , pushed through military school, pushed into rich my diorcing his wife to marry rich girl..

the question is why people know Mccain wants to lie to get into the highest Office and people still rally around him?

Brian   October 9th, 2008 8:52 pm ET

I hope they nail him good.

When he said he'd follow bin Laden to the gates of hell… he must have gotten confused and just went to hell without him to sell his soul to the devil.

McCain… you are scum and your campaign is a disgrace.

Elaine   October 9th, 2008 8:52 pm ET

Yes, check on him.
Since he has said he is 100% truthful and had nothing to hide. Since he is longer want to address the real issues facing the country, then we should play by his rule. On his gambling character. This is not the type of person you want in the WH.

cjg   October 9th, 2008 8:51 pm ET

So McCain gambles….now that is something the religious right will love……Since many southern states still cannot have a state lottery because it would bring in all sorts of unethical people.
Gambling is sinful to evangelicals.

sandee in Portland   October 9th, 2008 8:51 pm ET

Well, if he did disclosure any gambling winnings, he would be among the first of the "old time" senators to do so. These positions were never meant to be careers, folks. We need term limits on the house and the senate just like the presidency. I honestly believe that most people when they run for a position are doing it because they care about our country, but after having been in the position for more than 8 years, they forget about that and start enjoying the power and perks and use their positions for monetary gain only.

Texas Trail Dog,

When McCain looses the election, you should move to Alaska and let the pitbull with lipstick lead you. While you're at it, take all of McCain's supporters with you. You guys can start your own country!! How cool is that?

Pepou   October 9th, 2008 8:49 pm ET

Of course McCain is addicted to gambling ! And his wife is a drug addict. Nice pair. Not to mention that hysterical mad dog whom they are trying to stuff down our throat as VP.

So, tell me more about John and his first wife ? Was she sick and he
was having an affair with Cindy while she was sick and then what happened ? To get us to the point where he could marry Cindy ?

This is pretty cool, we don't have this excitement in Canada.

We do have the most stable Banking system in the world, Universal Health Care and Low taxes, but that isn't as interesting as all this
IMPORTANT STUFF that is going on in the U.S..

Andy - Atlanta, GA   October 9th, 2008 8:49 pm ET

Gambling is not a crime. McCain didn't cheat on taxes. He just profitted from the Bush tax cuts for the rich.

Anyway, let's get rid of both of them once & for all, instead of gambling with America.

Green Collar Worker   October 9th, 2008 8:49 pm ET

If he did it, it's an ethics violation. It's right to investigate and if nececessary prosecute… the only thing I have a problem with is the timing. Are they investigating any other members of Congress for this?

We already know that McCain has had issues with ethics in the past (Keating 5). Why should we believe he changed back then?

Amy   October 9th, 2008 8:44 pm ET

McCain and the RNC brought this on by requesting the audit of Obama. What's good for one is good for the other.

Allen in Hartwell, GA   October 9th, 2008 8:44 pm ET

Why isn't anyone the media talking about the mob atmosphere at McCain/Palin campaign rallys? After being incited by McCain and Palin, the mobs surrounding them appear ready to get a rope and lynch Obama!

This has to be the nastiest, most unAmerican campaign I've ever seen. Aren't there laws against inciting riots? These two and their supporters are threatening to destroy this country, and the media seems happy to urge them on.

Laurie, Phoenix   October 9th, 2008 8:43 pm ET

Perhaps his gambling strategies are like his economic strategies and he hasn't won money. It's not like he can't afford to lose over and over again…Cindy will keep him supplied.

Janine   October 9th, 2008 8:42 pm ET

R Phillippi -
I would be very concerned about who McCain is getting money from also. He has lobbyists on his staff that represent the interests of other countries. He even has lobbyists for Taiwan and Georgia.

Look who is talking, McCain who was a gambler, filled for incpm tax separatly from his wife, he is hiding a whole lot, there is a lot about McCain that meets the eye. A racist that used "that one" during his closing staement on the last debate.

Renee Villalon   October 9th, 2008 8:36 pm ET

I think that McCain needs a rest, all he is doing is hurting himself. So what if Obama tried drugs in school. As far as I know McCain could have done drugs in the service,we dont know that he did or didnt. But that has nothing to do with what is going on in our economic worries.
They need to stop going after one another and tell us a plan on how they are going to fix the mess or at least try to fix.McCain wake up smell the coffee. Please,The world is tried of listing to you.

Also, if W. was a better choice then, then why on earth would you vote for McCain now?…

Is he paying the voters and giving them microphones to stand up and yell out all these horrible things. And that lipstick wearing pitbull should pack up and go home. She's scary and very dangerous. She should be home looking after that poor little baby. I just can't imagine McCain in the White House with that blonde barbie Cindy as the First Lady. What goes around, comes around. With the way he has been acting on the campaign trail, I think it would be fair game to point out that, while he was not found guilty of criminal activities, he did not learn a thing from the "Keating Five" affair and still supported, and supports today, the relaxation of government oversight of banking practices. Which is, of course, what got all of them in trouble in the first place. Experience only matters if you can learn something from it.

McCain was censored by the Senate for his involvement in the Keating 5 scandal.

The Senate never censors anyone – not even Mark Foley … so it must have been very serious!

McCain was censored for lack of ethics and lack of judgment:

He still has no ethics (just look at his campaign) and no judgment (Palin; dashing to DC to "fix" the economy he just said was fundamentally strong.)

james   October 9th, 2008 8:11 pm ET

Who cares? How about a story on Barr or Nader for a change? Yes, for a real "change." It's repulsive just how obvious the media blackout is on the alternative candidates. The press is supposed to keep us informed here in America, so that we can react to Washington appropriately. But it seems to be working consciously to keep us uninformed about our options. It's sad.

Look at McCain and Palin too—why is it that the GOP and evangelicals who support them do not adhere to the Bible, which says "Do not judge, lest ye be judged" They are first to get on the bandwagon to judge anyone that does not believe the way they do. This is great news. Now they need to also investigate the supporters at the McCain / Palin rallies who are chanting "kill him" when Obama's name is mentioned.

For all the things I learned from my parents I have to honestly say that thank goodness I did not follow in their republican footsteps. Most comments from McCain / Palin supporters are vile, obnoxious or simply uneducated dribble. They are falling right into republican traps which are baited with fear. Since they have lost so much ground in the election process they have nothing else to offer except for dragging Obama's name through the mud with lies and half-truths. They have no viable solution to the economic crisis and in fact have stated publically that if they continue to talk about the economy they will lose. Here's news for you McCain and Palin… you're going to lose anyways because most people simply don't trust you to turn this country around. Here's hoping that come November Sarah can go back to Alaska and continue to do what she does best hockey and hunting. For McCain he can simply retire and gamble away Cindy's fortune.

Christopher Walter   October 9th, 2008 7:40 pm ET

Well, well, well. Let the truth come out. Sarah Palin likes to throw mud at her opponent- let us hear about her. Message to the GOP and Palin- Can someone please remind them that if they bring up Rev. Wright that they will look stupid. Barack Obama's mother AND grandmother who raised him were WHITE. To suggest that he doesn't like white people (when he is half white) is utterly ridiculous. As for Ayers- he met Ayers when Ayers was a professor (does that mean the faculty, the parents of Ayer's students, his neighbors, etc. are all palling around with a terrorist?). Also, I hear that one of McCain's campaign officials served on a committee that Ayer's served on as well. Does that mean McCain is palling around with people who pal around with terrorist? American's are not stupid. These attacks didn't work before and won't work now. Tell Palin to take care of her corruption charges first before she begins slinging mud!

IT only proves she would be telling another LIE to the hundreds she has told since being hired by McCain. HE didn’t do what Sarah wanted him to DO, period and she ABUSED her power!!!!!!!. That’s why it took them that long to let him OBEY the law, they had to come up with another STORY. Another way for PLAIN to try to FOOL the Alaska Authorities. McCain's Social Security Income: I'm a 53 year old male Independent 'middle of the road' voter. Months ago when John McCain released his tax returns I noted that he is drawing social security along with a military pension. I don't dispute that he is entitled to both, but it really bothers me that a man with 9 houses and 12 cars and all the rest of John's and Cindy's wealth is receiving monthly social security payments. He obviously doesn't need the income and considering the problems with funding the entitlement programs it seems to me to be very unpatriotic and selfish for him to draw SS benefits. I have not seen any comments about this during the election season which I follow closely. Doesn't anyone think this reflects on McCain's character? America First indeed…

John McCain always seems to find his morals when there's nothing on-the-line.

In hindsight, McCain says that the Keating 5 scandal was the worst period of his life. In hindsight, he says that he was a coward in pandering to the Confederate flag crowd. In hindsight, he says he was wrong to oppose efforts to make MLK's birthday a national holiday. It goes on and on and on…

I imagine when this election is long decided and he releases a new memoir. In hindsight, John McCain will be lamenting the despicable, vile, and destructive campaign that he's run against Barack Obama.

Tell me: Why is it that Senator John McCain can only find his morals when looking in the rear view mirror?

1)The Republicans and George Bush and John McCain(who both look like me and has "normal sounding names") screwed this country up without caring what I look like.

2)Since the qualifications for Vice President are the
same as the qualifications for President,
Sara "Harry Potter" Palin is grossly unqualified for

spewing of her campaign garbage not withstanding.

SA in OO   October 9th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

This is the kind of ploy we have been used to seeing from the Republicans. Catch a candidate with some charge that, whether true or not, isn't really important in the larger scheme of things. Do the people putting the challenge together really care whether John did or didn't report $200. The intention is clearly to drive the candidate off message for a few news cycles, or more if the story gains traction with the media. The media after all has shown a fascination with scandal, but not much stomach for digging into the underlying stories of the election and even less with actually covering the substantive issues the country is dealing with.

I'm an Obama supporter, but this is still the kind of irrelevant gotcha politics, that the Republicans have been playing all along. The Republicans are just a whole lot slimier at it.

He did roll a 'snake eyes' with his VP gamble. He also rolled a 'snake eyes' when he "suspended his campaign" and jumped into the bailout hearings. He doesn't seem like the kind of gambler that would have reportable earnings.

Sure Senator McCain can explain what gambling money that is and how much. Where it came from and why he may not of said anything about it. Just as soon as Senator Obama explains where ALL his money came from. How much. Where it came from and why he may not of said anything about it.
After all: FAIR IS FAIR?

This is outstanding. McCain has created an image that needs to be pierced so that the American public can see the true person. They can then decide if they really want him or not; however, their decision should be based on complete information.

Gambling is an addiction. Because of his wife's wealth, McCain has been able to indulge that addiction. It is time to see the extent of his extravagence.

I don't think McCain is the right person for the times that we find ourselves and I really don't care about any gambling problems he might have.

Good, now my question is… when is the media going to report and drill McCain and Palin about her ties to The Alaskan Independence Party? If Obama is "paling around with terrorsit" because he worked on educational charities with Ayers, I guess Sarah is a traitor since she is doing more than just paling around with her husband. Also, McCain's deep and proven ties to Keating makes him an embezzler. It's only fair for us voters to learn about their radical ties, so we can make an informed decision on Nov. 4th. Ain't that right, Pitbull?

j   October 9th, 2008 7:23 pm ET

This doesn't seem very important at this point, other than it going to McCain's character. It is possible that he has a gambling addiction and just keeps losing but because of the addiction, he can't stop gambling.

I am living in Naples Florida, I think Sheriff Scott should be FIRED at the very least. Is there any end to what they will do to win a race.

What ever happened to McNasty going to run a clean race. I watched the debate, HE IS RUDE, he walked around in front of Obama while Obama was speaking, talked very condescending and if I hear him say one more time, I KNOW HOW TO DO IT, SEEMS TO ME HE HAS BEEN IN CONGRESS 26 YEARS, HIS PARTY IN POWER THE LAST EIGHT YEARS. Americans should really be asking the question WHO IS SARA PALIN? Idiotic thinking Americans are completely willing to elect Sara Palin to the possible highest office in the land, to take charge of their lives, knowing absolutely nothing of substance about her. This is how Hitler got into power. At least Senator Obama has been vetted. Believe me, he would not have gotten this far without the feds going over him with a fine tooth comb. You can't say the same about Sara Palin. It will be too late when you can't check certain books out of the library, or your daughter who's pregnant from rape can't have an abortion because fascist Palin won't allow it. Americans should wake up and stop being vunerable and stupid in their responsability to elect a qualified person to office. You see what happened to the country under Bush, and he didn't care what our races were. We All got taken.

Somay lies and distorions and inciting racial violence and hatred..another divider is NOT we need. McCain's disdain for Obama is so evident..we dont need a Senator let alone a President who can't treat people on the other side civilally. I'm for any and all ethic investigations of our politicians but right now the American people are interested in in just how and why fannie mae and freddie mac failed? So let start with some of the Dems who were neck deep in the mess. The American people should find it mighty strange that there's no senate hearings being held demanding heads to roll? So it's obvious that the democratic leadership does not want to hold any hearings at all since it would implicate Chris Dodd, Barney Frank, Chuck Schumer and even Obama.

Sarah So NJ   October 9th, 2008 7:11 pm ET

The six states seem to be in violation of federal law in two ways. Some are removing voters from the rolls within 90 days of a federal election, which is not allowed except when voters die, notify the authorities that they have moved out of state, or have been declared unfit to vote.

Some of the states are improperly using Social Security data to verify registration applications for new voters.

In addition to the six swing states, three more states appear to be violating federal law. Alabama and Georgia seem to be improperly using Social Security information to screen registration applications from new voters. And Louisiana appears to have removed thousands of voters after the federal deadline for taking such action.

Voice of Reason   October 9th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

A very interesting bind that they have put McCain into here:

If he admits that he HAS won more than $200 at a time, then he is branded a tax cheat.

If he denies it, then his cognitive abiliies come into question: (He gambles for decades, and never cleared 200 bucks? If so – when did it occur to him that he should 'change tactics' ? )

Either way, he comes off looking bad.

But his saving grace is that the Obama campaign didnt (officially) fire this one up, so they cant push it publicly without looking like a bunch of heels – and so it'll never get a lot of momentum. McCain would do well to simply ignore it, and have no-name partisians deal with it.

They have totally blinded themselves to the lying, cheating, potty mouth, ect. Him and Palin stand there all holier than thou, talking trash and lying. How Godly is that? Getting people whipped into a frenzy, just like a Klan rally. Calling Obama a terrorist! These people are dangerous and nuts.

We need a real leader, not some hot-head who like to shot craps. He would gamble with our future as well.

OBAMA/BIDEN 08

The Investigation Will Find That Mccain Doesnt Have Any Ethics!

ERP   October 9th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

John McCain has lately shown the unstable, impulsive behavior of a gambler. He may have every right to gamble with his money as an individual but not with the future of America and the free world.

Mr. McCain did not have the necessary qualities needed to become President and world leader when he was a younger man, and he definitely doesn't have them now as a gambling, mean-spirited, cantankerous old man.

Game over, M. Maverick….. by the way, wasn't the real MAVERICK a GAMBLER?

Lisa Vilen   October 9th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

Now another thing! After this election is over, make sure you write your Senator and Congress. Or, better yet, do it now. Tell them that they should ALL be sorry and ashamed for even remotely allowing someone like McCain and Palin on the ticket. These two are sick, period. For someone to even think of using racial angst as their campaign drive, is beyond belief, but for the rest of Washington to sit back and watch while this goes on is even more disgusting. My Republican Congressman just sent me a flyer saying to vote for him. At no point on the brochure did he list he is a Republican. Why? Because even he does not want to be affiliated with McCain Palin!

tgram   October 9th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

Also look into the money used to halt the Palin probe. Who paid for all those lawyers?

The media should descend on Alaska and get some answers about the AKIP and talk to those people who were told to SHUT UP or else.

FL Voter   October 9th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

People wake up. We CANNOT have a liar like this guy running this country! The fact that McCain still has over 40% acceptance really really scares me.

Griff   October 9th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

Either-Sick??? Came out of a late Opperation… Where am I?

Do Tell   October 9th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

It's always easier for McCain to find a plank in Obama's eye when he has a deck in his.

Brian from NYC   October 9th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

Even as a huge Obama supporter, I think this is just stupid. Gambling wins? Come on! I could see if he received a salary from the casinos, but winning some money at blackjack is quite different.

Vince -- California   October 9th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

This is just one of many skeletons in McCain's and Palin's closet. This is sick, sick, sick man who is both mentally and physically unfit for the job of President of the United States, and it is obvious that his running mate is completely out of her league, Palin isn't the Washington Outsider everyone thinks she is, check her background out too !! Husband Todd being a member of group in Alaska who wants and advocate Alaska's secession from the United States, gee if that happens, Sarah can be queen of the next OPEC Member …

ohio   October 9th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

chad in avery ca.   October 9th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

Ethics, the media, and facts….they all oppose McShame and his Moose sphincter.

McCain=Bush   October 9th, 2008 7:03 pm ET

Why don't they also investigate why Mccain and palin's supporters are allowed to yell out "terrorist", and "kill him". That is definetly violating some law.

Cathy   October 9th, 2008 7:03 pm ET

Barbara - 65 yr old white female in NC   October 9th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

Innocent until proven guilty.

But if he's guilty, prosecute to the hilt. Imagine what they would do to us or to Obama.

7 more days and my family votes early (October 16) for "THAT ONE"
