Watchdog group seeks ethics investigation of McCain

An ethics watchdog group has asked the Senate to investigate whether Sen. McCain failed to disclose gambling winnings.
An ethics watchdog group has asked the Senate to investigate whether Sen. McCain failed to disclose gambling winnings.

(CNN) – Ethics watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, commonly referred to as “CREW,” has requested that the Senate Ethics Committee investigate whether Sen. John McCain failed to disclose gambling earnings as required by federal law and the Senate’s own rules.

Click here to read CREW's request

Citing recent press reports, CREW alleges that McCain failed to disclose income earned from gambling on the personal financial disclosure forms he’s required to file as a senator. “Given Sen. McCain’s history of gambling on a regular basis over the years, it is nearly impossible to imagine that he never won over $200, the amount that triggers the reporting requirement,” CREW’s request says.

In the event the Senate Ethics Committee finds that McCain failed to disclose any gambling earnings, the watchdog group asks that the matter be turned over to the Department of Justice for a criminal investigation into whether McCain knowingly and willfully failed to disclose any winnings.

The McCain campaign has not responded yet to CNN’s request for comment about CREW’s request for an investigation.

Could someone also tell me what position Todd Palin held in Government ? What was his official position,as he had enough power to intervene on several important government issues I would like to know what his government job was at the time he was involved in troopergate, that McCain changed to taseragte. He obviously had an official position or it would be highly illegal for him to have anything whatsoever to do with intervening in government business. Please let me know

This is the kind of ploy we have been used to seeing from the Republicans. Catch a candidate with some charge that, whether true or not, isn't really important in the larger scheme of things. Do the people putting the challenge together really care whether John did or didn't report $200. The intention is clearly to drive the candidate off message for a few news cycles, or more if the story gains traction with the media. The media after all has shown a fascination with scandal, but not much stomach for digging into the underlying stories of the election and even less with actually covering the substantive issues the country is dealing with.

I'm an Obama supporter, but this is still the kind of irrelevant gotcha politics, that the Republicans have been playing all along. The Republicans are just a whole lot slimier at it.

It's about time... The McCain/Palin campaign has gotten nasty, rude and down right outrageous with their bogus comments about Barack.. Remember McCain when you are pointing fingers, four more are pointing back at yourself... Now we have Cindy McCain attacking Barack, when the shivers should have ran up her spine, when she was sleeping with a married man. If that did cause Cindy to get the shivers, then nothing well.

  6. He started it!

McCain wanted to get personal, so personal it gets. He wants us to know the "real" Obama so it's time we find out who the "real" McCain is.

Turn about is fair play and just for the record, don't try and pin this on Obama but I'm sure you'll say "he got them in his pocket" that's what you McCain supporters say about everyone who questions McCain actions.

Well, well, well........who isn't telling the whole truth now? I just wonder after reading the request from CREWS how much he has really won and if he has the same problem as Palin.........a problem with disclosure, the same problem he is accusing Barack Obama of. So then the question will be, if he did not then.......HOW WELL DO WE KNOW JOHN MCCAIN?

Look, The only two things that Americans have to remember:

1)The Republicans and George Bush and John McCain(who both look like me and has "normal sounding names") screwed this country up without caring what I look like.

2)Since the qualifications for Vice President are the
same as the qualifications for President,
Sara "Harry Potter" Palin is grossly unqualified for
    either position, bigoted, fascist, anti-semitic
spewing of her campaign garbage not withstanding.

This White Republican guy will be voting for "that one", who's name just happens to be Barack Hussein Obama.

Good, now maybe McCain will get a taste of his own medicine. What else can they investigate? Don't stop at John, put him, Beer Barbie and Fruitcake under the jail and throw away the key. Charge them for impersonating humans.

John McCain always seems to find his morals when there's nothing on-the-line.

In hindsight, McCain says that the Keating 5 scandal was the worst period of his life. In hindsight, he says that he was a coward in pandering to the Confederate flag crowd. In hindsight, he says he was wrong to oppose efforts to make MLK's birthday a national holiday. It goes on and on and on...

I imagine when this election is long decided and he releases a new memoir. In hindsight, John McCain will be lamenting the despicable, vile, and destructive campaign that he's run against Barack Obama.

Tell me: Why is it that Senator John McCain can only find his morals when looking in the rear view mirror?

None should be allowed to get away with "hiding" income. For any person running for public office an investigation indeed needs to be conducted. However, please remember that in the US we are Innocent UNTIL PROVEN guilty.

While I am staunchly in Obama's court in this election, I don't think McCain should be subjected to a witch hunt. It needs to be conducted completely above board with complete transparency.

Nice John. You take care of big business with a 300 billion dollar band aid to pa for their mistakes. And you're a gambler? Now I understand the Maverick title.

    Give me a break!
Maybe CREW should be a little concerned with Obama and Ares, or Obama and Wright, Obama and Acorn, or maybe Obama and Tony Resco?

McCain's Social Security Income: I'm a 53 year old male Independent 'middle of the road' voter. Months ago when John McCain released his tax returns I noted that he is drawing social security along with a military pension. I don't dispute that he is entitled to both, but it really bothers me that a man with 9 houses and 12 cars and all the rest of John's and Cindy's wealth is receiving monthly social security payments. He obviously doesn't need the income and considering the problems with funding the entitlement programs it seems to me to be very unpatriotic and selfish for him to draw SS benefits. I have not seen any comments about this during the election season which I follow closely. Doesn't anyone think this reflects on McCain's character? America First indeed…

  24. Obama yes we can

Can’t WAIT to see HOW much they are PAYING and what they PROMISED Todd to LIE and state his pit bull wife HAD nothing to do with causing this man to LOSE his job. We are suppose to believe that Todd did this himself when he has been stated BY Sarah that SHE fired him for personnel reason…, now we are to think she HAD nothing to do with this man livelihood…….we are NOT that dumb. IT only proves she would be telling another LIE to the hundreds she has told since being hired by McCain. HE didn’t do what Sarah wanted him to DO, period and she ABUSED her power!!!!!!!. That’s why it took them that long to let him OBEY the law, they had to come up with another STORY. Another way for PLAIN to try to FOOL the Alaska Authorities. Let’s be honest, she calls herself a PIT BULL, that mean Todd answers to her……..especially when a spouse has been order to LIE by the elected person leading the abuse.

I don't care whether he earned money from gambling or not, but I really do care that he's been gambling with the country. I don't like that.
