Christopher Buckley, son of William F. Buckley, is backing Obama.

(CNN) - No, hell has not frozen over, but a Buckley is backing a Democrat for president.

Christopher Buckley, the son of the late conservative icon William F. Buckley, said Friday he's decided to back Barack Obama's White House bid, the first time in his life he will vote Democrat.

“It’s a good thing my dear old mum and pup [sic] are no longer alive. They’d cut off my allowance," Buckley, a columnist for the conservative National Review, wrote on the Web site The Daily Beast Friday.

Buckley, who praised McCain in a New York Times Op-Ed earlier this year and defended the Arizona senator's conservative credentials against wary talk-radio hosts, said McCain is no longer the “real” and “unconventional” man he once admired.

"This campaign has changed John McCain," Buckley wrote. "It has made him inauthentic. A once-first class temperament has become irascible and snarly; his positions change, and lack coherence; he makes unrealistic promises, such as balancing the federal budget 'by the end of my first term.' Who, really, believes that?

"Then there was the self-dramatizing and feckless suspension of his campaign over the financial crisis," Buckley added. "His ninth-inning attack ads are mean-spirited and pointless. And finally, not to belabor it, there was the Palin nomination. What on earth can he have been thinking?"

But Buckley made clear he's not just voting against McCain, praising Obama for his "first-class temperament and first-class intellect."

"Obama has in him—I think, despite his sometimes airy-fairy 'We are the people we have been waiting for' silly rhetoric—the potential to be a good, perhaps even great leader. He is, it seems clear enough, what the historical moment seems to be calling for," Buckley wrote.

Come on over buddy. Conservatives, progressives, moderates, everybody is welcome in the Obama camp. We appreciate differing viewpoints as long as you don't shout "traitor" or "terrorists" or "kill him."

The party your dad belonged to Christopher is done. Bush badly damaged it and Mccain/Palin are finishing it off. They need to say hello to the Whig party in the land of oblivion.

Well said.

PhillyFemale   October 10th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Mr. Buckley has my greatest respect for his willingness to keep his mind open – something partisans of both parties have difficulty doing – and having the courage to announce his support for Mr. Obama in such a definitive way. His concern for his country shines through in his statement. He is to be much admired.

Brandon in Indiana   October 10th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

More left wing liberal media favoring Obama....

That's how the usual arguement goes, but I have no idea how the republicans will spin this. Either go the traditional route of traitor or no longer important on the national stage.

But my guess is the third, a pronounced silence that is especially present in these boards where most moderate republicans have left the discussions while only the die-hard enthusiasts are left to try to justify themselves.

Citizen   October 10th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

Christopher Buckley just did what George Will, David Brooks and many other decent Republicans are actually intending to do. Senator McCain and Governor Palin, you all are losing your politcal party or should we be calling these folks "Obama Republicans." Yes, if there were "Reagan Democrats" then we now have "Obama Republicans."

On a side note African Americans used to vote for Republicans, so it now looks like Republicans will return the favor and vote for an African American.

MBC   October 10th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

Mr. Buckley,
Your insight about John McCain and his demise as well as your vision for Obama as the best presidential candidate are heartwarming. Our country is on a path of destruction; however, Obama, Biden, and their other future cabinet members will increase hope and change for the betterment of the USA.
Thank you.

I'm 35 and always thought of myself as a conservative republican. After looking back at the last 8 years and seeing how McSame is running his campaign I'm not interested in another 4 years. Even though there are a couple policies Obama supports that I don't agree with (pro-choice), I feel that his other visions and his leadership capability outweigh any bad qualities.

Tamara   October 10th, 2008 9:50 pm ET

WOW, Now comes all the endorsements. Who is the next one to come out of the campaigns closet. Gee I can not wait.

I am so sick of the election. Enough is Enough. We are going from extreme right to extreme left. We need experience at this time. Where is Hillary.

Paul in Georgia   October 10th, 2008 9:50 pm ET

I liked both Christopher and his Dad long before now. I never cared who either voted for and still don't...As an independent liberal myself, I don't feel a need to demand that people share my views in order for me to like them.

Christopher, you were a great guy before and you are a great guy now. Hands down the best American satirist since Heller.

bob in CA   October 10th, 2008 9:50 pm ET

I agree with him. My group (all conservatives) were for McCain in 2000. Same early this year. But lately, we've all agreed the Man we admired has changed. Palin....then his strange behavior in the financial crisis and after made us realize this guy has changed. He's not the guy we admired in 2000. We are voting for Obama because we feel strongly that he is a leader, and he is sturdy and calm and that's what we need now.

Jay   October 10th, 2008 9:49 pm ET

Finally an honest and decent conservative. If Obama had run a campaign as negative and divisive as McCain or if he had picked a VP as horrible as Palin then I would have jumped ship too. As it stands, Obama is running an intelligent, focused campaign with much less negative attacks – It's exactly what this country needs at this time.

Brenda Shields   October 10th, 2008 9:49 pm ET

I am concerned that I can easily give an individual email comment to McCain but not to Obama. Everytime I click on a website for Obama, it is unreachable for comment by the average person. It looks like a "KIngs: website. I did not like it. I liked McCains much better. It was easier to access to give a comment. I think evey American should have an easy way to give input to this election and to the future president. There are many important issues that are not being discussed due to the big economy "melt down". I hope neither candidate forgets that we have other BIG issues like health care, education, and the enviroment (save the whales and dolphins). I want to know which candidate agrees or disagrees with Bush on allowing the Navy to get away with not complying with our National protection laws just because of "National defense". Can we prove this is necessary for "National defence"? How much will it cost the American tax payer? I, for one, do not want a single penny of my tax dollars used for national defense that uses active sonar in our oceans that will kill whales.

Linda   October 10th, 2008 9:48 pm ET

Great decision! I am 58 years old and normally vote republican; however, I decided to vote for Obama the first time I heard him and researched and witnessed his ability to organize, draw communities together, and bring a new vision for the future to the U.S. He has also demonstrated an incredible ability to organize a financially sound campaign.

You are a stand up guy and is showing the world Americans can unite as one. I only wish my grandparents were still alive to see this day. All their lives they saw racism and look what we have going on... Not a black, not a white running for president but a biracial man, trying to unite the people. My neice is bi-racial and I look at her everyday with love and hope this world will be better for her. Racism is still alive in Ameica but people want it to stop and are actually trying to change... I feel like crying because I never thought in my 45 years that I would see the US make a effort to come together as one.

I find many conservative friends scratching their heads and wondering what has become of the John McCain we once knew.

Good for Mr. Buckley. If one puts all bias and politics aside and exercise reason and intellect, Obama is the only sane and logical conclusion. Sure he may be idealistic and his rhetoric lofty, but that's not at all a bad thing. Anybody who honestly thinks Palin is ready or qualified to be Vice President isn't being honest with themselves, or isn't thinking straight (or at all). McCain lost all respectability and credibility when he picked Palin, and clearly didn't put "Country First." More like "McCountry First".

Amber, VA   October 10th, 2008 9:26 pm ET

Steve, Jacksonville, FL   October 10th, 2008 9:26 pm ET

As a lifelong Liberal, I had respect for the late William F. Buckley even though I strongly disagreed with his Conservative political beliefs. The current Republican party does not even come close to true conservatism. Like the rest of the country, Christopher Buckley recognizes Barack Obama is the best choice to lead our country through the turbulent times ahead. John McCain has been ineffective in getting across any coherent message to the American people about where he stands on the issues facing our country.

Bradley   October 10th, 2008 9:26 pm ET

@Aware,

Want to speak of hypocrites, just take a look at the Republican party. They used to be the party of limited government involvement in both people's economic AND PERSONAL lives. In the 80's and 90's Republicans railed against the concept of being politically correct because it was government intervening in people's lives and minds.

Now, Republicans want to tell people who they can marry, who they can talk to (don't have a Muslim friend or else you are subject to wiretaps), and who you can or can not sleep with or marry.

The Republicans of today are the most hypocritical bunch of politicians in the world. They came to power by fighting political correctness, only to embrace their own brand of it by bedding down with Christian fundamentalists.

I was raised in a Republican household. My father has voted a straight Republican ticket in every election since 1956... at least he has until this year. This year, for the first time ever, he is voting for a Democrat – Barack Obama – because he doesn't feel that the Republican party holds true to conservative ideals anymore. And that is sad when a liberal Senator is a truer conservative than the Republican Presidential candidate.

Michael, Mi   October 10th, 2008 9:26 pm ET

And add to this the news just released that Ms. Palin did indeed abuse her power as governor and is in violation of ethics law in that state......well, the nails just keep getting hammered into McCain's coffin.

McPalin   October 10th, 2008 9:26 pm ET

Ouch!!!!!!! He does have a point, when Bush used the same tactics against McCain during their last primaries, McCain was mad because even if Bush did not approved the attacks he was still benefiting from them. Now as a surprise to many undecided like myself McCain goes and hires the same people that worked for Bush and uses the same type of smear tactics on Obama but now it is all good because he is the one favoring from them. Hypocrite!!!!
By the way, why aren't all the republicans that formed part of the same committies with Obama and Ayers not terrorists? McCain really thinks that we are just plain stupid.

Fern Woo   October 10th, 2008 9:25 pm ET

John McCain's recent irrascible behavior would alarm anyone with common sense and decency. Not surprised that he would be losing more and more moderate notables from his own party even among well known stalwarts like David Brooks and now Christopher Buckley.

I used to think of John McCain as one of my favorate Republicans in Congress. I was going to vote for Obama but felt quite comfortable should McCain become President.....two months ago. Now I am quite fearful of the prospect.

Isn't any wonder that Christopher Buckley is supporting Senator Obama since Senator McCain's campaign stops are turning into Adolf Hitler's beer hall putches. You can almost envision the Nuremberg rallies when you watch McCain and especially Gov. Palin campaigning.

Poor choice!

Obama has done nothing but encourage THE PEOPLE to stand up and take part in the Political process in both the local and national levels. He has encouraged the organization of volunteer groups all over the country to help others become more active in their prospective communities.

His campaign has also reached out to those young, old, rich, poor, white, black, brown and other. I look out at the faces of those who respond to his message and they are more in line with the America I see coming together to re-build this country to its refurbished world image. I am a wealthy independent from a wealthy family and I definitely don't need a hand out. nor do I feel that Obama is trying to force one on me and my family. If you look at his programs you are given options. After all we already have some socialist programs. (ie public schools, library, national and local parks.) These are government run and a right for everyone. Why not health care?

If you look at his (Obama's) character, Buckley is right. He has what it takes. He's smart enough to chose his VP and council wisely; and he knows how to stay above the fray without inciting violence.

Many people vote for their party regardless of what the content is.
I see a lot of htis and cant understand why so many of us have this unrelenting 'loyalty' to our polital parties. I used to vote republican because of that and I regret being a part of what I now find so sad. Obama is the one that opened my eyes and brought me to the other side. I am very proud to support him today. It is very nie to see others that have the courage (and smarts) to recognize a good thing when they see it. I dont ecpect Obama to be able to fix everything single thing because one president can't do it all--but it is very clear to me that we have absolutley no choice but to vote for change and new life in Washington. Obama is our HOPE.

Obama just makes sense for the presidency. He may not be perfect, but he is the better alternative to George W. McCain - they should have picked a more potent adversary to Obama. There also seems to be a racist tone at these Republican rallies that looks very un-American. I'm sure there are many "enlightened" Republican supporters around and until the GOP starts living in the 21st century their brand is going to die. McCain and Palin encourage people to see themselves as victims instead of giving them hope for a better future. McCain and Palin are now inciting rage and hatred amongst fellow Republicans to win the election. What happened to McCain and Palin's conscience, integrity and good Christian moral values!! They just keep making these fanatical attempts to portray Obama as a terrorist and untrustworthy. This has truly gone too far, mob mentality is a very dangerous thing.

Thank you Mr. Buckley for speaking out and telling it like it is.

One thing many are overlooking is that the McCain campaign is actually bringing to life that attitude people had back in the 60's when there were signs posted in public places that read, "For whites only." We have gotten beyond that and people are actually getting along. However, when people begin to make remarks about Obama at McCain/Palin rallies and McCain stand there thinking it's cute, we have a problem brewing. McCain tried to calm that attitude today, but everyone knows that it was not real because if that was his position, he would have stopped it the very first time it was stated.

As an Obama supporter, I can honestly say, Obama makes it clear that certain things do not belong in his campaign.

It's time for all of us to unite to bunker down and save our country. There are a million and one bad things I can say about Obama, but I feel like McCain's on-the-defensive tactics will further polarize us all. Understand, McCain supporters, that this is not about the next four years or even the next decade. This is the all-in, everything on the line, bet of our lives. Obama could blow it, but he's the only one worth taking the risk on in my opinion. We're all neighbors. We're all brothers. We're all sisters. We need to unite like our founding fathers did and work on this problem together. I can only hope...

I AM a TRUE CONSERVATIVE   October 10th, 2008 9:07 pm ET

As a True Conservatve for the past 27 years, I have to say there is NO way you can vote for Barack Obama... NO WAY!!!

But there is no way you can vote for McCain... he showed poor judgement in picking Palin. I tired my best to ignore the couric interview and i blamed it on the gotcha questions. I tried hard, but when my 4 yr old daugther asked me why does she look dumb? i laughed out loud. I mean cmon people,, lets get serious Palin is a horrible pick for VP

She is divisive, racist, power hungry, and most importantly unintelligent...

I don't know if I could vote for a Democrat,, I'm anti Gay, Anti Wealth Distribuition, and Anti Tax on the Rich...

But MCcain has crossed the line in these rallies, especially Palin. My wife was as the Rally in Sarasota and she told me that people were screaming racist chants at black journalists, and she heard 2 different people say, " If Obama wins I'm gonna take him out" I am truly worried for his safety and his wife and kids...

Please Pray for Obama and his family, the anger is UNBELIEVABLE...

Welcome aboard...gotta feeling these endorsements are gonna keep coming. You can't hide from the truth.

The domino effect of economic collapse has begun: The manifestation of the failed economic philosophy of Ronald Regan known as 'Trickle Down or Regonomics' has reared it's ugly head. We the people are but powerless and the high and mighty can no longer take our crumbs to the bank. Game Over. The majority of us haven't money to spend or any more credit to max out. The root of our problem isn't in the loopholes, payoffs, reckless spending etc, those are results. It LIES in the entire logic itself that by somehow giving a rich guy money it somehow benefits you. The American Dream was hung out to dry with credit card close pins.

The money never trickled down! The majority of Americans have none to spend. Most small town 'Main Streets' look more like 'Empty Street' to me. Eat that Rush Limbaugh.

Mr. Buckley you are doing what you feel is in the vest interest of the country. Also, while I think it was a bit late in coming, I must congratulate Senator McCain for his brief display of honor today in his town hall meeting when he defended the fact that Senator Obama is NOT a Muslim but rather he is a decent man but one he has differences with. I wish he had been this way through the entire campaign. It would have caused me to still hold the honor I had for him as an America Hero.

I have long been a Democrat, but John McCain is undoubtedly the last of those who are 100% presidential. There's no doubt he'll be president to all the people, not just his party. Can't tell what his opponent will do - as we've seen so little of him!

Major blow for McCain! I am an independent and my believes are what the GOP represents. However after taking a few steps back and really examinimg the candidates and fact checking their statements Obama has has a better platform. He's not perfect but he ain't aiming for sainthood. McCain has changed so much and is so rabid that he seems like a bull in quicksand, the more he tries the more he sinks.

Dan, TX   October 10th, 2008 8:54 pm ET

Thank you. As a conservative who is enthusiastically supporting Obama myself, it is always good to know that rational thought can prevail over the noise. The next president has a daunting task that will require a 24/7 effort just to keep the boat afloat, let alone sailing smoothly into calm seas. I'm sure Obama will do a better job than McCain. Maybe not enough so that in four years all is well. By then, a rational republican may decide to run for president and kick out the Dems who failed to put us all the way back on course.

NY Democrat   October 10th, 2008 8:54 pm ET

Oh Buckley, guess what happens next? You will be accused as part of the the drive by media, intellectual culture elite and whatever else the right wing radio show media can throw at you. Can you say Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham and the Capital Regions own Paul Vandenburgh, aka, I love drunken former Rep. John Sweeney.

Poor choice!

Obama encourages people to see themselves as victims instead of creative problem solvers!

And, encourages them to put their hand out instead of putting their hand to the task!

His rhetoric of American reputation being based on how "we treat the least of these" is hypocritical!

He voted against legislation that would have protected viable babies born after botched abortions! Certainly these little ones are among "the least of these?"

The obfuscating Obama is not fit to be president of the USA! :(

Chris   October 10th, 2008 8:53 pm ET

Yes, you said it right and thank you Mr. Buckley.

dave M.   October 10th, 2008 8:53 pm ET

I admire this guy – Buckley. It is great to belong to a party and it's idealogy, but it is greatest to be honest and love your country.

As Obama has said time and again, this election is not about Obama or John McCain or Democrats or Republicans. It is about America, our way of life, OUR FUTURE, OUR ECONOMIC SITUATION and our leadership role in the world. If nothing else, I really hope voters will think simply about this and see that only Democrats can turn the economy around anytime it is in a mess caused by a republican. Think of FDR after the great depression, he was a democrat and he turned it around. Bill Clinton after the Regan and Bush I economic mess, Clinton a democrat turn things around. Now after this Bush and such a mess, only a democrat can turn it around, simple. It is all a matter of economic policies. Republicans have the same economic policies, so one R could clean after another R. Fellow Americans, think like Americans and forget this party nonsense because McCain's economic policy is the same like Bush's so we need a different policy to change things for us and make it better. VOTE FOR OBAMA AND HELP SAVE OUR ECONOMY!

Smart move!!!!!!! Obama/Biden – 08 & 2012

insanity   October 10th, 2008 8:52 pm ET

I don't blame him for making this move. McCain has been erratic and impulsive. McCain has proven that he can't think beyond the next news cycle. He's not a long term planner.
Sarah Palin lack the intelligence to be a leader, and McCain picking her proves he did it for the votes and not for the betterment of the country.

As a life-long proud liberal Democrat, I nevertheless admired many things about William Buckley. I always knew what he was saying, why he was saying it and sometimes I caught myself in agreement. I learned some vocabulary, too. I don't think, Christopher, that your dad would cut your allowance for your reasoned piece. Thank you for sharing a very meaningful endorsement and for your eloquence. It does seem clear enough what this moment is calling for and I am very hopeful that Senator Obama will rise (and help the rest of us rise) to the daunting occasion.

I congratulate Mr. Buckley, at last a no racist Republican. As a foreign observer, I hope there are others like Mr. Buckley.
The hate and anger we have seen on McCain/Palin crowds these days aren't because Obama "is a socialist" ( I'm sure he isn't) as they have shouted. It is because he is black. They can't imagine a black man as their president. Unlike people all over the world who are praying for Obama's victory, because they know Obama can save the capitalism – on a GLOBAL ECONOMY we have now and will probably have in the future.
"Terrorist pal"? Give me a break. So, George Clooney, S. Spielberg, Barbra Streisand, Oprah, Leo Di Caprio, Robert de Niro, Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks, David Lynch, Natalie Portman, Matt Damon, Madonna, Woody Allen, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Eddie Vedder, James Taylor, Bob Dylan, Will Smith, Jessica Lange, Kim Basinger, Dustin Hoffman, Morgan Freeman and so on... All of them are Obama's pals. Are them terrorists?

What America needs is for her poeple to vote according to their conscience, and leave aside the party dichotomy that doesn't deal with the present or future challenges the nation is or will be facing. I strongly beleive America has lost her premiership and leadership. The country needs to start afresh in many respects. Buckley, I guess decided to be led by his conscience.....

I think that the Republican ship is sinking for this election. Its clear following this endorsement that perhaps McCain is no longer that defendable to even the people of his party. I don't know of any silver lining that McCain (or the people that are bound to trash Buckley for jumping ship) could take from this except 2012 is only 4 years away.

An intellegent decision by an intellegent Man !!--

Christian S. - Hampton, VA   October 10th, 2008 8:38 pm ET

This may be, out of all the comments I have seen and heard from people of all parties, the most sincere one of all. Buckley's comment really summed up well what Barack Obama's run for the White inevitably should mean for not just all of us as Americans but all of us as citizens of the world. Obama's run is bigger than race, it's bigger than party, it's bigger than gender and yes, bigger than the United States.

Can any of us so readily dismiss the hope that his messages have conveyed around the globe? He has brought credibility back to our nation and we have seen in a global response a planet ready to follow his lead to help make a better vision for the future of us all [and he is not even President yet]. How special must he be to be able to do so much for so many with just his message of HOPE? In him I can see the coming of peace talks that take on a whole new meaning in the middle east and even communist regimes like N. Korea and China might soon begin to see the light. I see nations of the world ready to follow his lead to bring to justice Osama bin Laden, I see in him a United States that is finally ready to follow his lead in truly living up to what the US Constitution outlines, guaranteeing equality and justice for all those who call themselves Americans regardless of any of our outward differences. We can and will be the ultimate example to the world with him as our nations leader.

For those of us who have yet to put aside whatever ill content you harbor towards Sen. Obama, it's time to realize what is truly at stake as Mr. Buckley has done.

I am glad to see that most notable republicans can get past the political bias to look for potential solutions to the problems we face in America, even if its not a member of the republican party representing it.

Bay Buchannon, despite all the evidence in front of her, still presses the position that a candidate that has not proven change from the current status that 80% of Americans feel is wrong, is shameful, and in my opinion really unAmerican, because it puts political bias ahead of the peoples need to be effectively represented.

Because of these kinds of notions, we face the conditions we face today, because of bias, we are in Iraq, because of bias, we are in a economic meltdown, because of bias, the country is divided, because of bias, our support around the world is not what it was, because of bias, the wealth gap is greater then ever before, because of bias, jobs are shipped over seas, because of bias, employers hire illegal employees over Americans, because of bias, cost of medicine is high, because of bias, wages are low, because of bias, we are in this pickle, and when bias is put on a shelf, for real solutions, America will be the beacon it has been since its founding.

The one thing about Bill Buckley, he was never doctrinaire. He was willing to see problems and issues without blinders on. In recent history, the Republicans have talked in code to hide their true agendas. They hide behind doctrine and rhetoric to avoid dealing with the issues that face this country. Buckley never did that. I respected him, though I disagreed with him. It's not surprising that his son sees the the emperor and his heir apparent have no clothes.

Ayanna   October 10th, 2008 8:33 pm ET

Today, at a townhall meeting, McCain was forced to defend Obama from fanatical questioners. McCain said that Obama was a decent family man. I BEG someone to create a TV ad which starts with Palin ominously asking "who is the real Obama" as she did several days ago and them immediately shows McCain explaining that he is a decent family man, and then the narrator says: "Is John McCain's mavericky running mate getting too mavericky even for John McCain?"

Buckley is another Ivory tower intellectual who wants to go to cocktail parties and hob-nob with Obamaphiles. A real conservative cannot possibly want Obama to win as he lies at the left extreme of the democratic party. It 's just so "in" to be for Obama. This election is really about whether you feel that you need government to hold your hand thru life or whether you have the guts and intellect to do it on your own. American's need to stop living above their means, take responsibilty for their finances, their family, and their health and stop looking for the easy life thru government handouts, lottery tickets and lawsuits.

How many more conservatives are going to distance themselves from Mc Cain's frighteningly ugly and divisive campaign? After all of this is over and McCain has lost this election by a landslide, maybe you and other decent minded Republicans can reclaim the GOP.

Focus   October 10th, 2008 8:23 pm ET

If people would focus on the issues this smutt campaigning would not be getting people attention. But this is America and we are a visual society and we are just sheep that will follow the flock over a CLIFF. If you break from the flock must have MAD SHEEP DISEASE!!

Jay   October 10th, 2008 8:23 pm ET

Common sense prevails, thanks for being an honest open minded person, I wish more people in society were like this.

SpookyX   October 10th, 2008 8:23 pm ET

Thank you Mr.Buckley for being so honest . I am a democrat but I always respected McCain. I didn't always agree with him but he stood by his guns. However, these latest character attacks are inciting rage and its dangerous. Combine this kind of behavior with a bad economy can have scary results. I am going to hide in my house come election day (other than to vote).

READY99   October 10th, 2008 8:23 pm ET

WELCOME!!!!! EVEN REPUBLICANS ARE SICK OF McSAME-PALIN.

Larry L.   October 10th, 2008 8:23 pm ET

All I can say is WELCOME. You are a sensible man.

johnrj08   October 10th, 2008 8:22 pm ET

Now, watch the McCain/Palin operatives disown Buckley, just as many have disowned Kathleen Parker. The refuse to learn.

Al   October 10th, 2008 8:22 pm ET

This is a really great gauge of where the election is.

norex - NY   October 10th, 2008 8:22 pm ET

I think this is great, Im glad to see him support Obama... that being said I find America's ignorance incredible and I think It should definitely be addressed. Throughout this election I have witnessed the utter stupidity of the some American people for example people who claim "I don't know about Obama, I just don't have enough information about him so that's why I'm supporting McCain". HOW ABOUT YOU LEARN? IT IS 2008 WE HAVE BOOKS, MAGS, AND SOMETHING CALLED THE INTERNET. But then again most of this comes from the "Heart Land" of which I am not surprised. I find it shocking how some of these people revel in PURE IGNORANCE and then have the nerve to criticize people who are collage educated. Now I have nothing against my educated country brethren but seriously those who are IGNORANT enough to believe Obama is a terrorist or any more "Risky" than McCain deserves any malcontent that comes their directions because of their MISINFORMATION!

Royalty   October 10th, 2008 8:22 pm ET

I applaud the true conservativists in this country who have stood up for the best interests of this country and supported Barack Obama for president. Being an Independent, I may have supported McCain if he had shown some substance and credible solutions, but he has taken a dangerous turn and is not suited in judgment or temperament, to hold the most important office in the world. His selection of Palin sealed his fate.

Art Michaelson   October 10th, 2008 8:22 pm ET

Sarah the baraccuda Palin's speaches are full of CODE words for the ears of hateful bigoted rednecks. Will she still smile and wink and feel so good when one of her crowd takes it upon himself to do OBAMA harm? She is a demagogue in the fashion of Hitler and his fellow JEW haters. Both self professed GOOD CHRISTIANS?

mare   October 10th, 2008 8:22 pm ET

Whee! So glad to hear this. I'm no conservative, but I love C. Buckley's books. Funny guy, and I'm glad he saw the light.

thank you Mr. Buckley. You are a smart man. Unlike the ignorant, racist, uninformed idiots that have been speaking at McCains rallies. Just listen to them!!!!! They know nothing about Obama and call him dangerous, Arab????. Really puts you on the spot doesn't it Mr. Magoo. You got yourself into this spot because the same kind of people are saying this trash that are voting for you. Makes you proud doesn't it??? Obama will be the next president of the United States because smart, informed, non racist people are voting for him.

You are toast.

Ken in NC   October 10th, 2008 8:20 pm ET

I am still an Obama supporter but I still have hopes for the soul of Senator McCain.

Oakland99   October 10th, 2008 8:19 pm ET

God bless this man. And too his father, with whom I often disagreed with but always respected and, most times, listened to.

Joe in MN   October 10th, 2008 8:19 pm ET

Voting for Conservative ideology is not a bad vote...but a vote for McCain is. I feel his sentiment, in that McCain does not represent the light of the Conservative base.

THE 2008 REPTILIAN TICKET IS MCKEATING5 WHO TOOK 112K IN OFFICE AND AN ALASKAN GOV. THAT ABUSES THE POWER OF OFFICE. DOES AMERICA REALLY NEED TWO MORE CROOKED REPTILES IN THE HIGHEST OFFICES IN THE LAND? YOU DECIDE!   October 10th, 2008 8:19 pm ET

I am an Obama supporter, but I do believe in a strong 2 party governing system, it is just too bad it took so long for the adults to stand up to the reptilians in charge of the party. The same can be said for McCrypt, POSSIBLY, when he actually defended Obama at the KKK rally. I will have to see if McCain has actually rediscovered his integrity or was this just another senior moment.

I hope it is not too late.

even tempered   October 10th, 2008 8:19 pm ET

Thank you Mr. Buckley for having the courage to support Senator Obama. It's easy for others to stoop to personal attacks but you have chosen to let reason be your guide. The Democratic Party welcomes all Republicans to give us a try. The last 8 years certainly haven't worked, so come and join us!

vince   October 10th, 2008 8:19 pm ET

Even smart conservatives are switching to Obama.
McCain used to be an honorable man, but I believe the republican strategists have taken over his campaign and pushed it into an extremely negative light.

McCain needs to man up and switch the tone of his campaign. Regardless of who takes the white house, we need to be unified instead of polarized. Obama has done better in this, but even he needs to make sure to run a positive campaign from here on out.

Greg285   October 10th, 2008 8:19 pm ET

Great move Mr. Buckley! It's apparent that you care more about this Great Nation than you do about a Political party. This election is about whom is BEST to lead us out of this economical disaster that we are currently in….

John mKKain and he has no message   October 10th, 2008 8:19 pm ET

if John McCain steps down do to "health reasons" and Palin steps down in light of the trooper gate investigation, i think we would all understand and even respect them both

Allen   October 10th, 2008 8:19 pm ET

Here's hoping that Mr. Buckley is the first of many converts pre-election. Good day all!

Shakeelm   October 10th, 2008 8:18 pm ET

How refreshing. At last a true American, true to his convictions. For once, a true patriot. But, where are the other voices of reason.

Where are the voices of great American such as Mr. Hatch, Ms. Snowe, Ms. Hutchison, Ms. Collins, Mr. Baker, Mr. Romney and others. "Country First" is a Republican slogan that can no longer remain just a slogan, but must be a call to action to these highly respectable Republican leadership.

At a time when America's future depends on our ability to come together as a nation, Ms.Palin's jingoistic stoking of racial intolerance, hate filled divisiveness and showing total disdain for the very value that made us great- that is our tolerance of our diversity can only be viewed just as disgusting as the deafening silence of the Republican leadership.

He is, it seems clear enough, what the historical moment seems to be calling for," Buckley wrote.

No, he is a train wreck in waiting. It is absolutely ridiculous to elect a Government increasing/Tax Raising liberal during an economic slowdown. That will wreck our already damaged economy.

Also, let's have an independent counsel look into the Democrats in Congress who refused to reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Andrew   October 10th, 2008 8:17 pm ET

He is right what happenned to the McCain of 2000
He has become a shadow of himself,
His obvious vile campaign tactics must be playing with his conscience.
'His recent attack of Michelle was just so over the top, and his guilt by 6 degrees of seperation thing and lack of ideas on the economy are really making it very difficult for him.
He should have picked lieberman or pawlenty as his vp,
All rational supporters of Mccain are leaving him

If McCain's first wife couldn't trust him (multiple times), why should the American people trust him? Dishonesty (and infidelity) is a character flaw.

And his campaign bringing up Obama's past drug use as a teen? How about Cindy McCain's theft and drug use as a mother? Or did John's rage drive her to it?

Thank you Mr. Buckley.

California Gold   October 10th, 2008 8:17 pm ET

It takes courage to speak up and thats what makes a MAN.
Call it as you see it. We all love this Country. Senator McCaine Is no longer the person he was. He is now more Erratic and so negative. Simply put out of touch. We thank him for his service to the nation. But that's not a reason to elect him president.

john s arizona for obama - it's possible!   October 10th, 2008 8:15 pm ET

this demonstrates that integrity and intelligence continues in the Buckley line – it seems Gergen, Will and a few others are not willing to lock-step with this growing unamerican hate being seeded by McCain/Palin and other morally disabled republicans.

NOW! if ANYTHING – God forbid – happens to Barack Obama McCain/Palin and their insane campaign will have blood on their hands – i can't go through another american nightmare. jfk, mlk, rfk and almost reagan – and it may be to late – history may read that it was this madness insighted by John McCain that began not only the second u.s. depression But was the trigger for the second Civil War!!!

i'm praying Barack Obama is protected and is our next president and i'm having a hard time finding forgiveness for MCain or Palin – forgiving them would be like forgving the devil! But i don't wish any harm to come to either of them – that's the difference between a democrat and republicans – republicans are hateful!!!

S. Thompson   October 10th, 2008 8:15 pm ET

He brings up a lot of good points re McCain. I do think this campaign has changed him. But in all fairness I can also say the same re Obama. At this point I look at all politicians the same I just hope whoever wins this thing they can honestly aid in FIXING this mess our country is in.

I am a 21 year old who was raised a conservative yet decides to vote for Obama. This article above clearly and realistically portrays the truth of the situation happening in the Presidential race, and I am elated to find that a Republican can see sense in what is going on to make a big change in his past allegiances.

Mr Republican   October 10th, 2008 8:13 pm ET

Buckley should of came out earlier and endorsed Ron Paul. Now he has to choose between 2 liberals and pick the least liberal and erractic.

Charlie in Maine   October 10th, 2008 8:13 pm ET

I used to respect John McCain 100% and disagree with him 70% of the time. I now disagree 90% but worse than that I have 0%respect. Seeing the way he treats the truth, the public and Barack Obama he seems to be trying to outbush W. That is something I did not expect.

Carl Justus   October 10th, 2008 8:12 pm ET

I can hardly believe that a Buckley is going to back Obama. I can understand why, but then I cannot understand why others do not see the very things that Buckley is talking about and especially McCain's campaign officials. They must be on some kind of dope or they have lost their minds and are not giving McCain some solid advice.
I use to vote for the man who I thought would make the best president or whatever he or she was running for, the one who would be more in control of the situation that would come before them. But then we had George W. Bush and after that I would not vote for a republican if he or she was my brother or sister. It seems the party gives them some kind of food or additive that takes away all common sense.

I have not even sent an email to this site before this one so it cannot be a duplicate. It is my own words and original.

John   October 10th, 2008 8:12 pm ET

All I can say is that this country is going to get what it deserves by electing someone like Obama. And it's not even all about who Obama is – its the double-standard in our society that makes me sick. And to see (alleged) conservatives like Buckley support him makes me puke. How can you support support someone whose values (and I'll use that word losely when it comes to Obama) are the antithesis of everything you believe? It means you're an idiot and a hypocrit.

Paul   October 10th, 2008 8:12 pm ET

I don't know if I'm ready for that yet, but I sure can't see voting for McCain any more. Maybe I'll just stay home...

King P   October 10th, 2008 8:11 pm ET

More and more of my fellow Republicans are jumping ship. We are not sell outs, but we are the ones who are putting country first. I still admire John McCain, but not as a presidential candidate. DJ   October 10th, 2008 8:11 pm ET

Who cares about what this guy thinks. Of course, my comment won't get posted because it is pro McCain. You guys have sensored out all of my comments because you only put on all of the pro Obama comments on your site. Everyone I know is pro McCain. We cannot understand why any intelligent person would vote for Obama. My contacts come from all cross sections of the population and I am in a swing state. Obama is unproven, untested and inexperienced. Research him on the internet. Past history of drug use, friends with terrorists against our country and radicals. You wouldn't hire him at your company. His campaign has given $800,000 to Acorn accused of voter fraud which may interfere with our election process. Everyone's vote in important. Use it wisely. Protect our country with the ONLY choice for President- John McCain.

Justin   October 10th, 2008 8:10 pm ET

It's good to see independent thinkers. Vote Obama, vote McCain, as long as you are voting on your own and not being told how to vote, I will respect your choice. That being said, its becoming increasingly difficult to condone McCain's actions. I feel like if I vote for him, I accept his current behavior, which I defiantly do not.

Obviously this man can think for himself and not allow partisan ideology prevent him from being rational. Obama, in my opinion will be a great president...........He is someone Americans can count on to think about all sides of issues before making decisions. We need someone like that in the Whitehouse (a thinker).............Why can't people see him for what he is and not allow McCain to villify his character.

Thank you Mr. Buckley for opening up to America about your heartfelt opinion.

And what's really crazy is that even though so many professional conservatives are calling for an end to McCain's antics, so many of his supporters are franticly asking him to attack even harder. They don't think he's attacking enough. Do they really even know what they're voting for? I don't want to believe race has anything to do with any of this but I've never seen people so plain angry that the candidate they don't support may win. It truly boggles my mind.

Thank you!!! Thank you!!!

You explained best in your endorsement why I am supporting Obama. I am a true fiscal conservative. I do not trust McCain to do ANYTHING right in this country (especially with the insanity he has caused in recent days). I do however trust that Obama will surround himself with smart people and that he will actually listen to what they will say. By the time McCain is done, no one with any sense will want to be a part of his administration. I can't imagine who would want to be in his cabinet.

Welcome, Mr. Buckley. We share a South Carolina heritage, and I am very pleased that you are honest enough to admit you were wrong. I was once an admirer of Sen. McCain myself, and thought he was one Republican I could have voted for. No longer. His honor went out the window quite a while ago.

Obama08   October 10th, 2008 8:07 pm ET

patricia for Obama   October 10th, 2008 8:07 pm ET

How wonderful that Mr. Buckley sees the truth abut Obama.

pa.joe   October 10th, 2008 8:07 pm ET

William F. Buckley would never endorse a ticket that included a intellectual midget like Sarah Palin. Neo-cons like Bush and Palin don't even know or understand the principals espoused by the great conservative scholars of the twentieth century. The McCain campaign would rather whip their supports to a frenzy with hateful lies and fear mongering then offer up thoughtful conservative approaches to the problems we face. I feel sorry for the true conservative, the Republicans have abandoned them.

Finally...   October 10th, 2008 8:06 pm ET

Sound judgment from a staunch conservative...well done!

Amy   October 10th, 2008 8:06 pm ET

Liz from NJ   October 10th, 2008 8:06 pm ET

Though I m an Obama supporter, I always liked and respected McCain. No more. The McCain I respected is pre-Palin/McCain campaign 08. He sold his soul to the devil – made a Fuastian bargain.

I feel sorry for the man. I believe he knows what he is becoming – a caricature of himself, and feels he is no longer in control of his own self image.

It is a Shakespearean tragedy to watch a once honorable man going down the drain and ruining his low legacy due to the company he was forced to keep.

But then again, he had a choice – his ambition got the better of the best part of him, and now he has to deal with not only the election defeat, but the ruined legacy of his life time work. He will now be remembered as an icon who incited the ugliest and basest elements of his party.

L J Kess   October 10th, 2008 8:06 pm ET

Mr. Buckley has apparently taken leave of his senses, if he can look at Osama Obama and see anything but a phony, a hypocrite, a closet socialist and a fake Christian. He should change his name to something more appropriate, e.g., Booker T Lenin.

David, Silver Spring, MD   October 10th, 2008 8:06 pm ET

It just goes to show that the Republican Party, through years of incessant pandering, has finally fractured.

Old fashioned conservatives, like Buckley, would rather accept ideological differences with an intelligent, thoughtful, concerned Democrat than accept a modern-day Know Nothing movement under the Republican banner.

John   October 10th, 2008 8:06 pm ET

Hello President Obama

VA Voter   October 10th, 2008 8:05 pm ET

Let me guess, you "Party-first, Screw Our Country" hacks: Buckley is now a terrorist now too, right?

mrkusn   October 10th, 2008 8:05 pm ET

Buckley is not alone. I am shocked though. I did not see a man of this stature in the conservative bloc endorsing Obama. Obama has been able to reach across the aisle and reach-not just independents like me-but true conservatives.

He will pay for it though.

sandee in Portland   October 10th, 2008 8:05 pm ET

Well, if this doesn't say it all, nothing will. An ultra conservative person who writes for an ultra conservative publication voting for a Democrat. When your own party members don't believe in you except the radicals, you are in deep, deep trouble.

Kim, Dallas, TX   October 10th, 2008 8:05 pm ET

Thank you so much for understanding what our country needs. I too once admired McCain, but see a very different politician in him now. Niether are perfect candidates, but Obama delivers a much clearer, calmer message and is what our country needs at this difficult time in history.

Karen   October 10th, 2008 8:05 pm ET

Now Cindy, you should be a good housewife and start packing your husband's bags for him to retire to the retirement home. It is clear for all to see, whether democrats or republicans that your husband is really "out of this world" and there's no way in hell, that hell will warm over, even for him! But perhaps he could prove all those pundits wrong, when Palin brings her pastor muthee here to perform his magic on all of you.

Good for Buckley! It's great to see that some Conservatives are able to see that Obama is what is best for the USA in this election! I'm even more proud of Buckley considering he previously defended McCain.

C'mon other Conservatives – join the Moderates and Liberals in supporting the Obama/Biden ticket!

reddyice   October 10th, 2008 8:04 pm ET

Obama definitely knows where he wants to take America. He respects the underlying ethos and ideals upon which this country is founded and prospered on. He genuinely thankful for this nation that provided him the opportunity that took him where he is today.

McCain lost his respect the moment he started comparing Obama with Britney and Paris Hilton.

Joe   October 10th, 2008 8:04 pm ET

i totally agree with him. I will be voting democratic for the first time also. McCain and Palin are a disgrace to this country.

mdm   October 10th, 2008 8:04 pm ET

YOU had a responsibility to look beyond the rhetoric floating on the airways before taking such a public position on this important futuristic issue. I'm ashamed of you; and so would your parents be for being so off hand and superficial in your announcement. The conclusion drawn is, we should know better than to expect a 2nd generation public figure to be as wise as his parents.

What IS going on at the Palin/McCain rallies? "Off with his head"??? Shame on any of my fellow citizens who would promote such ignorance and hatred. Go live somewhere else if you don't like it - that's what you've always said to US when you stole elections and ran our country into the ground.

Wow. I'm very surprised. Mr. Buckley's reasons mirror my opinions about Sen. McCain.

This just shows that reason and sensibility exists on both sides regardless of ideology. Barack Obama (not osama) may have the credentials, temperment, and charisma to restore hope back to the american people and the world in a time of striking fear and dismay. He may not be the saviour that some left wing nuts say he is, but maybe that's not what we need. Maybe we just need a steady hand to lead us, with an uplifing message to bring optimism back to the minds and hearts of those who are in despair, losing there pensions, jobs. Maybe he can get those on the market who are scared to invest and lend the confidence to take a risk, and maybe his democratic policies have the juice to infultrate and filter out the corruption and greed that's destroyed the markets through tough regulation and oversite. Maybe a filibuster proof senate and a demoractic controlled house will be able to get things done in an expeditious manner rather than every bill being snuffed out due to partisan politics, and maybe Obama can be the uniter that brings republicans and dems together to tackle the dire issues we face at home and abroad. maybe

MD   October 10th, 2008 8:00 pm ET

Mr. Buckley:

I admire your courage and insight. I too was a life-long Republican until Senator McCain was nominated. I studied McCain's history when he first ran for president in 2000, and was alarmed by reports about his temper. In my humble opinion, that alone, disqualified Senator McCain then, and his race-baiting disqualifies him now.

Further, a man who himself was subjected to Rovian smear campaign, should have never allowed hate-filled comments at his VP's rallies. He should have never engaged in them himself. McCain backtracked today, but that in itself proves that he was wrong.

By allowing Palin to do as she pleases, McCain has practically ceeded power to his running mate. It is clear that he is unable to set the tone for his campaign. How can Americans trust him to set the tone in his administration, should he be elected president?

Matilda   October 10th, 2008 8:00 pm ET

Sad that his parents would have cut off his allowance......hopefully this world sees what he is talkin about.....& the people, older especially, can see that Obama is more than just a black man.....he's a interracial man w/a vision...unlike McCain who is senile

Bravo! I used to define myself as a liberal republican, a fiscal conservative and a social liberal. Unfortunately the last fiscally responsible leadership was the Clinton administration. I guess I'm now a conservative Democrat because I too am voting for Obama. His views on the war in Iraq and the bottom up economic views have earned my respect.
I'd like to get in on the ground floor of history by predicting that Bush's invasion of Iraq will go down in history as the greatest tactical blunder since Gen. Custer at Little Big Horn. We hired a "C" student and we're not even getting "D" work.

Sam O. from Silver Spring   October 10th, 2008 8:00 pm ET

Mr. Buckley will surely be vilified and hated by many on the right for his well reasoned decision to support Obama but all of that will be outweighed greatly by the much good his support offers, particularly at this time of the campaign when the McCain camp has clearly decided victory must be sought and obtained by all means notwithstanding the effect on the individuals involved or the country as a whole.

Davonroe   October 10th, 2008 7:59 pm ET

The McCain/Palin campaign has shown a clear hostility to intellectuals, even conservative intellectuals. That's why Buckley is supporting Barack Obama. The Buckleys were never driven by the rage that has appeared at McCain campaign rallies. That's why they are respected, even by people such as myself, who disagree with them.

As a 64 year old, life long Republican, I cannot agree more. Worse, McCain and Palin are pushing a line of religious and racial hate that has been unseen in modern US politics. He has forgotten that this Country is founded on the ideal that all men are created equal.
McCain is possessed with winning at any cost, but as Ronald Reagan used to say, he shot himself in the foot along the way by selecting an inept running mate with a base personality and the sophistication of a snail. This bad judgment, along with his half truths, and out right lies has convinced me that I cannot vote for him.

Wow!!! This is great for Obama. I also read the following on Yahoo. This sounds like the McCain I remember. I'm still voting for Obama at this point....but it's nice to hear McCain shooting this stuff down now and taking boo's for it as well. After watching their gatherings it was starting to look like a Klan meeting!

"If you want a fight, we will fight," McCain said. "But we will be respectful. I admire Sen. Obama and his accomplishments." When people booed, he cut them off.

"I don't mean that has to reduce your ferocity," he said. "I just mean to say you have to be respectful."

When a visibly angry McCain supporter in Waukesha, Wis., on Thursday told the candidate "I'm really mad" because of "socialists taking over the country," McCain stoked the sentiment. "I think I got the message," he said. "The gentleman is right." He went on to talk about Democrats in control of Congress.

On Friday, McCain rejected the bait.

"I don't trust Obama," a woman said. "I have read about him. He's an Arab."

McCain shook his head in disagreement, and said:

"No, ma'am. He's a decent, family man, a citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with (him) on fundamental issues and that's what this campaign is all about."

He had drawn boos with his comment: "I have to tell you, he is a decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States."

A statement from a true and worthy conservative. McCain is not a conservative; nor is he a maverick. He is merely everything Palin accuses Obama of. True conservatives will recognize that their best interests will be served in a McCain/Palin trouncing at the polls, and a period of time to rebuild with fresh ideas. I look forward to see what a fresh and humbled Republican party might look like (hope that it will be free of those wishing to mix church and state) ~ Committed Christian.

I agree with Mr. Buckley about Sen. McCain's nasty, angry and smear
tactics the Sen has been using against Obama at his racist ralleys this week. As time goes by during this election time his silly rants and ravings are not what the american people want to hear. In fact it's a turn-off to most people. I believe the American people want to hear
his plan about what he's going to do about the average Americans who are suffering during this horrible time in our in our economy.
He shows poor judgement skills about issues and people are tired of his suggestions to solve problems that don't make sense. He finds it hard to keep on course while speaking and he flip-flops alot.

As a Democrat, I appreciate Republicans like Buckley. We are in this situation together. It's about time that we show unity among each other to bring about changes that are needed. As I've said all along, this election isn't about McCain nor Obama. It's about who can bring about the fundamental changes that this country desperately needs. Government need to establish a relationship with the American people and international community, which has been missing for the past eight years.

I commend Mr. Buckley for his decision and agree with him when it comes to who McCain has become. I once admired McCain for standing up to his party, but this election has swayed him to compromise himself on several occasions which have turned him into someone not so appealing.
I was originally a HIllary Supporter, leaning towards McCain until Palin became the puppet and now, I too am an Obama/Biden supporter.

Mike from CA   October 10th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

It's a breath of fresh air to know we still have conservatives out there who understand why temperament, intelligence, inspiration and steady leadership is important – I admire John McCain, and I have voted the Republican ticket the last two general elections. However, the tactics McCain is allowing to happen under his leadership are un becoming on a future leader of free world. John and Sarah will be remembered as the two who brought down the Republican party.
My advise to John McCain – think about the damage you are doing to the party...there are som great Republican congressmen / women; Senators and State leaders who you will take down with you using the tactics you are applying.
I will vote for the Obama/Biden ticket and support the local Rep tickets.

dylan   October 10th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

Obamaican   October 10th, 2008 7:52 pm ET

See, this is exactly why I am voting for Obama this year.

I may be a Republican, but I have no trust in my parties nominee. Ever since he chose Sarah Palin, it's clear he'd prefer to pander to the crazy Religious Right who wants to steal my party, rather than stick to his convictions.

Maybe my Party will show me a good candidate someday, but right now Obama is the man I trust with the country. We don't see eye to eye – but I trust him to want whats best.

I look forward to a genuine, moral and conservative GOP in 2012.

In the meantime, if you really disagree with Obama's political views but disdain this awful behaviour of McCain/Palin et al, consider casting your vote for a conservative (Barr/Root or Baldwin/Castle) this time. It says no thanks to the corporate-socialist and neo-fascist wings of the party (Bush/Cheney and now apparently McCain) but lets them know you will be waiting for them next time if they choose a positive candidate who wants to unite America.

Mark in Omaha   October 10th, 2008 7:52 pm ET

I think he summarized it nicely. I too was a life long Republican, but 8 years of divisive politics, fear mongering and fanning the flames of intolerance has run this Country into a shambles. Whereas I don't completely agree with Barack Obama's political views, he certainly seems like a better leader, and a man that can start the healing process, not only at home, but with our reputation that has been damaged worldwide. Compare the two objectively...who is more Presidential? OBAMA

Brandon (Wilmington, NC)   October 10th, 2008 7:52 pm ET

Way to see the light! I've crossed the line as well and will be voting Obama/Biden this year, he making me proud to be an American again!

exrev   October 10th, 2008 7:52 pm ET

Finally someone on the other side has seen the light. The media is talking about the "Daly" effect when it comes to people entering the polling booth. Makes me wonder if there are going to be many proud republicans who will profess to backing McCain, but behind the closed curtain will be voting for Obama, and then walk out and proudly tell their republican friends they voted for the "Maverick." Then in future elections we can talk about the "McCain" effect.

wrongwinger   October 10th, 2008 7:52 pm ET

oooh man. you better watch it or mccains supporters will be calling for your head too. i can't believe the people showing up for his campaign yelling kill him, and traitor, treason., arab. what the heck has the republican party turned into. a bunch of backwoods rednecks. and the fact that jon mcbush didn't immediatley point out the wronglyness of that only goes to show what a true unamerican he truely is.

Mack   October 10th, 2008 7:52 pm ET

Well maybe Buckley will get Obama to also be honest about his past connections. Contrary to what the MSM says, this is a VALID question. If you connect all the dots it paints a sketchy picture and Mr.Obama has mislead us by not be 100% truthful. His connection to Ayers is important and I am tired of my fellow democrats putting this American Terrorist on a pedistal just to protect Obama. He is not a good man, he has never apologized to his victims and wished that he had done more. There is also deeper connections to Rezko and Wright. While we want to look the other way, we must question why the Obama campaign gave a 800,000 donation to Acorn through another organization and now we have proof of thousands of fraudulent voter registrations. Obama needs to answer and if he does not this will always hang over his presidency. The american people are not racist, we just want Obama to finally answer a question honestly.

Randy   October 10th, 2008 7:51 pm ET

So, Buckley goes from staunch conservative, to far left liberal , and bases his reasoning on those explanations? It's too bad ...it seems like too many Americans have had some mysterious veil pulled over their eyes, preventing them from seeing reality. Yes, he's smooth, "he looks presidential", but his roots and background, beginning at Columbia, and carrying over to men like Ayers to Wright to Mayor Daley..are far, far left of what America needs. Why can't anybody see this guy really for what , and who, he really is? In his heart he really doesn't like America very much, and his friends hate capitalism. I fear Americans will be sorry, but it will be too late by then.

OBAMA (2008 -16)

Confused_voter   October 10th, 2008 7:50 pm ET

Who is taking him seriously? And who is confused by Obama's rhetoric and empty promises, all talks without practical experiences and life-time achievements, or even substance and character?? He is only good in hiding behind Joe Biden. It proves a confusing time, with compromising messages, while Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton would know better when they said Barack Obama was not qualified or prepared to be commander-in-chief an a dangerous world. We need someone who can answer the phone, on his own, at 3 A.M. in the White House. And John McCain is ready to answer any leaders such as Vladimir Putin of Russia. Who is Obama, really? Should it be Biden/Obama, or Clinton/Obama, instead of Obama/Biden?? Mr. Barack Obama reminds me of Jimmy Carter, and he is bringing our nation into deeper recession, or even another Great Depression, with big spending, higher taxes to pay for his spending, and more and more government-control. No more freedom, folks, sorry!

Buckley, you are a courageous man with a keen sense of judgement. What you have is what is lacking in a large proportion of our populace – an ability to think with your head and not the nether part of the lower intestine. America is perilously close to interparty/political violence that has until now only been seen in places like Africa – thanks to the unfortunate and despicable volatile incitement to anger by McCain and his retarded protege Palin. BELIEVE ME AMERICA, YOU DO NOT WANT McCAIN AND PALIN IN POWER.

Obama/Biden

Wow! Refreshing...It is nice to see there are reasonable, not firey angry, Republicans out there. I am not just happy that Mr. Buckley is voting for Mr. Obama, it is because he is thoughtfully looking at his choices. That is how America is supposed to be. It is one thing to be enthusiastic about his/her candidate. It is non-productive for all the "hateful" negativity that so many of his party have put forth recently. What used to be secretly kept, so many Republicans are openly demonstrating with this demonic behavior. Maybe they never lost an election before. Whatever the outcome, it would be wonderful to see these people act like adults and take the outcome gracefully. It will only help all Americans if that would become the case. I guess I'm dreaming.

I believe very responsible Republican voters see what the reality is and how it's affecting what's going on at this time, and McCain, I'm afraid ,is about 8-10 years too late. McCain has no plan to help this nation and will do anything to be President. It's too freightening to think that if he died while in office, the Palin pick would be an abomindation to what decent legislators Republican or Democrat have worked very hard for.

Very commendable, Mr. Buckley, and I salute your honesty and courage in this endorsement. With McCain taking the lowest road to the highest office in the land, he has compromised his character, his judgment, his decency, and integrity. It is heartwarming to see respectable, discerning Republicans (and I've read of and seen on television so many prominent ones like you) beginning to acknowledge that McCain's ambitions have eroded all that he was and used to stand for. He has run the sleaziest campaign in presidential history, and it is sad that this will most likely be how history will remember him. He no longer deserves to be president because throughout his campaign he has hardly proven himself presidential in every sense of the word!!!

Yet another voice of reason in what is rapidly degenerating in to a frenzied mob mentality. I was just wondering earlier this week what William F. would have to say about these current events.
With so much at stake how is it possible there is so little genuine discussion of the issues? The rhetoric is unbelievably vicious – the personal attacks are outrageous. Honor. Dignity. Vision. Strength.
Courage. The qualities we need in a President. The qualities Barack Obama has consistently demonstrated. Shame on John McCain. He is not the man he once was and he has tarnished his reputation beyond repair.

When this election is over some people are going to have to take a good long look at themselves in the mirror. Let's just all prayer that goodness will prevail...and the good guys will win.

Go! Buckley! You've called it like you see it and many of my republican friends are saying the exact same thing! Obama for President!

Mccain/Palin's rallies are downright scary   October 10th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

He hit the nail right on the head! Point perfect, krystal perfect, couldn't have said it better!

Jimmy   October 10th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

Wow, some one can see the light... I used to like McCain, but he now scares me, the day he chose Palin is the day I choose Obama.

Is she for real? I have never been so scared to have a soccer or hockey mom in the white house......
I honestly think I would move, if god forbid, she became the leader of the most powerful country in the world and I voted for Bush the first time around....

Janet   October 10th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

If the voters would look at this election without malice in their hearts, a lot of other Conservatives, Independents, Republicans would be voting for Obama also.

Obama in the white house   October 10th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

I am sure more people will come out openly supporting Obama, who has shown us that he has it in to be the next president........I think its high time that people come out openly and admit that he is the best in the race and you cannot ignore it...........i am eager to see who else is in the list of conservative people in support for obama............

Go Obama/biden 08/12

Philip Wander   October 10th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

Not all conservatives, indeed not many at all, were or are neo-conservatives. Not all Republicans were proud of the way Karl Rove ran elections, driving wedges between various groups and wooden stakes into the hearts of rival candidates. When one is committed to preserving what has been and still is truly important, as with the rule of law for example, then many of us–left, right, and center– are conservationists.

Change is inevitable. We are capable of making some changes ourselves. But some change is good, and some change is not so good, even bad. We can as individuals and, recalling our founding documents, as a people debate the merits of changing and not changing our ways of thinking, talking, and doing business. Though I stand far to the left of Mr. Buckley and the National Review, it seems to me that he has done us all a service. He reminds us that personal integrity is not a talking point. It is the basis on which one evaluates ideas, critiques ideologies, and questions courses of action.
And, when the times and one's values call for it, change one's views, even during the course of a fierce political campaign.

VOTE CHANGE.. GO OBAMA 08   October 10th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

These last minute scare tactics by the McCain/Palin ticket has so saddened me, it is difficult to realize they would play to such hatred and strife in this country. I couldn't have said it better myself.

I think McCain represents the past, Obama represents the future. The future can be unknown and at times scary. The best thing to do is embrace the change and go with it.

Wow!!! How times have changed. I never, in my lifetime, thought I hear of a Buckley voting democratic. I must however, admit Mr. Buckley clearly and concisley lays out his argument on behalf of Mr. Obama. Sen. McCain has changed-and not for the better. He has become petty, duplicitous and above all willing to win at all costs, forgetting that should he win, he will then have to govern a people who think him inadequate at best and monster at worst. Lest he forget the election of 2000, Mr. McCain should attempt to remain honorable in his dealings. Mr. Obama is his adversary, not his enemy!!

thank you!   October 10th, 2008 7:36 pm ET

This is a great day. I know that many people see that Obama is a great leader. I have complete confidence that this will be a landslide election. We are waiting to celebrate the victory!!!

Daniel   October 10th, 2008 7:36 pm ET

Airy-Fairy?

Doesn't

"He is, it seems clear enough, what the historical moment seems to be calling for"

Sound alot like,

"We are the people we have been waiting for"

Either way, welcome to the winning party Sir. We look forward to pulling up our sleaves with you and working towards restoring the American promise back to our people.

Rodger   October 10th, 2008 7:36 pm ET

Many of the smartest and brightest Conservatives have been in print about the outrageous conduct of this Republican candidate. His judgement about Sarah Palin was first thought to be wise, but when the facts came out about her and she began to be interviewed. He has tried to take both sides of every position....making a fool out of himself. Now is is down to lies and smears, something he pledged not to do after his 2000 campaign. I miss the old mavrerick MCCain.
Today we are left with a bitter Rove type campaign. With the economic issues of today, the American people want and are due more!!!

chris   October 10th, 2008 7:36 pm ET

Wow, the beginning of the end for the McCain ticket. Nice to see someone speak real about this race and the issues confronting ALL Americans. Once of the reasons this country is so great and has a long and bright future ahead of it.

Republican For Obama   October 10th, 2008 7:35 pm ET

Mr. Buckley has peaked beyond the partisan curtain and seen exactly what Obama supporters see–a gifted and brilliant man on a path that feels almost written in the stars.

I presume many other conservatives will now gravitate away from McCain and to Obama–if for no other reason than to just save face for supporting the McCain/Palin comedy show.

no obama no mcain and im against all incumbants hooraa for the other guys

We need more fiscal conservatives that are realistic. McCain is a good man ,he just went with the wrong campaign advisors.

We need to work together more then ever.

This is a big endorsement and I for one and very glad. I hope the negativity of McCain/Pailin will subside before we have unneccessary riots.

Boye   October 10th, 2008 7:33 pm ET

Just remembered something important (read it on this blog), Republicans thought John McCain was least qualified to be president that Bush and Bush turned out to be an unqualified president.

In math, if A=>B, B=>C then A=>C. That is, if A implies B and B implies C, then A implies C. So do the math.

Jokes apart (as I don't think the math can be applied in this situation), I just found it kind of interesting how people justify their selection.

...and the beat goes on! It's refreshing to see someone see through the McCain rhetoric and see what millions of us have seen for some time. Barack Obama is the real deal and we Americans have the opportunity to be a part of a great historic moment in time by having the leader we need to get us through these most difficult times.

Now I have to say the same about Christopher Buckley.

Seems SHALLOW PALIN is too much for even conservatives. Good. So when is John McCain going to endorse Obama? May be during the next debate??

Oblio   October 10th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

God bless you, Christopher Buckley. Your wonderful father raised an intelligent man, and may he rest in peace.

TheTruthHurts   October 10th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

What else is their to say? I finally have faith again that some Republicans are TOTALLY BLIND. Sure, McCain 2000 had lots to like, but this guy is a joke. Even if you are a staunch Republican, like Buckley, you have to be honest about what is right in front of your face.

He is clearly not a member of the liberal media.

I believe conservatives everywhere will rise to throw John under the bus because they want to live to fight another day.

Let God Bless America and the spirit which drive America genuity goes forever, and ever.

Well said, and more powerful from someone who has reasoned it out.

Imastun   October 10th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Christopher, I am quite sure, that your father not only wouldn't have cut your allowance, but would have himself supported Obama. He was the epitome of intelectual conservatism. Even though it is hard for me to concur with his positions, listening him defend his ideas was a feast for ears and intellect. I strongly believe his sincere and strongly held beliefs would have stirred in his soul an immense reprehension from the KKK leaning atmosphere of McCain/Palin rallies of late.

Janine   October 10th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Good for you. Remember "Country first". I think McCain forgot. Instead of inspiring people to think of their country, he's inspiring the mob mentality to heat and tear this country down.

Right on bro...I think this man sees the light at the end of the tunnel!!!! Exactly what I've been sailing all along...Now only if more Repubs would see this...how could 40+% still be voting for McCain??? Can someone enlighten me on this?

bill pike   October 10th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

i was raised in the same environment, my dad was county chairman for the republican party, friends with goldwater, etc. The last 8 years has shown us there has to be a new ab lincoln in washington and obama is that man. he has to be close to lincoln in intelligence, but i also see in him character that as a republican i saw in kennedy–the love of our country, to be able to talk to world leaders instead of dictate to them as bush and mccain do.

signed: ex republican, vet, small town, businessman, christian, pentecostal, loves the lord with all his heart.

sc   October 10th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

i can only hope more folks start realising that Mccain is looking more and more crazier everyday. the only reason many folks cannot see through this is because of their ego or i suspect race has something to do with it.
i think he would have been a good candidate in 2000, but alas, history sided on the side of the dummy.

GM (General Motors)- once the Omnipoint symbol of American Industrial might is trading in stock market lowest level since 1950. In Clinton era stock value was as high as $90, now merely $5.00.

The entire GM market capitalization value is now $2.6 billion, less than it was 1929 beginning of great depression....

Thank god 4 conservative with common sense. I am disgusted by the show McCain and Palin are putting at their rallies. It explains why these country is falling apart right under our nose. I am really worried that one of these fools at the rally would feel it is patriotic to take matters in their own hand. I never expected this from McCain.

Teddy California   October 10th, 2008 7:29 pm ET

I think whichever party takes over the white house will eventually be the loser in the long term. The next few years will be the adjustable times for Americans. American living standard has to be lowered in the next few years. The party in power will be blamed for the decline. If Americans listened to Carter's words and went to Carter's direction, Americans would not have the current energy crisis and the financial crisis, and such a huge debt. Sure, living standard would not be as good as under Reagan's economics. But there would not be such a huge debt.

Scott - Republican   October 10th, 2008 7:29 pm ET

that is a clear-headed and well spoken argument to vote for obama. i hope that resonates throughout the rest of the party and we can settle down on the real issues that are facing our nation. leadership that is reckless and woeful in it's intent to stoke factionalism and anger is not what this country needs.

Way to go Christopher!!

His comments about McCain are all too true – very sad fate for a genuine hero. But, it is all McCain's own doing and he could stop any time and stick to issues if he choise.

Much as I admire McCain's courage facing the Viet Cong, Obama's courage in facing the rage of American rednecks (rage being deliberately stoked by McCain and Palin) is even more awe-inspiring.

Obama 08 & 12.

Come on over...this is indeed good news

Boye   October 10th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

I wouldn't be surprised if John McCain himself ends up voting for Obama. Honestly, this is part of why people can't run solely on experience. The more experience McCain, somehow chooses to apply the negative things he learned (aka extremely negative character attacks that he once deplored, or did he?). See I don't have any problem with McCain bring up Obama's past (especially if he think it is relevant for the American people to know about it), but if it were that important, why not at the beginning of the general election? Well, that's probably because he didn't think it was so important that it had to be discussed but important enough to be exploited.

Walter, FL   October 10th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

OMG – Thank you so much! Maybe this helps a few more of them to wake up and see what kind of hate and extremism is going on right now.
I KNOW not all Republicans are idiotic fear-mongers, but I am afraid the extremists have taken over the party: I hope more sane Republicans will come out, demanding back the good ole GOP after the election!!

blue coastr   October 10th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

Good. This shows at least some in the GOP have the ability to vote for temperament and intellect over hot air and failed policies.

This is what I have been looking for. It is time for americans to stand for what is right and just in our own country.

Thanks for speaking the truth Mr. Buckley. This time America is united.. Republicans, Democrats and Independents... all for Obama!

United under One Nation under One Flag for One Bright Leader.

Obama/Biden 2008!

Buckley sees the writing on the wall. The good people of Virginia and North Carolina see the writing on the wall. The only people who don't see it are John, Sarah and Cindy. It says "Obama/Biden, you betcha."

Kevin   October 10th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

GREAT JOB.... SO AM I. As a conservative republican I couldn't have been more disappointed in his Palin choice, and over the past few weeks McCain has turned into a squirrel running out of acorns as winter approaches. HE IS NOT THE JOHN MCCAIN I KNEW AND SUPPORTED A MONTH AGO. Obama has impressed me with his response to this crisis. Although I don't think he is any where near qualified to be president. I believe that he will take advice from everyone to make the best decisions that are good for our country, his plans are realistic and concise. I have had it with McCain. Fed Up! Mad!

donald, atlanta   October 10th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

Sarah Palin is Obama's best friend.   October 10th, 2008 7:25 pm ET

Of course the GOPs with living brain cells know McCain needed someone who has credibility to help him win. He could choosen someone that will make his age and disease less of an issue rather he once again chose "self " rather than country. People are not fools they get it!!!! That's why he's going to loose. Palin is good for the base but she's chased off the independents!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dear i say it again Palin's is Obama's best friend!!

Buckley says what many of us have been saying all along. McCain has sold his soul for a desire to be president. The one time maverick has become something hard to understand, incohereht, and foolish. And then there is his small-minded and mean-spirited attacks on his rival. Obama has shown poise, intelligence, and real leadership qualities as we continue to witness an American – even global financial meltdown. We need Obama in the White House and a real strategy to run this big business we call America.

Bob Barr 2008   October 10th, 2008 7:25 pm ET

Fiscal Conservatives–Tired of the socialism proposed not only by Obama, but McCain too? If you can't imagine voting Obama, but can't bring yourself to vote McCain, check out Bob Barr's website. Even though he is running as a Libertarian, he is the one TRUE Republican in this race. Thank you for your attention.

Gene   October 10th, 2008 7:25 pm ET

Good for you Buckley...

About time more people are realizing what the effects are when you have a president who's a reactionist and not a strategist.

Obama is not only cool, calm, rational... but he's also highly intelligent. I don't want another sub-par student heading our country. I don't want a "joe six pack" backing him up. I want my leaders to be scholars, people who value the benefits of education.

This is the one thing that solidified my position against McCain.. When he voted against the new GI bill because "he didn't want to encourage people to leave the military and go to college"... sorry McCain. That's why we're falling behind in the world. That's why countries like Japan and India are running circles around us as far as technological and exporting growth.. because they realize that a highly educated work force is the #1 method to improving your economy.

Ronald   October 10th, 2008 7:25 pm ET

McBush cries about the activities of acorn but nothing about the many instances of African Americans being removed off the Voter rolls because their homes are in foreclosure. These voters are not being notified so when they show up to vote they wil be turned away. This is shamefull purposeful Disenfranchisement by the ReThuglicans on a frightening scale. Is this still America? Or has Bush stolen it from us?

This is amazing – and very welcome! I have long believed that Barack Obama is not only a thoughtful, intelligent person, but someone with the ability to rally people across the political spectrum to the cause of serving our country in its, and its people's, best interest.

I hope this endorsement by Christopher Buckley will bring other Conservatives to the table and help people see that Obama is not only the pragmatic choice, the responsible choice, but also the inspiring choice for President in November.

We will bring this country back around – with the help of Senator Obama, Senator Biden and the many, many committed people from all walks of life.

After all, that spirit, drive and commitment to public service is what founded our country and has enabled us to face, take on and overcome our challenges throughout our nation’s history.

OK, so I have listened to all his speeches and debates and I am now officially a flip-flopper (thank God), and I can't wait for this smart, intelligent, cool, calm, and collected man to be President. Democrat 4 life   October 10th, 2008 7:23 pm ET

Welcome aboard. Although i do fear for Obama's life. The Republicans are a disgrace. I'm a Christian and Christians do not behave as such. Doesn't the Bible say "For God so loves the world". Maybe It says "For God so loves White people only". The rethugs are acting like this country is only theirs and they are entitled to the presidency. Remember God says one thing He hates is a prideful heart. "God resists the proud, but favor the humble". If Obama doesn't win, with the economy in such a bad shape, Sarah Palin being one 72-year-old heartbeat away from the presidency, people losing their houses, pensions and so on... I will never vote again in my life. This is my first time and may just be my last.

David   October 10th, 2008 7:23 pm ET

Very well said without being mean-spirited or nasty in his analysis and reasons for supporting Barack Obama. I am glad that Mr. Buckley is showing courage and good judgment in throwing his support behind Barack Obama.

McCain is eroding his own support through his actions and in-actions on the campaign trail. By not being critical of his crowds and instead feeding on the crowds rage he is showing poor judgment and character. He said that his experience in Vietnam changed him and made him put "country first" but his behavior over the past two weeks show otherwise.

In addition, people should really open their eyes and ears when they listen to either Sarah or John speak. Even their supporters should see the garbage that is coming out their mouths and if you support them you are doing it blindly and without thought.

Mr. Buckley congratulations on your decision and courage to openly support Barack Obama, the only clear choice for America and the world today.

While I am thrilled that Mr. Buckley has endorsed Sen. Obama (WTG!) I would like to point out one thing. The "We are the ones..." is not an Obama quote of rhetoric, he was using the Hopi Elder speech, since he is an advocate of Native Americans, and quoting it. This is the complete work:

We Are the OnesWe've Been Waiting For

You have been telling the people that this is the Eleventh Hour.
Now you must go back and tell the people that this is The Hour.
And there are things to be considered:
Where are you living?
What are you doing?
What are your relationships?
Are you in right relation?
Where is your water?
Know your garden.
It is time to speak your Truth.
Create your community.
Be good to each other.
And do not look outside yourself for the leader.
This could be a good time!
There is a river flowing now very fast.
It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid.
They will try to hold on to the shore.
They will feel they are being torn apart, and they will suffer greatly.
Know the river has its destination.
The elders say we must let go of the shore, push off into the middle of the river, keep our eyes open, and our heads above the water.
See who is in there with you and celebrate.
At this time in history, we are to take nothing personally.
Least of all, ourselves.
For the moment that we do, our spiritual growth and journey comes to a halt.
The time of the lone wolf is over.
Gather yourselves!
Banish the word struggle from your attitude and your vocabulary.
All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration.
We are the ones we've been waiting for.

—The Elders, OraibiArizona Hopi Nation

Buckley's son endorses a ticket that would cause his conservative father, who arguably is the patriarch of modern conservatism, to turn over in his grave. His rationale for choosing to switch should cause shiver to run down the right wing's spine.

Even intelligent conservatives are switching sides. What does that say about those who are still clinging to McDufus and Knucklehead? Pitiful flat earth people!

Cynthia - Arkansas   October 10th, 2008 7:21 pm ET

I am proud of the Republicans that have the courage to step up and say "enough is enough". I think there will be a lot more who will vote for Obama that may not admit it. McCain has shown that he has no character. Anyone who lets his rallies turn into meetings of the Klu Klux Klan and Nazis has no place anywhere near the White House. We have seen Obama for 20 months, non-stop. We know him and his beautiful family as well as we know anyone. Desperation is ugly, but I never dreamed I would see the kind of rallies the Republicans are holding in my lifetime in the United States of America. If you care about the future of this great country, there is only one choice. A true leader, and that is Obama. Who, for the record, is not a terrorist. How riduculous!

As an independent voter Buckley has (suprisingly) summed up my feelings about John MCCain, a man I once respected. I couldn't imagine the damage McCain would do as President. His lust for power has made him virtually unrecognizable. A McCain presidency promises nothing but partisianship, divisivness, and hatred. This election has taken an ugly turn for the worse and I think McCain and his advisors have badly mis-judged the electorate.

Jake747   October 10th, 2008 7:20 pm ET

Funny how so many freaked out conservatives are trying to convince everyone that Obama will be a socialist takeover, yet Buckley along with other powerful wealthy figures are backing Obama. On the October 2 edition of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes, co-host Sean Hannity repeatedly praised Gov. Sarah Palin for citing during the vice-presidential debate Sen. Barack Obama's August 13, 2007, remark that "[w]e've got to get the job done there [in Afghanistan] and that requires us to have enough troops so that we're not just air-raiding villages and killing civilians, which is causing enormous pressure over there." However, Hannity - who has repeatedly criticized Obama's remark, including during an October 1 interview with Palin - did not note that Defense Secretary Robert Gates recently apologized for deaths resulting from coalition airstrikes, saying in a September 17 statement: "I offer all Afghans my sincere condolences and personal regrets for the recent loss of innocent life as a result of coalition airstrikes.

AP (ATL)   October 10th, 2008 7:16 pm ET

Welcome aboard! It's about time someone from the republican party demonstrated clear, practical thinking. Obama IS what our time is calling for. I think he will make a great, thoughtful leader.

George   October 10th, 2008 7:16 pm ET

Wow!!!!

I always liked Wm Buckley – he was a very intelligent and interesting man.

I'm glad his son has some of his wisdom. Thinking about the US instead of just along party lines.

Thank you Mr. Buckley, for your analysis and statements.

DEM   October 10th, 2008 7:16 pm ET

All of my neo-con friends (lost souls, all) are feeling sick right now. I love it!!!

S. Holt   October 10th, 2008 7:16 pm ET

Well stated, 'what a historical moment is calling for.' Welcome on board the Obama/Biden train of the future.

Adam in Omaha   October 10th, 2008 7:16 pm ET

This republican and his family is voting Obama this year. Glad to see another!

I am switching to democrat after the election though!

Anonymous   October 10th, 2008 7:16 pm ET

when the Republicans turn on their own you know it's game over! McCain is going to have to start calling Obama an alien soon to get air time

Lesley   October 10th, 2008 7:16 pm ET

Excellent endorsement! He said everything I have been thinking but it's so much more powerful coming from a staunch Repub conservative. McCain has lost his glow, among other things. I am heartened to see that even conservatives are acknowledging that John McCain is not the person or leader he once was. It confirms that it is McCain who is putting himself first before the country.

JOfromATLforObamaBiden   October 10th, 2008 7:16 pm ET

Another one jumping over to the democratic team. You have to be more than brain dead to vote for Mccain. I mean this guy put it nice and simple...that bimbo that mccain selected has no experience, if he dies tomorrow, because belive me he is already in Gods waiting room..this bimbo will take over...can't even speak..let alone run this country. Mccains tactics are dirty and racial, we dont need a president that wants to devide the people..we already had that with bush.

Obama/biden 08

jeff - Dallas   October 10th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

Actually I think hell HAS frozen over!!

50 year old college educated white Texan for Obama

Theogracias   October 10th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

One more Buckley and we have....wait for it.....a Buckley's mixture!

Wendel, Lakeland, FL   October 10th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

Thanks for your support. Hopefully, more conservative Republicans can follow suit. God bless you.

SoCal   October 10th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

It's interesting how people with ideas and who really put their country first – regardless of their political background – come to the same conclusion: "Obama has the potential to be a good, perhaps even great leader".

Kelly Smith   October 10th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

Yay, we welcome you. I hope you become a lifelong Democrat :)

Joe   October 10th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

Welcome aboard!

Obama/Biden '08

Jeff from Wisconsin   October 10th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

This is a great example of one being truly open minded and voting their conscience rather than party lines. Now, if only every one else could do the same and look beyond race, etc...

Anne   October 10th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

well McCain he isnt the only one who thinks you are off the rails and arent to be trusted.

Lenoroc   October 10th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

It's nice to see Obama reaching across party lines, namely those of disgruntled Republicans who are seeing the candidates for who they are. The CNN fact check even keeps debunking McCain's "truths."

Ya Think?   October 10th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

It's a new day people. Hope and change not hopeless and deranged. Get it together and help pull our country together and our lives with it.

Patrick   October 10th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

My kind of conservative. Mark my words, the Sarah Palin evangelicals will destroy the Republican Party.

OHIO FOR OBAMA   October 10th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

Way to go Buckley. Welcome aboard the OBAMA EXPRESS, headed to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

MarioB. from Berlin for OBAMA/BIDEN   October 10th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

nice :)
FInally some conservatives begin to wake up, vote Obama and make clear, the 2000's McCain is completely opposite of this year's one!!!

wtg America :)

Newsweek has Obama leading by 11% :)

Obama/Biden in a landslide!

Ronald   October 10th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

Everyone with a brain, both Republican and Democrat has come to realize. Obama is a decent man with an intelligent plan. McBush is an angry confused old man of below average intelligence and a nasty despicable campaign.

VETS4Obama   October 10th, 2008 7:12 pm ET

WOW....an honest Republican? How rare!!! Good for you Christopher

dustin   October 10th, 2008 7:12 pm ET

the smart conservatives are starting to see mccain for who he is

OBAMA/BIDEN '08   October 10th, 2008 7:12 pm ET

Another Republican comes to his senses. Obama/Biden is what the country has been waiting for and been in need of...calm, intelligent leadership in the White House.

Go Obama/Biden '08

WOW!!!   October 10th, 2008 7:12 pm ET

WOW!!!!!! Now this is going to hurt McCain...

VA will go BLUE!!!!!!!!!   October 10th, 2008 7:12 pm ET

The painful truth that all republicans must now face. The Republican party is in shambles.
