Sen. McCain is facing criticism over his mortgage plan.

(CNN) – John McCain is facing a fresh round of anger from members of his own party deeply opposed to the Arizona senator's proposal for the federal government to purchase troubled mortgage loans.

he pointed backlash from several economic conservatives — many of whom already distrust McCain's commitment to free-market principles — couldn't come at a worse time for the Republican presidential nominee less than four weeks before Election Day as he stares at a significant deficit in national and state polls.

Watch: McCain mortgage plan has liberal roots

But at a time when McCain can't afford to worry about a lack of support from his party's base, several conservatives are openly criticizing the plan as a flagrant reward for reckless behavior among lenders.

Watch: Families react to McCain mortgage proposal

In a sharply worded editorial on its Web site Thursday, the editors of The National Review — an influential bastion of conservative thought — derided the plan as "creating a level of moral hazard that is unacceptable" and called it a "gift to lenders who abandoned any sense of prudence during the boom years."

John McCain and Palin are surviving because of the ignorance, isolationism, and prejudices of many within their electorate.

His campaign events are starting to resemble more and more the KKK rallies of the 1940-50s.

John McCain and Sarah Palin are going to get someone killed.

Peter of Oregon   October 10th, 2008 10:39 am ET

What do you expect? McCain's a Maverick! Not only do the Democrats and Independants not like his ideas and brand of politics, but the Republicans don't care for them much either. The only people that support him are the ones that focus on his POW experience, or ignore his actual policies in support of the "McCain persona" his campaign has carefully crafted.

Stacey M.   October 10th, 2008 10:39 am ET

Now, now everyone. We shouldn't be so negative about McCain. I think we should all encourage him. So lets all cheer when he says something unintelligent, or throws out an idea that did orginally come from a Demo. We should applaud. After all the whole he is digging is his grave, not ours.

Hey McCain and Palin—
Keep talking your hate filled message to your lynch mob crowds.

Is that what you Republicans are these days?

A crowd of Lynch Mobs? Is that what we Americans would have to look foward to, if you were to win??

Think about that — Republican voters.

Is this what you want leading your party??

We have an economic crisis.

Your Candidates offer nothing, but hate filled speeches that incite violence.

Do you really want a country that supports Lynch Mob Crowds???

A quarter of this country wants change but is afraid of what it might bring.
The other quarter is terrified of change and is willing to fight to keep it from happening.

It's very hard to criticize John McCain on any position since, he keep flip flopping several times a day.

I think that old John is losing control mentally and I sure would be worried about him in a position of authority.

McCain has a new position every day and probably doesn't even remember what he said yesterday.

My property value has dropped but I still pay my mortgage on time. With McCain's new proposal, I should stop paying my mortgage so that I can benefit by getting my property value readjusted thus paying a lower mortgage payment. I don't think this is smart. It will make things worse. People will stop paying their mortgages just so they can qualify for this plan.

to Veteran,
The markets are down because people all over the world have lost faith in the failed excesses of this administration and the extreme form of capitalism without responsibility that it has pushed for 8 years.
The Obama campaign is up in the polls because the people in this country have lost faith in that same mentality.

Instead of lashing out, look deeper and understand the problem please.

As a veteran and a citizen of this country you have my deepest respect. Please show the same respect to your fellow Americans.

Can you imagine that the idea that the government would jump in and buy something that could potentially cost the tax payers big bucks would thrill conservatives? The idea that was proposed struck me as something a much more liberal person would do. I thought that he would have suggested something that Gordon Brown was doing in Britian — buying prefered stock in 8 banks. That could be seen as socializing the banks or putting money into an investment and hoping to get some money back.

TONY   October 10th, 2008 10:08 am ET

MCCAIN IS IN FULL CRISIS MODE.

HE IS PANIC STRICKEN AND DESPERATE AND IS NOW ACTING IRRATIONALLY 24/7.

IF PEOPLE THINK THINGS ARE BAD NOW, VOTE FOR MCCAIN AND HIS DIMWITTED, INCOHERENT, BABBLING RUNNING MATE AND WATCH THINGS GET MUCH WORSE.

FOR THOSE WHO ARE FREAKING OUT OVER THE LOSSES TO THEIR 401(k)'S, PENSIONS, RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS AND A REAL POSSIBILITY OF LOSING THEIR JOBS, A VOTE FOR MCCAIN WILL GUARANTEE THAT YOU WON'T HVE TO WORRY ABOUT THOSE THINGS ANDY LONGER BECAUSE………………………..YOU WILL HAVE LOST IT ALL.

darrell   October 10th, 2008 10:08 am ET

For every unreasonable, stupid, inane comment that comes from McCain or Palin, Obama and Biden have a reasonable, sound, intelligent response. The McCain/Palin rhetoric is doing nothing but appealing to their core constituency, which they already had in their pockets. It does not appeal to those that will decide this election, the independents. Fortunately those voters are intelligent enough to see through the vapid statements made by the Repubs.

I'm not a conservative and I have trouble bailing out banks that made bad loans. I't bad enought we bailed out wall street. We need to hold company's and CEO's accountable for this economic mess. Time for the fat cat's to pay up!!!! John McCain and his wife are one of those fat cat's in many ways too. John wants to keep protecting his rich friends.

Lovey   October 10th, 2008 10:07 am ET

If John use the money that is within the bailout, then what good is it doing the American Citizens to be taxed again. John is trying to say is a???? right now. If you resell houses at face value then what does that tell the American Peple John is no better than AIG and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mae inwhich he will have back in office. Everyone say thanks but no thanks to crazy Juhn McCrazy.

WELL GOOD! The Republican base should be ANGRY! WE ARE ALL IN THIS …….together!

Let me clarify something, the Media IS NOT, talking about the bad mortgages and it needs to!

There is a lot of misinformation out there:

THE LOW INCOME FOLKS ARE NOT THE ….ONLY…….ONES TO BLAME FOR THE MORTGAGE MELT DOWN!

THERE ARE PLENTY OF UPPER- AND -MIDDLE INCOME WHO GOT MORTGAGES ……..THEY……….. COULD………NOT……….AFFORD!

THE MAJORITY OF AMERICANS HAVE BEEN LIVING ABOVE THEIR MEANS………. THAT'S THE PROBLEM!

McCain's in quicksand. Failing around just makes you sink faster.

fishlips51   October 10th, 2008 10:06 am ET

John McCain is proving with every negative ad that he approves that he will definitely be "more of the same" if he gets elected. He is using "old politics" methods of smearing the oppositon in order to get the focus off of him and his lack of answers for the American people about the incredibly important issues going on right now. That avoidance tactic tells more about his beliefs, campaign and how he would act as President than his words. Obama has responded to the American people with answers and specific plans as John McCain has not and chooses not to do in these last weeks of campaigning. IF he really has better answers, then quit running negative ads, smearing the opposition, and give the people who he says he wants to represent the answers that they are looking for to decide who to elect. Stay away from "old politics" strategies and be honest! The lies and misrepresentations are not proving he is going to be any different from Bush.

ERP   October 10th, 2008 10:05 am ET

This hopeless man can't even count, but who cares when according to that great, experienced, wise hockey mom named Sarah Palin he is a Maverick.

RG   October 10th, 2008 10:05 am ET

His biggest mistake in this election was failing to adapt to changes in the race and manage his campaign and his message accordingly and in a way that represented his base as well as other Americans. He has demonstrated to be incapable of dealing with new and unexpected challenges in today's complex society.

He makes decisions based on his gut and not reason. Plus, he does not know how to surround himself with smart people who can advise him properly. He may have years of experience in the government, but at this point, is not just experience that is needed in the White House, we need rationality, innovation, sound judgment, new perspectives, we need a new start. We need Barack Obama!

mmd   October 10th, 2008 10:04 am ET

This is in reference to the before article, mccain has another keating in his life. I wonder if he is related to the CHEAT keating of keating five.

mccain should be jailed for holding KKK inciting cross burning rallies.

What happened to mccain, the Repg party should be ashame of themselves. That know that mccain in here- there, in – out, sanity and insanity, but always old and out of touch.

No Way, No How, No McPalin   October 10th, 2008 10:04 am ET

The conservatives are worried about a hard right agenda when Obama is elected…But we had a hard right agenda for 6 years and look where it has gotten us! Get over it!

J.D.   October 10th, 2008 10:04 am ET

One more example — as if we needed more — that John McCain is a RECKLESS LOOSE CANNON. This guy is unfit to be president. He makes rash decisions without thinking them through. That's fine when you are a Senator and have 99 other Senators to dilute your wild maverick mood swings, but when you are president you need to be calm, steady, thoughtful, and dependable. You need to be a rock. In fact, you need to be like Barack.

Let it Go .... Indiana   October 10th, 2008 10:02 am ET

John -

Back out of the race now. Save your dignity.

Position the country for healing.

Maggie from Virginia   October 10th, 2008 10:02 am ET

McCain is a loose cannon people. Take it from someone who works closely with Capitol Hill, me. Everyone walks on egg shells around him because you never know when he is going to explode. His handlers don't know how to manage him, that's why his campaign is all over the place. It's really difficult to work with him.

PA Independent   October 10th, 2008 10:02 am ET

Is McCain the "Conservative" espousing socialism to brush up his "Maverick" bona fides in a doomed attempt to woo moderates, or is it because he was actually giving "Straight Talk' when he stated he didn't know much about the economy? At this pont, does it matter?

"Oh yeah, the stock market fell 500 points in 5 minutes today, sure I feel your pain – but how 'bout that Ayres?"

You can't print what I think about McCain/Palin. I'll take That One, thank you.

Stacy from Loudoun County VA   October 10th, 2008 10:02 am ET

The "Georgetown Cocktail Circuit crowd" is turning on John McCain. The "meat and potatoes" crowd is yelling at John McCain. The media that was so friendly with John McCain and invited him to every talking head show has turned on him. John McCain is a true Maverick…he is going to be all by himself if he keeps this up!

This swift boating must stop so that we can start to heal our nation for our children and grandchildren.

How is he going to buy up these bad mortgages when he invokes a spending freeze. His own policies contradict each other.

Shawn - GA   October 10th, 2008 9:58 am ET

This money was already being paid by the American people, John is not asking for MORE money. He is saying we fix the problem now, instead of giving the money to the mortgage companies who upon taking the losses on the loans will then come back with hat in hand to get more money from us.

John's way goes around all of that and gets the job done quickly, no wonder washington doesn't like it. They prefer to line the pockets of people along the way.

Tired of McCain/Palin Negativity   October 10th, 2008 9:58 am ET

McCain really thinks his new tactic will work???? Without any thought process at looking into this carefully, he comes up with a dumb, ridicoulous, ERRACTIC idea which shows he is just like the current President who should be Impeach. My fellow Americans lets do Bush, Cheney, McCain and Palin the justice of saying HELL NO, we are not going to take it anymore.

Peter   October 10th, 2008 9:58 am ET

You've got nothing. No one cares about Ayers but your shrinking base. You can insite all the anger and try to make your unstable fans go out and riot all you like.

You have lost all honor. I just hope you lose this election as well!

Tracy   October 10th, 2008 9:55 am ET

Well, everyone told him he needed to come up with "something" to counter the detailed and well thought-out plan Obama had. So he came up with "something." Never mind that the "something" he came up with is supposed to already be addressed in the $700 billion bailout. Never mind that it's on the fly and thrown together with very little thought for consequences. It's "something," anyway — isn't that what the people wanted? Jeez, if he'd known this was coming, maybe he would have "something" positive and practical to offer. Of course, if he's elected President, he'll have to come up with "something" on a daily basis. I was never going to vote for him, but at least he had my respect. Emphasis on "had."

Scott NYC Independent   October 10th, 2008 9:55 am ET

McCain is inept, confused, erratic and desperate. He sees his last chance for his lifes ambition slipping away…………….

CD   October 10th, 2008 9:55 am ET

Bush's base never liked McCain. It was not until McBush hired the same guys who worked for Bush (8 years ago) that they started to come around to him. The Bush boys told him to select Ms Alaska (they really want her…not him). They tried to hide this financial meltdown until after the election to help get that 3rd term for Bush. When that didn't happen, they want to talk about any and everything (except the economy).

Republican Voting OBAMA   October 10th, 2008 9:55 am ET

He is an idiot, this is just like the gas tax holiday to buy voter's, he thinks he is so clever, he is an idiot. I can't believe there are still people willing to vote another idiot into the white house, how much worse does the economy have to get before everyone is in agreement that we need a smart candidate, someone with brains, not an old bafoon with a second rate model with a degree in journalism…

Elizabeth - Texas - Former Republican   October 10th, 2008 9:54 am ET

The Republicans need to be mad at John McCain. The campaign he has run is horrible. His choice for his VP choice without vetting her he horrible. Now he is campaigning on drug use. Look at Cindy and Palins record of drug use along with Palins family.

Obama and Biden are both fighters; Biden the guy that will knock you out when you reach his boiling point and Obama the one that will set the trap and corner you laying body blow after body blow.

This administration will be a serious one and one not to be toyed with at home or abroad. This is a team we can believe in. This is our national pride.

Jackie   October 10th, 2008 9:53 am ET

I don't agree with the homeowners bailout either. If you're going to help the people who are losing their homes, then you might as well take it a step further and help the ones who are struggling to keep their homes. Re-evaluate all the mortgage loans that are "upside down". All or nothing, and I go for nothing.

Why is that? Are they scared of the repugs or are they in bed with them?

a.m. Friday.

In a phone interview today, Monegan underlined his view that Todd Palin was one of the people applying pressure to fire Trooper Wooten.

Todd admits "he's been campaigning [to fire Wooten] for years… I think he had a kind of obsession with it."

Sue in MI   October 10th, 2008 9:49 am ET

Yeah, the wheels are coming off the Straight Talk Express. Maybe had he stayed true to the core values he espouses but doesn't follow, he'd have kept this close. Instead, he chose to take the low road (and Cindy, Obama did not begin this mud-your husband did, and has done nothing but fling it for 6 weeks!) and continue to lie (the bridge came up AGAIN YESTERDAY for God's sakes!) even though he promised to run a clean campaign. He had one last chance last week to stand up for "no earmarks" and "fiscal responsibility" and vote against the bailout, but no, he couldn't even do that.

joyce   October 10th, 2008 9:49 am ET

It was a plan seemingly handed to him at the last minute before the debate. He did not study it nor investigated it. Did not look deeply enough. That's the problem with McCain. Because his basic sense of the economy is not there. He is out of touch, he lacks the fundamental understanding of the issue.

Contrast that with Obama who apart from having the mental fortitude to understand economics, actually went through life juggling funds and experiencing what the ordinary folks go through. College loans, medical expenses and all. That is why he connects with people when he talks economy. That is why he offers a more substantive solution.

According to the Esquire :

Why After 75 Years, Esquire Endorsed a Presidential Candidate

"Over the past two years, we've published four substantive pieces about Senator McCain, including one cover profile. He's a man we have long respected and liked, but the man running for president is a very different man from the John McCain we wrote about two years ago, or 8 months ago, or just a few weeks ago."

John McCain is dangerous. He is throwing everything out there hoping something will stick. The only problem is almost everything he is throwing is rebounding and sticking to himself.
