Sen Barack Obama speaks during a rally in Chillicothe, Ohio, on Friday.

JEFFERSON CITY, Missouri – Sen. Barack Obama on Friday unveiled a plan to help rescue small-business owners struggling to stay afloat in the sinking economy.

Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee, called for a program of loans for small businesses made through either the federal Small Business Administration's Disaster Loan Program or by private lenders. The private loans also would be guaranteed by the SBA, Obama said.

The plan also would eliminate all capital gains taxes for small businesses and start-ups, Obama said during a rally in Chillicothe, Ohio. He said a similar program was created after the September 11 terrorist attacks.

"This is not a time for ideology. This is a time for common sense and a politics of pragmatism," Obama said. "The test of an idea must not be whether it's liberal or conservative — whether it's Republican or Democrat. The test should be whether it works for the people of Chillicothe, the people of Ohio and the American people."

Saying "it's easy to rile up a crowd by stoking anger and division," Obama also chided his Republican rival, Sen. John McCain, for running "misleading ads" and pursuing "the politics of anything goes."

I love how McCain's 401K plan from today is great and this one is the same thing McCain has been saying all along, but these tweeny Obamaphiles are here praising this and bashing McCain. Pitiful. Obama hasn't even really turned us Dems away from him – it's his pathetic supporters and their single-digit IQs.

I don't understand. Some peopleare going to ignore this, but this is an idea. Ideas are currently what we need to fix our financial crisis. I don't care about the college professor Bill Ayers and his relationship with Obama while they worked to improve education. I don't care if you think because of a photo that the republican camp first approved for newsweek but now they complain that "it doesn't make Palin look beautiful."(Can we say celebrity.) The only thing I care about is an idea or a plan to help us get out of this financial crisis. Obama has come up with a legitimate plan or idea to help. This is leadership. This is the right way to go. Inciting hate is the wrong way. If you watch the McCain rallies or town halls lately all you see and hear from the crowds is hate. This needs to stop. Obama has run a great campaign and has a really great message of coming together.

I guarentee that none of these ignorant fools calling Obama a Marxist has ever even read Marx or know what they are talking about. The anti-intelectualism on the right has destroyed the Republican party and made it an international laughing stock. Obama has absolutely nothing in common with Marx by the way, but I guess that makes me an elitist for knowing what I am talking about…

I'm the owner of a small business – two person company that occasionally hires subcontractors. Business was slow this summer, we hung in there. It's ok at the moment, but if the economy continues to tank, it may not be so good come winter. My business serves other small businesses and start-ups – if they get a break, I'll be busy too. Thank you Senator Obama – yes we CAN!

Thousands of people have been purged from the voter registrations files and your vote will not count. And it's coming out that it is mostly Democrats (they haven't released numbers). To great idea, but…, would you perfer a president that does not pay attention the the conditions we are in? As conditions change then plans change. If many will take the time and recall, Obama spent so much time defending the fact that he is HUMAN until he didn't have much time to lay out his plans for us. If Obama was a white candidate against McCain with the same message, he would be about 35 point up in the polls.

So much credit is given to Obama for "running " the democratic campaign with dignity. Give me a break. He's just lapping up the gaga of some of you. He's afraid of McCain and the morality he stand for. He's so scared of Gov Palin precisely because she is articulate, strong, intelligent, independent, and speaks the truth.
You are all free to find out the truth about his past for yourselves, it's all out there if you just choose to see. I am so afraid that Obama will be elected and our country given away to socialism, islam, and all the immoral lies that have been perpetrated in his campaign. It's about time someone acknledges the importance of small business and their contribution to America! Small business owners are an important part of our economy, both RURAL and URBAN locations.

How did your grand parents and great-grand parents earn their livings? Most of them were entrepreneurs and small business owners. We've stretched our corporations and governments too much, it's time to get back to basics — small businesses, which are the backbone of the U.S.

To all those saying that Obama is constantly flip-flopping: Can a person not change their mind? Can a person not react to an ever shifting situation? Its called thinking on your feet, and I'd much rather have a President with a shorter record, who thinks on their feet, than a President who sits on their butt and complains about nothing getting done and then tries to pin it all on anybody but themselves.

great great idea… but

This is what a president does. He is human he is not going to know everything but the fact that he is willing to ask those that do know shows his leadership abilities. That is the problem with McCain he is so much of a "maverick" that he is not even working with his own advisors or party for that matter. He has put winning above what is best for the country. He know it all but want share what he knows until he is elected. He doesn't care about this country. He has said as much and now he is showing it!

Rather than spending precious time and energy on belittling John McCain, Barack Obama is actually spending his time searching for solutions to help small businesses and people in this time of economic crisis. There is absolutely nothing presidential about John McCain's current campaign and actions, and he should follow in Barack Obama's footsteps to try to seek out ways to ease the burden of this economic crisis that is plaguing all Americans. Sarah Palin and John McCain need to stop their negative and hate-mongering "campaign to nowhere" and pay attention to what the American people really want to hear–solutions to solve the economic crisis that is threatening our great nation.

Mark   October 10th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

Want to know the easiest way to tell someone isn't being a 'pragmatist'? When they feel the need to call themselves one. If Obama really was, it would be apparent without saying so. I will give Obama and the Democratic party credit. They have scared the hell out of the middle of the road folks into thinking government (under them) will solve their problems. The post "Palin: Obama puts Ambition over Country" is really a sad reflection on how far the McCain camp will go with this smear campaign. Coming from someone who didn't blink when offered the position of VP after a brief meeting with McCain itself speaks volumes for the case of "Blind Ambition."
The Issues Mrs Palin is really what the Americian people are interested in…..that would be a good example of putting Country first. Its the Economy stupid!

Mr. Obama…if federal dollars will be used for this then they will be subject to current laws restricting non-minorities from being eligible. Aren't there already loans and grants for creation of minority enterprises? If you want to remove the ideology from the debate–open the funds for all Americans.

Unless there is a waiver–this "gimme" will only be availabe to women, native Americans, hispanics, blacks, asian pacific Americans. If you want to "stoke up a crowd Mr. Obama" just try dedicating even more of taxpayers dollars to programs that discriminate against working white men trying to estalish their own business. Despite common myth–most do not have rich Republican Fathers or Uncles.

great idea, but...   October 10th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

This man changes his position HOURLY… now as we near the elections, he comes out wanting to eliminate capital gains tax – which is the exact thing John McCain has been saying all along. Funny how Obama was so 'tax, tax, tax' up until now. Voters are crazy if they think he's going to cut taxes after he is elected. And the only reason he comes up with this now is because he HAS to. Earlier this week, he asked his advisors for ideas on how to stimulate the economy – so this is undoubtedly him taking credit for one of those ideas one of his advisors came back with. Again, I don't believe for one minute he is going to be this diligent and proactive once he gets the big white house!

Sen. Empty suit, the marxist, has nothing in his background to suggest these are antything more than just words to get elected by.

I'd rather hear the senator tell us more about his "non" relationships with ACORN, Bill Ayers, Rev Wright, Franklin Raines, Calipso Louie Farrahkan.

Or better still, we can all sit around the campfire and let Joe Biden tell us more stories about what he watched on tv in 1929.

Or we can all just sit here and read the garbage that the paid liberal bloggers are printing based on the talking points memo they received from Howard "52 states" Dean this morning.

My comments are being moderated by CNN, so I cannot tell you how patriotic it is for you to solve problems and help the people of this country with solutions. CNN is more interested in negative discourse that keeps people arguing. They always print negative headlines or show you in an unfavorable light. The give a platform for your opponent to preview his hateful ads that are full of lies. And they "moderate" comments that do not support their agenda. The McCain/Palin rallies look like Klan meetings. OMG – can't someone do something about them!!! Obama shows great restraint considering Palin and McCain are attempting to paint him as a terrorist with their totally racists comments. I guess McCain is too old to remember the character beating he got from Bush in 2000. My children are really interested in this campaign, but I will not allow them to watch the McCain/Palin rallies for fear they will go to school and become afraid of someone with a name that may sound funny to them. While we're in a financial crisis, Obama is showing leadership and ideas, while Mccain and Pain only can try to tear down the winning person. Talk about sore losers. This is like the 4th quarter and you're down 20 points, so instead of trying your best, you start fouling everyone out of anger, hoping you'll get beaten a little less badly. Has anyone seen how Mccain uses "Chicago Politician" in his rallies? 2 things that I get from those words, "Mafia" and "Black man" And has anyone actually seen these rallies? Not one minority in the building. That's not the America I know, nor will ever want to be a part of. That's the Divided States of America. Talk about polar opposites: the best and smartest campaign ever run vs the worst and most degrading campaign ever run. Real leadership in a time of need.

Well, I think all we need to do to fix the economy is to get everyone in the country to get mad at Obama for knowing William Ayers! McCain has talked about nothing other than Ayers for what seems like weeks. Obama continues to talk about fixing the problems. Now, who do we want to vote for…?

Obama – the words and actions of a TRUE leader. Not the rhetoric of hate and divisiveness from McCain

As a small business owner, I've been hoping someone would get around to us. That's why from day one I thought McCain was too busy going negative rather than telling us why we should vote for him.

Finally, some plans…..

Way to go Obama! Stay positive, talk about real issues, just be yourself!

There are two kinds of people in the country right now:

1. People full of hope filled with a desire to work together to pull America up.

2. People who are terrified of losing power and yearn to hear hate and fear filled speeches disguised as patriotism.

Which side are you with?
