The McCain campaign is targeting Obama's connection to Ayers in a new ad.

(CNN) - John McCain is continuing his effort to associate Barack Obama with 1960's radical William Ayers, launching a national campaign ad Friday that accuses the Illinois senator of "blind ambition."

"Obama's blind ambition. When convenient, he worked with terrorist Bill Ayers. When discovered, he lied. Obama. Blind ambition. Bad judgment," the ad's narrator says.

Watch: Don't trust a 'Chicago politician' McCain says

Congressional liberals fought for risky sub-prime loans. Congressional liberals fought against more regulation," the narrator continues. "Then, the housing market collapsed costing you billions. In crisis, we need leadership, not bad judgment."

Watch: The latest McCain campaign ad targets Obama's 'bind ambition'

The spot is the latest in a series of attempts by the Arizona senator’s campaign to raise questions about Obama's past ,and portray the Democratic presidential nominee as less than candid about his political origins.

In 2002 McCain said about his own campaign that he was driven by ambition because he thought it was his last chance to become President – he admitted in his book that he lied to the American people just to become President.

Maybe that's why he thinks everyone would do the same ?

Greg Rodgers   October 10th, 2008 12:40 pm ET

McCain is appealing to the uneducated and those with underlying racist feelings in this country. Is this Good Judgement? When this election is over, I certainly hope hate crimes do not go up because McCain has definately stoked this fire.

Obama is not a terrorist. He is not a muslim. I think all of the people out there that are questioning him are not listening or reading. Many news outlets have covered this AYERS nonsense. All of stated exacly what Obama has stated. You people just won't give it up because you want McCain to win.

McCain/Palin and his followers: Please crawl back under a rock.

Dawn from Denver, Colorado   October 10th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

It doesn't make any sense to come out with this sort of ad now – it is vicious and oversimplifies the situation. The only people this ad will play to are their supporters – not the undecideds. People who at this point are undecided I have to believe are those that are continuing to weigh the issues and sifting through things. Really trying to understand the issues and what each platform is proposing. Those who can be swayed by emotional propaganda have already made up their minds. This can only hurt, not help, their cause with those that are still deciding.

Robert   October 10th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

If you look at the "sound bite" given by Barack, the source is Fox News. Go figure.

McCain is like a mad stalker on this issue. Keating 5 – John, Keating 5!

Mike   October 10th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

"Congressional liberals fought against more regulation," the narrator continues.

Really?!? This claim is laughable. Since Reagan's election in 1980, all we've heard from Republicans is "deregulate, deregulate, deregulate". And, "government isn't the solution, it's the problem." And, "the free market will protect us all, and resolve all the problems."

Now, McCain's ad tries to pin responsibility for this mess on "congressional liberals"??? Please. Conservative economic philosophy, represented and advanced by Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II and their acolytes, is what got us here. Most of the country now knows this, and the Republicans can't even acknowledge their part of the responsibility for it, instead trying to shift blame off of themselves. Sleazy and contemptible. And Repubs wonder why they're in trouble in this election.

Americans, DO NOT VOTE FOR THESE REPUBLICAN JOKERS AGAIN !!!

Lame-brain McCane is truly suffering from post-traumatic stupidity disorder (PTSD)...and his sidekicks; his former addicted stepford wife and the hypocrite is lipstick will simply self-distruct...even as the global economy swirls into utter chaos.

slc in ny   October 10th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

While the McCain team is using their brains to come up with all of the negative ads, they should be going back to the drawing board to figure out how to fix the economy and rethink their presentation to buy bad mortgages. I am very dissappointed in the Republican team. I always thought that they were the sophisticated, educated party but Sarah Palin does not exemplify these traits and is a great dissappointment being on a National ticket. I am sure the world is saying, "what is happening to the great USA?"
With the troopergate issue and Todd Palin seeming to be her Lt. Governor, Alaska and the Pain administration appears to be a political "Payton Place."

Melissa   October 10th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

The only people who will believe this is the conservative base. They're candidate cannot address the real issues that Americans face, so why not turn this into a high school STUCO campaign with juvenile tactics and name calling? I hope that the American people truly see McCain for what he really is: a washed-up, old man with absolutely nothing to offer.

Truman   October 10th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

What can the average American do to stop this. My donation reflect just gets stronger! I hope others feel the same.

When is blind ambition bad? 232 years ago a group of men had the blind ambition needed to stand up for what they believed in. If those individuals didn't have blind ambition what would have became of this country we live in?

Come on Democrats! Let's fight back against the fear/smear tactics coming from the McFailin campaign! The stakes are too high for us to let them walk all over us. Any links you find about the McFailin campaign, please put it on the blogs! If they want to play hardball, let's show them that we can throw the ball the hardest! This crap has gotten out of control over the past six days. McSame doesn't have any other option but to show fear and disrespect! Let's disrespect them back. Obama couldn't get a security clearance due to these relationships. How about ACORN and all the fraudulent voter's registrations. You remember ACORN whose affiliate recieved $800,000 from Obama's campaign to register voters? Obama's supporters would rather win by lying and cheating then by fairness. How does that bode well for this nation? By the way CNN....why no articles on the Saudi's walking out on OPEC. Yeah, apparently their tired of Hugo Chavez and Iran and all their B.S. Why no articles on the World Bank hacking situation. Why all the falsified "Obama is so great articles" and nothing about the important news?

What frosts me the most is your current offerings to the American people. A governor with “executive experience” and an I.Q. slightly above her shoe size. An old man that mumbles about dead Presidents, old, old war stories and swinging wildly from one perceived “crisis”(read photo op) such as hurricanes, Georgia and the most important, his “economic expertise” that was so critical to the current global crisis he had to rush back to D.C. to share it with Congress. This team insists on yammering and blathering about an activist in the ‘60’s that went on to work with a man that was 8 during the ‘60’s, his past drug use and his minister. Get a clue, reptilians we are the “baby boomers” remember us? We were in the ‘60’s and active, in the ‘70’s we did WAY more drugs than Obama could in two life times, and we do not care who a person’s religious advisor is or was or will be. That is his personal right and freedom, to you religious facists, it is known as freedom of religion, and the definition is not restricted to YOUR religion.. Here is the definition of irrelevant “having no bearing on or connection with the subject at issue; "an irrelevant comment"; "irrelevant allegations". That is why we did not get our knickers in a knot like reptilians did over some slobber on a blue dress. So, keep your self-righteous indignation to yourselves, We want no part of it. Just keep it up and offer no plan of action other than those tired old stories. I want to hear what your going to do so I can still retire in 7 years, I do NOT want to hear more old Viet Nam Poor Old Warrior stories! The Reptilian Party has been reduced to a national joke and the bobble head is the punch line.

Yes, ditto... What everyone else in the country except for those at the McPalin hate-rallies are saying...

More of the same destructive, terror-filled lies. It's a familiar pattern of scaring Americans into giving up their civil liberties, their rationality, and their good judgment to serve the needs of a few, or in this case, McCain.

America is better than these two. I'm proud that we're finally going to stand up to this nonsense. Yes we can.

CNN please post this!   October 10th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

After seeing the way these people behave at the McCain-Palin rallies I have decided to vote Democrat for the first time in my life. If McCain didn't agree with what these people were shouting, he would stop the rally and have them escorted away. Booing is one thing. Shouting "kill him!" is another. According to their own logic used against Obama and Rev. Wright/Ayers, if you don't speak out against something right in front of your eyes then you condone it. Period.

McCain is asking a question that is about to blow up in his face. Obama is ready for the question. And his response will be mind blowing.

In addition, Talk Radio is now getting desperate. They are flipping on all their positions. None of the host has a consistent message. There even seems to be infighting between shows. They are trying to scare voters, and acting like madmen. They are loosing creditability trying to defend and sell the McCain Campaign. It is clear they are desperate, because they are reaching for any wind of scandal they can find, and spreading it without checking the facts. They are trying to criticize CNN for not participating in their sleaze fest. The more they lose, the better CNN will do. CNN please do not listen or be influenced by their rhetoric. What they know, is depending on the outcome of this election. You will win, and they will lose, for cretin.

McCain, you have disgraced yourself and become a national shame with your campaign of divisive hatred and incitement. You spew smears and slurs, urge hatred and threats, and pit American against American. As you engage in your reprehensible conduct, our economy dies and we suffer. You are self-absorbed, hiding behind the cliche of "Country First." This is about YOUR ambition and how you are willing to sacrifice us all in YOUR pursuit of the White House. You are unfit for that high office, sir, Unfit.

I am deeply disappointed in McCain for resorting to these tactics to win the election. I really thought he was above this kind of sleaze

"Ambition." You mean like you had in the book you wrote, Big J? Let's see, when an individual decides he/she wants to be President of the U.S., they are usually have a large ego and ambition to burn. Big J, start talking about issues. Oh, forgot. A campaign stated you would lose, if you took this avenue. Good thing we are used to the Neo-Con way of attempting to win elections:

Who cares about issues, simply degrade your opponent.

The problem with McCain / Palin is; even if there were truth and facts in any of their current claims (which all have been debunked over and over again the last 20 months) they have no credibility left. All anyone has to do is spend some time on factcheck.org to see the lie after lie, the complete distortion of record and the personal attacks they have deployed in their attempt to win the White House.

We can listen to the hate and lies and be brain washed into believing this desperate propaganda or we can educate ourselves and learn the facts and find the truth. Even Joe Biden, who once said that Barack Obama was dangerous and wasn’t prepared, now recognizes what a great leader Obama is and what a great President he will be. It’s funny what happens when you look someone in the eye and get to know their heart.

I’m a proud American, from the great state of Iowa, who served my country. I’m a white Christian father of three teenagers. I love my country, my family and my Lord. I must do what is right for all three.

John McCain is surviving because of the ignorance, isolationism, and prejudices of many within their electorate, as his campaign events are starting to resemble more and more the KKK rallies of the 1940-50s.

Senators Obama and Biden are thriving for the sake of the intelligence, global-minded perspective, and education of their electorate.

John McCain and Sarah Palin are going to get someone killed.

I have listened to Senator Obama, and I have watched him handle himself with dignity and I must vote for this man. I do not look at the color of his skin as that is not important. Apparently, McCain is willing to let the entire country go to hell along with his reputation just to win this thing.

Says alot about the character of a man when he can knife you in the back at his rallies or on TV (or let his women do it for him), but not even look at you in a one-on-one debate, much less attack you personally.

Makes me wonder what he thinks about himself right now. I know what I think.

I am shocked that McCain is getting so negative- he has too many skeletons that he would like to keep in the closet. Beyond that I think it is horrible what they are doing to Ayers. I admit that I know very little about this man but from what I can gather Ayers was demonstrating against the VietNam war and possibly went too far. However, as far as I can see he was neither convicted or even charged with anything and yet now, 40 years later, when he is a college professor and is working with, and even honored by his community, he is being vilified by Palin/McCain and even the press. It would seem that he is living a productive, humanitarian life and he is being attacked for what may have happened 40 years ago. This is wrong. To connect Obama with the events of 40 years ago is absurd.

Angry Republican   October 10th, 2008 12:37 pm ET

If the republicans could have picked a presidential candidate who is somewhat sane and rational and a vp candidate w/ one eye and half a brain I would probably be voting Republican. I can't in good conscience vote for that ticket and feel that I made the right choice in those who will lead us for the next 4-8 years. That is why I (and a few other here at work) have made a pact to keep an eye on the speeches, interviews and the debate for the next week and every time McCain says the words "my friends", "Ayers", "who is Barak Obama" or "POW" and every time Palin says the word "maverick" I am adding them all up and donating a $1 for each instance. A couple of the guys here are going to do $5 per instance. I hope they keep it up. The more they say it... the more money goes right to Obama's campaign.

Anybody else wanna make that pledge as well? Even if it is a dime per instance... every penny helps!

McCain's erratic behavior has been talked about a lot by many. Even most conservative Republican senators have been talking about it repeatedly. "The bomb, bomb, bomb Iran" reaction is not an isolated incidcent. Consider the following:

In late January, Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., told the Boston Globe that the thought of McCain being president "sends a cold chill down my spine."

"He's erratic. He's hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me," Cochran told the newspaper.

Wal   October 10th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

McCain wants to balance the budget by 2013.
The problem is, he doesn't know yet how the deficit may looks like in 3 months.
Bush made the same promise to cut in half in 2004 election and where are we now?

He said he knows how to fix the social security. And the solution is commission. Or he pledged to not raise tax during his term. How can he be open to a commission and not open to raise tax in order to fix the social security?

He said he know how to win wars. And was advocated to go to Iraq and almost forget or doesn’t believe that the fundamental of the war against terrorism is in Afghanistan.
He said he know how to get Ben laden. It is unpatriotic to not tell that to generals how to catch Ben laden.

Does McCain he mean what he said or is the product of his Age?

We saw this movie before ... that will not work again. This year2008 is different.

The repubs are doomed this year, no more, not after the dismal 8 years of the republican administration.

Obama/Biden will fix the country, the economy, and create jobs for Americans.

Landslide Obama/Biden 08/12.

I will be voting for McCain.I also believe Obama will win.
Once this election is over, perhaps it will be a good time to start acting like the family this countries people should be.
Just a thought !!!

good luck to you all

This economic crisis is being fanned by anxiety and fear of AN UPCOMING HIGHER TAXES AND UNKNOWN CHANGE if Obama wins (which is more likely).
I am an investor/economist, I know how it is, so I already put my money on a safe place.

Chris K   October 10th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

WOW! The McCain campaign is truly going down in flames! So sad that John McCain has let his campaign degenerate into such a dishonorable, unpresidential mess!

Cal in Houston   October 10th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

I can see where this strategy is leading. If McCain gets even close to Obama in a few key states, he's going to start saying that Obama cheated. That's why they are trying their best to make this ACORN and "terrorist" business stick. If I'm right, McCain is terrible because he's going to try and rip this country apart just to win. The Republicans really need to chill out. If you can't win based on ideas and policies, then you don't deserve to win.

David from Ohio   October 10th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

McCain's personal attacks on Obama aren't going to convince a single uncommitted or independent voter to support McCain. Keeping whipping up the conservative base as they take the Straight Talk Express right off the cliff. We won't miss you.

JG   October 10th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

I was this close to voting for Obama. But now that McCain raises this issue, that changes everything. I mean, blind ambition – the nerve of this guy! Who does he think he is?

BJ   October 10th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

Obama's campaign contributed $800k to ACORN who is now being investigated for voter registration fraud.

OBAMA = ACORN = FANNIE MAE =SUBPRIME LOANS = WALL STREET COLLAPSE = VOTER FRAUD

There are too many suspicious people connected to Obama and the current crisis. Obama WILL DO ANYTHING, and SAY ANYTHING TO GET ELECTED!!!

In a minute one of those people he fired up will take shot at Obama or worse hurt some person in the crowd by accident and it will hit the news like a storm.Or Palin will say something off the cuff that insinuates it's ok to hurt Obama and the race will no longer be a race. They better get those crowds together they are looking more and more like some movies I saw in Mississippi Burning....just saying. I don't think it's a race issue but those people are looking mighty radical....

I really wish people would use some common sense and logic about this.

linda   October 10th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

John McCain's campaign is in a panic. As Americans have seen, when in crisis, McCain panics. To see that the only option open to McCain right now is negative attacks and personal attacks and smears against Obama shows that the McCain/Palin ticket lacks the vission and ideas that will restore the economy in these troubled times.

Mcain/Palin, same old politics, ideas that are old and tired and not suitable for Americas future.

Obama/Biden, '08.

I read a liberal's statement yesterday on this site...and I agree with it..."why should the truth about something be held back from being written, McCain supporters?"

Now, I ask the same question to liberals. Anything that is brought up against your "Messiah" that is in fact the truth, you scream "McCain's an angry old man". You honestly can't handle the truth, and continue to rely on the media bias to perpetuate your so-called cause. If you actually did research on Obama, you'd understand...but you won't!

They should share their cells with their loudmouth uneducated redneck supporters who should also be arrested for intention to commit hate crimes and violence.

What that campaign, that soiled brat shell of a man, and that retarded Alaskan women are doing is the most disgusting thing that I've ever had to witness since the Republican's turned their backs on poor Katrina victims.

Peace.

Bea   October 10th, 2008 12:35 pm ET

YOu know what amazes me, Obama worked on this baord with Republicans as well...this tells me that Obama does not go around looking for people's faults..he is willing to work with people who will offere themselves to a good cause. McCain on the other hand doesn't see the good..that probably why he left his first wife who patiently waited for him and then dumped her because she became disfigured. May God give her justice she deserves...

Lorenza- Dallas   October 10th, 2008 12:35 pm ET

John McCain seems to have lost his bearing. Desperation is not a good look for any presidential candidate. Some people just refuse to lose with dignity.

Charlie Bates   October 10th, 2008 12:35 pm ET

You'd think from listening to the McCain ads that Ayers was godfather to Obama's kids. Obama was a kid when Ayers was doing his thing. As an adult, they served on a couple of boards. NUMEROUS media outlets have researched the story and found the two were not close. End of story. Well, except if you're John McCain and fresh out of ideas of your own – except that government buying mortgage idea that your own faithful are trashing you on – and all you can do is swing blindly at your opponent. Is Karl Rove really running McCain's show as Rolling Stone suggests?

But what is more disturbing than the ads is the rallies, where McCain supporters are being encouraged to yell epithets, threats or treason and terrorism, and other frantic and angry outbursts.

John McCain and Sarah Palin, why are you trying to bring out the worst in people? Certainly that is not the kind of "leadership" you are trying to sell us?

I think this should open up talks about, Who is Sarah Palin? Lets hear more about her pregnant daughter (how is she doing?) Troppergate scandal, her religious beliefs etc. I dont know why Obama's campaign is not attacking her on these issues.

Race aside if you are an American and you love your country. You care about the future of this country, Obama is the better representative. We have to understand that we are living in a global economy, America's role as a leader has change.

Other countries have emerged as global players over the years, and they also want a piece of this sphere.

Regarding William Ayers, John McCain’s accusations against Sen. Obama and his questioning Obama’ judgment are pretty unbelievable, considering that Senator McCain actually had a rebuke from the senate for “Poor Judgment” (That’s a QUOTE, folks) in the Keating Five investigation by the Senate Ethics Committee. By any definition, the factual consequences and results of Obama’s relationship with Bill Ayers was helping raise funds for education as part of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge.

By contrast, the consequences of McCain’s relationship with Keating resulted in a $124.6 billion bill, which was directly paid for by the U.S. taxpayer. And let’s not forget Sarah Palin is currently under investigation back in Alaska for abuse of office as Governor. Yet these are the two pointing the fingers – pretty amazing McCain and Palin would even go there, considering their own problems with judgment and character.

What happened? We are in a new age, we are in a new time – the policies of Bush and the Republican party have FAILED!!! It is time for new leadership, new vision and a new start. Are they OK with their campaign events playing like a bonus scene from "Truimph of the Will"? Is the Secret Service investigating these people? If not, why not?

Beth from Virginia   October 10th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

Every new ad by McCain is worse than the one before it. Has any recent ad by the Republican candidate said ANYTHING about the issues? What about Palin's connections to the Alaskan Independence Party? These people are anti-American radicals and Palin's husband was a registered member of this group. Palin actually addressed this separatist group this year as Governor. Why is the media not covering this? This is a real connection. Obama was just serving on a Republican funded board with Ayers. Are all the Republicans who sat on that board suspects too? Why single out Obama? He was 8 years old when Ayers was a radical. Palin is friends with current radicals. Why isn't CNN talking about this? All they do is post the McCain talking points.

Peter (CA)   October 10th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Ambition??
No word describes Sen. McCain better. He still believes (and probably rightly so) that he should have won the Republican nomination in 2000 and that it was stolen from him.
This is it for him and the thought of losing this election to THAT ONE is tearing him up.
There can be no other explanation for a once honorable man running the dirtiest campaign ever (and given Bush's campaigns that is saying something).

Shame on you Sen. McCain. It's not too late to regain your soul.

David, Silver Spring, MD   October 10th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Who is John McCain? Born not in the U.S.A. but in Panama, future home of dictator Manuel Norriega. As a young man, McCain spent five and 1/2 years living with the North Vietnamese during a time of war. Given an opportunity to return to his own country, he refused. He says it didn't affect him, but how can we be sure? Has he ever been given complete psychological testing? How do we know he isn't secretly waiting to do Hanoi's bidding?

You see, Republicans, how silly this is? Try to stay focused on what's important and you'll see that the Obama / Biden ticket offers the best hope for our country.

Another important part of the party's platform is a demand that all federal lands in the state be "returned" to Alaska – a curious position, given that the U.S. government – and not Alaska settlers – bought the territory from Russia in 1867. The party in general advocates as little federal and government intrusion in people's lives as possible: no federal or state aid for schools, roads, hospitals, health care, social security, or farmers and the privatization of all government functions short of international diplomacy and defense. These positions put the party far to the right of Republicans like John McCain – or even our state representative Marty Seifert, who recently praised the "private-public partnership" that brought the new Regional Events Center to Marshall.

Clinton used the Fleetwood Mac song "Don't Stop" as his campaign theme in '92. I'd like to dedicate another Fleetwood Mac song to the GOP – it's called "Landslide".

I am so sick of John McCain. His campaign will surely go down as the most disengenious, the most negative, and the most scurryless in this country's history.

He has no shame...

Chipster   October 10th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

False claims are rampant and ACORN is the Republican attack du jour. Barack Obama was NOT a community organizer for ACORN. He was a community organizer for a group of community churches that established the Developing Communities Project (DCP) to encourage people in blue-collar, run-down communities to contribute their skills to improving their communities. He never worked for ACORN in any other capacity at all but merely represented them in a legal case many years ago.

Sen. Obama received an award for representing ACORN in a successful lawsuit, along with the U.S. Department of Justice, against the state of Illinois to force state compliance with a federal voting access law. Do your homework and you won't look like such fools for spreading false information.

These smears don't impress voters and actually expose the deceit and desperation of the McCain campaign. If you can't win with the truth, please pack up your slime machine and go home. This nonsense doesn't help one person pay for their health insurance, fill up their gas tank, or protect their retirement fund.

travis   October 10th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

I'm surprised John McCain's well crafted message of hate, fear, and lies is not resonating more with voters. It may have something to do with the fact that the economy is terrible, and McCain only offers to continue the same failed Bush policies that got us here in the first place.

The republican party is made up of a bunch of hypocrites, back stabbing, racist, who remind me of the American version of the Taliban.

Sunni   October 10th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Wow! How low the McCain/Palin ticket must stoop to win over voters with this nonsense! As a voter, I care about the issues concerning me, my family and our future....not this petty back and forth foolishness about something Ayers did some 40 years ago before I was even born! I care about the HERE and NOW....The future is what's at stake here...not the past!

Obama said he didn't know Ayers initially. Then he says they met at a party, but the terrorist attacks occurred when Obama was 8 years old. Now we find out that Obama and Ayers worked together for extended periods of time (even though Ayers is an unrepentant terrorist), and that Obama wrote the preface for one of Ayers books. Facts speak louder that words, Senator Obama. (By the way, the liberal policies you have supported in the past are far different than what you are proposing currently).

If the University of Chicago and 95% of the nation can move forward why is McCain & Palin trying to make something out of nothing.

McCain is ridiculous. Is he tryin to imply that sub-prime loans to minorities is what crashed this nation is garbage. The majority of Americans are not ethnic minorities..lol. Liberals are all of a sudden being blamed for deregulation – This comes after he just this year stated that he is for more de-regulation and his record in the senate is evidence of his stance.
Over the last few days of the McCain scampaign we have seen them stir the pot of HATRED and ANGER. They seem oblivious to the potentially dangerous ramifications of their approach. When members of their audience are shouting 'kill him' and calling him a 'Terrorist' is just sad.The fact that McCain condones this shows that he has no HONOR nor INTEGRITY.

Americans don't forget.. McCain''s Lobbyists aren't paid to lobby him on any issue that benefits you. Some of them are even paid by foreign countries/enterprise and their appointment represents a conflict of interest.

Don't know why it won't allow comments, but it is amazing in the story just before this one. McCain finally came up with a policy that made a little sense. Suspending the 70 1/2 forced withdrawl would be good and I think that President Obama should consider this(I am sure he will). It only took J Mc the entire campaign to come up with this. If you throw enough erratic ideas around eventually one makes sense. Congrats John, but that is not steady leadership.

Does McCain have a moral obligation to try to reign in his supporters a little or at least not to incite them? At recent rallies, people has shouted "terrorist", "off with his head", "kill him", and even turned on a camera man and shouted racial slurs.

This is the guy who promised a high minded campaign? This is the guy who said in 2000, that campaigns rely on personal attacks when the do not have any ideas for our country? Is his campaign honorable? Can he be considered honorable any longer? Why would anyone vote for a ticket that behaved in this manner?

I am tired of Obamas free ride through this whole vetting process.
Why should we not know about his hard drug use, why shouldn't we know about his record at school, what about how he paid for his drugs when he didn't have money. These are the things that need to be looked at before he is given the keys to the white house. What about his friendship with Ayers, they had to have had conversations and evidently Obama agreed with them. Answer any of these questions and you will know what kind of man Obama is.

PA voter   October 10th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

McCain should be careful using the word "ambition". McCain has a blind ambition to be President:

"I didn't decide to run for president to start a national crusade for the political forms I believed in or to run a campaign as if it were some grand act of patriotism. In truth, I wanted to be president because it had become my ambition to be president. I was sixty two years old when I made the decision, and I thought it was my one shot at the prize."

If McCain becomes President, his job will be done and he'll either be taking lots of naps or may possibly take more vacations than his buddy George W. Bush. So much "for the people"...

The economy is going into the crapper and McCain wants to argue about something that never happened. McCain's claim about Ayers and Obama is just a figment of McCain's imagination. He's desperate and he keeps throwing mud in hopes that something will stick. It appears that all McCain has going for him is that mud. It's sad, but what is even sadder is how many republicans agree with him, and what is even worse than that, are those nuts that that get into a frenzy when Palin spreads those lies.

What an utterly rediculous statement to be made- that congressional liberals favored the deregulation of wall street and the housing market. Take your lies and flush them Mr. McCain, or you will never see the white house. Americans are tired of clear lies, and we are smart enough to know that less regulation is desired by big business, and republicans seem to like to hop right into bed with big business...logic prevailing, we are compelled to the knowledge that this string of ads are not only lies, but a direct insult to the intelligence of the American People.

This is going down as the most 1-sided victory since 1984, and you have nobody to blame but yourself, McCain. How about instead of tying Obama to events that happened when he was a child you actally tell us how you are going to fix this country? I supported you over Bush in 2000, but I would never give you the time of day in 2008.

Second, all you right-wing evangelicals need to pick up your bibles and turn to the section on forgiveness. So what if Ayers was a member of Weather Underground? He made amends and is now working to make this country a better place by using diplomacy instead of violence. Doesn't he deserve forgiveness? Also, so what if Obama did marijuana and cocaine as a teenager. He learned from his mistake and is a better man for it. Doesn't he deserve forgiveness? There are no asterisks in the bible.

This is all over the internet:
——————————————————-
"Obama has been justly criticized for his ties to former Weather Underground member Bill Ayers, who in 1995 hosted a campaign event for Obama and in 2001 gave him a $200 contribution. The two have also served together on the board of a foundation. When their connection became known, McCain minced no words: "I think not only a repudiation but an apology for ever having anything to do with an unrepentant terrorist is due the American people."

What McCain didn't mention is that he has his own Bill Ayers—in the form of G. Gordon Liddy. Now a conservative radio talk show host, Liddy spent more than four years in prison for his role in the 1972 Watergate burglary. That was just one element of what Liddy did, and proposed to do, in a secret White House effort to subvert the Constitution. Far from repudiating him, McCain has embraced him.

How close are McCain and Liddy? At least as close as Obama and Ayers appear to be. In 1998, Liddy's home was the site of a McCain fundraiser. Over the years, he has made at least four contributions totaling $5,000 to the senator's campaigns—including $1,000 this year."

McCain is the one with bad judgment. He is the one that told us our economy was stable and then it bottomed out approximately 2 hours after his statement. As far as I am concerned, he is the one with "blind ambition". His campaign smear tactics are horrible and, by the way, are not working. I think questions should be raised about McCain's past and present. He and Palin continue their smear campaign as if their past and present are lily white, and we all know that is not true. Our country needs change not more of the same, and I believe that change will come with Obama.

Vincent, Great Lakes, Illinois   October 10th, 2008 12:28 pm ET

The mud-slinging innuendos have been the final straw for me, and the fact that Palin delivers many of them with a coy little smile reminds me of the “nasty girls” in high school who smiled as they stabbed people in the back laughing about them as they did it.

I am smart enough to research and see through the B.S. I want to focus on the issues that will affect me and my children’s future. I don’t need “homeland terrorist techniques” to try to swing my vote through fear mongering.about another candidate.

McCain should be ashamed of himself on how he has run this campaign. A true “hero” would rise against the fray and present himself accordingly. Taking the “high road” my friends, is Presidential, taking the “low road” is not.

Brigit   October 10th, 2008 12:28 pm ET

McSame has run out of bullets & is throwing the gun.

It is McSame that was supporting deregulation all along that helped get us into this mess, along with Bush policies, which he supported the majority of the time.

It is McSame that is blindly thrashing around in a rage, inciting his crowd, acting erratic, making personal attacks rather than address the issues. He has already acknowledged that if he focuses on the economy, he will lose, therefore, what else has he got? Caribou Barbie has already lost her appeal & people are seeing her for what she is...an unqualified pretty face.

He wants to make Obama seem oooooo, so scary. Oh please, let's get away from the fear mongering. We see where that has gotten us since the last election.

Derek from Louisiana   October 10th, 2008 12:28 pm ET

And I thought McCain couldn't go any lower. I also am amazed at McCain again not addressing Obama directly. Instead he sought to disrespect the whole Chicago, IL delegation and the constituencies of Chicago by saying, he would never seek the advice of a Chicago politician. NEWSFLASH DUMMY!!!! You're not running against the rest of Chicago. You're running against one man. Your math is still fuzzy. You seem like a fighter on the ropes. One punch. I'm convinced part of our economic issues are due to the war we couldn't afford. McCain let's not talk about judgment okay? I'm not convinced the surge worked. Could things have been on their way to stablizing anyway?

The judgment to send our young men and women to a war we should never have been in far outweights acquaintances.

If you really believed that Ayers is an issue why did you wait so long to bring it up? Judgment? It's not like we didn't all know about it. Senator McCain, your judgment became an issue with me when you made the decision to stand with Bush.

Blind ambition- McCain graduated from the Naval Academy because he was an admirals son. McCain crashed not one, not two, but three aircrafts (ask anyone in the armed forces whether or not a "regular soldier" would have lost their wings). McCain became the Navy's liasion to the Senate because of daddy. When McCain wanted to run for Senate his WIFE bought him a house in AZ. I don't even have to go down the Keating road.

Blind ambition? Look at the things Palin did to win the MAYOR'S race in AK. She painted her opponent as jewish because of his last name...claiming to be the only "Christian" running. The Alaskan Independence party was "Lucky" enough to have her speak at their event in 2008, and have her husband as a card carrying member. She's taken gifts, not reported the reimbursed money the AK government gave her for per diems, and cozied up to Senator Ted Stevens who is currently being prosecuted.

It just does not matter to me whether Obama has ties to Ayers or not. All politicians have ties to people they shouldn't. McCain has ties to Keating, Palin has ties to the separatist group. So which is the worst, Obama's tie to a Citizen of the Year, McCain's tie to a convicted criminal or Palin's tie to a group that hates the American government. It just doesn't matter. What does matter is who I think has the calm, rational judgement to lead our country out of the financial mess. So far, McCain's judgement seems to be lacking in all areas; how his campaign is run, his knee jerk reactions, his pick of VP. This continual bashing of the other candidate is turning me off entirely; this continuing inciting of his supporters makes him even more dangerous.

One car, one house, one spouse.
He didn't run around on his wife.
He didn't bomb innocent women and children.
The 'terrorist' whom he 'worked' with on a board thirty years after the events had received the Citizen of the Year award, a respected professor at a university whose 'terrorism' amounted to overzealous opposition to a war John McCain supported.
So how long do you refuse to work with someone who wants to do something good for the community?
And why has John McCain agreed to continue conversations with the likes of self avowed racists in the Senate?
This is just a distration

he's not honest–he's a liar–He can't answer real questions-he diverts to something else–he isn't upfront about his health –he's had skin cancer 4 x's – he's been against regulation until he has to change because deregulation which he loves has killed the U.S.

This is just plain silly. All politicians have big egos and it's funny how all the things McCain's campaign comes out with to throw at Obama can be applied, in some way, right back to McCain or Palin.

The only thing that I think might have traction is the developing Acorn voter fraud scandel. I don't think Obama is involved in any way but voter fraud is a very serious thing and it's making it difficult to register legitimate voters.

I've cast my ballot for Obama/Biden so I do hope they win..

CNN, why do you post McCain's lying ads, but will not post the article written in Salon that ties two Alaska Independence Party members to the launch of Sarah Palin's political career? This reminds me of the lead up to the Iraq war where the media was silent, knowing it was a bad idea. Is this your version of fair and balanced? Don't we, as your viewers have a right to know all the substantiated information out there so we can make the best decision possible? Or are your corporate owners tying your hands and making it not worth the risk to actually do your jobs? This is pathetic. And what did you do with Jack Cafferty. As soon as he called out Sarah Palin for her pathetic Couric interview, he disappeared.

Tyree in Virginia   October 10th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

Face it the hate and division tactics won't work, McCain this is not 1950-60 and the Jim Crow playbook is outdated. The GOP needs to get over this whole division thing and realize its not about race or religion. Its about coming together and lucky for us true Americans we have Obama-Biden here to bring us together as "One Nation Indivisible".

d.c.   October 10th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

The McCain campaign is so pathetic. You have to be a right wing fanatic with deep fanatic religious believes to vote for him. His supporters are really scaring me. I would not want to be part of that group. Being from Germany his fan base reminds me of the people that supported the NSDAP......Very scary. How can a man like McCain stand for this kind of a campaign.

Minneapolis Mikey   October 10th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

First off, I continue to be amazed that this once respectable Senator has continued to stoop to such childish and despicable tactics.

Second, how can McCain, who has abandoned many of his principals in order to run for President, lecture anyone about "blind ambition."

And third, why is ambition so bad? I want my President to be someone driven who wants it. I don't want him or her to compromise their morals or ethics (as McCain is doing with these ads), but I have no problem with someone having ambition and the drive to achieve his goals. I thought in America that was considered a virtue?

A Woman In California For Obama:   October 10th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

What has this got to do with my 401(k) plan?
What has this got to do with my paycheck?
What has this got to do with my job?
What has this got to do with my ability to take care of my family?

If your answer to all the above is NOTHING. Then what does that make John McCain?

Answer: The "waterboy" for the republican party.

Lesley   October 10th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

Congressional liberals fought against more regulation? That's rich coming from a guy who called himself the biggest deregulator a journalist could every interview. McCain can't even lead his own party. The House GOP didn't agree on the bailout bill until over one hundred million dollars in earmarks were added to it, costing millions of people to take large hits in their retirement and savings accounts while they waited it out that week. McCain is out of control at this point and he is demonstrating how he would act in times of crisis. Instead of offering sound solutions, he is trying to tie every problem we now face to some aspect of Obama. Instead of throwing mud at the wall and hoping it sticks, we need someone to clean up Washington. McCain only knows how to muddy the waters.

Jessica CA   October 10th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

Bravado in Boston   October 10th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

I can hardly wait until we can get some semblance of sanity back into the Country, and become a COUNTRY UNITED.

We lost sight of the fact that we are the UNITED STATES of America...and not just "AMERICA". All the horrible years of Bush reduced our "United" to simply....America.

Let's Unite. We are much stronger that way.

And as far as what we ALL were doing when we were eight or nine years old, well, it really doesn't matter. And what we have done to try to build up Community is admirable – regardless of who you are.

Mr. Obama was invovled in helping Community. This should NOT be derided as something trivial. Lastly, anyone who is engaged in Education reform and community will bump into Ayers. It can't be helped.

Mr. McCain, can you PLEASE get another diatribe? PLEASE?

Now can we all UNITE and become the USA again instead of plain ole' america? USA means UNITED! Shall we?

Paul   October 10th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

Both Obama and Ayers served on the Annenberg Foundation board. Isn't Mrs. Annenberg a major bundler, fundraiser for McCain? How come that is not brought up to the McCain campaign?
I would challenge anyone to find one person involved in the support of education in Chicago (especially involved with Annenberg) who doesn't know William Ayers.
Annenberg's widow just endorsed John McCain over the weekend. She thought Ayers was a stand up enough person to allow him to serve on the Annenberg board.
Does that make Annenberg a terrorist, too? And therefore John McCain is a terrorist as well??

Bad judgment? Who is the one with bad judgment? If the lies continue it will show that McCain is the one with the bad judgment. The United States is falling apart and all McCain can say is Obama has made bad judgment. McCain needs to do a back ground check on himself and see who has bad judgment.

Ronn   October 10th, 2008 12:23 pm ET

Desperate... McCain and Palin have little else to sell. When you see something like this you ask yourself, ..."if someone is so desperate to use trival antics like this, what makes them any different than Bush and Cheney". I voted for Bush...it was the worst mistake I ever made in supporting someone I believed in politics. I can't see myself voting for someone who will stoop so low to use anything to stay alive. Its worst than a baby rapist.

You've got to be kidding. McCain just needs to look in the mirror at himself and then his running mate if he wants to see blind ambition. McCain is so fixated on winning this election for his own edification that he sees nothing else.

Bruce   October 10th, 2008 12:23 pm ET

One important story that has been overlooked in the media is Sarah Palin's long relationship with the largest third party in her state, the Alaskan Independence Party. Sarah accompanied her husband to the party's convention in 1994, and although she never joined the party – she has been a registered Republican since 1982 – her husband, Todd Palin, was a member from 1995 to 2002. Governor Palin herself warmly greeted this year's Alaskan Independence Party convention, and has made no effort to disavow the party and its radical agenda.

Jay   October 10th, 2008 12:23 pm ET

Who is Sara Palin? Answer – long time Alaska Independence Party supporter. She spoke to the Party in 2007 and 2008 – and attended meetings with her husband – who unlike the other spouses has never been interviewed by even the Republican-friendly Fox News.

Blame the economy on Bush. Hate McCain. Hate Palin. Take Zero Responsibility for the your own actions. Don't point the finger where it belongs, CEO's and stupid people taking on house notes they can't afford. Forget that Barack Obama has a history of poor judgement. He is for off shore drilling now. He ran on a ticket of change and picked a 35 year insider for the VP. The banter on these blogs sounds like 100,000 Rosanne's on Bill Maher. Talk about out of touch. I'm tired of the Bush bashing. He's not running. Democrats have been in charge the last 2 years. Isn't there fault either. Bash me. Bash Bush. Bash McCain. Bash Palin. Pro Choic... Save the Whales? I'm not sure why you are continuing to cover the negative campaign McCain in running and not covering the fact that moderate and respected Republicans, like former Governor Milliken of Michigan, are no longer supporting McCain because of the tone of his campaign. The ads and speeches McCain and Palin are making is old news and don't warrant continuing coverage. The real news in the making is the fact that McCain is destroying his campaign and his legacy as a respectable political figure in the United States.
