Report: Palin abused power, violated ethics code in trooper case

Report: Palin ‘abused her power’
Report: Palin ‘abused her power’

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (CNN) – Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin abused her power as Alaska's governor and a violated state ethics law by trying to get her ex-brother-in-law fired from the state police, a state investigator's report concluded Friday.

"Governor Palin knowingly permitted a situation to continue where impermissible pressure was placed on several subordinates in order to advance a personal agenda," the report states.

Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan's refusal to fire State Trooper Mike Wooten from the state police force was "likely a contributing factor" to Monegan's July dismissal, but Palin had the authority as governor to sack him, the report by former Anchorage prosecutor Stephen Branchflower states. However, it states that her efforts to get Wooten fired broke a state ethics law that bars public officials from pursuing personal interest through official action.

Monegan has said he was fired in July after refusing pressure to sack Wooten, who had gone through an acrimonious divorce and custody battle with Palin's sister. Palin and her husband, Todd, have consistently denied any wrongdoing, describing Wooten as a "rogue trooper" who had threatened their family - allegations Branchflower discounted.

"I conclude that such claims of fear were not bona fide and were offered to provide cover for the Palins' real motivation: to get Trooper Wooten fired for personal family reasons," Branchflower wrote.

So she successfully graduated from the Dick Cheney school of power abuse. Wake up America, doesn't this abuse ring a bell? Can't wait to see the Republican spin on this one!

I am an independent voter, and anybody who is an independent voter needs to look at this very seriously. This is not something to take lightly. This is very scary. Speaking about Obama, his ties to people who he has a limited relationship with is not that important, is it? All week long we have been hearing about "We don't know Obama" or "he is untrustworthy", kinda makes you think real hard on which campaign is really trustworthy.

The GOP will try to make is seem the Democrats are somehow responsible for this. Which of course is not true due to to he fact that the board was a mixture of Dems and GOPs with the majority of the board being GOP's whom Gov Palin appointed herself.

McCain supporters, think long and hard about this. You have your reasons for supporting McCain and Palin, and I respect that but look at what has happened this week as well as the report that was just completed on Gov. Palin. This is not about you being a Republican, this is about you being an American, an American that will put its country first. The Democrats are not perfect either, but this is not Dems vs GOP, this is about what is best for our country.

I'm sure they will find a way to spin this, but it was a group with a Republican majority that read through the report and came out with this finding. A group that refused to be strong-armed by the current administration of Bush and Cheney to suppress it. Cindy McCain claimed that Senator Obama's campaign was the dirtiest ever–no, it's the McCain campaign that has been flinging the dirt. We have had eight years of suppression and bungling. Enough is enough. We need a fresh change and that will only come from Senator Obama. Senator McCain is actually getting pretty scary these days and his campaign seems to be bent on stirring up hatred. ENOUGH!

This only tells us what the majority of us have already concluded about the shallowness and hypocricy of this woman.

But the bigger lesson in this is what it confirms about McCain. How can he possibly defend his choice of Palin as having been fully and intelligently vetted and focused on putting the country first? If one could not do it before, one can see right through him now!

Wow... how funny for this to be spilled right before the elections. I hope the GOP has an offensive to this, because this certainly defeats their purpose of smashing Obama in their rallies.

Abuse of power, without breaking any real laws. Sounds an awful lot like Darth Cheney. No wonder she spends all her time dogging Obama instead of talking about the issues. I wonder how McCain is feeling about his trigger pick of a VP tonight. ;-(

This is no surprise. I hope that this wakes up the McCain-Palin supporters. We cannot go through having a leader who abuses their power again. Please vote for change.
