Report: Palin abused power, violated ethics code in trooper case

Report: Palin ‘abused her power’
Report: Palin ‘abused her power’

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (CNN) – Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin abused her power as Alaska's governor and a violated state ethics law by trying to get her ex-brother-in-law fired from the state police, a state investigator's report concluded Friday.

"Governor Palin knowingly permitted a situation to continue where impermissible pressure was placed on several subordinates in order to advance a personal agenda," the report states.

Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan's refusal to fire State Trooper Mike Wooten from the state police force was "likely a contributing factor" to Monegan's July dismissal, but Palin had the authority as governor to sack him, the report by former Anchorage prosecutor Stephen Branchflower states. However, it states that her efforts to get Wooten fired broke a state ethics law that bars public officials from pursuing personal interest through official action.

Monegan has said he was fired in July after refusing pressure to sack Wooten, who had gone through an acrimonious divorce and custody battle with Palin's sister. Palin and her husband, Todd, have consistently denied any wrongdoing, describing Wooten as a "rogue trooper" who had threatened their family - allegations Branchflower discounted.

"I conclude that such claims of fear were not bona fide and were offered to provide cover for the Palins' real motivation: to get Trooper Wooten fired for personal family reasons," Branchflower wrote.

Looks like its another nail in the republican coffin. Not only is Mccain and Palin ruining their own professional careers, but now they are destroying their own party.

They were right though, change is coming....for the better.

Palin will go down in history as the biggest political disaster in american history. And I am so happy she has done it all on her own too.

The RNC, McCain, and Palin will do nothing but lie and complain that it was a politically driven investigation, motivated by democrats, to discredit their candidate....

....and no one in this country with any amount of sense will (or should) buy it....

Finally! I've been waiting for this for a long time. But I have a strange feeling that her fans will just dismiss the findings as propaganda by Obama fans. It's sad but she has been held to separate set of standards from day one. She is such a Maverick.

Is anyone, other than a republican really surprised by this.

When you shout your innocence from the rooftops, then sue to have the investigation stopped, it's no surprise that this imbecile was found guilty/

So much for McCain's vetting of this fool!!

The McCain/Palin campaign showed how to abuse power by simply tyring to close down this investigation – it's a complete sham!
Of course she abused her power – but what are they going to do about it – NOTHING!
The woman, this campaign, this party just has no shame and no depths to which they won't stoop!
The big question is – WHO IS SARAH? Her ties to the AIP and her husbands should be brought to light – if anyone is a "traitor" it's this couple!!!

This is why it's not smart to declare you've been proven innocent before you're actually proven to be guilty.

I'd be more enraged at this "lawfully abused" garbage if Bush hadn't been shoving it in our faces for the past eight years.

At least we can all take our mind off the economy and watch the entertainment of this GOP "clown" campaign. These two (McCain and Palin) are getting alot of votes for being court jesters. How ridiculous is it to vote Repubtilian? You would have to be a hard core racist or sadist ....or a combination of the two.

Im absolutely frightened by some of the republicans behaviors. Even some of the supporters!! Time are rough, and we need a president who is a LEADER capable of bringing change, mccain will not bring change and has proved he cannot be a leader.

You though Mr. Cheny was bad! Think again.
This woman scares the hell out of me. Aren't we treated like school children in this election? How are we going to vote for her when she is not willing to appear infront of public media and tell us what she is capable of doing as vice president. No Meet the press, Face the nation, this week are meant to be tests before you get to washington.
If she thinks the whole media is in the thank to Obama and out to get her, she should atleast apear in NPR (Public radio and show us what she got) we are tired of vile propaganda. Obama pals with this or that is an old trick which may have a grave consequences.
I am disappointed to see my hero, John McCain come down this low. I know he is not that kind of individual but I am afraid he is hijacked by some right wind hate mongerers.
