Report: Palin abused power, violated ethics code in trooper case

Report: Palin ‘abused her power’
Report: Palin ‘abused her power’

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (CNN) – Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin abused her power as Alaska's governor and a violated state ethics law by trying to get her ex-brother-in-law fired from the state police, a state investigator's report concluded Friday.

"Governor Palin knowingly permitted a situation to continue where impermissible pressure was placed on several subordinates in order to advance a personal agenda," the report states.

Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan's refusal to fire State Trooper Mike Wooten from the state police force was "likely a contributing factor" to Monegan's July dismissal, but Palin had the authority as governor to sack him, the report by former Anchorage prosecutor Stephen Branchflower states. However, it states that her efforts to get Wooten fired broke a state ethics law that bars public officials from pursuing personal interest through official action.

Monegan has said he was fired in July after refusing pressure to sack Wooten, who had gone through an acrimonious divorce and custody battle with Palin's sister. Palin and her husband, Todd, have consistently denied any wrongdoing, describing Wooten as a "rogue trooper" who had threatened their family - allegations Branchflower discounted.

"I conclude that such claims of fear were not bona fide and were offered to provide cover for the Palins' real motivation: to get Trooper Wooten fired for personal family reasons," Branchflower wrote.

And McCain is stuck with her. Drop her from the ticket, he's diminished for not vetting her. Leave her on, he's diminished by her troubles and lack of qualitication for the job. What to do?

I AM VOTING FOR OBAMA/BIDEN TICKET, BECAUSE McCAIN/PALIN TICKET GIVES ME NO GOOD REASON TO VOTE FOR IT. McCAIN MADE IT EASY FOR ME TO MAKE MY CHOICE BY PROVING TO ME THAT HE HAS NO GOOD JUDGMENT. I WISH THAT HE PICKED GOV. MITT ROMNEY INSTEAD OF GOV. PALIM. IT IS A SHAME, BECAUSE HE WOULD HAVE HAD A PRETTY GOOD CHANCE AT WINNING THIS ONE. JOHN, AS MUCH AS I LIKE YOU, I THINK THAT YOU BLEW IT. THIS TIME AROUND, I AM GOING TO VOTE MY POCKETBOOK.

Judge orders Palin's Emails Be Preserved. Palin is a mess.

"We shouldn't be in a position where public records have been lost because the governor didn't do what every other state employee knows to do, which is to use an official, secure state e-mail account to conduct state business," McLeod said after the 90-minute hearing.

"It's a dereliction of the governor and her duties," she said

You mean this is the first politician to abuse their power?

maybe we should go to capital hill and look at the house and senate. I can GUARANTEE you will find ample amounts of abuse of power.

so don't stand on your high horses and look down your long noses at Palin. did she do wrong? yes she did. Alaska did not see fit to punish her so that is the states decision, not ours. Ofcourse most of you want to elect the man that will create new divisions of the federal government to oversee everything. Maybe we can just ask Obama to cancel all of the state laws and allow the federal government to help us all by ruling us as a collective unit.....hoorah for communism.

Okay, let's admit it and move on. Every polition has been involved in abuse of power or whatever she did. We need Palin in office so people can really see how smart she is and then she will be our first lady presidant. I just wish she was running with a younger candadate. She and George W would make the best team ever!!

This is no shocker for me, but I still don't think it will change many minds about McCain/Palin ticket. Don't get me wrong, I am Obama all of the way, but I think republicans will try and find a way to justify her behavior...just like they have been doing all along. Blaming the Dems. I have voted both ways in the past, but, there is no way I will EVER vote republican again! This election and the state of our economy have taught me a very valuable lesson.

    from the report
"Out of deference to her position no subpoena was issued for Governor Sarah Palin. However, she was requested to cooperate with the investigation by providing a sworn statement. She has not done so."

    go figure.

    Does this surprise anyone ?
Now, obviously, Palin has a major problem with her honesty.
But McCain has the bigger problem.
Did he pick her KNOWING that she was this dishonest – or did, after all his careful investigation, choose her WITHOUT knowing ?
In either case this speaks poorly for whatever choices a President McCain would make.
    WE CANNOT AFFORD McCain.
