Gov. Ted Strickland introduced Obama Friday in Ohio and offered tough criticism of the McCain-Palin ticket.

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (CNN) - Governor Ted Strickland told southern Ohio voters here that the McCain-Palin ticket and gone too far with its campaign tactics in an effort to keep the White House in Republican hands.

"I know Barack Obama. I think I know what's in his heart. He is bright he is capable he is mature he is steady we can trust Barack Obama," he said.

Watch: McCain's 'ignoring' the economic crisis Biden says

A native of the area, Strickland has traveled with Obama on his bus tour here, and offered testimonials in a region that would not automatically be considered friendly to Democrats. At the Friday morning rally on the county court house steps, the Ohio governor told the audience Obama was a "strong Christian family man" and to the gun owners and sportsmen he said they had "nothing to fear" when it came to their Second Amendment rights.

"Why do I share those two things with you this morning? Because the McCain-Palin campaign, and unfortunately some of their followers, would want you to be afraid of Barack Obama," he said. "They want you to believe that he is untested and unknown, and they are doing it my friends for one reason, they want to hold onto the power they have and to the positions that they want. This election is too important for us to be fooled by untruths and half-truths and smear tactics. They don't want us to focus on the fact that they have been in charge of the White House for eight long years."

Later, he added, "We are drawing a line in the sand in Chillicothe and southern Ohio."

Obama echoed Strickland's sentiments, although not as overtly. He continued to argue that the McCain campaign's "barrage of nasty insinuations and attacks" were a result of the Republican nominee's failed economic ideas.

"They can run misleading ads, they can pursue the politics of anything goes. It will not work. Not this time. I think that folks are looking for something different this time. It's easy to rile up a crowd, nothing's easier than riling up a crowd by stoking anger and division. But that's not what we need right now in the United States. The times are too serious," Obama said.

I have been a Democrat all my life but there was one time I did vote for a Republican presidential nominee. That was Ronald Reagan. And he turned out to be a very good leader.
Sometimes you just have to take a long hard look at the best person for the job regardless of party.
I think that it is time for some Republicans to make that choice. Look to the best leader, not the best basher of character.

McCain/Palin will win in November because this country just will not stomach an ultra liberal like Obama ,being supported by the liberal likes of Kerry and Kennedy (two other losers). Bill Clinton is as liberal as this country will elect and look what the Democrats did to Hillary. She was electable, but not left-wing crazy enough for the party big-wigs. These comments personally attacking the Republicans just show the low-lifes who are Democrats. This is from a former Democrat, now staunch REPUBLICAN!!!!

I smell a giant civil suit against Rush Limbaugh after the election. He wants to know when he and his followers can riot.I hope they lock him up.

The McCain/Palin team is the team of lies and fear tactics. These two have shown themselves not only to be liars but also despicable people deserving of America's repudiation and scorn.

John McCain is a shell of the man he may have once been. Today, without comment, he allowed a member of his rally to call Obama a "traitor". To quote Pope Boniface VIII, "Silence gives consent." By his silence and through his active lies, innuendoes and half-truths, McCain and all those involved in his campaign has proven themselves to be the true traitors to America and America's values. Shame on them all.

And while McCain flings mud, the Dow plummets. Reminds me of Marie Antoinette's "Let them eat cake." Hopefully an electoral guillotine awaits McCain and Palin on November 4th.

McSame is only hurting himself and bring his own party down with him. I cannot believe that the Republican Party is standing behind him and approve of his actions. I hope that come November the Democratic's replace evey Republican seat that is up for grabs, then they can thank John McSame, W and Miss Moose Barbie along with themselves for being such liers and for not putting this country first.

McCain has lost his honor in this campaign, which is the ugliest I have seen in my lifetime. That his supporters are chanting hate speech at their rallies should disturb anyone with memories of Klan activities or the Germans before WW2. Where is your coverage of this?

And CNN — come on. Let's see you give as much attention to the Alaska Independence Party issue as you have to the "Wiilam Ayers" so-called issue. Let's see you give more attention to McCain's lack of access to his medical records. Let's see you give more attention to Cindy McCain's failure to release her tax returns, particularly as she is now personally attacking Obama, something that I think is REALLY inappropriate for the spouse of a candidate to do.

Kris in Denver   October 10th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

All that McCain has left is the politics of division, hatred, lies and fear. Sorry, John, but I am not afraid.

All McCain and Palin can do is repeat RNC and Karl Rove talking points aimed at attacking Obama. They have no original ideas for solving any issue, only negatives to distract from their total lack of ability to be running anything. Also, why isn't the MSM reporting on McCain's alliance with the Oregon Citizens Alliance? WOW, talk about a modern day terrorist organization! McCain pals around with and condones these kinds of terrorist acts?

BK   October 10th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

Its hard to believe that McCain is still running ads based on something that has already been ~proven false~ by every major fact check and news organization in America. Its disgraceful. Its even more disgraceful that people believe him, it makes me loose faith in humanity.

Bill Stapp   October 10th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

The conservative Republicans have had eight years in the White House. In that time, the national debt has conservatively doubled to Ten Trillion Dollars. The size of government has conservatively expanded to the largest is has ever been. We have two wars going. We have unrestricted greed due to unregulated financial markets. Of the last eight years, the Republicans had majorities in the Congress ,too. But they kept spending and they didn't bother to solve the social security and other huge mandated costs looming ahead.

Frankly, as a conservative guy, I don't see how Bush/McCain can be considered anything but more liberal then Barack Obama. I will vote conservative this election. Change we can believe in. Obama is this conservative's choice.

Aaron Job   October 10th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

Everybody has almost forgotten the patriot and sober John McCain due to his current tactics . I m utterly dissapointed with his strategy . Talk about the economy please.

I couldn't possibly agree more. Whereas Obama and Biden rightfully base their attacks on ideas and voting record, Palin and McCain attack on a downright dirty personal level, trying to manufacture fear, division, and disunity. These angry, negative conservative Republicans are the same types who conducted witchhunts and burned opponebts at the stake in previous centuries. They are decidedly UN-American and are trying to usher in a new political Dark Ages here. They MUST be defeated!

McCain will try anything to win this election, 18 hours a day at Fox News is spent trying to tie Obama to Bill Ayers and ACORN. If you wanted to cast a doubt into the registration process at ACORN all the McCain camp would have to do is infiltrate his surrogates into the registration process at ACORN, register a bunch of bogus people ie: Terrell Owens, and than cry wolf against the democrats!!!

It's truly sad to see McCain disgrace himself and the Republican Party like this. He and Palin are even turning off Whites, Pro-lifers and Christians with their lies, that they continue to repeat.

McCain's honour and credibility are in such tatters that the Democrats hardly need to respond to McCain's charges. Give McCain a long leash …. he just seems intent on hanging himself with his disgraceful campaign!

McCain truly is a bitter, sad, stupid, small-minded, erratic shadow of the man that he once was.

It's so easy to blame Bush for the troubles this nation face today but it was the polices of Peolsi and Reed that create the mess. Having Obama along with far left congress and senate ought to finish off the nation.

And Obama still has a serious problem with who his friends are, now Rev Louise Farrahkan is praising Obama as our new Messiah.

McCain has no answers…he is the problem!!!

On a somewhat related note, while flipping through the channels last night, after the economic news continued to be dire, I came across a Republican talking head getting all worked up, seriously worked up, about the supposed conspiracy involved in an unflattering picture of Sarah Palin. I watched it momentarily, feeling like I was gawking at a bad accident on the side of the road. She said something like "as a woman, anyone would be mad to have such an unflattering picture."

The world going to hell in a handbasket and your energies are devoted to VANITY. Lord help us . . . There are no words to express how vile and absurd this has become

The GOP wants to keep the same broken record rhetoric that the Clinton gambled on and failed. Fact is people don't care about such trivial matters. Voter registration disputes, serving on the board of a non-profit charity that benefits children with Ayers, and getting a discount by selling part of property to Rezko, Rev. Wright are non-starters. All this stuff has are cycled via the news headlines enough already.

And did not republican won 2000 and 2004 for doing same.

April from SC   October 10th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

I'm glad that the media and the American people know exactly what the McCain campaign is doing and that we are NOT GOING FOR IT!!! Saying Barack "Hussein" Obama and that he hangs out with "terrorists" is just their attempt at trying to make him seem foriegn. Even though I am a Democrat I once had respect for John McCain and what he went through when he was a P.O.W for our country, but now he is acting like a desperate, mean old man. He really needs to think about what kind of legacy he wants to leave at this point. How will he explain these acts that his campaign is pulling to his grandkids? When you look at Barack Obama's rallies compared to John McCain's which one looks like America to you?

James   October 10th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

to dave:

"The American people, democrat and republican, are tired of lying politicians. "

You say we're tired of lying politicians, and I agree. I don't agree though, in the one you're talking about. It's Mccain that's lying. Just look at the number of items on factcheck.org and count the lies. The numbers are astounding. It's like 30-1 Mccain. Take of the blinders and LOOK at who's doing the lying, and who's talking issues.

Justin   October 10th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Palin is a disgrace, and even McCain seems to be realizing it. They've kept her so far under wraps, it's surprising she can keep that tan going.

McCain has dug himself a huge hole by backing Bush's economic policies of tax-cuts-for-the-wealthy and unwise de-regulation even when they've so obviously failed.

Since it's too late to re-cast himself as a man of the people, McCain takes the last road available to him - smear, smear, smear.

Now he's campaigning like Bush, too - tactics he's always said he opposed. Sad.

tired of delusional blind sheep   October 10th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

the republican party leaders are sabotaging the mccain campaign… they dont like him, dont like the fact that he was voted for by the people in their party, so they are destroying his campaign from the inside. they would rather someone else win and take control for the next four years instead of letting the self proclaimed maverick win the presidency.. it is quite sad to see the corporate bigwigs play such a sad old man…. tsk tsk tsk…. they know they cant beat obama this time around, so they are settling for 2012.

that has to be the only explanation for mccains actions.. maybe he should start listening to his adulteress heart.. it has gotten him alot further than him listening to other republicans

Michael   October 10th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

What gets me in all this is that Sen. McCain refuses to truthfully talk about the issues facing this country. He wouls rather try to smear Sen. Obama, frather than talk about the solutions we need to right this ship.

This doesn't sound like Country First to ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Global J   October 10th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

That would be putting it VERY mildly.
Shame on McCain and six pack Sarah for their gutter politics.
The good news is they are going to lose big time because of this.

I just LOST over 30% in my 401k. I am sick. Do you think I would trust my money with Mccain and dizzy Palin? I cannot believe these people. They incite hatred at their rallies which look like a klu klux klan conventions. NO minorities in the audience. It is really scary! Now they have the audacity to try and blame the poor people for the financial mess and foreclosures. I can believe people are still running around with Mccain stickers and signs because they LOOK like them. News flash Mccain owns 11homes / 13 cars. Last time I checked Most white, black and latin people don't own this much. It is amazing how racism can be used to seperate people. Meanwhile the thieves just keep on stealing.

Dan Ahrens West plains, Missouri   October 10th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Why is it that if Obama has such a lead in the so called polls, that he needs to cheat with voter fraud through ACORN? I could have bought into the Ayers thing, if that was the only one, but when you step back and look at the big picture. you have Ayers, Rev. Wright, Rezko, Daley, and ACORN. It doesn't look good for Obama. I would have probably voted Democrat this time, but not now. I want someone in the White House that is willing to tell the truth and admit his mistakes. Not another "It depends on what the meaning of IS, IS" president that we have to impeach, to get to the truth.

True_Obama   October 10th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Is Obama very truthful, experienced and qualified to be commander-in-chief in a dangerous world? Do we know him well, his background, job-resume, records and past achievements, or all talk and empty promises, playing with our anxiety and fears? He reminds me of Jimmy Carter, of big spending, big government and higher taxes. Who is the real Barack Obama, please come out of the closet, and do not hide behind Joe Biden?? Should it be Biden/Obama instead of Obama/Biden??? Maybe Bill Maher is right when he supports Barack Obama (?)

Obama lies to. Remember the "shame on you" line from Hillary. His ad made it appear she claimed NAFTA was "a boon" when in fact that quote came from a newspaper article that retracted their characterization long before Obama's ad was out. And speaking of NAFTA, remember he changed his position (to what he was secretly telling the Canadian officials) AFTER he won the primary. He has lied and misrepresented McCain's statement of "100 years" which did not mean 100 years of war, but being their for 100 years. We've been in Japan and Germany since WWII and that's been over 60 years. I will agree with Obama however when he said the republicans failed economic ideas….mainly the idea of trying to change the democrats' regulation on Fannie Mae, the same regulation that got us into this mess. The GOP failed because the Dems wanted to give everybody a loan whether they could afford it or not.

Matt   October 10th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

It is about time that people in the media, politics and other wise start speaking out against the lies that have been, and continue to be spread by this campaign. It is dirty politics. They can't win by debating the issues and presenting a plan for the future, so they try and win by fear mongering and lies, like George W. did. Frankly, I, like everyone else have had enough of this. I had enough in 2004 when the Bush campaign smeared a war hero, in Kerry, when neither Bush nor Cheney (5 draft deferments) had any comparable military service. I find it unbelievable that they are launching these swift boat attacks when McCain (Keating 5) and Palin (currently under investigation) have no room to talk.

PS. Liz for Hillary Clinton-Your obviously not a democratic and were never for Hillary if you plan on voting for McCain, two completly different messages between the two candidates. Sorry, your not fooling anyone.

Bruce   October 10th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Both Obama and Ayers served on the Annenberg Foundation board. Isn't Mrs. Annenberg a major bundler, with Annenberg) who doesn't know William Ayers.
Annenberg's widow just endorsed John McCain over the weekend. She thought Ayers was a stand up enough person to allow him to serve on the Annenberg board.
Does that make Annenberg a terrorist, too? And therefore John McCain is a terrorist as well??
Obama and Ayers served together on the Anberg Foundation as in Walter Anberg a righty supporter and as I understand a good friend of Ronald Reagans.

McCain said today about winning elections that he has fooled em before and he will fool em again.
Barry Goldwater was right, John Sydney McCain is a carpetbagger. He used distraction to cause the delay in the congress and stir up the far right that cost Americans a trillion dollars. He did a similar tactic to look like a "Maverick when he used misdirection to avoid the S and L crisis.
He cried a sigh of relief when that Arizona Republic reporter was blown up in his car. Why is that Sydney? We always gave you the sympathy vote in Arizona John Sydney McCain but now with all your hate and lies, We won't be fooled again. This time John Sydney McCain you're the fool and an old fool at that.

They instill the fear because that's what terrorists do. Most of the Republicans couldn't figure that one out though. Nose is too high in the air or the white sheets covering their ears.

TT   October 10th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

We're beginning to see what John McCain is really like:
he enjoys hasty, hi-risk decisions (picking Palin, avoiding 1st debate)
he has difficulty shaking hands with a black man, or calling him by his first name or looking him in the eye;
he's indecisive and ill-informed about economic policy;
and now he's desperate enough to try anything to win.

Does this sound like a president you'd want to elect?

Truely Engaged   October 10th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

I've never seen the Republican party stoop so low. Everyone who has even half of a brain knows all candidates (except Palin) has been thoroughly vetted for their presidential/VP nominations. This includes Obama, McCain, and Biden. They've been thoroughly vetted before being elected as senators. Only a complete MORON would before entertain all of these scare tactics used by the Republican party. I know about:
Obama - Affiliations with Ayers
McCain - Affliations with G.Gordon Liddy
Obama - ACORN connection
McCain- Keating 5 connection
Obama - Jeremiah Wright
McCain - Stance on hanging the confederate flag outside of Washington
Obama - Tony Rezko
McCain - US Council of World Freedom ( gathering place, a forum, a point of contact for extremists, racists and anti-Semites)

Will it ever end? I'm voting for Obama. The Ivy League graduate, president of Harvard Law Reviews, Civil Rights Attorney, Senator of Illinois - Sponsor of over 130+ bills with two becoming law. Magna Cum Laude graduate with a Juris Doctorate. A guy whose campaign outlines the troubles of the country, and whose diatribe outlines his theory on fixing it.

Go Obama/Biden 08′

Winnie in Montana   October 10th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

And as far as this ACORN stuff goes, don't blame Sen. Obama.

It is NOT the Senator's fault that Americans today are feeling so desperate for change that some will go to these lenghts to secure that change. On the flip side, there are reports of voter registration lists being purged of non-Republicans. Again, these are extremely polarized times with people on both ends of the spectrum desperate to get their party elected.

Bruce   October 10th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

One important story that has been overlooked in the media is Sarah Palin's long relationship with the largest third party in her state, the Alaskan Independence Party. Sarah accompanied her husband to the party's convention in 1994, and although she never joined the party - she has been a registered Republican since 1982 - her husband, Todd Palin, was a member from 1995 to 2002. Governor Palin herself warmly greeted this year's Alaskan Independence Party convention, and has made no effort to disavow the party and its radical agenda

Kelly   October 10th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Palin is a liar. She is a disgrace to the office of the president.

She and McCain would sell out their own mothers to get into the oval office.

Their brand of neocon republicanism is nothing like the GOP of years ago. They embrace xenophobia while wrapping themselves in the flag.

Nationalism tinged with fear, loathing and racism that hates the intelligent of this nation.

Sounds a heck of a lot like fascism to me.

I do not want a "hot-head" leading this country. Some folks call John McCain a maverick, I call him an "angry man without a head." He is scary and so is Sarah Palin.

I can't imagine Sarah Palin with her hand on the button determining whether the US should launch a missle………..she doesn't have the brains. It sounds to me that she has a mental problem that is not easily curable. If she is elected Vice President, the US will have to bear snickers and laughter at just how stupid we were to elect someone whose only foreign experience is that she can see Russia from her house. What a bunch of bullsh-t and the joke will be on us!

Nifty 60, female and white   October 10th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

I am so saddened that it is even possible for the McWack/Pain campaign to be able to make all those allegations and even worse rally people up into potential violence. I am so afraid that as time to the election draws nearer these people will become more dangerous as they become desperate. I beg of everyone to be vigilant, watch where they distroy or burn Obama signs, open your ears to threats. We can not allow these people to win.

Oh Please   October 10th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Liz, you need to get over Hillary, she lost. ACORN is probably just like any other agency, they get paid per registration and somebody in the organization got greedy and started registering whoever. ACORN is not Obama.com, be fair, they are not one in the same. The Obama campaign who is run by Axelrod, a very honest and decent man used ACORN in the primaries, NOT the general election, and they are probably feeling like their money was defrauded. What do you think they want phony registrations? GIVE ME A BREAK . Voter fraud in this Country has ALWAYS turned on racism, people being disinfranchised, and even killed for voting, American History please read it. DO NOT TRY TO FLIP THE SCRIPT!!!! If ACORN IS GUILTY, then they shiould give the Obama Campaign back their money.

I know that the republicans are so frustrated right now. They must be asking themselves, WHY ISN'T THIS WORKING?!? Why aren't people afraid of this Black man? Why aren't my attacks against his character persuading people to not vote for him? Why won't people believe my lies? (I have repeated them often enough) Why aren't their more people hating with me?

No weapon formed against him shall prosper…IT JUST WON'T WORK!

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequity of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who shepherds the weak through valley of darkness, for he is truly his brothers keeper and the finder of lost men. And we will vote against thee with great vengence and furious anger THOSE WHO ATTEMPT TO DESTROY MY BROTHER. And you will know the will of the electorate when we lay our vengence upon thee.

Obama has a severe problem with his ability with being able to judge other people around him. ( Wright, Ayers, Pflugger, Rezko). How can we as a nation expect him to read the actions of world leaders when he cant even read the people around him. This guy is either real dirty or just real naive and neither is a good quality for a president. Make the safe vote of McCain to help save this nation.

Susan, California   October 10th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Thank you Govenor Strickland. The outright lies and smear campaign brought on by McCain/Palin is outrageous. How dare they utter the words "Country First." Country First would be to take his defeat, if that is what is to be, like a man and the maverick he claims to be gracefully, instead of further dividing and destroying this Country he claims to love.

Acorn is not the problem…Since Acorn is a Rublican and Democratic organization. Go ask how much Mccain gave to Acorn and you will see that they worked for Bush in 2004

Looking Forward   October 10th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

Okay here is what gets me……Palin/McCain does so well at expecting people to change their vote due to Obama's "history". Like they are so squeaky clean. Anyone in their right mind can look at Obama and see he is an honest person. To spew hatred and violence in this day and age only says one thing about a person…and that is not someone or something I would want in the White House. Please people…..be honest with yourselves…McCain won't survive 2 years in office and that would leave us with President Palin. That isn't good for American in any way, shape, or form. I would rather not to vote, than to vote for the Republican ticket.

Obama/Biden all the way.

Folks, Sen Obama forewarned about these smear tactics — go to HuffingtonPost.com/Politics and see video from MO in Jul 08!
IMHO – Anyone voting for a Republican – House, Senate or Presidential ticket – is just as corrupt and cowardly as they are for their refusal to OWN THEIR FAILURE. Don’t get me wrong, I believe most Democrats share in this failure for lacking the courage and conviction to at least challenge the President and Republicans when it mattered – 2002-2004. However, let’s not forget who has failed to show smart, honest and stately leadership during this very crucial time and over the past 7+ years – George W. Bush (& Cheney)! The BUCK STOPS AT THE TOP! Let’s also not forget that all of these Repubs who are trying to separate themselves from Bush now, to include John S. McCain III, voted with him lock, stock and barrel from 2001-2006 on all issues that have had a real and significant impact on the American public, specifically, and the World in general. Furthermore, the Republicans, specifically “the base,” have the audacity to be MAD at someone other than themselves … these folks are so much in denial … go figure! America, do NOT allow them to divert attention away from their responsibility for getting our nation into the mess we are in today. No escape goats allowed this time — Republicans, OWN YOUR FAILURE and LOSE with what little DIGNITY you may have left!

unfortunately there are people who beleive the crap that is being spread about Barack. If they had've listened to his speech at the DNC, he stated that he is not against people having the right to bear arms. He simply wants to make sure guns dont end up in the wrong arms killing innocent people and cleaning streets from gangs who have access to firearms. I love this man, and its hard to see other people hate him because of the color of his skin. He is not going full throttle at Mccain and I respect that but for them to try to make people see him as somone evil is just disrespectful. He has a loving family and I pray his goodness will lead him to the White House.

Republicans are desperate. They cannot win on the issues, so now they've resorted to the FUD factor. In fact, they've gone beyond that. They have sown hatred and contempt. The last time I checked, those were not family values; those were not Christian values.

John McCain his corrupt VP, his pill popping adultress wife, the Lobbyist running his campaign and his lynch mob cult like followers have seemed to have lost it since John has fallen so dramatically in the polls.McCain has lost all integrity, all honor in this election and he has proven himself unfit to lead. but most troubling are the crazed crowds that feed off of the ignorance and hate from the McCain clan…who needs terrorist with Americans like them?

Pay attention to the LAST Paragraph ——————

Obama has been justly criticized for his ties to former Weather Underground member Bill Ayers, who in 1995 hosted a campaign event for Obama and in 2001 gave him a $200 contribution. The two have also served together on the board of a foundation. When their connection became known, McCain minced no words: "I think not only a repudiation but an apology for ever having anything to do with an unrepentant terrorist is due the American people."

What McCain didn't mention is that he has his own Bill Ayers—in the form of G. Gordon Liddy. Now a conservative radio talk show host, Liddy spent more than four years in prison for his role in the 1972 Watergate burglary. That was just one element of what Liddy did, and proposed to do, in a secret White House effort to subvert the Constitution. Far from repudiating him, McCain has embraced him.

How close are McCain and Liddy? At least as close as Obama and Ayers appear to be. In 1998, Liddy's home was the site of a McCain fundraiser. Over the years, he has made at least four contributions totaling $5,000 to the senator's campaigns—including $1,000 this year.

Last November, McCain went on his radio show. Liddy greeted him as "an old friend," and McCain sounded like one. "I'm proud of you, I'm proud of your family," he gushed. "It's always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great."

The race baiting and angry mob stoking of the recent McCain/Palin campaign is new low in American politics. John McCain is a man I have admired and would have at one time voted for. The recent tenor of his campaign and his failure to control the more virulent members of his rally audiences have turned me off of supporting him. Is big government and ugly win at any cost the new Republican Party? If so, count me out.

Dawn Pittsburgh PA   October 10th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

I can not belief that all the republicans call themselfs Christians and then incite racial violence at their rallies! This country will never never come together after McCains behavior! If McCain/Palin wins I hope that in 4 years the republicans throw them under the bus too! Guess what all you that think if McCain wins so Hilliary can win in 2012 don't worry the damage of McCain/Palin will already be done! Plus Hilliary will need Obama supporters to win! I watch the McCain/Palin ticket rallies and I hear people screaming terrorist and kill him! The real scary this is that there are people out there who believe all this nonsense. At times the McCain campaign is turning into a violent mob!! If this doesn't stop McCain could have bitten off more than he could chew. If nothing else, this is the evidence to prove to anyone that McCain has blind ambition and will do anything to have the power he wants! Why in the world would someone trust him to run a country, I wouldn't trust that man in my home.

Honestly, McCain is starting to scare me and his angry mob as well.

johnrj08   October 10th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

At their rallies, the McCain/Palin ticket will even incite their more zealous followers to scream violent threats against Obama then say nothing to get these maniacs under control. The gross irresponsibility of the McCain/Palin ticket has been an astonishing thing to watch over the last two weeks. Even McCain's wife is showing her teeth. This is still the United States of America and somebody needs to remind these people that we are all in this mess together.

When Obama and Biden are the Prez. & VP, they should right away start enacting some sort of rules or codes for political campaigns that would forbid maliscious manipulation with people, the way Republicans are currently doing it. I mean their trying to manipulate with people's patriotic feelings and, what's worse, trying to appeal to the lowest in people - hatred, distrust, prejudice, ingnorance. It is discusting.

Do you know who Obama is? NO! Obama is a socialist/marxist and that claim is easily proven if you people would just do your homework. Obama was the lawyer for ACORN(yes, that vote getting fraud in the tank for Obama group that has turned in registrations for the dead), forcing Citigroup to give bad loans. Yes, Obama was in the forefront of this financial collapse-he is one of those to blame. Along with Barney Frank and Chriss Dodd and Maxine Waters and the rest of the Democrats who blocked for years contol of Freddie and Fannie. Are you better off than you were 2 years ago when the Dems took over? Obama is.Google Obama and Saul Alinsky, Obama and ACORN, and check out what he really did as a community organizer. Obama needs to be exposed for what he is. He wasn't 8 years old when he was on a board with Ayers, He wasn't 8 years old when he lauchned his campaign, out of Ayers living room. He wasn't 8 years old when he paid ACORN nearly 1 million dollars to register people. Now there are 75 thousand fraudulant absentee's. Obama is a crook just like the rest of his friends, and CNN NEEDS TO LET THE PEOPLE KNOW THE TRUTH. THERE ARE 12 STATES WITH FRAUDULANT ABSENTEES, THAT'S THE WAY OBAMA WORKS.iF HE CAN'T WIN LEGALALLY, HE WILL FIND ANOTHER WAY, AND HE HAS. Obama / Biden know that they do not have to use these types of tactics in order to win, they can do that on their own merit. Ask yourself, who would benefit from "voter fraud" , then ask yourself, who would not.

Obama has used "the rules" throughout his political career, why would he change that now? Sounds like the GOP just sunk to a new level.

I miss Jack Cafferty to. My prayers goes out to him and his family. McCain has really lower himself to a new level. I believe that Palin is more of a curse than a blessing to his ticket. McCain never took the low road in his campaign until he put Palin on his ticket. I guesse that what happens when you meet somebody only once in your life, you don't know what to expect.

Juanito, Seattle   October 10th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

It doesn't matter what Gov. Strickland says about Obama, if he only "thinks" he knows his heart, then he's only gambling that he really does know his heart. He apparently isn't looking at this man's past, such as it is, and as usual, going along party lines. Because I personally have done tons of research on Obama, even though he may have a large following, my vote is for Sen. McCain. Obama is running solely on the shredded coattails of Pres. Bush, and that is why "lifelong" democrats are looking for change. Well change is coming. Only the politico will not. The next president inherits a world of uncertainty and the simple truth is that I don't see that either McCain or Obama will be able to resolve many of the problems within the next 4 years. But given I have but 1 vote, it will go to McCain.

Pat D   October 10th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

When Obama is President, let me know how all of you feel about Ayers, Acorn and Reverend Wright.

Brian   October 10th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Regarding William Ayers, John McCain’s accusations against Sen. Obama and his questioning Obama’ judgment are pretty unbelievable, considering that Senator McCain actually had a rebuke from the senate for “Poor Judgment” (That’s a QUOTE, folks) in the Keating Five investigation by the Senate Ethics Committee. By any definition, the factual consequences and results of Obama’s relationship with Bill Ayers was helping raise funds for education as part of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge.

By contrast, the consequences of McCain’s relationship with Keating resulted in a $124.6 billion bill, which was directly paid for by the U.S. taxpayer. And let’s not forget Sarah Palin is currently under investigation back in Alaska for abuse of office as Governor. Yet these are the two pointing the fingers – pretty amazing McCain and Palin would even go there, considering their own problems with judgment and character.

RealityKing   October 10th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

Appranently the Democratic governor of Ohio isn't too concerned about the obvious voter faud thats going on in his state…, at least not this time.

Peter (CA)   October 10th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

Dave—no he didn't.
The lies are coming from McCain/Palin. Obama is not perfect, none of us ever said he was. But he is by far the better candidate.

Don't be surprised when ACORN does not produce what you want it to. It's been investigated before. Right now, it's only right wingers like Michele Malkin and The National Review that want to make something out of it.

How about putting Country above party or is that just a sign for a convention?

Karl Adams   October 10th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

Obama is the one presidential candidate that is truly putting "Country First." McCain and Palin just prove more everytime they open their mouths that they are prepared to say anything and do anything to win…regardless of what the Nation needs right now. Obama is calling ALL Americans to pull together to deal with the crises we face. McCain/Palin are all about dividing and conquering for purely political purposes.

Friend of Obama   October 10th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

Just like Obama said this morning, we want someone who would LEAD this country, not DIVIDE. McCain/Palin should be ashamed of themselves for inciting the crowd to scream the unthinkable. Palin need to travel through the US and realize that the days for white America are over. This country is now made up of various types of ethnic groups, and last time I checked - we are all Americans. To have someone shout "Treason" or "Kill Him" and not addess is evidence that you both do not deserve to win this election.

GO OBAMA/BIDEN

Governor Strickland is correct, we have all the trouble that we need. If Senator McCain can not campaign on issues and avoid personal attacks based on false rumors and race bating, he must be desperate indeed . The way that his campaign is going and the events of this last few weeks, he would have reason to feel desperate.

Patricia   October 10th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

I find it very sad the lengths the McCain ticket has gone in this campaign. I had a lot of respect for the Senator as a former POW, etc, but this is no longer the John McCain we know. He could not stand people like Karl Rove and all the others back when he ran in 2000. These are the same people that railroaded against him and made a mockery out of him in favor of Pres. Bush. He sold his soul to them this time around. I think he was forced into the Palin VP pick in order to pick up the base. They both invoke religion as a badge of honor, but the campaign they are running is not Christian, nor would God approve. Divisiveness is not the way to go. Obama is an American through and through and he definitely is the one who puts "Country First." It concerns me as well, because they, the McCain campaign do not speak up and tell those that shout out despicable words to calm down and not do that. One of those people could conceivably make their way to an Obama stop and take action in their hands. Maybe that is what they are hoping for. It is insulting and despicable behavior from a man who's legacy is tarnishing every minute.

Stephee LeAnn   October 10th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

Obama is absolutely right. We really have no time playing "blame games" and "gossips" on one another when the economy is at its worse. I'm glad there are many people out there who have enough common sense, as Obama, to really start thinking of the important issues.

McCain just doesn't see that. All he sees is "more bad talk to get more people to vote for me." The same probably goes to Palin, yet who knows what she thinks. I can't understand half of what she says anyways. My apologies in being rude, but really…..this is crazy.

It is pretty much obvious that the McCain bus has gone down the ditch. He is so erratic even the Republicans are worried. His base now is left to ignorant racists who would vote for Shanjaya (with all due respect) if he were the nominee.

Even if you don’t like the democratic philosophy, its pretty much obvious that Obama is the only sane candidate who can put our country back on the right track, and it will require all of us working TOGETHER to do it.

For McCain to try to divide the country at this trying time tell you much about his priorities for the country.

Scare tactics are not the way to gain the confidence and trust of American citizens.
Perhaps Obama was remiss in using he word "Change" in his platform- the word invokes fear and defensiveness in small-minded individuals and history shows that ignorance and intolerance are enemies of change.

I'm frankly disgusted with John McCain's mudslinging and lies. John McCain has received a total of $190,000 from Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac executives and employees; Obama, about $160,000. McCain only reported Obama's support among employees of the two firms, while McCain's support from executives of the two agencies exceeded Obama's support from both sources, employees and executives. I'm repeating this because you failed to post my first offering.

All you right wing shills who post these lies about Acorn, completely ignore the case being brought against 6 state governments for illegally removing tens of thousands of names from the voter rolls.
How convenient.
What I find interesting, and what the Repugs always fail to mention, is that the Democrats are always accused of trying to ADD voters to the polls, and Repugs are only interested in REMOVING them! That tells me all I need to know.

I believe that palin and mccain are trying to get obama knocked off. They are basically sending messages to the kooks to take aim at obama and take him out.

akamai   October 10th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Thank Mr. Strickland!

Dennis from CA   October 10th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Wait. I know that my 401k went down the toilet thanks to policies McCain and President Bush have supported. My 2 college degree tells me that McCain's mortgage proposal and 401k proposal that came out this morning are disastrous. McCain keeps bringing up Obama's character but unfortunately he is taking the low road himself (not to mention his running mate's seccessionist past… some judgment there…). Now you are telling me that I should vote for McLame because he is more trustworthy of Obama? C'mon now Mac… Wake up… Your advisors have served in the same board with Obama and Ayers, and in fact one of your advisors owned that board. I am sick of this negative campaigning and as an independent "That One" got my vote this year. I will not stand and watch you lower yourself even more McCain.

carole   October 10th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

If we are to question Obama's love of American then surely we need to question Sarah Palin and her husband's significant activity and many connections to a fringe political party in Alaska, the Alaskan Independant Party. Both Palins attended two conventions for the radical party, which has called for a revote on Alaska's statehood and a draft constitution for an independent Republic of Alaska.
Does she really love American? Fair question considering her questions regarding Obama, eh?

On the Home Stretch   October 10th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

McCain and Pailin are trying to win support by putting fear, hatred and anxiety into our minds, because they don't actually have a platform or proposal for the future of our country. All they can do is whine and tear down the other side with lies and fear-mongering. They are afraid to address the real issues we care about, in an intelligent way. The GOP is totally divided and rudderless, so all they can do is serve up mud.

Well, It's time to vote for the candidates with the positvive agenda and realistic ideas about solving the huge problems we face as a country - first of all our economy (in a rut because of bank de-regulation that was supported by McCain), health care, education and security. Do I want a clear set of intelligent proposals, backed by smart people who know how to solve problems, or a pair of ranting ideologues with fear and lies as the only planks in their campaign? GOP, move over, you've had your turn and look where we are. Don't know about you, but I'm ready to vote!

Yasriel   October 10th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

Have you checked your 401K today?
I Just checked mine and I have lost 30% from its all time high.

No Way, No How, No McCain/Palin

iyke in spain   October 10th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

Obama sets his plans and deliver them properly. I see Obama more organized and focused than McCain. McCain´s only attacking and not proferring solutions to the current crisis America is facing.

Brandon from Ohio   October 10th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

Just waiting for this crap to be over. Hopefully Palin will be voted out at her next re-election and we'll never see or hear from her again, and hopefully McLiar will lose his seat in the Senate now that the people of Arizona see what an absolute clown he is.

Amy Q   October 10th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

McCain Palin aren't just trying to get people to fear that Obama is not ready (as if Palin has had tons of experience up there in 'betcha Alaska') they want to bring up the underlying and unspoken fear of a black man running the country. It's sad, it's pathetic and it's beyond desperate. My question is, if Obama had taken after his mother's side and had white skin, would McAlin even be able to try to play on that fear? No. So once again it just shows that the Conservatives are shallow and look at surface and are too lazy to look beyond.

Obama-Biden 08 - because this country needs to move forward not hang on the the past with a man with dementia!

tulsa   October 10th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

Dave, I saw the AC-360. I think you've got a pretty bad slant on that.

Let's also look as hard at the McCain and Palin ticket. And at the RNC's voter intimidation tactics.

Fair is fair.

MCCAIN 08   October 10th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

HEY DEMS AND BIAS CNN. LETS TALK ABOUT OBAMA AND ACORN.TRY AND GET OUT OF THIS ONE OBAMA. COME ON CNN TALK ABOUT.

I'm from this part of Ohio. Our governor is a great guy, a church minister, a local, and Democrat, and people trust him. Obama is considered genuine just like Governor Strickland. I see hope in Ohio in November, not hate. Ohio will be blue (but we can't say "go blue" since that's a Michigan phrase!).

Dick in Sioux Falls   October 10th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

Why has Obama not shared the information brought to light by FactCheck.org that John McCain has far exceeded the contributions from Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac than Obama has received.
McCain only shares the contributions from employees of the two lending agencies. When contributions from Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac executives, John McCain's total from those two sources totals more than $190,000; Barack Obama's about $160,000.
Why has the so-called liberal press not called McCain to account about his misrepresentations of the truth concerning total support from Freddy Mac and Fannie May?

Hugh B   October 10th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

Change is no more an option, it's a necessity. For the good of the US AND America, Obama is the only answer.

If the truth were known, there are probably republican fingerprints all over those acorn forms.

Willow, Iowa   October 10th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

Doesn't there have to be some kind of honesty in campaigning? Can McCain and Palin say just anything they want and not get in trouble for lying? I must say I am amazed at the things they are saying over and over, without any fear.

As for Ayers, this is old news. It was new news last February, but old news now. I am sure McCain does not want to bring up Wright, because then everybody will bring up Hagee and parsley. Tit for tat. Let's start discussing AIP and some of McCain's hooligans, such as Liddy, etc.

Republican Woman for ThatOne'08   October 10th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

Dave, Anderson Cooper said that? That's funny since I watch him every night I haven't once heard him say that? I guess the supporters are just like the candidate, they lie also!

NC TWAIN   October 10th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

This action by Obama exemplifies one word…. "Leadership". McCain now exemplifies one word too ….."Eratic

Ashu   October 10th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

McCain character is the only thing being hurt in the process.
There purpose to attack Obama is clearly not working.
I hope in this month the false hoods that are being presented clear up and open eyes. This is the time for change not repetitive history.

Boston Bean   October 10th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

The McCain / Palin campaign have shown their true colors—win at any cost, say anything, do anything……for instance ….Take over the govenment in Alaska and try to suppress the Troopergate issue regarding Sarah Palin.
OBAMA has explained his relationship with all of the people McCain is talking about.

I want to know when "WILL THE REAL JOHN MCCAIN STAND UP"?

sabuc for Obama   October 10th, 2008 1:11 pm ET

Tell 'em Ted!!

Agree with California Gold. McCain is committing character suicide!! McCain need to step up to the late and present his ideas and plans and let us decide who the better candidate is. Stop with the foolish tactics and man up and face defeat like a true man!

Mike   October 10th, 2008 1:11 pm ET

I have taken a look in the Fox News comment areas. Those Fox fans need some serious convincing over there. It's sad to see how twisted their opinions are.

Corey Gabriel   October 10th, 2008 1:11 pm ET

From some of the comments posted on these various news items on CNN, it is unfortunately noticeable that the lies and hate McCain/Palin are spewing are being believed by the less educated and ignorant…the low information voter. This is exactly the type of person McCain/Palin are hoping to influence and sway with their lies, distortions and BS. Its too bad that in these troubled and crisis ridden times, that some people will be fooled and taken in by McCain/Palin who have put their own election before the good of the Country. Hopefully, the more intelligent, informed voters will prevail and save this Country from the absolute disaster that would follow the election of McCain/Palin…..they are clearly negative dividers, not uniters.
