Palin booed at NHL game in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CNN) – Although many Philadelphia Flyers fans cheered and clapped as Sarah Palin took to the ice at the Wachovia Center on Saturday night to drop the ceremonial puck kicking off this town's NHL season, their warm reception was no match for the 90 seconds of sustained booing that rumbled through the arena, drowning out most of the cheers in support of the Republican vice presidential nominee.

As Palin stepped onto the ice before a capacity crowd to drop the puck, joined by her daughters Willow and Piper, the arena's jumbotron flashed a futile message to the thousands of notoriously harsh Philadelphia sports fans in attendance.

"Flyers fans, show Philadelphia's class and welcome America's #1 hockey mom, Sarah Palin," the massive electronic message board pleaded, to little effect. Booing quickly erupted when the smiling candidate emerged from a tunnel leading onto the ice, muffling the applause of any Palin supporters in the crowd.

Some in the audience simply gave her a thumbs down gesture. Others called her names.

Palin spent about a minute and a half on center ice, posing for pictures with Flyers captain Mike Richards and New York Rangers assistant captain Scotty Gomez, an Alaska native. The crowd commotion was sustained for her entire time in the rink.

Palin's showing did not appear to help the Flyers, who looked hapless in the first period, giving up four goals to their rivals from New York. The governor stayed to watch the first two periods with family and staff in the box of Flyers owner Ed Snider, and by the time she departed the Wachovia Center for her hotel, the Flyers had narrowed the lead to 4-2.

You know, I have as little regard for Sarah Palin as anyone but, for the sake of her children, I think the fans in the building could have shown a little consideration.

    THis is dissappointing.

Seems about right. She's been shielded from the public for these past five weeks and now we know why; the public thinks she's unfit and so does McCain.

Sounds about right. Dirtiest politician ever. Most people seem to realize it and don't want to applaud it. I'd be booing as well if I were there.

  8. EVERYWOMAN !!!!

I UNDERSTAND THE BOOING, I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN PALIN'S BEHAVIOR FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS.

1.) SHE IS THE SECOND WOMAN ON THE TICKET AS VP, AND THIS IS SERIOUS BUSINESS!!! NOT TIME TO PLAY GAMES AND START HATRED OUT THERE.

2.) SHE ACCEPTED THIS POSITION KNOWING THAT SHE DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH EXP TO DO THE JOB.

3.) SHE HAS BEEN CAUGHT IN SO MANY LIES AND DO NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR HER ACTIONS.

WOMEN HAVE TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY AND WE NEED ONLY STRONG WOMEN LIKE HILLARY TO REPRESENT US. MEDIOCRE OR A PRETTY FACE JUST WON'T DO!!!!

ANOTHER THING I SAID THIS BEFORE IF AMERICA DON'T GET HERSELF TOGETHER SHE WILL BE FIGHTING A WAR OF HER OWN AND SHE CANNOT AFFORD THAT!!!!!!!!!

Thank goodness that most of the country is seeing this gimmick pick for what she is. She is an insult to intelligent women. It would seem that the shameless Republican brand is at its end. No one wants these preachy, hypocritical and mean-spiritied people in charge of our great country any longer.

I really wish Palin would stop using her children as political props. I feel terrible for Piper to have to endure that booing. And it can't be good for the teenager's self-esteem. The hockey mom should have known before hand that hockey fans-especially in Philly-can be rowdy and boo everything! But yet she chose to bring her young child as a 'booing shield'. Think about it, the baby is at almost every rally and non of them are in school! Most average Americans go to school when they're 7 and a teenager. I guess Sarah Palin's kids are special in some way.

Wow, that must be a horrible feeling to be booed and yelled at like that. I wonder if she will remember that the next time she starts inciting her "fans" to start yelling racial epithets, and things like Obama is a "terrorist" or "traitor". You betcha she wont!

Well these Reps instigate hatred in their rallies. The redneck old geaser saying that Obama was an Arab shows how these Republicans are so IGNORANT it is not even funny. It is really scary that year after year goes by and America still is the laughing stock of the world because of things like these. Democrats are not perfect but Repubs are so ignorant it pisses me off.

People vote for the candidate with the best proposal to solve the economy, war and capture Osama and impriove national security. Jesus America wake up, it is not cute anymore!!!! Palin deserved the booing, see how it feels.

  17. non hockey fan who votes

Guess someone figured it was another safe location for a Palin PR event, except sports fans come from all sorts of backgrounds and don't all see everything the same way.

I'm really interested to see how they play this one off, sure they'll find some way to blame the media for not reporting about all of the supporters who cheered her on!
