McCain says he'll 'whip' Obama's 'you-know-what' at debate

McCain predicted a win at Wednesday’s debate.
McCain predicted a win at Wednesday’s debate.

(CNN) - John McCain predicted Sunday he would beat Barack Obama at the final presidential debate this week.

"After I whip his you-know-what in this debate, we're going to be going out 24/7," the Republican nominee told volunteers at his campaign headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, sparking laughter and applause from the group. McCain immediately added: "I want to emphasize again, I respect Senator Obama. We will conduct a respectful race, and we will make sure that everybody else does, too."

Outside the doors of his campaign offices, McCain is fighting to hold on to the traditionally-red state. McCain talked Sunday about the tough fight for Virginia, where Obama currently leads by four points, 49 to 45, in the state's most recent CNN poll of polls. He also pointed to battlegrounds states like Ohio - which Sarah Palin visited Sunday - and Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, and Pennsylvania.

"And I'm telling you, we're coming on and we're going to work 24/7 for the next - who's counting - 22 days," he said.

McCain acknowledged the dip in his poll numbers since the financial crisis began, but said overall trends were in his favor. "...I'd like to give you a little straight talk, we're a couple points down, ok,
nationally, but we're right in this game," he said. "The economy has hurt us a little bit in the last week or two, but in the last few days we've seen it come back up because they want experience, and they want knowledge and they want vision. And we'll give that to America, and I know that we're going to win this race."

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

I find funny he's making a prediction like this when he said the same thing about the Last two Debates and he lost then!

Typical of the republican fear and smear tactics. We need to get the fact out that McCain is STILL friends with G Gordon Liddy (of watergate fame) who spent time in prison and was subverting our very Constitution even way back then.

We are sick of the republican/Rove tactics – we're sick of McCain and Palin lying over and over and over.

I mute the tv or switch channels when either of them is on

John McCain is the worst. Here he is talking about how the economy hurt his poll points but how he could help improve the economy. He only cares about himself. How can anyone not see it?

I would not put anything past this hatemonger! I have feeling that McCain is going to get downright nasty at this debate and Obama better be prepared for it (I know he will be). McCain is desparate and he is like a wild cat backed into a corner. He will scratch at anything!

I'm sorry, but this isn't fun any more.

Senator McCain should be happy that he has the respect of Americans because of his POW status and his mostly patriotic time in the Senate. For him to continue campaigning in this manor demeans him and his family, meaning his father and grandfather. I hope his mother isn't aware of what her son is doing to the family's reputation.

Senator McCain has earned a relaxing retirement in the Arizona sun. Let's hope that America and Arizona give him this reward for service to his country.

I don't think McCain can see straight – he'll probably miss the "You know what by a mile" He lacks the intelligence to come up with a plan that will meet with any success. He probably is bringing up an old plan from Bush and is changing a couple of words. He seems to lack the vocabulary to write anything original.
    OBAMA/BIDEN all the way.

Yes, in the length of time that they have sown seeds of hate and fear, they have shown a little bit of momentum. Thanks to the media's constant reporting of things like ACORN and repeating every negative thing Palin says over and over again like it is the best news available.

Obama is winning... not with fear mongering... but with the issues! How about covering his campaign. It's as though McCain is the underdog, so we have to bolster his back side!!!

McCain has lost his grip on reality. What has become very clear is that he has no options to win this election. He has made bad choice after bad choice and has allowed detached amateurish advisers to steer his right, then left then forward then back. He is making a case against himself. Obama's strategy should be to stand back and allow McCain to self destruct.

I don't think McCain has what it takes to be president. I believe he will lead us on down the drain. He told lies in the last debate. Will this debate be more lies? Read the facts. If I were campaigning, I would be very truthful. Washington needs a big makeover. The ones in need to be voted out. We definitely need change and McCain isn't offering us anything more than Bush has. Everybody needs to wake up and smell the roses. Vote the oldies out!

I'd like to know when Mr. McCain intends to start running a "respectful race" because he hasn't done that so far and I think he ought to watch what he says because of the negative connotations, though he hasn't seemed to care so far. He might want to spend some time considering the ethics of the race he's running. I think this candidate and his running mate are wrong for the times and wrong for the White House.

Do we even need another debate, to see who is the best candidate? These debates are so predictable; McCain will try to say something snarky and witty and then Obama just proves how absurd the statment, which makes McCain looks about 2 inches tall. Please, no more debates, because I am tired of seeing Obama having a battle of wits with an unarmed man.

Yeah, Senator. They want vision. That would be why Obama is winning in every single battle ground state you listed–even though I've never seen New Mexico referred to as a battleground state. I almost feel bad for the man–I'm sure he's a good person at heart but his campaign is just monstrous, and Sarah Palin is so hateful and divisive. At this point it's not the election, but his legacy and honor that are at stake.

I agree we want knowledge and vision but not the type of experience McCain has demonstrated. I glad, going forward, he says he wants to run a respectful campaign, but both his ads and the speeches of his VP choice show this is either clearly not true ,or, he is a good leader even over his own campaign.

However, McCain is attempting to use Bush's "cowboy" mentality and that ain't gonna work either. He lies every chance he gets and all he can say in terms of policy is "I know what it takes to turn the economy around and I'll do it if I'm President." Well, John McCain, why don't you just go ahead and tell us exactly what you're going to do?

As an observer of this campaign, I have to say John McCain's disrespect of his opponent is thoroughly distressing to watch. Not only does it demean McCain, it demeans America, American politics and America's politicians. McCain is doing irreparable harm to America's image and, of course, to his own chances of being elected, which have already been diminished by his choice of running mate.

What is it that makes McCain choose language like "After I whip his you-know-what"!! I have never come across anything quite as unbecoming!

  63. Big D

How can anyone consider McCain to have a Presidential temperment? He's too impulsive, and bounces from tactic to tactic without an overall strategy, and is willing to give up his integrity to take the low-road with smear attack ads. He picked a VP candidate without vetting her, and without truly considering the consequences. Obama has shown again and again that he's steady and has the strength and the temperment to be President.

John McCain never provides specifics about anything. "Americans can fix this". "I can find Bin Laden, I know how to find him. I'll get him". and now, I'll beat Obama. When he speaks like this, he never has to provide any logical reaslns, or evidence.
But the talk does not make it true.
He won't look Obama in the eye, and waits until after the debate to accuse Obama of the most heinous things. No wonder he doesn't want to tallk with his enemies ... he can't.

All I can say is McCain better be ready to justify his illegal ties to ciminals over the years, Gordon Liddy is one that comes to mind. I would not have chosen the word "whip". Not good. McCain needs to give up and go home. His health will not hold out through a presidency, and that is dangerous for the whole world. The desire to be president should not be put before Country. John's motto needs to be "White House First".

America loves you John, but we don't want you to be our next president. We just can't take another 4 years of failed Bushenomics, nor do we want to see you die in office and let Sarah run the country. She's a dingbat!

Senator McCain, please stop the trash talk. Haven't you and Sarah Palin caused enough trouble? Don't worry about whipping Senator Obama ( and please tell us you are not thinking in slave master terms), just tell your side honestly and be straightforward. Let the American public make up its mind without the hysterics. Try to hold onto some shred of your dignity.

  88. No McCain/Palin

I want a man with honesty, intelligence, and someone who realizes that everyone does not make five million a year. McCains experience hasn't gotten us anywhere.....where is Osama....if he knows how to catch him. Why are we still in Iraq ...if he knows how to win wars. Why is the economy such a mess....if he knows how to fix it. McCains experience doesn't count for much, not if Bush was his primary teacher. As for Palin...she isn't worth my time.

What a way for the could-be next President of the United States to talk – it is obvious that McCain has been hanging around with Palin and picking up on her trash talk. I will be so glad when this campaign is over – with hopefully Obama in the White House! I did not find McCain so terribly objectionable until he added Palin to the ticket – and now everytime I see/hear McCain, I think about Palin and just about get sick!!! I cannot believe that it is even a remote possibility that Palin could get into the White House in any position – much less in a position that could one day lead to the Presidency! What must the rest of the world think about us – with Palin now in a leadership role!!!

Bring it on, old man, bring it on!!

The only way that you even have a chance to beat Obama is if you come up with something (ANYTHING!) at the debate that states you know how to fix our economy and this is the plan. Since you obviously have no plan, you will lose in November.

McCain we want you to tell us DURING the DEBATE about your VP pick regarding her ABUSE OF POWER and Compliance with the code of ethics……A legislative investigation has concluded that Gov. Sarah Palin abused her power in pushing for the firing of an Alaska state trooper who was once married to her sister, or by failing to prevent her husband Todd from doing so. The report says Palin failed to reign in her husband's inappropriate efforts to use the governor's office to contact trooper employees in his attempts to have Wooten fired.

John McCain has come from behind after numerous setbacks along the way and is still going strong, I feel he will pull ahead once again in spite of Acorn and the economy. I am impressed to see educated Americans putting the race card in the closet where it belongs and judging both candidates on their ability to lead the country.

Well see about that! When the Clintons cover the swing states with Biden and the debate is over on Wednesday night..... we'll see. McCain is still going to have to deal with fallout from the "troopergate" investigation and it's results, the fact that his wife maintained a investment relationship with Charles Keating for 11 years after the McCain investigation, his ties with David Ifshin, a dissent, and his ties with Wall Street bankers and lobbyists. McCain is nothing more than another George "king" Bush and in fact, worse! He has traded whatever honor he once had for the gutter in this political race.

On his statement of "I'm going to whip his you-know-what",,,,,McCain doesn't stand a chance. It's obvious to the majority of Americans that McCain doesn't even know his head from a hole in the ground. And if he actually does, he should simply stick his head in the hole and go away.

I'm sure glad this thing is almost over. The lies and filth that McCain and his arm candy Palin are smearing around is simply discusting.

Well, McCain still won't have to look Obama in the eye if he's focused on his you-know-what! I wonder if McCain will actually address the issues or if he'll have the nerve to repeat the lies his campaign has used in Palin's appearances. Maybe he'll try to tell us again about the bridge to nowhere. He surely won't talk about health care, the economy, education, energy, or the environment. In that battle of wits, McCain is unarmed.

I'm a bit confused by McCain's comment in the last paragraph, "The economy has hurt us a little bit in the last week or two, but in the last few days we've seen it come back up because they want experience, and they want knowledge and they want vision." Never mind that he still 'doesn't get it ' about the economy, "The economy has hurt us a little bit in the last week or two,... A little bit, please?

Now to my confusion, who exactly is "they" as in, "they want experience, and they want knowledge and they want vision." His sentence starts by talking about the "little hurt" Americans have suffered over the last few weeks with the biggest financial meltdown since 1929 and he is telling us that "in the last few days we've seen it come back up because they want experience, and they want knowledge and they want vision." Who are they and what do they have to do with the economy coming back up in the last few days????

If anyone has an idea of what John McCain is talking about in the last paragraph, please post it.

if one likes the Bush policies hire John McCain.
I was appalled that McCain picked Palin the most unqualified person to be Veep.
And the job they handed her was to be an attack dog. And give a list of attack subjects that she had no knowledge on.
And told her lying was ok. In Iowa here I have not found a single person, Republican or Democrat who thinks she has anything going for her. The names they use to describe her almost fit a porn star,
I guess we are not big city folk out here. One Republican said "if McCain wins and dies and we ger her our country is doomed"
Pretty scary but he said she knows nothing about the WORLD. She would be worse than Roosevelt waas at Yalata when Russia took advantage of a sick man.

I don’t much agree with many of John McCain’s political stands or the tactics his election campaign are using. But a good idea is a good idea, regardless of who it comes from. McCain’s “suspend the rules for 401/ira withdrawals” idea is a good one. Many people (over 70.5 y.o.) wait until the last moment to make their annual, mandatory withdrawal. This year, waiting till the last moment might be the worst moment. Many people will take much larger than normal losses. Who knew February was as good as it was going to get? The idea is simple, FREE, and all it really does is waive extra taxes and penalties to the account owner. This is truly a bipartisan moment. Obama should endorse this.

Four years ago I was ready to support this man. I thought he would be better than George Bush. Now I'm not so sure that would have been the case. And considering how BAD George Bush has turned out, that's kind of a scary though.

And McCain has become almost scary in some of his incoherent statements. I really question if he's starting to experience dementia. He looks & acts bitter & angry all the time. He makes wild statements. And he picked that nitwit Palin for his running mate. I don't think we can afford the risk of having this man in office.

Clearly McPalin have lost their bearings. McCain critisizes Obama for declaring what he will do in Pakistan – "you don't say that do you?, you simply do what needs to be done", and now here he tells his opponent four days ahead that "I am going to whip you in a debate". After this McPalin call Obama double standards. Whom are you fooling folks.

Well, you definitely have experience in crashing plains. As for knowledge and vision, they only need to look at opponent "OBAMA" the only one that has given knowledge and and definitely vision. If your rallies have been any indicator of your vision for America, you can keep it. The rest of us sensible people don't want that kind of division. It's time to come together. I hat to break it to those that do have racial issues, but the financial crisis doesn't discriminate.

Neither McCain or Obama, can change the course of the United States.America, is a failed state, a state that failed due to a greedy American Public that thinks they are above the world! However, I do think McCain, has a bit better understanding on world affairs and economics than Obama. Americans, continue to love their sorry useless so called democracy, funny! Every American and every U.S. president and Congress/Senate are to blame for the mess. You people cant save 1 cent? Why? No America-2008...

Where are you on this issues. All you seem to do day in and day out is pronce on Obama. Whats your game plan if you cannot beat him on the issues then you go deep in the gutter. Bad news, old man. The idea is to LOWER debate expectations. If you say you're going to kick Obama's butt, and you don't deliver - which seems likely after two mediocre performances already - then you're going to look like you lost the debate.

I hope they listen to you, John. You have taken the risks, proposed ideas, Obama has just sat back and found faults while proposing nothing. You suspended your campaign and went back to your job to help end the financial crisis, the job of a Senator, and the job of the next President. Of course you should have done so. Obama found fault with your doing your job.. We know fault finding is idiot's work. This is all Obama has offered.

Empty rhetoric that you are in fact George Bush (idiotic thing to say). He's for CHANGE. Surrendering America to terrorists would be CHANGE, but is it really the change we need? It's amazing Obama has gotten as far as he has on the emptiness of his message. I hope the thinking people in America show up to vote.

I am an independent voter and not a party loyalist. I have voted for republicans most of my voting years, including John McCain (I was raised in southern Az). I served with the United States Marine Corps as an infantry officer with two tours in Iraq. I SHOULD be voting for John McCain...but I'm not. He has shown poor leadership and lack of integrity as can be seen by most of the articles here on the ticker, but that's not the reason I'm not voting for him. HE VOTED AGAINST US when he refused to support Sen. Webb's (Vietnam war era Marine infantry officer) GI Bill, a bill that Sen. Obama/Sen. Biden were co-sponsors of. He caved to anti-immigrant groups, when anyone who has served in a combat unit can tell you that immigrants fight for us with more ferocity than any hate-spewing conservative coward. No, I am not conservative, I am not liberal, I am an AMERICAN PATRIOT, and like so many of my fellow veterans, I support Sen. Obama. Not because he is the anti-Bush, but because he is a leader with vision, vision for healtcare, vision for intelligent foreign policy, vision for domestic economic strength, and vision for strengthening our military, vision that the GOP sadly does not offer. We have fought for your right to vote America, don't waste it.

Sen McCain sounds as if he is still in high school at a pep rally geting ready to play a football game Wednesday night. These debates are not about who wins and and does not win. These debates need to be reconfigured so that they have value to our country. I would hope our next President does not look at every challenge as if they all have winners and losers. My concern with Sen McCain the winners/losers mindset is a part of his hard wiring. We will need a President who will try to find a way to obtain common ground.

Mc Lame is so out of touch he will probably think he won after he looses. I hope that Palin has the ware with all to break the news to him but she is so busy trying to recruit lynch mobs that she will have to be told as well. Regarding her beef against Obama, how can you hate someone so much that you never met. That lunacy! Not sound judgement at all. Obama came to her defense first by telling his supporters to leave her family out of the campaign and he has never attacked her personally, but she has been non stop inciting hatred against him. In her desparation, she is more like a Nazi with lipstick. This country is really in for trouble if mccain is elected and keels over in office God forbid. Who will tell her what to do if she becomes president? I bet not one of their voters can honestly in good faith say that she would make a good president or VP because they don't what the job requires, but common sense should tell them that it requires more than her credentials. I think from a judgement perspective that Obama would be better suited to be commander in chief. We don't need any mavericks or loose cannons in the oval office, we had 8 years of that experience....

Get the facts right, Palin! Obama was speaking in the context of sex education and not abortion.

You are irresponsible and reckless. You have no character, no integrity, are unable to open your mouth without lying and have lost the trust of the American people. Your one attempt to calm one angry person was ridiculous – especially with Palin out calling Obama a terrorist again today. You are a hypocrite and a very dangerous man. I have had just about all I can take from Sarah Palin. She's a liar and is willing to do just about anything to get her way, which is very dangerous. I watch alot of politics on TV and listened to a discussion about her future in politics and was shocked to hear that she actually might still have a career. After getting to no her thus far, I have to question her ability remain govenor at this point. I am just so unimpressed with her and McCain because I believe that they have sunk to an all time low, inciting hatred and anger at these rallies. I have completely loss respect for McCain, I am a veteran and I do not think he cares about us at all. He's a fake. Bottom line, they just need to state there differences, argue over whose is better but never promote hatred in the pursuit of division.

Palin/McCain view of a respectful campaign: "We understand how important it is that this team be elected. For one thing, we know who the bad guys are, OK?” That statement elicited scattered shouts of “Obama!” throughout the crowd. “We know that in the war, it’s terrorists, terrorists who hate America and her allies and would seek to destroy us, and the bad guys are those who would support and sympathize with the terrorists,” she said. “They do not like America because of what we stand for... Those who sympathize and support those terrorists who would seek to destroy all that it is that we value, those are the bad guys, OK?”
