Obama did not ask to delay security agreement, Iraqi FM says

The Iraqi foreign minister weighed in Sunday on a stateside campaign trail controversy.
The Iraqi foreign minister weighed in Sunday on a stateside campaign trail controversy.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) – Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama did not urge Iraqi officials to delay a decision on a security agreement with the United States, Iraq's foreign minister told CNN on Sunday.

The statement by Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari refutes a recent published report and a statement by Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin that Obama tried to influence Iraqi politicians negotiating with the United States to score political points.

Fact Check: What did Obama tell the Iraqis?

Obama "never, ever discouraged us not to sign the agreement," Zebari said. "I think this was misrepresented, and I have clarified this case in a number of interviews back in the United States recently."

The Washington Times reported Friday that in June, Obama told Iraqi leaders in Baghdad that an agreement between the United States and the leaders to allow U.S. troops to stay in the country after 2008 should not go into effect unless it had congressional approval.

The newspaper quoted Samir Sumaidaie, the Iraqi ambassador to the United States, about a June 16 telephone conversation between Zebari and Obama.

But the article did not contain a comment from Zebari.

The campaign of Obama's Republican rival, Sen. John McCain, argued that Obama's call interfered with U.S. efforts to reach a "status of forces agreement" with the Iraqi government. The United States and Iraq have yet to announce an agreement despite numerous reports that one was near.

During a Friday fund-raiser in Madeira, Ohio, Palin said Obama tried to influence the negotiations "in a way that would set back America's cause there, while advancing his campaign here."

Palin will say ANYTHING to win. She is a LIAR. So, it doesn't surprise me to hear from the Iraqi foreign minister that Obama did not ask the country to delay on a security agreement.

Palin – go back to Alaska. You are not wanted in the White House.

Palin just shoots off at the mouth with false allegations! You wonder why her negatives are so high? How about you focus on fixing the economy insteading of throwing the kitchen sink at Obama. I am so sick of this - wish the election was over already!

I'm not a violent person, but I'm starting to wish someone would staple Palin's mouth shut.

The palin/mccain camp is making the US look like fools. Before the media write anything the palin/mccain camp says. They should double check it, to keep them (the media) from looking uncreditable.

It is amazing to me why anyone would want palin in office, after she has been found guilty abusing her powers in Alaska. Imagine if she gets in office how she and todd would fire everyone that disagrees with them. The first to go would be mccain and the second will be the supreme court justices who are in favor of Roe vs Wade

We knew the truth. Palin probably knows this as well, but she has no moral code that prompts her to tell the truth.

Palin and her ticket are creating any diversion they can to bring our country down in order to win the election. It is a guide to all voters on how they will run the country-a dangerous way. With lies, mis-statements,and limited information as mcCain and Palin both feel they know better than the voter. The GOP ticket is putting us in a danerous position with the world and our own economy.

It disturbs me that some Americans and news agencies can not distinguish between negative advertising and bringing up valid points about a candidates resume. Senator Obama could stop it all if he would only be truthful and present facts, not more lies, about his past. Lets see an official birth certificate so that the law suit by Mr. Berg goes away. Lets see facts about the money given to Senator Obama by Ayers to use for educational funds and how they were used, even if it was use in ACORN and how. Facts with documents. Not just talk.

The McCain Campaign has lied OVER and OVER AGAIN and they keep getting away with it...what is wrong with you people.Tthe truth is right in front of you. Either you are in denial with the lies from the McCain Campaign or you are basing this election on race and color. If that's the case, you are basically letting McCain get away with these lies and you are voting for an individual who practically cheated to get into the White House. That would be the end of the United States of America.

It's a shame, we have an ethical, intelligent, man of honor who has played a fair race but I guess that is not good enough due to his skin color......you guys are pathetic....

Then....Sarah Palin bascially "lied"! So, how long do we take the lies she is spewing all over the US without some form of clarification? As a U.S. Citizen, I am investigating how I can get a number of signatures and begin a legal process of lies and slander against Sarah Palin and the McCain campaign staff. Anyone out there with me????????

If anyone had asked to delay any deals in Iraq it would be the current administration on behalf of a possible McCain administration.

Obama, quite simply, does not have the power to do such a thing.

Why are ones sources not"vetted" more clearly with todays communications? (Does WMD conjure up anything?) Once something is "out" there it's kinda hard to retract from certain peoples minds. "Obama is an ARAB." (Quoting the lady in the red shirt at the McCain rally.) SO! It's not true, but, why should it be made a difference!? You have good and bad in all types of human beings. There will always be a group of humans others tend to put down due to the fact that THEY need to make THEMSELVES feel better. Stupid says as stupid does. It's sad people won't take the time to filter out the junk and draw decisions like an intelligent person.

The dirty campaigning and lies that McCain/Palin are spreading will one day come back to haunt them. It's just more of the same discredited Bush / republican lying and scheming that we're familiar with from the last 8 years. It's strange to me how they can parade how religious and pious they are when any religious document I've ever read commands against lying and stealing (lying in an attempt to ruin a man's reputation counts as stealing).

Lies eventually expose themselves. The real conflict is wether people choose to believe them or not.
