Obama did not ask to delay security agreement, Iraqi FM says

The Iraqi foreign minister weighed in Sunday on a stateside campaign trail controversy.
The Iraqi foreign minister weighed in Sunday on a stateside campaign trail controversy.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) – Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama did not urge Iraqi officials to delay a decision on a security agreement with the United States, Iraq's foreign minister told CNN on Sunday.

The statement by Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari refutes a recent published report and a statement by Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin that Obama tried to influence Iraqi politicians negotiating with the United States to score political points.

Fact Check: What did Obama tell the Iraqis?

Obama "never, ever discouraged us not to sign the agreement," Zebari said. "I think this was misrepresented, and I have clarified this case in a number of interviews back in the United States recently."

The Washington Times reported Friday that in June, Obama told Iraqi leaders in Baghdad that an agreement between the United States and the leaders to allow U.S. troops to stay in the country after 2008 should not go into effect unless it had congressional approval.

The newspaper quoted Samir Sumaidaie, the Iraqi ambassador to the United States, about a June 16 telephone conversation between Zebari and Obama.

But the article did not contain a comment from Zebari.

The campaign of Obama's Republican rival, Sen. John McCain, argued that Obama's call interfered with U.S. efforts to reach a "status of forces agreement" with the Iraqi government. The United States and Iraq have yet to announce an agreement despite numerous reports that one was near.

During a Friday fund-raiser in Madeira, Ohio, Palin said Obama tried to influence the negotiations "in a way that would set back America's cause there, while advancing his campaign here."

Yet another great distraction foiled! McCain has run a horrid campaign. His hate and war mongering combined with is inept leadership re: our economic situation – are putting his campaign to a very sleepy and dishonorable end. Thank goodness! I read somewhere yesterday that McCain had felt guilty and apologized over the Keating Five situation years ago. Then he again felt guilty and apologized for his marriage failure.

He doesn't get another chance THIS TIME – no apologies accepted and he can live with his dishonor.

I personally don't believe the Iraq FM, I think that they are only trying to do whatever to get Barack Hussein Obama elected.

WAKE UP AMERICA! we cannot afford to allow Obama to get elected! We need a person that knows what to do from day one into the presidency and that person is McCain!

I am a Hillary Clinton supporter that is voting for McCain/Palin, for I want someone whos knows how to get us out of the mess that Bush has gotten us into.

What can America expect from Sarah Palin.
She has been a proven liar. It's not hard to see that she is Supremely unqualified to be in the VP position.
I just wish John McCain would muzzle his PitBull VP Choice.
She does more damage than good.

To steven...the first comment posted, "What else is knew?" Perhaps, you should have your head examined before touting uneducated, political rhetoric.

Valid arguments only exist when both sides, including one's opposition, are presented.

I have a very good friend in England who says the europeans are very worried that we will put McCain in the WH.

He and his running mate are trying to make us afraid of the Constitutional Scholar – and that is very scarey.

Palin lied again. This is normal for her to lie. Look at troopergate. She did abuse her power and continues to lie about. Take a look people. As Gergen says in cnn, the last few weeks of a campaign tells you how the person will govern. I am tired of lies and corruption from the republican party.

So, let me get this straight: Either Sarah lied or didn't understand something about foreign policy.

The alarming thing is how not shocking this all is. And are we just going to completely ignore the report that found her to be unethical. For all the talk of who Obama "might" be, there is far too little time spent on who McCain (Keating supporter) and Palin (unethical governor) actually are.

Welcome to the world of political speech. Note how he says "never, ever discouraged us not to sign the agreement"? If Big O asked to "postpone" signing the accord that certainly would qualify, because he didn't ask "not to sign", just asked to delay the signing a bit.
