Buckley has resigned his post from the National Review.

(CNN) — Christopher Buckley, the son of conservative icon William F. Buckley, said Tuesday he's resigned from the conservative National Review days after endorsing Barack Obama's White House bid, among the most powerful symbols yet of the conservative discontent expressed this election cycle.

In an online column, Buckley said he had decided to offer his resignation from the magazine his father founded after hundreds of readers and some National Review colleagues expressed outrage he was backing the Illinois senator.

"While I regret this development, I am not in mourning, for I no longer have any clear idea what, exactly, the modern conservative movement stands for," Buckley wrote.

"Eight years of 'conservative' government has brought us a doubled national debt, ruinous expansion of entitlement programs, bridges to nowhere, poster boy Jack Abramoff and an ill-premised, ill-waged war conducted by politicians of breathtaking arrogance. As a sideshow, it brought us a truly obscene attempt at federal intervention in the Terry Schiavo case," he also wrote.

The resignation comes four days after Buckley formally endorsed Obama on the Web site The Daily Beast, writing the presidential campaign had made John McCain "inauthentic," and Obama appeared to have a "first-class temperament and first-class intellect."

In a statement posted on the publication's Web site Tuesday, National Review editor Rich Lowry noted Buckley was writing for the magazine on a trial basis, and took his offer to resign with the "warmest regards and understanding" sincerely. Lowry also took issue with Buckley's contention the magazine had been flooded with angry mail over Buckley's endorsement, saying it had received a relatively small 100 e-mails expressing disapproval.

"It's an intense election season and emotions are running high," Lowry said.

Matt Lewis, a contributing writer to the conservative Web site Townhall.com, told CNN the National Review made the right decision in quickly accepting Buckley's resignation.

"While it is acceptable for a conservative to vote for a third party – or to abstain from voting for McCain – no real conservative could cast their vote for Obama," he said. "The conservative movement didn’t leave him, he left it.

But in his column Tuesday, Buckley expressed disappointment the magazine, and conservatives in general, were not more open to dissenting opinions that his own father once championed.

My father in his day endorsed a number of liberal Democrats for high office, including Allard K. Lowenstein and Joe Lieberman," he said, adding later, "My point, simply, is that William F. Buckley held to rigorous standards, and if those were met by members of the other side rather than by his own camp, he said as much."

Buckley is only the latest among several prominent conservative to express dissatisfaction with McCain and his running mate Sarah Palin. David Brooks, Kathleen Parker, David Frum, Peggy Noonan, and George Will, all high-profile conservative thinkers, have each openly criticized the ticket over the last month.

"Sadly, I think Christopher Buckley is merely the latest example of the “conservative” avant-garde who has succumbed to a common temptation: Becoming more liberal is tantamount to becoming more open-minded. There is a palpable elitism among some of the conservative panjandrum," Lewis said.

Thank you, Christopher Buckley, for being honest.

That is the most important personal attribute a man or woman can possess.

All things in life revolve around honesty, and often it is hard to live up to being honest for many reasons.

But I think being honest also liberates us in so many ways.

Mom in MN   October 14th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

I am impressed with your strength to stand up for what you believe in. this is America, we have the right and responsiblity to do so and not be attacked for it.
Thank you Chris.

Who's left in the GOP?   October 14th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

More evidence that you cannot have a "momentary difference of opinion" with the conservatives. You may have similar conservative views, but if you differ on a single issue, , , , , they will ostracize you without mercy.

Facing Conservatism's Obsolescence   October 14th, 2008 7:30 pm ET

Conservatives are colliding with their philosophy's own obsolescence. Chris Buckley has realized the limitations of conservative philosophy. If you pick up one end of the stick (Ronald Reagan) . . . eventually you pick up the other end of the stick (George W. Bush). Times are different . . . solutions are different . . . stick with bromides of the past . . . and you end up with the stupidity of George W. Bush.

Mark R   October 14th, 2008 7:29 pm ET

No, this is not what a Maverick or a Hero does, runs out when someone disagrees with his choice. If he was a man of his word, he would not quit. He would stand for what he believes in without backing down. This is a man with no backbone to stand up for what he believes, he would rather blaming others for his quitting.

Mel of Alexandria, Virginia   October 14th, 2008 7:29 pm ET

There is no loyalty which should hinder one from full self expression.
It seems as if the conservatives only tolerate those who are willing to be parrots, spewing the same rhetoric in face of the obvious differences.
Mr. Christopher Buckley is an authentic individual who will not surrender his soul to any one or any ideology. The claim of The Eternal is on his life.

rob   October 14th, 2008 7:28 pm ET

Good on Buckley. He's a funny writer and his father had some intellectual credibility. There's no one in the movement these days that could shine his shoes.

I didn't agree much with your father on politics, Chris, but I respected him. He was civil in his disagreement and even witty. I'm glad to see you inherited his civility and clear-thinking.

By the way: "Becoming more liberal is tantamount to becoming more open-minded." per Mr. Lewis in the article.

Can someone please tell me when, exactly, it became wrong to be open-minded. If that is what defines a liberal, then I guess that is what I am. Never realized it before.

Jennie   October 14th, 2008 7:24 pm ET

Unlike some other Republicans we all know, Mr. Buckley actually puts his "country first".

Tanya   October 14th, 2008 7:23 pm ET

Not everyone is as good with words as Mr. Buckley but many moderate Republicans think the same thing.
Being ashamed that one is Republican for, at least, last four years. Watching with growing concern and, lately, with horror, John McCain's erratic behavior. And, to top it all, thoughts of having Sarah Palin as the President!

Goldwater conservatives feel the GOP has been hi-jacked by the christian right. If they can't be ousted to form their own party then the only recourse for someone like Chris Buckley is to leave. True conservatism has been lost. Ask George will.

I am a Canuck in the US. sorry but the american right is so stupid sometimes. Some idiot above says welcome to higher taxes under Obama, but Bush doubled the debt, and the fact Obama realizes someone has to pay the bills is being irresponsible!?! LOL . Fiscally responsible means a balanced budget. Sorry, but McCain is doomed because Bush has been fiscally incompetent. And I thought Ford was great and Bush Sr. not bad. Hated CLinton even though he did a good job. So i am not some Liberal lefty. Just someone who is educated.

Cudos to you Buckley! Senator Obama is Presidential and Honest. I have seen on my job many Republican whites, men and women talking amongst each other saying how they can't believe how McCain and Palin are telling lies one after the other and they are disgusted. I've been disgusted for almost 2 years with the lies of the Republicans that is why I have left the Republican party and gone full force with the Dems. I like hearing the truth and I don't care if Senator Obama raises my taxes, insurance, food bill. If it will get us out of this caa caa that we are in, so be it. Kudo to Mr. Buckley for standing up for your principals. You sir, are a shining beacon of reality and common sense. I too have become disillusioned with the republican conservative base. This republican ticket in this election is the most pathetic tifcket put together in the last 40 years. Mc Cain is out of touch with the common person and Palin is flat out of touch with reality. I cannot beleive this is the best the republicans had to offer. Smears, lies, fear mongering and hate will not get the job done. The American people want solutions not rhetoric. Its time to retire john McWar and send Caribou Barbie back to Alaska. Obam/Biden in the biggest political landslide in voting histlry. YES WE CAN

Pete Collins   October 14th, 2008 7:21 pm ET

Finally, I have some company. It was lonely being the only conservative to see the Bush-Cheney-McCain team for the fraud on conservatism they are. Is Buckley the only well-known conservative willing and able to speak the truth? Inconvenient as it is, what he wrote is in fact the truth.

Anne E.   October 14th, 2008 7:21 pm ET

Although I am a Democrat, I have the greatest respect for Christopher Buckley, as I did for his father. William F. Buckley was an honest, ethical and extremely intelligent person. There are certain realities about this election year that no such person should be inclined to accept. My hat is off to Christopher Buckley for taking an honest and ethical stand and sacrificing for it. His father would be proud of him.

ss   October 14th, 2008 7:21 pm ET

While I disagree with his politics, I have to applaud Mr. Buckley for honoring his own convictions. It's a courageous thing to stand for your beliefs when it means alienating those who you presumed were your friends and colleagues — a la Kathleen Parker. Those of the far right have realized that they can hang together or hang separately — but hang they will. Their time cannot come soon enough.

box101   October 14th, 2008 7:20 pm ET

Interesting, how CNN and other media outlets feel free to characterize the National Review and similar entities as "conservative." Certainly that's true, yet they do not characterize left leaning outlets such as the New York Times as the "liberal" New York Times, or the "liberal" Rolling Stone Magazine, etc. It's okay to qualify a magazine or newspaper as conservative, but not okay to characterize one as liberal.

I understand completely. I am, by no means, as conservative as Buckley, but I generally have more conservative leanings. But when things are so messed up you can't just maintain the status quo. This would be the case no matter who is in charge. Bush has let things hit rock bottom, and John McCain is by no means the answer. Better luck next cycle GOP, but this time around:

The thing is, he didn't leave the conservative party - it left him and all true conservatives who believe in fiscal responsibility and small government. The GOP has a new definition these days and the intelligent GOPers are recognizing its not a favorable one. I am a self-professed liberal, but if there were more Rockefeller Repubs in the GOP, I would be much more inclined to see the party favorably.

California Gold   October 14th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

Just when you think it's safe to rely on people who vote for the party and turn a blind eye to the candidate! McCain is surely setting a record for driving away voters. McCain was doing a good job at turning off "dye in the wool" Republicans. Palin was the catalyst. Now Republicans can't wait to vote Democrat.

This is a new definition of the word 'maverick'. :-)

If a conservative - and let's not kid ourselves here - does it get much more conservative than this man? John Starnes Tampa Florida   October 14th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

Nice to see intelligence and an absorption of facts and recent history outweighs blind allegiance to a failed philosophy. Beginning with Reagan, modern Conservatism has been THE single most disasterous thing to befall our formerly great country. And John McCain and Palin would be thrilled to take the baton from the worst president in our history and continue down the same tragic path in their quest for ego gratification.

The Truth   October 14th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

This country is way to politicized. Im a democrat and i could see myself voting for a republican of the likes of Reagan (although that kind of candidate has not shown themselves for the last 12 years) more people like Buckley should be able to stand up for their beliefs and not have to worry about any backlash.

I respect this man's decision to resign from his position at this conservative outpost. It does seem that republicans, who once were thought of as 'conservative' and with 'tight fiscal policies' have now turned into Washington fat cats, living high off the hog with all kinds of disgusting, wasteful spending, and a terrible gambling addiction (with taxpayers' money) that has truly put this country in the hole. Hopefully it is not too late for something to be done to turn this around. Hopefully, Obama will win the election, and something will actually be done to help save the American legacy in our World's history.

I'm glad to see that there are some conservatives who aren't hoodwinked by lies or hamstrung by party loyalty. The 'conservatives' who ran the country for the past eight years have, indeed, given us " a doubled national debt, ruinous expansion of entitlement programs, bridges to nowhere, poster boy Jack Abramoff and an ill-premised, ill-waged war conducted by politicians of breathtaking arrogance. As a sideshow, it brought us a truly obscene attempt at federal intervention in the Terry Schiavo case," This man is a true maverick, hero and patriot… not the manure that McCain and the current spate of GOP crooks are trying to spread.

George   October 14th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

All this for speaking his mind, I thought this was American? Buckley needs the Profiles in Courage Award.

BOOTSTOMPER   October 14th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

Rich lowery seems like a self absorbed spoiled rich kid..Buckley did the right thing by moving on and i hpoe other conservatives see the light, but i doubt it.

Obama will NEVER have my vote..

Marsha (Atlanta)   October 14th, 2008 7:12 pm ET

Welcome Mr. Buckley…You are very courageous. When Barack is elected we will all have given hatred a big fat smack down!!!!!

Linda31   October 14th, 2008 7:12 pm ET

Is that a nice way of saying they fired him???

Kate Fergus   October 14th, 2008 7:11 pm ET

Congratulations to Mr. Buckley for seeing that conservatism is no longer what it was in the past. John McCain was part of the last eight years.

In addition, the notion that someone who will vote for Obama is more liberal is ridiculous. The fact is, any intelligent person who doesn't vote for Obama and thinks McCain (and his disjointed, flip flopping campaign) is the right person for the job, is either racist or an irrational ideologue.

Chris   October 14th, 2008 7:11 pm ET

"While I regret this development, I am not in mourning, for I no longer have any clear idea what, exactly, the modern conservative movement stands for,"

Excellent statement

The current administration (GOP) has alienated the USA.

GDP has also grown 2x faster under Democrats - per history

Ronnie in Gregory, TX   October 14th, 2008 7:11 pm ET

Mr. Buckley is truly a man of principle and keen intellect. A lot of Americans think conservatives no longer have America in their hearts. They are just conserving stupidity and making this nation the laughing stock of the world. Go conserve yourself–you are a dying breed.

What a jerk. He made his living dissing Dems now he appears to like em.

Amazing.

Julie in California   October 14th, 2008 7:11 pm ET

Awesome! This is the kind of values I want in my party…hooray for you!

Go Obama!

Fred (I)   October 14th, 2008 7:11 pm ET

HAHA! He has seen the Light!

Ron   October 14th, 2008 7:11 pm ET

Finally some conservatives are beginning to see the light! I applaud this man for this difficult decision. I think Americans, especially those on the far right, really need to look hard at what has happened over the past eight years, and then look at themselves in the mirror and takae a long deep breath, and ask the question "Is my political ideology more important or is the country, the future of our children and our institutions?" Those who are true to themselves cannot possibly vote for Mccain/ Palin.

By the way CNN, in case you didn't get this piece of information - October 8th Minnesota State university poll survey puts Obama in front in North Dakota by 2 points (45-43) and an ARG survey in West Virginia puts him in front by 8 points (50-42). I appeal to you to cover even the so called "safe red states" in your excellent electoral map coverage with John King, because I don't think they are showing red anymore.

redhead from toronto   October 14th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

A man who will stand for his priciples, how refreshing. Your father would be proud of you for that. Good luck to you sir, may your future be bright.

Murf   October 14th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

It seems there is no place for a man of principle, and objectivity, in the conservative movement. The same seems to be true of the republican party. Mr. Buckley will no doubt prosper which is not something that can presently be said of Senator McCain, the conservatives or the republicans.

Janine   October 14th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

I agree with Christopher Buckley. I have voted Republican during every presidential election even hate to say for Bush. This is the first time I've actually paid attention. I have been watching these blogs since this past Summer during the primaries. The racist and downright nasty comments about Blacks are absurd. If being Republican and conservative means hating my American neighbor for the color of his skin or his religion, then I want no part of it.

Old white woman for Obama   October 14th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

That's OK Mr. Buckley, the Republicans don't even have a clue what they stand for!
Thank you for your honesty Sir.

David   October 14th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

smart man…calling it as he sees it. I can respect that, even though his beliefs differ greatly from mine.

And thats the bottom line.

Obama/Biden 2008!

Trysh, Los Angeles   October 14th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

I think his father would be proud of his honesty. He's not a Republican just because that is the team he learned as a child. He believes in something and if they aren't living up to his belief system then he is not voting honestly.

I think its irrational and irresponsible to tell someone they aren't self respecting if they vote their conscious and not their team.

randy   October 14th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

may be the tell him to leave because he is bad for business.

Debbie   October 14th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

Dissent is the highest form of patriotism. It's time America realized that "conservatism" has been hijacked - it no longer implies prudence and steadfastness. It's reactionary, intolerant and dangerous. Mr. Buckley you are a brave man, a principled man, and I honor you.

hometowndemocrat   October 14th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

A conservative with a brain and a backbone…………whodda thunk it!

Thank you Mr. Buckley

Big Bear, Bearden, AR 71720   October 14th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

I feel very bad for William Buckley. This is a case of the true prodigal son moving as far away from Dad as possible. How anyone with a conservative influence of any type, support Obama, who is aligned with Ayers, Wright, Rezko, a Saudi millionaire, a former PLO agent, and a card carrying Communist, for President of the free United States, just goes to show how the future generations are willing to torpedo democracy.

John   October 14th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

Wonder how long it's gonna be before Sean Hannity calls this guy a traitor.

Andrea Austin TX   October 14th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

Thank you Christopher Buckley for your courage and your strength. It is my hope that many others in leadership positions such as yours will follow your lead and own the truth. Authentic power lies in truth, on all levels. God bless you.

John Dinwiddie   October 14th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

Here's a man worth watching. Would that
each of us could find the courage to walk
away from each our own "smelly orthodoxy,"
as Orwell put it. Not knowing where one is
ideologically is more often a step up than
a step down.

AM in VA   October 14th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

Being conservative is not a movement; it is a principle. It's been hijacked by a segment of the Republican party.

It's great to see people of principle step forward and repudiate the usurpers (McCain used to be one of these, now he might even lose Arizona !). Bravo Christopher Buckley, your father would be proud !!

Obama '08

pam Eugene OR   October 14th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

That is what integrity looks like! Have a good look McCain because you sure won't see it in a mirror ever again.
Good for you for standing up for your beliefs Mr. Buckley. I find you to be credible an honest.
Thank you Sir and you are correct!
Obama/Biden for truth, honor and the American people

Surafel Melaku   October 14th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

Where is McSame! Ha? Instead of attacking Obama fix your party well, after all you relay of their vote, right?

Dan, TX   October 14th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

By elitist, I guess then mean a person who uses critical thinking and formal logic. There are no elitists in the modern conservative movement with whom I am familiar.

Junni   October 14th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

Good for you, Buckley. That's shameful that the conservative party would boot him like that.

That one is Karl Marxs friend too   October 14th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

Another non story. If he can endorse a left socialist he was never a conservative anyway. He couldn't hold his father's pen….

joe-6-pack   October 14th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

wow…."the magazine his father founded "- wow…wow….no way dude…..you are a true american hero……i respect this guy alot…….

Lesley   October 14th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

Ruinous expansion of entitlement programs should be stapled to the foreheads of Republicans who blame the Dems for entitlements. I always enjoyed Wm. F. Buckley's humor, intellect, and wit and wondered recently how he would feel if he could witness what has become of the party over the last 8 years and also his views on the current presidential race. I feel that he would express the same sentiments as his son. How far down the conservative right has fallen.

Bob in Florida   October 14th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

At last…..a man of integrity who calls it like it is……not like the boneheads who vote for a party….like rooting for a football team..

Joe   October 14th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

Great American

vet for obama   October 14th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

Congratulations, Chris.

You said in a nutshell what the Republicans have been doing in Washington for years—-claiming to be small government and representing high moral values, but sneaking around behind the people and lining their own pockets while being ethically empty….

Just like that Idaho republican Craig who got arrested in an airport bathroom in Minnesota….ugh!!!

A Woman In California For Obama:   October 14th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

Thank you Mr. Buckley! You are truly an inspiration to many republicans who feel just as you do. (WE) Obama supporters thank you and commend you for your decision.

Again, thank you.

Barbara - 65 yr old white female in NC   October 14th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

Stand for what you believe in, or fall for anything. Congrats. Smart man. Repubs are switching over in droves. Can't say I blame them.

On another note: (ha ha - one of CNNs reporters said he attended an ACORN training where about half the people wore Obama buttons, so there is an Obama tie ——- hmmmmm - wonder what buttons the other half wore?).

T   October 14th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

It is quite correct that Mr. Buckley was forced out due to his acknowledgment that the conservative movement has been totally destroyed. McCain / Rove have seriously compromised the status of this country and God help us all.

Hopefully, McCain, 72, will retire now.

Kate   October 14th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

Anyone with any SENSE at all is staying far away from the McCain/Palin ticket, especially after seeing the behavior of their 'base' supporters at rallies. Buckley's abandonment of the Republican party is the latest of many, but it won't be the last. Perhaps after the Republicans stop allowing the far religious right to run their party, they will once again be the party of smaller goverment and will be deserving of a second look. But for now, the choice for any sane and reasonable person is clear: Obama/Biden '08.

bill   October 14th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

Good for you, Mr. Buckley! You deserve tremendous credit for calling you like you see it. No double talk. No word play. Just plain calling it like you see it! ou have earned such respect in this country. Go get 'em!

YES WE CAN OBAMA/BIDEN 2008!
