The Obama announced that Sen. Hagel's wife, Lilibet, will join Michelle Obama at the final presidential debate. The two men are pictured in this file photo during Obama's summer Mid East trip.

(CNN) – The Obama campaign announced that Lilibet Hagel, the wife of Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel, will accompany Michelle Obama at Wednesday night’s final presidential debate.

“I am honored to join Michelle Obama at the debate tomorrow night and to strongly support Senator Obama as our country’s next president,” Lilibet Hagel said in a statement released by the Obama campaign.

“Elections have consequences, and this election may be the most important of my lifetime. We have a chance to throw out the disastrous policies of the last eight years and elect a leader who is smart, honest, steady and wise. I am convinced Barack Obama is the right leader to get us to a very bright future,” Mrs. Hagel added.

Sen. Hagel was recently critical of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee.

Related: Palin's experience a 'stretch,' says Hagel

"She doesn't have any foreign policy credentials," Hagel, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, recently told a Nebraska newspaper. "You get a passport for the first time in your life last year? I mean, I don't know what you can say. You can't say anything."

Hagel is a longtime friend of Sen. John McCain but traveled with Obama to the Middle East in July. He has said he will not endorse either candidate. Hagel is not seeking re-election in the Senate when he term ends at the end of this year.

I suspect that Palin will join Rush Limbaugh in the obscenity of right wing TALK RADIO. She has proven that she will be excellent in that capicity! Good ridance to bad rubbage as my school kids say... Intelligent people just turn Limbaugh OFF.

Only ignorant sheeplike people listen to things like that.... those who can easily be led over the nearest cliff by a smooth talking politician or bible thumping preacher! They are just waiting to be told what to do, because they CANNOT think for themselves.

Too bad there are so many of them! They are coming out of the woodwork for Palin. It's scary.... to say the least!

Go Obama!

Mr. Hopper, you couldn't be more wrong. Take a statistics course.

nicks   October 14th, 2008 7:28 pm ET

Chuck Hagel was working across party lines before it was the acceptable thing to do. As much as I like Biden as Obama's running mate, I had sincerely hoped he would choose Senator Hagel. To make that move would be a real indicator of not only a willingness to work across the isle, but an action in that direction. Since that choice was made, I am still holding out hope that Senator Obama finds a place in his cabinet for Senator Hagel in his cabinet.

For me, an endorsement by Chuck Hagel of Senator Obama over his close friend Senator McCain is a clear indication of McCain's deal with the devil to become more conservative in his politics in order to gain his parties nomination for the Presidency. If Obama is good enough for Hagel, he is good enough for me.

Frank   October 14th, 2008 7:25 pm ET

Hagel will be in Obama's cabinet for sure. He could fill several spots. Maybe Secretary of State Defense. Would be excellent in either post.

MESSAGE TO ALL VOTING FOR OBAMA!
We cannot let the Republicans scare us away from using Obama's middle name. America is not a racist country (atleast wasnt founded with those principles) and there should be nothing wrong when a man's name is Hussien! We arent a bunch of 2 year olds that would connect him to Saddam because they share a same name. Grow up people. I am voting for Barack Hussien Obama and Im proud of it! Hes a better American than alot of you out there.

One member states the AOL poll is never mentioned in the main stream media due to how it looks for McCain. It has McCain by a 10% margin, and it has OVER 150,000 members voting, which is far more than any poll taken by any news media. And, just for grins, I tried to vote twice, and it stated I had already voted. I don't know what to think anymore, except WAKE UP AMERICA before we have Chavez and company roaming our streets as they don't want McCain in due to his experience.

I have to agree with the post that says Dobbs is very anti-obama. I see he trys to say he's is an independant but his true feeling comes through. I often agrees with Dobbs on many issues, but I see his disdain for Obama, everytime he speaks.

Kate Fergus   October 14th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

When you have the choice of voting for someone who runs a flip flopping, erratic, and inconsistent campaign, with someone who is running a smart, intelligent, thoughtful campaign, which one would you vote for?

When you have the choice of voting for a ticket which has presented itself as truly presidential or voting for a ticket that resorts to swift boating and lies, which ticket would you vote for?

I am not surprised that Mr. Nagel's wife is supporting Obama. He is the only viable choice. There is no question that Barak Obama and Joe Biden has presented themselves as the only choice for '08.

Mr. Hopper:
I think you said it yourself that the poll you link to is not scientific and surely contains a great deal of selection bias (who under 65 still has an AOL account?) I wouldn't get too excited about it, it's like looking at a poll of national review readers or Fox news watchers.

mel   October 14th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

Oh my god.....John McCain your ship is sinking. The rats are looking for a safe harbor. Senator Hagel has not supported either president candidate, but his wife is supporting Obama. Palin strikes again.....another woman's vote lost. This a loss from McCain's own party....not the evangelicals. McCain keeps on being mad at "that one", but his poor decisions keep kicking him to the curb. He has no one to blame but himself. I hope that at the next debate that McCain decides to be dignified and act like a grown-up. He cannot display contempt and anger. He has lost all the trust he might have had, but he could still retain his dignity.

John in VA   October 14th, 2008 7:18 pm ET

Mr. Hopper-

This doesn't come as much of a surprise to me since AOL's customer base is 1) people with few computer skills, and 2) people in rural areas that have to rely on dial-up for Internet access. Now, if Comcast or Time-Warner did the same thing, I think we would see the opposite.

As you stated before, this poll is unscientific. There is nothing stopping Joe-six-pack from stuffing the ballots in favor of McCain. You can't rely on these types of polls (ask the Hungarians who almost had to drive across the Stephen Colbert Bridge).

It is funny how Hagel said Palin was not ready to be vp but does he really believe Obama is ready to be pres? Don't get me wrong I don't think palin is ready either but I think she has alot more experience than Obama. How many trips did obama make before running in this election? They all say obama has so much more foreign policy experience, what is it !! this is a man who went to half the countries in europe but has never been to Canada( largest trading partner and largest supplier of oil to the U.S) I would think you should visit those countries you actually need rather than those you want to like you.

America MUST give Barak Obama a chance. What do you need most? Economic, social and political stability – America reaching out to itself and to the rest of the global community, perfoming a credible role as a global leader. Then the Talibans, the Hezbollahs, the Al Quaeda's will gradually be history. Even Osama Bin Laden might give himself up voluntarily!!!!!!!!!
Peace and Goodwill to all men!

California Gold   October 14th, 2008 7:12 pm ET

This is quite an indicia of the migration occurring in the Republican Party this general election. McCain wasn't doing so badly for a while. Not dazzling, but not bad either. Then he chose Palin and the hatred began. Now we read bits and pieces of Republicans turning their back on McCain either for directly supporting or flat out refusing to vote for him. Moreover these Republicans are making no bones about why they will vote for Obama. It isn't necessarily about McCain personally, but between the 2 candidates the difference is crystal clear and stark.

You do know that for statistical reasons, most polls are ~600, ~1000, ~3000 right? More or less makes the curve less accurate – take statistics. Drug/Medical research is done the same way.

Additionally, the AOL "poll" has always had McCain ahead... I'm surprised Fox News shows Obama leading... they also have a conservative base.

Cynthia - Arkansas   October 14th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

The Obama's show the true bipartisan leadership this coutry is hungry for. All of the hate filled stuff is making me sick. This country has too many serious problems to be letting the color of a person's skin determine this election. How sad for America. It makes me sad to think that people in this country would rather have 4 more years of the same failed policy or worse, than to vote for Obama. I am sad for the whole world's sake.

We have to turn out the vote like there is no tomorrow, because our future is totally at stake here. If we have 4 more years of Republican rule, I don't think you will even recognize this country when they are done. I lost my job of 26 years in the first 8 years, do we have to lose everything else before people in this country wake up?

Having Mrs. Hagel on board is good news. There is one and only one person out there who's endorsement really matters however. That person is General Colin Powell. Mr. Powell is widely respected by both parties and has been recruited by both parties at one time or another. I paln on voting for Senator Obama and would love to see Powell endorse him. If he endorses McCain, it would throw John a lifeline. General Powell has my respect and admiration regardless of the candidate he endorses. I would have voted for him in a second.

I think if someone is caught using cocaine they normally go to jail. I am surprised that Obama escaped jail since he committed jail term offenses. Or did he serve time?

Our jails are full of convicted drug users. you would think that there would be a special cell for Obama, who admitted to using illegal drugs.

You have to ask yourself, has he been rehabilitated or is he a drug user risk. Either way he is risky and a roll of the dice. For some reason i just don't trust him.

Frodo,

Some of us believe that government has an important role in our lives. We need government to pay for roads and schools and policemen and firemen and our military. We need government to pay for our services such as water and garbage. We need government to take care of our seniors when they retire and our sick or unemployed.

We should also expect decent healthcare from our government. Government is also needed to improve the quality of our chidren's education so that our nation can remain competitive in this global economy. Improving education will eventually reduce jail populations and save tax payers lots of money.

It's not about the party, its about the people and Obama is for the people! What else do people want? He has experience, character, intelligence, sound judgement, humality, intergerity, (Gosh, that far out ways what we've had for the last eight years and what the other side seeks to bring to the table) and this may or may not be important but he is very handsome (don't worry Mitchelle, I respect you, him and the American people:)). Hagel's wife sees the light. It is time for change. I know many support Obama but I hope we all realize that his term in office is not going to be long enough to fix all our problems. He will put us on the road back in the right direction but it is going to take many years for this country to recover it's status in the world. At least we have a leader that can do that for us.

The next thing that has to be done is that we must all work with him to fix OUR country. He will only be our leader. We, AMERICANS, will have to do the labor and we will have to sacrifice to do it. I hope all realize this.

McCain should have never picked Pailin. America simply can't stomach her as possibly the President? Can you imagine?

Veteran for change   October 14th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

I wish Sen Hagel would come out and formally endorse Sen Obama. I think it is quite clear he sees who the real choice for change is in this election.

Go Obama/Biden 08!

bern   October 14th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

This is a bit off topic but CNN's Lou Dobbs is fanning the flames of hate and misinformation. CNN should be ashamed to have this idiot on the air. His barely veiled hatred fro Obama is obvious in every show he does. Not content to just play his phony "independent" card, Dobbs intentionally misstates facts to minimize Obama.

W. Elizabeth Jahn   October 14th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

Yay for Chuck and Lilibet...they are the true, THINKING Republicans, not the Republicans who are brainwashed and stubborn and can't see the forest for the trees...Wake up, we need more conscientious, thinking citizens to clean up the mess GW has made for 8 years

Tim E   October 14th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

That's a nice arrangement. If McCain brings up Ayers, these two ladies can hold the barf bag for what the other is bringing up.

Laszlo in L.A.   October 14th, 2008 6:49 pm ET

I had never heard of Lillabet Hagel before this story, but reading her clear headed and well articulated comments, have to say this endorsement carries substanially more weight with me than Hank Williams Jr. singing songs about liberals and terrorists.

AZ Senior   October 14th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

Sen.Hagel has always been a most admirable man in the political world, I hope there will be an important place for him in the Obama administration,

Linda   October 14th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

Obama's hope, shared by his supporters, for unity in our country is becoming a reality. This is good news indeed.

Naomi   October 14th, 2008 6:47 pm ET

GO OBAMA/BIDEN!!!

Lisa   October 14th, 2008 6:46 pm ET

Mrs. Hagel, I am a big fan of your husbands, he is some kind of straight up guy!! A republican, yes, but one of the good ones!!!I think it is terrific that you are a strong lady and votes for whom she truly knows is the best candidate, I am sure your husband is also proud of you!!! We sure do appreciate your support!!!!!!!!!!

Cathy   October 14th, 2008 6:46 pm ET

Mr. and Mrs. Hagel are my kind of Republicans. They are smart, wise, and Obama supporters. They understand that America can't afford 4 more years of McBush and his clueless sidekick.

Anonymous   October 14th, 2008 6:46 pm ET

Rhino Repulican in name only always voted with Democrats must have thought he'd do better. covered all bases

Enlightened Voter   October 14th, 2008 6:46 pm ET

As a staunch Obama supporter I would have loved Obama to pick Hagel but I am very happy with Biden. Hagel has shown as a republican he cannot support their dirty tricks. He actually has honor unlike mccain or palin.

rosety   October 14th, 2008 6:45 pm ET

Excellent. Thank you ma'am. Your husband, Sen. Chuck Hagel is an honorable man and highly respected.

Obama/Biden.

MemeForObama   October 14th, 2008 6:45 pm ET

That's a true American

Ed McDuffie   October 14th, 2008 6:45 pm ET

I believe that Chuck Hagel will be President Obama's Sec. of Defence. A good choice that I am willing to except. There could be other spots that Chuck could be very qualified to fill if called on to serve.

AlaskanWannaB   October 14th, 2008 6:44 pm ET

I am so proud of all of Obama's supporters. You are the BEST. This is the first campaign that I've watched so closely and I am proud of the bloggers on this site. I am a 51 year old, black female who have always wanted to live in Alaska. As a visitor of Alaska on many occasions, Alaska is such a beautiful state–as is the people of Alaska. Sarah Palin is not representative of the people of that great State. She is an abnormality. I hope by the time I move to Alaska, if God's willing, she is no longer Governor. I am pretty certain that the people of Alaska will vote her out of office next term. Not to digress–thanks to all the Obama supporters. You make me proud to be an American.

rick   October 14th, 2008 6:44 pm ET

Obama said today that people dont have capitol gains and he is going to tax them. I will not vote for a person who thinks and wants everyone to be poor and dependent on the government, a tax and hide president is soon coming to make our lifes miserable.

carol   October 14th, 2008 6:44 pm ET

Welcome Mrs Hagel a true patriot for seeing the way the country is going and having the courage to vote for the right candidate we applaud you.
Mrs Hagel alongside the rest of America are ready for change a real change with new hope for this country and that we will see in Nov when Sen Obama is elected President of the United States.

Elder McClendon   October 14th, 2008 6:44 pm ET

I CAN SEE SENATOR CHUCK HAGEL IN AN OBAMA ADMINISTRATION AS A CABINET MEMBER.

roset   October 14th, 2008 6:44 pm ET

Excellent. Thank you ma'am. Your husband, Sen. Chuck Hagel is a honorable man and highly respected.

Obama/Biden.

Mccain cries wolf again   October 14th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

This election is all but over.

Mccain and Fox news are crying wolf yet again on ACORN. This is getting pathetic!

They keep moving from one extreme to another but it's just making Mccain look stupid.

Go home Gramps.

Deb n Texas   October 14th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

Senator Hagel will be coming along soon!

Mike   October 14th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

If Chuck Hagel was running, he'd have my vote, period. One of the honrable Republicans. He isn't running unfortunately, so my vote goes to Obama. Thanks Senator and Mrs. Hagel.

Dan, TX   October 14th, 2008 6:42 pm ET

Obama, a common sense centrist who can work with moderate republicans. How refreshing!!!!!

Building consensus in the middle, now and for the next eight years – Obama/Biden.

boz   October 14th, 2008 6:42 pm ET

Excellent. Thank you ma. Your husband, Sen. Chuck Hagel is a honorable man and highly respected.

Obama/Biden.

An independent   October 14th, 2008 6:42 pm ET

That is bringing the country together.

Frances   October 14th, 2008 6:42 pm ET

Good Job Michelle and Smart thinking Mrs Hagel!!

Lauren in California   October 14th, 2008 6:42 pm ET

We need more of people reaching across party lines, and no more of the divisivness that has been going on lately with the republican camp.

Amy   October 14th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

I love it!

Obama/Biden 08!!

Lynn in NM   October 14th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

Well, that makes me rethink my vote. Someone's wife is supporting Obama. Wow!!

Lee   October 14th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

Even William F Buckley's son has endorsed Obama (which cost him his job at the National review, the once thinking man's conservative magazine that his father founded.

this election is shaping up between those that think (and actually put "Country First") and those that easily swayed by the hate and stupidity that the Republican Party now markets as it's only reason for existence.

It's shameful how the republican party has descended this way.

Amy   October 14th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

Thank you Mrs. Hagel. And thank you Senator Hagel for your honesty regarding Governor Palin. I wish more Republicans would stand up and do the right thing-admit that Palin was a poor choice at best, a dangerous choice at worst.

Barbara - 65 yr old white female in NC   October 14th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

I like both women. Good Luck, Ladies.

On another note: (ha ha – one of CNNs reporters said he attended an ACORN training where about half the people wore Obama buttons, so there is an Obama tie --- hmmmmm – wonder what buttons the other half wore?).

HA HA HA HA HA

Rob - WA   October 14th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

Wow! BAM. How many more nails can go into that McFailin coffin??

The American Dream is Alive and Well   October 14th, 2008 6:40 pm ET

Welcome Mrs. Hagel!

Obama/Biden '08

REDNECKS LOVE OBAMA   October 14th, 2008 6:40 pm ET

I expect he will appoint Hagel or some other Republican to his cabinet... Obama will help UNITE our country instead of divide it like McCain/Palin is doing.

All you can say about Acorn.. Is Obama cheated Hillary Clinton out of her Leadership Race.... By the same Tactic's..

Bingo!!!   October 14th, 2008 6:39 pm ET

Hagel is right about Palin.

She foreign policy experience is seeing Russia from her house!

Oh, she also has experience in how to be Unethical & Abuse her powers!

She is also known to have supported her husband who was part of a party that wants to separate Alaska from USA.

Finally, she also knows how to make a small town go from zero deficit to a $20 million deficit!!

marcia   October 14th, 2008 6:39 pm ET

it is about time that people followed their beliefs instead of their "party"

Mike   October 14th, 2008 6:38 pm ET

Hagel for Prez!

Branden   October 14th, 2008 6:38 pm ET

We need more politicians who will tell the truth. It seems that the straight talk express has a flat tire...

Brian   October 14th, 2008 6:37 pm ET

The Hagels are a great American family and the fact that they are supporting Obama's White House run just makes me that much more confident that I'm voting for the right person for president. In fact, I'll be voting for him later today (absentee) and I am exhilarated I finally get to take part in this historic process!

Guru X   October 14th, 2008 6:37 pm ET

Sign of the times?

HKSESQCPA   October 14th, 2008 6:37 pm ET

Hagel for Secretary of Defense or of State. He is the best Republican out there. Would have been a venerable candidate had he run.

frodo   October 14th, 2008 6:37 pm ET

As long as good people who call themselves Republicans, cling to the idea that their party is still with them and fiscally conservative, our country will go down the tubes. Open your minds, people. Bob Barr is the only fiscal conservative still in the running.
What we need in a debate....is...a...debate...

And as long as good people who call themselves Democrats, who value individuality, and government out of your personal business, you too, are part of the problem by clinging to your party line. Bob Barr has worked closely with the ACLU and is against the war in Iraq...in fact, he is against the huge interventionist policy that we have had for decades. So, if you are anti-war, and don't want the government dictating who can get married, then Libertarian Bob Barr is your candidate.

Clinging to these old party ideas that have been corrupted just allows the corruption to continue. Vote for real change. Vote for Liberty.

Cathy Agu   October 14th, 2008 6:37 pm ET

wow

Griff   October 14th, 2008 6:36 pm ET

But refuses to tell the truth... Mr Hagle...

Anita from Arizona   October 14th, 2008 6:36 pm ET

A seat for Hagel in an Obama Administration is exactly where Hagel belongs.

JohnGalt   October 14th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

I believe Mrs. Lilibet Hagel (great first name) has stated the opportunity Americans have to elect a President who will flush the damaging policies of the past 8 years. Bush is the worst, and most corrupt president in modern American history.

LYNETTE IN CA   October 14th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

I LOVE IT!

Can't wait for President Obama to be sworn in on January 20, 2009!   October 14th, 2008 6:34 pm ET

Can y'all hear that crashing sound? It is the implosion of the McSame/Failin campaign.

McCain/Palin = Shameful, hateful behaviour   October 14th, 2008 6:34 pm ET

Bravo, Mrs. Hagel! One more Republican turning against her own party – hurrah!

karen-phoenix   October 14th, 2008 6:34 pm ET

How wonderful!!! All the good republicans are jumping ship!!! Susan Eisenhower has been on Obama's advisory team for a while. She was wonderful at Dem convention–she specializes in Russian affairs.
I've been a republican for over 40 years!!! I go with the good republicans–straight to Obama!!!
God Bless Obama/Biden and the United States of America

Retired Republican Vet for Obama   October 14th, 2008 6:33 pm ET

That about says it all. (I worked on John's campaign in 2000 and even wrote in his name in the general election BTW)

Obama/Biden 08...or if the real McCain shows up I 'll vote for him

AMERICAN   October 14th, 2008 6:33 pm ET

Actions speak louder than words..we know who he supports...Obama!

paula   October 14th, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Obama is a uniter, McCain is a divider. For the sake of our country in this world, please vote for OBAMA/BIDEN

Mike   October 14th, 2008 6:32 pm ET

A good example of how the decision in this election is so critical and transcends political party. Thank you, Senator and Mrs. Hagel, for your wise choice and your public endorsements!

Bring it on!   October 14th, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Can't ask for better company! Mrs. and Senator Hagel are patriots. Thank you for speaking the truth and reaching across party lines in the name of truth, honor and justice!

I cannot wait for the debate tomorrow when Barack has his third smack down on McCain! He will run circles literally and figuratively around McCain.

Rep. Lewis was RIGHT on target.   October 14th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

Too late McCain. The History books are already being written. And you and Sarah Palin will go down as a disgrace to American politics. McCain style tactics. Palin type attacks. The age of McCainism.

MATT WILL, W-S N.C.   October 14th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

Any more Republicans ready to get on board? The waters fine..... Obama 2008

David, Silver Spring, MD   October 14th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

I guess Chuck will have to stay home and watch on TV, unless he's ready to make official what is so obvious to all concerned: that he supports Barack Obama as our next President.

Schneider (I) - CA   October 14th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

McCain = 90% x Bush

It doesn't need to go any deeper or further than that. It says it all. 90%.

Paying Attention   October 14th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

A leader who is smart, honest, steady and wise.

Answer: Obama

Grace Corcoran   October 14th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

I will miss Senator Hagel when his term ends - an intelligent Republican (few and far between.) Best wishes to you both.

fixthebroken   October 14th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

:-)

Now if Chuck Hagel could endorse Barack Obama, that would be wonderful. McCain can have Lieberman - a Hagel endorsement would mean a bunch more for Obama.

Felines for Freedom   October 14th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

GOP for Obama! I know this is old news, but I still love it.

nate   October 14th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

AKA Im speaking for my husband Chuck, who wishes he could do it himself.

Griff   October 14th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

Too Late for John McCain? Too Late for The USA... I keep forgetting, your only a Small Portion Of America..

The Way I See It...   October 14th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

Chuck Hagel = Secretary of Defense or State

California girl   October 14th, 2008 6:27 pm ET

Absolutely, Mrs. Hagel. Thank you for leaving the dark side of politics and coming to the side of CHANGE. We welcome you with open arms.

Change is coming soon!

CMJ   October 14th, 2008 6:27 pm ET

Thank you Mrs. Hagel. I agree.

mary ca   October 14th, 2008 6:27 pm ET

Yes, good thought

GeorgiaPeachforObama   October 14th, 2008 6:27 pm ET

Good for the Hagels. I admire people who put country first and get beyond party politics.

People who truly want to put "Country First" should vote for Obama, because McCain is clearly putting himself first.
