The federal appeal court ruling in Ohio on voter registration is a legal victory for the Republican Party.
The federal appeal court ruling in Ohio on voter registration is a legal victory for the Republican Party.

(CNN) - A federal appeals court on Tuesday ordered Ohio's secretary of state to establish a system to verify hundreds of thousands of newly registered voters by Friday.

Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner also has to make the eligibility information available to all 88 county election boards and use government records to check for voter registration fraud.

Nine of the 16 members of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals concurred with an opinion that upheld a lower court's ruling in the lawsuit filed by the Ohio Republican Party against Brunner.

Yeah, they better do something after that 2004 debacle. There will be a state in this election that will play a pivotal role that will also have problems (fraud).

JDP   October 15th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

Someone asked why the lawsuits against voter fraud were in the battle ground states.... Where else woud it be? If Obama wants to win he has to win the battle ground states thus more voter registration and voter fraud in these states.

Matt   October 15th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Dear Laura, Boston:

Yes. We can read your comments. They are borne of ignorance and a fervent belief that you can be correct despite countervailing factual evidence.

In keeping with the theme of this blog, you should probably read the ENTIRE decision issued by the Court. It can very very easily be found via Google. The dissents make very clear that this decision is unlikely to stand unless the Sup. Ct. decides to split along party lines (again) or unabashedly refuses to grant certiorari.

Go read, and learn. Vote informed.

Thank you,

The American Public

I'm almost finished reading "Make Believe Maverick" by the Rolling Stone. Thanks to whomever suggested the read. I'm saddened at the fact that my dislike for McCain is now stronger than my dislike for George W... McCain may have been a better candidate in 2000 compared to now, but he appears to have been misguided his entire life.

ohhh... Like ACORN registering the same people multiple times (some as many as 70+) is not voter fraud? Get your head out of the sand and look at your own party libs!!
Just recently 2100 of 5000 registrations done by the non-partisan (hahaha!!) ACORN were dumped. ACORN!! Our tax dollars at work!

How can this be voters fraud? Have they cast a vote yet? If the McCain camp was winning in the polls right now, we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

Matt, Manchester, CT   October 15th, 2008 11:53 am ET

"Multiple registrations do not equate to multiple votes on the evening of the election." – The response here is similar to many excuses Democrats make when caught with their own problems. It's essentially saying, "well it may be wrong, but think about this other circumstance instead." So it's ok to have people fraudulently reigstering, that's not too bad. The fact that this poster's name is "John Galt" makes me laugh even harder. How on earth would any Democrat take the name of one of Ayn Rand's most famous characters??????? That guy obviously never read Atlas Shrugged – must have seen the name somewhere in the New York Times.

Why isn't there any court ruling on that?
Is there anything that can be done???????

Can someone who knows more than I do respond to this? Thanks.

Laura, Boston   October 15th, 2008 11:50 am ET

Ken from Dallas:

What you said is true. Voter registration fraud is different from voter fraud....however when ACORN members knowing hand the same person (as Anderson Cooper brought out) 73 forms...that stinks!

It is fraud! It is bad enough that the FBI is looking into it in many many states.

That is what the problem has been. If one Mickey Mouse registration was put in after an ACORN worker handed them the form fine...but to pay someone in cigarettes (primarily homeless) if they fill out multiple forms. Sorry! I agree with LOU DOBBS...this problem shouldn't exist in this country.

A third world country does a better job (IRAQ) holding elections. They dipped fingers in ink so noone could vote twice.

Susie, Senator Obama has nothing to do with ACORN voter fruad. Stop believing every talking point conservative talk show host, conservative talk radio host and the republicans put out there. ACORN is independent of the Obama campaign and the youngsters working for them to register voters turned in fake ballots just to collect some dough. The likely hood of "Joe Smith" showing up to vote in several states with a MATCHING ID, with the CORRECT address is unlikely. Lets stick to the facts and not the false accusations. I know this is ALL the republicans and their "diehard" fans have but it does not make it true Susie.

Confirm the registration of voters regardless of what party they're registered under. This is fair, yes? It is amazing to me to see how the Republicans are starting early with the voting issues. GWB cheated his way into the white house 2 elections in a row and nothing was ever said or done about that. Now look at the state of our country, I am sure the Republicans are so proud of their decisions to help him get there by any means necessary.

It is amazing that all the issues that we are having are coming from the swing states. Something doesn't smell right here.

Is it not true that there is at least one Republican in these branches to verify the registrar? So unless these people are going to rise from the dead and Mickey Mouse and all his friends show up at the polls to vote. What does that have to do with anything? The ones who actually committed the fraud are the ones that need to have there commissions revoked and fired.

ACORN is known for registering Democratic voters but that does not mean those in office have control over what other people do and say when "Big Brother" isn't watching. Just look at McCain and Palin...we all know McCain wishes he could have put a muzzle on her.

By the way I am a woman no sexism here!

Gary, are you serious. Palin and McCain both are allowed to walk away from reporters without answering a single question, and no one complains. Palin has been allowed to only speak with the reporters of her choice, and no one complains. She and McCain have stirred hate at their rallies, and not one reporter has seriously held their feet to the fire on the mavericky behavior. If Obama had been found guilty to abusing power in Illinois, you betcha, that would have been played for WEEKS up until the election. If Obama had a pastor that conducted actual witch hunts, that woud have played for weeks. If Michelle Obama had an actual tie with a group trying to secede from the union, that would have been played for weeks. So, John McCain/Palin plays the card, Mainstream media is picking on me? I say stop interviewing them both since they pick and chose when and how they are going to respond. If they win, the Republican party is finished, remember how we celebrated when Bush won......

$800,000 of Obama's campaign money to ACORN!!!
But, of course, the rife voter fraud has nothing to do with him, nothing to do with incentives for 'Get out the vote for Obama'.

Barack Obama (Community Organizer) + CRA + ACORN + James Johnson + Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae kickbacks + Barney Frank + Chris Dodd + Chuck Schumer + Democrats blocking GSE regulation

They all add up to a housing market and Wall St. meltdown – bad judgment at best, and corruption at its highest level at worst.

Add to that Tony Rezco + Rev. Wright + Farrakhan + Ayers = more bad judgment

If you want to talk about fraudulent, how can any news source be reporting electoral votes when we haven't even voted yet? How can the electoral college be committing their votes when we haven't even held the election yet?

Will it even matter what the American people say on November 4th if the electoral college has already decided? Looks a lot like the Democratic Nomination process.......delegates and superdelegates vs the actual vote of the people.........

OIF VET   October 15th, 2008 11:09 am ET

Why don't we just bring back Poll Taxes. Why is it that Iraq can hold elections without problems in the middle of a war and we let Lawyers from both parties try to find ways to keep Americans from voting. What a disgrace.

Candy West Virginia   October 15th, 2008 11:08 am ET

NO One, and I mean NO One can steal the election the way the repubs did in the last two. This has nothing to do with Obama and you all know it, it is the rethuglicans up to their typical tactics because they know they are losing big time. The rethuglicans invented voter fraud. Stop listening to faux news and rush and get some facts.

STOP THE HATE   October 15th, 2008 11:08 am ET

What is all the fuss? Just show ID when you vote!!! If the registrant is dead, obviously won't show up to vote. If they are under a false name, they couldn't have a gov't issued ID. . . This is DUH material.

Acorn, by the way, registers VOTERS, not only democrats. Whatever stupid things they as an organization have done has NO bearing on either candidate. They, as an independent (albiet liberal leaning) organization should be investigated and punished as deemed necessary.

Obama is not for fraudulent voting or registrations. He doesn't need that to win. All he needs is to be who he is, an inspiring and intelligent LEADER.
Palin is sinking McCain's ship anyway with all her hate.

This whole thing, along with the "accidental" purging in other key states reeks of the old Repulican games.

But YES WE CAN overcome this BS. Everyone verify your registration and get your butts out the door on the 4th!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jn   October 15th, 2008 11:08 am ET

This is for all the uninformed Republican spin meisters: Obama has nothing to do with the voter "REGISTRATION" fraud. Acorn hired these people who were given money for voters they could register. A chosen few decided to be lazy and fill out the forms. Acorn group found the forms, checked them over and realized they were not genuine. Acorn , by state law, must turn in all forms filled out..Legal or not legal...Barack Obama has NOTHING to do with this. Change your channel when the right-wing neo-cons are on. They are feeding you nothing but bold face lies! I just feel so sorry for all of you. I thought the American people were more intellegent than this...I'm sad to say I was really wrong about you!!! If you want to talk about voter fraud though, take a look at the elections of 2000 and 2004! Nice try this time Republicans...you won't be able to steal democrat votes this year!!!!!!

proud army and navy mom   October 15th, 2008 11:07 am ET

It's a good idea to verify new registration forms. Sen Obama is the first person to want people only eligible to vote, voting, so this is not a problem.

My question is where they not verifying all new voter's registration forms before and if not why?

Bill - Ann Arbor, MI   October 15th, 2008 11:07 am ET

Verifying voters is a MUST, but last I checked (at least here in Michigan) you are triple checked when you go to vote.. You are ID'd when you register, they mail you a card to your registered address & then you provide your issued voter registration card, your drivers license & they match the info to the printout from their database BEFORE you even get a ballot. I don't see how fake registrations really does much to help a candidate if that check at time of voting is done.. As far as pre-votes at time of registration, if they weren't properly checked at the time they were done they need to be verified again BUT in no way should they invalidate the people already registered & verified properly as that is just red tape.

Btw, since when is it only Democrats who would cheat on registrations?!? Give me a break! Worst case scenario it is nealy 50/50. ;-)
Bill – Ann Arbor, MI

If my vote doesn't count i'm going to be ticked off.

Dave From Philly   October 15th, 2008 11:06 am ET

In the past every time I went to vote, I was always ask what my name and address was. The person verified the information I gave and then crossed my name off the list. I was able to vote.

Now we have voter registration cards. You cannot get a voter registration card if you do not have a real address. Most of the "Acorn" registration forms that have been reported in the news, do not have real names or adresses. Hence, they will not be getting registration cards.

The person or people that filled out these forms will not have any effect on this election, because they will not be voting.

Stop making a mole hill into a mountain. Dumb people should not be allowed to vote.

Charles L. Shaw, Liverpool, NY   October 15th, 2008 11:06 am ET

Come on folks when are you going to see that it is both of the major parties who are cheating? Both of these parties have lead our nation to economic crisis, because both of these parties have lost sight of the U.S. Constitution. Both of these parties have lost sight of the freedoms of it's citizens. To them you are nothing more than a taxpayer to be squeezed for ever dime you can earn.

I find it very amusing that some rogue folks endorse Obama and now he's reaching across party lines? That is the biggest joke I have seen today. Any real conservative would never endorse the leftist socialistic views of Obama. They were never conservatives then. It's ok if they change their view, but don't call them conservatives. "Spread the wealth" and Patriotic to pay taxes more than others is NOT even moderate. It is pure socialism philosophy. Make no mistake. It is sad to see the direction this once proud country has taken. And furthermore any God Fearing Christian would not support the Democratic position. So please democrats don't say God Bless America. If you believe in Same sex marriage and Abortion you are NOT a christian.

Ken in Dallas   October 15th, 2008 11:00 am ET

We ought to be very much aware of the difference between attempted voter registration fraud and attempted voting fraud. Any time you pay people to go out and register voters, you will get a proportion of fraudulent registrations. By law, you have to submit ALL the registration forms you receive from the people you hire, you are not allowed to throw away even the obviously falsified forms. For these reasons, voter registration fraud is a normal observation in any registration drive.

Voting fraud is a threat to democracy; voter registration fraud, or at least the submission of fraudulent registration forms, is part of the normal process. Only official election authorities have permission to reject any voter registration form; if you collect it and choose not to submit it, you are guilty of voter suppression.

Scott Tucson   October 15th, 2008 11:00 am ET

Excellent! Obama might have gotten away with this typical voter fraud in Chicago but he's finding it a little bit tougher going nation wide with it. I guess this means that Mickey Mouse can't vote for CHANGE this year.

It is obvious to me that anyone making statements that Acorn is trying to steal this election is completely uninformed or just plain stupid.

Turn the channel from Fox News (your source for hate mongering and ignorance) and watch another news source for a day and maybe you might hear some truth. Gosh or perhaps read up on the subject if that is possible.

This was NOT a case of a person registering under several aliases in order to vote. It was a FRAUD perpetrated ON Acorn by a few unethical people who registered fake names in order to get paid more as they are paid by the registration.

No one is going to show up to vote so there is no voter fraud. Educate yourself on issues BEFORE making FALSE statements please.

BJ in NC   October 15th, 2008 10:58 am ET

So Josh, you are asying Obama DOES have a background and experience to handle affairs like Iraq? Cool – about time time. And as others have pointed out, voter registration irregularities are common, and does not constitute voter fraud. Voter fraud is the demense of the GOP. Look at 2000, look at 2004. Look how they "transparently" redrew the Texas districts to favor themselves. They have fine tuned the art of legal whining to get their way.

When the U.S. executive branch starts to look like the city government of New Orleans (aka Mogadishu, LA) and Detroit, MI;

Remember this:

"As is should be. This should happen in every state. It is a crime and it cancels the vote of real Americans that should be able to vote when the voting process is tampered with. Hat's off to Ohio!"

Indeed this mistake was made in 2000 and look what happened.
We need to make sure every voter is legitimate and every vote is counted....PERIOD.

BTW stop trying to link this ACORN thing to Obama you just look foolish. The register Republicans as well. The problem is they work on quota's ACORN ops need to register so many voters in order to get paid and the org to get funding. A recipe for trouble me thinks.

REG in AZ   October 15th, 2008 10:56 am ET

ACORN by law has to submit every registration form filled out, they are not required to test its validity. Only a small percentage of the registrations are suspicious and they haven't been determined to be Democratic or Republican. Both candidates have a history of involvement with ACORN with neither being currently involved. The validity of the voter registrations really need to be validated but it would be a real travesty if somehow legitimate voters were prevented from voting or if it all was used against one candidate or the other for political advantage.

Voters should be verfied and registered within the rule of law. Those of us that consider voting a privilege know that it is certainly worth the effort to obtain the necessary documentation to cast our vote. So little is asked of us – you'd think that doing something with such minimum effort would be outweighed by the greatest privilege in the world – the right to have a voice. Don't cast doubt on the integrity of this important election. ACORN needs to get their act together.

Nimi from NY   October 15th, 2008 10:53 am ET

It takes one to know one. The Republicans have been doing this for so long and equally good at it to the extent they think that voter registration fraud equals voter fraud.

USMC   October 15th, 2008 10:53 am ET

Anybody who believes that there is a scam behind ACORN is an idiot. Acorn hired people to get registrations – totally legal. Some of these people forged documents (Fruad). ACORN recognized this and reported it to the authorities. ACORN IS REQUIRED by law to submit these fraudulent ones anyway. THAT IS THE LAW. They cannot throw them out. So tell me, they obeyed both the spirit and the letter of the law and did exactly what they're supposed to.

And if they're so bad, John McCain has some explaining to do since he was a keynote speaker for them in 2006.

Karen- Bring on the Elections   October 15th, 2008 10:53 am ET

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark. After 8 ruinous years of W. and Co., all the Republicans can offer us is McCain and Co. Enough. Remember Florida in 2000? It seems that the GOP will resort to the most underhanded tactics to win at all costs. Maybe the fat lady has not yet sung, but you can hear her warming up behind the curtain even now.

Gloria   October 15th, 2008 10:52 am ET

Citizens of the United States of America are allowed 1 vote of our choice in each election for each category. While individuals going door to door do not have the means to verify citizenship, they are not responsible for this verification. It is the responsibility of the registrar's office to verify that all cards turned in meet voting qualifications and this should be done.

We will never have fair elections until election laws are enforced.

Super D   October 15th, 2008 10:52 am ET

You got to be kidding me! That stance is so disingenuous.

Here, let me spell it out to all.

ACORN = OBAMA = DEMOCRATS

ines   October 15th, 2008 10:52 am ET

There are checks and balances in place already within the voting system to prohibit somebody from trying to actually make an illegal vote -aside from the registrar form itself.

If it will make Ohio and the nation feel better about their NEW registrants, they can research their own documentation.

However, legitimately new registered voters – the great majority – should in no way be inconvenienced by this process or it is a disenfranchising process – a Republican political ploy which would be the cause for an investigation itself.

37-year-old First Time Voter   October 15th, 2008 10:52 am ET

Obama has nothing to do with voter fraud when it comes to ACORN. He explained this yesterday. Yes he gave a subsidiary of ACORN $800,000 during the primaries, but that has nothing to do with Obama and a bunch of lazy people who filled out fake registration cards just to get paid! He even said this yeserday.

Republicans are so stupid, they're forgetting John McCain was for ACORN before we was against it. Besides, out of all those fake names, do you think a dead person can vote? Do you think all those names like "Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck" can actually vote. You have to prove who you are before you can vote.

jj in NYC   October 15th, 2008 10:52 am ET

I am all for fair and free elections, but what I don't understand is why the Republican party (as well as the Bush era highly partisan Department of Justice) is spending all of its time and resources trying to keep people from voting and none trying to PROTECT THE VOTE, ensure the integrity of the electronic machines, and/or enforcing the provisions of HAVA (aka Help America Vote Act).

When was the last time you saw any Republican organization trying to be pro-franchise and/or participating in voter protection. If nothing else, at least the Democrats and Obamacrats are trying to get people to engage as citizens. Pro-Democracy and Pro-Obama

ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES OF INCITEMENT AND REP. LEWIS’S WARNING

Rep. Lewis's statement is clear about what he wanted to accomplish–that McCain's campaign rallies not continue to incite the crowd to hatred with a prospect of creating social unrest and schism. That is a timely warning, McCain's self-righteous indignation notwithstanding. Lewis simply stated the truth which many in the McCain camp (and some in the media) may not want to hear; but it is a statement of wisdom. He said: “George Wallace never threw a bomb. He never fired a gun, but he created the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans who were simply trying to exercise their constitutional rights." Lewis’s concern was about “creating an atmosphere of hatred.” He was not saying that McCain was doing many of the nasty things that Wallace did in his life. No objective observer would dispute the fact that hatred was being stirred at McCain-Palin rallies by words—words by some supporters and by the candidates themselves. In Western European democratic systems, McCain and Palin and Co. open themselves up for a charge of incitement to hatred. What would they say for their defense should any danger or harm result from the way they have been conducting this campaign? That is why Lewis warned that McCain and Palin and handlers are playing with fire! If harm should result it likely will lead to incalculable social harm or rupture. No responsible citizen wants that!

Christopher Buckley, a staunch conservative, the son of the founder of the National Review has resigned from the paper and endorsed Sen. Obama, that says a lot. It also reaffirms, that Sen. Obama does and has and will continue to work across party lines. This is a big deal Sen. My mother who has been declared legally incompitant is allowed to vote under NH law . Yup , that's right . Because of a stroke she now rarely knows what day it is , but according to nursing home director she is legally allowed to vote as "long as she doesn't have a guardian". I find it amazing that with all this discussion concerning illegal registration that no one considers this to be a problem . Let's us all remember Gore and what was done to him and we all would be if we had fought for him and fought the justice system.

SC BLUE   October 15th, 2008 10:47 am ET

if your name is REMOVED from the list, PURGED, as the Republicans are fighting for, then it won't matter how much ID you have..your name won't be there as a REGISTERED voter.

grahame   October 15th, 2008 10:46 am ET

Ah Susie what are you smoking.
Perhaps if you had gotten out of the fourth grade you would be more intelligent about the electorate process. When PT Barnham said "There's one born every minute." He was referring to Republicans who arej ust Aabunch of uneducated morons anyway. Bet you don't even know where your county line is.

Nimi from NY   October 15th, 2008 10:46 am ET

What else is new. They can verify them as much as they want the results will still be the same. The courts have spoken. Soon it will be time for the people to speak. And it will be loud and clear what they want:change.

Baleful   October 15th, 2008 10:46 am ET

I have to verify my identity when I cast my vote at my polling place – They check my ID and name and cross it off of the voter list. One me – one vote.

Why is this such a big deal?

P..S Registration is the Pre-step to voting , fellow citizens – not an actual vote

Registration Fraud and Voter Fraud are Very, very different. Much like registering your car does not give you a license to drive.

Holy Civics 101, Batman.

Dwoods   October 15th, 2008 10:45 am ET

ACORN should be investigated for false registration. We don't need to have people breaking the law and falsifying documents. When this happens all of America suffers. If you have the right to vote, then do so. Some states don't allow people who are currently on probation or parole to not vote. Know your rights and do things right. If you are not sure call your city or county official.

Steven   October 15th, 2008 10:45 am ET

Of course there should be verification but I feel like this is an 11th hour scheme by the Republicans to narrow margins. How many good American people will be refused the right to vote?

Independent   October 15th, 2008 10:45 am ET

I expect full court pursuit by the democrats if there is any voter fraud. This is the same nonsense I have seen the years before where smokescreen is pushed around while real voter fraud occures (Karl rove was the champion of this game). Democrats are always too nice to go after republicans on this issue (one of the reasons I am an independent).

If Republicans can be outraged by voter registration fraud then Democrats should be MAD AS ALL HEll about "actual voter fraud". And they SHOULD act.

Biff   October 15th, 2008 10:45 am ET

If "mickey mouse" is registered to vote....

DO YOU THINK HE WILL SHOW UP AND VOTE OBAMA??

What is the composition of the 16 members sitting in the 6th Circuit? 9 Republicans maybe? Figures.

Annette   October 15th, 2008 10:44 am ET

The repubs, are scared, and they don't care about average folks, they want the White House, regardless of the mess they help create with their party in power. They simply don't care. Everyone in Ohio should go register if possible, and re-register if possible,Go to their local election board and make sure their name is on the roll. THE FOLKS IN OHIO SHOULD NOT TAKE FOR GRANTED THAT THEIR NAMES ARE ON THE ROLLS FOR REGISTERING...CITIZENS IN OHIO NEED TO MAKE SURE THEIR NAMES ARE T HERE. Every person in Ohio should make sure they accounted for, RIGHT NOW! Because this looks likes things want to get messy, and we don't need a repeat of 2004.

Rick CT   October 15th, 2008 10:44 am ET

This is as it should. ACORN should not be have people submitting 73 voter registration forms and get away with it. As for voter fraud being just a Rep issue, that's pure bunk. Anyone watching the recount fraud in FL saw the bias of the 2 Dem counters vs the 1 Rep counter. and what about the Gov fiasco in Washington state where the Dem won on the 3rd recount by 10 votes despite the fact that there were more votes than registered voters in some heavily Dem districts. No, it goes both ways.

To make voting legit, safegaurds have to be in place to ensure that only eligible voters (those that are actually alive, etc) are permitted to vote.

The repugs are going to make every attempt to link this to Obama in yet another pathetic failed attempt to bring the man down.
If you can't campaign on the issues or your record you can ride a wave of attacks on your opponent into office.
This is the campaign strategy of John McCain.
This is the campaign strategy of The RNC/GOP
This is the campaign strategy of a predetermined LOSER!
Obama has already issued a response, but it will be interesting to see how the piranahs of GOP will act, as they consider this "red meat"

Donkey Party   October 15th, 2008 10:44 am ET

And let's be clear her folks, ACORN caught the irregularities and turned themselves in, this isn't some smoking gun as the Repukes try to spin it.

Amit   October 15th, 2008 10:44 am ET

People, voter registration fraud is not voter fraud!

First of all, groups like ACORN are, in most states, REQUIRED BY STATE LAW TO TURN IN EVERY FORM THEY COLLECT, so the ELECTION OFFICIALS can verify the validity of them.

Second of all, if someone submits a form for Mickey Mouse and Mickey Mouse actually gets registered, guess what! Mickey Mouse will still be a cartoon on November 4th and will not turn up to cast a fraudulent vote. Furthermore, the chance of Mickey Mouse getting registered is VERY SMALL, if not non-existent, because these groups that run voter registration drives will turn in the POTENTIALLY INVALID forms TAGGED as forms that have problems so election officials have an easier time weeding them out (I've done voter registration drives in the past).

Tim   October 15th, 2008 10:43 am ET

I don't understand why this is only happening in Ohio. All voter registrations should be verified. Not just new ones. There was an incident with ACORN registering deceased voters. if that's not enough of a warning flag for all to be verified, I don't know what is. All voters should have to personally register before a presidential election with proper proof of who they are. Something this important shouldn't be left to a trust factor. There are some very unscrupulous people out there willing to do whatever it takes to get their candidate elected.

Eight Is Truly Enough   October 15th, 2008 10:43 am ET

I have no problem with this at all. I want Sen. Obama's ascent to the presidency to be indisputable by the whine and lies of the Republicans. I want them to get beat fair and square with every underhanded dirty trick they've tried to pull to slap them in their faces.

Former Republican   October 15th, 2008 10:43 am ET

Here we go – the Republicans used Katherine Harris to steal the 2000 election , and they are positioining themselves to do so again. Once again the GOP is using a term to describe their actions that is in direct contradiction to what they are actually doing, in this case covering their efforts to suppress votes with a call for "transparency". Notice how many of their challenges are/will be in areas that are favored for Obama, and none in McCain areas, just like previous elections. They do not care about fairness ot transparency (this administration has proven they abhor transparency) they only care about winning at all costs. The GOP has become the epitome of low, dirty politics – just ask conservative talking heads like Christopher Buckley, Kathleen Parker, David Brooks, George Will, David Frum, etc. etc.

Joe Sixpack   October 15th, 2008 10:43 am ET

Now the GOP needs to do the same in Georgia where the dems are going after prisoners and everyone who has no right to vote.

Jean   October 15th, 2008 10:43 am ET

So... DID Obama really beat Senator Clinton in the primaries?

Or did Obama just have enough 'votes' (which could have come from the same source)?

And is the same thing going on right now with the polls? Are legitimate voters being called or fronters for these fraud registrations?

Makes the whole political process a mockery.

Natasha/Ohio Democrat   October 15th, 2008 10:43 am ET

This is sooooooo not going to help the Republican's regardless. There will be no vote to have fraud regardless of the registration. That has been happening for years. I will like to have an investigate into the ELECTION of 2004 for the verification of the people who vote for BUSH. HELL, let investigate the last two election for Bush. Every vote has to be verified if the person was alive or dead. So if there are vote application incomplete, there's still enough completed applications to WHIP MCCAIN out of here.

Mike in Columbus   October 15th, 2008 10:42 am ET

Something about FL in 2000 seems to come to mind as I read this... what happened there again?...

err no the media i think, and fraud... anything but "our" fault...

REG in AZ   October 15th, 2008 10:42 am ET

It really is simply all about honesty, about who can we trust. Looking at everything today it is literally too important to just follow old prejudices, biases and/or emotional attachments or to allow ourselves to be manipulated by subterfuge. Each of us has to be disciplined to be objective, rational and conscience driven to decide who we can trust to turn things around, to honestly change things. Even Bush’s actions indicate that he knows his policies have failed and that change is desperately needed. Each candidate says they will change everything and resolve the problems but we really can’t depend on what they say, whether it be about what they will do or how they criticize their opponent. Is it Obama-Biden or McCain-Palin who destroys their own credibility by depending on falsely slandering their opponent? Has Sarah Palin impressed that we can trust anything she says or just that she will say anything without any conscience? Has John McCain demonstrated that he is sincere and has he been consistent or does he constantly change positions and does his history of strong commitment to the Bush-Cheney/Republican policies that so greatly contributed to today’s problems just make him very questionable? Has Senator Biden been consistent in his career and does he seem to be consistent and truthful now? Throughout the primaries and the presidential campaign has Barack Obama stayed consistent and maintained a constant quality and the same level headed presentations that would encourage trust? All of the garbage that is being thrown around is distracting but the reality is that the real person we each have to be honest with is ourselves. To fail to see and act on the truth will only leave us at fault and then with more of the same or even worse.

Amazing how a group of street thugs and hustlers with the help of a few liberal lawyer types and donations from a low life Chicago politician can form a group like ACORN. Under the guise of working for the disenfranchised, poor jobless minority they have been able to pollute the voter registration system in a number of States.
With Obama, and his socialist, liberal side kicks, Soros in particular ,the election and America is fast becoming Third World. The only thing missing and yet to come are the machetes in the hands of his supporters hacking the opposition to death should he lose at the polls.
This is a no win election for America. If Obama wins his homies take over. If he loses they'll cry foul and inundate the court systems with suits and allegations of voter fraud. Failing in that they will resort to the every popular burning and looting under the guise of the Gore and Kerry mantra, "We was robbed!"

Roofin Reality, Houston, Tx.   October 15th, 2008 10:40 am ET

I'm voting Democrat for President this election if for no other reason than I'm just flat out flabberasted at what has taken place over the last 8 years (6 of which were under total Republican rule).
Costly and unnecessary (in lives and money) war
Torture (memo comes out today that White House was aware and approved)
Katrina debacle
Loss of freedom
Market meltdown (if a CEO took a surplus and ran a deficit, they'd be out in 6 months, not 8 years)
So, when I look at the Dems and Reps, I see a new candidate for the job cut from a similar mold as the previous. I know the evils (not really evil, but trying to make a point her) and I'd rather take the unknown blessings that stand around the corner because I have faith.

Look, I don't want people double voting, or voting in one place, and move to another city and vote there also. I simply want a fair (no extra votes AND no voter suppression) election. If we get that, I'm confident that the person we now need will win.

Donkey Party   October 15th, 2008 10:40 am ET

These frauds are the Repubs themselves who are out in force to muddy the waters of the election process by sending their minions to submit these phoney ballots and registration cards. Do people really think Democrats or the Obama campaign would be stupid enough to use names like Mickey Mouse or Bullwinkle J. Moose? Just when you think the RepubliCONS can't sink any lower, they just keep digging deeper under the rocks they huddle under.

Team America   October 15th, 2008 10:40 am ET

JOSH- Well said!! Can't argue with facts. This Obama character has 3 years in Washington and we're supposed to think he's experienced enough to handle being President? He has zero experience in military matters and we're in two wars. I'll admit John McCain isn't the best Republican candidate, but he's way more knowledgeable and ready to lead on day 1. We don't know anything about Obama, and I cannot vote for a guy I have servere doubts about. Bill, Hillary, Biden all said this guy was not ready to be President. 3 years just doesn't cut it.

SO WHAT!
A piece of paper does not vote! People do. So when an individual gets to the voting station if they don't match the registration paper then they don't get to vote. So therefore this is just another McCain/Palin piece of distracting nonsense.

A PIECE OF PAPER DOES NOT VOTE. PEOPLE DO.

RDS   October 15th, 2008 10:38 am ET

They know that 2 or 3 days is not enough time to go through and verify over 600,000 newly registered voters. The GOP has been filing lawsuit after lawsuit after lawsuit to get eligible voters purged from the roles. This is more prevelant than voter registration fraud and voter fraud (which by the way has never be prosecuted in a court of law). This is how the effectively fix elections before voting even starts. I would advise the democrats to get on their job.

Vincent, Great Lakes, IL   October 15th, 2008 10:37 am ET

There is no where else to post this.

I am a life-long Republican who supported McCain over Bush eight years ago.

When I first heard about Troopergate, I understood that it was a tempest-in-a-teacup compared to world issues such as the economy and national security. I understood that it might, at the very worst, result in a slap on the wrist for Gov. Palin if the allegations were found to be true.

I was not prepared for her response to the legislature's investigative report.

When Bill Clinton said "I did not have sexual relations with that woman," we were outraged. We pointed out that it was not about sex, it was about honesty.

When Gov. Palin claimed the Branchflower report "vindicated" her and that she had been "cleared of any legal wrongdoing ... any hint of any kind of unethical activity," I was outraged. That is not spin. That is nothing less than an outright, bold-faced lie.

Troopergate was not about whether trooper Wooten is a bad employee or whether he was adequately punished. It is about whether this governor, who wants to be our vice president, will tell us the truth. To me, character and honesty are more important than party loyalty.

Super D   October 15th, 2008 10:37 am ET

While this is a good idea. I am afraid that ACORN has done so much damage that almost any result in any state they were active could be disputed. Don't expect a winner declared Nov 4th.

Obama's a cheater folks. these ACORN people are commiting voter fraud in his name.

I hope McCain nails ACORN to Obama's forehead for all to see.

Texun   October 15th, 2008 10:37 am ET

This move is part of a Republican nationwide strategy–to mount legal challenges to offset defeats at the polls. They have laid the groundwork for it in many states, focussing initially on the registration process. Now they are claiming that they need an army of poll watchers to head off fraudulent pro-Obama voting. The poll watchers will have been prepped to deliver "evidence" of fraud. Since they can't win at the ballot box, Republicans are preparing to win in court. It worked in 2000.

chuck   October 15th, 2008 10:37 am ET

The Repuglicans are desperate America. They are going to do everything that they can to get this election. ....this whole Acorn Thing has been dragging around here for well over a month. Does the Federal Election Commission have any teeth? Screwed up voting machines in some states.....old news..Acorn and its Obama ("I don't know nothin about it") underhanded "voter registration activity"......hell, have the Supreme beings on the Supreme Court STEP INTO AN ISSUE BEFORE THE VOTE.....wouldn't that be novel?! Pull in Acorn's registration activity in all the states in which they "operate," have those records reviewed, and determine whether these folks are truly registered to vote....and please include those who may be found in cemeteries....IF NECESSARY, MOVE UP THE ELECTION DATE....i am serious, our elections are getting to be very, very Latin America-esque, aren't they?

Noah   October 15th, 2008 10:33 am ET

You Liberals are crazy. You are actually trying to argue that we should not take very basic steps to identify voters? Something as simple as showing a picture ID? Who could possibly be against that? Only people who know they need to fix elections to win. Voter fraud is always 100% Democrat voters. You guys are dispecable

Here is the 'Real Change' that Obama is talking about. Should we pull out of Chicago ? Perhaps the U.S. should pull out of Chicago ? Body count: In the last six months 292 killed (murdered) in Chicago 221 killed in Iraq . Sens. Barack Obama & Dick Durbin, Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., Gov. Rod Blogojevich, House leader Mike Madigan, Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan (daughter of Mike), Mayor Richard M. Daley (son of Mayor Richard J. Daley) Guess what ALL our leadership in Illinois ......all Democrats. Thank you for the combat zone in Chicago . Of course, they're all blaming each other. Can't blame Republicans; they're aren't any! State pension fund $44 Billion in debt, worst in country. Cook County ( Chicago ) sales tax 10.25% highest in country. (Look 'em up if You want). Chicago school system rated one of the worst in the country. This is the political culture that Obama comes from in Illinois . And he's gonna 'fix' Washington politics for us!!!???? SURE!!!!!

good ruling. I mean really, who would argue against NOT verifiying new registrants / voters?

RIGHT WAY FOR AMERICA   October 15th, 2008 10:28 am ET

NOTE TO ALL.
Annenberg says a close look at the record reveals that Obama has "voted consistently to restore higher tax rates on upper-income taxpayers but not on middle- or low-income workers."

Verdict:
Misleading. McCain's summary ignores the fact that some of the votes were for measures to lower taxes for many Americans, while increasing them for a much smaller number of taxpayers. A nonpartisan examination also finds that the 94 total includes multiple votes on the same measures and budget votes that would not directly lead to higher taxes.

It's my understanding and correct me if I wrong, but once voter registration cards are turned over to the registrar of voters in each town, it is their responsibility(dems and repubs) to verify the information. This is how it's done in Ct and we have few problems. Why is it that Fl and Ohio always have this problem with voting?

That one is Karl Marxs friend too   October 15th, 2008 10:26 am ET

Puh-lease. Republicans invented voter fraud. If you look at the history of problems, it sure isn't the dems that are the ones we need to watch.
