From

HEMPSTEAD, New York (CNN) - Took him longer than expected, but McCain did go the William Ayers route, but then segued into one of Obama's campaign trail lines. People don't care about William Ayers, they care about the economy.

Yeah...I'm excited!!! I think John McCain stepped up to the plate and stood his ground! Homerun Johnny!

Marylou   October 15th, 2008 9:53 pm ET

thanks Candy..YOU BETCHA..we want FACTS and ISSUES..not the ramblings of this old man

sherry   October 15th, 2008 9:53 pm ET

alot of obama lovers posting here, all the real mccain fans are watching him own obama.... time to get smart and watch the debate and not wine

Rebecca   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

He's nit-picking and focusing on minutia– it's truly exhausting to watch. Very unfortunate for the republican party.

Vicki   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

No one cares about ayers. McCain can keep hounding on that all he wants as he watches his ratings go down the tube. C'mon talk about somethign that matters for a change. And for heaven sakes, quit making those smirks and faces – that will NOT endear you to the AMerical public.

The Patriot   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

John McCain thinks his V.P. is "a BREAST of fresh air" too...funny. Please don't do this to us America!!!!!!

Michael B   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Who cares what Obama thinks of Ayers? I want to know what Ayers saw in Obama.

teddy   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

it's amazing how the only campaign that commended obama is when he accepted the nomination as the democratic presidential candidate on the day of martin luther king jr when he gave his speech, saying congratulations...and that was it

Snickers   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Took him longer because he's old and tired–his senior moments got in the way of getting to Ayers. Pointless.

OBAMA/BIDEN '08

Rich H   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Cindy, you are right. I don't care about Ayers. I care about keeping more of my tax dollars regardless of my income. And I care about government cutting spending not trying to "spread the wealth"

Jeannie   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Thank you Candy and thank you Wes I love your comment!!!!!!!!!!!

Tim in Syracuse   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

And when it was plainly explained McCain went on to a completely different topic. He sounds like my uncle with dementia.

Anonymous   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

dee   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

when you have nothing of substance to say just attack mcain's motto

wow   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Barack looks so calm and unshakeable while McCain looks shaky and angry. I am having a hard time listening to McCain because his behavior is really strange. tense.

Jay   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Does McCain know anything else. he doesn't know anything that my family needs.

TexasVet   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

McCain is acting like a complete goofball. Did he take some pills before he went on stage?

JWR   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Why does he keep saying the campaign was born in Ayres living room. IT WAS NOT give that lie up and come up with something real or give it up!!!

Adam   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Jeez Candy, make up your mind. A second ago you were saying it was a missed opportunity that he didn't bring up Ayers and now you're saying he should focus on the economy. Good thing you're not his debate coach.

kenbob   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Candy,

You just don't get it. America doens't want to hear about Ayers. We want to hear about the issues. And we want the media to focus on the issues.

damian   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

mccain is smug and constantly interupts. if he is this arrogant with an American senator, imagine how smug he will be with foreign leaders. he has no tact.

Doc G   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Would McCain's anger and temper influence his policies? Hmmmmm. I say yes, that's why I'm not voting for him

Dr. Roy   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Not from what I hear among folks. They are looking at reputation. They are looking for a reason to like or not like a candidate.

Kisha   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

I loved Obama's answer, and I hope everyone will not shut up about Ayers and get back to the economy.

Smarter than the GOP   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Obama spanked McCain on that

Andrea E-Atlanta   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Exactly Candy. Is Bill Ayers going to help pay my mortgage or help put gas in my car. I think not.

DJ   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Oil has almost nothing to do with power production! Nukes don't solve our dependency problem!

Fuel-efficient cars!

McCain is still stump spewing – drilling won't see any benefits until 2030!!

C   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Boring...

Accountant Guy   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

McBush is all over the place and Obama is wiping the floor with him!! Great job President Obama, you are calm collected and actually answering the questions!!

Obama/Biden '08

Adrienne   October 15th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

McCain looks small... lashing out at Obama... every question. Obama is the grown up... again! Why is McCain so petty?

Barbara - 65 yr old white female in NC   October 15th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

Obama won't throw the first punch

But he will certainly throw the last.

Obama/Biden '08 – No more wars for oil

Portland, Maine   October 15th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

Obama was 8 when Ayers did what he did. 8!!!!!!!! This is such a none issue....but of course the MSM and CNN need to keep bringing it up along with the McCain Campaign.

American Voters: What happened when you were 8?? Are you responsible for it? I don't think so...

aaron   October 15th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

CNN keeps turning off coments when so many start supporting obama, cant get in mccain remarks, obama is talking same ol same ol, i wonder who is holding his queue cards, mccain is bringing up very prudent issues

No Hillary = No Obama   October 15th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

The problem is the way this issue is framed. No one cares about Bill Ayers probably except Bill Ayers.

Lee   October 15th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

I am an American female. Sarah Palin is not now nor will ever be a role model for how I live my life. If anything, she's the Anti-Role Model.

common sense   October 15th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

you're known by the people that you keep

Jay   October 15th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

Mccain – SCARY

Achille Salesh   October 15th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

Mc Cain is very out of touch.
People don't care about Ayers.
They care about their pochet.

Look how many people have killed them selves because of this economic crisis ?

Nobody talk about Ayers.

Mc Cain=Mc PAIN.

Palin his so stupid I could never vote for ever.
Did she know that Barack was 8 when Ayers bombed the country ?

Ayers has'nt been repudiated by the nation. And why Palin think Ayers can't afford to be redemed ?

This a country that should replace Mc Cain in the office he's incapable to continues ?

The nation will all die with palin the second day of her presidency.

Amazing vice president.

dee   October 15th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

mcain is choking

Sean   October 15th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

He lit a fire..then doused it!! He missed his opportunity

emilyb   October 15th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

John McCain spoke at an ACORN rally in 2006….Let's look into that if we are going to point fingers at who has supported things that in retrospect they probably shouldn't have….

Jason in Juneau   October 15th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

Obama made everything clear. Mc Cain keeps falling back on his stump speech.

Cynthia   October 15th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

McCain is desperate if all he has to talk about is dirt on Obama. President Obama!!!

Rebecca   October 15th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

McCain is proving he's reactive– thoroughly unpresidential

Ryan   October 15th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

McCain is trying too hard to make this a "campaign changer". He's interrupting and reaching and playing right into Obama's hands. Isn't he supposed to be trying to look less erratic?

Charles   October 15th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

Really is McCain seeming calm and steady to anyone? Anyone?

sea   October 15th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

wow... why cant he stick to what his people tell him to do?

Edward in Fort Worth,Tx   October 15th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

I cant find a JOB. I dont care about Ayers. Unreal Mr. McCain.

Lily   October 15th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

i dont care about AYERS!!!

NATE   October 15th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

the squiggly line dropped like a rock when Ayers came up...

R. Squibbs   October 15th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

McCain really fumbled that one. He just looks old and mean and crabby.

Game over.

California Democrat   October 15th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

That's correct. Obama blunted that question...

franknitty41   October 15th, 2008 9:50 pm ET

It's the economy maaaaaaaaaannnnnnnn!

ines   October 15th, 2008 9:50 pm ET

Distractions, Distractions, Distractions.

McCain is avoiding discussion about the economy.

Lorraine   October 15th, 2008 9:50 pm ET

McCain came off as a bitter man..his 'gotcha" moment fell flat

Kris K in RM CA   October 15th, 2008 9:50 pm ET

No one but McCain care about this topic and he lost. No one cares and he look and sounded like a old fool.

Nancy   October 15th, 2008 9:50 pm ET

Obama handled these questions in a very calm, intelligent way. He acts far more presidential than McCain. McCain looks hot headed and ready to blow.

EVN   October 15th, 2008 9:50 pm ET

McCain Got Owned on that one!
no one cares about Bill Ayers Old Man! get over it!

Kim   October 15th, 2008 9:50 pm ET

He did indeed go there, but he was prompted. However, I think I hear the sound of the McCain campaign taking it's last breath.

Chan   October 15th, 2008 9:50 pm ET

Who cares about William Ayers? Obama did not sit on this board with alone. There were others including Republicans.

Disappointed Republican   October 15th, 2008 9:50 pm ET

McCain looked very sad in his attempt to go there. It was a loss for Senator McCain/

Rob R   October 15th, 2008 9:50 pm ET

Obama schooled McCain.

karin   October 15th, 2008 9:50 pm ET

mccain is scaring me. he seems jerky and his eyes are wild and he keeps repeating himself in memorized statements. he looks pardon my language insane.

Stacy from Loudoun County VA   October 15th, 2008 9:50 pm ET

Candy, he went there...Senator Obama cleared the air...what is he going to talk about for three weeks now?

DAVE IN CA   October 15th, 2008 9:50 pm ET

amen, and of course obama lies.... that is all that needs to be said...

Wes   October 15th, 2008 9:49 pm ET

I am so sick of this issue coming up. It simply shows that McCain knows he can't win based on policy and feels the need to campaign on fear. When Obama is allowed to speak, he is very articulate and clear in explaining that Bill Ayers is NOT a close friend or adviser. The issue only comes up when McCain says we need the "facts" by which he means to deny that Obama knows what goes on in his own life.
