Obama takes heat for delaying World Series game

A 30-minute Obama ad will delay a game 6 of the World Series.

A 30-minute Obama ad will delay a game 6 of the World Series.

(CNN) - The Republican National Committee took aim at Barack Obama Wednesday over the Illinois senator's half-hour ad buy that will delay the start of a World Series game by 18 minutes.

"It’s unfortunate that the World Series’ first pitch is being delayed for Obama’s political pitch," RNC spokesman Alex Conant said. "Not only is Obama putting politics before principle, he’s putting it before our national pastime.”

Major League Baseball has agreed to a request from Fox to delay the start time of Game 6 of the World Series (if a Game 6 is necessary) so the network can air the 30-minute Obama spot, a Fox spokesman confirms to CNN. The Illinois senator has also bought similar time on CBS and NBC, set to begin at 8 p.m.

“FOX will accommodate Senator Obama's desire to communicate with voters in this...format," Fox spokesman Scott Gorgin said. "We are pleased that Major League Baseball has agreed to delay the first pitch of World Series Game 6 for a few minutes in order for FOX to carry his program on October 29."

It's the first time a presidential candidate has bought that length of airtime on network television since Ross Perot purchased several 30 minute blocs in 1992.

"This is a big platform, this is a big megaphone, the interest level is clearly there and people will watch," Evan Tracey of Campaign Media Analysis Group, CNN's consultant on campaign advertising said.

The October 29 game will now start at 8:38 instead of 8:20.

    RNC moronically grasping at straws! How pathetic can they get.
    Once again way off point, It's The ECONOMY!

    The last resort of all Failing Republican Campaigns is to energize the base, Ignorant Right Wing Looneys! Republicans are waking up from a long peaceful Bush slumber [Ouch!], to find two pathetic morons [McCain/Palin], publicly displaying a comical megalomaniac love affair with themselves, out of touch with our Nations true issues [it's the ECONOMY!], and engaging in a revolting "McCain First" campaign! That's a tough wake up call, "MY FRIENDS"!
    The McCain inept solution is a Slang Talking Power Hungry Junk Yard Dog [Awaiting Criminal Indictment] scampering around the Nation drumming up Racist Bigotry [Wink Wink]. The obvious erratic incompetence of the McCain/Palin campaign provides us evidence enough that they are unfit for any public office. As Americans face the hardest financial disaster in the History of the USA, this is McCain Policy of Change/Solutions/Answers! John McCain / Sarah Palin have no idea what Americans trying to survive face. 401K plans gutted, Unemployment, Foreclosures, Wall Street in the Tank, and the Global Economy in disarray...
    McCain/Palin are a disgusting self serving disgrace. Clearly proving they are not up to the complex task of keeping the Nation together in hard times.

    P.S. McCain's colossal arrogance will cost him Arizona in this Election!

    Why is this news? Does the RNC seriously think there will be voters who decide to not vote for Obama or to vote for McCain because the World Series might be delayed 15 minutes? I We have other issues that should take priority here!

    And even if people do believe this is actual news, how about "blaming" Fox for buying the 30 minute time slot, knowing that the World Series might be playing? Shouldn't the network be held more accountable for this gaff?

    This from people who flaunted "Hockey Mom" at the Flyers game which was no doubt delayed from it's normal start time to pay homage to her down home charm and outright lies. LOL

    Wow!! we are about to decide who is going to be the next President of the United States of America and we are upset about 15 minutes of a game that may not even take place. Maybe this is why we are in the situtation we are in now. Wake up America!!!

    aw get over it already! You are just sorry you didn't come up with the idea first.....like most of your ideas you have had to either copy them from Obama or whine about it! I wish the voting was over with already and all this nastiness can just go away. I am so turned off the republican party at this stage that I can't imagine EVER voting another republican into any form of government. How very sad that this party has had to spew such negativity and hatred.

    Shows what the McCain thinks is more important...a world series game instead of the future of this country. Get over it, and get your priorities straight. No wonder McCain is behind......Obama wants to talk to the American people, and we want to hear him.

    Baseball = national (American) pasttime
    Obama = anti-baseball
    Therefore, Obama = anti-American

    HA! The Repubs are getting ridiculous. And it's not like Obama's asking them to CANCEL the game, he's asking them to POSTPONE it. FIFTEEN WHOLE MINUTES. A game that may not even happen.
    Keep grasping at straws, Repubs, Nov. 4th is almost here and we won't have to listen to you anymore.

    Oh get over yourself RNC. You are grasping at everything aren;t you? You're just mad you didn't think about it yourself. But you know what, even if you did, the country would be booing you guys bc we are sick or all your negativity and we actually welcome Obama's uplifting guidance that will lead us out of the mess that you have put us in. So take you RNC group and your leader (whoever that may be at this point) and go home. We don't want to hear anythign that any of you are saying and we have tuned you out until after Nov 4th.

    Always glad to see the RNC recognizes the important issues to jump on.

    To Hell with the economy, health care or security. Let's find every distraction we can to argue about instead.

    Hahah..... AS IF... the RNC would not pull a similar move. It's like the teapot calling the kettle black. Puhlease!!!!! Maybe it's because Obama is an Arab and he does not care about our national pasttime or... is he a terrorist?

    A presidential address from our next president!!! Can't wait to hear it. Don't forget to get out there and vote all you Obama supporters, the gains in the polls are nothing if we don't get out there and show them we mean business when we say we want change.

    Wow, why didn't FOX just say no to running Obama's TV show????

    Fox can just say no, we can't run your 30 minute segment. Right? Sure. So, Obama isn't forcing anyone to delay the game. Fox wants Obama's money, and Baseball wants Fox's money. See how capitalism works? Republicans need to learn about markets and how they work.
