Trump says that Bush got the US into a war with Iraq using lies.

(CNN) – Business mogul Donald Trump told CNN Wednesday House Speaker Nancy Pelosi should have sought to impeach President Bush when she had the chance.

In an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, Trump said the president and his administration deliberately lied about the Iraq war, and congressional Democrats missed an opportunity to impeach him when the party took control of Congress in 2006.

Watch the full interview on The Situation Room at 4 and 6 p.m. ET.

"I was surprised that she didn't do more in terms of Bush and going after Bush," Trump said. "It was almost — it just seemed like she was going to really look to impeach Bush and get him out of office, which personally I think would have been a wonderful thing."

Pressed why he feels Bush deserved the punishment faced by only two other commanders-in-chief, Trump said the president misled the country in the run-up to the Iraq war, and that his actions were considerably more objectionable than those which led to the impeachment of former President Bill Clinton.

"He lied. He got us into the war with lies," Trump said. And I mean — look at the trouble Bill Clinton got into with something that was totally unimportant. And they tried to impeach him, which was nonsense. And yet Bush got us into this horrible war with lies, by lying, by saying they had weapons of mass destruction, by saying all sorts of things that turned out not to be true."

In the wide-ranging interview set to air on CNN's The Situation Room at 4 and 6 p.m. Wednesday, Trump also praised John McCain and said the Arizona senator still has a chance to win the White House despite recent polls showing he is substantially trailing Barack Obama.

Watch: I'd hire McCain, says Trump

"He's a very smart guy, he's a tough guy," he said. "I think he'd be a great president. But, he has to be John McCain and he could still probably pull it out. But, it's going to be tough."

Trump also advised the Republican presidential nominee to stay positive at Wednesday's final presidential debate and communicate clear plans to fix the nation's financial crisis.

"He has to come up with plans and not political plans, real plans. And they have to be very, very economy-based," Trump said. " I think the economy seems to be weighing down everything."

Trump praised Republican VP Sarah Palin, whom he first met Tuesday night at a New York fundraiser, and said he would trust her to run the economy.

"I can only go by the people of Alaska," she said. "She's got the highest rating in the whole Unites States, as being the most popular governor."

Man in the street interviews are useless enough, but they're better than man in the suite interviews.

CNN spends waaay too much air time and waaay too many words on rich right-wing blowhards like Trump, T. Boone Pickens, etc. They're great at making money, but their political opinions are more about self-interest than the interests of the country.

Sue   October 15th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

When Palin loses this election, she can go to work for Trump, since he thinks she is so great! I wonder how long she would last actually working for him????

JM   October 15th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

Ain't that the truth? I can't believe everyone just looks the other way when this idiot (our president) makes ridiculous decisions that will impact the country and countless Americans for generations (wage a war in the wrong country killing thousands, not pursue/capture bin Ladin, allow the economy to crash w/o regulating Wall Street, allow the subprime mortgage mess to continue until it takes the country down with it). What does he have to do to get impeached?? These idiots went after Clinton for perjuring himself in court and Bush can trash the entire country w/o repercussions?? Incredible.

I may be GOP but I, too, wanted the neo-con Bush impeached. Cheney, too. The neo-cons have hijacked the GOP and it no longer resembles what it stood for (time to search out a viable third party). The takeover was completed with George H.W. Bush when he ascended to the presidency. He would have never been Reagan's VP (since he disliked him) if not for the fact Reagan was strongarmed by Kissinger and Conkrite (you won't read that in a history book or the news).

He's right about Sarah Palin–

Sarah is so much more accomplished than her critics—Mayor, Governor with the highest approval rating in the U.S., Member of the Alaskan Energy and Conservation Board, all by the age of 44 and all while raising 5 kids.

Let's hear from all of you Olbermann, Matthews and Madow lovers out there about your accomplishments.

Lyz in MD   October 15th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

Of course Trump supports McCain— he is one of the very few Americans whose interests are served by McCain's proposed tax policy. The guy is an absolutely textbook example of narcissistic personality disorder, so it's not surprising has no empathy for people who are not going to benefit from that Bush tax policies that McSame wants to continue.

I think he knows that the Republican party is morally bankrupt. I thinkhe knows that Sarah Palin is a dangerously unqualified moron. I think he knows trickle down economics is a crock, (the problem being that down is not the direction that money tends to flow, and the proof being in the fact that it has been tried many times and consistently failed to work as advertised). However, Trump is too narcissistic to care what happens to the country if there's a profit in it for him. .

Alice   October 15th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

It doesn't matter at this point how or why we went to war. It is a bit late for all that… The fact is now we need to win this war and securing the area and keeping terrorist at bay. I don't think you can compare McCain to Bush no more than you could compare Lincoln to Bush. I do feel Obama will make the economy worse. I do think Palin will do well but I wish the Liberals would stop this Bad Bashing and making movies about Palin and making this the fiflthiest campaign I have ever seen. My 12 year old is watching the news and debate and I am now having to screen what he sees because of the news media reporting all the trash, Yeah right go Liberals you and acorn are doing a great job.

If Trump wants Bush impeached and yet feels Palin is qualified to run the country, he's clearly trying to "score" with her, like most other men who are polled on their feelings about Gov. Palin

I don't get it   October 15th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

I think the Donald must be losing it. He needs to look at politifact.com. McBush and his dingbat have said so many "pants on fire" lies about Barack it isn't funny. Mr. Trump was concerned over bush lies?!! I think McBush is someone that could never be trusted and the same goes for his dingbat sidekick. They still tell the same lies even after they are exposes as lies. They are the lowest of the low.
And as far as McBush's dingbat goes - I'm sure if she were on the apprentice she would have been the first one fired (unless you needed to keep someone on the show to be the "sideshow" act for ratings - what stupid thing will she say next?).

Obama/Biden !!

matt in pittsburgh   October 15th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

And the Donald is someone we should listen to? Aside from going bankrupt multiple times and having a really stupid looking comb over, what are his legal qualifications to determine that Bush should have been impeached? Can Nancy Pelosi even spell that word?

By the way all you Gov. Palin haters - do you realize that she already has a higher level security clearance than does either Barack Ayers or Joe Windbag?

Deal with it.

and to the previous article - Jesse Jackson is just a race baiting, bigotted, extortionist. shame on him for his remarks and shame on any media forum that gave him the time of day for this speech.

j   October 15th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

I certainly think Bush/Cheney deserved impeachment and probably to be brought up on war crimes but Congress failed to act in any meaningful way. At any rate, it's all water under the bridge now. Bush/Cheney will be gone in January so might as well build a bridge and get over it. Move forward in a direction that brings back America's standing in the world, provide more focus to the backbone of America, and otherwise leave the Bush/Cheney years behind. Obama - Hope, Unity, Progressive Change.

Juanito, Seattle   October 15th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

If Trump had any brains he should realize the Pelosi congress has done nothing while its held the majority, except create more problems. McCain may be the leader America needs at this time, although I doubt he'll be able to accomplish much because of the problems he'd be tasked with. Obama is nothing more than a Pied Piper being followed by a bunch of star-struck airheads. He's no different than the other democrats who tried to sweet talk the people in the past two presidential elections. At least Gore has tried to do something constructive, Kerry hasn't done anything since.

Brennan, Seattle WA   October 15th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

And now he supports John McCain who wants to continue Bush's neo-con policies?

This guy once said that we should declare victory and pull all of our troops out of Iraq. He now supports John McCain who wants to leave our troops there as long as he possibly can.

Trump is obviously confused.

God forbid if she became VP, will we see the dood in the VP's office, the same way he used to be present when she conducted interviews in the governor's office." The dood helped write the state budget and has been involved in personnel matters, and has called lawmakers when he or his "Joe six pack" have disagreed with what they have done.

They ALL said Iraq was a threat and had terrorist ties (which they do, btw). They — Washington — the powers that be ALL AGREED because they ALL read the same intelligence reports. Good grief. It's not rocket science!!! And there are soundbites and printed quote to prove it. So get off the high horse of impeaching Bush and move on to more important things. RIDICULOUS.

He kinda looks like Joe Biden with a bad toupee.

Dave   October 15th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

She's only popular now, but when she gets back to Alaska she will probably be impeached for the ethics violations she is now guilty of when she gets back!

Jacqueline   October 15th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

Frankly, I could care less what Trump wants or thinks….he is just trying to get publicity for himself.

ooouch!   October 15th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

impeached? how about arrested!!!!!

Lu   October 15th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

"he would trust her to run the economy"
Ha ha ha ha haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

She must have charmed the sense out of him.

Steve   October 15th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Trump you and the rest of the world. He is the worst president that the United States has ever had. When he leaves office all of his atrocities will come to light. Him and his running buddy with the bad heart.

bk   October 15th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

he seems to be forgetting that McCain was beating that war drum harder than bush or chenney

Obama 08   October 15th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

Ha! Trump should have marched straight into the Oval Office, looked Bush straight in the eye, and said "You're Fired!"

Jaimey   October 15th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

I wish people would lay off of the 'impeach Bush' rhetoric and focus on the path forward - turning the White House blue again! By the time any kind of impeachment process were to go through, it's already January 2009 and Bush is just a bad memory. At this point impeachment is a symbolic thing and most people know what a horrible president he's been.

Viet Vet   October 15th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Duh, most of the USA wanted shrub impeached along with shooter.
That why the Dems supposedly took power (repubs words, not mine)
But Pelosi took it of the table- - Wonder what they got on her? In my humble opinion the whole government is corrupt. Somtbody has a hand in every pocket.

tsm   October 15th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Palin is an idiot and is a disgrace to all women. We can not afford to have this woman as second in command to this old man.

If McCain wins, we have 4 more years of BUSH.

Vote Obama 08

Mel B.   October 15th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Have Dick Cheny for VP….uh not.

Why not support McCain? Donald Trump knows a thing or two about cheating on his wife.

All I have to say is Trump…..YOU'RE FIRED!!!!

Mike   October 15th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Trump may have lots of money but he is really short on brains.Palin is a true Clueless wack job,and a side-kick.

U.S. economic growth Fast recovery   October 15th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

You are absolutely correct… Bush needs to be impeached… But, the American tradition won't. His personal revenge on Iraq, put every American in deepest financial trouble ever…

karen-phoenix   October 15th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Trump backs McCain ONLY because he's rich!!! If Obama or Biden had done half of what McCain and Palin have done in their lives they would be nailed to the wall!!
McCain whole life is a series of very poor judgements–affairs after affairs; destruction of his first wife, Keating 5, lost 3 airplanes out of imcompetence, and worst of all he picked Palin!!! Palin is now probably going to be impeached in Alaska not just on abuse of power but having Wasilla tax payers built her house for nothing!!! AND McCain whole staff is a bunch of lobbiests. One was even a lobbiest for Sadum Hussen! Friends of McCain's are KKK members–the worst terrorist group in the US.
God Bless Obama/Biden!!!!

Alice   October 15th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

I think Palin would do great with the economy. She seems more sincere and realistic.

Cathy   October 15th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Donald Trump has not learned his lesson from Bush. Now he wants to see another Bush in office. (McBush). He even praised Sarah Palin. This shows you just how shallow he is.

Melissa   October 15th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Interesting. He's one of the moguls that will get taxed more with the new Presidency (which will likely be Democrat), yet he's saying the old President (Republican) should be impeached. I agree with him but its still interesting.

Jeanette   October 15th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Who cares what Donald Trump thinks??????????????
Does he think Bush left a "blue dress" as evidence…in other words, the Bush administration left nothing that could be used as evidence (they covered their trcks) and an impeachment is not what our country needs right now.
Anyway, Donald Trump should just shut up!!!

wwf   October 15th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Of course Trump is going to back McCain and think that Palin is the best things since sliced bread. With McCain in the big house, Trump will make more money. It IS the economy stupid. It just depends which side of it you are on.

Hannah Stevens   October 15th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Why didn't Pelosi impeach bush? That is the question. Well, most likely because the House and Senate did not have enough of a majority to do so and they would have needed some Republicans to go along with it and none would because it would have been political suicide and Republicans are more in lock step then Dems. Pretty straight forward.

ReMiWa   October 15th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

I concur Donald. Unfortunately, its not as easy as it is on "The Apprentice".

Raymond Duke   October 15th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

He should have been a long time ago along with most of the Senate and the House. Of course since (Dingy Harry Reid) , Nancy Pelosi, Barney Frank , Chris Dodd and Obama are all crooks they could not go forward with it without losing their own jobs.

Mystified   October 15th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

I was OK with Trump's comments until he said that he would trust Palin to run the economy.

Trump would have fired her on his TV show as an incompetent wannabe who epitomizes the Peter Principle theory.

John, FL   October 15th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

That's the spirit. Impeach all of the war criminals.

Justin in CA   October 15th, 2008 2:01 pm ET

George Bush……….Your Fired

Sandy   October 15th, 2008 2:01 pm ET

Here's the problem. Neither the House nor the Senate had enough votes to actually succeed with an impeachment (unlike the majorities the GOP had in the 1990s when they went after Clinton), so it would have failed and strengthened Bush's position even more. So the Dems' only alternative was to push legislation they wanted and stonewall Bush whenever they could (which they've done, pretty much). People think that just because the Dems have more seats that they have this great power to do what they want, but they don't have a veto-proof or fillibuster-proof majority, so they have to just chip away when they can.

Bush should have been impeached because he has violated a number of federal laws, but you don't make that kind of power play unless you've got enough of a majority to make it stick. Trump should know something about power plays and leverage.

Obama Supporter from FL   October 15th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

Trump wants Bush impeached, but is still ready to vote for McCain (who admitted he doesn't know much about the economy) and his inexperienced running mate, Bible Spice?

I guess some people will never learn.

rich   October 15th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

The only thing I agree with Trump on is that the Dems should have impeached Bush. Lets hope they have something else planned for him once he is out of office. I can't believe Trump would seriously run the risk of letting Palin running the economy unless he thinks that she will put more money in his bank accounts via his business which would be a grave risk. Palin is a joke and a Republican pawn and most Americans know it. She and Bush inherited the mentally challenge gene. Anyway, Trump needs to go sit somewhere in a corner, and keep his opinion to the voting boot.

J.P.   October 15th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

Well, by all means! He's THE Donald. Hey CNN….how about reporting on the Plumber who asked Obama why he was going to tax his business. Obama's reply, "Because we should spread the wealth around." (i.e. Socialism) Anyone owning or working for a business….you may lose your job because Obama will tax the business. They will have to make up for the tax hike some way. Cutting jobs is a great way to save money. Think about that while you are behind that little curtain.

Cleavette   October 15th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

Everyone is saying that McCain should be McCain. Why would you elect a guy that doesn't know who he is? After all McCain refered to a crowd of Repub supporters as "my fellow prisoners". Poor John is in a time warp.Maybe he chose Palin thinking about the years in capitivity.

Obama Supporter from UK   October 15th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

Hmm I wonder why Trump supports McCain…

It can't be anything to do with McCain wanting to extend Bush's tax breaks for the rich (and possibly bringing in more tax breaks for them too), whereas Obama wants to scrap the tax breaks and increase the tax rates that they pay - I'm almost sure that has hardly anything to do with it.

He 'trusts Palin to run the economy'… personally I wouldn't trust her to run a bath and I wouldn't trust Trump either.

ines   October 15th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

Trump will say anything to help his position. After Obama wins the election in a couple of weeks, Trump will start attacking his bud, McCain. He has no credibility whatsoever.

Joanne ...... santee   October 15th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

Wants to impeach Bush but elect McCain. Bush lied about the war and McCain wants to continue it. Is there a difference here?

linda., bella vista, ar   October 15th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Maybe Trump should view the AIP story that CNN pulled yesterday when they bowed to McFailin pressure.

How about some real reporting so people know what they are voting for.

tulsa   October 15th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

He backs McCain because it's in his interest to.

If you work for a living, it is NOT in your best interest to vote for McCain..

Vote for the guy with one house, One car, One wife, and a plan.

O/B08

Annette   October 15th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

This is the same guy who is supporting more of the same with McCain.?? Get real Trump???

RDS   October 15th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

I'm so sick of people saying two things…1. Let Sarah be Sarah and 2. Let John be John. My question is who the hell else can they be! Uggh!

Preco, NY   October 15th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Trump said. "It was almost — it just seemed like she was going to really look to impeach Bush and get him out of office, which personally I think would have been a wonderful thing."

I got news for you my friend, We the American people will not allow "BUSH 44″ anywhere near the white house this time around. We are very clear on that.

McCain represents ALL OF BUSH and more.

We will not go the impeachment route we will simply NOT VOTE FOR McCAIN!!!! ENOUGH OF BUSH!!!

Betty   October 15th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

I think he's just saying this because he likes McCain and is trying to separate McCain from Bush

Another Republican for Obama   October 15th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Trump, I've got good news and bad news -

You're HIRED: For call to impeach Bush

You're FIRED: For gawking at Unaware & Abusive Palin

Obama/Biden '08

Daryl in Seattle   October 15th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

How contradictory can you be? You want to see Bush impeached, but Sarah Palin is a wonderful governor? Trump just wants the tax cuts that come with a Republican president. The guy is a miser.

JM   October 15th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

I have to agree with Donald Trump Sarah Palin would do well with the economy. With the plan Obama has seems to be socialist.

Biff   October 15th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Trump wants Bush impeached… but he trusts Palin with the economy…… HUH ???

DUDE'S COMB OVER MUST BE TOO TIGHT OR SOMETHING…

K   October 15th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

ME TOO Donald…me too. You may be a pompous windbag, totally detached from the real world….but you are right about this one.

Scott   October 15th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Uh, Trump does realize who would become President if Bush was impeached, right? (Hint: It's not Trump, although that would almost definitely be better than the Constitutionally-required replacement.)

Anonymous   October 15th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

The guy is smart… he should've been impeached years ago!

Nick Wright   October 15th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

I think part of The Donald's brain is dead. If you think Bush did such a bad job, why would you embrace his policies by supporting McCain?

Ya_Ya   October 15th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Impeached?? I'd rather see him prosecuted.

Get Real   October 15th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

I just saw the funniest signs to describles McCain and Palin

Sign 1:
McCain and Palin = Incontinence and Incompetence

Sign 2:
McCain and Palin = Unstable and Unable

David   October 15th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

It's a slow news day when someone interviews Trump for his political opinion.

BM   October 15th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Your man, McAin voted for the war, Mr. Trump or did you know? I guess you are too rich to read or keep up with anything, but your money.

bee-dubbs   October 15th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

Lets see now, how do you get a high favorability rating as a governor?

1. Get elected in a one party, low population state
2. Look nice enough
3. Pay every resident an annual stipend just for living in the state.

Seems Palin's rating is easy to come by…

Mike, VA   October 15th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

You go Donald!

Eric   October 15th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

How to contradict oneself and look like a complete fool. Be right on Bush only to fail to see that Palin is just the worst version of the former.

SoCal   October 15th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

It's curious how Trump is outraged because Bush lied, but doesn't seem to worry much about a candidate - McCain - who's running a campaign of lies and distractions..

Andy   October 15th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

Bush: You're fired.

Donald's wedlocked Son   October 15th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

i dont know what my dad was thinking but umm probably wouldn't have Palin work for him nevertheless have the spare keys to the country. Who is he fooling? He needs to be impeached too.

Jason Hussein Obama   October 15th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

Uhm - Trump you do realize if they had impeached bush Dick Chaney would have become president. I don't think anyone would have wanted that.

Tim in Seattle   October 15th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

While I can't stand this man, and his praise of Palin is pure idiocy, wanting Bush impeached is the smartest thing I've ever heard come out of his mouth….

keeth in california   October 15th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

Impeach Bush but trust Palin after she violated the law in Alaska?!? Trump, you've lost it. You're fired!

Frank,MO   October 15th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

Trump, huh ? I guess he does not like to be in th 5% that will pay more taxes. I am part of the 95% who will NOT pay higher taxes. Cheers !

OBAMA'08

GET REAL.   October 15th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

Can we get statements from Oprah, Bono, Kid Rock, Warren Buffett, and every other name in the news too? Why Trump? 'Cause he makes vodka now?

Stop trying to heighten the tension CNN. Go read Newsweek's recent "Stumper"… you all know you're just trying to make this a close race when it's not one. Articles like this don't change anyone's mind.
