Enough with ‘Joe the Plumber,’ Palin says

Palin has been advised to avoid campaign news.
Palin has been advised to avoid campaign news.

(CNN) – Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin told supporters at a North Carolina fundraiser that her aides discouraged her from watching campaign news because they thought she would get “depressed.”

“At those times on the campaign trail when sometimes it’s easy to get a little bit discouraged, when you know, when you happen to turn on the news when your campaign staffers will let you turn on the news,” she said Thursday night, to laughter from the crowd. “Usually they’re like ‘Oh my gosh, don’t watch, you’re going to, you know, you’re going to get depressed.’

“But yeah, sometimes you do get depressed watching what it is that they’re reporting and the spin and some of the distortion of what our message is and what we stand for, sometimes that, that gets draining,” she added. “But it’s at events like these and our rallies that we are so energized and inspired and we know that we are not alone. We feel your strength and we feel the power of prayer, so many of you tell us that you are praying for us and praying for our country, and that’s why we so appreciate you being here.”

The view isn’t all glum from the trail. “We even saw today, thank the Lord, we saw some movement,” looking upwards and making a fist. Another bright note for her, she said later, was visiting “pro-America” areas of the country.

"We believe that the best of America is not all in Washington, D.C. We believe, we believe that the best of America is in the small towns that we get to visit, and in the wonderful little pockets of what I call the 'real America,' being here with all of you hard working very patriotic, very pro-America areas of this great nation," she said.

"This is where we find the kindness and the goodness and the courage of everyday Americans. Those who are running our factories, and teaching our kids, and growing our food, and fighting our wars for us. Those who are protecting us in uniform. Those who are protecting the virtues of freedom."

After 24 hours dominated by the campaign’s latest unwitting celebrity, the Alaska governor conceded she was getting a little tired of talking about Joe “The Plumber” Wurzelbach. “And I, I begged our speech writers, ‘Don’t make me say Joe the Plumber, please, in any speeches.’ And I was asked ‘Just one time, just at this fund raiser.’”

The McCain camp has encountered some playlist difficulties this year: Heart, John Mellencamp, Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Jackson Browne, and the Foo Fighters have all asked that the campaign stop using their songs on the trail. On Thursday, Palin expressed satisfaction with the latest musical selection.

“I don’t think we’ve ever had intro music by AC/DC before. That was kinda cool,” she said. “In fact, we were on the bus today, we were making a list of who are some celebrity singers who could come out and help us and gosh, for the life of us, the pickings were slim there. Who’s quasi-conservative out there in the celebrity land?”

Country singers Lee Greenwood and Hank Williams Jr. – who has written a song in tribute to the McCain-Palin ticket – have both appeared at events for the campaign. Palin thanked them both Thursday.

According to Palin, the 500-person event brought in roughly $800,000.

More ethnocentrism for Gov. Palin. Alaska is one of the least diverse states in the union and it is showing in Gov. Palin's rhetoric. Someone need to tell her that you can't use divise language and expect to pull new voters. Sarah stop preaching to the converted and start talking to indiviuals and reporters who, lord forbid, think and feel different from yourself. You can't reform Washington sitting up on your "high-horse" railling against it. YOU HAVE TO LEARN ABOUT IT!!! So after Obama hand you and McCain's behinds to you, you, Ms. Palin will have 4yrs to educate yourself and become a politician that has substance and ideas to go along with a quick-wit, and sharp tongue. You never was the equal to Obama, it was all hype!

I resent Ms. Palin insinuating Obama supporters a not "pro-America". This is just more of the same nonsense and vitriol that we've come to expect. Most of it I can ignore. But how dare she imply that I am not for my beloved country just because I have different beliefs than hers.

Palin's comment about being in the pro-America part of the country infuriates me. If she truly believes that the only true Americans are those who support her all down the line, she needs a reality check. A major reason I love American is that America allows me to disagree with a politician about what loving America means, and I am allowed to express that disagreement. I am really tired of Republicans claiming that they, and only they, love America and are Christians.

"I was like, 'Oh my Gosh', I shouldn't watch the news."

Well we know that Palin reads every newspaper printed so why does she need to watch the news?

Obama is fighting for the best health care plan in America were everyone will be coverd without any precondition. If you have High Blook pressure and you retire from work where your employer is paying have the payments. Then you are screwed unpon retirement because insurance companies will not insure you.

  6. facts are facts

Just wondering why all the true facts and related stories aren't being reported on by the main stream media. These are the ones concerning both Palin and McCain.

There are enough skeletons in both their closets that even McCain's 7 houses couldn't contain them all. No mention of these true facts being suppressed by the main stream medias could be America's final downfall.

Think about CNN as you know what these facts are and why they are kept under cover by your news network. It's expected FOX will keep them covered up.

Joe the Plumber who is not really a plumber as he does not have a plumbing license and neither does his boss?
Joe the Plumber who is claiming to be incensed about paying $1,000 more in taxes under Obama's plan on an income of $280,000 when he is not making six figures today?
Joe the Plumber who is the step son of McCain's corrupt business partner Charles Keating who got John McCain censured for poor judgment in the Keating Five Scandal?
No wonder Palin does not want to talk about the plant Joe the Plumber.

  15. Independent Missouri Voter

    Dear Senator McCain,

Statements like that from your vice president, visiting 'pro-America' parts of the country, are why your campaign, and nothing else, have driven me away from voting Republican on the 4th. The more and more Gov. Palin speaks, the more and more independents, at least me, become disenfranchised with your ticket. Now I know that it is too late to replace her, but if you wanted a conservative woman on your ticket to lock down the Evangelical voting blockand pissed Hilary supporters, couldn't you of picked a better one, one that does not come across as someone that I do not want speaking to a foreign dignitary with such terms as golly, gee whiz, and the like of her little catch phrases. Secretary of State RIce, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, or even Elizabeth Dole. Golly gee Sen. McCain, picking Condy RIce, you would of won the election a month ago.

But since it seems that you are no longer the McCain that I voted for in 2000, driving me and the other independent voters in my area away, I am torn between casting a vote for Obama, or Bob Barr, which in of itself, is a vote for Obama.

    Sincerely,
    Disenfranchised Missouri Voter

  17. A Senior Southern Lady

Sarah Palin is, without a doubt, the most under-educated, unaware of the world's situation and totally unqualified person to ever occupy the position of VP. What could McCain have been thinking? She gives no interviews, does not go on any programs such as Meet the Press but, does give interviews on Fox News, which is of no news value. As a woman, I would love to see a woman in the White House, but not this woman.
There are so many qualified Republican women that could have been chosen but, instead, he selects the mayor of a small time even smaller than the one in which I grew up and the governon of one of our least populated states. I have always liked and respected McCain but the selection of Palin, or anyone like her, makes it impossible for me to consider voting for McCain.

Right on, Independent leaning toward the right, I'm right there with you. The hypocrisy is there...right along with unadulterated hatred and downright mean-spiritedness.

Obama is an empty suit with an empty message of change that folks cling to blindly...conveniently forgetting his empty record.

Phil Stacey opened one rally, and he was awesome! I think they should use his music to open their rallies. His song "Round her" or "Its Who You know" would be perfect.
