(CNN) - A new average of the most recent national polls suggests Sen. Barack Obama holds a 6-point lead over Sen. John McCain.

The CNN Poll of Polls, compiled Friday morning, indicates that 49 percent of Americans say Obama, D-Illinois, is their choice for president, with 43 percent backing McCain, R-Arizona. Eight percent of those questioned are undecided.

Watch: Polls show Obama is leading McCain

The previous edition, compiled Thursday, indicated Obama had an 8-point lead over McCain, 50-42 percent.

This edition of the CNN Poll of Polls averaged four surveys: an American Research Group poll conducted October 11-13; a Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby survey taken October 13-16; a Gallup poll conducted October 13-15; and a Diageo/Hotline survey taken October 13-15.

Please America, for the sake of your own wellbeing and the rest of the world, please don't make the same mistake as the past 8 years and choose Sarah Palin for president (because that is who you're really electing with a 35% chance that McCain will not survive a first term) – please think clearly, there is a need for a stable and unifying president in your country!!

Good. We do not need to increase taxes in a time when everyone is hurting. Please read about other great depressions in American history before bashing my comment. Huge government spending and spreading the wealth around is the "new economics" that Herbert Hoover spoke of and what ultimately spiraled us into the great depression of the 1930's.

In his 2002 biography, Worth the Fighting For, McCain says this about himself:

McCain: “I didn’t decide to run for president to start a national crusade for the political reforms I believed in or to run a campaign as if it were some grand act of patriotism. In truth, I wanted to be president because it had become my ambition to be president. . . . In truth, I’d had the ambition for a long time.”

    HELLO PEOPLE! WAKE UP!

What took so long? Hopefully Obama's accendency will go into the abyss of descent.

Obama wants to tax not only us good middle of the roaders, but now he wants to tax "Joe the Plumber." Now that is just not the American Way. You just don't tax "Joe the Plumber." You can tax my neighbor and the banker down the road, but you just don't tax "Joe the Plumber!"

I am amazed that Joe's plight is highlighted by no less than "His Emminence" himself. This Chicagoan, on an ego trip has tripped up "major league" by telling Joe he was going to raise Joe's taxes, so that he can give it to the Welfare Queens.

I am amazed. Why would you want to tax anyone during this financial crisis?

The Silent Majority is beginning to speak. For those who counted McCain out, remember, the game isn't won until it is actually played. Game time is November 4. Ask the Patriots how being the overwhelming favorite worked out against the Giants in the Super Bowl.

Well of course it did. All of McCains negative ads are paying off. The media will nto stand up to Mccain and Palin and ask for interviews. The Plummer did more interviews then Plain has. If Palin can not do REAL interviews then she should not get airtime or space on the ticker. CNN, they will not do interviews with you but you still report on her.

And it's going to get a lot closer between now and November 4. If McCain gets it down to a 4 point difference on election day I truly believe he'll take it.
The combination of Senator McCain spelling out the specifics of his economic plan while Obama's character continues to come under increasing scrutiny, will be the difference along with Americans who want to keep Democracy rather than turn to Socialism.

The McCain attacks are paying off for him. It's a sad situation when people become animals and believe outright lies and false innuendo against another American. The past 8 years have turned people into hate mongering fiends that have lost their sense of decency.
McCain and Palin should be ashamed of the hate they're spreading, and the media should be more ashamed for playing their hatefilled lies and untruths.

John McCain and Sarah Palin will get my VOTE because I am voting for experience and a man/woman who've devoted their time to pushing the envelope.

Obama while educated is an unknown; what we do know about him is sketchy at best, his record is very liberal when he's taken the time to actually vote. Since his time in Chicago, he's developed and burned bridges with some of the country's most interesting to say the least characters. I think this questions an examination of his character and judgement.

At the end of the day, I want a proven hero to be leading the best country in the world, America! John McCain is that man, he's ready to be president.

I dont think two points indicates much. And obviously, there are many Obama supporters out there, who polled, will decline to say their vote is for Obama simply because they don't want their fellow supporters to stay home come Nov 4th, and take for granted that they don't need to vote!
I am happy to hear this news and I hope it's going to send a strong signal to Obama supporters, that if they want to send Obama at the White House, they need to double their impact and DONATE to his campaign!

here comes the expected narrowing of the polls to keep ratings up after the debates. Seriously, by most accounts people thought Obama won the debate, was more likable, more presidential, yadda yadda yadda. And I don't care if there were more Democrats in the polls, it wasn't enough to skew things to the point it is being driven by the Dems. Yet, he's dropping in the polls. What's the matter media? Republican Conservative Kathleen Parker was on the Stephen Colbert show a couple of days ago and all but said she was voting for Obama. Now she has written a column slamming the Republican Party for the way they have sent her hate mail and treated Wm. Buckley Jr. and openly states the Republican Party has been taken over by extremists and kooks.

More and more sensible Republicans are opting for Obama which will subsequently show up on November 4th. It's good the news medias want to keep the polling close for their own benefit as it rallies Obama supporters and doesn't allow them to take anything forgranted.

Oh boy...here it goes. The chance for the media to start WRITING the news. You guys have been wanting a scandal riddled campaign that's a horse race. Now, a couple of bounce points in the polls (probably because of the fortuitous and GOP-friendly SUDDEN PLUNGE in gas prices in the last five days) and you get to go nuts. You need the race to be a tight horse race for RATINGS. You're not covering the news.

Here...let me give you a hand: Ask about the Palin's card carying status in a traitorous secessionist movement in Alaska. Ask about it! Cover the calls from Palin in rallies about Obama "not being one of us." It's your job to be hard on all candidates, not just cover what the GOP says about the challenger. Do it!

Who cares. Every poll is different. I mean one poll can show Obama up by 11 and another show him up by 2. When you're sampling 800 people out of about 150,000,000 voters OBVIOUSLY there are going to be some differences.

As long as voter turnout is high Obama will win in a landslide.

The public has given Obama/Biden decisive victories in all of the debates. Obama's favorability ratings are higher than McCain's, and the majority of voters think Obama is best suited to fix the economy by a wide margin. So, given those things, what hope does McCain possibly have?

this is not a big swing and other polls show gians...so bottom line is...

Now as for Joe the plumber...come on this guy was a plant...
and he is not s licensed plumber , the business he works for is not licensed as a plumber, and he is not buying the business.
he makes 40K a year and would benefit in that realm from Obama's tax plan, plus, fot hsioe who are arigning their hands,...as I understand it the additonal tax would be on the amoount over 250K, not the whole amount.

    Take heart Obama supporters.

There is no swing here and there won't be a swing. Everyone has to get out and vote.

Remember it is the electoral college votes that count and there is no way McCain can catch Obama now even if McCain were to take those States still identified as toss up States. And Obama is neck and neck as well as slightly ahead in several of those toss up States.

Obama will take this election with nearly 334 electoral votes. You can count on it.

But get out there and vote. If you can vote early do so, and then for the rest of us let's pack those voting places on Nov. 4. no matter how long the lines are and how long we have to stand in line. Take lunch or diner in a picnic basket and camp out in those lines if necessary. Let's give Obama a clear mandate.

This just shows what fools a lot of people are. That "Joe the plumber" fiasco got McCain a lot of publicity, even though the guy isn't a Joe and isn't a plumber. Americans seem to want a joke rather than a competent president. Lord help us if they get one.

Interesting choice of polls. Hotline/Diego has a weighting problem (showing Dems only +2). Not sure which of the THREE Gallup models you are using, but the traditional model is predicated on Republicans having GREATER turnout than Democrats (which is traditional). No one thinks that will be the case this year. And then there is ZOGBY. I don't need to go there.

If you are going to use tracking polls, use all of them and weight the results. This cherry picking to show tightness is pretty ridiculous.

This was never going to be a 10 or 11 point blowout, and most people who follow these things know it. The country is too divided for the race not to close near the finish line. However, it is going to be extremely difficult for McCain to catch up enough to take the White House. Dems, don't rest on your laurels – Difficult does not mean Impossible.

Just remember, McCain may very well win Oklahoma by 50 or more points – but that gets him the same number of Electoral College votes as if he had won it by 2 points. Obama may win Ohio by 2 points, but he gets the same number of EC votes if he won it by 50 points. Eyes on the prize!

Obama WILL win as well he deserves.. and please stop it with Joe the Plumber, he doesnt make anywhere near $250,000 and evidently can't pay his taxes even under George Bush ( back taxes approx. 1200.) this guy should not be a viable person that america is trying to relate to.. and will you people please vote based on informed facts, foxx news is not a news source, it is a continuous running commercial for John Mccain.. people should vote on what serves their best interest, 95% should vote Obama and the rest ( if you were the true christians you say you are) than you should vote for Obama as well, spread the wealth, spread the love, spread the peace, it is in the Good for everyone!!!

Which Zogby poll was this? Over this time period, Zogby was push polling for McCain saying such untrue things as "If you knew Barack Obama supported a plan to give government health care coverage to illegal immigrants, would you be" more or less likely to vote for McCain? Very questionable behavior by Zogby recently.

ANd by the way CNN why don't you mention the fact that Obama now has 317 electoral votes, instead of saying his lead fell!!

You know better, that's partisan rhetoric!
Whoever wrote that clearly wants to give a sense of regression when in fact the new electoral vote shows just the opposite.

Obama/ Biden will not increase anyone's taxes unless they have incomes greater than 250K. This 'Joe the Plumber' character was a McCain plant. Pay no attention to him.
Not only will crooked McCain/ dizzy Palin increase your taxes (McCain clearly stated he will tax your health care benefits), they will give hugh tax breaks to large corporations, big oil, and multi millionaires. He can't even be honest about this. He's a liar and a fraud.

Polls are goofy. Until the pollsters release who exactly they are polling the data is useless. And that's just one problem with polling. Recent post debate polling on CNN stated there was 10% more Democrats than Republicans asked whether or not Obama or McCain was the winner. The results are skewed yet CNN, and I'm sure other news organizations did the same, spread headlines of a 13% spread between Obama and McCain. Whatever. Exit polling from 2004 Presidential election at 3:00pm eastern time was declaring a so-called landslide victory for John Kerry, and we know how THAT turned out. The media is always going to try and dictate and define a presidential election. This is just a fact of life. Deal with it.

Now it is time for us adults to weigh in and stop being the silent majority and just be the majority. You see there is a large diffrence between arrogant and confident. Love the first comment, the first line says it all about Obama supporters.
Unless you agree with them you must be stupid. Well you know what whether I support Obama or McCain( still undecided) it is my choice and my right to vote for who I want. I will not become a lemming because of the historical nature of this race and blindly follow someone who I do not believe in.
The last two Presidential elections I have had to vote against someone and not for someone and that realy stinks and I don't want to do that again. Both canidates have pros and cons and neither has shown that they have what it takes, in my opinion, to run this coutry.

Panic!! These polls are getting silly. Remember, this is not a national election so national polls are irrelevnt at this point. As long as Obama has a higher positivity rating, and holds his leads in key states, the election will his to loose and not McCains to win. Surveys in national polls sway due to who is being interviewed and who is being honest when saying they are independent. The only numbers that are more volitile than the stock market are the media's poll numbers.

Everyone settle down. These polls have gone back and forth just about every day since day 1. mcCain might have lost the third debate, but he did a little better than he did in the other 2. His numbers will go up alightly because of that. He's going to try and use Joe the plumber to his advantage, but I'm not convinced that will really help him all that much. He's already started another barage of negative attack ads and phone calls. They've blown up on him the entire election season so far. It will happen again.

If nothing else, fellow Obama supporters, use this as fuel to get yourselves out there and vote. VOTE EARLY IF YOU CAN. We are in control of the country's destiny, and that control is ours to lose. We must continue to maintain the upper hand.

O.K people, polling 101... You put 10,000 red marbles and 10,000 blue marbles in a bag, shake them up, and pull out 5. A very small percent of marbles are drawn on, and from day to day you will get different marbles (Monday 3 red, 2 blue Tuesday 4 red one blue etc),
a more telling poll would be to take 500 marbles out of the bag and put them on a table and see if they change color.

The moral of the story is, when it comes to polls, DON"T LOSE YOUR MARBLES, at the end of the day, the finish line is still the decider.

Calm down, Nightingale. Turns out Joe the Plumber isn't who McCain implied he was. Turns out he only makes about $40k per year and has a lien against his house because he hasn't been paying his state taxes (BTW, doesn't even have plumbing license! He says he doesn't need one because his employer has one., which is BS). Obama's tax plan would actually help him more than McCain's would, given his tru circumstances. And even if we really were able to "buy a plumbing business", he'd still be ahead with Obama's plan!

Polls don't access cell phone users. Most young people today are both Obama supporters and lack a land line they use cell phones. Simply because they cannot and are not polled, does not mean they won't show up and vote – and we all know that Obama is their candidate of choice AND that they have the strongest swing vote of any time period. I'm not one bit worried that there is a 1% difference in the numbers stated in these so-called accurate polls ( which always have a difference of +/- 3 or more points anyway lol! )

Fella from chicago, clearly you also have no idea what socialism is. Socialism is the complete "equal" redistribution of wealth, ie, we all make the same money. Obama's plan comes nowhere near this. In fact, under his plan, it's still essentially the same balance we saw under Reagan in the 80s. Socialism also involves the nationalizing of industry, ie, the people owning the means of production. Obama's plan does not call for that. Finally, even the godfather of capitalism called for modest redistribution of wealth in his book "The Wealth of Nations." He understood it was healthy for capitalism.

Not to mention the fact you don't seem to understand the difference between a system used to choose leaders versus an economic system. Capitalism and socialism are economic systems, either can come via democracy or totalitarianism. You can have totalitarian capitalism or democratic socialism, and vice-versa.

Too much ignorance in this country. Almost unbelievable. We need serious beefing up of civics education in our school systems.

The hate mongering is on both sides. On any given day, just read some of these posts by the left on CNN. Before you start pointing the fingers, take a good long look in the mirror. We are a divided country and until we can start start learning to get along as Americans, we deserve every bit of bad fortune that has been thrown our way. And polls don't mean anything BTW. I thought we all learned that by now.

Of course it will be a tight race....I've seen every presidential election since Carter vs Reagan in 1980(I'm only 36).Each race went almost neck and neck til election day.Plus polls really aren't a true indicator of which way people will actually vote.If you ask certain questions to a different demographic of people, you could actually influence their decision.

I am getting so sick of this McCain crap. He's trying to tie Obama to Ayers, but yet at the debate he said that Ayers was an "old washed up terrorist." If he is so washed up, then why are you bringing it up. Then he wants to talk about ACORN, but he fails to mention that he gave a big speech for them back in 2006 praising their work. I guess its ok for McCain to do these things, just not Obama. To be honest, this world would be better off if McCain was still a POW. But noooo, he's not because they didn't want him either.

The dirt and mud-slinging is the nature of politics but in this election it seems to be more the nature of republican politics. There are really two reasons I will vote for Obama – McCain's temperament which I truly, truly believe will put this country in danger, and McCain's choice of Palin, again, a huge lack of judgment that showed me McCain's desire to win at all costs trumped the welfare of America, that will also put this country in danger. The choice we the voters make will determine what happens to us and in the end, we'll get what we deserve as a nation.

"Joe the Plumber" whose "taxes are going to be raised".... doesn't make anything near 250, 000 dollars which means he is not going to have his taxes raised, he actually owes thousands of dollars in taxes on his home which has a lean on it, and he doesn't even have a plumbing licencse in Ohio!!!!!! Let's drop the whole pathetic reference and look at the issues that will effect every American...not a measly 5 percent.

Why is it when he is up 10 points the polls are the greatest things ever but the minute he drops a point or two, it's the GOP machine kicking in. Why don't you all worry about the voter registration fraud that is rampantly going on rather than a poll that is easily manipulated by either party

as a grandma of 14 in very diverse family, I am appalled at the behavior of the Rep campaign. How can I continue to encourage my family to treat people like I would want to be treated? Perhaps the most difficult thing to overcome with them is the concept that Reps. purport to be Christian, caring people. Yet the behavior is all too often the direct opposite. Rather it seems to endorse the pious, righteous attitude that all too long has pushed others away form the christian way of living.

Last July when gas prices were at their highest, I predicted that the gas prices would drop a few weeks before the election. The Republicans control the oil companies, and high gas prices are not favorable to them in the pols. All Obama supporters out there need to remind voters of the Bush/McCain failed policies of the last 8 years. Also, when McCain says that the last 8 years have not been good, isn't he really implying that things were much better under a Democrat, the Clinton Administration? Also, Palin is a disaster. News this week that her future son-in-law is dropping out of high school should make us all very scared.

  167. Whatever...Nightingale Sings in Berkley Square

Nightingale Sings in Berkley Square, you sound really idiodict by repeating the nonsense that McCain said about taxing Joe the Plumber and if he gets taxed, well so what! He apparently has enough money to buy a business while many people, hardworking people don't have to even buy the basics for their homes. Plus Joe the plumber don't even have a license to operate, he needs to take some business management 101 and learn before arguing about something he doesn't have!

Anyone voting for McCain is just completely blind!

Reasons to vote for Obama: He is eloquent, he is educated. The only problem is that he is also the most inexperienced candidate for President in two hundred years. He has never done anything outstanding, and he has shown extremely poor judgement on the Iraq War, Bill Ayers, Rev. Wright, his teenage Communist mentor; his buddy Rezko, his convicted French oil buddy, an infinitum that we don't even know about.
How can he fight terrorism when he is a close acquaintence of terrorists Ayers and his wife?
His strong lead in the polls just shows how little the people polled care about their country.

Why do people still believe that Obama will tax everybody? He says it plain and clear that he will only raise taxes on people making over $250K. If I made over $250K a year, I wouldn't mind paying higher taxes. Wise up and listen and read about both parties policies before you post. As for Ayers, he's one of the most well respected educators in Illinois. Republicans put him on that board with Obama. Nobody cared about Rev. Wright when he was holding hands with the Clintons! That was less than 20 years ago. McCain gave a keynote address for ACORN two years ago. Everything that they throw at Obama, they were just as guilty of not too long ago!
