WASHINGTON (CNN) - The Supreme Court is backing Ohio elections officials in an ongoing dispute over allegations of voter registration fraud.

The justices in an unsigned opinion Friday blocked a lower court order directing the Ohio Secretary of State– a Democrat– to update its voter registration database after information provided by some newly registered voters did not match up with Social Security and driver registration numbers.

The state Republican party had asked for enforcement of a temporary restraining order, but the justices ultimately denied that request.

Wow, justice is finally ringing true for America! Change really is coming and it has OBAMA/BIDEN written all over it!

There go those ACTIVIST LEFT WING JUDGES again! They must be IN THE TANK for Barry HUSSEIN Obama!!!!!!!!! This nation is going down the SOCIALIST road like a basket to hell!!!!!!!!

(That is my sarcastic summation of the emotional whining we'll hear from Conservatives about this decision by the SCOTUS).

Obama 08. Finally, common sense is returning to America.

Texas Lady   October 17th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Wow...the whole concept of LEGAL voters is thrown out – after the Democrats try to get fake voters out to get the obamanation elected.

ACORN – and OBAMA make me sick.

Voter 'Registration' Fraud IS NOT THE SAME as 'Voter' Fraud.

It's all about who ACTUALLY VOTES!!!!!!

Susan from Scotts Valley, CA   October 17th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Dave – give me a break. Independent – this is not a blow against honest elections. No one has committed voter fraud. No one has shown up professing to be Mickey Mouse. There have been some lazy employees who have filled out voter registration forms with bogus information. That is not voter fraud.

Richard, who is going to start the fires? White people who are afraid African Americans are going to take over. Get a grip.

Susanna   October 17th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Seems to me that all those voter records should have been cleaned up BETWEEN elections. There would have been PLENTY of time. Looks like someone hasn't been doing her job to meet the needs of the real voting public. Here we go again – taking up our time after a Presidential election – spending tax dollars – to once again count and verify votes. We already KNOW there has been voter registration fraud. We already KNOW there has been voter fraud. It isn't that there might be a whiff of fraud. This whole issue stinks to high heaven!
And, it insults the American people and this very precious system we have to vote our saviors in and the bums out. Hope we all live through it!

tk   October 17th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

The basic ;principle of this country is "One citizen, one vote" .
Since dead people are no longer citizens, why do they get to vote ?
For that matter, why do aliens (legal AND illegal) get to vote ?
They are not "citizens".

Obama seeks "fairness" for all Americans (just look at his tax plan)
except when it comes to holding an honest election.
What hypocrisy !

Ohio residences should be very upset about this ruling from the Supreme Court. Now they have a few hundred thousand fraudulent possible votes in that state that will made legitimate votes worthless. So much for the old saying “one man one vote”. It should be "fake man two hundred thousand votes."

Toni   October 17th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

Give it a rest people. There was potential voter "registration" fraud and it was reported. Voter registration. Not voter fraud. And by all serious news accounts ACORN not only notified officials but ACORN flagged the registrations. FYI, ACORN is not the only group that does these registration drives nor does them this particular way. The McCain camp themselves tried to stop the GOP in Colorado from getting the registrations discarded (because, let's face it, the voters could have been... wait for it... Republicans). I also read an article today from a former Justice Dept official who knows this is just the ususal good ole voter suppresion the GOP uses every single time.

Paul in Chicago   October 17th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

C'mon and smell the propaganda. Get the facts before you go of half cocked about fraud and the dirty democrats. I was a registered republican until a combination of the 2000 elections (floridian) and then Terry Schievo. Pull the ring from your nose and go read and find out what really happened in Ohio then get outraged if you must. Remember, SHEEP get sheared.

Gilboagirl   October 17th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

Ohio's GOP was just trying to repeat Florida in the 2004 election where pole workers refused to allow low income voters to vote because their names supposedly showed up on a list at election locations of FELONS who were not supposed to have the right to vote.
Hooray for the disenfranchised! You finally one one!

Chris   October 17th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

Totally shocking that the supreme court, packed with some of the worst conservative judges in the world, would actually fall down on thew side of the people for a change over the Republican parties transparent attempts to disenfranchise voters in a ket battle ground state. Suck on that Republicans!

Paul   October 17th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

I'm looking at these comments and I'm just stunned. Why in the world would anyone be *for* election fraud?? Supporting election fraud when it's for your candidate will bite you later when it's *not* for your candidate. All elections should be honest!

What most people don't get:

You can have millions of fraudulent registrations – not one becomes an actual vote. You need proof to vote, without it you can't, even if you have a registration.

What this REALLY is is the GOP trying to get legitimately registered people off the voting list. If ACORN, an organization that scews democaratic, registered you, and you are legit, the bogus allegations may get you knocked off...thus helping McCain.

How horrible.

NYCVOTER   October 17th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

GOP corruption arrogance and incompetence????????!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take a look at Congress and take alook at what the cause of the financial crisis and you'll see who the incompetent ones are. But you guys don't like facts just networks and sites that cater to the "glitz and glam of bam". The Democrats are getting off way too easy and just because Fox is the only network that will report anything remotley negative about Obama does not mean the are a GOP network. Obama crying about Fox news is his way of getting his little unknowledgeable kno-nothing followers to not believe all the negative things about the mans life and there are a whole lot of them.

Yea I know blame Fox, IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FBI INVESTIGATIONS, RIGHT? Or the Democrat in Nevada who brought this to the knowledge of most people.

Get over yourselves and next time you talk about incompetence look no further than Queen Pelosi, Barney Frank, Chriss Dodd, Harry Reid, and BARACK OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone has the right to vote!!!

Michelle, PA   October 17th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

I'm not a fan of several current sitting Justices, but I have to give them their due on properly deciding this case by applying existing Federal laws. States may not purge their voter lists less than 90 days before an election. Conservatives who wanted Justices to apply existing law instead of "legislating from the bench" should be happy.

Obamalism   October 17th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

Ok, the way I'm reading it, they didn't let her off the hook for verifying the forms, but they did give her a stay on the deadline of Saturday.

I'm not sure why they imposed the short deadline in the first place. As long as 100% of them are verified by Nov. 4th, then I don't think anyone is asking anything out of the ordinary. It's her job to see that all votes are verified and accurate.

The enormous number that were cast during the week where you can registar and vote on the same day MUST be verified. I find it highly suspicious that the voting organizations were in full swing driving poor, addicted, felons and homeless to the polls during this period as oppopsed to a date closer to the election.

Gail in SC   October 17th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

Wow! This is a surprise. I expected it to go the other way.

Wake UP America   October 17th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

Carl from MI   October 17th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Once again... Republicans make last minute attempts to purge voters from the polls. Funny that Republicans are SO worries about voter fraud... yet they are the ones who are the masters at it and the ones that always go to prison for it!!

WAKE UP, AMERICA!! VOTE SMART... NOT SENILE!!!

Vasilios Birlidis   October 17th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

And we all thought that once Blackwell was out of the way, the Republicans would play nice. If I had a dime for every person, in a non-republican neighborhood, that was forced to wait in line, due to Blackwell only giving us 3 voting machines (one of which broke down), even though we had a higher population density in inner-city columbus (when compared to Dublin, Ohio) why I could pay for the bailout myself.

I hope they all get what they deserve. in other words, throw the bums and crooks out. However, this doesn't exclude Reed, Pelosi, and Dean, because while I support Obama 100%, I will never forget what they did to Clinton, with Mich and florida.

Noah October 17th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

"WHY IS IT THAT EVERY SINGLE CASE OF VOTER FRAUD ... DEMOCRAT."

Well, Noah, it's mostly because Democrats don't make a habit of fighting to disenfranchise voters, the way Republicans do.

This whole game is about delegitimizing the election after the fact, just in case they lose.

McCain would rather destroy democracy than lose an election.

Scott   October 17th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

This is absolutely outrageous!!!!

How can anyone sit back and watch this happen!!!

Go figure that Obama supporters are OK with this...and are defending this. If he wins this election, there should be an asterick next to his name...to remind people of the fraud that is taking place!!! Just imagine what would be happening if the it was a Republican in Ohio who didn't want to do anything about this...and the fraudulent registrations were backing McCain...she would be out of a job.

Jim Doyle   October 17th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

Noah – pay attention. It's not that every case of voter fraud has been on the Democratic side. It's that every case of accusations of voter fraud has come from the Republican side. Doesn't it make you wonder that the Republicans put all their efforts into preventing people from voting? Actually, there have been very few cases of voter fraud. Do you really think hundreds of thousands of Democrats are running around trying to vote more than once on election day, or has it entered your tiny little Republican brain that maybe your party is spending enormous amounts of time and money to find little technicalities so they can disenfranchise people. Why does it always seem to be Democrats who get disenfranchised? Do you EVER see the Democrats running around trying to prevent people from voting? Get real.

The Republicans are against any activity that will disenfranchise voters...including early voting. And for all you folks complaining about voter fraud...where were you in 2000 when the Scalia appointed Bush?????

Devil's Advocate   October 17th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Some of you are obviously misinformed. You have to show some type of identification or voter registration when you vote. No one is going to show up with an ID that say's Mickey Mouse or Tony Romo. Grow up people. This is why I love being in the Army and deploying. So I can fight for individuals who won't take the time to read and research, but just comment aimlessly.

Wake up America!!

dave   October 17th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Can someone explain:

They voted not to verify because this is a total non-issue.

Say someone registers as "Mickey Mouse" (or some other bogus name) to vote. Nobody catches it and it goes on the books as Mickey Mouse being registered to vote.

Now comes election day. Mickey Mouse is on the rolls. In order for Mickey to vote, now someone has to show up at the polls with ID that matches the info on the voter rolls. That never happens, and hence our democracy is not threatened.

But some people want to use this non-issue as an excuse to remove thousands of names from voter rolls. Are some of them bogus? Sure! Are some of them real? Yes! So let me ask you this: what is the worse crime, allowing fake names to stay on the rolls, or not letting real people vote?

Team America   October 17th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Stop cheating Democrats. Voter fraud....really?? If you're so confident in Obama's "hopes and dreams" speeches, why are you registering non-existent people? And to these Ohio justices, God forbid Ohio has a fair and legal voter count...shameful people the Dems are.

milo   October 17th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

The Republican Party knew of these "problems" for over a year, yet they waited till now to address them.
To me that makes their concerns about voter fraud ring hollow.
I believe it was a ploy by Republicans to supress what they considered anti-Republican voters.

Gary Swanson   October 17th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Those who are unhappy with this decision need to keep in mind that this is the same Supreme Court that virtually awarded George W. Bush the election in 2000. The only personel changes that have happened since 2000 are the two Justices who were appointed by President Bush and approved by what was at the time of their appointments a Republican-controlled Senate.

You guys need to ask yourselves what they know about THIS CASE that you don't? What evidence have they seen that you're not privy too?

Strip away the partisanship and challenge yourselves with those questions.

Acorn tries to register any and all of us. It is not their job to judge accuracy; the local election boards do that.

Dan   October 17th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

We'd all love to make sure that nobody votes twice, but if by doing so you disqualify more people from voting who *should* be able to vote due to technical errors, then it's the wrong thing to do.

We need to overhaul our election process to ensure that everyone's vote is counted accurately (and counted *once*), that's for sure. But 2 weeks before a presidential election is not the right time to do it!

W00t for this decision.

Republicans have manipulated Ohio's results in elections past through similar tactics. This year, even if they succeed in stealing Ohio, the states electoral votes alone wont give McCain the Presidency.

Republicans need to focus their vote purging and electronic vote machine rigging efforts in a bigger state, say California, if they are to have any hope of stealing this election.

Kudos to Ohio's Supreme Court and Secretary of State for standing up for Democracy and for standing up against the Republicans.

Diana   October 17th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

It's reported on mediamatters.org that CNN reports leave out relevant facts on ACORN voter registration allegations. CNN airs at least 54 misleading segments on ACORN. Drew Griffins' bias is so obvious. He shouldn't be on any "investigation" teams. CNN, please clatify your biased reports on ACORN.

jonny   October 17th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

There are many reasons why legit information wouldnt match up. I just moved a couple months ago and the government doesnt have my new information. CNN is being vague on the details of what the differences are, to make it seem like this is a story, when it isnt. if there was evidence of voter fraud, the courts would require action.

The republicans are just submitting a few fraudulent voter registrations (submitted by themselves i am sure) to try to discredit huge numbers of VALID registrations, in a desperate attempt to win the election.

Political Cynic   October 17th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

I would point out that Ohio can use a photo ID requirement to prevent fraudulent voting. Bad, or even false, registrations do NOT equate with fraudulent votes given this safeguard and the appropriate use of provisional ballots. Equating a bad registration form with a fraudulent vote is poor logic and shows a fundamental lack of understanding of the system.

Another sad example of how the American Electorate is easily distracted by emotion and doesn't take the time to truly STUDY the issues.

It is not voter fraud until they vote and if there is no form for them to go by on that day they cannot vote. In the state of VA, you have to have a vaild IDin order to vote. I am pretty sure this is the practice every where.

Any who with commom sense can know that this is frame up-because even the dumbness person would know that in order for those forms to work people would have to have an valid ID. How stupid can people get. This sound like RNC work to throw everyone off from voting for Obama. Won't work though.

McCain/Palin   October 17th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

California Voter   October 17th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

After the election that took place in 2000 I would think all Americans would want to prevent voter fraud, and it would seem to me one place it can start is during voter registration. The Supreme Court interfered in 2000 and let's hope their ruling in 2008 doesn't bring about the same mess that took place with George W.

If only there were one more right-wing extremist on the Supreme Court, the Republicans could've had a fascist dictatorship that suspends habeus corpus and tortures, all sanctioned by the court.

Barbara - 65 yr old white female in NC   October 17th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

I voted yesterday in NC for Barack. Biggest percentage voting straight dem. What's to argue with? Polls are crowded, but long lines were the only problem. Thank you NC.

Ken in Dallas   October 17th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

This is just a ploy by the Republicans that they plan to use to dispute the election results after the fact. If they don't get their way, they'll try to tear the country apart, rather than accept losing an election.

So much for "Country First." McCain would rather destroy democracy than lose an election.

Gal, Ohio   October 17th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

Good to see people sticking up for the people. This does not mean newly registered voters will not be checked...they will. But it will prevent alot of new registered voters from being turned away. That is what America is based on.

Andrew   October 17th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Just another well-documented GOP attempt to reduce voter turnout and discount the election process. This case, as with ACORN, does not pose any significant threat to our democracy. Good for the SC. Even the Conservative justices on the court are smart enough to see through this political ploy.

At least they, like everyone else, recognize that the history of this country is full of voter disenfranchisement (2000 certainly comes to mind). Yet there has never been any systemic cases of voter fraud, much less any cases of voter fraud on a scale large enough to influence an election.

And palin, I really wish you would stop lying against Obama regarding Acorn and Ayers and you need to focus on your 5 year old child who is going around giving people the finger.

Why isn't CNN reporting as much about Palin's REAL ethics violations as much as this ALLEGED voter regististraion fraud?? Palin keeps referring to this story at her campaugn rallies as "voter fraud" and no one the media ever points this error out. I'm sick of Lew Dobbs and Drew Griffin hammering away at this non-story and completely ignoring Palin's ethics problems in the media afraid to say anything negative about her now??

Brad   October 17th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

I would love to know why it is such a bad idea to check registrations prior to counting the votes. Do you know how easy it is to vote in another state like Ohio – VERY easy. If you cast more than one vote or cast a vote when you are not allowed due to being an illegal immigrant or felon, then you are seriously tainting the election. We need the MOST fair election results we can get to make this legit. We are just asking the Sec of State in Ohio to DO HER JOB. She even admits there are questions about 200,000 votes cast early. Lets check them and make sure they are legit. However, she is playing politics, hoping the majority of those are cast for Obama. THAT IS JUST WRONG! If this was a republican Sec of State, you Dem's would be screaming too!

Johnny in South Carolina   October 17th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

I hope that they do get to bottom of this voter fraud mess. Because we don' t want or need the same mistakes that were made in 00' and 04'. If McCain/ Palin are elected because of more voter fraud we're going to be in deep doo doo.

I hope that the legal voters that Acorn did register actually are allowed to vote. Acorn is a legitimate company that hired untrustworthy people. Now their name is being dragged thru the mud. These folks were paid $8 or $9 an hour and they did not do their job properly. But there are much larger companies that hired untrustworthy people ( AIG, Lehman, Fannie, Freddie, etc. ). And paid those folks millions. Those companies did a lot worse things than put Mickey Mouse on a voter registration card.

In this case if some one has lost their home or is in college they should not lose their right to vote.

AJ   October 17th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

ACORN is committing voter fraud on behalf of the Obama campaign!
I think he is getting allot out of the $800,000 he spent.

It is bad enough that ACORN is picking up druggies and some mentally ill homeless people, who have no access to the issues, off of the streets and putting them on a bus or van to vote! In addition to registering criminals and illegal immigrants. Now voter fraud!

This looks very bad on Acorn and is bad for the perception of the black community.

ok – for those of you who are worried about voter fraud. if somebody tries to register mickey mouse as a voter, do you know what happens?? NOTHING. see, in order to actually PLACE A VOTE you need to show up at the polls with your ID. NOBODY except Mickey mouse can show up and vote for Mickey Mouse – thus, this whole "conspiracy" is a big heaping pile of BS. YOU CAN NOT VOTE UNLESS YOU SHOW PROPER ID. so that means no dead people can vote, no second grader can vote, and no disney character can vote regardless of whether they were registered or not.

THIS IS A FABRICATED SCHEME THAT SIMPLY REEKS OF GOP VOTER SUPPRESSION TACTICS.

SoCal   October 17th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

CNN it's about time your Drew Griffin stops misinforming your viewers about ACORN.

This whole ACORN story is just another distraction from the McCain campaign.

ACORN flags and turns in three kinds of cards, those that it can verify, those that are incomplete, and those that it flags as problematic. It turns those in labeled in a special way and are very conservative in terms of what it flags as problematic.

So, why would ACORN submit registration forms it had deemed "suspicious"? Because under most state laws, voter registration organizations are REQUIRED to turn in all the forms they receive. Even those they know that may be problematic!

Count on the Republicans to make a mountain out of a molehill. As tight as this race is and Ohio being a state they desperately need, this was not unexpected, nor was the Supreme Court decision.

More partisan arguing instead of progress ( rational, practical ) forward.

I'm tired of the partisan bickering that the Republicans bring, I want to know how we're moving forward. Obama constantly talks about what he's going to do. The Republicans need to do the same.

Sorry about that one GOP. Without Ken Blackwell doing some fishy things for you as Sec'y of State, you'll now have to go with another tactic to steal Ohio's electoral votes.

WARNING: if any of these people show up in Ohio, we know voter suppression is on the way.
1) Tom Davis, Clean Election and Voter Fraud Committee member
2) Cameron Quinn, who was a director of the Republican voter suppression front group, the American Center for Voting Rights.
3) California Secretary of State Bill Jones, who has long fought for ways to make it more difficult for people to vote.
4) Susan Molinari who cried wolf about voter fraud in 2004 and 2006, only to find her allegations proven false.
5) Larry D. Thompson ho hired Bradley Schlozman to work in the Justice Department where he approved Tom Delay’s redistricting plan, GA’s modern “Jim Crow Law” and pursued politicized indictments against ACORN in MO.

I always get nervous when this present Supreme Court is asked to intervene in political cases.

That's not to say that there aren't issues which need, or may need, to be addressed. And I agree that the whole process must be transparent and ifd there has been wrongdoing, perpetrators must be punished.

My concern is connected to what happened in Florida 8 years ago and in Ohio 4 years ago, both situations favouring the Republicans while doing nothing to enhance public trust in, and the integrity of, our legal system.

And every time things like this happen, our image in the world( which we keep insisting must follow in our leadership) fades a bit more.

The registrations don't matter if the election workers do their job and match one voter with one vote against the registration and personal ID which is required to cast a vote. The courts got this one right this time!. Another thing to consider, what happens to those people that don't drive or don't have a drivers license. Do they loose their right to vote because they don't have a license to match with their voters registration. I didn't know that you were required to have a drivers license to have the right to cast a vote.

OH MY GOD... !! I READ IT WRONG .... THEY WENT WITH THE "ELECTIONS OFFICIALS".....

OH MY GOD.....

ok.. for all of the attacks coming to me for my first post.. like Mccain said on letterman last night... "I screwed up"..

CindyN--PA   October 17th, 2008 12:46 pm ET

Looks like the GOP wont get to disinfranchise Ohio voters.

Ted   October 17th, 2008 12:46 pm ET

So much for GOP attempts to stop people from voting

Park the Straight Hate Express   October 17th, 2008 12:45 pm ET

Thank God! I thought the universe has changed...

Investigators know now that the ACORN (racialized) tactic by McCane and the RNC is basless. Ask Repub. Gov. Christ in FLA.

Slime....

Demorat to the bone   October 17th, 2008 12:45 pm ET

Good. The republicans are not going to steal this election this year. They are trying everything they can to try and stop Barack from being elected but it will not work.

S. Holt   October 17th, 2008 12:45 pm ET

I am sure the RNC will try to use whatever is necessary to flaw this election. They succeeded in Florida because of the chads and Bush's brother was there to insure. Now, I am sure there will be some bumps in the road but we will overcome that too. Let's get on with this election. Go Obama/Biden 2008.

Biff   October 17th, 2008 12:45 pm ET

gee... what a surprise....

this is the court in 2000 that stayed a recount... thus causing a missed deadline.. then ruled "because the deadline was missed.. the case is over"...

only the "illusion" of freedom people......

Lawrence in Denver   October 17th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

No matter what comes of this I am sure the repugs will dispute. This is voter registration. You would still need a valid ID in order to vote and can only vote once.

The Obama/Biden campaign will win by a landslide without the help of fraudulent activity!

FInally democrats fighting back against repug-run voter suppression drive before the aftermath. Now hopefully they will clear up the discrepancies before we hear cries of foul-play (from the people who know it best) after Obama wins Ohio.

MA Voter   October 17th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

So this is how democracy ends? With thundering applause?

We have just lost the #1 principle in a democratic society – the concept of 1 person = 1 vote.

I guess when I thought Obama was going to usher in socialism, I was optomistic. Now we're going to get totalitarianism as well.

This is a sad, sad day for the late, great, U.S. of A.

ohio   October 17th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

there you go GOP pulling stunts again. they were the first ones playing dirty back in 2000 with AL GORE. What happne to Florida huh???

Kim, Charlotte, NC   October 17th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

Yeah!.....I just voted today in Charlotte.

This is a sad day in America. Whatever happened to one person one vote? First the Democratic party disenfranchises millions of voters then it tries to cheat by registering people more than once. I'm truly disappointed in the Dems. This former Hillary supporter is voting for McCain.

Eric   October 17th, 2008 12:43 pm ET

I guess this makes the Supreme Court a liberal loving leftist bunch of communists then?

Dennis from CA   October 17th, 2008 12:42 pm ET

GOP needs to chill out... Knock it off. If you are loosing the election, at least loose it with dignity. People remember cry babies when next election comes around.

J   October 17th, 2008 12:42 pm ET

Score one for the good guys.
