From

(CNN) – McCain adviser Nancy Pfotenhauer made a splash Saturday by drawing a line between northern Virginia and “real Virginia,” which she said is the “part of the state that is more Southern in nature,” a comment that may not sit well with the many residents of the commonwealth residing north of Frederickburg.

Using Pfotenhauer’s definition, however, Barack Obama and his running mate Joe Biden have out-campaigned their Republican rivals by a significant margin in “real Virginia.”

Obama has made nine campaign stops in central, southwest and southeast Virginia: in Martinsville, Lynchburg, Chester, Chesapeake, Fredericksburg, Lebanon, Norfolk, Roanoke and Newport News. Biden has made two: Castlewood and Fredericksburg.

By contrast, McCain and his running mate Sarah Palin have only ventured out of northern Virginia twice. On Monday, the pair held a joint rally in Virginia Beach, and Palin then continued on to a campaign stop in Richmond.

McCain’s rally Saturday was in the northern Virginia town of Woodbridge, home to thousands of Virginians who commute up to Washington, D.C. every day on I-95.

pro-American parts of the country? Real-Virginia parts of VA? Brachmann's statement that most of congress should be investigated bc they may hold anti-American sentiments? A RNC woman leader in CA distributing Obama Welfare dollars with his head and fried chicken, watermelon, bbq, and koolaid? Why are they doing this? Why are they bound and determine to have us hate each other? Can they truly believe that if we are not Christian, not white, that we don't love and cherish this country? So are we to believe that we are terrorist if we vote for Obama? Please Sen McCain, please this is not how you would want your grandchildren to know of your legacy. When history writes about you, it will say how you ran the nastiest campaign ever and that it was responsible for stirring up racial divides amongs the good loving people of this nation. If you win, all minorities will feel very scared to live in this nation.

will from CO   October 19th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

So McCain wants to be seen as a "real leader", huh? It might help that image if he'd stop trying to create these rifts between Americans. Guess what? A true leader unites, he doesn't turn people against each other to further his career.when you vote on Nov 4, think about the candidate that campaigns with division and hatred, and the candidate who sat down and talked policy with an opposition voter after she screamed at him and refused to shake his hand. REAL VIRGINIA??? What an insult to the rest of the wonderful people of that great state. First you have Palin referring to certain areas of our country as "PRO-AMERICA", now McCain's aide's comments. IT APPEARS THAT WE ALL SHOULD BE QUESTIONING THEIR PATRIOTISM.

"the real Virginia" What is wrong with this man? Even if he wins doens't he realize half of the country will NEVER respect him? Now McCain aides are attempting to explain what he meant by this comment.

Does America want or need a President who will sink so low?

Obama/Biden

Dal CA   October 18th, 2008 11:53 pm ET

McCain was born in Panama. IS that or was that part of USA. McCain is not eligible to run for the president of USA.

Tom   October 18th, 2008 11:42 pm ET

First, Palin's "pro-American" gaffee, now this – obviously, Republicans believe anywhere that isn't leaning their way isn't really America.

Sorry guys – we get to vote to, and trust me, you're not gonna like it...

Pat Pa.   October 18th, 2008 11:42 pm ET

I really hope that the folks in Virginia do not stand for this nonsense.

Pat, NJ   October 18th, 2008 11:41 pm ET

My WWII vet dad taught us 8 kids that voting is not only a right, but a duty as an American. I have never missed a vote in my life (I am 56), I even vote in local board of education elections (and that's pretty boring). As a registered Republican, I voted for John McCain in the NJ primaries. As an American, I picked up my Obama/Biden yard sign today. I am proud to cast my vote this year for Obama. I hope that some of my republican neighbors see my sign and realize that, yes, it is OK to vote for the best candidate.

Listen up everyone, if McCain wins this election America as we now know it will disappear. McCain is involved with Project for the New American Century (PNAC); these people are considered neocons or neocans. Research it for yourselves. Google it and read all about it. These same folks want to "label" Obama.

Please think   October 18th, 2008 11:29 pm ET

McCain-Palin and the RNC are repugnant. I can no longer be objective toward comprehending support for this ticket. They exclaim "country first" while making every attempt to divide it in order to retain power over this great nation. Their disgusting divisive attacks prey on the deepest fears and ignorance of the American people. It's painful to see but perhaps necessary in order for America to progress toward a brighter future. Growing pains.

tim in wa.   October 18th, 2008 11:23 pm ET

The RNC knows that their bid to control this country for four more years is over – so they're using their puppets – the once great man John McCain and that twit from Alaska – to drive as big a wedge into the country as possible before Obama takes office – so Obama will be fighting more crisis than anyone president should ever have to deal with – a divided nation and a world that can't stand us. This way, they can swoop back in in four years and finish the job of the fascist nation they've been working so hard on during the last 8 years...

Paco - Tucson, AZ   October 18th, 2008 11:20 pm ET

They can continue trying to DIVIDE as much as they please. But the McCain-Palin ticket will never CONQUER.

John McCain and Sarah Palin won't be satisfied until there is a huge gap between Americans that's unhealable. What in God's green earth are they doing? The real Virginia, the more pro-American areas of the country? And you better check before you go and vote, the GOP are purging voters across this nation, some simply because they haven't voted recent. This is scary stuff folks. It's called win at all costs.

Northern Virginia used to be green and gorgeous horse country in the 1960's. A safe place for children to wander miles together on Halloween night. Doors were left open and/or unlocked. It was truly Real Virginia~~~

Now the horses are gone, the hills (and everything else) covered in concrete. Crime, foreigners and Yankees ruined the place. Heaven turned into hell.

Well, I have my memories of walking through the snowdrifts to Congressional and Sleepy Hollow Schools.....past the horse pastures and all the birch trees. Some places still had dirt roads!

Falls Church will always be home in my heart, but it truly isn't "really Virginia" anymore~~~

Undecided voter. Peace & Love.

A "splash?" A splash is what an actor makes when they star in their first major role, or what a debutante does when their sweet 16 goes well. What Pfotenhauer made was an insult to Northern Virginians, and a veiled attack on the fabric that binds people together in that state. Along with Governor Palin's comments, we can now see a consistent pattern by the McCain campaign, to divide the people of this country and turn them against one another. They are playing with fire, and we must recognize and reject these vile tactics. We are all "real" Americans, just as all Virginians are "real" Virginians.

William   October 18th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

First of all, it's ridiculous to designate a state as "real." What's the other portion of the state then? "Unreal" Virginia? I'm sure that's great for the self-image of proud Virginians living there.

Second, if you're going to attack your opponent, at least do it accurately.

Cathy   October 18th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Honestly, the people that McCain has running his campaign have got to be some of the numbest people I have ever heard in my life! Even the "Bushies" weren't this moronic! And anybody who supports Palin is obviously too lazy or blinded by her phoniness to have done proper research on the woman. Because if people really took the time to check out her back ground they'd mostly likely be ashamed to support her, lest they insult their own intelligence! She is one scary dudette!!!!
I strongly suggest anyone supporting this phony politician seriously reasearch her- Even Alaskans call her a slime bag!!!

David   October 18th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

LOBBYIST NANCY made a moronic statement. Neither McCain nor Sarah palin attracts those souther nature voters. Republicans don't have that candidate. Besides, country changed a lot. I surely hope it's too late for McDemented to be voted into office. Prepare to reinstitute the draft if he does win as we'll be starting wars all over with this egotistical maniac in office.

My friends, how can anyone still consider McLoon as a viable president? My friends, it boggles the mind that a lying, arrogant, erratic, cheating, forgetful (senile), angry, morally bankrupt old man could be voted in as president.

This bitter old man has sold his soul and honor and has done so so very cheaply.

Has America learned nothing from the last eight years of this nation's steady decline on the world stage? You're going to vote for a man who can't look his opponent in the eye, cannot take criticism, cannot handle a crisis, has no real policies of his own (if he does they are changed every couple weeks) to try and match what he thinks his 'base' wants to hear.

I hope it's not so. A vote for McLame/Failin is a vote to continue this country's downward spiral in the world. We'll be working for China...

In fact, while I should find it insulting that the McCain campaign is using these far-reaching, generalizing, and DIVISIVE terms, instead, I actually feel relieved that they know people like me are NOT for them or for their policies.

GOBAMA-BIDEN 2008. It is very scary to imagine another four years with a pro-war president. Please, America, please, Virginia, step it up, and let's vote in the best candidate: BARACK OBAMA.

Juan Grain   October 18th, 2008 9:15 pm ET

Go ahead and keep showing that your real intention is to divide Americans even more than Bush has. You are a dysfunctional man McCain. The thought of Presidential powers alone was more than you can handle. You do not have the temperment to make the judjements and decisions that America needs from it's President. America wants to thank you for letting us interview you during the primary and this general election campaign and we wish you luck in your next mavericky adventure!

Xavier   October 18th, 2008 9:13 pm ET

Real Virginia? Pro American states? Palin, McCain and the rest of the republican party it seems are willing to bring back segregation, separate but equal, and riding in the back o the bus just to have a shot at winning the presidency. After these individuals lose the election, they really need to stop and look in the mirror. Dont be surprised if you see your eyes looking back at you from behind the sillohuettes of a white hood. You really should be ashamed, but probably are not.

Lu   October 18th, 2008 9:11 pm ET

Another example of their DIVISIVE message.

Anonymous   October 18th, 2008 9:11 pm ET

How easily we give way to the same brain washing and fear tactics of republicans. It's as if no one remembers the last eight years. Everyone knows the candidate that won't sell what's left of the country to the highest bidders.
I see it coming though, because too many of Americans refuse view past 18th century life, it's 2008, and if we are going to regain the edge Americans once enjoyed, we'll have ensure that every American gets a fair start with the best of everything. After the last debate, I changed the channel to listen to all news reports, CNBC, FOX NEWS, and MSNBC and so on.
I heard about Joe the Plummer and how Obama would spread his wealth, but I did not here Obama's response, that small businesses would not be penalized but get credits, and that the wealthy companies would be encouraged to discontinue gorging themselves while there employees work for next to nothing. When are we going to open our eyes.

Cathy   October 18th, 2008 9:08 pm ET

So now according to McCain/Palin campaign only "real Virginia" is "Pro-America"???

The republicans are really trying hard to divide this country. "Good gus v. Bad guys"…"Pro-America v. Non-Pro America"…"Real Virginia v. Non-Real Virginia"…"Christians v. Non-Christian…"

What's next??? Separate water fountains for democrats and republicans.

I'VE HAD IT WITH MCCAIN AND PALIN AND TRYING TO DIVIDE THIS COUNTRY!!!

Chris, Antioch, CA   October 18th, 2008 9:07 pm ET

Yeah, McCain's running scared in VA. With Dem governor, it's a state the GOP can't cheat in. It's also the reason why the networks are planning for a very early election night. Obama will win the election once VA is called. Makes me smile.

Northern Virginia must be one of those anti-American parts of the country that Governer Palin alluded to.

Betty the Beautician   October 18th, 2008 9:06 pm ET

First it was "Pro America" and now it is "real Virginia". I thought we were all Americans. Sends a clear message to me that the Republican Party does not consider anyone who doesn't think like they do to be "pro America or Americans."

Former Republican in Texas   October 18th, 2008 9:05 pm ET

Could the McCain/Palin debacle go any further in trying to inject racist into this campaign. They offend me more every time they open their mouths anymore– and I'm as white as they come. But they keep throwing their subtle little jabs out there that I find extremely offensive and disgusting. They don't have anything substative to say about policy or issues, so they keep throwing out garbage to try to incite whatever bigoted support they might be able to stir up.

There is a candidate in the race, however, who thinks we can live in the UNITED States of America.

eholl   October 18th, 2008 9:00 pm ET

"Real Virginia", "Real America", "Real Americans", really stupid! John McCain and the Republican Party need to understand that their divisive politics is not playing outside the base. I resent the implications of their statments that those that don't share their beliefs are somehow not the patriotic Americans that they are. How can you claim to reach across the aisle when you are doing nothing but dividing the country between "real" and the rest of us. His campaign is becoming surreal. Stop the nonsense!

Renee   October 18th, 2008 8:59 pm ET

Mccain/Palin is inciting their supporters the Republicans to show hate and anger toward others and I don'nt want leaders like that for my family, That is why Obama/Biden has my vote.

DDH   October 18th, 2008 8:54 pm ET

Yep.

Northern Virginia is quite different than the rest of Virginia. Always has been. Very liberal in their thinking. Im sure it has something to do with their proximity to DC. Ive lived in the Shenandoah Valley all my life and Northern Virginia has almost always voted different than the rest of the state. However, they also have a large population base so are able to influence the rest of the state.

David   October 18th, 2008 8:52 pm ET

I guess after the election, McCain will proclaim victory in the patriotic, real America, even if Obama won more electoral votes.

With the secessionist Sarah Palin around, how long before we see the "Red States of America" try to split off from the Union?

All kidding aside, it is pathetic that the McCain camp should continue to push this idiotic notion that Obama, and now Obama supporters, are un-American, as if only the McCainiacs know what it is to be true citizens.

Greg, San Francisco, CA   October 18th, 2008 8:51 pm ET

The "Real" Virginia? Is there a "Make-Believe" Virginia? Another hollow and unsuccessful attempt by the McCain campaign to divide this country's voters. His only chance of success is to make people fear Obama. There is and has never been a compelling reason to vote for John McCain.

Jennifer   October 18th, 2008 8:50 pm ET

I think the American people should send Palin and her sidekick McCain packing. All this talk of por-America parts of the country and the "real Virginia" is unpatriotic and un-American.

Crazy Cat Lady   October 18th, 2008 8:50 pm ET

Yet another wallow in wedge politics as the McCain campaign struggles desperately to claw its way out of the dustbin of history.

First the Minnesota Congresswoman, then Palin, now this hack.

If you aren't in lock-step with the McCain way of thinking, somehow you live in a place that is not the "Real Virgina", "Part of the the country that loves America" or you hold "UnAmerican views".

If these goons manage to steal the election, can the rest of us take a clue from Todd Palin and ask to secede?

dpmd   October 18th, 2008 8:49 pm ET

More uninformed comments-the McCain campaign is grasping at straws in midst of the chaos that is the McCain campaign.

Another Republican gone independent   October 18th, 2008 8:49 pm ET

Couldn't agree more! These two have become the most abhorrent, tasteless and dividers of our greeat country. They have brought out the worst of America including racisism, terriorist, socialism and hatism, not to mention that Joe the Plumber is actually Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, the grandson of Charles Keating (of the Keating Five)? If so, then Joe's dad would be Robert Wurzelbacher (Keating's son-in-law) who testified against him in the savings & loan scandal, and went to federal prison for about 3 and a half years for misappropriating several million dollars.

B. Vic   October 18th, 2008 8:48 pm ET

I cringe to hear this divisive campaign by McCain and Co.
Which part is the "real Virginia" and which is the "unreal", and the "real or good part of America" and the " Unreal America"?
For a person who would "rather win a war than win an election" , Isn't it hypocritical that uniting us in this country is far more important than breaking it into parts for political gains.?
I remember the Iraq war was won a long time ago when our President declared, "Mission Accomplished" Several years latter our sons and daughters are still fighting and dying to "win the peace"
I hope at the end of this combative electioneering Nov. 5, there would be one and only one United States of America.

fabrice   October 18th, 2008 8:48 pm ET

I'm conservative young man who's supporting Obama not because i agree with him but because i hate John Mccain divisive campaign.

Once again, McCain and his cronies are trying to divide voters in Virginia and other states with hateful words and phrases ("real VIrginia, "Socialism"). The "CREEP", "Swift boat", "splatter theory" tactics of the Republican Party WILL NOT SUCCEED. Voters need to decide who to vote for based on issues, not hateful speech and words.

Mary Porter   October 18th, 2008 8:33 pm ET

Pfotenhauer and Palin seem to be trying to communicate in a code I remember well. During my childhood in deep South, I saw the Klan mobilize against school integration and the Voting Rights Act with easily deciphered substitutions of "patriotic" catch-phrases. They knew everybody knew what they were saying, but they kept a veneer of respectability because people went along with it.

The whole McCain strategy is now based on the idea that some regions of the country are more "pro-American" or "more Southern in nature." They attack the Democratic Party for including people who aren't "real" Americans like them because they live in cities or along coasts. I have wonderful news for them, though; they are wrong. There are no red states or blue states, this is the United States of America.

Why is it so close?   October 18th, 2008 8:33 pm ET

"Pro-American parts of the country"..."real Virginia"...what's next?

What next? The McCain-Palin cabal need to learn to chose words more carefully. Whether they meen to or not their words have the potential to divide America in a crucial time when we must be united.

Obama-Biden 2008!

Tony   October 18th, 2008 8:30 pm ET

I am offended. As someone who has been adopted by VA, for McCain to say that we are not the real VA is insulting.
If that is the case, we, North of Federicksburg will succeed to North Virgina. Considering we have all the job, and companies in Reston and and Fairfax, we will keep out own income tax, and business taxes, so we can spend it in the new State of North Virgina. Just like how West Virginia struggles, lets see how South Virginia, would be.

We have the McCain campaign putting McCain first, and not Country. No sense of history that we fought a war to divide this country.
But I guess that is OK with McCain, because Todd Palin belongs to a party that wants to see Alaska succeed from the US.

McCain is a joke!

humgrad, iowa city, ia   October 18th, 2008 8:30 pm ET

Just a minute- did Pfotenhauer SAY anywhere that McCain/Palin campaigned more than Obama/Biden in "real" Virginia? According to the article above, all she said was that McCain would do better in "real" Virginia than Obama would, which is exactly what current polls (as well as previous voting patterns) would show pretty clearly. Thus, the "however" clause in the first sentence of the above article doesn't make very much sense.

Leah DiMarco, Texas   October 18th, 2008 8:29 pm ET

What is the matter with those Republicans?

First Palin says she thinks the small towns are the 'real America' and that she enjoys the 'pro-American' parts of the USA.

sandee in Portland   October 18th, 2008 8:27 pm ET

It's my opinion McCain will lose this election for the same reason Hillary lost the primary. He went into this election thinking the red states were in the bag for him and, therefore, did not show those states much attention until it's too late. Now all he can do is try to shore up the red states instead of trying to change one or two of the blue states. Shows the difference between a well run, carefully thought out campaign and one run by the seat of it's pants.

Moe, NY   October 18th, 2008 8:27 pm ET

The Republicans certainly know how to divide. Too bad they do not know how to bring Americans together. Hopefully America will be rid of Republicans and their campaign of hate come November.

Brian Rich   October 18th, 2008 8:27 pm ET

Just like rural America being the "real America" you'll find that Obama has visited Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, North Dakota, Nevada, New Mexico and Colorado – all 2004 Bush states – more than McCain has.

McCain thinks Americans are so closed-minded and ignorant that they'll just vote straight-ticket Republican til the end of eternity.

Surprise, John, we care about the issues. And we're not voting for you.

alpha_nu_916   October 18th, 2008 8:25 pm ET

it would benefit sen. mccain to reign in his surrogates and advisors – the repugs devisive politics, while rallying the base, has given sen. obama a significant lead among independents.
the bile coming from nancy pfotenhauer regarding northern virginian's will not help sen. mccain cut into sen. obama's 10 point lead in VA. especially now that a majority of virginians no longer live in the "real virginia."

if sen. mccain tried put forth messages of hope, instead those grounded in fear and loathing, he might draw crowds of 100,000 and 75,000 like sen. obama did in MO instead of 4,000 and 3,000 he drew today in NC and VA.

McCain and Palen are slowing down, or else they think they have Virginia locked up. Virginia is fortunate they won't have to listen to either of them with their lies, innuendos and just plain vicious talk about Obama and his campaign. They are getting desperate and increasing their unfounded lies and innuendos and anything else they can throw in. They are pathetic.....how do they live with themselves and sleep nights? My question is WHY the American people cannot see the Governor of Alaska answer questions in a media forum???? As VP or God forbid as President she will have to sooner or later respond to questions that have not been rehearsed. WHAT ARE THEY AFRAID OF????? I think the American people have the right to see, as the McCain forces testify day after day, that Gov Palin is qualified to run the most powerful country in the world.....if she can't or won't talk to our own media what will she do in a crisis.......like Bush, have someone else do her thinking for her. GOOD LUCK AMERICA.......

Pfotenhauer is representative the rest of the fraudulent and disgusting McCain staff. Just like Sarah Palin saying in a town in North Carolina that it was one of the parts of America that are "Pro-American". In other words, Palin was saying that there are areas within America that are "Anti-America". Pfotenhauer and Palin are two of the same, mean spirited people who love to spread hate and lies so that people eventually turn on one another.

I have a news flash for them – when they lose this election, it will indeed be 'real' Americans who have voted against them – in 'real' Virginia, 'real' Ohio, etc, etc, etc, etc….

Mary   October 18th, 2008 8:21 pm ET

Did anyone notice all the Obama as a socialist story blogs are closed for comment. CNN must be terrified by the 's' word because it is really resonating with people who get this. The fact is $250,000 sounds rich to most but in this tax bracket people are paying 46% including state. Quite frankly, they already pay their fair share. Obama is talking socialism and people need to get it, that it doesn't matter if the goverment gives you a tax break if you lose your job. It won't help much if you are out of work. People in his target crosshairs are all those employed by anyone affected by the increase ie: people who work in the service business, people working for small businesses on a cash register, waitresses and hotel help because all of these people will be losing jobs once Obama's socialist system goes into place. The fact that cnn will not let us comment on it proves the 's' word is the real deal. I can hear their knees shaking! Watch how soon this comment is removed from the board!

Tayo, NY   October 18th, 2008 8:21 pm ET

That is McCain and his campaign with potlitics of division. Americans will not supports his policy of devision.
We are tired of divided America.

We remains one America!

One indivisible Nation under God!!

Period.

Will the real John McCain please stend!

Dawn   October 18th, 2008 8:18 pm ET

Can anyone tell me why the Mcsame/Painful campaign is cutting this country into those who are pro america and those that are anti america. Now there is a real Virginia and a part that is not so real. I am disgusted by this pair. Their tactics are detestable and Americans need to stand up and say "NOT THIS TIME!!"

Fromer Republican   October 18th, 2008 8:18 pm ET

Yeah, that's the way to win our hearts and minds: create yet more divisiveness. What is it with these guys? The "real" Virginia? The "pro-American" parts of the US? The we're for Joe Sixpack, like Obama/Biden aren't? The McCain campaign spends all their time trying to carve society into exploitable splinters, instigating hate and manufacturing schisms to their advantage, and doofus right wing lemmings jump right on the Smear-talk Express. Don't be a doofus – vote for a future, vote Democrat.

REAL VIRGINIAN   October 18th, 2008 8:18 pm ET

The southern parts of Virginia are not SOUTHERN at all. It is apparent that she has never been to the Tidewater area. I was born and raised in Newport News, VA. and there are plenty of REAL VIRGINIANS here that support Obama.

Statements like these really show you what McCain's campain is made up of; a bunch of ignorant and predjudice women. First Palin makes the "real parts of America" comment and now this. I guess real America/Virginians to them are redneck, gun totting, beer drinking Billy jo six packs. How sad. Profiling and stereotyping coming from Palin and Pfotenhauer. I think Obama sounds more American then either of those surnames.

A Real Virginian

vsheehan   October 18th, 2008 8:17 pm ET

I lived in Northern VA for ten years. I only moved recently because of housing costs; I loved that VA. But it's obvious Nancy Pfotenhauer has no clue what she is talking about. Most of my Friends, co workers, neighbors were Republicans at heart. I was a lone Liberal in a sea of red all the way up till the day I left.

IndyVoter   October 18th, 2008 8:16 pm ET

Real Virginia? WTH is that? That is just like Sarah Palin's comments about the "best" and pro-America parts of America are the small-towns...Let me say that as an Army Veteran, former federal employee, former teacher (government) and tax-payer citizen of a large metropolitan area, I am repulsed by these comments that suggest that somehow we are not REAL Americans or that we are not pro-Americans or that somehow people who live in small towns are better than those in big cities. America deserves so much better than this...I am proud to cast my vote for Obama/Biden on November 4th to say NO to this type of divisive and toxic mentality.

Polly   October 18th, 2008 8:16 pm ET

If we couldn't see the color or appearance of these two men, who then would people choose to vote for? I believe many are voting for Obama because they want to "make history" and support a black man, but it should be because of his character not color. I tend to question his character, however Senator McCain has lived his life supporting this country and I think he deserves to be President. I think his experiences have more than prepared him for it. I think Senator Obama is trying to bring about a change in this country that would weaken it and it's people. It doesn't hurt people to struggle. It should encourage them to work harder. This is a land of opportunity not hand-outs. It's ok to help people socially if they need it. It's another to take advantage of social programs. I'm sick of people who won't lift a finger to help themselves. They surely won't ever fight for their country will they?

Alvin Sykes   October 18th, 2008 8:16 pm ET

Last I checked there is only ONE Virginia and it includes Northern Virginia and the entire state is going blue come November 4th.

Independent Voter   October 18th, 2008 8:16 pm ET

I wonder what "real" Virginians would do if they had to build an economy on something other than the US Defense Department and OUR tax dollars.

The Commonwealth of Virginia receives more Defense dollars than any other state in the union.

Talk about feeding at the public trough!!!!!!!

You say Virginia. I say Oink oink.

John   October 18th, 2008 8:14 pm ET

Obama is the most liberal Senator in America. Look at his voting record. His voting record is more liberal than Harry Reid. Conservative Americans who are thinking of voting for Obama need to realize that if Obama wins, yes, they can feel good that they may have made up for having done racist things in their past by voting for Obama, but they will also empower Reid, Pelosi and Obama to fast track our nation away from a safe balanced bipartisan way of managing our economic evolution. Those of you who feel guilty for your past racist sins, please don’t think that voting for Obama will help clear your conscience.

MDC   October 18th, 2008 8:14 pm ET

One part of America is more "pro-America" now its "real-Virginia" what's next? McCain is out of touch.

Michelle Marietta   October 18th, 2008 8:13 pm ET

McCain and Palin ar so inslulting.........Palin thinks some parts of the country are more American and Patriotic, now McCains advisors claim the real Virginia is the southern part and not Northern Virginia.................

they are dividing the country just by their campaigns...this is the last straw....I wish the election was tomorrow...shut up Scary Palin and McCain

Voting for Obama and Biden

Stephy   October 18th, 2008 8:12 pm ET

Has anyone else relized that what McPalin is doing just insane. They are pitting americans against americans to win an election.Regardless of where you live it's all the USA. and the USA doesn't want McPalin in the White House.

Mike in Toronto   October 18th, 2008 8:12 pm ET

You know, it really doesn't surprise me anymore. The McCain campaign has shown almost no regard for accuracy or even reality. It's almost as if they sincerely believe that just because they say something it must be true.Look how they've turned poor Joe the Plumber into a political icon of ignorance and inaccuracy.A guy who really could benefit from Obama's tax plans is a Republican icon because he thinks some day he just might make enough to be in higher tax category. In the meantime, his own taxes go unpaid and Obama is a SOCIALIST because he wants to give the other 95% a tax break! Jeesh, this is getting surreal.

So someone made a foolish statement and CNN feels compelled to defend the Obama camp before they can put out their own statement on the topic. How could CNN be more biased.

Maybe Peter Hamby and the other "Political Producers" who are more like Obama spokesmen than journalists could consider their bias once in a while.

(If this gets past the moderators, I'll be pleasantly surprised.)

anne   October 18th, 2008 8:11 pm ET

All their "We're real, if you don't like us you're not real" chickens are coming home and laying eggs all over the McCain campaign's face. He can hide in his tiny "real" pockets of support that are fueled by only hatred and greed but he can only hide there for so long.

100,000 REAL Americans stood up today and said "thanks but no thanks" to the McCain campaign. Obama is a real leader. We have needed one for a long, long time.

LT for Obama   October 18th, 2008 8:11 pm ET

So there is the "Real Virginia" and the "Pro America". Have these people truly lost their minds?

So basically, if we don't fall into one of these two, we don't matter? Does that mean that the McCain/Palin administration will only fight for real virginians and pro Americans and just ignore the rest of us?

lilacs   October 18th, 2008 8:10 pm ET

mcCain/Plain is dividing this country worst that bush did. They claim to be pro-america,but all I hear is anti-american bs. The real virgina, pocketsof pro-americans. McCain would rather have a secessionst and a tax evader working for him that an honest hard working american that is tryiing to just get buy ,Thanks to the policay of the republican party. Thanks but no thanks. The real anti working peoples party the republicans. GO OBAMA/BIDDEN only 17 more days to go.America we dont need 4 more years of the same failed policies that mccain will bring.

Real Virginia, huh? That kinda like the pro-American part of the country? These people are fascists.

Shooz   October 18th, 2008 8:09 pm ET

I have lived in Virgina, Iowa, Washington State, and I feel people in the US are all LOYAL Americans, no matter there heritage. Most are intelligent, but very few have the smarts to interpet what policians say. Most listen to someone else spew what they think, without looking anything up themselves ( they are lazy). Maybe McBush could nominate "Joe" for FEMA since "Brownie" was doing such a good job after Katrina.

Sue in MI   October 18th, 2008 8:08 pm ET

McCain's "rally" ought to be called what it is: bash Senator Obama, the Democrats, and anyone who disagrees with McCain and Palin. This campaign is turning out to be the most divisive in history-so glad they both are good at reaching across the aisle, because if hell freezes over and they win, there will be a lot of people on the "other side."

phil s.   October 18th, 2008 8:08 pm ET

here we go again...mccain and his cronies keep dividing the country.

William   October 18th, 2008 8:08 pm ET

Correct me if I'm wrong here. If you live inside the Virginia state border doesn't that make a Virginian. This state is diverse in it's people and ideas. One thing we are not is STUPID!! To the McCain camp don't treat us as if we will fall for the jedi mind trick.

dustin   October 18th, 2008 8:07 pm ET

why does the mccain campaigne continue to insist on naming parts of america as anti-american, or not the real america, they continue to divide the nation. Show me a state that hasn't contributed to america and i'll show you the padded room you belong in.

Glenn   October 18th, 2008 8:07 pm ET

It is extremely difficult to understand why the voters of the "real Virginia" would vote for the policies and programs that best fit the propoganda of Nazi Joseph Goebbels.

GeorgiaPeachforObama   October 18th, 2008 8:07 pm ET

I'm sure the people in northern Virginia are thrilled to know they aren't real. Does that make them exempt from state taxes and laws?

I don't know whether to laugh or cry over the McCain camp remarks.

The Flag   October 18th, 2008 8:06 pm ET

As I watched Barack Obama give his economic speech yesterday; I noticed a very peculiar flag next to the american flag behind him. It looked a little like our "stars and stripes", but instead it had a big "O" on it. Now he can put an big "O" on his plane if he likes, but what is he doing altering our American flag, the symbol of our proud country and our patriotism? Our flag represents one nation under God and that one nation is not the Obamanation!

Another Republican for Obama   October 18th, 2008 8:05 pm ET

Everyone making excuses for Johm McCain and his scummy campaign, saying he dosen't know whats going on, is simply proving that if McCain can't run his campaign he certaintly can't run this country.
I am so ashamed of him and of Sara Palin that I cannot bear to watch any news program that endorses them, or any newspaper that endorses them. They are ruining the good name of our country, and I will never support anyone that degrades an entire race of people just to win an election.
This McCain-Palin racism, including their robo calls, needs to stop now.

John McCain should explain the "real John McCain and the real Sara Palin", and should explain his horrible robo calls, his horrible race baiting, hate mongering, traitor speaking ralies, and why he is trying to start a race war in the USA.
He should also know that he and the republican party are destroying the good name of our country by resorting to such a degrading campaign.

Queen   October 18th, 2008 7:59 pm ET

This is exactly what we don't need. The "real" Virginia, as opposed to the "fake" Virginia. The “pro-America” as opposed to the anti-American. I’m sure she’ll have another explanation for her statement. We don't need division, and that's exactly what the McCain ticket has become more of. I'm not watching Sarah Palin on SNL, I’d rather find something constructive to do with my time. We don't need a comedian; we need an intelligent, articulate and upstanding, knowledgeable VP, like Joe Biden.

Bennie   October 18th, 2008 7:59 pm ET

I would really like to hear from the people of Virginia about this. I don't think the McCain campaign know that this could be seen as being divisive.

P. D.   October 18th, 2008 7:59 pm ET

Who is more American? What's the real Virginia? What are these people talking about? WE ARE ALL AMERICANS! We are white, brown and black. We have different faiths. We are a melting pot. McCain and Palin are insulting millions of Americans. This kind of division is what is wrong with politics today.

More divisive words from the Republican campaign. What a shock. Deriding one portion of a state. I guess the north part of Virginia is not "pro-American" enough for Republicans.

REAL VIRGINIA, SOUNDS LIKE PRFO AMERICAN AREAS AND THAT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Republicans really don't get it.......

what i think is hysterical about this quote is that mccain's headquarters are in crystal city, VIRGINIA. but apparently, since crystal city is right out side of DC, they are not in "REAL VIRGINIA". seriously, how many times can mccain slam the state that his headquarters are and still expect to win it?
i live in virginia and i will vote for obama in VIRGINIA (the real one, that is).

Amy   October 18th, 2008 7:54 pm ET

sabuc for Obama   October 18th, 2008 7:54 pm ET

"real Virginia"? "Pro-American areas"? Looks like the seeds of division are sprouting. Shame on you Mr. McCain. If this campaign is preview of your Presidency, you need not be running for the job.

Obama for President.

Now we have the "real Virginia" to go along with those in "pro-America". Seems like the McCain campaign only represents some of us.

Real Virginia? Is that one of the "Pro America" areas of our Nation that Palin refers to?

John, VA   October 18th, 2008 7:52 pm ET

Is there any more proof needed that one ticket is stoking hate and division?

Lets see:
-pro america vs. anti america
-socialist vs. capitalist
-"real" virginia vs. "unreal" virginia

McCainGate   October 18th, 2008 7:52 pm ET

Guess what, Ms. Pfoftotentohauer??

You have to reach out to a lot of demographics in America to win an Presidential election, not just the so-called "real Virginia" and Southerners.

did you notice..   October 18th, 2008 7:52 pm ET

So its not just Mccain or Palin? The entire campaign as foot in mouth syndrom.

I Hope I'm "Pro-America"   October 18th, 2008 7:51 pm ET

Is this sort of like the comments Palin made in North Carolina about being in a "pro-America" area? Can't fail but notice that it comes from the same campaign.

If this is true, I am not just disappointed in the McCain campaign, but I am INCENSED. How dare they accuse any area of any state to be more American than another area of the same state. How dare they make the insinuation that some parts of the country aren't patriotic because they do not represent "small-town America".

If I am Senator McCain, I would get to damage control again and publicly repudiate both the Palin and Pfotenhauer comments claiming because one area has "small-town values" it is more "pro-America" or "real Virginia".

MIKE J.   October 18th, 2008 7:50 pm ET

When I here people say that Palin is a breath of fresh air, I have to wonder about those people.

It's amazing that people who support her for VP do not care that she is unqualified, uneducated and lacking the attributes require to be a heartbeat away from being PRESIDENT!!

SHE HAS LIED ABOUT EVERYTHING since she arrived on the scene. LIED about earmarks, tax cuts, troopergate, etc.....

These people must be very, very DUMB!!!

Marylou   October 18th, 2008 7:49 pm ET

kinda like saying the Republicans are the "real" patriotic people...or the "real" Americans..I am sick of thier name calling...just the issues, folks...thats what "we" want to talk about

anyonmous   October 18th, 2008 7:48 pm ET

(CNN) – McCain adviser Nancy Pfotenhauer made a splash Saturday by drawing a line between northern Virginia and “real Virginia,” which she said is the “part of the state that is more Southern in nature,” a comment that may not sit well with the many residents of the commonwealth residing north of Frederickburg.

Using Pfotenhauer’s definition, however, Barack Obama and his running mate Joe Biden have out-campaigned their Republican rivals by a significant margin in “real Virginia.”

Obama has made nine campaign stops in central, southwest and southeast Virginia: in Martinsville, Lynchburg, Chester, Chesapeake, Fredericksburg, Lebanon, Norfolk and Newport News.

Texas Teacher   October 18th, 2008 7:48 pm ET

Seems like the McCain Camp cannot say anything without offending someone! A general lack of integrity or just plain ignorance. I'm not sure which! Or maybe they are just THAT far out of touch with the American people!

Ken   October 18th, 2008 7:47 pm ET

Thank you, Peter, for knowing what "northern Virginia" is now. With the VRE to take commuters from Fredericksburg to DC, that whole area is now considered northern VA. Then you consider it's just another hour to Richmond, a likely Obama stronghold, and you pretty much have empty space and Kings Dominion in between. Good job ticking off the majority of the state, Nancy!

Josh   October 18th, 2008 7:47 pm ET

Joan   October 18th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

Clearly what she meant by her comments about people form "Metro D.C." moving into Northern Virginia is that too many African Americans have relocated from D.C. into the Northern Virginia suburbs. I was born in and lived in D.C. for most of my life and many of my relatives have relocated in this way over the past 20 years and yes, the demographics have changed in Northern Virgina. I still am shocked, however, with the blatant arrogance and racism of her comment – stated with such ease and not retracted. I was watching MSNBC when she made this comment and the anchor, who was African American, "got it" right away, and that is why he was trying to give her a way out. This is just another example, usually brought up by Palin, of the McCain campaign's outright attempt to divide the country.

As a resident of northern Virginia, I am sick and tired of the McCain campaign trashing the part of the state where I live. First, McCain's brother called us "Communist country", and now this. Well, John McCain better get ready when the 'real Virginia' votes for Barack Obama on November 4th.

Dealt, Lisbon   October 18th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

Great... are Republics drawing a distinction between real Virginia and otherwise Virgina? Republicans play hard and dirty. Is the "real Virginia" hard and dirty? Europe is tired of not liking America, but it's fair to say Bush hasn't helped much and this type of Republicans make it harder to forget him.

Is McCain going to denounce Pfotenhauer? He seems to be perpetually asking others to denounce one thing or another, but I haven't seen him denouncing anything his camps says. Now I know why... those are the real americans. Pity...

Hey VIRGINIA did you people know that there is a north and south as well as a West Virginia. Wow this is 2008 and I though the war between the north and south was over almost 150 years ago. What an idiotic and racisit thing to say.

paul   October 18th, 2008 7:41 pm ET

Before the last debate I had given up on McCain. I had initially thought he was the right man for this election and should be made president. He has the experience, the nobility/patriotic character that I believe a president should have, and is a man with plenty of experience.

But than he continuously underwhelmed me in debates and in press conferences. It didn't, though, put me in Obama's corner. I truly feel that the press and people have accepted this man from Chicago on face value alone. Experience counts because otherwise I would run for president.

Finally McCain showed me that he is the man for the job. In the last debate he spoke about himself and the people of this country. He showed me he understand what we might all be going through and definitely spoke about helping the little guy and not just the bankers/wall street execs. I am not FULLY back in his court, but if McCain continues to election day the way he has since the debate I will vote for him as I hope will 51% of the american people!

Peter (CA)   October 18th, 2008 7:41 pm ET

The McCain campaign continues to try and divide the nation more and more. Their advisers bring out the worst in politics, which is saying a lot.

Speider   October 18th, 2008 7:40 pm ET

Are they dividing states and cities into "real America" now? And where am I? Am I a "real American?" Or am I a leftist, socialist and therefore not deserving of the title "real American?"

The McCain campaign must be, and I am using this word in the real sense for lack of an understanding of why they would flaunt such statements, stupid! This smacks of the candidate who divided the nation into "true Aryans" and "traitors to the Fatherland."

Faye   October 18th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

So according to the McCain campaign, all of the military families, like my family, that live in Fairfax county and veteran families that live in Northern Virginia, dont represent "real" Virginia. Does anybody in the GOP still think? What are they doing dividing the nation in pro-America areas v. anti-American areas and dividing the state of Virginia into the "real" and the fake? Does this make sense to any rational person?

My gosh, let's hurry up and elect Sens. Obama and Biden so we can get on with the business of reuniting this nation!

Farrell, Houston, Tx   October 18th, 2008 7:34 pm ET

Obama is confident that Biden can deliver a message on his own and know what he's talking about. McCain has to shadow Palin like Lieberman had to shadow him for the same reasons, too many stupid mistakes.

Sean   October 18th, 2008 7:34 pm ET

McCain campaign tried to appeal to The Average American with a "Fake Plumber' now they alienate the same people by "Dividing" Virginia into North and South! IS MCCain stuck in the Civil War Era?

Tom, KS   October 18th, 2008 7:33 pm ET

Obama had over 100,000 people at his rally in St. Louis today. Yet for some reason there isn't a word about it on CNN. How bout some fair and balanced reporting. If Palin had that many at a rally we would be blasted with it for days.

Obama is the REAL Change   October 18th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

CNN IS there a SHORTAGE of NEWS today....THIS has to be PUNKED, because it can't be that you honestly think we want to read such non news story.............................

CJ/PA   October 18th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

Just wanted to add that the "Pittsburgh Post-Gazette" a major paper in Southwest Pennsylvania, endorsed Barack Obama for President of the United States!!

some guy in New Hampshire   October 18th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

More "us versus them" tactics designed to win an election by dividing us, resulting in a president who has to unite us in order to govern. This is a cynical, despicable strategy that may win an election but can defeat a presidency before it can begin. Short-sighted stupidity that seeks short-term gain for self by sacrificing the long-term good of the nation. If this tactic puts country first, then Sarah Palin is ready to be added to Mount Rushmore.

Dave   October 18th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

You try your best to find an anti-McCain slant to every story, CNN. I don't know why I bother to read this garbage.

Franky   October 18th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

You know, since we all live in the same country and everybody wants to talk about what is "real" or not, I'll tell you what's real...

Here, in my home state, our state nickname is called, "Land of Lincoln." And do you wanna know what's "real" about that? The "real" thing about that is that Illinois is loved by God, for God, and with God.

Now that's a "real" state...

President George Hussien Washington   October 18th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Another fine example of McCain's "experience and judgement" at work. He seems to like surrounding himself with these "Stepford Wives", can you imagine Ms. Pfotenhauer, with her Masters degree in Economics from Liberty University, providing economic policy advice to the POTUS? That would be even more of a problem than Gov. Palin as VP.

Charlie in Maine   October 18th, 2008 7:30 pm ET

Real Virginia isn't that a dance?? Oh no that the Virginia Reel.

Not even worth making a comment; just a few more days of this negative, division stupidity....

Republican Woman For Obama   October 18th, 2008 7:27 pm ET

Using Pfotenhauer’s definition, however, Barack Obama and his running mate Joe Biden have out-campaigned their Republican rivals by a significant margin in “real Virginia.”
LMAO! yes CNN, yes, This is the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA...NO STATE IS MORE REAL OR PRO-AMERICAN...This is symptomatic of the McCain/Palin campaign, divide and conquer...or at least try anyway! These people are dangerous!

Cindy, CA   October 18th, 2008 7:27 pm ET

The straight talk express has become a disaster in direct proportion to the leadership it represents. Sorely misguided and clueless about the 'reality' of american people. They should all be muffled from ever speaking again... their strategists must be living in the past.... we are beginning the welcome end of the blundering Bush/Cheney error....

and those knucklehead operators are still thinking fear & terror will win another election.... dumb, out of touch, out of tune with the 21st century.

Virginia is going BLUE this time around. We are fed up with all the negative junk the McCain people are putting out and we want our country back so that President Obama can take it ahead to a better time. We in Virginia know President Obama will make us proud once again to have a leader who is loved by the whole world and knows how to behave with dignity and treat other world leaders with the respect they deserve, certainly if not for their persona then for their position. It will be good to have other world leaders look up to our president once again instead of thinking he's a stupid bozo with a big arrogant mouth.

Go Obama/Biden

MD in CT   October 18th, 2008 7:21 pm ET

I would guess that Palin would suggest that the "real Virginia would join Alaska" in leaving the "not real-Virginia" and forming their own country called RUSA or the Real United States of America. Maybe she can get the proAmericans from small towns to move there...but not my town of 7,000 here in New England. But I guess the original 13 states aren't real Americans unless we hunt Moose from a plane.

Christine El Paso   October 18th, 2008 7:21 pm ET

soon it's going to be "real America" virsus what should be "Canada" so far this week I've found out that there are certain parts of the US that are patriotic and parts that are not so Patriotic... Don't tell my Husband he may just leave the US ARMY! And now there are states that have real portions to them versus not so real ones! Give it up McCain camp!

JERRY in Los Angeles   October 18th, 2008 7:21 pm ET

Oh man! It's going to cost a lot of money we don't have to re-do the flag to include the 51st state of ' Fake Virginia'.

I had no idea that the United States Of America contains four Virginias

RealVirginia
West Virginia
Communist Virginia
&
Fake Virginia

Gail   October 18th, 2008 7:21 pm ET

Hey,

NVA has been "different" for a long time now. When I was growing up in the 60s and 70s in NVA there was always talk about NVA secession from Va because people up there did not like paying all the taxes for the rest of the state.

Plus, all you have to do is look at the traffic and the population shifts (my aunt's old place in Annandale is now a gangland for M13). I wonder if they'll all vi=ote for Obama...

Wendy in NC   October 18th, 2008 7:21 pm ET

The Repub campaign just needs to STOP now before they alienate everyone in their path. I live in NC, will vote for Obama, and I don't believe Greensboro is any more 'pro-american' than the southeast part of the state. McCain's brother has already referred to part of Virginia as 'communist county' and now the bobblehead spokeswoman further divides the state into the 'real' Virginia and...what...the fake Virginia?

Betty, Virginia   October 18th, 2008 7:20 pm ET

I'm TOTALLY sick of the McCain campaign.

First I'm not pro-American and now I'm not a "real" Virginian. WHO THE H#LL DO THEY THINK THEY ARE DEFINING ME?

Well let me tell you what I am. I'm a proud American who's proud of her state of Virginia who will be VOTING BLUE across the ticket this year – and I voted for Bush twice... In fact, I've voted republican since 1980.

who are the ones dividing America now...?

tigerakabj   October 18th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

Real Virginia? I guess they really do want a divided America.

I can't wait until this election is over. McCain is the most disgraceful man alive.

Are you listening Arizona? Throw him out. He doesn't deserve to be elected dog catcher.

Obama/Biden 2008/2012.

Aaron from Ohio   October 18th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

The "real Virginia"? More "southern in nature"? Why does the McCain camp keep piling on with this two Americas stuff? We are one nation. We are one people. It's OK to have two parties. It's OK to support whichever candidate you want. This constant message they put out makes it sound like only their party is patriotic and is going to "do the right thing". Enough already. All of these code phrases isn't code. EVERYBODY understands what you're implying. MOST Americans are smarter than Governor Palin. You're not fooling anyone.

Christiane from Germany   October 18th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

Miss Pf.... dont know what she say. Better first thinking , then talking

Chris F.   October 18th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

I guess only places that are conservative are more real tahn other parts of the Contry. I do not support McCain but I am a veteran and an American. I love and would die for this nation just like all other patriots. I do not have to support McCAin/Palin to be an American. McCain/Palin are the truth ati-Americans. We have freedoms in the nation that the last 8 years has bee supressed by fear and lies..

Fred Crockett   October 18th, 2008 7:18 pm ET

Nancy should start looking for a job in another field. Since the campaign started, she has been the most viscious, lemon-sucking aide on either side, maliciously babbling on and on with her inane platitudes. I am a conservative Canadian, but this strange woman would casue me to vote for anyone but her champion of the moment.

Jose   October 18th, 2008 7:18 pm ET

The flack Nancy Pfotenhauer all but waves the Confederate flag in a failing attempt to save Virginia for the Confederacy, er, John "descendant of slave-owners" McCain.

Former Republican voting for Obama/Biden   October 18th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

Nancy Pfotenhauer is one of McCain's top ten for earmarks that worked in his campaign. McCain has to remove her from his campaign when he got caught. They is one left nd that is Palin. She is still there and still spewing lies and dividing this great nation.

ready for change   October 18th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

VOTE OBAMA-BIDEN, MCCAIN& PALIN ARE SO NEGATIVE, THEY CAN'T TALK ABOUT THE ISSUES, WITH THE ELECTION SO CLOSE HOW COULD THEY STILL FOCUS ON ALL THIS CHEAP CAMPAIGNING& AND CARING MORE ABOUT SNL THAN THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, THEY ARE THE WORST CANADIATES THAT I HAVE EVER WITNESSED. THE AMERICAN PEOPLE DESERVE BETTER THAN THIS, VOTE OBAMA-BIDEN

Linda   October 18th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

Notice CNN does not say the Miami Herald endorsed Obama in its catchy headline. It says McCain was endorsed by the Tampa. Come on CNN. you are better than that!!! CNN appears to be in the tank for McCain. Please be objective in your reporting.

j   October 18th, 2008 7:16 pm ET

Does gutter politics have a bottom? I used to think McCain was a decent person. Not so anymore.

Lee from FL   October 18th, 2008 7:16 pm ET

pro-America areas and real Virginia are where mccain and pain supporters live.

Lilarose in Bandon-by-the-Sea, Oregon   October 18th, 2008 7:16 pm ET

If you support Obama, don't get complacent thinking because he is ahead in the polls that he is going to win the election.

YOU HAVE TO VOTE!

AND YOUNG PEOPLE–you are the culprits most of the time–lots of talk and no do!

I have never missed an election since JFK–not a local, state, or national election. I worked on Robert Kennedy's campaign until the moment he was murdered.

Obama is a special man like JFK and RFK. I was there then and I know it now!

Do your duty and you will elect the best candidates! OBAMA/BIDEN

FreeNLovIt   October 18th, 2008 7:16 pm ET

We all take our turns to row this SHIP called Mother America and just because I'm in the middle row or front row, it doesnt mean I am not a 'REAL' American.

C W   October 18th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

Yep, that's the McCain/Palin ticket: divisive, insulting, nauseatingly dumb. I lived in Alexandria for five years and felt pretty "real" up there.

The whole state is filled with lovely people, top to bottom. McCain and Palin once again demonstrated they're idiots!

FreeNLovIt   October 18th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

Real Virginia? Does that make the rest of us who ALSO pay taxes, fake Americans?

jojodancer1119   October 18th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

I live in Richmond, VA and I'm voting for Obama all the way! There's no way I would give McCain and that simple-minded Palin a chance at all!

mmd   October 18th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

In regard to the aforementioned article on new paper endorsements. Why would you have to read the article to learn that the topic is misleading, one paper backed Obama and one paper backed mccain. You never know it from the topic. One paper backed mccain and the other paper praised both men.

You have the nerve to have a fact check for other people.
SHAME ON YOU CNN

FL Rep for Obama   October 18th, 2008 7:12 pm ET

So now McCain staffers are dividing the states, just as their negative and FALSE attacks are dividing the nation. Yes, that's what we need in the White House...a President who divides instead of one who unites. Early voting starts in FL on Monday. I'll be racing to the polls to vote Democratic the first time in my life. This country needs REAL CHANGE = OBAMA! By the way...we Central Floridians could care less if the Tampa Tribute endorses McCain. The endorsed Bush both times two...show how "in touch" the newspaper is with its subscribers...

Chris from STL   October 18th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

This is another example of the divisive nature of the republican party.

Bob Virginia   October 18th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

Most Northern Virginia people can read and write so tthe MCain Palin ticket will have some problems here.

Barbara - 65 yr old white female in NC   October 18th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

The McCain/Palin campaign just keeps drawing divisive lines in our states and in this country. WHY? McCain has become one of the most dishonorable people I've ever known.

The same people that brought you Bush/Cheney for the past 8 years are now presenting McCain/Palin.

Gonna fall for it again? Not me. Not this time. Not ever again.
