Palin discussed GOP robocalls and socialism on Sunday.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (CNN) – All of a sudden, Sarah Palin is eager to meet the press.

John McCain’s running mate took questions from her press corps for the second time in three days late Sunday after flying into Colorado Springs. But Palin was not completely on message.

Wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and standing on a breezy tarmac, Palin said that if she had her way, the McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee would not be flooding battleground states with automated phone calls tying Barack Obama to former radical William Ayers, as they have done over the last week.

Several top Republicans, including Senators Susan Collins and Norm Coleman, have condemned the tactic. Asked about those criticisms, Palin at first dismissed the matter as "inside baseball stuff" and said it's "some of the campaign top brass’s call on that."

But when asked if she would approve the use of robocalls if she were running the campaign, Palin said she’d probably chart a different course.

"If I called all the shots, and if I could wave a magic wand," Palin said, "I would be sitting at a kitchen table with more and more Americans, talking to them about our plan to get the economy back on track and winning the war, and not having to rely on the old conventional ways of campaigning that includes those robocalls, and includes spending so much money on the television ads that, I think, is kind of draining out there in terms of Americans' attention span.

"They get a bit irritated with just being inundated," she continued, "and you're seeing a lot of that of course with the huge amounts of money that Barack Obama is able to spend on his ads and his robocalls also."

Ultimately, the Alaska governor said she was not calling for an end to the automated calls, and she did not say if she had spoken to campaign officials at any point about the calls.

Palin was also asked if she and McCain believe that Barack Obama’s tax plan, which would raise taxes on Americans making over $250,000 and provide tax credits to middle and lower-income workers, is socialist. At a campaign rally in New Mexico earlier Sunday, Palin said Obama wants to "experiment with socialism."

"There are socialist principles to that, yes," Palin said of Obama's plan. "Taking more from a small business or small business owners or from a hard working family and then redistributing that money according to a politician’s priorities. There are hints of socialism in there."

Asked if she thinks the government’s plan to inject billions of taxpayer dollars directly into troubled banks amounts to socialism - a belief held by many conservative legislators, talk radio hosts and bloggers - Palin said, "No, I do not."

"I believe that there are those measures that had to be taken by congress to shore up not only the housing market but the credit markets also, to make sure that that’s not frozen, so that our small businesses have opportunities to borrow, and that was the purpose, of course, and that part of the bailout and the shoring of the banks," she said.

Sarah Palin is the ultimate "robo call" candidate. At a time in American history when candidates are packaged and sold like never before, she is a dream come true for the people paid to get her elected.

Sarah Palin was brought into this campaign like an exciting new product. She was developed in Alaska by the Republican Party, where her talent was encouraged and the various myths surrounding her were developed.

She was rolled out as a last ditch "secret weapon" when it looked like John McCain's campaign had nothing to lose.

The same kind of people who think TV characters are real and that movies represent reality are the target of the Sarah Palin production. Unfortunately, there are many people like that.

Whenever you see something like "Sarah Palin thinks it's too bad McCain is pulling out of Michigan" or "Sarah Palin thinks robo calls are just too darn bad we have to do that", it is a very carefully scripted development of the Sarah Palin Product Image. It is to make her seem independent, but really she will say whatever she is told.

Sarah Palin is not a leader, she can provide no leadership for America. She has been programmed to say "socialist" "socialist" and "Joe the Plumber" and "Drill, drill, drill" and all the other little chants that the McCain campaign is based on, to block out any serious discussion of what the next 4 years of American life will be.

I am so sick of the right wing extremists that have taken over the Republican party. I am voting for Barack Obama!

Republican for change   October 20th, 2008 4:47 am ET

Ya think?

Please spare us the Obama socialism also.

Bush Sr - 4 years of economic meltdown
Clinton - 8 years of economic prosperity
Bush Jr - 8 years of absolute disaster leading to Wall St socialism

McCain's gonna rear his head back into Arizona this Nov 4 boooyyy.

You can count on it lady! You betcha ;)

Anonymous   October 20th, 2008 4:32 am ET

why allof a sudden, that she tries to be decent, you make the call?

Nathaniel Mounce (Somerset, KY)   October 20th, 2008 4:31 am ET

Whether McCain wins or not, I hope that Miss Palin is a Presidential candidate herself one day. I think she would do wonderfully. By expressing her dislike of both the robo-calls and the smear tactics, we see good judgment and that she is in touch with America.

former gop   October 20th, 2008 4:28 am ET

So now let's not say Obama's a terrorist because that's backfiring, let's say he's a socialist and involved in voter fraud – even tho McCain, too, supported ACORN.

This wasn't off the cuff Palin stating she wouldn't do robocalls pushing the terrorist angle. Every step of this has been planned. This was the Republican campaign one again trying to manipulate people.

tyme4chaing   October 20th, 2008 4:21 am ET

I am also irritated with you Palin. You're so fake you almost got away with your firing scandal but that didn't happen. Your qualifications for VP is crap. You just don't measure up after all the spin you been causing. You're not liked anywhere. Please quit now while you still have some dignity left.

I'm an Obama supporter, but I must say I agree with you here, Palin. This is one of the few times you've impressed me. Sounds a little like the McCain of old. But it's too little too late, at least for me.

And how about the national election as a national holiday? How has that not happened yet? What, can't we spare an extra 1 day in 4 years to contribute to our democracy? It's shameful, America.

Ashamed of Arizona   October 20th, 2008 4:14 am ET

Of course, government owned banks isn't a socialist principle...because McCain voted for it! If it would have served her positively, I'm sure her answer would have been different.

tennyson   October 20th, 2008 4:12 am ET

both mcCain and palin are just confused ,they really dont know how to run their campaingn they differ on every topic , can anyone bail them out . oh my God ,mcpalin is fighting hard, but i will end nowhere

Dare Nigeria   October 20th, 2008 4:12 am ET

I could remember that in 2000, when GWB's Campaign used the same Robocalls against Senator McCain, He said that the hottest place in hell was reserved for the authors of the Robocalls.

For him to turn around, in his despiration, to use the same Robocalls against a fellow Senator of the United States has shown us what part of hell he would go to.

It is so pathetic when one sees a purpoted hero he has admired over decades to stoop this low It is like seeing Esau selling his birthright to Jacob because of a plate of poridge.

I empathize with Senator McCain, bearing in mind that at 72, this is his last chance at having a shot at the Presidency. The ambition he has nursed since Hanoi.

But he needs to leave the stage with his head held high. But at this state of negativity he, Mrs Palin and the RNC have displayed in these elections season, whether he wins or loses in the GE, I doubt if he will feel good with himself in the morning of November 5, if his shameful campaign is anything to go by – Except he has no shame.

Qwerty   October 20th, 2008 4:10 am ET

using tax payer money and giving it to large corporations is socialism! We have just nationalized the credit industry. Palin=idiot

MarkieBee   October 20th, 2008 4:09 am ET

Every time she speaks to the media she costs McCain votes. It's no wonder that Joe The Plumber has given more press conferences than Palin.

The Bluest Skies are in Seattle   October 20th, 2008 4:09 am ET

Is this what s called talking out both sides of your mouth McPalin ?
You have no problems spewing hate, lies continually from the first minute you spoke at the convention and to this day you are still spewing hate, lies ,low road you have reached your lowest point .
Even lie about their lies ..
McWar lost all his memory so they Re-programmed , Re-booted
him after Bushed for 8 years .

Not This Time .

Martin (England)   October 20th, 2008 4:09 am ET

I don't think the robo-calls are that much of a problem.

Firstly unlike the last 2 elections the media are actually tackling smears (not letting Fox get anti-democratic smear machines like Swiftboat Veterans work for the Karl Rove etc). This time round it appears that the media are angry at being used and fooled by people like Rove.

Secondly the American electorate would probably choose Obama even if he had known and been friends with Ayers; because knowing one reformed Terrorist would be better than carrying on the lie the Bush regime which is more dangerous to the U.S than Al Qaeda could dream of. The last 8 years the biggest security risk to the United States has been its President.

Sam SixPack   October 20th, 2008 4:08 am ET

Well, now that even the candidates are saying it, are you still refusing to post comments that include the word socialism?

Isn't "spread the wealth" a Karl Marx idea?

Why can't you print that?

What's wrong with the truth?

Scott in Norfolk   October 20th, 2008 4:08 am ET

Go Palin.

sandee in Portland   October 20th, 2008 4:08 am ET

What the heck is the difference between robocalling saying Obama's pals with a terrorist or saying at her rallys like she's been doing. Same thing...and she didn't seem to have any compunctions about saying the same things to incite people at her rallys. Not only is she dishonest, abuses her power as Governor to get back at a guy for divorcing her sister, but she is a hypocrite as well.

dede-ole   October 20th, 2008 4:07 am ET

this lady got a problem.when do you disapprove your own handwrtting .these robocalls are slizzy by every nature they are a disgrace to the mccain/pallin camp.i guess it is burn everything on your way out.Obama might win by a bigger margin than our wildest dream.go Obama,i hope everyone make their voice heard by voting.

fitsum   October 20th, 2008 4:06 am ET

socialist approach is by far different from obama's approach to the economy. his approach equates in some sense to the bailout scheme. MCcain supported the bailout, does that make him a socialist ?. Is that not a kind distribution the wealth around according to a politician’s priorities ?

Scott of Utah   October 20th, 2008 4:00 am ET

I love it when she sells out the campaign to the press. It makes them look so disorganized. She also did this when she said she disagreed with the campaign for abandoning Michigan. Its almost like she knows this ship is sunk but is trying to say "its not my fault, I'd do it differently."

La Von K Hummel-   October 20th, 2008 3:57 am ET

Sarah Palin will, and wants to call the shots. Maybe She will. she thinks she is Nooka noo., which means Frozen she Queen, and it means she was born to be the Nooka noo of the world. Socialism is a big word for Ms. Palin. Not sure she understands it. Having an understanding of an issue however doesn't stop her from attacking with it.

I guess she heard that "Joe the Plumber" has done more interviews than she has.....so she's talking.
She can spin the "robocalls" all she wants but they clearly state – Paid for by John McCain. Why pretend to be offended with the calls when it's the same ole mudslinging lies, inuendo & fear tactics that come out of her mouth at all their rallys.

Jagadish   October 20th, 2008 3:40 am ET

either McCain or Obama, nobody in this world can be worse than Bush, with regard to Sarah Palin her language and her support base has deep undertone of racism, wuuuhhh, america is supposed to be pillar of freedom and democracy. I think Mccain will lose due to his running mate

Edith Ann   October 20th, 2008 3:39 am ET

Does Sarah Palin suffer from racing thoughts?
It seems that some of her sentences are either 1 and 1/2 sentences or 1/2 sentences.
How can she say the bailout was not socialism? Did you ask if she thought it was theft?
Oh, how she sounds as if she wished her name was first on that ticket!
Look out, John, she'll be lookin' to shoot you down next! She wants what you've got now! She is probably praying for your death as I write this!!!!!!!
That's what you get for choosing someone you met for 15 minutes as the person that would take over, in case of your death, to be president of our beloved country. How patriotic was that, John?

5% of the people = 95% of the wealth. If so, then let them generate 95% of our tax revenue. We already have socialism now. The poor provide welfare for the rich, who currently only pay 60% of the nation's taxes. How does this add up?

Don   October 20th, 2008 3:34 am ET

But on the other side of the coin.. Palin, you're an idiot. Reversing George Bush's tax cuts is not going to send this country spiraling into socialism... We already have socialism in this country that we all accept and approve of though... Like Medicare, Social Security, Public Schools, AFDC, even subsidies to farmers (the same ones usually screaming that Obama is a socialist and that they don't want socialism in this country).

All   October 20th, 2008 3:24 am ET

And how can anyone who has been introduced to the nation all of 6-8 weeks ago, be so supported by so many. could it be she is the last great white hope. Chris   October 20th, 2008 3:18 am ET

Sarah Palin evidently doesn't know what the word socialism means, or as most republicans, picks and chooses when the definition applies.

She doesn't believe that nationaliing banks amounts to socialism? Obviously, she is clueless.

What kind of double standard is that. The largest government bail out in history orchicstated by a Repulican administration isn't socialism, but Obama wanting to repeal a tax cut made by the Bush administration is socialism? Fear, fear, fear that's all they have.

What John McCain is doing With these robocalls that try to pair Obama & Ayers is beyond despicable. Not only has he been decried by his own party but now by even Palin. I sincerely had loads of respect for McCain before this race, but i am surprised by these acts of an obviously desperate man.
As for Palin on socialism; i don't think the world will hold their breath for Palin's philosophy on any economic or taxation policy. In her opinion Obama is a socialist for try to engage in progressive taxation but the Bush governments bailout that gives billions to corporations is not. John McCain must wish he could go back 3 months ago before he had to make the VP Pick.

The only thing Mcain/Palin (or is it Palin/McCain now) has left is to attack. To Take an issue or comment and turn it around to make it pure fiction to inject fear into the people is a tool the communist party used very effectivly in Eastern Europe years ago.
The Republican ticket has brought the American presidential race to an all time low.

Palin for President! 2012! She's showed more honesty than either of the candidates this year.
I'm so sick of Obama's lies. He wants to give a tax break to a Walmart cashier? Thanks to George Bush's tax cut for the poor, a Walmart cashier already pays NO tax. Read my lips – Obama's going to raise taxes. My dad's over 80, retired living off social security and selling the few stocks and CDs he has left after a lifetime of hard work and managing to save and invest a little. Raising the capital gains tax like Obama wants to do will hurt him significantly.

Ash   October 20th, 2008 3:00 am ET

I hope this comment will be posted.

Unfortunately CNN does not show the Obama-robocalls that are spreading out to uninformed voters in key-battleground states, where he is lying his way around by stating that he will "tax only families who earn more than $250,000 per year." This is a simple lie. Please CNN ... do some investigative research in how the Obama campaign is hiding the fact that small businesses who earn much less than that amount will be taxed if they do not (mostly cannot!) provide healthcare for their employees. My parents are small business owners of a restaurant named Quiznos. They do not have healthcare themselves, how in God's name should they provide healthcare for their four employees? Also, under the Obama-Tax plan, the self-employment tax will be increased.

I do not know why CNN and other media outlets do not clarify these blatant lies made by the Obama Campaign.

I am cringing on this one...she is going to ruin the week for McCain with this one.

She actually sounds somewhat brighter except if she did do a little more reading on the meaning of socialism then she would see that this 'element' of socialism has been persent in America all along. The government taxes so that they can take care of the basics, example the infrasture of the country...that too has 'elements' of socialism.

Yikes, I do feel sorry for her. Its really not her fault that she was thrown into this by McCain.

Palin is an fool and nothing more than a political opportunist.

From the Encyclopedia Britannica:
SOCIALISM: social and economic doctrine that calls for public rather than private ownership or control of property and natural resources. According to the socialist view, individuals do not live or work in isolation but live in cooperation with one another. Furthermore, everything that people produce is in some sense a social product, and everyone who contributes to the production of a good is entitled to a share in it. Society as a whole, therefore, should own or at least control property for the benefit of all its members

Sounds like the BAILOUT is PURE Socialism.

Two more things that "hint of socialism": the Permanent Fund check that each Alaskan resident receives annually, and the $1200 Alaska Resource Rebate that was added to this year's Permanent Fund check.

If Palin actually read Obama's stances on the issues instead of relying on her cheat sheet, she would understand why intelligent voters think she is an idiot.

After reading that article I think it may be a good idea for Palin to return to her small town in Alaska, where people have short attention spans and are the real Americans. It may be a good idea for her and the top dude to take Alaska out of the United States of America since the rest of us are not Americans and have short attention spans. I think she is right. I think Mrs Palin will say or do anything to become Vice President but what will she do when she has that position? I have only heard her talk about limited things that the McCain party let's her talk about. She should try giving some specific actions she will take when she is in office. She should also start acting a little more presidential vs gooooooobernitorial!

Mr McCain thank you for your long career in politics.

See, it`s been said by many republicans that Palin was choosen to be a kinda secretary to McCain. Now, the evidence is apparent. A supposed to be vica president that never knew of the robocalls nor would have agreed to them had she known! Moreso, she just touched on the out-datedness of John McCain, in line with Gen. Colin Powell. I guess the only thing that is true but uneasy for Palin to talk about, is the fact that she would have voted for Obama, had McCain not visited her!! I read too that Mr.Palin is a secret Obama admirer. True word?

SUSAN STANSFIELD   October 20th, 2008 2:35 am ET

i would like to know why cnn and all the net works reported obamas crowed yesterday as 100,000 when it was clear the crowed was almost twice that many the over seas media got it right in australia and the uk they reported 175,000 in the crowed . cnn and other networks consistantly down play obamas croweds and play up mcains tiny croweds . we have the evidence we have the reports in other western news pappers . its discusting cnn . it seems miss palin from this political ticker addition has little to know influence over the campaign , jusy who is in control of mcains campaign becouse the candidates dont seem to have much say at all as evisenced bye this .imagaine if mcain ran america like he has run is election campaign . no thanks .

JackieLee   October 20th, 2008 2:34 am ET

Forget Palin's questionable definition of socialism. Here's the choice, a progressive income tax where everyone who makes less than 250,000 gets a tax saving, or a 700,000,000,000 towards distorting market consequences.

Which sounds more egregious?

Kwame   October 20th, 2008 2:32 am ET

I think this woman call Palin is an idiot. How could you answer yes to a question regarding Obama's tax plan and no to gov't injection of billions into the economy. Just may be she does not even know what socialism is all about. Please somebody should explain to her what it is. Wolf could?

"inside baseball stuff"?

Obama used the term "inside ball" during the first debate. Coincidence?

Wow, I kind of understood what she was saying.

Y   October 20th, 2008 2:21 am ET

If the calls were working she would be saying something else. Is McCain aware that Palin is running for his position? Just another sign that the Republicans and their ticket are confused and are not prepared to lead the country.

I'm a small business and a contractor. Yes, my wife and I make more than $250.000.00 a year between her government salary and our profits which includes equipment purchases. My business hits slow periods like now. I need the extra money to weather the storm. Overhead does not get frozen like bank credit. I still owe. Barack will put me out of business.

Tariq   October 20th, 2008 2:18 am ET

And Palin calls herself a reformer and a maverick??! She can't even take on her own campaign officials... how is she going to take on top government officials in Washington? Whether it is right or wrong thing to...at least try to take control of your campaign. Of course you have say and you do have a magic wand....you are VP nominee!! If YOU don't have a say in your own campaign, who does?

Ben   October 20th, 2008 2:17 am ET

Who actually thinks that Palin knows what socialism is? I really have a hard time taking her seriously. I have zero confidence in her ability to be a capable vice president at this point, and any time she opens her mouth, she either contradicts her campaign's policies/actions/messages or just makes no sense at all. Not good.

Andy from Ohio but living in Texas   October 20th, 2008 2:17 am ET

McCain admonished robocalls when used against him in 2000 by Bush. Now, he seems to embrace the tactic. "I'm not President Bush"? Maybe not, but you are certainly taking a lot of cues from him.

Diana   October 20th, 2008 2:16 am ET

is she going against her own party?

Paul Farahvar   October 20th, 2008 2:15 am ET

I hope the republican party finally realizes that in picking Palin, presumably to appease the base, they have now polarized the race, and the country. "Country first?" I don't think so.

It's really sad that Sarah Palin could be the next vice president of the United States and she can't get her point across without using fragments and run on sentences. I'm not sure I've heard her string together more than two complete sentences!!

I'd like to remind Palin and all her Right-wing Fundamentalist Christians that Jesus was constantly criticized by the Scribes and Pharisees for "palling around" with sinners and publicans. Did that make him a sinner? Did it tarnish the reputations of the apostles for keeping company with him? Had he been a Republican, he would certainly have avoided the immoral and the tax collectors! He'd have been down at the Temple in cahoots with the money-changers! What he taught was for the rich to sell what they had and give to the poor; ergo, he was a socialist of the first water. "It is easier," he said, "for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven." There is no way under the sun that the true Christian can be against "spreading the wealth around" so that a minority is not "filthy rich" while a vast majority barely ekes out an exisistence. If they are, should call themselves something else - like Capitalists, since the love of money is their true religion. They are certainly not Christians!

GObama   October 20th, 2008 2:04 am ET

Left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Erratic! I imagine their administration would be run about as effectively as their campaign.

Beta   October 20th, 2008 2:03 am ET

"But when asked if she would approve the use of robocalls if she were running the campaign, Palin said she’d probably chart a different course." Wow talk about throwing your boss under a bus.... Also I thought we still has a House and Senate... I didn't know only the President makes all spending / tax decisions... hmmmm

Trevor   October 20th, 2008 2:03 am ET

She might not be "on message" with what the McCain campaign believes, but it's good to hear what she actually believes and would want to do, if she had a "magic wand". I like the side of Palin I have been seeing since the VP Debate.

McCain, Obama and Biden have been working on their message, their White House mission, for over twenty years. Palin has been at it for 8 weeks? I expected to see blunders.

Now I am seeing the confident Palin who, now can talk the talk not just walk the walk (since she has proven she can walk the walk the past 12 years, watch Palin Revealed on CNN). Though it seems people would rather have someone who has walked the walk, not just talk the talk (like Obama).

Kathy   October 20th, 2008 2:02 am ET

Have any of the media asked them what she means by shoring up? She uses this term a lot, but I don't think she knows what it means.
I hope we only have two more weeks of her phoniness, and then she floats on back to Alaska land.

Mary, ex-PUMA   October 20th, 2008 1:58 am ET

Got to hand it to her. The woman has ambition. She knows that McCain has no chance so she's setting herself up for a 2012 run by throwing him under the bus.

Anthony   October 20th, 2008 1:58 am ET

1) Too little too late, in this little "getting to know Palin" game.
2)She too is guilty of Robo-Calling
3)She is the vice presidential nominee, not the first on the ticket, so what she would have done differently is a mute point.

Im pretty sure the Republican Party will eventually hold her responsible for the McCain defeat (especially after people like Collin Powel called her out) and will see to it that she has no role in the party's future...

SARAH PALIN = FAIL

Timothy Wanga   October 20th, 2008 1:57 am ET

Powell's endorsement of Obama is conclusive-it wasn't a hurriedly made decision and as a matter of fact wasn't an easy one.

Tin   October 20th, 2008 1:57 am ET

"Spreading the Wealth" is socialism beyond disguise.

He said the threshold to higher taxes is $250K, yet knowing all politicans, but by the time the bill is presented for his signature, it will be at least halfed, like $125K. Lets not also forget that the income are not just earned income, but also interst, dividends, etc, too.

Socialism is Obama's fundamental principle.

Lets not allow him to fool any American.

penkilk   October 20th, 2008 1:56 am ET

So buying US banks doesn't even qualify as an experiment in socialism? And this mythical 40% that doesn't pay taxes does pay taxes. Right out of meager pay checks like me, through rent which is taxed, and quite a few other things.

And I like how very few small businesses net 250k in profits, but small business is the cornerstone of their defense. Why not call it big business tax break?

Ask anybody that's rich, it takes money to make money. Or at least it makes it far easier, so wealth naturally accumulates. And the more that money accumulates with few the less just free and equal our society becomes. Providing counterbalances to this obvious truth is not dangerous communist socialism. Doing nothing about it is naive pandering to the powerful.

Ken   October 20th, 2008 1:55 am ET

Now that is the first smart thing she has said since leaving Alaska. Now it is ok for her to go back home and learn something else good to say. All the negative things on both sides are not necessary. I understand that both sides say the other started it but just because one jumps off a cliff is no reason for the other to follow.

Vik   October 20th, 2008 1:54 am ET

Maybe if Palin took more interests in traveling and learning about different forms of government, she'd be able to give sound opinion. It's a global economy now folks, small minds and small politics will not help the US, better start thinking big in order to be competitive. I for one want companies to stay in the US and provide jobs, give fair wages and start caring about all of us. We buy their products, use their services and we deserve better then this mess we're in!

femi   October 20th, 2008 1:52 am ET

This clown of a Vice president does not even know what socialism is! ..but then, so do many republicans.

Obama-cans   October 20th, 2008 1:52 am ET

I think at this point in the game, Mrs. Palin should not be giving her opinion, since they sound uneducated, incorreherent, and simply ignorant of a VP running mate. Mr. McCain, please tell her to read her lines and stick with them.

cyrusk   October 20th, 2008 1:50 am ET

Socialism?

didn't Sarah Palin and members of her family got check from Alaska Government treasury ???

What do you call that?
Redistribution of wealth, maybe??
That is socialism!

Mild Rubio   October 20th, 2008 1:50 am ET

My sister and I just got back from Europe and the first leg of our tour was London. On first day after our friend picked us up from Heathrow Airport, to save gasoline, we went straight to Windsor Castle and parked it there. After overstaying for almost an hour, our friend forgot to put another coin on meter. They clamped our friend car tires. And the penalty was outrageous 120.00 pounds, even the British couple we met later told us. That is terrible and they said. It is because they have a socialist gov. What a way to treat tourists like us. They think we have a lot of money. No way we will go back again there. It is their lost. We toured around the metro and around London and it is dirty and filthy. I guess people forgot to do their part to clean. They got used to Government doing everything for them. It is still a blessing living in America. Mccain/Palin team knows fully well that the government can't do it alone.

Huh!!!!!!   October 20th, 2008 1:49 am ET

Just saying this to seem like she is against McCain policies. You can't fool us Ms. Palin. You are the one who started the whole mess. Mr. Powell put you and McCain on blast and now you want to change your dialogue.

Steve in Las Vegas,NV   October 20th, 2008 1:49 am ET

chan   October 20th, 2008 1:48 am ET

wow, how stupid is that? To say one distribution of monies is more socialist than another? They seem the same just on different scales. Taking from the poor and giving to the rich is not my idea of a good thing! Obama '08!

Eli -- Milwaukee   October 20th, 2008 1:44 am ET

looks like Palin is not up to date with the McCain campaign talking points..lol.

Jill   October 20th, 2008 1:44 am ET

Sarah Palin's not too smart. She can't distinguish between the like actions of taking our taxpayer money and giving it to the companies that lost their own through bad business decisions. How is that not like socialism, but Obama's taxing the top 5% and using that money in government budgets is socialism? Better still, we could ask her the somewhat harder question of our history? Was Eisenhower a socialist? Under his administration America's wealthiest paid a far higher tax burden than anyone does today. And last, if Palin wouldn't use robocalls, why is this happening? Is she saying McCain does, or is this a slip and admission that McCain/Palin doen't even have control of their own campaign? What does that imply were they to be elected?

Gerry   October 20th, 2008 1:44 am ET

I was under the impression that wealth from the oil industry was allotted among the Alaskan citizenry, if this is true isn't that a form of wealth spreading, and if so can one deduce that Governor Palin not only benefited from it but supported it as well?

sandee in Portland   October 20th, 2008 1:43 am ET

Ah Ha, now they're going for the good cop, bad cop routine. Sarah's the good cop (with her own personal agenda to run again in 4 years) and McCain's the bad cop (because this is the last chance he'll have). Both of these people make me sick and very ashamed that our great country elects politicians of this caliber.

Nick   October 20th, 2008 1:32 am ET

If Obama gets the Presidency this country will be in a world of hurt. I think most Americans who will probably vote for Obama have no Idea what he plans on doing if he gets the Presidency. And for those Americans think he is going to help them out they are dead wrong, you can be sure of one thing he will raise taxes, he will make businesses shut down and jobs will be lost, and I would not be suprised if the U. S. has another terroist attack if he is president. As far as Colin Powell goes I feel he is a trader and a coward for what he did.

arlene, CA   October 20th, 2008 1:32 am ET

What irritates me is Palin. The robocalls should be condemned. It is disgraceful & a very hateful attack by their campaign to destroy Obama. Obama is going to win & the mccain camp is getting extremely desperate, nothing is off limits, anything to try & win. It will not work mccain, not this time. no mccain, no palin, no way, no how.

A man of Conscience   October 20th, 2008 1:32 am ET

Palin really needs to stop questioning the campaign's tactics. She's the VP candidate; she needs to accept McCain's decisions and not publicly ramble on about 'having her way.'

chuck   October 20th, 2008 1:31 am ET

Palin's world view (the Palin doctrine) is bankrupt. She writes off swaths of the country that do not worship her as not "pro-American". She criticizes taxes on the rich, the top 5% of earners, as socialism while she sees nothing wrong with taxes going to wall street investment banks. She asks to be held accountable for troopergate, but doesn't cooperate with the investigation. She claims to be running a transparent campaign but she's given less interviews than Joe the Plumber.

I would suggest that john mccain knows all about these dirty low down tactics. he would do anything to sit his decrepid behind in the white house; after all he thinks it is owed to him. all one has to do is look at how far he has gone already. lies & half truths ad nauseum.

Seriously, are people actually voting for her? I would rather vote for Tina Fey. I think she can see Mexico from her San Diego house-which means she has just as much foriegn policy experience. (I bet more).

Pretty obvious hypocracy on the "socialism" name-calling, but give her a point on the robo-calls comment.

Baked Alaska   October 20th, 2008 1:23 am ET

So Palin would 'chart a different course', would she? That is what McCain has to really worry about, a bonafide maverick who has no respect for other people or their opinions. That especially includes her presidential running mate. Palin can't wait to get to the White House and start bulling her way around as she has done in Alaska. It's her style.
PS. The United States 'experiments' with socialism every day. We send our children to public schools, we use public libraries, public roads, rest stops, bridges, parks, waterways, sidewalks, law-enforcement, fire departments, etc.---- all run by taking people's money and redistributing it. Get a brain you guys.

Any person who claims that Sarah Palin is fit for any public office let alone the post of vice president is either a fool or is fooling others. Last eight years, we've been praying that the bumbling buffoon president survives so his wicked VP doesn't take over. Now we would have to pray that the wicked president survives so the bumbling buffoon vice president doesn't take over.

Um, that's confusing since Sarah Palin was the one who joined the discussion late...and actually brought Bill Ayers "Obama Pales with Terroist" issue up. The McCain/Palin campaign is so full of it.

Totally off topic...isn't it crazy how these gas prices are going down...my mother predicts the Republican party will lower the gas prices until election day...OBAMA sure will have a mess to clean up when he gets into office.

She's an idiot. So she can stand up there and shoot these lies, but when the robocalls do it and look unpopular, she says they shouldn't do it. She's just ridiculous.

Michael   October 20th, 2008 1:20 am ET

After reading and hearing Sarah Palins comments on calling Barack Obama experimenting with socialism, but not the government's socialist bailout of our troubled financial economy. She just doesn’t get it. This is scary. She is not complete in politics.

i'll give her a small amount of props for condemning the robocalls. obama doesn't use them, he has real people calling.
i'd like to know how many small businesses are going to be taxed. from what i hear very few make more than 250,000. you count profit after all the bills and workers are paid. 93% of small businesses will do better under obama's tax plan. they will pay less taxes, no capitol gains taxes, and get a tax credit for any new employee.

Why is Gov. Palin distancing herself from her own campaign? Is she preparing for the inevitable loss? Is she setting herself up for her own run at the White House in future years? It seems that way to me.

David in upstate NY   October 20th, 2008 1:18 am ET

Sarah just go home to your ice palace. You are just so stupid. I think you wear a ear peice to have someone on the staff give you the answer when you actually do take a question. By the way...your SNL appearance was really dumb too! You just continue to make yourself look more like an idiot with every word you utter.

Chris Anderson   October 20th, 2008 1:17 am ET

CNN...Stop bashing Palin....

She is only exposing the facts that you are afraid to really look at.

After an Obama Presidency you will be nashing your teeth for what you have done...

This woman is amazingly ignorant, and downright dangerous to our National security.

sabine ch.   October 20th, 2008 1:15 am ET

this goes to show again that this woman is really stupid. how can she claim that obama wants to take money from small income families, when he said again and again that it is the incomes over 250.000 that will be taxed. is 250.000 a small income? oh people of america wake up and smell the lies that she tells you. this is no socialism, this is justice. don´t let the super-rich continue to reap all the wealth from you – fight back and claim your share of the goodies – vote for obama.

Dennis   October 20th, 2008 1:14 am ET

"Taking more from a small business or small business owners or from a hard working family and then redistributing that money according to a politician’s priorities. There are hints of socialism in there."

"Asked if she thinks the government’s plan to inject billions of taxpayer dollars directly into troubled banks amounts to socialism — a belief held by many conservative legislators, talk radio hosts and bloggers — Palin said, "No, I do not."

Maybe asking her to define "socialism" would have been a better place to start? Not to mention a whole lot funnier. Gov. Clueless strikes again.

smarty   October 20th, 2008 1:14 am ET

Palin is right, Obama will lead this nation to socialism and thus his election to the highest office will mark the beginning of the death of democracy. Socialism is a very ideal concept but sharing the wealth encourages receiving with less or no work at all hence putting an end to what John F Kennedy had said "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country". With Obama's administration it will make the one pursuing the American dream through hardwork to share the wealth to those who do not. Emancipation has gone a long way but it should not lead to stagnancy and seem entitlement to get more than what you work for or to get something from nothing. Obama's tax plan is a bait for votes but thinking americans should look at the future and their deep american values and the pursuance of the American Dream. That is why we should vote for the American Hero.

"I believe that there are those measures that had to be taken by congress to shore up not only the housing market but the credit markets also, to make sure that that’s not frozen, so that our small businesses have opportunities to borrow, and that was the purpose, of course, and that part of the bailout and the shoring of the banks," she said.

Spoken like a true team-of-mavericks non-socialist expert, doggone it.

mike   October 20th, 2008 1:12 am ET

as a obama supporter i have heard all the terrible things the mccain campaign and palin have said. i think this is the first good thing Palin has said. For once the Mccain campaign realizes how nieve they are to run those campaigns. Obama could run so many negative ads about Liddy, more things about mccain and Keating, her and her husbands ties to terroist. But he has taken the high road. Im proud of the Obama campaign. But in the back of my head i feel that Mccain realizes that these robocalls and negative attacks are making him lose points and try to put Palin out to try and fix these negative ads. Just last week she started all this crap about Obama palling around with terroist. So who can know if this is another campaign led tatic

ethel08   October 20th, 2008 1:11 am ET

OK, I see. Giving my hard working family a tax break is socialist. But giving my family no tax break at all while giving the wealthiest Americans even more is just the sacrifice I am supposed to make. That kind of wealth redistribution is good. The other kind–where I get the tax break–is un-American.

And of course buying up mortgages and nationalizing the banks isn't socialist one bit.

That makes sense, Ms. Palin.

Can someone please give these people the real definition of "socialism"? Because they don't seem to know it.

CTSadler   October 20th, 2008 1:11 am ET

Wow... Even Palin's trying to distance herself from the McCain campaign. John McCain needs to heed the advice offered to Mondale when his landslide loss was imminent: run the campaign you want to be remembered for. He has two weeks left to salvage his legacy.

Trasa, Texas   October 20th, 2008 1:10 am ET

Please Sarah, save it! It's socialism alright as you keep saying, the reason why you say it's okay for government to have a stake in the banks because it's helping those on top and not on bottom. I guess you and McSellOut forgot that us "regular folks" help build this country up as well. Forget about the fact that small and big businesses need us little folks to run their company. I'm not saying milk them for what it's worth, but this trickle down economics only works if those on top actually trickle it down instead of walking away with big bonuses and other goodies like they did all the work themselves.

Obama/Biden 08

Joe   October 20th, 2008 1:10 am ET

If that's true, then all taxes are "Socialism." If you're so against Socialism, why didn't you stop this bailout? They're _nationalizing our banks_ right now. In case you don't know what the word Socialism actually means, nationalized banks are an essential part of it. And Bush is just following the economic footsteps on another Republican, Richard Nixon, who instituted wage & price controls back in the 1970s. Republicans, for all their talk to the contrary, have a history of enacting Socialist policies whenever they get into an economic bind. And we're in a huge bind right now, so you can trust the Republicans to cave in to Socialism during hard times, like they just did. Just like they always have.

Jonathan F.   October 20th, 2008 1:10 am ET

her lack of common sense is more and more evident each time she opens her mouth. Because Barack does it, it hints at socialism, but when the federal government does something very similar, its not. If i'm not mistaken are we not to be our brother's keeper? We donate to those who are less fortunate that others, are we being socialist? Jeez this train wreck is almost over.

M.B.   October 20th, 2008 1:09 am ET

is she ever going to meet with REAL press? or release her medical records? surely they have 'doctored' them by now!

Mary   October 20th, 2008 1:08 am ET

The Obama campaign does NOT make robocalls. Every one of the calls from his campaign is from a real person, one of the many thousands of volunteers in his campaign. Yesterday I made more than 100 of them.

Bruce Winegar   October 20th, 2008 1:04 am ET

Sarah Palin seems to think that a progressive tax policy is socialism while government ownership of investment banks is not. Does this mean that McCain/Palin advocate a flat tax? Given the continuing erratic nature of McCain's campaign, this just might be his October surprise.

Arkansas   October 20th, 2008 1:04 am ET

I'm so sick of Paline, she needs to either go back to Alaska or get a job on SNL.....she is not the brightest star in the sky. McCain made a bad decission when he made her his VP, that was his biggest mistake.....Colon Powell said it all today, Obama gets my vote.

labman57   October 20th, 2008 1:04 am ET

She didn't seem to have any problem rehashing the Ayers attacks in her speeches during the past few weeks. And wasn't she the one pressing McCain to delve even deeper into the gutter by resurrecting the Rev. Wright issue?

Why do I get the feeling that Palin is one of those types that will cut you loose like unwanted ballast if it suits her needs?

Dave   October 20th, 2008 1:04 am ET

Sarah Palin is not welcomed in Colorado. Her rhetoric is divisive and incites hate and anger. John McCain and Sarah Palin are responsible for dividing our country at a time we need to come together.

I can appreciate the fact that their campaign has fallen apart and that they are motivated to do whatever they can to win, but winning in that manner would not be a win for America. Leaders need to lead through example, and they have set a horrible example of how they lead.

This is the most disastrous campaign I have ever witnessed and it is a sad day for America that these people have a national forum in which to spread their message of hate and lies.

Go home Sarah. It's over.

DannyCali   October 20th, 2008 1:03 am ET

It doesn't work.........Sarah and McCain.......! Look Hillary already attack
about that and doesn't work. So, if your Republican want to win the White House your guy should stop and try some things new and pick some body have more experience to be VP or some body younger to run for President because McCain a little too old and Sarah can't incharge incase something wrong with McCain that's why people don't want to vote for McCain. Wrong VP pick is the big problem now.

David in Minneapolis   October 20th, 2008 1:02 am ET

At this point, she's not to be believed. I respected Senator McCain up until about a month ago but now he's just another sleasy politician and so is his lapdog Sarah Palin.

OBAMAO 2008!!

Dennis   October 20th, 2008 1:01 am ET

Taxes ... are nothing more than taking a persons wealth and using it for the common good ... education, roads, etc. We might not like paying taxes ... but paying taxes isn't socialism! Raising taxes isn't socialism either ... When the Republicans raised taxes ... did anybody call it socialism, or "experimenting with socialism"?

By the way ... ZERO for those under 250,000 a year. What doesn't she understand.

Uhn ... according to Palin's comments it looks like its going to be free for all under McCain (anarchy).

Anyway ... I think McCain and Palin need to review their American History ...

Alex P   October 20th, 2008 1:01 am ET

So pumping 700billion into banks is not socialism but helping out the little guy is. Like Robin Hood in reverse.

The 700 billion would have been better spent giving it to the little guy and let the banks go down. The little guy could then get his discretionary spending back go out and buy things and the economy would inflate.

The only proble would be that we need him to buy American made items which once more the wealthy have moved abroad.

ps alaska   October 20th, 2008 1:01 am ET

If you read carefully she said one thing and then backed away from it completely. This is what she has done here in Alaska. She is on all sides of the issues and then picks the one later that makes her look good. This is where our Governor throws McCain to the wolves. If they lose she will be giving interviews by November 15 about how if they had let her do what she wanted to do it all would have been okay. She will make millions speaking to evangelical groups and will continue to do virtually nothing here in Alaska. Will the people be fooled time will tell.

Janet - Missouri   October 20th, 2008 1:00 am ET

Watch out John....she's undercutting you like a beauty queen in a hot contest would undercut a rival. Gov. Palin definitely isn't a moron like many in the press make her out to be...she understands the game of politics and getting ahead pretty well – she's very shrewd. She's already beginning to distance herself from McCain's disastrous campaign so she can appeal to the 2012 crowd and so she isn't seen as the reason for McCain's loss.

If they lose and she decides to run in 2012, it'll be interesting to pull out the video of people like Guiliani and Romney praising her.....b/c they'll tear her down so fast it'll be ugly.

Interesting??? Tax payers can bail out Wall Street and it's okay, but if we ask the wealthy to pay a little more then it's socialism. This campaign is not smart and very erratic. Even nut case Palin thinks it's doing the wrong thing.

Obama hit them on this!!!

Lis   October 20th, 2008 12:55 am ET

Well now this is a strange turn of events. Anyway NEWS FLASH...The ACORN issue is nothing about voter registration fraud to benefit O'Bama. It's basically a money issue....workers not really doing there job but just getting names out of a phone book or making up names to get paid that's all. So stop the pathetic voter fraud crap. And as for Ayers, if O'bama is parading with terrorists then what about the Republicans who organized the function with ayers and O'bama in the first place? Are they parading also or is this a double standard? I think it's time the republicans looked for something else to talk about. And while I'm at it, if you all are so offended by O'Bama's share the wealth comment then where has our wealth went the last 8 years? TO GEORGE W. BUSH and that stupid war. So you crybabies should be happy to invest in your fellow Americans and in your own country. Otherwise keep doing the same insane ( george bush voters ) thing expecting a different result. Wake up already.

The self-contradictory nature of her comment (Obama is promoting socialism, but the government injecting billions of tax dollars into the economy is NOT socialist–huh?) is a perfectly logical comment from someone who has already told Katie Couric that Roe v. Wade was unconstitutional because it violated a constitutional right to privacy–huh?

Sari   October 20th, 2008 12:53 am ET

Palin is meeting the press now because she's focusing on her future career. She has 2 weeks left on the national stage to lay the groundwork for a future run for congress or even the presidency. She's no longer thinking about McCain or this campaign, she's moved on.

melody watkins   October 20th, 2008 12:51 am ET

I have even less respect for Palin now. She practically admits she is out there stomping with a message and tactics she doesn't believe in. If McCain/Palin win the election, just who will be leading the country; them or the people they have relinquished their principles to? We have been there before with a President so beloved that most of you won't admit that he was not in control through much of his administration. Lets not go there again. Mr.McCain, you have pushed me into Obama's camp with your bad choices. There is time to bring me back.

"Taking more from a small business or small business owners or from a hard working family and then redistributing that money according to a politician’s priorities. There are hints of socialism in there."

By that logic ALL taxes are socialist. Yet, McCain/Palin doesn't propose to eliminate taxes altogether.

Bigbubba   October 20th, 2008 12:38 am ET

McCain claims he loves being the underdog. Good thing considering his campaign tactics. the only people that approve of his tactics are the far, far right wing of the right wing party. The folks that buy their sheets on the family plan, The folks that love minorities because otherwise they would have to do their own yard work.

And Palin, well bless her heart, she just can't stop lying can she. Obama's tax plan reduces taxes on everyone making less than $250,000 a year. See, that is not so hard to understand. So, unless she is just dumber than a box of rocks, she is just outright lying to the American people.

I don't know which sounds better. That she is that stupid or that she is as dishonest as the campaign is making her look. I'm leaning toward stupid. Otherwise, considering her avowed Christianity, she would be a hypocrite as well as being a liar.

While I, personally, am glad to hear Governor Palin openly criticize these tactics, I also can't help but notice how disorganized this campaign is. McCain's own Vice-Presidential candidate isn't staying on message. Do we really want such political incompetence in the White House?

Jack Six Pack   October 20th, 2008 12:37 am ET

What voters are fed up with is silly sarah trying to pretend that she is qualified to be anything other than dogcatcher in some backwater hick town.

Sarah, if you ever tried to tell the truth perhaps some people other than wingnuts might listen to you but, since your one of them, I would guess not!

Steve Los Angeles   October 20th, 2008 12:36 am ET

I'm sorry, but shouldn't these people at least Google the word 'socialism' before they go throwing it around at people much more intelligent than themselves? Go away, Sarah.

Rich--Fargo   October 20th, 2008 12:36 am ET

She sould be asked if she knows what socialism is. I know more then Gov. Palin and I do not qualify for a credit card.

Just Me   October 20th, 2008 12:35 am ET

This woman scares me – typical Republican fear mongering. It's time to vote for hope and our future not the past. Let's think about what America can be – not what we were (sorry Reaganites...).

Cant believe this lady thinks she know socialism when she doesnt know a thing about it.   October 20th, 2008 12:35 am ET

Sarah Palin has officially shown she does not know what socialism is about. Claiming that Obama wants to engage in Socialism while denouncing socialist actions by the current government is a contradiction and only goes on to show that she does not understand what socialism is about.

Surething   October 20th, 2008 12:35 am ET

great comment Biden, "no more questions after Powell endorsement". so now Biden has no questions and no answers. sounds about right.

Could someone tell me what in the world John McCains criteria must have been to pick a running mate like this? I'm sure she is a nice person, but a possible POTUS are you friggin' kiddin' me!!! McCain wants to portray himself as just your average guy now THATS funny, could you imagine John McCain at a summit meeting with someone like Putin and the president making all those knucklheaded facial expressions evertime he hears something he disagrees with and S.P. in the background yelling "you keep on mavericking you mavericker"
I think I'll just vote for the smart guy instead.

Mike Wagner   October 20th, 2008 12:33 am ET

blah blah blah. Has she said anything that didn't involve slamming Obama? I guess when your campaign has no substance, you've nothing left to do. Hope you're still welcome in Alaska.

Miri   October 20th, 2008 12:33 am ET

I wish every one would stop picking on Palin & McCain by asking them tough questions that force them to think. After all last two times out we elected the guy who's not all that bright and that's been sorta OK.
I mean hasn't it?

NO MAM   October 20th, 2008 12:33 am ET

she's full of herself. Now she's determining what is and isn't Socialism? Nationalizing banks by the current administration is not socialism? Oh, it's called "saving the country by a Republican president". You and you're old tactics of Sen. Joe McCarthy that's so 1947-1957...

Darrell (Florida   October 20th, 2008 12:33 am ET

Palin scares me at times– I think she has some plans and an agenda that the American people aren't entirely aware of. Somehow I believe she's radical in particular ideologies. I know what I'll be getting if I vote for McCain- but I'm not so sure about his running mate Palin–her husband too.

Maybe it's just me.

Asad   October 20th, 2008 12:32 am ET

Palin just admitted that she doesn't like the way campaign is going. If she had any leadership she would confront McCain and the republicans about it!

WHY CANT THE MCCAIN CAMPAIGN JUST ADMIT THAT WE ARE LOSING THE WAR IN IRAQ, ARE THEY STUPID!!!!!!!!!

Anyway go Obama!! Make sure to Vote!!

dg in Toronto   October 20th, 2008 12:32 am ET

I see what Palin is saying. Giving to the poor is socialism. Giving to the rich is not.

I don't think America can survive another pea brain for preseident. Obama is the only choice.

Mariam Wang   October 20th, 2008 12:32 am ET

Palin thinks her one-time SNL appearance would earn her good review with the press. Well, her answers certainly prove otherwise. Inconsistent, incoherent, and at times purely dishonest, now she argues against the tactic linking Obama to Ayers, fails to face up the bail-out, well – hints of socialism in there – while attacking Obama's tax plan, and admits that she is not calling the shots. Well. Guess the last part was the truth – puppet, parrot, and fair-weather politician. So very different from Washington, she is!

If SNL really turned the election, and McCain-Palin won in November, then the US truly deserve them – no doubt, and no future!

Independent turned Obama supporter – especially after McCain's VP selection!

Crownson West   October 20th, 2008 12:31 am ET

Okay. I understand Governor Palin quite well. If 700 billion dollars of tax payers money is used to rescue the fat cats of Wall Street from their gluttony-induced anorexia, it is not socialism. But if a considerably lesser amount of tax payers money is used to rescue the small rats on main street it is socialism. Palin and her cohorts have never partaken of the Orwellian pretensions about the equality of all animals. Let the rats perish. Long live the cats!

Marlon   October 20th, 2008 12:28 am ET

She's got a good heart, I give her that. She's just ignorant. "Winning the war" is a phrase that shows how uninformed she is of the complex situation in Iraq. Her answer about the bailout was on the level of some of her Couric answers – rambling and incoherent.

Obama's plan wouldn't take money from small business owners, it would give money TO small business owners and take money from big business owners. As opposed to taking money from small business owners and giving it to banks, oil companies, and insurance companies.

If Obama's plan is socialist then all taxes are socialist. That's what the government does – it takes money and redistributes it according to the government's priorities. That's called taxation and governance, Gov. Palin. God, she's ignorant.

independent in CA   October 20th, 2008 12:28 am ET

She's throwing McCain under the bus with the rest of the good ole boys that she's thrown under it back in her country, Alaska. Someone should have told her that in the USA running mates don't do that.

Lets see one more interview with questions on the economy and foreign policy. I don't believe McCain will let it happen.

Palin does not have the intelligence to be in the position she is in. She has charisma but no substance. She is not a deep thinker. Do you educate yourself on the the tireless, stressful relentless job of the Presidency and how would Mccain fair then? Do you educate yourself on the potential of a Palin presidency should Mccain be incapacited and the lack of knowledge, education, forthrightness, worthiness, let your husband do your job-ness, kitchen table budget-ness and truly unethical-ness that equals a Palin presidency. Please, educate yourself as to whether a person who is a Harvard graduate, shows a steady hand, thoughtfulness to the situation, steadfastness in principles, 1 house, 1 car, with the ability to rise above the fray and LEAD as an Obama presidency shows. Educate yourself regarding a potential Biden presidency with his principles, knowledge and mature attitude would bring if the need arose. EDUCATE YOURSELF IN FAIRNESS TO YOURSELF. OBAMA/BIDEN 08 12

If one situation hints of socialism, then so does the other. It does not matter the reason for it being done. Sarah Palin is saying what she is told to say and when she speaks on her own, she contradicts the party, such as she would not robo call. To tax individuals making over 250,000 a year is alright with me. My wife and I are not there yet, we are at 200,000, when and if we get there and are taxed at that rate, I will not mind helping my country and fellow citizens. Come on think about it, 250,000 is a lot of money.

Focus on economics and things that will help American to trust our economic system. I real don't know what Governor Palin teaching young generation and our kids.
People comes first not personal agenda over who qulify and who is not qualify to become a president. Let American people make that decision without any manipulation from candidates.

Jason ledet   October 20th, 2008 12:15 am ET

Dear Palin,

Sweatie, that's socialism! Injecting tax payer money into free market business is socialism......you prove your ignorance every time you open your mouth.

Babe   October 20th, 2008 12:14 am ET

I wish the campaign were over and Sarah would just mosey on home to face her impeachment for abuse of gubernatorial powers. While hibernating at home to play stay-at-home mommie, she might study a bit and get on more intimate terms with the English language. That might prepare her for some serious reading, which she would have to do to become more educated, if that is possible. She is unquestionably ignorant. The uncertainty is as to how stupid she is.

At any rate, it would be a pleasure and a relief to conclude this ugly element of the campaign. Her vitriol has been most unwelcome, and it is fortunate she will not be seen in Congress. It will facilitate the healing. On November 5, there will still be many of our simpler folk who are convinced that Obama is a terrorist, a socialist, a Marxist, an advocate of sexual education for five-year olds and a tax-and-spend liberal. Go home, Sarah, and take your guns with you.

I pray there is no last minute upset, for I do not believe this country could survive a term of McCain-Palin.

Asked if think the government’s plan to inject billions of taxpayer dollars directly into troubled banks amounts to socialism — a belief held by many conservative legislators, talk radio hosts and bloggers — Palin said, "No, I do not."

This made me laugh.

Definition of Socialism: Any of various theories or systems of social organization in which the means of producing and distributing goods is owned collectively or by a centralized government that often plans and controls the economy.

Guess what? Taxes aren't a good or service. Therefore Obama's tax plan cannot be carried under it. Us nationalizing the banks IS.

Does this woman even understand the actual mechanisms of a socialist system?!? Socialism means that the _government_ owns the key engines of your nation's economy, like say, oh, the _BANKS_ and _FINANCIAL INSITUTIONS_ that the government just bought part interest in to shore up our failing economy. Obama's plan targets the wealthy whose _taxable income_ (not gross income) exceeds $250,000 and who typically can afford the accountants and others to get out of paying a substantial amount of taxes.
This would be a laughable comedy if this woman wasn't really running to be Vice President of the United States.

And I am irrated by Colin Powell. What a wimp. You can't tell me he would have endorsed Clinton had she won the primary even though her policies where very similiar to Obama's. He's endorsing Obama because of his color. Just like John Lewis abandoned Clinton and went to Obama towards the end of the primary. I am just so sick and tired of race being a factor in this election. John Lewis is the one who recently called McCain and Palin encouraging racism. Why is it that most balck people in this election are screaming racism so much? No matter what a white person says it's racist. Give me a break! I hate to see what it will be like if Obama does win. I will not vote for Obama not because of his race but because of all the people yelling racist no matter what you say.

Art   October 20th, 2008 12:05 am ET

She is good at contradicting herself. I don't see what the big deal is anyway in using a little bit of socialism for education and healthcare. Somepeople can not afford to get in the game without a boost and the fact is poverty creates crime.

melba   October 20th, 2008 12:05 am ET

This is the first time during the campaign that the lady has made sense.

Chris   October 20th, 2008 12:04 am ET

Does Sarah Palin see the contradiction in her argument?

mariya   October 20th, 2008 12:04 am ET

Sarah Palin is the best what many people found interested in politics. She is fresh air not just for Washincton but for Obama too.Without her his speech was boring +++,but now there are some refreshing in his speeches. However,I think he is not only talking as robot he is thinking as robot too.

JustAskin'   October 20th, 2008 12:04 am ET

Let me get this straight: Taking taxpayer money to help the bankers and businesses ISN'T SOCIALISM, but shifting some of the tax burden back onto CEOs and business IS Socialism. Wow. I must that day in PolySci and Economics. Thank God we have Six-Pack Sarah on this!

e   October 20th, 2008 12:03 am ET

Sara Palin is constantly saying how she would do things differently....

just goes to prove she is only a political ploy being used by the McCain campaign.

MWA   October 20th, 2008 12:03 am ET

Palin knows a lot about socialism because she can see Russia out her window.

Are you kidding me?   October 20th, 2008 12:03 am ET

MikeH   October 20th, 2008 12:03 am ET

John McCain says he loves being the underdog.

Is it because he can then justify spreading hate and lies and devide the country?

There is no forgiveness for what the Republican party is doing in this campaign.

Love being the underdog, John? Let's see how you enjoy being vilified for your campaign's messages of racist hate.

Skeeve   October 20th, 2008 12:03 am ET

Yet again Palin doesn't know the meaning of the word "socialism" I think I should donate her $5 to buy a dictionary... Redistribution of wealth has little to do with socialism..... state owned banks, or partially owned banks this is another matter entirely. This is not just a hint of socialism... While we are all promised that the state shares will be sold as soon as economy gets better and banks will again become private that we have to wail ans see.

will   October 20th, 2008 12:02 am ET

Palin sound like she have no say in the Campaign

sacto joe   October 20th, 2008 12:02 am ET

This "socialism" label is crud, of course, as is the "anti-American" label. It's all about manipulating the public, making them fearful.

The only thing you have to fear, America, are the fear-mongers themselves.

Republican for Obama   October 20th, 2008 12:01 am ET

Well I guess its time to save face seeing their campaign in coming to and end!!

Lost in Texas   October 20th, 2008 12:01 am ET

I don't know why but for some reason I doubt if Sarah Palin even knows what socialism is! I would bet somebody from the McCain campaign just told her to go out and say Obama is a socialist and it's bad. She just doesn't impress me as one who would really know such things unless she were told.

Lissa   October 20th, 2008 12:01 am ET

There isn't one clear answer in anything she said. She's slippery and dodges the core of every issue she's asked to comment on – that's not VP material. That's a misplaced PTA president.

Matt Black - St. Louis, MO   October 20th, 2008 12:00 am ET

It seems to me, they should really just start doing damage control at this point. The election is all but over and if they keep this up, they are going to end up alienating many republicans and even more democrats, to where they both might be out of job should they lose this election. Being a democrat that would be fine by me, I'm just sayin.

CitizenS   October 20th, 2008 12:00 am ET

Once again, she shows her lack of principles as well as knowledge of how any government in any country should work. As for the kitchen table, that is how she and Todd deleted important and needed budget items from the Alaska budget then had to put the same items back in the budget when it was explained to her that these items were necessary to help the people of Alaska. Yet, she gave no governance when initially requested by the legislature Before the budget was initiated. THIS type of person is who you will vote for?? Republicans better put their thinking caps on quick!

josh   October 20th, 2008 12:00 am ET

i respect the press, how do they sift a message, out of this gibberish. does palin understand english, or she just cant control her train of thought.

Missouri Mom   October 20th, 2008 12:00 am ET

Lol now Sarah Palin is jumping ship? No one wants to be affiliated with the republican brand except John McShame now! That's just beautiful.

Dee Jay in miami   October 19th, 2008 11:59 pm ET

James   October 19th, 2008 11:59 pm ET

She's a liar. She's only saying this to attempt to paint herself in a positive light. This woman IS worse than GW. I simply never thought it possible.

Henry Haider   October 19th, 2008 11:58 pm ET

Ms. Palin, It could you a while to realize what American wants and not what you wish to give. Unfortunately it's a bit too late.

kev   October 19th, 2008 11:58 pm ET

Gov. Palin keeps talking about Sen. Obama needs to answer questions yet she keeps ducking questions from the mainstream media and hiding behind her microphone while throwing out accusations. Gov. how about you stop hiding and answer a few questions yourself?

MRubin   October 19th, 2008 11:58 pm ET

To the thinking of most of the right-wing dominated G.O.P. politicians, anyone who disagrees with their sick outlook is either un-American, or a terrorist. One whacko Republican congresswoman just called for an investigation to determine which members of Congress are anti-American, while Palin announced that certain parts of the U.S. are anti-American.
John McClain just corrected one of his looney supporters at a rally who feared Obama, claiming him to be an Arab, as if that's a crime. McCain didn't condemn her outright overt racism, but instead, informed her that Obama is not an Arab. It appears that almost the entire G.O.P. has gone mad!!

Jim, IN   October 19th, 2008 11:57 pm ET

I guess whats funny about the McCain camp lately is, everyone says something different. I thought message control was supposed to be something important. Its almost like theres what McCain wants, what Palin wants, and what Steve Schmidt wants...and they're all different.

John in VA   October 19th, 2008 11:57 pm ET

I applaud you for standing up to McShame, Sarah. Now, how would you suggest going ahead?

"That One" 08

Mikey   October 19th, 2008 11:56 pm ET

Does she not understand that 98% of small business owners would not see a tax increase and that most would actually see a reduction under the Obama tax plan? or does she just not care if she is telling the truth or not?

I have to ask if allowing the Bush tax cuts to the wealthiest 1% of Americans is a "redistribution" of income, then wasn't the original tax cut a redistribution, just in the other direction? Actually worse yet, since we just ran up the deficit more as a result of giving tax breaks to the rich, we took money away from our children and grandchildren to make a small portion of our population richer.

If you believe in trickle down economics, just look at the result. We ended up with less jobs, stagnant earnings for most Americans, runaway deficits, and in the end, a wrecked economy.

Final point, under the Obama plan, the tax bracket over $195,000 is increased by 3%. Therefore, if you make $300,000 and have taxable income after deductions and exemptions of $250,000, your taxes would go up by about $1,650, or just over 1/2% of your gross income. Most people in that income bracket would see their effective tax rate go from about 20% to about 20.5%.

johnrj08   October 19th, 2008 11:56 pm ET

Now she can add hypocrite to her resume.

Ron   October 19th, 2008 11:56 pm ET

The government bails out big banks by giving them our taxpayer money and that's not socialism? Where did this girl study? Did she study anything during those 5 years trying to get a journalistic degree? Here's a hint, Sarah....when the gov. gives 700 billion of our taxpayer dollars away to big businesses, it's sure as hell not capitalism. Much like you taxing the big oil companies and giving every man, woman and child (who as far as I know don't pay taxes) a 1200 bonus, that's more like socialism than anything Obama has proposed. Get real and go home.

sharon   October 19th, 2008 11:56 pm ET

uh ........ what did she say? It's like she speaks a foreign language.

Anonymous   October 19th, 2008 11:55 pm ET

Sarah,

Before you make any comments about the Democratic candidates, it may not be a bad idea to sit down and reflect on whether or not it is "patriotic" for you to run to be vice president and potentially president. given your capabilities and ignorance. You were chosen by Mccain to just stir up some excitement into his dull campaign. You speak with great confidence on issues that you have no knowledge of. No intellectual woman could ever vote for you. No vice presidential candidates capability has ever been been questioned as much as yours. So before you start labelling your opponents as socialist and terrorrist- something the American people do not care about– LOOK WITHIN YOURSELF!!!!

Paul   October 19th, 2008 11:54 pm ET

Does anyone care what Palin has to say anymore? The woman is a national joke.

Chris   October 19th, 2008 11:54 pm ET

Palin originally was for it, now that it is not working out as she had expected does not like it. She is the one that said that Barack Obama is "palling away with terrorist". What else is in the cards for this governor?

Bernadeth   October 19th, 2008 11:53 pm ET

So socialism is ok, or bears a different name when supported by republicans. What hypocracy. This woman makes me feel ashamed when I hear her speak, without the use of gramatically comprehensible phrases. Reading her speak solidifies my shame.
"There are hints of socialism in there." "...to make sure that that's not frozen..." I mean, come on. I can speak better than that, and I can never run for anything, let alone VP. Senator Mc the Same, pleas teach your mate to speak properly.

nina   October 19th, 2008 11:53 pm ET

I don't understand why the repugs call this "socialism". In Canada, we have a system where, those who make more, pay more in taxes. That just makes sense.
Our taxes go for infrastructure, public school education, our health care system, public services to aid the less fortunate, unemployment etc. The list goes on and on.
Anyway, in times like these, those who are less fortunate, esp with children, who have lost their job, or just fallen on hard times, our system helps them out, and is careful not to allow pple to take advantage of our system.
People should really pay attention, as no job is forever anymore, and all of you yelling "socialism", may one day need help yourself.
It isn't socialism.
Keep this in mind, The wealth in your country has always been spread, by those who are the wealthiest. They get the tax breaks, Do your research before just chiming in at a rally. Look at the last 8 years. Has any of the wealth trickled down to you?
So, if giving a break to those with less is socialism, then keeping all the wealth to only the richest is facisim.

Jennifer C.   October 19th, 2008 11:53 pm ET

McCain/Palin give the American people details about how you are going to get us working again.

We have NOT heard any yet.

Socialism – hardly. Obama is shifting the tax break the wealthy have been receiving for the last 8 years.

slc in ny   October 19th, 2008 11:53 pm ET

For all of the lies that Sarah Palin is telling, she sure has a lot of repenting to do. It is really bad mising religion and politicss, especially when you have to lie. My wife stated to me today, "how can all these people who state that they are Christians have so much hate in them"? Could not really answer that except to say that they must not be "real" Christians.

Evan   October 19th, 2008 11:53 pm ET

Let me first say that I am a proud Independent who supported Hillary, but remains undecided (truth be told, leaning towards a Hillary write-in).

When Palin was first introduced as McCain's running mate, I jumped on the liberal bandwagon of hurling insults like she's stupid or a barbie or incompetent, but I had nothing to back that up except for the mob mentality that has ruled this campaign pn both sides. But the more that I read about Governor Palin, and the more I see her on the trail, the more I really like her. And despite that Couric interview disaster, I do not think she is stupid or unqualified or a bumbling fool. I believe that Gov Palin will be a force to be reckoned with in 2012 and I am looking forward to that.

Jason T.   October 19th, 2008 11:52 pm ET

Yes, and if Sarah had her way and somehow won, we'd have a theocracy and the world would hate us more than they do already.

Brian   October 19th, 2008 11:52 pm ET

Just today on Fox News, John McCain was talking about how he'll still be the US Senator from Arizona even if he doesn't win and he'll go back to that. Not exactly positive thinking.

Sarah Palin is trying to distance herself from unpopular aspects of this campaign and probably eyeing the 2012 Republican Presidential primaries or an US Senatorial bid. Too bad she doesn't realize that can't distance herself from one the most unpopular aspects of the Republican ticket, herself.

Janice   October 19th, 2008 11:52 pm ET

Why is it that this woman always refers to people of this Country as "Americans"? Why can't she simply say "if I called the shots, I would be sitting at a kitchen table with more and more 'people' . . . ." ? Could it be because she is an Alaskan and sees the "lower 48" as another country. Oh, I forgot; she pals around with secessionists; that is why she speaks as though we are foreigners to her; yet, she wants to be the vice president of this Country? Interesting.

ade   October 19th, 2008 11:52 pm ET

Can she be described as "erratic"?

valery   October 19th, 2008 11:52 pm ET

canada   October 19th, 2008 11:51 pm ET

she is unbelieveable!!!!!!!!!!!!!! one minute she is saying palling around with terrorists now she wouldnt do these robo calls saying this. she's just jealous that BO was able to raise so much money to run all his tv ads and they (republicans) can't afford to. maybe mccain should have took the same road as obama instead of using regulated gov't funds for his campaign. then he wouldnt have to "borrow" money to finish his campaign. they are losing and BO was smart enough to buy up all tv ad space so even if mccain gets the money, there is no space left lol.
go obama/biden
even the canadians are cheering you on.

paul   October 19th, 2008 11:47 pm ET

AA   October 19th, 2008 11:46 pm ET

Gross.

The problem of course is that no one is asking the simple questions...

Ms. Palin, can you please elaborate on which parts of the socialistic model bother you the most?

The majority of the GOP dimwits do not have a clue at what it is, and especially what the clear advantages of a modern socialistic/democratic hybrid, society offers. You know far off exotic places like Canada who happen to have full medical coverage and are in the strongest position of all g8 nations during this economy.

Really, I believe that being a citizen in a country should not automatically give you the right to vote, you should have to take an IQ test.

I don't think that many people espousing these ideals of socialism really get the concept of the concepts behind it. In reality some of our most ingrained institutions in this country are, by definition, socialist: Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, etc.

I served in the United States Navy during the first part of this current war, and I must say, that the US military is probably the the most Socialist type institution that this country has.

There are no pure types of governing philosophies running this world. Actually, China is no more Communist than we are a Democracy.

Please please please... someone... anyone... Joe the Plummer, a soccer mom or dad, even a pig with lipstick... Ask Sarah if she even knows what "socialism" is and how it applies to Obama!!!

All she's doing is stirring the hate/fear base of "real" America who might be convinced by such shameful, wrong rhetoric. McCain, himself, should know better and put a stop to it... because it harms ALL of America... it insults our intelligence and our better nature... who is going to set her straight that her symantics are all wrong and she's red-baiting...

OK, take the wand, put it over your head, slowly rotate the wand over your head, close your eyes and keep repeating there is no place like home.

You are out of your league and don't have any inkling what you have been talking about!

This woman just cannot speak in complete, coherent sentences at all. It is so clear she is just the secretary and has no real involvement in the direction of this campaign. I'm so glad President Obama will be elected in a few days.

Sure, neither Palin nor McCain are behind the robo-calls. Just some low level staffer who is outside their control. Right . . . uh huh . . .

Danielle   October 19th, 2008 11:34 pm ET

I see that Sarah is disagreeing with her running mate on this. I thought they consulted each other. Goes to show Sarah and John don't agree on much and if she's in the white house and something happens to McCain she'll turn everything around for the worse. Thats why we need to vote for Obama/Biden08'

2008 MINUTE MAN   October 19th, 2008 11:34 pm ET

THIS WOMAN IS UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!
HELPING THE STUGGLING AND THE "EVERYMAN" IS DEEMED AS SOCIALIST, BUT HELPING THE BANKS AND THE FINANCIAL MARKETS IS NOT. WOW

Selwin   October 19th, 2008 11:31 pm ET

And what exactly would that plan be Ms. Palin? I hear your critique for the Obama tax cut plan but, yet I hear nothing different from the McCain campaign that would be different from the last 8 years. NO more trickle down. OBAMA/BIDEN 08
