Powell endorsed Obama Sunday.
Powell endorsed Obama Sunday.

(CNN) – Former Secretary of State Colin Powell announced Sunday that he will be voting for Sen. Barack Obama, citing the Democrat's "ability to inspire" and the "inclusive nature of his campaign."

"I think he is a transformational figure, he is a new generation coming onto the world stage, onto the American stage, and for that reason I'll be voting for Sen. Barack Obama," Powell said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Powell said he was concerned about what he characterized as a recent negative turn of Republican candidate Sen. John McCain's campaign, such as the campaign's attempts to tie Obama to former 1960s radical Bill Ayers.

Powell, a retired U.S. general and a Republican, was once seen as a possible presidential candidate himself.

As a business owner and proud democrat, I'm proud to see the endorsement from Colin Powell. As an American you should vote your conscience. If you are not happy with the current state of affairs, Republican or Dem, you should make a decision. If you are not happy with your party than you should vote against your party. Sarah Palin was a bad choice and most Republicans know it. You shouldn't vote for McCain just because you are a Republican if you aren't happy with him or his policies. Be smart people. Barack will take back our country and turn it around for ALL AMERICANS.

Corey in Violet, Louisiana   October 20th, 2008 9:35 am ET

I like how some people think that Powell endorsing Obama is because he's black. If I remember correctly, Liberman(a democrat turned indendent and a white man) endorsed McCain so why is there a problem?

RMKING FL FOR OBAMA   October 20th, 2008 9:11 am ET

If you like the last two years- you may not be racist but your thougths are and it just a short trip to you being one. You are saying that an african american cannot not rationally support another black candidate based on race. Sounds a little jim crow to me.

Gen. Powell seemed to be so sincere in his endorsement. He wasn't afraid to say Sarah Palin isn't qualified. One have to respect that.

McCain doesn't take it too serious to know when it's time to take a bow. Act 1, Act 2, Act 3, it's over. He should leave the theatre, he doesn't need to see the credits or take a bow. He died in the first opening scene.

BM   October 19th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

General Powell believes in what is right. He saw what a rotten campaign Mccain?palin was running, so why not speak about it? Everyone is entitled to vote for whomever they please. Isn't this what democracy is all about?

Gen. Powell decision is very personal choice. But if he were General once again, will he give responsibility to lead any group by an inexperience military in order to fight for any reason? The same way, America is now war on terror and also war on financial recovery? Do American people will elect an inexperienced who needs training to lead the nation during this crisis time?

Colin Powell made the "American Choice". The right choice letting McDummy and Palinochio C that their campaign doest have a led left 2 stand on. They have put so much Hatred and division N 2 their campain, but want 2 get mad when people call them on it. I love Obama/Biden ~2009~ :)

October 19th, 2008 12:37 pm ET "Nobody will say it, but you can’t tell me this is not another prominent black endorsing a fellow black candidate."- Nobody is saying it because it simply isn't true. If you had watched the ENTIRE interview you would have heard Gen. Powell explicitly lay out the reasons why he is endorsing Sen. Obama. You disrespect all that Gen. Powell has accomplished and stands for by making such a ludicrous claim.

Janelle   October 19th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

Francisco, you believe that voters should have to vote just their party regardless whether they like the candidate or not? I'm surprised that you're on a news story blog, considering that your comment is ignorant, shows no independent thinking, and explains why McCain even still has a chance in this election.

America think for you   October 19th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

Get a life and face the real issues that the country and its fellow citizens are facing. What do you say when a prominent white candidate endorse another white candidate? Why race has to do anything with Collin Powell backing Obama? What do you think about Joe Lieberman backing McCain? A white man backing a fellow white man. You are sick! God does not see color in any man. He sees all of us the same.

John   October 19th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

So, I don't honestly get the importance of a 9th inning endorsement for a man that is going to loose..lets be honest, the polls are not being, the only true poll is November 4th and i would bet that they will be reflective of the true feeling people have regarding Mr. Obama, he is just not ready, look listen and you will hear, talk and you will never know whats been said...

Shree Shrestha   October 19th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

Let's see Obama never took any stand on major issues. He voted PRESENT 130 times in Illinois Senate. He friended with controversial people like Ayers, Rezko, Wright and many others. When people start asking questions about his friends he told the world that he hardly knew them. On every issues important to American people he spoke from from both end of his mouth. Now he gets endorsement from General Powell.
General Powell believed in continuation of Clinton's policy with North Korea, Iran and Kyoto. He was against invading Iraq. Once he baecame Secretary of State he sold out to the policy of Neocons. He never took stand on what he believed in. He went to UN to sell Iraq War to global community. He could have taken stand and resign from his position of Secretary of State. Now he is supporting the candidate who does not take stand on any issues. Great Match.

NJVote08   October 19th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

Sounds like McCain is trying to play ‘can you top this?’

McCain, appearing on "Fox News Sunday." responded to the endorsement.

"I've always admired and respected General Powell," McCain said. "We're longtime friends. This doesn't come as a surprise, but I'm also very pleased to have the endorsement of four former Secretaries of State – Secretaries Kissinger, Baker, Eagleburger and Haig. And I'm proud to have the endorsement of well over 200 retired Army generals and admirals, but I respect and continue to respect and admire Secretary Powell."

It's amazing how he has always admired someone and how they are great friends. Tell me John, who would know you better than your ‘true’ friends?

The tone of your response sounds like you are disappointed!

Johnny   October 19th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

I think its very important to listen the statement by the General in its entirety. Like most moderate Americans he is put off by the choice of Sara Palin as McCain's running mate.

Sara Palin was a move that backfired BIG TIME!

Walt   October 19th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

For you skeptics that will tie this to race... He served as a White House Fellow under President Nixon. He served as National Security Advisor under President Reagan. He also commanded an Army Corp during that period. He served as Chairman of the Joint Cheifs of Staff under President Bush I, and as Secretary of State under President Bush II.

Now all of a sudden you wish to claim he is voting because Obama is black. The man has served republican white leaders all of his life. Now he votes his conscious and you say it's race.

Had McCain selected Sen Hutchinson or Sen Snow, Powell might have supported him. There is not a single intelligent republican that wants to see Palin in the white house. They are following the party line.

Obama 08!!

GOD Bless the Obama-Biden Leadership Team!

Chris   October 19th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Being a democrat, I do remember that McCain has got 4 endorsements from former Secretary of States, and one is very powerful if not more so and that is Henry Kissinger, plus over 200 generals . That is powerful. I guess if you are older you would know that Kissingers would mean more. This doesn't surprise me. Powell is also bi-racial so I believe this is part also. I remember Obama saying very recently it wouldn't mean much if he got Powels' endorsement. .Powell is 72 and some people might think about his age also. But reaction from the local media is will this endorsement hurt Barack Obama because Powell was big behind the war.

Fabian   October 19th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

To Lilly,
That's just a bunch of misleading comments. Colin Powell resigned after finding out that he's been misled by the neo-cons who wanted to invade a country that has never even contemplated on attacking the US. For once, I blamed him for presenting misleading facts to the world, but now I know the catalysts behind the invasion were Cheney and Don Rumsfeld. So stop confusing the readers, the Obama did not release such a statement.

It should come as no surprise that General Powell would endorse Barack Obama over John McCain. Barack Obama has maintained his coolness while John McCain has showed how hot and agitated he can be. In these times we need a steady, intelligent leader, who truly puts the people first. After all this is the United States of America, a country with a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. We all love this Country and everything that it stands for. No political party holds a monopoly on patriotism. We all appreciate the sacrifices that are made by those who serve in the Military, and by all those who came before us, who built this Nation with their own sweat and blood.
Obama/Biden '08

tucker   October 19th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

francisco, a political party is just that and not more important than a nation.

if a person belongs to a party but feels compelled to endorse a candidate of an opposing party for the well being of his country.then so be it.

that shows that they are a man/woman of character who makes up their own mind and stand up for what they feel is right, instead of conforming to rules set by other people with other priorities.

partisanship will destroy any good democracy.

Obama 08: white, female, 60 yr old supporter   October 19th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Colin Powell, who indeed put country first knowing the racist and derogatory comments that will be said about him, just added to the depth and scope of the bipartisan support for Barack Obama. It isn't just the endorsement but the itemizing of all of his reasons for his decision to vote for Obama.

This whole nonsense of Obama being a socialist is ridiculous when Warren Buffet one of the world's most successful capitalists is a supporter and economic advisor for Obama.

henriettap   October 19th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

Colin Powell endorsed Obama because of the negative way the McCain campaign has been run it's very divisive the way that they have been depicting Obama no matter that they say otherwise, for McCain to been in the military he does not act like it.With the Rove team that smeared him so horribly in 2004 he is surrounded by a team that is stuck on stupid.

cmgmaggie   October 19th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

A final verdict on the Republican party. They're out of ideas, they don't know what to do, and they're out of luck. Attacks, distortions, lies, and confusion is all they know. Powell only brings the exclamation point.

Pat Pa.   October 19th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

Francisco Siqueiros-
The great thing about America is that you can be registered one party but you only have to vote for that party in the primaries. ( at least in Pa ) You are free to vote for anyone you want to in the general election. If you do not like the candidate running for your party, and you think the candidate running in another party is better, there is nothing wrong in voting for him.
In fact, in this case, Obama is so much better most people should be able to see that no matter how they are registered. I have always crossed party lines, however, not this time. I am going straight Democrat this time.

sandee in Portland   October 19th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

I disagree that if you're a Republican, you have to go for the Republican even if you do not like the candidate. Same is true for Democrats. No one should be voting a straight ticket. People should look at the issues, do their research and vote for the person they think can get the job done, whether it's Republican, Democrate or Independent, and whether they're voting for President, Congressman, Senator or even a local State representative. I give Powell a large pat on the back for voting for who he thinks can do the job best, and I've been a registered Republican my whole life. Do I always vote Republican, no! I vote for the best candidate for the job.

I think that all this nonsense about Obama not being able to lead this country has now been put to rest with the endorsement of Obama by General Colin Powell. Colin Powell's rational for endorsing Obama was the absolutely the most thoughtful, measured I've yet heard. I agree with his evaluation 100% but also appreciate hiskind words about Senator McCain. My evaluation is that McCain did not even run his own campaign, so why should he be elected to run the country?

Hispanic for Obama   October 19th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

An excellent endorsement. A retired military general thinks Obama is fit to lead this nation, as well as other key Republican congressmen. Gen. Colin Powell showed his intellect in this video in his explanation of his endorsement as well as explaining the current status of this country.

I think this is huge and could be key in grabbing the important independent voters.

What worries me most is the statement that if you are a Republican, or Democrat you must vote that way. The reason we are in the mess we are in today is that too many people voted party and not with their brain. I don't need Rush etc to tell me how to vote.
As for Colin Powell, if he had of resigned when he was "bushwacked ' in the UN I would have respected him more. He didn't show much leadership sticking with Bush. Mrs Whitman showed leadership by reigning after being " bushwacked" a couple of times. She showed real leadeship, the rest were sheep, not leaders. But see what happened to her, most people have no idea who she is today. Her I respect.

I don't ever remember an election where so many Republicans and Republican commentators came out in favor of the Democratic ticket, and expressed serious doubts about the Republican ticket. It's certainly unusual, isn't it? It's not just the usual rats-leaving-a-sinking-ship thing, because we didn't see anything like this with Bob Dole, who was even further down in the polls. I explain it because of the clear-as-day difference in quality of the candidates (with a special nod to the breathtakingly inadequate Sarah Palin).

Linda said – "Obama surrounds himself with the best & the brightest." I think that is so true it's worth restating. McCain has not. I am ready for an intelligent forward looking President and Vice President. I'm tired of the "good old boy" concept for our leader. It didn't work nationally or internationally in our best interests. Time for real change. Let's try an intelligent leader for a change.

My respect for General Powell grew not just with his endorsement but the way in which he went about coming to his decision. He has solidified my decision to support Senator Obama as well.

Kevin Evans   October 19th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

This proves how shallow are Powell's values. How can he serve on Bush's cabinet then endorse the candidate who has made his entire campaign on being anti-Bush. This rings very self-serving to me.

theogracias   October 19th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

Spin this McCain...Let me guess: THIS IS GREAT NEWS FOR JOHN MCCAIN!!!

Denise   October 19th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

Colin Powell's thoughtful endorsement of Senator Barack Obama for President is so important not only because it comes from someone who is highly respected across the board but because it demonstrates the high caliber of people Obama has surrounding him. It could not have been said better – Obama is the leadership America needs now!

Ukraine   October 19th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

Unwilling fellow prisoner   October 19th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Don't you feel better now Mr. Powell? You should, America needs you and Obama/Biden

jumping on the bandwagon   October 19th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Just another sad case of ill-informed decision making. To base your vote on a recent campaign strategy, and then not even explain the strategy accurately just shows me how "out of touch" Powell is with his own base. Ayers is one of MANY examples of shady characters in Obama's past. It's not a true terrorist label being put on Obama, it's that time and again, he has surrounded himself and exposed himself to very "radical" individuals. It a question of character, trust, and judgement. Not to mention Obama is a Chicago Democrat, and that should scare the crap out of the entire world, if he only knew what he is really voting for.

Joan , Ontario   October 19th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

The reasons General Powell gave for endorsing Senator Obama spoke volumes. He obviously had thought long and hard about this and it was a difficult decision because he likes Senator McCain and has been a Republican for a long time. He obviously put "Country First". He said at the forum of former Secretaries of State that he was waiting until after the debates to make his final decision. Well he must have liked what he saw and heard from Obama. He spoke about several reasons why he made this decision including Obama's steadiness and ability to be Presidential, his ability to improve America's standing in the world, his foreign and economic policies and his substance and intelligence. There are other reasons too but these stood out to me. His reasons for not voting for McCain included his handling of the financial crisis, his VP pick who is not ready to be president, his similar economic and foreign policies to Bush and his disappointment with the kind of negative campaign McCain has been running. It will be interesting to see if the Republicans dare to attack Powell as they have others because he is such a respected and monumental political figure.

Sam   October 19th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

Endorsements to Obama from several prominent Republican figures in recent days, and concerns raised by seveal conservative columnists about McCain campain, reinforces, that common sense in the Republican party is not totally dead after all! Good showing folks.

conny   October 19th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

I salute you sir, thanks!

Cindy Nelson   October 19th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

I'm glad that Powell himself would rather see an America that is United and not Divided. I never thought that I would agree with a Republican, but what he said about why he is voting Obama, I just completely agree with.

I also want to say, Why is it ok for the taxpayer to take on the debt of our country, but it's not ok for a fair tax plan and to redistribute the wealth in our country?

Richard Miami Florida   October 19th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

I think Powell may be correct, the Republican Party seems to want to divide America. We are as Americans at our best when we work together not against each other. I am 50 white and the son of a steel worker that fought in WWII. Now, my father would never vote for Obama but I am not my father.

To francisco siqueiros:

Isn't that what McCain says he does? He stands up to his party's leadership, does not vote with the party all the time and that makes him someone we can trust right?

So by endorsing Obama...isn't this just showing that Colin Powell is really a maverick? That he is putting country first?

CountryFirst   October 19th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

Colin Powell covered all the bases with his decision to endorse Obama. The McCain camp continues to be negative even with the response to Fmr Sec Powell's choice.

Vee   October 19th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

If you like the last: In his autobiography he had promised his wife he would not run. This election has shown me how lazy people are about reading up on the players in the political game. It's like interviewing someone for a job and never reading the resume or checking references. You cant complain if you dont do YOUR homework.

Excellent choice on General Powell's part. I watched him endorse Obama on Meet the Press. He made a very cogent argument for choosing Obama over McCain.

Personally, I have always respected Mr. Powell and had often told people that if he were to run for President, He'd be someone I thought I could trust. Boy, was I wrong. I never thought he would endorse someone with as little patriotism as BO, Even with his ties to radical groups. Shame on you Mr. Powell

Sir, yes sir! As an active duty Army officer I appreciate Gen. Colin Powell's expertise and judgment. Contrary to what the McCain camp would have the electorate believe, he (McCain) does not have the solid backing of the military. We have seen too many comrades go down while fighting a war with no defined cause or objective. It's time to bring our troops home.

Mr. Colin Powell. It takes more than an average man to step up and do the right thing. In your career, you have transcended the lines between parties, I would have voted for you, too, in the nineties. Obama will be the catalyst to move this country forward, and crystallize the greatness of this country. We are all Americans!

I'll bet you a dollar   October 19th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

I'll bet he wouldn't be endorsing Nobama if he were white.

t   October 19th, 2008 2:01 pm ET

i think its amazing that someone would discredit Colin Powell's endorsement of Obama as another prominent black supporting a black candidate when in fact Powell has been supporting white candidates for years. if you can show me documentation that Powell supported Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson run for president then YOU WILL HAVE A VALID POINT.
and if not then maybe you might need to be truthful and admit that you are a racist. because it really" took longer than 2 years to ruin our country"

FormerAlaskanFemale   October 19th, 2008 2:01 pm ET

Mr. Powell, I have always had a great deal of respect for you. Especially your role as a defense leader; I have even greater respect for you now, because I know that a lot of people in your party are not going to understand your decision. However, I think your explanation and rationale are objective and come with a great deal of merit.

Should a President Obama invite you to serve in his cabinet, I think this will further demonstrate his level of prudence in governing this country, and although you are not looking for another job in government, I appreciate the fact that you would consider it another opportunity to serve your fellow Americans.

Obama is head-n-shoulders more qualified to be President than McCain. That's why Powell endorsed him. He's voting for the smart guys this time.

McCain is not the brightest bulb in the box and Palin is not the sharpest tack. The General put country ahead of party.

There, I said it!

It was said by McCain that foreign policy was one of Obama's weak points. This endorsement should erase completely any argument that Obama isn't ready to lead abroad. I am waiting for November 5, when the USA will once again begin to regain respect around the world that has been severely damaged by George Bush. Thank you, General Powell.

Dick Lugar will be Obama's Secretary of Defense. I hope Colin Powell is Secretary of State again.

Lorrie   October 19th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

I hope people will really listen to the reasons General Powell is endorsing Obama and why he has concerns, not only about the tone of the McCain campaign, but also the direction the GOP is choosing to take.

I'm a former Republican (now Independent) that no longer even recognizes my former party.

Thank you, General Powell, for your service and for your strength to speak the truth.

Response to Rob: Well...there may be other people who may endorse because they are vying for cabinet positions; I don't buy that argument with Powell...He has integrity; he resigned his cabinet position, remember, when probably his suggestions were bulldozed by the ilks of Rice and Cheney.

Btw...I am neither a Caucasian nor a black, so you can't "color" code my response as biased by race...

SHELLI1313   October 19th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

This is a momentous movement One of the Greatest Military Men is the United States and an Honest forth right persons in the Republican party. Powell got out of the wmd mess before it got really nasty like it is now. He understands that these are very bad Economic times and we need a person in the Oval Office that is Calm and not erratic, able to listen to opposing views and not step on them but check them out and move on them if they are sound. That Obama is thinking and concerned about America and Americans. And that he is a Christian and a very honorable Man.

Brian Rich   October 19th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

Colin Powell is one of the most intelligent men in the United States.

Andrew   October 19th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

I didn't hear any criticism toward Powell from the Obama campaign at all like Lilly is stating. This is pure propaganda that is the very essence of what the republican party has become. To say as Palin stated that they would only campaign in pro American parts of the country should disqualify them both for the highest offices in the land. We simply cannot have people in office that see some of their fellow Americans as the enemy. Enough! It's time to move forward.

David   October 19th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

I'm a strong Obama supporter. I understand that maybe this endorsement may sway some independents. Nevertheless, he may not be as bad as Rumsfeld, Cheney, Wolfowitz,, Bush and that rest of the gang of war criminals but Powel is still complicit in war crimes and torture.

hD   October 19th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

...and on 'Patriot' yardstick. Patrick Henry was a Patriot; Paul Revere was a Patriot; hell, Cripus Attucks (look him up folks) was a Patriot. The term Patriot is what the term 'Hero' was around 2001-2002; overly used.

Nice to see Colin support Barack. Unfortunately, his endorsement to many is seen as a black man supporting another black man despite Colin's reputation. However his oponion also underscores how turned off he is by the republican's campaign against Obama.

KBC   October 19th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Although I'm delighted that Colin Powell endorsed Senator Obama for President, I hope that - if people didn't hear it live on Meet the Press - that they will find it somewhere on the internet and listen to his seven minutes of reasoning. I heard Secretary Powell a few months ago talking about the thought process for choosing the next President. He gives an excellent, well thought-out rationale of why he believes that Senator Obama is the best choice for our country and our future, and I hope that people will apply the same decision-making process to their decisions. I have great respect for Secretary Powell and I appreciate his wisdom.

Trent   October 19th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

As a Democrat...I have always been excited about a Powell presidency....since he never decided to run it really hasnt made a difference...but his endorsement is important. He is not just any general. This is a big endorsement!!!

Iraq Vet   October 19th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Yep, another retired 4 star general playing politics. He was the one who said we should stop in the first gulf war instead of going to Bagdad. If we would have pursued that route we would not be in the Iraq war we are in now.

outraged   October 19th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

it is rediculous that people would say that the only reason powell endorsed obama is because he is black. do you say the same thing when a white person endorses mccain? if not, then apparently you are the one with the racial bias. think about it.

Sam   October 19th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Response to Francisco Siqueiros: Your comment about supporting a candidate from your own party even if you don't like them...several problems with that approach:
a. If you don't think outside the box, you'll be making the same mistakes.
b. Your own "Maverick" duos (McCain and Palin) themselsves don't support that idea by their own admission.

So let me ask you, if you followed your leader who you disagreed with or disliked and he fell into a ditch, are go blindly follow him?

Joe the Troll   October 19th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Maybe those people who insist that black people support Obama only because of race can explain to me why Sharpton, Jackson, Mosely-Braun, McKinney, and Keyes never got this level of support. I think that people tend to expect others to act like they do themselves, and so those that intend to vote for McCain only because he's white expect the same from black people.

Harrison   October 19th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Gen Powell's message was clear. McCain has made an inexcusable choice with Palin. The GOP has lost its message and has started moving far right.

Stooping to the "socialist" card and Karl Rove-type fear mongering probably was the last straw for Powell.

Please... someone... anyone... Joe the Plummer, a soccer mom or dad, even a pig with lipstick... Ask Sarah if she even knows what "socialism" is and how it applies to Obama!!!

All she's doing is stirring the hate/fear base of "real" America who might be convinced by such shameful, wrong rhetoric. McCain, himself, should know better and put a stop to it... because it harms ALL of America... This is what Powell is talking about.

John   October 19th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

A prominent Republican like General Powell endorsing the Democratic candidate really goes to show that he is putting the country before politics. It also highlights just how exceptional Barack Obama really is. For the first time in my life I am excited about a candidate. The stakes right now are so high for our country and the whole world. What a crime it would be for McCain and the truly ignorant Palin to win. We need to get out there and vote.

For those claiming that it's only because they are both black, how sad that you are so small minded and short sighted. funny how those comments always include the line "I'm not racist, but ".......

CNN and its viewers, be prepared for these catch-phrases from the Conservative strategists and analysts on various shows:
a. Colin Powell is irrelavant; he left the Bushy long time ago;
b. Obama picked up only one endorsement whereas McCain picked up 4 from his own party.
c. Well...it was all expected, and whatelse would you expect...he is black and he endorsed another one...
d. He is probably looking for a cabinet position... etc. etc...

Your "strategists" and "analysts", as usual will speak all non-sense without regard to Powell's stature, his well defined, well worded reasons behind his endorsement.

I for one have held Powell in high regard always, and if anything, my respect for him increased ten fold, because he showed good judgement and analysis.

You seriously need your head examined. And you can't preface that "I'm not a racist" , by following with such a thin statement. Given Powell's 'clear lack of judgement' in his decision to endorse Obama, disqualifies your support of the same man as a Presidential Candidate.

Chapman   October 19th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

That was by far the most thoughtful, intelligent, articulate endorsement yet by any Republican for Obama. I believe Powell was duped in to supporting the war. This is a heartfelt attempt to right that wrong & put US back on solid footing. Thankyou!!!

I know we all have various opinions, but some of you just are not thinking your comments through. The comments of Lilly, Rob and Fransico leave me speechless. God love ya!

You would think that during the time Barack/Hillary were fighting it out in the primaries that John McCain would have come up with a strategy to defeat either candidate, but no! He spent more time attempting to distance himself from Bush and now his support for Bush policies have come back to haunt him. John McCain has not run a good campaign while Barack has been steadfast!

I love John McCain, but Barak Obama is the future and in order to compete with other countries who are cathching up to our science, technology, economics, etc. The vote is clear! Thank you General Powell you are an honorable man.

If you like the last 2 years.... vote Obama:
I was waiting for this to happen. I have had whites supporting McCain feel compelled to tell me that they would support Condoleeza and Powell if they had ran for President – giving me the "I have a Black friend" vibe. Now the same man many have said they respected cannot make a decision beyond skin? So depite the criticisms he clearly laid out, his skin keeps him from making a rational decision outside of the race box?

As you have shown, no matter what, no matter the background of a person – some people will continue to believe that Blacks cannot think crtitically and are unable to find reason to support a fellow Black person.

Thank you for continuing to perpetuate the belief in stereotypes – suppoprting the fact that the USA still has a long way to go re: race relations.

Just sad........

The endorsements are coming fast and furious for Obama. As of today, four times as many newspapers have endorsed Obama over McCain. It is nice to see people and organizations with integrity endorsing the best candidate for president, Barack Obama! Thank you General Powell for your well spoken, well considered endorsement of Barack Obama!

Ditto   October 19th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

Not reported in this article is that Powell said a major factor in his decision to support Obama was McCain’s selection of Palin as VP. He sees her as completely unqualified to be president, which he describes as the true job of the VP. Powell clearly stated that her selection by McCain showed a fundamental lack of judgment.

djak   October 19th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

Following judgement and instincts about your voting decision is exactly why I am registered non-partisan voter. I vote based on whom I believe can do the best job, not what party they are attached to. I'm glad to see Colin Powell feels the same way.

Obama/Biden 08

Vicki   October 19th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

Listen closely to what Colin Powell said on why he is not voting for John McCain - Sarah Palin, divisiveness, robo-call, questioning another candidate patriotism, etc. The story about the young Muslim soldier buried at Arlington made me proud! As a 23 year veteran I was glad someone said that. I know the differences in the military, yet we are able to FIGHT together for the U.S. This is America. Today Secretary Powell redeemed his reputation for me and I hope he doesn't let anyone belittle his endorsement and strong chatisement of the Republican Party.

I got up early yesterday in Albuquerque, NM and voted for the BARACK/BIDEN Ticket. May God Bless America and in his eyes we all are his children...and I am glad the Democratic Party looks like what God intended the world to look like ( people of all races, gender, and age). That's the America I fought for and that is the America I want my daughter to grow up in. The differences of American citizens is what makes American great....not scary!!! God has not given us a spirit of fear, but he Republican Party sure has....Enough!

Meka   October 19th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

Thank you General Powell...
In fact, I had visioned you as the VP. But I'm also a realist, and I suppose that would have been asking too much, of our Citizen's.

America is aware, that initially, you DID NOT SUPPORT THE IRAQ INVASION.

Thank you again for your JUDGEMENT and your VISION.

It's amazing that Obama supporters can accept Powell with open arms but forget that Powell was a central character in feeding the country false intelligence that led to the Iraq war.

Powell and the Bush Administration should be put into jail for lying to the country!

Frankly, I'm glad Powell has endorsed Obama... Liars of a feather flock to Obama!

Excellent! Colin Powell is a very reasoned, intelligent, grounded Republican. I can listen to him! He should be in Obama's cabinet, someone suggested Secretary of Defense–good thought

I loved Powell's response to questioning Obama's faith. I'm paraphrasing here "He is not a Muslim, he is a Christian. But the correct response should be, so what if he were a Muslim? This is a diverse country and there is nothing wrong with being a Muslim in this country."

The McCain camp needs to stop the name calling and smears now!

ts   October 19th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

Thank you Powell!!! Americans this is a man who work with Bush and know that it is time for a change. Its not about color or about the party you with. Its all about getting someone in the WH that will be able to handle anything and for anybody to know how Washignton need to be handle would be Powell/that he knows that Barack would be the men for the job. I worry every day that the race is getting away from us with ALL this Horrendous Publicity... This is like a Breath of fresh air...And I literally cried as I read the story and how thoughtful and "sharp" he spoke... It was a Powerful and yet SOFT message.. Like Sen McCain said " quoting "Teddy" Walk softly but carry a big stick.. Col Powell is like a tree....I love him always have.... God Bless

Colin Powell's intelligent, measured, pragmatic endorsement of Barack Obama reinforces my decision to vote for Barack Obama. The Obama-Biden team provides America with the leadership, judgement, inclusiveness and temperment we need for today's extraordinary complex issues.

This endorsement could be a 'game-changer' . Let this be a wake up call to McCain and the RNC to back off the negative and hostile campaign rhetoric and campaign on substantive areas of disagreement and approach. Not Ayers, not Acorn.

As a registered Republican, I've donated to the Obama campaign and will again if the McCain, Palin and the RNC don't change the tactics. Obama doesn't need my donation, but it helps send the message that negativity is not the way to demonstrate leadership.

Christine El Paso   October 19th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

I'm glad to see the party politics falling to the waistside with some people like Powell. It's very refreshing and shows that some people think for themselfs. Mr. Powell is a very respected man in American Politics, and his whole statement on his endorsement shows why!

Dem for McCain   October 19th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

Glad to see Powell waited to see who was going to win, so he could secure his new cabinet position.

Interesting to see also that race really does trump all other considerations, whether consciously or sub-consciously.

CaroleK   October 19th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

General Colin Powell's endorsement of Barack Obama has is extremely powerful. Powell became the Bush Administrations "sacririficial lamb" on the Iraq War. I watched on CNN International in Europe the day that, within 5 minutes, VP Cheney and Gen. Powell contradicted each other on Iraq! Powell was forced to spit out the Bush line at the U.N. His discomfort was obvious. As an General, a former Secretary of State, a Republican; his endorsement is as weighty to Republicans as Senator Kennedy's.was to Democrats. Anyone who thinks this is about race, is delusional. Once the hype about Palin died down and Americans heard her views and "qualifications," any intelligent, educated person knew that this woman was a reckless, impulsive choice of a man who placed his political aspirations far ahead of this country he claims comes first.

Listen to General Colin Powell's statements, Why? His press conference was very informative, his reasons are logical.

Cathy   October 19th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

I was truly touched by Powell's story about the Muslim-American who gave his life for this country in the Iraq war. That solider loved this country just as much as the next solider....no matter what his faith was.

I wish the republican would stop trying to demonize the mid-eastern faiths. The republicans (including Palin) seem to forget 9/11 was executed by radical extremist and not American-Muslisim, Arabs, etc.

ABG   October 19th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

If Barack Obama was more like Colin Powell, he would be leading by alot more in the polls.

Given how Obamadisplayed himself before and during the primary, especially the comment that people from PA have hatred for others that are different from them, I do not trust who he really is inside.

I am a lifelong Democrat who is really nervous about electing a man no one really knows who has no accomplishments.

I hope Obama delivers on what he promises if elected.

sue   October 19th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Watching General Powell this morning, was a perfect example of a leader putting his/her country first-I hope Mccain & Palin were taking notes.
Gen. Powell was the cherry on top...His stamp of approval was the last thing the american people needed to feel comortable voting for Sen. Obama.
The 3am call came in, and funny enough the only person who picked up the phone was Obama. The rest were trying to get their sell lines in...POW, Maverick, Country First, Thanks but no Thanks, Joe the Plumber....ENOUGH!

Joe the Skeptic   October 19th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

That is great!! Of course, CNN is leading with McCain's rhetoric. Just like yesterday when Obama spoke before 100,000 people, but the lead story was (again) McCain's rhetoric. What's going on at CNN that political rhetoric is deemed more important that actual events?

To "If you like the last 2 years...."

Why is that when a black politician endorses Obama the only reason you can find is because he's black. What do you call a white politician endorsing McCain?

To say you would vote for Powell if he were running and in the next breath say his decision making skills are bad is confusing. Powell explained thoroughly why he was choosing Obama. He also explained why he did not endorse McCain. To discredit his decision based on skin color is ignorant and a double standard. Using your reasoning only white politicians can endorse Obama and only black politicians should endorse McCain. Using your reasoning Obama is still on top.

What you and others who think like you do seem to get is this race is not about skin color. It's about issues and how you feel the candidates will handle them.

McCain is a bad choice for United State's Health! Powell is admitting and respecting Barack Obama calm and cool nature and firmness in leading and displaying leadership something that this country needs the most.

Obama/Biden all the way, there is no second guessing about the most Important Election of our lives.

McCain's number two pick scares the crap out of me and the rest of the Republican supports. Slowly the Facts and the Real Agenda behind McCain's camp are coming out.

Watch the real drama unfold behing McCain. He'll emotionally break down.

Daniel   October 19th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

This is neither surprise nor news – when it came down to it, the "first" black general HAD to support the "first" black presidential candidate. How could he not look at his grandchildren and tell them, "No, I didn't support the guy who looked like you."

No doubt about it – this race is about race. McCain is not another Bush any more than Obama is another Jesse Jackson.

Obama just presonifies change better than McCain because he's a "first," and a "first" of ANYTHING is a powerful symbol of change.

Let's just see how much he actually WILL change, let's see how much he can REALLY change Washington, and I guarantee you, if he is elected, he won't win a second term because he won't be able to bring all this so-called "change." When will people wake up and realize Obama's "Change" is his race, and as we all know, skin color is only skin deep.

Shannon   October 19th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

The same Powell who lied before the UN to get us into an ugly war that has killed thousands of people, wow, I'm impressed!

Ken Sawyer   October 19th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

It is a shame we could not have had Colin Powell running instead of the one who runs with hate spreading preachers and former terrorists. Are we in such dire straits that we need this man this close after 9-11 who we know nothing about ? He promises the world to people and will not give us a straight answer how he intends to pay for it except he is going to take it from the people who are willing to work and give it to those who have never worked or contributed a dime to the system. The Liberals created the mess in the inner cities and I sure as hell will not vote for a man that tells me he is going to take what I work for and keep up a bunch of drug heads. Our prisons are full of Liberal mistakes. Liberals turn a good system into Socialism which destroys everything it touches.

If you read other web post about Powells endorsement it will shock you to read all these racist comments. Powell only endorsed Obama because he is black. Yet, they would have praised Powell as a great thoughtful man if he chose McCain. I think that Gen. Powell gave a heartful explanation of why he picked Obama. I can also respect Gen Powells decision not to go on the campaign trail out of respect for McCain which shows the character of Gen Powell.

In my area of Ohio this didn't go down good with alot of Democrats. What was said was that Obama had made the remark he didn't need Powell's endorsement. There was around 10 people said since this happen they would now vote for Nadar or write in Senator Clinton/s name. Their reason was because Powell supported the war and now he endorsed Obama and to them it didn't make sense. I thought this was interesting

francisco siqueiros,

Your point makes no sense to me. For one thing, Senator Lieberman supports Senator McCain and Governor Palin and other prominent democrats have done the same because they didn't like Senator Obama. For another thing, people should support the candidates they trust regardless of party. If your party's candidate does not offer a choice you can support, vote for the other party's candidate. They call this exercise democracy.

Marie   October 19th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

I think this is great and before the endorsement I knew it would be Obama because Colin Powell is a man with great integrity.People criticized Biden now because he said Obama was not ready to be president before he dropped out the race for president and look he is Obama's v/p pick.As time went on over the last 20 or so months and now in this election Biden hisself would admit now he made a mistake by saying what he did. Seeing what Obama has showed not only him but the american people that Obama is presidential and can lead this country. Also the negative ads that McCain campaign continues to run Mr Powell siad saying Obama was a terriost, the Bill Ayers issues and stating of course these things aren't true.Lastly Sara Palin not ready to be president as a man that was secretray of state and a military general he would now if a person is qualified or not to make that decision at any given moment to make a decision that would not put this country in grave danger and she is not the person to be president should something happens to McCain that she could answer that call at 3am

Candia   October 19th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

To the people who claim Powell endorsed Obama because they're both African-Americans: how narrow-minded can you be? Does that mean that all white politicians endorse each other because they are white? Give me a break!

I was skeptical of Powell's endorsement, because he has lost a lot of respect in my eyes for either knowingly lying to the American people and the world or being so gullibe as to be letting himself used as a tool. But I must say that since then, he has done his best to regain with well-thought statements.

I also like the obvious wide-reaching context in which he places his endorsement, which goes beyond just simply an election, but also sees America as part of this diverse world, in which openness, nuance and diplomacy are so sorely needed.

"Powell sold the Iraq war to the entire world, which enabled Obama's nomination. In a sarcastic turn of event now he endorses the guy! I believe there are more reasons to the endorsement!"
_______________________________________________
So now all the ridiculous excuses, rationalizations, and accusations start. I'll go for the explanation that an American hero, perhaps the most respected military man of his generation, broke with his party to endorse the best candidate for President of the United States. Sorry, Obama haters – this is what Country First really looks like.

Country first is not the vile, divisive campaign that John McCain and Sarah Palin are running. I fully expect that McCain will regret his actions upon reflection. At this point he should consider running a campaign that he would want his grandchildren to see for the last two weeks of this campaign and then pledge to support President Elect Obama on the night of November 4.

Mighty Joe Young   October 19th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Powell made a huge mistake when he joined the Bush administration. His reputation will forever be tarnished by his WMD speech before the UN, which convinced me to support the invasion of Iraq. However, everyone makes mistakes, and he made a big one.

I am puzzled by those who can still support the Bush Administration and by those who are going to vote for McCain. Even though a minority of Americans support the crazy policies that got us into this mess, there are still some who support it. Who ARE these people and what, if anything, are they thinking?

Victor Santos   October 19th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

The Baraka Hussein Obama endorsemente by Collin Powell, is not a surprise. Surprise would be if he does´nt did that. Because they are brothers. Americans open your eyes. The November 4, is near. Pay attention on the african continent. Is it that we americans want to our country?... Think about the suffering that you will be imposing to americans generations to come. All socialist and comunists partys around the world are very happy for Barak Hussein Obama to be elected the U.S.A. president. Specially europeans; because this will be the way that they will feel good, when America goes down the tubes. Europeans know that, because they will look good, on the America´s misery, and forget their ones.

lol   October 19th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Ryan - MI   October 19th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

This is all political for Powell. Endorse a Democrat, seperate yourself from Bush, then run for President in four years. This is the same guy that basically pushed for the Iraq war, backed Bush's policies and now is turning his back on everything he endorsed. In four years he'll do the same to Obama.

Greg FL.   October 19th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

After listening to McCain in Ohio this Morning. He has no honor. He continues to lie and his lies are getting worse. He has wrapped himself around "Joe The Plumber." The guy is a liar and doesn't pay taxes. This is what we can expect from McCain I guess.
Way to go Powell. and thank you for standing up to your party.

jeff @ MA   October 19th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

This smart move allows me to forgive Powell for being apart of the Bush regime and supporting the lies to legitimize a war with a sovereign nation. Rumsfeld on the other hand has a long way to go for redemption.

John   October 19th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

The Genral has spoken. Now do you believe? This puts a lot of pressure on Obama. If elected he must give more than lip service to the opposition. (Don't pull a "W"). I am confident that I can move from the undecided roll and vote the Obama/Biden ticket.

"Let me just say categorically I'm proud of the people that come to our rallies...I'm not going to stand for people saying that the people that come to my rallies are anything but the most dedicated, patriotic men and women that are in this nation and they're great citizens."
Bad, bad move, McLoser.
McCain cracks under pressure. McCain shows his ugly side... and ugly it is. *shudder*

Sue in MI   October 19th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

I respect Powell. He left his position after learning of the lies and manipulation of facts that led to the speech he gave selling the war for Bush and Cheney and Rumsfeld. I can only pray that this helps the people who have not made their decisions yet. I shudder at a war happy President, a VP who doesn't know that every state is "pro-American" and her sidekick who would have access to high level security, because he's her "best friend" and that's how they do things in Alaska before they secede.

Joe   October 19th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

I couldn't agree with Secretary Powell more. Senator Obama does offer the chance at transformational leadership. I have felt that from the very first day he announced. And now more than ever, our country needs that.

I also agree with the Secretary Powell that it is sad that the GOP campaign has turned so negative, and, in fact, I also agree that it turn a huge turn in that direction with the selection of Governor Palin to run as Vice President. Since the convention, the GOP has offered no constructive solutions to the issues facing Americans today. Their only message is to "fear" the Democrats. Funny, in 2004 I didn't hear them suggesting that folks vote for John Kerry because we needed someone to balance the GOP-controlled Congress. There is no credibility whatsoever to their messages - and frankly, I expected Senator McCain to run a better campaign.

m c   October 19th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

These are tough times, brought in by the administration that I admittedly voted for in both elections. But I've learned from my mistake, so I am voting Democratic for the first time in decades.

Thank you Mr. Powell for putting your Country First.

Jody Monroe   October 19th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

General Powell is a good example of what each of us Americans should do: Evaluate each candidate completely - and then vote based on the candidates' ability to lead America on the issues.

INTEGRITY – Gen. Powell is a man of few words, but a person of exceptional integrity. A fine example of integrity, something we need more of in America.

Machiavelli, Baton Rouge, LA   October 19th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

I think General Powell lost some credibility when he became a minion of George W. and not the general who should have resigned in protest leading up to the war. It is known that Powell did not support military action against Iraq, but he allowed George W. to question his party loyalty.

Nevertheless, General Powell was instrumental in planning in executing the first Gulf War.

Debby middle aged white lady in PA   October 19th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

The style and logic behind his thinking is what makes Powell's endorsement stand out. Compare it to some of the ugly lies that have exemplified the McCain campaign lately where the logic to choose McCain is based on fear tactics and divisions. We need to unite as a country. I am sorry McCain chose to go with Bush's cronies to run his campaign. He was better than that. Contrast that with Obama's campaign which has chosen to stick with the issues when they could have gone after countless areas of McCain's political and personal like not to mention Palin. If these horrid Bush style tactics start to work I hope the ODems are prepared to bring up the witch doctor, Palin's ties to terrorist successionists, the abuse of power, the video highighting her church's Pentecostal brand of religions plans to "infiltarte" politics and business, McCain's history of infideliy and the cover ups for Cindy's drug addiction crimes. Anyone who voted for Bush and regrets it after Iraq and this econmy has a chance to redeem themselves this time and vote for Obama so our standing in the world and our economy can grow again. We are one country under God and Obama can take us into the future. Please vote for Obama Biden on Nov. 4th.

Richard   October 19th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

Colin Powell was thought by many Americans to have the most integrity of anyone in the Bush administration. He has shown that they were right.

reality   October 19th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

I believe even Bush given a chance he would endorse Obama. The only person who would go for Mccain is Dick Chenney. So those commenting that Colin is only supporting a fellow black man need to do some history study. Blacks have voted for white democrat candidates in large numbers. Stop spininng things around and blame the mcain for running a campaign that has no bearing. So if you want to vote for mccain you not been racist you just been stupid.

Any normal person should support OBAMA/BIDEN. Mccain is too boaring to watch him speaking in my TV screen. OBAMA is a political star which any nation would wish to have. He is a vertical starter like the Apachi-helicopter.

LaTreetha E. Sharpley   October 19th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

As I listened to General Powell, give his reasons for voting for Senator Obama, I realized that I had many of the same thoughts in my decision. I know it was very difficult for him to go against his party and make the statement. I say thank you to General Powell, for putting your country first and not just sitting back and saying nothing. It is time that people spoke up to say what Senator McCain and Govenor Palin are doing to this great nation is wrong. We have been divided to long and now is the time that we as America step forward to say we are one nation, and we fall and rise together.

Obama is transformational figure? Give me a break. Obama has run the dirtiest smear campaign ever starting with Hillary and continuing with McCain. He cannot talk about the issues because he has no plan and when he puts out a plan, we get so many clarifications, I still do not know what is the plan.

Several newspapers have carried stories about Obama is redefining taxes. He is using the key word fee increases for some of his programs. Yet, most of the newspapers have not covered this slight of the hand by Obama. WHY?

As a PUMA, this year's election coverage by the press has been totally disgusting. As a REAL Democrat, I am appalled by how far left the party has become. I already voted and it was not for Obama, as a protest vote against the Democratic elite, I voted for McCain. I have never seen a more elitist nominee for the Democrats and I pray the party is able to realize it is losing a significant base because of Obama.

Colin Powell is a brilliant man, the party he belongs to is stooping to new lows, he knows that and doesnt support their actions. He also stated previously that someone who had been a prisoner of war for 5 years and tortured by his captors should not be trusted to make the decisions in crisis with his finger on the trigger. Powell is right, he knows the military and he knows John McCain, OBVIOUSLY there is big problems with what is going on in his campaign.

his interview with reporters spelled it out nicely. barack will bring unity. stop the hate!

Tabitha   October 19th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

The first comment says it all, but it's wrong. John McCain shouldn't get endorsements from well respected Republicans like Colin Powell because he's the Republican candidate. He's been WRONG every since he announced he hired dirty low down people to run his campaign and then he picked someone who isn't qualified to run a state, even though she has been, as his running mate. He hasn't put "Country First", Colin Powell did. He has made a thoughful examination of what has happened since the candidates were picked and he called it right. John

John McCain has spiraled down into a win at any cost and I understand why. He's 72 years old and this is probably his last chance. He did serve his country honorably, but some of the things he did after he came home–the most dishonorble being divorcing his wife who waited for him and took care of home for a woman half his age– and now the kind of politics he is using to win this election are reprehensible.

He's not a maverick, he's a man holding on to the past and holding it up as an example of why we owe him. If that's the case, then Al Gore should have been president based on his service and his family's service to this country. Bill Maher said it Friday night- doesn't the statute of limitations run out at some point.

Thank you for you service, Senator McCain. But, I believe the you're not going to be remembered for your great service, but for this nasty, divisive campaign. And, that's truly shameful

Glad to see Powell waited to see who was going to win, so he could secure his new cabinet position. Interesting to see also that race really does trump all other considerations, whether consciously or sub-consciously. But if you're black and support your own, that's pride. If you're white and support your own, that's racism.

Bonnie   October 19th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

Colin Powell–putting COUNTRY FIRST!

Womderful endorsement and I hope everyone really takes the time to listen to what he's saying.

Paul   October 19th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

It is not surprising that Colin Powell endorsed Senator Barack Obama. Had he not, he would have been part of the less than 5% of Blacks that are not expected to not vote for this candidate.

This fact indicates to me that race does matter and that Powell's endorsement will have littlle to no effect on the election. Powell is a lukewarm conservative at best and it would not be surprising to see him emerge as part of an Obama administration. To expect moderates to be impacted by Powell's gesture to ensure his political currency is hopeful, but naive. In fact, this may be yet another action that legitimizes Mccain, as four other Secretarys of State have endorsed him.

Perhaps Powell views this election for what it is, a seminal moment in both Black and American history. However, the racial bias that is warmly received on one side of this political ledger is not embraced by many unpolled yet clearly decided voters. These are the voters that the media refuses to discuss and indeed seem to fear. However, they are waiting in the wings for their voice to be heard on election day.

Had he endorse McCain you would have put him on the highest pedestal you could find.

He gave very sound, well thought out reasoning for his decision. He spoke the truth, which seems to be in very short supply with the GOP.

I urge everyone – democrat, republican and independent to listen to what Powell said from beginning to end! He made some striking points and we all should give it heavy consideration.

I especially like the point he made "what if he was a muslim". It's ok for muslims to die for your freedom but you belittle them everyday.

Americans need to make the right choice – and i'm firmly convinced that Barack Obama is the leader we should have for the next 8 years. Put all your bias and bigotry aside and vote for your childrens future. The world and this country is not as our parents saw it – it's different and we need someone who understands that.

GOP, you picked the wrong guy   October 19th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

I'm an Independent non-partisan voter, at first I was torn as to how to feel about Gen. Powell's pending endorsement. I did see 'Meet The Press' in it's entirety this morning, and I must say that he put things into perspective from a position of regret. For me he came across as someone who personally feels response for the shambles that our country is in to some degree.

I will say that I woke up this morning an Obama supporter and now I hope his statements will cause others who are undecided to take a hard look find out for themselves that Sen. Obama is the only option given the two that we have.

Peter (CA)   October 19th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

If you like....I'm pretty sure what you are saying has some racism in it. Powell clearly outlined why he endorsed Obama, what he has been observing, what he has listened to, etc.

He is concerned with McCain's JUDGMENT, particularly his choice of a completely inappropriate running mate.

I know you right wingers can't stand the thought of losing the Presidency, but get used to it.

Predictable endorsement   October 19th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

All along the McCain campaign has talked about judgement and experience....then he goes out and chooses a dreadfully unqualified governor with no experience, who has consistantly showed bad judgement and is ethically challenged. Everyone knew Powell was going to likely endorse Obama, yet from the tepid reaction this morning it is obvious they have no plan or cohesive response. It is an iconic example of this ineffective campaign run by a candidate showing an inability to lead. Powell just articulated what a vast majority in this country feel....adios McCain...you will soon be a mere footnote in history, and Palin will return to Alaska to face criminal charges.

Tom - CA   October 19th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

"Nobody will say it, but you can't tell me this is not another prominent black endorsing a fellow black candidate."

Actually, I CAN tell you. You are 100% wrong. And, yes, what you said embodies the definition of a racist. To say the Gen. Powell endorsed Obama only because the color of his skin shows how little respect you have for a General Powell and exemplifies how unbecoming ignorance truly is.

nancy   October 19th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

It does not make sense that Former Secretary of State Colin Powell endosed Senator Barack Obama. Powell is not only a Republican as he stated, but in his endorsement this morning he said he thought perhaps the surge in Iraq should have been initiated sooner. How does this at all go along at all with what Senator Obama has stated on the war. Sounds a bit irratic.

Wanderer   October 19th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

Obama asked Powell for advice, Obama is Dem, and Powell is Rep. McCain’s last word at the end of the last debate was ‘Humble’, but I have not heard either McCain or Palin asked anyone from the Dem party for advice.

Is McCain ‘Humble”?

Despites of numerous comments from people of America around the country and even from his own party about his negative campaigns McCain continues to go with negative campaigns and lately with the ‘Automated’ calls attempting to brand Obama a terrorist.

What kind of character is McCain?

McCain picked Sarah Palin for VP.

Does he really have good judgment as he claimed he is?

McCain is experienced. It is true based on the number of years he has been in politics, but has he ever been a president? How may presidents in the past had experiences as presidents before they were elected presidents? Do McCain’s experiences guarantee he will be a good president?

Why did McCain/Palin have to use Joe the Plumber to show the America people their own interpretation about Obama’s tax plans?

I have still not had the clear answers for these questions.

To all independent voters, please think about these questions before deciding for whom you will vote.

YES WE WILL - TEXAS   October 19th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

I'm a Republican voting for Barack Obama tomorrow. I believe he and Joe,"the Senator" has the judgement, experience, moral values, integrity and leadership abilities to turn this country around for the American People.

Collin Powell thought Bill Clinton was a qualified Commander in Chief but the Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, and Sailors like myself who did not have to play politics like the Generals and Admirals, felt slapped in the face in the face by having a draft dodger in the White House. Obama does not have being a draft dodger against him but being to the far left of his party in his actions makes people who have worn the uniform of the nation question wheteher he will put the troops quality of life and readiness over his social/welfare policies. Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter did not put the Troops first.

The most interesting thing that stood out in Meet the Press interview was McCain's choice of Sarah Palin. Even Gen. He has lost the respect of millions of Americans who put their country first.

We have political parties in this nation. However, our vote is our own. We must vote our conscience, not party. Powell has shown that the needs of the country trumps party. This man had a great shot at being president. As a democrat I could have voted for him because of the caliber and capability of the man. Strict adhearance to a party line isn't necessarily in the best interest of one's party or nation.

Powell has chosen Obama for those same reasons. Obama is the president we need in the context of this time in our nation's history. Thank you Gen, Powell.

Susan   October 19th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

I respect that Powell can endorse whomever he pleases. However, one remark he made to back up his criticism of the "tone" of McCain's campaign doesn't seem fair and just to me. Powell says it is not enough for McCain to deny that Obama is a Muslim and state that he is a Christian. McCain, according to Powell, should have gone one step further and stated that there is nothing wrong with being a Muslim.
I think it is most telling that Senator Obama himself has not come out and said emphatically and frequently that "there is nothing wrong with being Muslim".

Dave   October 19th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

Quite interesting ...... A retired and decorated military general who happens to be a registered republican sees Obama being more capable of defending our nation and able to bring forth fresh ideas to steer us in a better direction. Meanwhile Mr. McCain is toting a plumber around the country and he unleashed a disgracefully under-qualified VP who would destroy the foundations of this nation if she were to become president.

It's clear that McCain is incapable of rendering sound decisions that would benefit this nation. I admire McCain for his dedicated service to this nation both through his honorable military and senate activities. But it's time for him to step aside and allow Obama/Biden to repair the damage caused by the current administration. McCain clearly is not up to this task.

Frankly I have been frightened about the McCain-Pallen rhetoric regarding whom Obama has been "palling around with", the odd thing it made me more frightened about the Republicans as it brought memories of Sen. MccCarthy and his communist witch hunts. No one can ever doubt the integrity and honesty of General Powell who has always puts his country first! It is obvious that, if there was one iota of truth out of the "McPalenism" regarding Obama's character, the General would never have endorsed him. The Republicans have acted despicable with personal attacks instead of attacking the issues. This Republican is also voting for Obama, someone that I feel has shown integrity, good judgement and restraint during this contentious campaign.

He reluctantly endorsed Barack because he knows McCain will be more of the same Bush tactics. America must get back up and go forward, the world is changing and America MUST change with it for the greater good of all its citizens, not just the Rich, Fat, Bloated Republicans, the Party is OVER.

Greg   October 19th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

Finally the truth spoken from the top of the ladder. They don't come more qualified and intelligent as Colin powell. I think this sealed the deal, although I Obama has it wrapped up anyway.

It would be sad to see the McCain camp go negative on Powell for speaking his mind, which meant going against his own party. Doesn't this make him a maverick? How can John McCain argue that?

Tim, Maine   October 19th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

. . . I agree with General Powell. The job of Vice- President is to be
ready to be President. The qualifications for vice President are the Same
as the qualifications for President. Sarah Palin is not qualified for
either Position.

Is this REALLY the time for her to appear on Saturday Night Live? Even
though this venue is more befitting of her?

Oh boy, Powell endorses Obama – now that's a real shocker. Is there really anyone out there that didn't see that one coming?
How are the Obama followers going to put aside Powell's role in the war during the first four years.

The reality is that Powell really likes and respects McCain, but he cannot support Pailin. She is simply not capable. Look folks, we may be Independents, Republicans, and Democrats, but we are ALL Americans first! Pailin was simply a horrible pick by John and Powell has pointed that out.

G   October 19th, 2008 12:47 pm ET

Powell words when endorsing Obama says it all. Thanks for not putting politics over reason. You were a good general who was misled by the Bush administration regarding the Iraq war. And if Obama is lucky enough to win maybe you will serve in another adminstration.

Simon   October 19th, 2008 12:47 pm ET

Collin Powell endorsed Barack Obama not because of his principles or judgment of Obama's capability but by his race. But I think Americans are mostly white which will decide this race.

Chuck   October 19th, 2008 12:47 pm ET

The international opinion of the U.S. is in no small part Powell's fault. He was at the forefront on the push to invade Iraq...

Republican   October 19th, 2008 12:46 pm ET

I trust Colin Powell's judgement. The deciding factor was the most telling. John McCain campaign as well as his VP pick speak directly the lack of McCain's judgement and therefore disqualify him for the Presidency. My vote will follow Mr Powell's and go for Obama/Biden.

Cindy in Atlanta   October 19th, 2008 12:46 pm ET

This is a huge endorsement from my perspective. His criticsm of the Palin pick echos the sentiments of all the "major" newspapers that also endorsed Obama this weekend. I was also glad that he emphasized the "negative" tone of the McCain campaign as to why he decided to support Obama.

But they continue with the negative attacks....don't they get it? I hope they will read or listen to Powell's entire endorsement and perhaps decided to start talking about real issues....but it just might be too late at this point.

I would have been rather it have been Colin Powell running than Obama.
I don't put too much into it. Why should he go against the grain and subject himself to ridicule from the black community at this point when Obama is ahead in the polls.. If he would have done it months ago, I would put more credibility into it.

Albert Ware, Jr.   October 19th, 2008 12:45 pm ET

How could any intelligent person not endorse Barack Obama. John McCain is tearing this country apart with fear and hate, on purpose, so he can be President. We may never heal after what he and Palin are doing. Now Republicans are purging voters from lists nationwide. I don't even recognize America anymore.

Larry, Hazleton, Pa   October 19th, 2008 12:42 pm ET

Thank you General Powell this could not have come at a more important time in our nations history. We now could have the best chance of regaining the the ideals of our founding fathers.

Linda   October 19th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

Powell was misled by one Republican presidential team. I do not think he wants to see this happen again. McCain/Palin have characteristics so similar to Bush/Cheney – a disregard for taking advantage of the great thinkers in this country in order to promote an agenda that never had a mandate. McCain/Palin, like Bush/Chaney, is simply dangerous and promises to lead this country in the current path.

Tom Hedick   October 19th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

I was surprised at Colin Powell’s endorsement of Obama, I thought more of him and thought we shared the same values about life and our love of America. Needless to say I have lost my entire respect for Colin Powell. What a slap in our troops face, Obama is dangerous and reckless and Powell knows it but because the Bush administration hung him out to dry this is his way of paying them back. The man has totally turned his back on his country. I hope history judges him harshly!!

As usually, Powell provides a voice of reason and sanity. Unfortunately, every right-wing site I've seen has been inundated by posters calling him anti-American, a traitor, and a racist. It saddens me greatly that a national hero is subjected to this type of ridiculous treatment, but I hope that on November 4th, the vast majority of Americans will prove that they are above this sort of pettiness.

up   October 19th, 2008 12:40 pm ET

Finally, a courageous, sane voice! Thank you, thank you, thank you, Gen. Colin Powell! I feel safer in the US, today! There are still people in powerful positions in the US who feel the good of this nation is more important than party affliations! I am too a republican supporting Barack Obama for the EXACT same reasons you spoke, General Colin Powell! Thank you finally for voicing my concerns. This is the UNITED states, NOT the DIVIDED states!!!

kau   October 19th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

America it is time we decide.

Republicans in Favor of Dems.   October 19th, 2008 12:38 pm ET

Now there you have it. A one time avid support of Bush is now seeing the light. Supporting reason and sound judgement instead of the eratic judgement of John Mccain. I too as a republican is joining Gen. Colin Powell. That is putting country first over politics.

No2RepubGimmicks   October 19th, 2008 12:38 pm ET

It's not just that Mr. Powell endorsed Obama...

I think EVERYONE (including McCain supporters) should watch and listen to Mr. Powell's ENTIRE statement on why he is voting for Obama...

It really, really puts things into perspective.

I like John McCain a lot too, and have lots of repsect for him. I even supported him in 2000... but, he's now surrounded by some very ugly people who are willing to do and say anything to win.

Charles   October 19th, 2008 12:37 pm ET

I respect Gen. Powell so much.He is one of the statesmen who can tell the truth without being partisan. His endorsement has just turned my wife to Sen.Obama.A lot of people respect and trust this man.

Rob   October 19th, 2008 12:37 pm ET

Terrific. It is always great when government officials endorse each other as it really adds to credibility. I mean, who else is better qualified, to tell us who is qualified other than someone from the government? I admire Collin Powell, but this so called endorsement probably comes with a position in the new cabinet. Perhaps Defense Secretary?
I have nothing bad to say about Powell, but "change" is the vehicle upon which Obama is running and all I see is more of the same.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

I watched the interview this morning and I agree with Mr. Powell. John McCain has become a man who's only goal is winning. I'm sure McCain does not want to lose a second time; however, he's playing to peoples unfounded fears and he is not bringing America together. McCains is further tearing America part just because he wants to win. This is not "Country First" It's win first.

Four star General and worthy Patriot General Colin Powell?

All I can say is Yes sir, General Powell.

chippyarm   October 19th, 2008 12:35 pm ET

It intrigues me how because Colin Powell , a man of color, endorses Obama that he is doing so because of color. Colin Powell was, and is, a man who has served his country well. Perhaps the idea of color has many Republicans angry and crying racism because they have in fact played their hidden agenda for so many years. If Powell endorsed McCain, would you be complaining. Answer that honestly. The truth will guide you.

Shawn   October 19th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

I am a huge Barack Obama supporter. However, I am not a Democrat, nor Repub, nor Ind. I am someone who picks my candidate bases on their stands on issues. Colin Powell is the one & only person that I ever had respect for out of the worst administration ever. He loves this country, and makes all his decisions based on the good of the country, hence, he left the Bush administration. Anyone who has any love for their country or integrity would. So to have one of the most respected voice in Washington on board the Obama movement speaks volumes on "Who Barack Obama Is." He doesnt endorse based on party, as a lot of other Repub politicians whom endorsed Barack do either. This should be all America has to know come Nov. 4. Our country is at stake. Barack will have Repubs in his administration for bi-partisan leadership. He is the change we need. Right Colin? Thank you. Now let's get Barack Obama in office and get our country back from rich, corrupt businessmen, Bush, Cheney, McCain, etc. Its up to us Nov 4.

voter   October 19th, 2008 12:29 pm ET

this is huge for those in the military community. Also, Powell made a good point that the republicans are not inclusive. they are alienating the moderate republicans because the republican party as a whole sold out to the evangelicals. this makes moderate republicans uncomfortable. if they don't feel that their party has a place for them, Powell may have planted the seed of considering voting Obama because he is inclusive.

francheska ;-)   October 19th, 2008 12:29 pm ET

The end of the GOP   October 19th, 2008 12:28 pm ET

Colin Powell said it better than anyone could. The GOP is falling apart, not because of Johnr Mccain, but because of its platform. Americans are finally realizing the depth to which the GOP has harmed this nation. We have fallen behind at almost every level. Education in math and science, broad band access, healthcare quality and affordability, technological advances, the climate crisis... and especially alternative energy development.

Remember that it was Ronald Reagan, their patron saint, who cancelled tax breaks for alternative energy development. Now the chickens come home to roost, and what is the GOP mantra? “Drill Baby Drill.” This is preposterous to any thinking person, and on November 4th, the Republicans will lose not only the White house, but Congresional seats, governorships and court appointments. FINALLY, enough people are OUTRAGED, and the chorus throughout the land will be:

THROW THE BUMS OUT.

An America you can believe in   October 19th, 2008 12:28 pm ET

Mr. Powell's appearance on Meet the Press should be viewed by the whole world. His statements were delivered with great thought and a straight forward look at both candidates. Mr. Powell did not make this decision lightly and neither should the rest of America. You really should look at who is going to be the better President and you can only come to one conclusion and that is President Obama.

gerry   October 19th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

The Collin Powell endorsement solidifies Obama's experience and national security credientials as President.

Saif   October 19th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

It's sad. The McCain camp is going to have to discredit a significant member of their own party.

But this is exactly what makes Powell respected... he speaks his mind. Which is ironic because he rose to his highest under an administration that was Draconian in quelling any signs of differing opinions. Cheney, Rumsfeld and their bureaucratic minions almost stiflied Powell to death at the State Department.

Alas, the realities of party patronage will probably never make this happen... but could you just imagine a likeness of diplomatic and foreign policy juggernauts like Biden, Powell, Armitage and other realists representing expertise and views from a wide range of opinions sitting at the principals table advising an intellectually astute and studious president like Obama?

One can dream.

As a Registered Republican, I am totally with General Colin Powell, in his endorsement of Sen. Obama. Sen. McCain's choice of Palin as VP was a reaction to Obama not pickin Hillary, and it was a bad choice as you will see on Nov. 4. Palin has gone to extremes in her talks of Obama and people are simply disgusted. Though i like MCain. i feel he should have run for President some 20 years ago and he is too old. "Obama lead at 6", minus the 2-6 point Bradley effect, and the normal closing of the gap at the end of the campaign, and we have an Electoral College squeaker. Powell's imprimatur won't change this by more than a point or two.

This is a significant endorsement. As a republican it seems like one more nail in McCain's campaign coffin, as it were.

I have always had a high regard for Powell, and no one can argue that his experience in the Middle East situation is second to none. That he has come out in criticism of McCain and Bush is noteworthy.

This endorsement definately adds a point or two in my mind for Obama. I am still on the fence, but perhaps there is a tilt at the moment towards the blue...

Listening to Colin Powell this morning, I could not help but admire the man to come to, for what must have been to him, a very difficult decision. Many of the points he brought up, things he was not comfortable about that are happening in this campaign, were the very same things that I saw happening. My admiration for John McCain has really declined during this period. His choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate is becoming more and more scary each day. She has really stoked the fires to racially divide the country even more, whereas Obama is trying his best to bring the people together.

Another thing I have noticed is how McCain has seized upon, and is now promoting, many of the things that Obama was talking about from the beginning, e.g., Obama started to talk about change from the very beginning, so when McCain saw how well it was working for him, he decided to take it up too. I can't remember McCain talking about education until, again, he saw how well it was working for Obama. He really doesn't seem to be able to identify exactly what is needed for the American people.

How can he hire someone to help run his campaign, someone who just about villified him when he was running against Bush. That man has certainly brought his nastiness to the McCain campaign.

People, open your eyes and listen to what is being said by both candidates, then check out "Fact Check" and "Truth Squad", try to make an intelligent decision.

Powell's endorsement confirms what I have said all along. If Obama was not black, Hillary would be the person campaigning for President of the U.S.

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   October 19th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

I think that this should seal the deal for some people. Powell has great insight into what is going on. Some of the few comments I saw on Meet the Press weren't surprising, but says alot coming from Powell. I hope that more people will take what he said, not just the endorsement, to heart. It is the examples that Powell used that are important. As my dad says from time to time, sometimes you need more than just a yes or no answer to the question.

Tubby The Tuba   October 19th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

Here is a man I respect and think is honorable. I think the Republicans think that he is backing Barrack because of race, but he isn't. He has the leadership, and honor that few in the Republican party are blessed with. He may be the only honest member it has. Thanks Mr. Powell for you correcting the Republican party nasty negative campaign.

David   October 19th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

This is a great turn of events. Colin Powell's endorsement of Obama should ally the fears of many Americas that Obama is a socialist, a far leftist, or what ever slanderous comments will come from McCain over the next few weeks.

Hpecgh08   October 19th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

Great news!!

Obama's Cabinet is definitely shaping up. General Clark as Secretary of Defense and Colin as Secretary of State. Colin I think would love to do what he never got to do while he was Secretary of State.

Powell's "defection" from the Republican party is a reflection of what is going on all over the country. More and more this party is being linked to dogma that favors those who have wealth at the expense of ordinary everyday citizens.
McCain is not the problem, the Republican party with the extreme right demanding their voice be paramount, is the problem.
And, our President, a man of very limited intelligence and less good judgment, is leading this effort.

I hope the American people take a moment to listen or read why Colin Powell is endorsing Senator Obama. Mr. Powell summed it up correctly. Obama is full of hope, he is change. He is the future, not the past. Obama has been negative on McCain's policies. He has not attacked McCain or Palin personally.
After listening to John McCain this morning on Fox News Sunday it is clear to me that he is not living in reality. He continues to be negative all the while denying it. He continues to distort what Obama says. He continues to try and dumb down America and seems to be clinging to the past. He continues to use fear and smear. He continues to vilify Democrats and be divisive. After all of this I don't see how McCain will be able to unify the country. He is doing the same thing President Bush has done for the past 7.5 years.

Waitaseccond   October 19th, 2008 11:09 am ET

I deeply respect Colin Powell and his unbiased explaination of why he preferred Barack Obama over John Mccain to be president of the United States. I know republicans will spin this to a Black and White polarizing reason for this decision, but Colin Powell gave thoughtful, intelligent and very persuasive reasons for his decision. It is the fault of the republican party and John Mccain's negative strategy and undertones of racism that in pursuing the presidency, that probably caused Colin Powell's break with his party more than his African American Heritage. America and the world is ready for an Barack Obama presidency!

Pleased to see Powell's endorsement. I am sure the McCain camp will claim he is not "pro American" and not a "real American" becase he endorses Obama.

Lisa from PA   October 19th, 2008 10:43 am ET

I think this says it all- a former secretary of state, a retired general, and a well respected Republican endorses Barack Obama because he feels the country is headed in the wrong direction. I just pray the American people listen to this intelligent man, who knows very well the failures of the type of policies McCain suppports.

US General, US Secretary of State, Republican . . . . and powerful long time figure of this government – believes Palin is a mistake, that linking Obama to Ayers is only a political game . . . McCain is too negative and has changed far to the right of himself -and that Obama would do a fine job. Not suprised at all, it' truth! Thank you Mr. Powell.

twiddly   October 19th, 2008 10:36 am ET

Thank you, Colin Powell. More republicans need to acknowledge that Sarah Palin is in no way qualified to be vice president, much less president.

Her selection by McCain is indicative of 'gut' decision-making, and of playing to perceived political winds, trying to win points from women and evangelicals.

Palin is clearly not the best the republican party had to offer, and this political 'gimmick' will prove to be the downfall of his campaign.

jim   October 19th, 2008 10:35 am ET

It is the tale of the two candidates. Obama has the endorsement of Colin Powell and McCain has Joe the unlicensed plumber.

Winnie Hussein.... in Montana   October 19th, 2008 10:35 am ET

Thank you, Gen. Powell, for your very careful, very thoughtful decision of who to endorse this year. Your intelligence and character have always impressed me and I am so thankful for your endorsement of the candidate I believe will be best for this nation. Thank you to Christopher Buckley, as well. He is incredibly talented and well educated and his endorsement indicates that a conservative can think for himself.

And with the nail into McCain's coffin, Obama wins the election.

Trysh in Los Angeles   October 19th, 2008 10:35 am ET

An intelligent choice from an intelligent man. Now watch all of the hateful Republicans to come in and say its only because he is Black. They love Colin Powell when he is was on "their side", but now they will minimalize his opinion and their respect for him because the man he supports happens to be the same race as he is....just like the man they support is the same race as they are.

No Longer Amused, Las Vegas   October 19th, 2008 10:34 am ET

Thank you General Powell.

That was a well-thought out, succinct and respectful analysis of the situation.

That decision must have been hard for you, but you put the country first as you always have.

I haven't always agreed with you but I have always repected you. You once more showed me that you are a true American.

I especially appreciated you bringing up that we are a country of many religions and they are all welcome.

I am a Christian myself, but I don't think that we have addressed how much the 'accusation' of Obama being a Muslim is not just inaccurate, but more importantly, it is unAmerican that we should consider there to be anything wrong with it. My country welcomes freedom of worship.

God bless you.

proudamerican   October 19th, 2008 10:34 am ET

This comes as a very welcomed surprise. Colin represents the moderate American. His service to his country as well as his wisdom in knowing when to call it "quits" with W really makes him a fantastic supporter. Also, the fact that he is a Republican and has known McCain longer than Obama makes this move an interesting one...

Grace Needed   October 19th, 2008 10:33 am ET

This endorsement I just watched on Meet the Press was sincere and sensitive to his own party, as well as sensible at this time in the Presidential campaign. This was Colin Powell at his best discussing the best in the candidates and how they have failed to make use of their best – advice, resources, etc. He knows it takes more than being a war hero to lead a country through war to find peace and he knows it takes more than a fighter to bring our country out of this current economic mess. I agree with his endorsement and would endorse him for any position in President Obama's administration.

James From Chicago   October 19th, 2008 10:33 am ET

Mike H.   October 19th, 2008 10:29 am ET

Powell's endorsement of Obama won't influence my support for McCain. Powell was a solid general but a weak Secretary of State who was just as responsible as Bush and Rumsfeld for getting us into Iraq.

Steve C.   October 19th, 2008 10:28 am ET

When I read the headline I lost all my respect for General Powell. He was the JCS when I when in the Gulf War in 1990 & 1991. He should know his candidate has no experience whatsoever regarding the military and foreign affairs. This should have immediately set off alarm bells. Also his candidate has vigorously criticized this administration for getting into Iraq to begin with. Remember people, Mr. Powell, was President Bush's main spokesman for the U.S. in the U.N. chamber for this war. I see him as being colorblind to the issues and the candidate. Mr. Powell should know better, that talk does not make you a great leader, only proven action does. Mr. Obama has none of this. Zip!! I didn't know Mr. Powell needed money so badly to be bought in this way.

josh henderson   October 19th, 2008 10:28 am ET

Let the hate comments begin from the repub's. I just got a call from a friend who was on the fence between the two candidates and she stated that Powell has made up her mind and is voting for Obama!! Her husband is voting for Mccain. This is a man that loves Colin Powell but know is saying that he "never liked him". I mean wake up people this is a serious election and serious times in our country we need a good man to get us out of this and that man is Obama. Powell sees this and is doing what is best for the country. I know some folks will say because Powell is black that he endorsed Obama that is not true. He endorsed him for the reasons he stated!

Let's unite and do what we know is best for the country and vote for Obama. Early voting starts in Texas tomorrow and I am casting my vote early. Get out and vote people it's too important. We need to say to the repub's not this time, not anymore!!!

Colin Powell, unlike John McCain, is an authentic American hero; one who rightly deserves the respect of his fellow Americans. The fact that he served a Republican administration speaks volumes to the importance of this endorsement.
When even his fellow Republicans, especially those in positions of power, don't trust John McCain to run the country, then why should we ?

Colin Powell is fabulous!   October 19th, 2008 10:24 am ET

I am thrilled at Colin Powell's decision to endorse Barack. I watched Meet The Press and he gave a very insightful, deep explanation why.
Some will say it is because of his race, I believe it is because Barack appeals to our better angels, our desire to be better, to aspire to a better place and to have a leader with intelligence, a steady hand and the wisdom to call on people such as Powell for his service. I pray Powell would accept a cabinet position in the Obama campaign. In short I am thrilled!

I really liked what he said about the Muslim Issue....Colin pointed out that there are muslim Americans who have given themselves to their country and even died in the Iraq war but the rest of the "Christians" are so busy condemning people who practice Islam. I am a Christian and it has bothered me for a long time to see many so called "Christians" give the suggestion that there is something wrong with people who do not believe what we believe. If that was the case, Jesus would never had died for us and how will they know the truth if we do not show Love? Only Love can bring people to christ...not trying to make them feel like there is something wrong with them.

Powell is following the unfortunate trend among African Americans to blindly endorse a candidate based on race. Obama's views of the military are polar opposite of Powell's. It say something about what racism really is when appr 40% of whites support Obama and 95+% of blacks support him.

I hope that means Powell will get a cabinet position in an Obama White House. This is a real respected man and I think this endorsement will carry weight with independents and undecided voters.

Rich Bolen   October 19th, 2008 10:12 am ET

Colin Powell chooses race over national security. Colin Powell has endorsed Obama, an individual with which he has almost nothing in common particularly in regard to national security. Almost all of the ridicule Obama levels at McCain in regard to the war in Iraq he could equally direct to Powell. It appears that the primary commonality between Powell and Obama is that both are children of mixed marriages. It may also be a personal grudge against McCain for not choosing Powell as VP. Has Powell ever been a real Republican?

Dave from MD   October 19th, 2008 10:12 am ET

Alice Newman Center Harbor NH   October 19th, 2008 10:11 am ET

Powell articulated, better than I ever could, why I am voting for Obama.

It was a thoughtful, rational discussion of why Powell was voting for Obama, not telling everyone who they should vote for.

James   October 19th, 2008 10:11 am ET

Smart man, smart man!

Joel   October 19th, 2008 10:11 am ET

THIS IS HUGE. Colin Powell is a well respected National Security personnel in the Republican Party.

His reasons for the endorsement speaks to the character of Obama and the remarkable campaign that he has been running.

Kudos t you Colin Powell.

So much for McCain acting like he has the military vote. Never in history as so many people from the other side endorse a candidate. Wake up people, we need someone who can move forward.

cubscoutmom   October 19th, 2008 10:08 am ET

I think this is good news for the Obama camp.

Mike in Toronto   October 19th, 2008 10:08 am ET

I'm not sure this endorsement will translate into any real votes for Obama, but symbolically at least it is significant. Powell is a respected hero of the first Gulf War and painfully personally experienced the hysteria coming out of the Oval Office in the lead-up to the War in Iraq. I think many independents consider Powell a consummate professional, a rational, fair, man of integrity, so his endorsement may resonate with independents.

MLH   October 19th, 2008 10:08 am ET

Thank you Gen. Powell. You waited long enough that your endorsement should be given some weight – you watched the behavior in the primaries and the election, and had a chance to carefully weigh each candidate's words against their behavior and their ability to lead their campaign.

Anonymous   October 19th, 2008 10:08 am ET

It does not suprise me.. It is obvoius that Colin Powell a Rebuplican, would be endorsing Obama.

This race unfortanely has clearly not been based on a person's character ,honesty or track record, but rather on rhetoric ..and of course, the color of one's skin.

It is an unfortunate time for our country.

Let us focus on the fact that we are all Americans & let's be thankful for that!!! The world is looking at us for leadership, please let us not focus on race & negativity, but close your eyes on focus on the character & words of each candidate & ask yourself, who would be the BEST candidate to lead the Free World & improve our Global image at this critical period in our nation's history.

I was not surprise at Powell endorsing Obama, 99% of all blacks are supporting Obama weather he is experience or not. Powell mention experience neither Obama or Palin have experience to run this country.

Black Republican turn Obama supporter- New York, New York   October 19th, 2008 10:07 am ET

Colin Powell is regarded highly all across America, even among whites, so when he comes out in support of Obama – not because they are both black – makes me stop and reconsider my support for John McCain. I already had doubts about McCain's choice of Sarah Palin and the campaign's turn south on a negative drive to win when the campaign should have been dishing up ideas!

If a President Obama becomes incapicitated while in office, I trust Biden to take over and do a good job!

If a President McCain becomes incapicitated while in office, I cannot trust Palin to take over and do a good job!

Even if Powell came out in support of Obama, McCain still would have had my support and vote had he chosen Mitt Romney as his VP!

spiculari   October 19th, 2008 10:07 am ET

Thank you Mr.Powell...

Independent   October 19th, 2008 10:07 am ET

This is a man of incredible stature & respect worldwide. A man w/ the type of respect that crosses party lines, so this is a big deal for the Obama campaign and a big blow to the McCain campaign.

Corey Miller   October 19th, 2008 10:06 am ET

The most influencial african american politician of our time just picked up the most influential endorsement of his campaign. Retired General Colin Powell would be anyone's choice, Republican or Democrat, if he were running today. Thank you Gen Powell for seeing in Barack Obama what many of us see in him, a president.

As a Canadian watching your election, I think Colin Powell's endorsement is HUGE!!!
He is highly respected around the world.
He eloquently spoke of his reasons of choosing Obama, that clearly shows that he really thought about his choice. He gave clear, consice reasons for his decisiion.

I had to look at the calendar, cuz it sure feels like Christmas.

Emmanuel   October 19th, 2008 10:05 am ET

This is good for American Democracy that a former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell endorsed Barack Obama. This has come at the right time. Especially his message -"Obama displayed a steadiness. Showed intellectual vigor. He has a definitive way of doing business that will do us well," Thanks Powell.

Dennis   October 19th, 2008 10:05 am ET

Mr. Colin Powell says it as it is. Obama and Biden are ready to lead.

Joan   October 19th, 2008 10:05 am ET

This has locked in the victory that was already locked. It will be hard for conservatives to continue to downplay Obama's strength. Other conservatives have endorsed him recently, but this endorsement is powerful. A confidant of both Bushes, a 4 star General who served in the one war in Iraq the whole country and world supported. For him to support the Democratic nominee took some serious soul searching, and all the GOP can do is smear him.

KLEE   October 19th, 2008 10:05 am ET

Hooray! I had been disappointed when Colin Powell refused to run himself, because I respect him so much. His endorsement is very important, because it is not "politics", but is an intelligent choice for intelligent, well thought out reasons. He has the knowledge and experience to back it up, too.

Eric   October 19th, 2008 10:04 am ET

McCain, someone forgot to tell you the race is over.

I thought it should have came earlier, but nevertheless it's a good endorsement at this time. I don't know the effectivenes but, if Obama gets a 2-4 point spread with this endorsement, it would be even greater. Colin Powell was screwed by the Bush Administration he also stated he's still a republican but I think he see's the light at the end of the tunnel.

BROOKLYN   October 19th, 2008 10:04 am ET

Surprise!!!!

Please... And his opinion matters because? Last time I checked, nobody liked him, now they will.

McCain has the endorsement of four former Secretaries of State and two hundred former Generals.

Hummmm.

Beth   October 19th, 2008 10:03 am ET

I like and respect Colin Powell very much, and he got screwed over by the Bush administration. I knew he'd endorse Obama...and I would bet there is a place for Powell in Obama's administration.

Obama/Biden '08

Eric   October 19th, 2008 10:03 am ET

It is not as much the fact that he endorsed him, it is the rational he gave for doing so. For the negative campaign, for McCain unwillingness to stop it (or lack of leadership), Palin, lack of issues, divisiveness, lack of understang of the economics, and so on.

I really do hope that McCain, starting today, will finish his campaign on a positive note and will make sure, by doing so, to give Obama a clear mandate to tackle the issues, instead of just increasing the divisiveness. That's what the country needs. Anything else and McCain whole career will be tainted by the smears his campaign represent.

emily   October 19th, 2008 10:03 am ET

What a great endorsement! I am so proud of Barack and his campaign.

Middle-Aged White Lady   October 19th, 2008 10:01 am ET

I am ecstatic about Powell's endorsement. And it was made for the right reasons – Obama will change, will heal our relationship with the rest of the world. That IS important – we must regain our status as "the last best hope" – which has been so badly damaged over the past eight years.
I am also glad he specified the selection of Palin as what turned him away from McCain. That was a foolish, politically-motivated decision on the part of the McCain campaign that may very well come to haunt them after the election.

Steve   October 19th, 2008 10:01 am ET

I never thought Powell would play the race card. It's a good example of blacks banning together to get a black man elected president. It just goes to show that skin color is what this democratic party is all about.

Good choice General Powell! I too have voted for candidates in both major parties and I too have come to the conclusion that Obama is the intellectual and inclusive President that we need in America! I trust his judgement in foreign policy and economics way – something I can't say for the other ticket! Thank God we still have rational people who take the direction of our country seriously! Wow! Here in Canada we are estatic! This endorsement speaks volumes and we feel as if there is real change around the bend, not just for Americans, but then ultimately the World. We hope and pray that Americans reject the divisive and fear-evoking politics of the McCain campaign, and it's shameful and disgraceful pick of VP candidate Sarah Palin! Barack Obama and Joe Biden display the upstanding characteristics, judgement and experience that will change your Country for the better and ultimately the World and we can't wait...Obama/Biden on November 4th!! We wait with hope...

Vic   October 19th, 2008 9:56 am ET

Why is this NOT a surprise. Now Colin Powell can count another instance of his betraying a commitment.

Florida Voter   October 19th, 2008 9:56 am ET

I wonder how the McCain Camp will "spin" this endorsement.

Sue   October 19th, 2008 9:56 am ET

It is great to see that even Republicans can see the difference between Obama/Biden and McCain/Palin, I know many (racists) will say it is Black for Black, but real people, real Democrats and Repulicans that really care about what direction this country is going in, and how to handle this economy and not about personal attacks, there has to be someone that cares about American and the people and McCain has not shown that in the last couple months, it's more about negative campaigning and trying to win a vote any way he can get it except dealing with the issues.

Charlie   October 19th, 2008 9:53 am ET

This is great news, now we have to make sure that we vote. Wouldn't it be nice if both candidates got rid of the personal attack adds and instead encouraged everyone to vote. That would really be putting the country first. Senator McCain needs to consider the impact of character attacks on the next President of the United States. Senator Obama's has my vote because he has been working toward unity. Recent responses to desperate attacks have been necessary, but not the most pleasant.

Mr. Powell, thank you so much for proving the point I've been making for so long during this election: Race trumps all when it comes to the blacks supporting Nobama during this Presidential Election.

DJ   October 19th, 2008 9:51 am ET

This is fantastic news for the Obama ticket. Not that I necessarily agree with Sec. Powell's judgement as regards most things (he did back Bush after all), but I'm glad to see this stalwart republican backing the only candidate that makes sense in the given set of circumstances surrounding this election season.

Olegringo, NM   October 19th, 2008 9:51 am ET

Powell, unlike some of us did'nt really have a choice.

Jackie   October 19th, 2008 9:51 am ET

Secretary Powell echoes my own thoughts,,,,,,the choice of vp is large and Senator Obama chose well...I believe both presidential candidates are good men.........Senator McCain who I would have gladly voted for 10 years ago has, because of his age and belief that this is his last chance, sold his soul to the RNC.......a number of us, in the last two elections, have done the same- and look at what it has gotten us.... Its time for a new direction..

Joe Regis   October 19th, 2008 9:51 am ET

Powell can now be forgiven for the deception of the Iraq war. It is clear that he was mislead as well as the rest of the nation and the world into supporting a misguided war of opportunity waging in part by soldiers of fortune.

Congratulation General!

It looks like McCain looses. Powell decision to choose Obama was not much of a shock to alot of Obama supporters. When you spew hatred in America you will loose! Dirty politics makes dirty politicians. He does not like McCains pick for VP, as for me I trust in Obama's pick in VP Joe Biden, He is perfect!
I am listening to Powell right now, he speaks the truth about McCain, Hearing about Non-Americans in the Government, welcome back Joe McCarthy. McCain/Palin is trying to bring back that back. What scares me the most is that she is a heartbeat away from the Presidency? Well if you are a Democrat you are Anti-Americans, if you are a liberal you are a non-American. Remember that her endorsement for the Govenor of Alaska was AIP? So that makes her a non American As I listen to both Parties in their Campaign, McCain and his puppet, Palin are trying to split people up, and Goddess help us! Please vote in November and vote with your heart, not with fear.
GoBama and Biden and Bless America for this great American!

Anyone who believes Powell endorsed Obama because of a shared racial heritage doesn't know much about Powell. This is an endorsement by a thoughtful, extraordinarily intelligent person who sees beyond the rhetoric to the true quality of Obama, and who sees beyond his friendship with John McCain to his atrocious decision-making and willingness to risk the country to put Sarah Palin a heartbeat from the presidency.

Darrell Burks   October 19th, 2008 9:47 am ET

Powell – Again shows that he is smart and has good judgement. He has endorsed the right man. He sees Republicans so divisive and unable to lead. Go Obama!!!

scott   October 19th, 2008 9:47 am ET

race factor

Mrs. Independent   October 19th, 2008 9:47 am ET

I am very impressed with this endorsement, he has now solidified my vote for Barack Obama.

Enlightened Voter   October 19th, 2008 9:46 am ET

He recognizes greatness when he sees it. I admire Powell because he had the integrity to resign after he realizes that the bush administration was corrupt. Besides no honorable person could endorse the clueless, pathologically lying ticket of mccain/palin.

Ron   October 19th, 2008 9:46 am ET

Who said there is no RACISM in this election???????????

McCain/Palin 2008

over-it   October 19th, 2008 9:46 am ET

Well of course he endorses him. They're the same race. Blacks are more racist than whites, but they never get called out on it. Actually kind of sad. I have always admired Mr. Powell. (not anymore)

scott   October 19th, 2008 9:46 am ET

phony that's all i have to say

carolo   October 19th, 2008 9:46 am ET

When Colin Powell refused to endorse John McCain, which whom he's had a 27 year friendship, THAT should tell you something.

Breck   October 19th, 2008 9:46 am ET

A nail in the coffin for the McSame campaign. Good for you General Powell, you are one of the few Republicans I still have any liking for.

Pat   October 19th, 2008 9:46 am ET

Thank you Colin Powell for your endorsement. I believe it means a great deal to this election. I also thank you for stating how disappointed you were in Senator's McCain's choice of VP due to Palin's lack of readiness for President. It seemed when we ordinary "Joe Six Packs" stated the same Republican admirers called us racist, etc. etc. Maybe now that you, a man of great Political stature and intelligence have stated the same, it may at least urge some to stop and think about what McCain's decision says about McCain and his love and concern for Country.

*******   October 19th, 2008 9:46 am ET

All the commanders need to come onboard. A great decision!!! As an Air Force member I love the decision.

Galen, ME   October 19th, 2008 9:45 am ET

I respect Colin and his wife Alma. They have served the country well. I got the feeling that Secretary Powell was not only speaking for millions of Americans, but for his grandchildren. Well done Secretary Powell, well done.

Jen B   October 19th, 2008 9:45 am ET

Powell is a military man who commands respect. Contrast that with McCain and his dishonorable campaign.

Central Scruitinizer   October 19th, 2008 9:45 am ET

WOW!!! This is a great day for OBAMA. Im going to go see him and Hillary in Orlando on Monday and I cant wait ....Hope we have a turnout like they did in ST Louis......

Anita of georgia   October 19th, 2008 9:44 am ET

I think Colin Powell endorsing Barack Obama definite speak volume in it self. I think he can see the making of a great leader for this country. A leader that America has needed for a long time. One that can bring all American together. We all see that in Barack Obama. Never in the History of this country, has I seen anyone run such a coordinated campaign and never strayed away from talking about the issues that's so troubling to American. Good call Colin Powell. To all Obama supporters--VOTE EARLY.

Joan, MD   October 19th, 2008 9:43 am ET

One of the most respected voices in America has spoken. Enough said.

This demonstrates that Barack Obama is ready and capable to be President.

Pam   October 19th, 2008 9:43 am ET

Colin Powell is an outstanding American. I was sad when he didn't run for president. After having been a part of Obama's record breaking rally in St. Louis yesterday, this news today about Colin Powell endorsing Barak Obama gives me even more hope that America will become great and proud again. YES!!!

mr powell's big fan   October 19th, 2008 9:43 am ET

thank you, mr. powell.. thank you for endorsing mr. obama..... i always admire you....

Always Blue Maryland   October 19th, 2008 9:43 am ET

This is wonderful news and I love how Powell spoke directly to the negative campaign that the McCain campaign has run. It is so harmful to our country both internally and also to our world reputation.

Ted van Tol   October 19th, 2008 9:43 am ET

Finaly! A great man who was fuled by his own secret service
and Pres. Bush on Iraq, supports Obama.
A good and wise decision, I hope he will enjoy his team on foreign politics.

BAT   October 19th, 2008 9:43 am ET

I bet you a milltion dollars that Election day, He will vote for McCain!

Thank you ever so much Mr. Powell. Barack is the uniter and will not only unite our country but the world. I could not be prouder today to be an American. After living 10 years in Europe, I am finally happy to be home and ready to travel the world again with pride!!! Thank you not only Mr. Powell but to all of us Obamamates who support Obama and the future of the USA!!! Happy days are here again!!! Almost, so don't forget to vote and let's keep working to make this the best presidency and administration straight through unti 2016 as this will not end on inauguration day, that day will only be the beginning, however the beginning of a new day for America.

Adam   October 19th, 2008 9:42 am ET

This is HUGE – I think this is the final nail in the McCain Coffin...na na na na – hey hey hey...good bye!!!

Linda32   October 19th, 2008 9:42 am ET

People are tired of the tone of the McCain's campaign. Plain and simple.

Kezi   October 19th, 2008 9:41 am ET

I know this won't get put on because my comments never do...I just want to congratulate Colin Powell for being a republican of dignity and reason, we all have been turned off by the negative tones of Senator McCain's campaign. I'm glad you and other conservative 's realized that it's way out of line. Hopefully this will be a new era in politics where out parties discuss ideas about bettering America and not whose more American and whose not!

Bob Virginia   October 19th, 2008 9:41 am ET

Powell said he questioned Sen. John McCain's judgment in picking Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate because he doesn't think she is ready to be president.

This is why Mc Cain will be unable to win this election, he had a better than even chance before selecting her as VP, What could he have beeen thinking??? He had it made with his "experience" versus Obama., then he selected Palin, such a befuddled choice he made.

blaising   October 19th, 2008 9:41 am ET

THERE'S THE LOVE!!!

Kudos to Mr. Powell...the man has a good head on his shoulders....and a HEART!!

Larry-Detroit   October 19th, 2008 9:41 am ET

who I'm I to say anything negetive about this endorsment with a stand up guy like Collin Powell.

(Former) Lifelong Republican for Obama, Columbia, TN   October 19th, 2008 9:40 am ET

I just say Powell's brief comments and he said a lot. I liked his statement about the unnecessary negativity of the McCain camp that has, in my view, erroded considerable repect for McCain, for example, I simply have no more regard for McCain. I respect his service as a military hero, but as a politician, he has shown extremely bad judgment and dishonor. Powell was right; we have so many real problems in this nation, that the last think we should be worrying about are stupid and false attacks.

Christy   October 19th, 2008 9:40 am ET

I love this endorsement and have tremendous respect for Colin Powell. However, the sad reality is that much of white America will not give it value reducing it to "a black man supporting another black man".

Obama/Biden 08

Lisa from Saugus   October 19th, 2008 9:40 am ET

It is not surprising that a black man would vote for the first black Presidential candidate.

I don't think Colin Powell is giving John McCain a fair chance!!! His problem is with George Bush not John McCain.

Lisa, Saugus, MA

pat C.   October 19th, 2008 9:40 am ET

thank you mr. powell. maybe now more people will see why obama is the right man for the job to rebuild this country. i am so worried about this wonderful nation in the way mccain and palin are trying to divide us. mccain will go down in shame and sarah palin will be known as a race baiter and the worst republican in history once this election is over.
i pray this endorcement will begin to pull us together as a body of americans and move on from all the bad and spitful ignorance that has come from the republicans and slanders on obama will stop.
i am a proud american that has voted already for barack obama because he is the one to heal us.

Good job Powell and welcome aboard. On to the promise land!

OBAMA '08   October 19th, 2008 9:37 am ET

McCain when are you going to learn??? Tell us what you're going to do, instead of trying to drive fear about Barack Obama!!! Your attempts to divide America are saddening and pitiful.

Obama/Biden 08   October 19th, 2008 9:37 am ET

Radical Ring-wing implosion in...5, 4, 3, 2....1.

So everyone get ready for the slams against Powell and it goes something like this:

No one really cares about his opinion.
How he never really was that great
He's only voting for Obama because he's black
He's a traitor
He was the one who lied about weapons, not Bush
He is irrelevant.....blah blah blah

Did I forget anything righties? I'm sure they are furiously stamping out the talking points as we speak.

gijoe31523   October 19th, 2008 9:36 am ET

Will he again be Secretary of State or the new Secretary of Degfense?

Hpotterfan77 in CT   October 19th, 2008 9:36 am ET

Thank you Mr. Powell. Welcome to the club. You have chosen to endorse a candidate that will mean real change this country can believe in. Obama/Biden '08/'12

Th3rdpwr   October 19th, 2008 9:36 am ET

Of course Obama and McCain knew about this prior to the announcement, but WAHOOO! this is great!

Glenn   October 19th, 2008 9:36 am ET

This is huge...Colin Powell is not only a Republican, but a military man. Here is a career general saying that the Bush/McCain policies toward Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, etc. are wrong.

OBAMA THE SMART CHOICE   October 19th, 2008 9:36 am ET

Welcome aboard General!

Mark, Ohio   October 19th, 2008 9:36 am ET

I just saw Powell on Meet the Press – he explained everything well.

I really respect Powell and I think he is right.

A Sousley   October 19th, 2008 9:35 am ET

This speaks loudly for Barack's wisdom and judgement. It also speaks loudly for McCain's lack thereof.

tom   October 19th, 2008 9:35 am ET

thank you mr general

T. Rothchild, A Real Virginian from the northern part   October 19th, 2008 9:35 am ET

I new it. Powell, being a four star general knows that Sarah Palin is
unqualified and a direct threat to the national security of the United
States. Yes sir, General Powell.

Democrats 08.

AMAforObama   October 19th, 2008 9:35 am ET

President Obama is going to need Powell's experienced when he moves into the white house.:-)

the Nightingale Sings in Berkley Square   October 19th, 2008 9:34 am ET

Today the Columbus Dispatch endorsed John McCain. His experience, service and sacrifice have made him more qualified to president.

Well I can see why Powell is voting for "that one.". As i recall Powell was fired from the Bush White House. I think the reason Powell is voting for Obama is because he is black and so is Obama. I think that is the sole reason. I am shocked that the blacks are solidifying behind the black candidate. Now that is racism, right?

The Republicans gave Powell his national platform and now he is spurning them. I am shocked that he has that many sour grapes. I guess his African roots are deeper than his political views and his values were for sale.

Owanemi Iyalla   October 19th, 2008 9:34 am ET

I can't say I'm surprised. Nonetheless this is good, although I don't think it will sway voters decissions.

Tim, VA   October 19th, 2008 9:34 am ET

Game is over McCain...lol

:)

Justin   October 19th, 2008 9:34 am ET

This is huge for Obama. Of all the people who served in the Bush administration, Powell is one of the few to leave it with some measure of respect from his peers and the public.

The fact that Obama can attract the vote of someone like Powell speaks volumes about his ability to unite and fix this country.

Jackson   October 19th, 2008 9:34 am ET

I'm thrilled but I know right-wingers are just going to turn it into a "black guy voting for a black guy" thing.

Letha   October 19th, 2008 9:33 am ET

Was anyone surprised by this endorsement? It was predictable, expected and all but said out loud for the last few months. I though Powell was a smart man but obviously playing follow the vombies.

anne   October 19th, 2008 9:33 am ET

Obama will make a great president. To be backing McCain at this point you have to be really insane. Our country deserves a smart president. McCain has only shown that he thinks Americans are fools.
Let's all keep working hard! We don't want haters to take over our country! They've already been in charge too long!

Obama 08!

Jimmy   October 19th, 2008 9:33 am ET

I am not surprise, any great mind in his position will take such decision that he has taken. Obama has proven to be a great mind that is capable of leading this country at this terrible time. General, again you have shown your honesty and above all your love for this country. God bless America.

Evelyn   October 19th, 2008 9:33 am ET

I really respect the thoughtful and insightful way Colin Powell went about making his decision and how he explained both the strengths and weaknesses of both candidates and how that went about making this momentous decision. Thank you for talking about the best interest of America.

(Former) Lifelong Republican for Obama, Columbia, TN   October 19th, 2008 9:33 am ET

This is great news! I have such a deep respect for Gen. Powell as he is one of the Republicans that I try to model my social and political beliefs after. I think that Gen. Powell is a true American hero and exemplifies the best of the American Dream. You know that the extremist Republicans are already trying to tarnish this endorsement. They will likely say that Powell selected Obama because he is Black or they will attempt to tarnish Powell's overall achievements. This is just how extremist right-wing Republicans work-they only have hate, division, and anger to win any election!

Loyal Repulican for 49 years voting for OBAMA   October 19th, 2008 9:33 am ET

Thank you Collin Powell, the voice of reason. You are a highly respected Repulican in so many ways. As a Republican, I am in total agreement with you on Barack Obama's intellect and ability to lead. Obama has the best interest of the hard working American in his heart.

Republicans for Obama!!!!!!!!!!!!!

McWho??   October 19th, 2008 9:33 am ET

This is good news. This goes to show that inspite of all the garbage being hauled at Obama, leaders know he is up to the task of leadership. All the McStrain/Pail-in scampaign can do is continue to attempt to drag Obama's name through the mud and stoke the fires of hatred. The rally in St.Louis yesterday shows just how ready America is for Change

Your Move   October 19th, 2008 9:33 am ET

I have always had a great respect and admiration for Gen. Powell and have veiwed him as a true example of a great man and leader. Today he stepped beyond party lines and as an American citizen who loves and has well served his country endorsed the future betterment of said country. I have no doubt that Sen. Obama and his campaign are deeply honored by not only the recognition but by the vote of confidence in his ability by Gen. Powell to help all of us turn our lives and nation around to a brighter better day.

Jon Stewart   October 19th, 2008 9:33 am ET

This is great news – a Great American endorsing another Great American. This goes to prove that hope is alive and well in America in spite of the hateful and disgraceful campaign run by McBush and Palin.

TRACI   October 19th, 2008 9:32 am ET

This is for all you people out there that went on and on about your respect for his opinions!! FOXNEWS loved him (until they heard he would be endorsing Obama). Now watch all of the hypocrites try to discredit him. It will be really entertaining to watch people imply that it is based on race, although Powell has always voted with independant leanings. Let the show begin!!

Susan from Scotts Valley, CA   October 19th, 2008 9:32 am ET

This is great news! He confirms what those of us supporters have known for a long time. Obama is ready to lead.

Mark G   October 19th, 2008 9:32 am ET

Hopefully this will put all of the unjust criticism away for good. Obama is ready to lead. He doesn't need on the job training, and despite what McCain says, he doesn't know what to do on Day One. That's why there is a transition period where the new presiden-elect gets up to speed. Of course, I'm sure McCain will spin this against Obama at some point.

Butch Dillon   October 19th, 2008 9:32 am ET

Powell is as unsympathetic a character as Cheney, Bush, Rummy, Rice, Gonzo and the rest. When it counted, he could not tell the truth and he could not withhold support for the most trumped up war in American history. He shares in the guilt for all that has gone wrong in Iraq, and he still believes the invasion was the right thing to do. No, Powell is no hero, he's just another politician looking for rewards. And now that Obama has done all the heavy lifting to reach the verge of the presidency, the general decides to offer his endorsement. This is clearly another reach for the redemption I hope he will never receive.

brian   October 19th, 2008 9:32 am ET

wow! Very bad news for McCain!

Amy: God Bless McCain/Palin   October 19th, 2008 9:31 am ET

Who cares he was never a true republican anyway. So he's voting for Obama because he is inspiring??? WOW thank God we never had Mr. Powell run for President since he thinks the only qualification is to be inspiring. I'll take a war hero, someone who keeps our country safe, someone who's against abortion, and a man with strait talk anyday that's why I will be voting for John McCain-the only man who will help our nation continue to be safe and secure.

CindyN--PA   October 19th, 2008 9:31 am ET

So glad to see he came out for Obama this morning. Makes me smile today. I just want to say, all I hear this a.m. in the news is about Socialism and spreading the wealth around. I have just one thing to say about that.

Why is it ok to spread the debt around?

JFK   October 19th, 2008 9:31 am ET

Glad to see a well balanced, intelligent person like Powell who can look beyond party lines and see Obama is truly better for our country.

Allen   October 19th, 2008 9:31 am ET

I knew he would. Powell is a man of Honor who puts the good of his Country before politics. OK President Obama. Make Powell your Secretary of State and America can re clain the respect of the world.

This is the best news, thank you Mr Powell.

sally   October 19th, 2008 9:30 am ET

Thank you General Powell for being a true American and looking beyond party affiliation to what our great country truly needs at this important time in its history.

maxine   October 19th, 2008 9:30 am ET

If Sen. McCain reads these comments here is somethings to thinks about:

You said you rather lose the race for president than lose the war but it now seems you rather lose your diginity and a great legacy to win the presidency.

Please thinks about what you are really doing to yourself

rachel   October 19th, 2008 9:30 am ET
