Some McCain insiders believe Colorado is out of reach.
Some McCain insiders believe Colorado is out of reach.

(CNN) — The McCain campaign is looking at an Electoral College strategy heading into the final two weeks that has virtually no room for error and depends heavily on a dramatic comeback in Pennsylvania, which hasn't backed a Republican for president in 20 years.

While Iowa, New Mexico and Colorado are still officially listed as McCain target states, two top strategists and advisers tell CNN that the situation in those states looks increasingly bleak. Iowa and New Mexico always have been viewed as difficult races, but the similar assessment of Colorado reflects a dramatic shift for a campaign that had long counted on the state.

"Gone," was the word one top McCain insider used to describe those three states.

This source said while the polls in Colorado remain close, he and most others in the operation were of the opinion that the Obama campaign and its allies have a far superior ground/turnout operation and "most of us have a hard time counting on Colorado."

Campaign manager Rick Davis is among the dissenters, believing the state remains within reach, several sources in and close to the McCain campaign say.

Election Center: Check out the latest state polls

The McCain strategy depends on holding a handful of Bush '04 states that are now rated tossups by CNN: Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, Missouri and Nevada. It also depends on keeping Virginia, which CNN now considers leaning Democratic, in the GOP column.

But even if McCain won all six of those states, in addition to those in which he is already favored, he would still be shy of the 270 electoral votes needed to claim the presidency.

Which is where Pennsylvania and its 21 electoral votes come into play. Most polls show McCain trailing by 10 points or more in the state, but one top adviser told CNN on Monday, "The election hinges on Pennsylvania. We'll win Virginia and Nevada in the end, but lose without Pennsylvania."

President Bush twice heavily targeted Pennsylvania — but both times came up short.

Despite the less than optimistic political assessment of Colorado, McCain at the moment continues to buy television advertising in the state: roughly $700,000 a week the past two weeks with similar spending levels ordered for the week ahead.

Obama is spending a little less than $1 million a week in Colorado.

(One of the McCain sources said that ad spending in Colorado could be increased — even doubled — to somewhere in the ballpark of $1.5 million. "We're not giving up on Colorado," one of the sources said. "But we need to have a math scenario that doesn't count on it.”)

That Obama advantage is also on display in North Carolina, where the Democratic nominee has outspent McCain more than 3 to 1 on television ads.

In the past week, however, McCain essentially matched the Obama levels — $1.1 million to $1.2 million, respectively.

McCain campaign communications director Jill Hazelbaker disputed the sources' accounts.

"We see the race tightening both internally and in public polling," she said. "We are within striking distance in the key battleground states we need to win."

What the sources emphasized was that the campaign needed an alternative to 270 that did not count on Iowa, Nevada and Colorado. They did not say the campaign was ready to pull resources.

The internal discussions reflect the narrow menu of options for McCain.

The sources' sober assessment of Colorado and even more downbeat view of McCains prospects in Nevada come even as GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin campaigns Monday and Tuesday in Colorado and Nevada. From there, Palin moves on to Ohio.

[...] That is highly unlikely. In usually safe Colorado, Indiana and Virginia, McCain has a huge fight on his hands, and Obama is even with four points of the Republican senator in a poll yesterday in McCain’s home state of Arizona. Right now, the McCain battle plan seemed to be to virtually concede the loss of Colorado, but to treat Pennsylvania – which John Kerry took in 2004 – as still being winnable by the Republicans, even though most polls currently have him ten points behind there. On October 20, CNN outlined the McCain tactical approach in these terms: [...]

This just out, McCain is moving his election campaign to a small island in the Atlantic, it is the only place still red, there are three people there and they are all Republicans, hold it, just in, they all changed to Democrats, McCain is rowing off cursing Palin in a leaky canoe and trying to act like he knows what he is doing, which he trulyu does not because he is headed for Palestine if he keeps going the way he is, but then, they could use anothermoron there too, right?

'Socialist' is an ugly word in the USA. We should deal with it.

Consider If citizen A did a great job and earned 300,000, while citizen B earns 40,000.

If I take an additional 200 from A and just give it to B, that would be socialism. But if the 200 goes instead to roads and schools and police that A needs and wants as much as B, then the only real issue is why wasn't it shared equally?

Half of it, $100 more in taxes, sinks B–his 40K barely covered living expenses, so now he's bankrupt. Can't cover the groceries, so his kids fail more at school, and who knows where that goes. Citizen A, meanwhile, has to cut his vacation from 7 days to 6. And meanwhile the roads are repaired and the firemen still have jobs, so his life is safer.

You can't get blood out of stones, out of the people at the level of the road. Joe Biden is right, it is patriotic to pay taxes because common cause is the only way that works, to keep the whole picture functioning for all.

I do it and I have always been proud of it.

I been reading alot of comments on these websites and blogs you got some really vocal pc users on here. Now about this election, we (as in some black folks) havent had a choice of of electing a "biracial candidate". so to me I have that choice and that choice is really a 2 for 1 he is half white and half black and i will take that while i can. i tried to listen to president bush and mccain but it just dont sit right with me. I heard all the issues and i'm voting on what MATTER to me. the rich should drop some of thier money they wont be broke and i understand they worked hard for it but really, what are they doing with the money??? they should give it to those in need in other countries, people that have less. and i'm tired of these pc users refering to liberal or conservative or what ever they clam to be. we should go by what we are and that is human beings. DO NOT LET THE PARTY NAME FOOL YOU.

Anyway i am truly greatful that Mrs Hillary Clinton prepared Mr. Barack Obama for this BULL CRAP that is taking place now

I read an article that said Americans believe McCain is using too much negative advertising. What? What ads? I listened to Obama speak in FL today and all he did was make fun of McCain. Who's negative here? Do people really not hear what is being said? Obama nevers says what he is going to do. He just keeps repeating negative statements about McCain. Communication skills are so important. This does not mean only speaking. It means comprehension. How are these Obama supporters not comprehending what is really being said? Cut McCain, say he's negative, but never say anything positive yourself. It appears so many people are worried about losing their jobs. You should be. I will guarantee you that with Obama's economic plan you will be losing your jobs. You will be losing your health insurance. You will be in the line for government handouts that Obama wants for everyone. Businesses will not be able to afford all his tax hikes. They will be forced to make cuts. Prices will rise. You better re-think or, for some, start thinking, about your vote. It is so important and you will be hurting.

Marc   October 20th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

Too bad the guy with the best message, John McCain, is unable to get noticed by independents and undecideds. We're living in an oligarchy people. Obama is outspending McCain 2-1, 3-1, even 8-1 here in VA, on misleading ads. He's well-funded by his koolaid drinking college kids and liberal elite who in no way represent the majority of America. Oh well, I'm keepin my fingers crossed for the Bradley effect.

The McCain camp had long been looking for ways to win without a positive platform, but as that has failed to work, the McCain camp is now considering how it can win without votes. The current options McCain opreatives are considering include election fraud (having the machines tally votes for Obama as votes for McCain) and coup.

Don Johnston of Iowa   October 20th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

What is being said by the McCain camp is they know they have lost the Presidential election and are trying to stop the damage to the Republican Congres that is already a bloodletting so McCain does not lose favor altogether with the GOP for destroying everything they have, but sorry to let them both know, they brought this on themselves and it is all over except for the fat lady singing, and she is already warming up in the aisles, get the crying towels out Republicans, you are all going to have to get a real job come Nov 4 because there will not be enough rep[ublicans left in Washington to shake a stick at and those who are there will be afraid to even open their mouths for fear of leaving soon behind their brethren, America is tired of the failed Republican policies and devisiveness and bigotry and is ready for a change, a big change that will not include the Republicans unless they wake up and make major changes as well, which we all realize is something they will never do because of arrogance, so perhaps this is the end of the GOP, could not have come to a more deserving party.

McCain's problem in Colorado has to do with his statement earlier this summer about revisiting the water deal between those states in the West with water (ie Colorado) and those without (ie Arizona).

That is an incredibly touchy subject for those with, and could be considered the primary subject for some folks out there. By saying he would revisit those agreements, he put himself on the wrong side that argument with those people.

If polls hold true, McCain is already mathematically out of this race. He should stop wasting his supporters' donated money. But.. McCain is a contradiction… He'll still take his supporters donations.. as he's giving up on the states that he needs to take in order to win.

If he runs this country as erratically and illogically as he runs his campaign.. we would be doomed.

weneedstrongleadership   October 20th, 2008 7:03 pm ET

Check the facts people, the reason why Obama has outspent McCain is for the simple fact that Obama's campaign is only accepting money through donations. It's not Barrack's fault that McCain had the oppurtunity to accept donations but declined and took government funding over donations, the american people have said enough of the way Busch/McCain have run washington and have had there chance to tell america by donating.

Stephen   October 20th, 2008 7:03 pm ET

I don't understand why the Republican Party and the McCain/Palin campaign haven't figured out that the attack ads aren't going to work in 2008. The Carl Rove strategy, which has worked in the past and primarily appealed to older voters, will not be effective this time around because the voting demographics have changed. So, they can continue to spend but as long as it's negative ads, it won't help.

For McCain to win CO he has to sweep all of the rural areas with about 70%, then somehow hope that Colorado Springs and Pueblo outdo Denver and Boulder while Fort Collins, Greeley, and the rest of the Northern I-25 corridor is at best a split.

Not gonna happen.

FL Rep for Obama   October 20th, 2008 7:02 pm ET

FL and NV will go blue, too! We're working really hard here in FL to give our state to Obama! Early voting started today…can't tell you how many former Repubs were in line voting for OBAMA!!

Belinda   October 20th, 2008 7:02 pm ET

Colorado is out of reach although Palin will be here (3) times this week.
Gone Baby Gone!

Obama/Biden 2008

Mike in Texas   October 20th, 2008 7:02 pm ET

McCain will not take Pennsylvania. He is not close in any state that went Blue in 2000. If he is conceding Colorado and he loses it the rest doesn't matter. But it is all in the hands of the voters.

A Woman In California For Obama:   October 20th, 2008 7:01 pm ET

First of all I want to say thank you to Colin Powell. Limbo's statements don't bother me since I considered the source. However, Pat Buchanan's statements did. He had the nerve to say C. Powell was "ungrateful" for all the things the republican party had done for him. First of all, the republican party didn't give him anything-he worked for it and paid all his debt in full. Buchanan should be fired as he really contributes nothing but spiteful madness. Ed Gordon (guest MSNBC) asked Chris Matthews if he had ever been asked why he was voting for a white person. Of course no one could honestly answer that so why is it Mr. Powell is being asked about "his vote?" He doesn't owe anyone anything. It is his God given right to do what he wants to and I for one welcome him. Smart man-smart choice.

Second, I am disappointed in all the Obama supporters who chose to look at that hateful Palin woman on SNL. I personally made sure I didn't watch her ugly face on my t.v. You need to stop making her feel we enjoy her hateful rhetoric. I know she's a good laugh but I can't find her funny. She incites hate and that may possibly get Sen. Obama and his family hurt or worse. She better hope and pray this doesn't happen…

I just hope Americans can look beyond color barriers and vote what is best for YOU in your situation. Nov. 4th can't come fast enought.

tatertot   October 20th, 2008 7:01 pm ET

Pennsylvania is also next to impossible for McCain. They are still adverstising here heavily but there are now 1.2 million more registered Democrats in the state than Republicans. 4 years ago when Kerry carried the state there were only 200,000 more registered Democrats. PA is over.

Jen   October 20th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

It's impossible for McCain to win without Colorado unless he gets a Kerry state, all of which have been polling even more favorably for Obama (mostly double digits.) If McCain gives up Colorado, the race is over.

sophia nyc   October 20th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

a way to win without:
CO
FL
MO
NM
VA
NC

etc.

sue   October 20th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

McCain is running a divisive campaign that clearly shows he cannot run this country as a uniter. He has adopted all the Bush campaign strategies of divide and conquer campaign and will clearly be a Bush 3rd term.

rich   October 20th, 2008 6:58 pm ET

I hate to bring you the bad news McCain (O.K..my nose is growing as I type), but there is no way to win Colorado. There is still hope in the Senate though. Ill look into it and get back to ya.

Kate   October 20th, 2008 6:58 pm ET

I live in PA…and I don't know a single person who is voting for McCain. If his win depends on winning PA, then it's over for him. He might as well stop campaigning now and save the money.

Charla in TX   October 20th, 2008 6:58 pm ET

I keep seeing folks on here saying how Obama has run the dirtiest campaign in history. Can someone please explain? I have yet to see any dirty politics towards the McCain camp from the Obama camp.

1 vote here for Obama/Biden..Norfolk,VA   October 20th, 2008 6:58 pm ET

Obama08 but...   October 20th, 2008 6:58 pm ET

mccain could still win this thing if he dropped Palin, got Romney or Huckabee and picked Donald Trump for his treasury department.

YES WE WILL - TEXAS   October 20th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

McCain will have to give up TEXAS, too. My husband and I voted early today for Barack Obama. We are both registered Repulican's.

We are so proud of Baack Obama and Joe "the Senator".

Barack Obama is going to be one of America's greatest Presidents.

I can see Russia   October 20th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

McCain has shown that you don't win a fight with low blows.

Shane   October 20th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

If Rick Davis truly believes Colorado is within reach, he's as out of touch as his candidate.

McCain's campaign is in an utter shambles. It's almost like watching a car accident now…

Ivoteme   October 20th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

350 million freakin people in this country and these four idiots are the best we can come up with. PATHETIC.. McCain is to old, palin is to inexp. O is even more inexp and Biden is the biggest baffon in politics.

My mom just convinced her 'forever Republican, tattoo wearing, long haired, harley bike riding, country talking' fiance to vote for Obama. Colorado is bluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuue baby. Throw it in the Obama column.

undecided nebraska voter   October 20th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

can someone say screwed???

K. Howe   October 20th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

I hope the trend for Obama continues. It would be nice to see that negative personal attacks and "mistruths" do not have to be a part of a political campaign. I've always respected John McCain, but find it hard to keep up that respect in light of the tactics of his campaign.

Colin Powell was dead on right in his anaysis of this campaign!

Texas Teacher   October 20th, 2008 6:54 pm ET

I don't think McCain and Palin can beat the Democratic message this year! In our area the University crowd are very well informed. They know who they are voting for and why! I think everyone should take note. These kids are going to be the future! And I think they are speaking!

John Driscoll   October 20th, 2008 6:54 pm ET

Maybe McLame needs to run some more negative ads.
-it seems to be working great for him!

That One '08/'12

mitch   October 20th, 2008 6:54 pm ET

mccain wont get my vote. i voted fro barack, today. any repub dont like it can kiss my lilly white rear!

Farrell, Houston, Tx   October 20th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

Whether Palin is hurting McCain is obvious and of course no one expects McCain to admit his error. It's not important that McCain admits his error because Americans are showing they don't support his error at the polls. This isn't the first time McCain's judgement has failed him and as time goes on it is likely it will be impaired.

david Armendale, SF, CA   October 20th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

what McCain is up against is "THE MATH" Rove so wonderfully implemented in 2006 which began this unraveling of the Republican monopoly on power in Washington. Rove's math and tactics will be the undoing of the Republicans this election. The GOP has succeeded in fooling some of the people some of the time in the past – too many are wiser as a result for the same diversionary tactics to work again this election.

OBAMA 08

Lee from FL   October 20th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

good luck, early voting started in florida and i cast mine for obama.
i was surprised how long the lines were.

Stan, NM   October 20th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

Dear Rick Davis,

It's over, Barack will win. Go home, put your feet up and have a beer, preferably with John McCain. We're going to win, and I'm going to Florida this weekend to help make that happen.

Obama/Biden 08

Allah Bless Our Messiah   October 20th, 2008 6:52 pm ET

The reason the "american people" think McCain is running a negative campaign is because CNN is saying so, over and over and over again. CNN and the other organs of the Democrat party are guilty of the rape of our country. We will never ever forget and we will never forgive.

jo   October 20th, 2008 6:52 pm ET

Early voting in Co. Me and five of my friends just came from voting. Obama has our vote

Carol   October 20th, 2008 6:52 pm ET

If Colorado voters can't SEE that obama is a "wolf in sheeps clothing" they are going to be sorry. Our economy is in deep trouble and needs a cut in spending BY GOVERNMENT as well as the American public. It's the only way to turn the economy around. Obama is not going to REDUCE 95% of the taxes people pay, just redistribute how he gets it from US. We will pay some way or the other. With him in, he will announce that he mis-calculated his figures, SORRY, but you will have to pay more in taxes ! On tyhe other hand, McCain will reduce spending to a point that we will recover a lot less painfully. He( John ) will put the interests of the US Voter public first, he will put country first. Know this and VOTE accordingly.

Josh from DC   October 20th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

McCain is like a 10 year old trying to win a game of risk with only 4 pieces left. Throwing a temper tantrum about how the other guy must have cheated. He may pick up the board and throw it at obama before admitting defeat. Throw in the towel old guy…we want change.

Shane   October 20th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

Good plan McGrumpy … Colorado is going blue this year : )

Brenda   October 20th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

It's OVER McCain … bow out gracefully. You stated you would just go back to Arizona and live in one of your seven houses … do that, and don't forget to JET Sarah Palin back to Alaska as you slipped her in …

Hip Hop Producers for Obama/Biden   October 20th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

CNN you can stop trying to manipulate the polls! Obama, by the way, i believe is ahead MUCH MUCH more than these so called polls are showing but at the same time folks PLEASE GO VOTE! DON'T "EXPECT" THAT WE ARE AHEAD AND YOUR FRIEND IS VOTING SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO. SEND PALIN AND HER LYING BS BACK TO THE ICE STATE!!!

Eric   October 20th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

Going, going . . . .

Beah   October 20th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

Senator McCain, you lost my vote because your campaign became so negative. Senator Obama is not a terrorist. He does not practice socialism/communism. TAX CUT FOR AMERICANS WHO DOES NOT MAKE $250,000.00 PER YEAR IS NOT WELFARE.

PEOPLE WHO DID NOT WORK OR NOT WORKING AND RECEIVING MONEY FROM THE GOVERNMENT IS WELFARE.

D. White   October 20th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

I think this is a great GOP strategy. Giuliani says its the way to go. yup.

OBAMA 08

McCain can't win without Colorado. He just can't.

former gop   October 20th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

I know! Since calling Obama a terrorist didn't work and calling Obama a socialist didn't work – how about McCain change his slogan to: Obama eats kittens!

rowzeer   October 20th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

for all those that think that black voting overwhelmingly for Barack is because he's black stop and think…Blacks always vote overwhelming Democratic.

There has never been a signficant black vote for Repubs. If Barack were white…do you think blacks would vote for McCain?

Catholic-mom-4-OBAMA   October 20th, 2008 6:47 pm ET

YEAH…………COLORADO………..IS…………….BLUE!!!!!!!

THANK YOU COLORADO!

COME ON COLLEGE STUDENTS GET OUT AND VOTE!

YES WE CAN!!

LET'S REJECT THE POLITICS OF HATE, LIES AND FEAR OF THE REPUBLICANS!

Ruth Griffin   October 20th, 2008 6:47 pm ET

anne   October 20th, 2008 6:46 pm ET

Maybe McCain should just go back to Arizona right now.

Tiff of lithia springs   October 20th, 2008 6:46 pm ET

GOOD LUCK WITH THAT BUDDY!

YOU DON'T HAVE CALI OR NY AND LOOKS LIKE FL IS OUT THE WINDOW.

THESE ARE INTELLIGENT PEOPLE. THEY SEE RIGHT THROUGH YOU NO POLICY/MCBUSH EFFORTS.

Love Huckabee   October 20th, 2008 6:46 pm ET

i wish CNN would be truthful. Today Obama has a 11 point lead in the gallup poll, and a 6-8 point lead on Real clear politics. Ok, so you got your horse race, but give up this nonsense already. The polls may be inflated, but highly unlike McCain will recover from this stupidity!

Obama 08

REDNECKS LOVE OBAMA   October 20th, 2008 6:45 pm ET

Colorado voters…. vote for Obama…. remember the slogan of Hillary Clinton….JOBS BABY JOBS

Lilarose in Bandon-by-the-Sea, Oregon   October 20th, 2008 6:44 pm ET

If you support Obama, don't get complacent thinking because he is ahead in the polls that he is going to win the election.

YOU HAVE TO VOTE!

AND YOUNG PEOPLE–you are the culprits most of the time–lots of talk and no do!

I have never missed an election since JFK–not a local, state, or national election. I worked on Robert Kennedy's campaign until the moment he was murdered.

Obama is a special man like JFK and RFK. I was there then and I know it now!

Do your duty and you will elect the best candidates! OBAMA/BIDEN

Barbara - 65 yr old white female in NC   October 20th, 2008 6:44 pm ET

He could maybe campaign for the position for the first Dude in Alaska as soon as Sarah's husband gets the state away from the United States.
