It's not that they are "unfair" so much as blatantly untrue.

As to the socialist comments, they are based on the refundable tax credits (that can result in bringing the taxes below $0):

The CENTRAL TENET of McCain's health plan is a $5,000 refundable tax credit.

It is wholly inadequate to cover the average cost of a policy for a family; it still results in the same type of tax credit that McCain is deriding.

But the truth does not seem be particularly important to the McCain campaign.

I'm so fed up with "Desperation Politics". McCain and Palin have nothing positive to say about things we want to hear. All they spew is venomous unfounded negative comments about their competitors. It proves to me that McCain and Palin are losers.

It is a fact that McCain/Palin have conducted a much more negative campaign than Obama/Biden! They're hoping the American public won't be able to see through the campaign to get at the truth!!

Palin is bringing back McCarthyism and anyone voting for her should be SCARED!!!!

That woman changes words and meanings to suit her and how she thinks.

She may accuse Obama of being a socialist, but she should be accused of being a follower of McCarthyism!

Be weary people! If McCain/Palin wins, you will have to be careful of what you have said since the day you were born and you will have to know everything of anyone you have ever known or sat beside at a traffic light.

Palin is brining blacklisting back!

I am so happy that McCain does not have the money for all the negative ads that he would like to run. America would be totally covered with mud by election day. We would not be able to recognize each other.

One definition of socialism, since both Palin and McCain seem to lean Obama that way is: a society where there is no PRIVATE property....Obama does not say he wants the government or the whole of a society to control all property. However, McCain, in his economic wisdom would like to have the US Government buy up mortgages at current value, then "sell" them back at a lower price to the same homebuyers (maybe) making those "homeowners" now owing the government the mortgage (or should we call it now rent) payment. Bush is already going ahead with buying shares in banks nationwide; Bush gave an "economic stimulus" to the citizens twice since he took office in 2001...hmmm, is this "spreading the wealth" around or is it just trickle down economics ala Reagan? McCain has "lived off" the Federal Govt all his life with govt paid housing, college, retirement, disability and social security, and oh yes, health care. So, who is the one calling "the kettle black?" The same goes for his and Palin's "elitist" statements about Obama. I don't think McCain or Palin would give any of us the time of day, much less be called "my friend" to our faces.

Why is it "unfair" to call Obama's programs socialism, WHEN IT IS EXACTLY WHAT THEY ARE. That's not negative, that is a FACT. Obama is a joke! Apparently you CAN put lipstick on a pig and transform it into something else because that is exactly what Obama has done. He has lipsticked his ideas with so called "eloquence" and charisma. Eloquence and charisma does not make his ideas good, it makes the people that fail to look beyond that idiots, for not being able to see what his programs really are.

ken in dallas and all the ill-informed kool-aid drinkers

Sarah Palin has, as governor of Alaska, imposed a windfall profits tax on oil companies producing in Alaska and used the money to issue checks to all the citizens of Alaska. Palin raised taxes in Alaska so she could spread the wealth. Evidently, socialism works for Sarah Palin.

McCain never told me a thing - seems all he did was bash Mr. Obama - the last straw was calling him a socialist-Pretty low. Why is it when the USA provides billions of aid overseas we are good samaritans -when someone suggests helping the poor at home then it is socialism?

Seems to me the republican VP's main objective is - no experience required - just do a major bash job on Ombama.

Seems all the republicans did was copy-cat democrats - no fresh ideas.

One more thing - McCain says he is not Mr. Bush - well, perhaps citizens are thinking in terms of 16 more years of republican policy not Mr. Bush personally. Everyone knows we are talking republican policies not persona.....

I don't know if citizens cannot figure it out.

JUST SICK OF THE BASHING - MR. MCCAIN AND MS PALIN SHOULD HAVE A PLATFORM----BEEN WAITING ALLLLL THIS TIME TO HEAR IT. JUST DISGUSTED WITH THE WHOLE THING.

The danger with this is that it could make Obama supporters complacent. All of this needs to be ignored and in order to stop the possibility of another dreadful 4 years like the last 8 we need to continue to get out the vote and highlight the dangers of an McCain/Palin presidency. This is our chance...lets not blow it!

Wow! The McCain trolls are out in force today!!

Other than that, frankly, weak ad about McCain not knowing how to email, there hasn't been one Obama ad that could reasonably be described as an unfair, negative attack on McCain's (or Palin's) character.

Simply pointing out differences in policy in an ad is NOT equivalent to vicious, rumor-mongering, deceptive, and often outright dishonest attacks on a candidate's character or trying to imply a lack of honesty, patriotism or loyalty.

Very simply, McCain is a desperate man who sees his one chance to take the big prize slipping away, and he is selling his soul to try to make it happen.

LOL, Mike in VA, you're the example of why the Republicans including McCain will lose. All of that nonsense is exactly that, nonsense. You righties take a story and add about 80% lie and then try to convince everyone including yourselves that those are the facts when they have been disproven time and time again. You people better get used to the Obama Administration and those of us who don't have filth for brains in our heads will be watching people like you just in case anyone of you wants to put "country first" and do Obama. So sad to see how the once moderate GOP has collapsed into a cesspool of right wingers living in complete denial and self hate.

The poll doesn't say anything factual, it just gauges the opinion of the people whom it asks. The perception, however, is very harmful for the McCain campaign. The M/P campaign has come across as erratic, vindictive, and without focus or platform. Not terribly inspirational in such uncertain economic times. McCain and Palin look like the most important thing to them is to win and go to the White House. Obama and Biden look like the most important thing is to keep on fighting for all the people who have come to their rallies, starting the day that they win the election. There's a big difference. I'll be voting for Obama on Wednesday in early voting!

Well I agree we did not need a poll to tell us that. If we are all honestthis election has not been good for the Country. The total election has been too negative. But when people like Limbaugh says what he said today makes me wonder have we come very far. Doesn't Rush know a lot of us republicans have switched to Obama this year because he is simply the best of the two. And no Rush I am not black just an American who wants the best person running for President.

It's pretty sad when most American's have become so stupid and ignorant that they see Obama as a wise chose for this country. Get a clue. All Obama will give us are higher taxes and a weak country. Do the math you morons, how can 95% of American's get a tax break when 40% don't pay taxes. And I am sorry, I am with Joe the plumber, I worked for my money, I don't need some lazy jerk in the White House who can't even show up for work as a Senator to tell me I need to share my wealth with some other lazy @ss. If I want to give my money away I will...to the NRA. Obama has spent far more money lying to the American people and all you moron's are eating it up. Hope you all like cabage and potatoes, because that's all your going to be able to afford to eat in the Obama regime...welcome to the new found republic of the United Socialist of America.

As a lifelong registered independent and veteran, I am exactly who McCain/Palin should be targeting.

Was a McCain supporter in 2000 - always dislike Bush the younger.

Instead, they have driven me away.

Just plain disgusted with their campaign methods.

Go Obama/Biden.

How about the unjust and unfair remarks about Hillary and Palin. Poor little Obama!! Listen, this campaign has been about "race" not "negativity". The media, Oprah, now Powell want Obama in for obvious reasons. Powell might be smart (although I no longer view him in the same way since he slapped the people who gave him his start in the face) but Obama is NOT SMART. He most likely will get in and we are all in big trouble if he does. Powell is not running for President - Obama sadly is and his color is going to get him in - not his leadership or his being intelligent. Sad day for America if he gets in. His wife can go back to being unproud of America like she always has been.

I still don't understand why the media is just now questioning a Republican's tactic, when Republicans did the same thing to Kerry with the swift boat. That was unfair. And the writer of swift boat even said that it was not based on actual factual documentation but on just the opinions of a few. Republicans are big at lies and inuendo and have been for decades. In fact if all of the Republican Campaigns from Nixon's to McCain's were examined on what they said of the other guy and what was factual, It might surprise everyone to see just how the lies, small lies, and half truths became the power of the Republicans.

About time you placed a story in front of the one with the picture of that fat-faced loud mouth bigot Limbaugh. Why do you waste your time even giving this guy ant attention at all. The very sight of him along with his racist tirades on the radio make most sensible people sick.

No one needs a poll to understand that Mccain has attacked Obama unfairly. Naturally there will be a war of words against politicians running against one another. But everyone knows that McCain's attacks have been deeply personal and filled with innuendo that Obama is not one of us, that he is not an Amercian, with a touch of racism in all these attacks.

Obama has spent more money on negative adds and has put more on the air than McCain!
I't because of the vast amount of money and adds make it look different than it is. Obama is out spending him 6 to one on adds so if Obama puts out only 30% of his adds as negative it will still be more than McCain.
ALSO Lets be honest about the Powell endorsement,
Powell is the one who sold the American people the Iraq war as the right thing to do! when it comes to polices Colin Powell is lock step with McCain. He is a true republican BUT, he is an AFRICAN AMERICAN 1st then a republican. He sees the writing on the wall and rightfully so, this may be the only time in his life that he will have an opportunity to support a black candidate.

I was a die-hard Republican for many many years (I'm 60 now). I've worked on many a Republican campaign-- right now to knocking on doors & takling face to face with people.

But I can NOT support the continued failed policies; the lies & deceit & corruption; the spreading of hate, bigotry, & fear; and the ignorance all now exhibited by the GOP as a whole.

I've already voted, and while I voted for a couple of local Republicans, I cast my Presidential/VP vote for Barack Obama & Joe Biden. I sincerely hope a majority of Texans will finally see thru the filth we have been subjected to by George Bush & Dick Cheney & Karl Rove & Newt Gingrinch & Rush Limbaugh & all the rest of their disgusting GOP machinery, will stand up and say enough-is-enough! It's time to say "yeah, it's broke, let's try to fix it" and give Obama & Biden the opportunity.

Yep, I'm going to get hit with higher taxes (being in that mythical 5%), but ya know, we're ALL going to get hit with higher taxes no matter what we make.... why??? ..... because of the fact that George Bush has run up a 10 TRILLION DOLLAR national debt (and still climbing). So remember that when doing your taxes for the next 20 years-- you'll still be paying off the Bush/Cheney debt!

Why would Warren Buffett support Obama if Obama is a "socialist?"

McCain is NOT PRESIDENTIAL for the following reasons:

He says things repeating them when they are obvious lies, because on some other occasion he has actually said the exact opposite, is he senile? Is that the onset of dementia or is that the real McCain!

He is a mean-spirited and irritable man; he behaves like a child whose toys have been taken over by another. is his juvenile behavior and mean spirit ness an onset of senility or dementia? or is that the real McCain?

He claims he is an expert on foreign policy and national security, my friends I have only heard contradictory, mixed up lies regarding past events, names and actions on these policies from McCain. Is this the onset of senility or dementia or is this the real McCain.

My conclusion is that he is either at the onset of senility or dementia or HE IS CLULESS ABOUT THE REALITIES OF THE CHALLENGES FACING AMERICA AND THE REST OF THE WORLD IN THE 21st CENTURY. I will settle for clueless!!!

God bless America.

I am throughly enjoying the collective panic attack of the right wingers here. Brings a smile to my face, actually. It's about time that you nuts were marginalized. Welcome to the next 4 years, whackos. :-)
