Obama lawyer calls for internal Justice Department investigation

The Obama campaign called Monday for an internal DOJ investigation in the wake of increased federal scrutiny of ACORN, a community organizing group.
The Obama campaign called Monday for an internal DOJ investigation in the wake of increased federal scrutiny of ACORN, a community organizing group.

(CNN) – Obama campaign general counsel Bob Bauer called Monday for a government investigation into whether the White House is working with John McCain’s campaign to raise allegations of voter fraud, telling reporters attorney general Michael Mukasey needed to step in to ensure investigators are "not misused for partisan purposes."

A special prosecutor is investigating similar charges against the Justice Department over the controversial dismissals of several U.S. attorneys, including David Yglesias, who said he was fired for resisting pressure to prosecute ACORN, the embattled community group at the center of a sustained Republican campaign alleging voter fraud among supporters of Barack Obama.

Bauer spoke with reporters on a Monday conference call days after news broke that the FBI is taking a closer look at ACORN. Last week, he said the special prosecutor’s mandate should be expanded to include the rising government scrutiny of the community group.

On Monday, he sent a letter to Mukasey saying said that the inspector general needed to investigate, because the prosecutor didn’t have the jurisdiction needed to look into the department’s activities - whether it complied with its own policies.

ACORN has said it registered roughly 1.3 million voters this year, but has come under fire because some of the registrations turned in by contract workers hired by the group have contained false information.

I don't see how this reflects well on Obama. Rather than clarifying exactly how he is supposedly not pro-ACORN despite having represented them as a lawyer in the past and having given them thousands during the primaries against Clinton, he now seems to be defending them again! If anything this reflects very, very poorly on him. He should be trying to distance himself from the group, not defending them!!!

    Indy but leaning...
The party that has tried to destroy our constitution is the Republican party. Look at the tearing down of personal freedom and privacy under the Bush admin.
Our only hope is with Obama this election. We would welcome you too! Be a little more open to new ideas man, we are, after all, both Americans first and formost. Divided we fall, United we stand.

I wish it was also reported that it was ACORN recently that brought the problems they had with some employees to the attention of the public. Not exactly something you do if you are trying to be really shady. But McCain or CNN can't ever mention THAT. Thank God Obama is 100 times smarter than McCain and our media networks.

I have to say, it sure is nice to watch the Democrats say.. "Enough of this crap, we're fighting back" instead of just rolling over.

Mccain is an extraordinary man. The people behind his campaign are idiots. He should have fired them all and should have never picked Palin. McCain is earning no respect from this Party member such as Powell and Buckley. That's too bad.

    I voted Obama.

good. lets talk about how the New Mexico GOP said that 25 latinos voter registration from ACORN is fraud. Turns out it is incorrect. they are legally and validly registered to vote. I agree with Obama that the GOP accusing ACORN of wide spread voter reigistration fraud is bogus.

I do believe that in order to vote at the polls, one has to actually show proof of residence, ala a driver's license or a utility bill, or other form of id with proof of who you are. Let's hope that we have some Democrate poll watchers that can verify CURRENT registered voters and avoid what happend in Ohio in 2004. Being from AZ, I just mailed in my ballot, but still don't trust the voting "powers that be" here, especially since it was stated at the Rep convention by our Sec of State or election official that she "will do whatever it takes to win the election."

Right, that's the problem, the Bush administration is turning this into a political issue. It's not that ACORN is actually corrupt, with the help of Obama's money.

I'm sure Obama's lawyer will also demand an investigation into the investigation of Palin's "undue" influence on her ex brother-in-law.

I am disgusted with the McCain camp for going on and on about Acorn, Obama has said his campaign is not involved with Acorn. McCain move on and talk about how you will get us out of the MESS that you and Bush created. I am so happy that the Obama camp is fighting back. "Go Obama & Biden Go"

Good for Obama for putting these unfounded Republican smears to rest. Honestly, registration fraud and voter fraud are two different things. Mickey Mouse/superheroes/the deceased are not going to show up to cast their ballots on Election Day, and ACORN pointed out the false registrations upon submitting them to the board. They were required by law to submit ALL registrations. Also, people are often paid by organizations like ACORN to register voters, so who's to say some lazy person didn't register all those names just to get the money? Think!

It wouldn't surprise me if the White House was involved in this. It wouldn't be the first time they've used their authority, combined with a lack of transparency, to manipulate the country for their partisan agenda.

McCain/Palin is more of the same – so I guess we shouldn't be surprised after troopergate.
