Palin says voters 'irritated' by robocalls

Palin discussed GOP robocalls and socialism on Sunday.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (CNN) – All of a sudden, Sarah Palin is eager to meet the press.

John McCain’s running mate took questions from her press corps for the second time in three days late Sunday after flying into Colorado Springs. But Palin was not completely on message.

Wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and standing on a breezy tarmac, Palin said that if she had her way, the McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee would not be flooding battleground states with automated phone calls tying Barack Obama to former radical William Ayers, as they have done over the last week.

Several top Republicans, including Senators Susan Collins and Norm Coleman, have condemned the tactic. Asked about those criticisms, Palin at first dismissed the matter as "inside baseball stuff" and said it's "some of the campaign top brass’s call on that."

But when asked if she would approve the use of robocalls if she were running the campaign, Palin said she’d probably chart a different course.

"If I called all the shots, and if I could wave a magic wand," Palin said, "I would be sitting at a kitchen table with more and more Americans, talking to them about our plan to get the economy back on track and winning the war, and not having to rely on the old conventional ways of campaigning that includes those robocalls, and includes spending so much money on the television ads that, I think, is kind of draining out there in terms of Americans' attention span.

"They get a bit irritated with just being inundated," she continued, "and you're seeing a lot of that of course with the huge amounts of money that Barack Obama is able to spend on his ads and his robocalls also."

Ultimately, the Alaska governor said she was not calling for an end to the automated calls, and she did not say if she had spoken to campaign officials at any point about the calls.

Palin was also asked if she and McCain believe that Barack Obama’s tax plan, which would raise taxes on Americans making over $250,000 and provide tax credits to middle and lower-income workers, is socialist. At a campaign rally in New Mexico earlier Sunday, Palin said Obama wants to "experiment with socialism."

"There are socialist principles to that, yes," Palin said of Obama's plan. "Taking more from a small business or small business owners or from a hard working family and then redistributing that money according to a politician’s priorities. There are hints of socialism in there."

Asked if she thinks the government’s plan to inject billions of taxpayer dollars directly into troubled banks amounts to socialism - a belief held by many conservative legislators, talk radio hosts and bloggers - Palin said, "No, I do not."

"I believe that there are those measures that had to be taken by congress to shore up not only the housing market but the credit markets also, to make sure that that’s not frozen, so that our small businesses have opportunities to borrow, and that was the purpose, of course, and that part of the bailout and the shoring of the banks," she said.

Another example of this campaign not knowing which hand is doing what. I am sure the McCain campaign was not happy with her comments

So she should open her mouth towards McCain. Talking to voters is just pandering.

Palin knows how to run a winning campaign. She knows how to reach voters and connect. She knows how to listen. McCain would be well advised to listen to her.

Those running the show blew great chances to use momentum created by Palin and they blew it both times. And this auto-phone all thing, well Palin is honest and I agree. There is a better way.

with all of the "money" games the RNC has to compete with because Obama broke his word about public funding, they have no choice but to run robo calls. At least the McCain campaign can be trusted to keep their word to the American people.

Sarah Palin and other new comers to the political process represent a new idea and future agenda no matter which party that represent. It’s well past time to put all the old dinosaur’s in Congress on notice and head them towards retirement. It’s the OLD people in D.C. that are ruining America today. Go Sarah and Go Obama!

I have not decided on who to vote for, but the media is really starting to annoy me. Obviously, CNN is a political entity for Obama; whereas FOX is for McCain – so it's hard to find an outlet that is truly unbiased. I like Obama, but there are some things that irritate me. Why won't he release his birth certificate? That is troubling, because if you investigate this issue online, there are many credible articles that cast doubt on his citizenship. And the factcheck version has already been exposed as a Photoshop fraud. Also, Obama doesn't have to act so arrogant – it turns a lot of voters off. He has a message, so why the pompous attitude? As for McCain, he has a good message as well, and Palin is not as bad as the media plays her up to be – but for some reason, he has trouble sustaining a theme. I have two more weeks to decide. One thing I do know.....the election will be much, much closer than CNN and FOX report. I would not be surprised if it ends up 269-269 and goes to a Congressional Vote.

This lady has nothing to offer us, she doesnt even understand McCains policy, if she did she would actually talk about it, instead shes the campaigns attack dog, figures, what a good role model for woman. Being used like a bad pet. Have to be a serious ditz to think someone like this airhead has anything to offer at a time like this. Not to mention that pro American area comment was way out of line, as an American im so offended by that i cant even believe someone was dumb enough to say that and not think before they spoke. Give me a break, a child could do a better job. News flash people, its not patriotic to walk blindly off a cliff with a failed administration, i know its in style....but its not patriotism tools. Anyway, the people voting for these 2 are ancient, they still seem to think Obama is muslim, that kind of stupidity leaves me speechless. All due to a 5 second clip on google, apparently these people dont realize 5 seconds doesnt give much insight into the convo....bunch of simple simons. Anyway that was what a year ago?? i think we've moved on, apparently the news is a little slow making it to the Republican areas =/ oh wait, thats right they watch fox. HAAAAAAA, and all this socialist talk, a few of you may want to look into our allies political stances and so on youd be surprised to find there are quite a few socialist ideas picked up by governments, want to know why?!?!?! it works!! moving on....

Holy crap!! The Barracuda making reasonable remarks??? what has their campaign come to – oh yeah... it's in the toilet. She was honest to a degree (negative robocalls are a turnoff, and I don't like getting inundated with ads – though I don't watch TV too much), but messed up about "socialist" and "bailouts". The government is basically socializing the economic system by giving it money and asking for a part of positive returns (if any) to be REDISTRIBUTED to the taxpayers funding the bailout. And the current tax system IS somewhat socialist because it's ALWAYS TAXED HIGHER BRACKETS MORE and REDISTRIBUTED wealth to programs helping all (in theory...). The problem has been tax breaks to companies sending work overseas (which increases their profit, but obviously nixes American jobs), and NOT taxing windfall profits by (lets say) the oil companies who basically sucked money from every American citizens wallet and small business and redistributing it to those it was taken from. Main point is Repubs are seizing a comment and blowing it out of proportion – this does not indicate the kind of leadership (a lack of) that is needed now.

"inside baseball stuff", so now she's stealing lines from Obama.

Why is Palin using the 'S' word to describe Obama's tax plan? Bush's tax plan of 2003 did exactly the same thing by increasing the child care tax credit from $600 to $1,000, and according to the Wall Street Journal, 'bumping a touch more than three million taxpayers right off the rolls'. Since this is a refundable tax credit it also provided cash refunds to those that paid no income tax. Why wasn't it criticized when Bush did it?

Changing a progressive tax rate to different percentages is redistributing the tax burden rather than redistributing wealth. If the U.S. was a socialist country, the government would be taking over its banking system.

Redistributing the wealth would look something like taking U.S. taxpayer money for a bridge to nowhere, slapping a windfall profits tax on corporations, and then writing tax rebate checks to citizens of one specific state.

    Oh...

Socialism involves collective ownership, not just redistribution of wealth. As in, for example, the government owning part or all of major industries such as banks. :)

    Palin Logic 101:

Banks being backed and supported by an injection of state funds is NOT socialist,

    Proposition 2.

I used to be a Democrat because my parents and town leaders made me be one; then, suddenly, I became a man. Having learned to stand on my own two feet, and not on the backs of others, who work hard. Unafraid to protect my countrymen with my life, if they need. And, I do not require others to do what I do, simply, they can follow me if they choose. So, after my decades- long journey in the United States Navy, I must say that I admire the willingness of George Bush to continue to stand in that terrible office of United States President, and, I cannot understand why Sarah Palin and John McCain want to dive into that horrible position: They know what they are getting into, where Mr. Obama has absolutely no idea. So, for the heroes: I am supporting Sarah and John for their courage before the storm. May the pieces of my body, left on the shores of many countries, grow new life from the soil they have made.

Everytime the Republicans run into difficulty on the campaign trail they resort to using fear buzz words in order to try and fool the American people into believing that the Republican Party is better for our country. Words like socialism and terrorist. Well I have news for the Republican Party, it isn't going to work this time. Mainstream Americans are very tired of the politics of division, hate and fear. They are tired of the religious right trying to force their way of life and belief down the throats of the rest of us. If you are not for the Republicans and their disasterous policies of the past eight years that somehow makes you unpatriotic and evil. The more desperate they become the more they attack and spout their nonsense. Well the writing is on the wall for the Republican Party and those who would continue the disaster that has dragged down our economy, our standing in the world and our hopes for the future. The Republicans are the disease and Obama/Biden is the cure.

It shouldn't matter which party someone supports–the thought of Sarah Palin being within 1,000 heartbeats of the presidency, let alone a single heartbeat, should scare the living daylights out of every American. As a former independent, it's the one single move by McCain that led me to vote for Obama. Such a bad judgment call on his part. And I'm sure glad individuals of the caliber of Colin Powell agree with me!

There is no way Americans will elect him POTUS until they feel they know him better through unfettered interviews with NBC, CNN, PBS, etc.

Main point is Dems are seizing a comment and blowing it out of proportion – this does not indicate the kind of leadership (a lack of) that is needed now.

So from her logic, Reagan was a socialist because he had the same tax rate. Let's remind anyone that the term socialist applies to someone who believes the means of production belong to the state. Obama is far from it. By the way, TAX is spreading the wealth. This is the core idea of taxes. You take the wealth and you divide it in order to have a society that functions properly. I can not believe the amount of idiocies you can read on those blogs these days.

It's laughable that Palin would call Obama's tax plan, "socialist." It is no more socialist than the Bush tax plan her ticket supports. Each would weight the tax burden toward a specific segment of the population in order to drive economic growth.

In the McCain/Palin/Bush world, when businesses and the wealthy get more, they invest in businesses and hire more people. In truth, they invest in stocks and move businesses overseas.

In the Obama/Biden world, when lower income people get more, they are able to buy more and thus encourage businesses to compete for their dollars.

Amazing how many Obama supporters are in every forum and very little about people against Obama. CNN has really stooped to a new low. Do you really believe Obama has a plan? Every time he puts out a plan there are so many clarifications that you do not know what the real plan is. By the way, the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, and numerous Internet Sites ALL stated Obama's "tax credit/fee" plans are socialist. He is so far to the left that I do not understand why the press is giving him a free ride. When Joe the Plumber asks a question that puts Obama in a bad light, he personally attacks the person. Is this the kind of "cool and level" headed person we are suppose to have as President? Obama has run the dirtiest smear campaign ever, it is just that the news media is protecting Obama and not asking him any difficult questions. Disgusting how CNN has turned to yellow journalism. I think she sees the ship sinking – she's trying to keep her own political career from going down with it. When will the McCain campaign stop distorting the facts? Obama's tax plan does not take money away from the small businesses. The exact opposite is true. They WILL GET a tax break. Independent studies have shown that 98% of small business in America make less than $250K, which is the ceiling set for tax breaks under the Obama plan. Everyone wins when you build the economy from the ground up. Small business specifically benefit when everyone has a little bit of extra money to spend in addition to their own tax savings. Last time I checked, this was defined as economics, NOT socialism.

–"Taking more from a small business or small business owners or from a hard working family and then redistributing that money according to a politician’s priorities. There are hints of socialism in there."–

Is she saying that people wh earn less than $250k are not hard working? Does she know that the vast majority of small businesses make less than $250k?

Does she really think that government taking an ownership stake in private firms, in order to protect anyone (banks, small businesses, home owners) from failures of free markets, amounts to anything but socialism?

Ms. Palin is right on two counts:

    1. Robocalls are irritating.

    2. Taxing the so-called "rich" to give to the so-called "poor" is socialism.

Once upon a time, we had freedom in America. But, bit by bit, we've surrendered that freedom to people like Obama who promise to "take care of us." Abdicating responsibility for ourselves necessarily implies surrendering our freedoms as well.

    Alas, McCain-stein's monster Speaks!

First, her philosophy contradicts herself. Using taxpayers money to "shore up the housing and credit markets" for small businesses is NOT Socialism, however taxing those same small businesses along with big businesses (which somehow don't get mentioned) that make over $250,000/year IS Socialism. Interesting.

Second, this sudden availability to Gov. Palin is too little too late. Had they allowed us to get to know her earlier, perhaps the campaign would've had a better chance of winning. Their use of her to incite lynch-mob type reactions from crowds towards Obama has turned many people off, most of all the Independents they've been trying to win over.

Well, she is trying to distance herself from the John McCain camp and looking forward to her future in 2012.

Socialism has arrived in America already when the Govt decided to use tax money to bail out the private sector. It is the kind of bank nationalisation happened in socialist countries. And the funny thing is it is brought in to America by a Republican President.

She should first blame her republican President for bringing socialism in to america before pointing her fingers at Sen. Obama.

If the decision to funnel tax money in to the failing institutions was right to save the economy, Obamas plan to funnel money in to the infrastructure to create jobs is also right.

  131. Just the facts

Socialism is about government control of the means of production (initially proposed as a transition to communism where 'the people' would be in control). Modern democracies have always redistributed wealth (some type of proportional tax dependent on income) – there is nothing remotely socialist about it. Palin/ McCain either don't understand these 101-course-level truths (Palin probably), or are being completely disingenuous about it (McCain most likely). Either way – pretty desperate stuff, and not remotely credible.

It appears this entire campaign can be reduced to a single equation:

    McCain + Palin = McCarthyism

Since the republicans can't get their way, they are playing the fear, hate , racial, and socialist cards. At this point, it seems the Republicans have nothing to lose. They've thrown the kitchen sink, and Obama is still standing strong. Now the Republicans are throwing away their honor, reputation, and respectability (what little they may have left).

It is people like you and the rethugs that have ruined this country. Powell gave an extremely well thought out speech of why he couldn't in good conscience vote for mccain. I am a WHITE woman and PROUDLY support Barack Obama!

I smell someone who sees her impending defeat and is starting to worry about not only losing this election, but getting recalled as Governor back home. We may see more face-saving in the days to come. I'd expect McCain to follow suit, and start blaming everything on the nameless evil "higher-ups" at the RNC.

It is a last ditch effort by McCain, nothing else is working for him......he can't win on the issues so he spends his time trashing Sen Obama.
America is looking for someone who can get this country back on track and right now that is Sen Obama.......McCain has made himself look so stupid with way he has run his campaign.
We don't need NASTY in the White House we need NEW......yes, a new fresh face with new ideas and someone who will restore America's standing in the world.

    Linda,

I have heard some bizarre comments by McCain, Palin, and the rest of the Republican party, but yours takes the cake. You want Sen. Obama to give the donated money to the people? Are you kidding me? So, what about McCain and Palin? I see, since you want a "has been" and a "never was" to win, they don't fall under the same guidelines. Individuals who are struggling are donating because they know they have a much better chance at economic survival with Obama. You didn't breed, did you?

We only pay taxes on our net earnings, not gross earnings. I would love to have net earnings of $250,000. Most small businesses would have to take in over one to 2 million to net $250,000.

Why are all of the supposedly "Christians" whining over spreading the wealth? Are we not our brothers' keeper? Don't you learn in Sunday school to give to the poor? They cloak themselves in Christianity, yet behave in such selfish ways.

I am disgusted with all of these sanctimonious Republicans.

What a piece of work these people are. And the idiots who said Obama's donations should be used to help people stay in their homes, what did you expect him to fight an election with? The taxpayers gave McCain $84 million but volunteered to give Obama more to win so he could enact programs to keep people in their homes. Besides if he took the donations and used it for that then it would violate election law and you McCain shills would call it socialism.

If you think it's fair that Obama should spend his money on helping the less fortunate, but not McCain because he has less money, then I'd like to know what your problem with Obama's tax plan is, because it amounts to the same thing. It's sad and perhaps difficult to watch the McCain Palin ticket go down in flames. You will notice that the lower they sink the more strident and loud they become complaining that CNN is giving Obama a free ride. Not so! CNN is reporting the facts just as always. For example I don't see Lou Dobbs giving Obama a free ride. Campbell Brown is not always positive about Obama either.

    So as to the McCain/Palin........HA

Second of all... She said its not always her and McCains choice its up the the Brases of the party that make alot of their decisions!!

OBAMA runs his own campaign.. upper Dems dont run it. Its done HIS way. Its obvious by the way it hasnt been a typical smear campaign on his side like the Republican side. Obamas campaign is so DIFFERENT than a election campaign used to be. There are so many new ideas and ways they are reaching people... INternet, email, cell phone text.

CNN – you definately "stack the deck" for Obama, shameful. There is NO DOUBT you sensor all your answers to be "Pro Obama" providing the "illusion" that that is how all America thinks. Joke. CNN and Obama have a lot in common – dishonesty and a desire to be self-fullfilling.

"Hints of socialism"? So is our constitutional right to education... What an idiot she is. To bring accusations of socialistic ideology up against someone in America, one must be prepared to have more facts than a few words taken out of context. Such accusations can not appear 2 weeks prior to presidential elections. There has to be a serious proven history behind it. If someone would have done it against me I would have taken that person to a court of law for false accusations of treason.
    2. GOP campaign is so low, it stinks... They grab any rotten bone they can dig and let the pit bull off the leash. The pit bull growls and drools all over it until a few cavemen sense the smell of rot and crawl out of their holes to perform some ritual dancing and yell words they don't understand. GOP better be careful with terrorism accusations too – wittisisms like "No, he is not an Arab, he is a decent man", or supporting implications of all "Husseins" being terrorists by definition result in BREEDING terrorists all over the world, turning more and more people and nations against us. The world is watching our elections closely, and the world is getting really scared. There are many "undecided voters" out there, and we better have them as decided American allies. We bred enough terrorists in Iraq already.

We all remember who appealed to the most ignorant part of population throughout modern history.

In my mind I am still trying to separate a dignified soldier from a leader of this dirty dancing, and retain my respect for soldier and POW John McCain... How sad....

I listened to General Powell, and I commend him for actually speaking up and reminding people that these attacks from McCain and Palin, accusing Senator Obama of being a terrorist, a treasonist, etc., are going out over the AlZegera (sp) airwaves and doing a lot of harm to our country. Obama's money came from US not from the GOVERNMENT. McCain takes Welfare money to run his campaign and just like Bush he is NOT spending it wisely.

It's funny how a simple word such as "socialism" continues to strike a fear in Americans. Rather than looking beyond what has historically been done in health care and banking, it seems much easier to spread fear in the population. We as a society need to look beyond how government has traditionally worked and evolve as a people, because how things are going has been proven NOT to work for all people, but for the chosen few. "Socialism" is a broad brush that scares the American people into submission. A huge distraction that has also historically worked. I hope that America can learn to NOT let the old scare tactics of the past prevent them from moving into the future.

I will be so glad when this election is over...I really wonder What Gov Palin is thinking. Her snappy remarks and so call humor is sickening..... She is spewing hate.....Sad to say no one is bashing her when they say she seem silly or brain less, because she is acting that way.

Now she is in diagreement with the people running John McSames campaign. I'll bet they are just wringing there hands asking how they can get her to go away. Too late now guys. You let your confused candidate pick from his gut, and this is what you got. A brainless beauty queen. Yah, sort of like Cindy McSame. Huh!

Here's what's going to happen. When the Bush tax plan expires President Obama does not plan to renew it. This is why people making 250k a year will pay more. McCain wants to extend the Bush cuts because they benefit people and corporations earning 250k or more.

McCain/Palin have no real plan to help American so they lie.

Mccain made a huge mistake by choosing Palin as a running mate. She is an insult to Women, at least where I come from.. Does Mccain think that all women are this dumb. It tells me a lot about what he thinks of women in general. Mccain is a very smart Man or used to be. He just doesn't have what he did the last he ran. They say when you age the mind is the first to go. We need the rest of the world to respect the USA once again. We need leadership, we need honor – we need to be proud once again. We don't need SNL for the next 4 years.

This term Socialism that is the new buz word for the McCain campaign is just so bogus. "Oh my the Democrats are going to take your money and redistribute it in a way you don't approve!" Do people even stop to think that at this moment in time, in fact forever, we have not ever had any control over how the government chooses to spend our taxes? I might be wrong but I would like anyone who has been able to dictate to the government how to spend the taxes, please let me know how you did that. I'm sure a lot of us would love to know!!!!

any small business owner who declares his company makes $250,000 or more needs a new accountant to help him figure out how to reduce his taxes. You would have to be stupid not to figure that out.

Sarah Palin could never figure that out.

McCain's health insurance program will eliminate any person with a pre-existing condition AND add 14% in extra taxes for any health insurance premiums paid for by the company you work for.

Palin, of course, could not define socialism. She could not explain whether government ownership of banks and credit is or is not socialism. She could not explain the difference between socialism, communism, corporatism, and fascism. She could not, I speculate, list three books that she has read this year. This lady is dangerous: pretty, articulate, and she actually thinks she knows what she's talking about. We need to be sure that she gets sent back where she came from.

So dangerous, so misleading and so untrue. Palin is a disgrace to this country in my opinion, no credentials to run for the party. What a sad state of affairs the Republican party has chosen, trying anything to save their last breath. This is supposed to be a free country, so if its free, stop the phone calls and spreading of lies and trying to start an all out riot of hatred. Why do you think the media is shoving Palin in our faces?... is very simple, we're all fascinated with public figures making fools out of them selves, and Palin is a master at that. Those Palin moments are priceless and will last for a lifetime. I'm sure CNN won't post this comment because is showing the real reason we hear so much about her.

So we still have people who still think that after 20 months of interviews, investigations, 30 debates, more interviews, and fact checking, that Obama is "unknown" and they can't vote for him, but those same people are comfortable voting for a woman who merely claims to be ready to be President. That same woman is facing ethics charges in Alaska, has not been on any credible news show(Fox is not), won't take questions from reporters, has been in one national debate in which she didn't answer one asked question, allows her husband access to government emails, to sit in on personnel meetings, advise her, and we are supposed to just embrace her because McCain, who met her twice, says she's legit? If that is the Republican logic, please elect Obama! Todd Palin with top-level security clearance and the nuclear codes, terrifies me.

Why has she not done Meet the Press? Why has she not done ANY interview that would allow her to speak for herself and be asked questions she should know the answer too? Why do you think she is qualified to be President and can't even talk for herself? The only shot they have at winning this election is letting her go unscripted and either sink or swim! If it proves shes not ready then so be it.....but they will loose this election if she is not interviewd by tough questions that Obama, Biden and McCain have all been through! Are you women voting for Palin out there in la la land afraid of her answers? Do you love her so much that you are willing to accept any stooge to sit in the oval office? To aneel
"unfair to take money from a hard working person and give to drug using/beer drinking/couch potatoes". Who taught you those lines? You might try thinking some, for a change. Senator Obama is NOT spreading the wealth around, as your mentors keep repeating. He DOES want to redistribute some of the money of those who earn in the top brackets. And money is necessary and it usually does not grow on trees.

It seems you consider yourself a hard working person, who doesn't drink beer, use drugs or watch TV. If you also have a business and employees, then you'll probably get the point of having more physically apt workers, who don't miss work often. Also of having better roads and public transportation so everybody can get to work sooner and your products get to their destination more cheaply.

If you don't have a business you'd still need to make more than $200,000 individually, after all the allowed deductions. And then you'd only be taxed on the amount that EXCEEDS the $200,000 limit.

If you're still worried, then you are making a lot of money and are not very christian (I guess you think Christ is a socialist even worse than Obama). I suggest you drink some beer once in a while and watch some TV.

I really believe there are enough smart people in the US that would vote for the choice that is best for our country. It's very hard to believe anything that Palin is saying (given that she's even changed her accent just for this campaign). Why would they think we'd want to hear a phony? I know a lot of people who were either 1) going to vote for McCain or 2) were undecided until McCain picked Palin. A very odd choice, but they still gave her a chance. She has proven time and again that she is not the right choice. Now they are voting for Obama (or more accurately, voting against McCain/Palin). These are definitely very interesting times for America. Let's see what we do!

When is the public going to understand that businesses are taxed on profits, which are by definition what is left over after expenses and salaries are paid. So even if the guy earning more than a quarter of a million dollars has to pay a little more tax, there is no reason for that to impact his business operations. My husband earns roughly that amount in most years – and his tax rate is noticeably higher than Cindy McCain's- $4.2 million earned, $1.1 million taxes paid. You go do the math. And despite the cool license plate, she doesn't actually work for that money.

If they can't lead their party now, we can't expect any difference later. So I guess we WILL just see 4 more years of the same tired platform.

Either they are completely lying and insulting our intelligence when they claim that they abhor their own tactics, but allow them anyway, or they are lying and insulting our intelligence when claiming to mavericks for change.

For all you that think Obama's plan is to help alcoholics and lazy people, your the epitome of what is wrong with US, there are 100's of 1000's family out there that are not making it. People who work hard every day who can't afford the "luxury" of buying gas and nutritious foods. People who if they invest in a 401K can't afford a college fund for their children. Single mothers working 3 jobs. Young married couples who will have to wait til their mid to late 30's just to have to consider having children. Hard working men who pound the pavement every day looking for even part time work after their multi billion dollar companies shipped their jobs to India (so much for providing tax breaks to increase jobs, how about a fine or penalty for every job you ship over seas??)

I would be very upset if he turned around and used that money for any other purpose that what I intended it for. Is this your first election? It takes a lot of money to run a campaign, and just because Obama has received record amounts from the small donors like me, it doesn't make his responsiblity of campaigning any different than any of the others. Sarah Palin is a joke. Hardcore consertatives are even turning against her include Colen Powell who ripped her apart yesterday for one of his reasons as supporting Senator Obama for president. Palin loves those robocalls. Just like in Alaska, Palin takes credit for everything that works well and blames others for the things that don't work. That's not leadership, that's just being a fraud who can't come up with their own ideas and has to steal or blame others depending on the outcome.

Palin does not understand politics. It is one thing for a politician to distance him/herself from their party or their President. But the VP's job is one of absolute loyalty to the President. She could have signaled her displeasure with robocalls by simply saying that she doesn't make those decisions, without going so far as to say that she would have made a different decision. The campaign will have to sequester her again. After the election, I wonder how long it will be before McCain throws her under a bus and admits that picking her was a mistake. If Palin runs in 2012, I doubt she'll even get McCain's endorsement.

The average campaign contribution to Barack Obama was $87....oh yes, Linda, that truly is an obcene amount of money!

Personally, I gave a total of $30. Because I believe in Barack Obama, and that's all I can afford.

Don't tell me that I don't have the right to contribute to my candidate, or that he shouldn't spend my money working to win over voters.

Would Gov Palin answer a question from Joe the Plumber at a rally? Or from Janet the Community Organizer? Would she be willing to address what she sees as the "major" tenets of socialism? Is McCain's tax plan socialistic too, since it also redistributes wealth? What is tithing?

Colin Powell should get a spot in Obama's administration .. cleaning bed pans at Walter Reed and working with the 10s of thousands soldiers that returned with only part of their body or brain that he is responsible for by lying to the world about Iraq. Who is heading McCain's transition team?

William Timmons, the Washington lobbyist who John McCain has named to head his presidential transition team, aided an influence effort on behalf of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein to ease international sanctions against his regime.

Someone said that McCain's biggest mistake was choosing Sarah Palin, I beg to differ. THE REPUBLICAN PARTY's BIGGEST MISTAKE was to let John McCain represent thier party when they had Romney and Huckabe as sound and reasonable choices.

I heard on MSNBC that Palin will be looking for a road to the White House in the future. This is why she's starting NOW TO DISTANCE HERSELF FROM McCAIN...Wonder what he thinks about all her recent comments about the course of the campaign in the last two weeks? Do we have a divide already between McCain and his running mate. They were never a pair for the Republican Ticket.

OBAMA and BIDEN is the ticket to vote for a united America! Go back and read or listen to General Powell's comments and then go to Michael Smerconish's website and read his Sunday editorial....Neither man had consulted the other; yet they have reached the same conclusion: It is OBAMA's time! It is our time! It is TIME FOR CHANGE!!!!!!!!!

Linda - Obama legally MUST use the money given to his campaign for his campaign. He CAN'T turn around and take the money people donated to him for some pet cause, no matter how worthy. That would be misdirecting funds - in short, fraud.

I and all of my WASP friends and family members who have donated our $10-100 appreciate that Obama's campaign is using our donations wisely... which, by the way, means challenging McCain on issues, but NOT wasting much time on ad hominem attacks. (If you don't know what that is, Google it... it's a useful term to know when sifting through political BS!)

One thing about Obama. I've studied too much rhetoric to be fooled by oratory, but if he can run the U.S. half as effectively as he's run his campaign, we'll be in good hands.

Too little too late. When someone as respected as Colin Powell goes on national tv and states that your selection is one of the reasons he will not vote for McCain, it says a lot about your selection. One of the biggest mistakes he made in his campaign is showing how little he thinks of the US to even think about leaving you in charge if something should happen to him if elected. Intelligent people see through his victory at any cost policy. What bothers me the most about you is how easily a lie rolls off your lips. By the way, Alaska did find you were unethical and abused your power has that sunk in yet???Also, your statements at your rallies to me violate the 1st amendment under fighting words and slander as do your robocalls. You didnt even have the common sense to decry "terrorist " "traitor" "kill him" unless maybe that is what you and John are hoping someone will do. The sad thing is that most of the people posting here are the people sitting at home doing nothing but collecting from the government. These are the same people that don't feel they should have to work for there money and that Obama's idea of share the wealth means that they should have money and things and not have to work for it. God Forbid you have to work for something and make your way in life. No it is easier to ask for help and ask for breaks and not work for what you have. People it is a sad day when you depend on the gorvernment to get everyone to share the wealth. McCain is for everyone and is trying to show us that we can have it all if we are willing to work for it. Why is that so hard to understand. Obama is just a man who is taking advantage of a situation. You really think he will make a change in the next four years? If you do you are a fool. At least with McCain things have a chance for getting better. People need to realize it is not the government that needs to fix this it is us. The government is just a small part of it. Americans need to get off there butts and stop expecting everything for free.

Redistubution of wealth, thats called taxes, duh!

For goodness sakes folks, these foolish accusations of "That one is a socialist" are weak attempts to distract voters from the facts. JOSH,

You're right. I am one of those people living paycheck-to-paycheck, I sent $25 in August and bought a $5 magnet. In September I bought about $58 worth of T-shirts and a yard sign. Even when you buy merchandise it is counted as a donation. Many of us are proud to wear Obama items, the best place to buy is from the man himself.

I resent McCain getting on TV and saying that something "fishy" is going on in Obama's campaign, because of all of this money Obama is getting. I hope they do investigate, what they will find is that most of us would be proud to show/prove that we sent money to the campaign. Cannot stand it any longer: Australians, like many around the world, will be directly affected by this choice to which we cannot contribute. Most of the world is torn between mockery and terror by Ms Moose-slaughterer - but only Americans have the power to stop her.

Maybe you can all begin by remembering this simple history:

    - taking from the well-off to support the poor - invented about 3900 yrs ago and present in Code of Hammurabi and the Bible (and the US Constitution);

    - 'socialism' - invented about 200 yrs ago by rich English Christians like Robert Owen

Both ideas have connections with Christianity, but Obama's taxation principles began at least 3500 years before the word 'socialism' even existed.

Someone who cannot grasp this should not be allowed anywhere inside the Washington DC Beltway! Please remember you are voting for the whole world this year.

McCain – Palin = The same good old boy network that profits from war and oil and puts our country at great risk for continuing to enlist the most unqualified people from their ranks. A war monger and air head, maybe that is who we are as a people, or at least half of us according to polls.

Although I have already voted for Obama/Biden (early voting in my state), I have tried all along to at least have some respect for the Republicans running. Years ago, I respected McCain, but that is lost – guess I didn't "know" him as well then. When Palin came on the scene, I thought that at least this would be another smart female to represent women in general. Wrong!!! She showed me right away that she's just a flirty, selfish, air-head who would do anything to try to get what she wants. What an insult!! If McCain thought she was a Hillary replacement, I don't know where in the world he got the idea that an intelligent, thoughtful, experienced person could be replaced by a bar-fly type with good legs. Socialism, why must Americans listen to someone using this word without learning what it (socialism) is. During the depression, President Roosevelt introduced many "social" programs to get America back on it's feet. Because of the lack of governement, we had a depression. That is why his cousin, President Teddy Roosevelt, was called the great trust-buster. He regulated many businesses in the early 20th century and crunch down on companies that may have the potential of becoming a monopoly. As Americans we need to start to research and get the facts ourselves and stop believing everything we hear.

As for the endorsement of Gen. Powell, this was a well though out enorsement, Anyone who watched it on Meet the Press would have notice how hard it was to go against his party and his friend to do what he thinks is best for the country. This was not because Sen Obama is an African-American, this is about who he thinks is best for the country. If people want to believe it was about race, one could pose the question about Joe Lebierman on his decision to back Sen McCain. Mr. Lebierman was a Democrat (VP Nom for the Dems in 2000) and he backed a GOP for president. He is white, does that mean he backed McCain because McCain was white? I believe he backed McCain because he believed McCain was the best man for the job. We need to stop using racism as an excuse. Gen. Powell has a right to choose who he wants to vote for like every other American.

Gov Palin has gone against her party on numerous occasions. If your party is doing something you don't like, voice it to your party, not to the world. The GOP's has not connected with the independent voter. I am an idependent voter and I can't see myself voting for the GOP.

So, since I received 12 such e-mails this past week (from friends and family) I decided to put a stop to it. I hit the reply button (which returned my message to all who had received the e-mail) and my reply was a simple on..."PLEASE, don't forward this type of Garbage to me...save your petty politics for yourself and your other like minded friends."...and everyone got my message. What matters about how we spend our money is that, whether we spend as individuals, corparations, or as a nation, we invest that money in projects that produce a return. We often spend on major infrastructure projects as a nation, and those large projects have brought us benefits such as hydroelectric power and the Interstate highway system.

Ask yourself: "Is it wise to coms together as a people to support next-generation energy?" If it's wise, should we be afraid to proceed because some fool cries: "Socialist!, Outcast! Unclean!"

Obama is a socialist? Obama wants to redistribute the wealth? Come on!

It is McCain who wants to downgrade mortgages on millions of homes. Who is going to suffer? Taxpayers! And poor retirees who have their money invested in the banks that bought these toxic mortgages. Once the mortgages are downgraded these banks will not be able to pay dividends many people depend on. What McCain is proposing is a nightmare scenario and no one knows where it is going to end. Wish CNN did talk about ‘McCain’s socialism’.

First of all, Palin is wrong about Obama's policies being socialist. It is merely a progressive tax system – something we already have but whose effectivness has been blunted by the Bush tax cuts – something John McCain now supports.

Secondly, does it seem to anyone else that Palin seems to have given up on this race and is setting the stage for 2012 or 2016? What with the Michigan comments and now the robocalls (which are annoying), she seems less concerned about helping John McCain than with helping her chances in 4 or 8 years.

As a Canadian I am constantly astounded by the vitirol in the personal commentary (and in the media). The Republican ticket is certainly unpolished and in many ways questionable. As for smarts which VP candidate said Roosevelt often spoke to the nation, during the depression, on television? If Palin had said that what would be the reaction? Media free ride – looking from the outside there is no doubt. Your choice seems to be between a smooth, polished (and slick) politician who says his policies are now different from his entire voting record and on the other side a couple of redneck hicks who can't impress anyone.

This is laughable. The words came out of her mouth, and the entire strategy backfired. They are back pedaling the situation and it is much too late to lie and back out of it.

The Republican Party is nothing but a bunch of Crooks just like Nixon, he just got caught. I was a republican/independent up to this point in politics; I am now a independent/democrat thanks to:

-Bush / Cheney and their lies (they called it bad intelligence) to get us into Iraq. Afghanistan is justifiable for the terrorist camps they had there. The reason we have not found Bin-Laden…Republicans could not justify being in Iraq. Once he is found the American public would have closure on a tragedy that affected us all- 9/11. And lets start not having any politicians except the President of the Untied States speak during the remembrance of this event. And lets start use it to remember our dead, not to use it as a scare tactic for political reasons as the Republicans have been doing since that day.

-Thanks to the H1B visa, this allows foreign visa workers without a green card to work our American jobs (engineering and IT in general). I am now a unemployed IT worker and getting ready to los my house.
These companies used contract job shops to supply the H-1B replacements. The companies could claim they did not apply for H-1B visas and the job shops could claim they had not fired any U.S. workers. Thus, the employer could openly and legally replace their U.S. workforce with H-1B workers. TRW is a fine example of this using a company called Satyam (the Indian Parent). The pay check came from NJ but the HR was in Indian.

Palen IS the worst choice the Republican Party could have convinced John McCain to put in place. They wanted to be historic, while putting the country in the rearview mirror.

We as a public have a responsibility. Hold our Politicians’ to their words.

You do robocalls and TV adds because it reaches a large number of people in a short amount of time, and while not everyone pays attention, there are the undecided voters who will listen to an add or a phone call that might sway their vote.

I am against these robo calls that McCain is doing. . They did not think about an innocent child who is home alone after school. The child answer the call and hear this mess. It will cause the child to be scared.

The parent do everything they can teach a child when they are home alone after school not to answer the door because the parent have a key. These tactics reek of desperation, and they are backfiring, as they're helping push people like Powell to endorse Obama. When this is the best attack you've got, you know you're in trouble. Of course, who can blame them for trying to leverage cheap, debunked scare tactics again...

It's nice to finally have something to agree with Palin on. The robocalls are too much, from either campaign. The odds of an automated call changing a vote to be for you never out weighs the risk of annoying someone into voting for the other guy.

As for Socialism, I think I'll be brave enough to not hide under my bed this time. ;-) You can mock Obama's plans as Socialism all you want. You can point to Canada and the UK's Health Plans as Socalist ideas that Obama is aiming for. But why is it that report after report show that the countries with "Socialized" Medical Care have better medical support for their citizens. We're at the bottom of all the lists. The worst Industrialized Nation for Education, Health Care, Environment, Infant and Birth Mother mortality, etc. Oh sure, we have the best Medicine in the world for the 5% who can afford it. But what about the other 95%? "Socialized" Medicine is a risk I'm willing to take. Our Heath Care rankings have no where to go but up.

Linda, people like me decided to support Obama with my monthly small donation as many others have. McCain made a choice to use government tax dollars for his campaigne. So if, what you are saying about Obama then why is it that McCain is using government funds is okay.

In the last 6 days I've gotten 4 RoboCalls from the RNC. One was recorded by Palin herself to "invite" me to hear her speak locally. Dealing with a family member having health problems and keep running to the phone for this garage. There should be a do no call list for this crap. Now McCain himself is coming.... time for more crap calls.

  390. That one is Karl Marxs friend too

    One more thing about Palin-

Her debate broke records in viewership (no way people were watching for Biden)
Her convention speech broke records in viewership
Her Sat night live was the most watched in 14 years.
She has a 80% approval rating in Alaska.
There are more that want to see her than not.

    She is a formidable opponent.

Linda. I am an unemployed IT worker who is possibly going to loose his house. I donated to the Obama campaign 25 dollars which I could not really afford. This middle aged white, former U.S. Marine war vet, Former Republican did so because he believes in Mr. Obama’s message. We need change and we need change now. And this is my first time in my 28 years of voting eligibility to donate to any campaign.

Lets take the 10 billion a month and get Americans back on track.

I can't believe this. This type of tactic puts Obama and his family at an even higher risk of danger. What if her family were being targeted for being secessionist???? And they were being threatened because now, the American people believe that they dont want to be Americans anymore. I pray for her...but I pray more for the safety of Obama's family who are they actual victims.

Just voted in Florida- lines around the corner. Lots of young people and many of them wearing Obama t-shirts.

Palin is just looking forward – looser. Hopefully Nov 5, we'll be waving bye-bye to her and the "first dude." & family.

All I know is if Barack gets elected I can quit my job. Why work for a living when I can sit back and let the socialist take money from the rich and give it to me.

Remember the cold war?? Obama will turn this country into the old USSR, and as I recall their system didn't work too well.

Robocalls, my god, I hang up om everyone I get fron the RNC, and my Republican elected officials.

As for Colin Powell, I am glad to see he has finally cut his ties and started to speak for himself. Negativiity we do not need, solutions we do need, but if one has no solutions, no new policies all one can do is attacks those that do.

As to redistibuation of wealth, what has permitted the federal government to respond to economic downward motion in the past is federal dollars going into federal projects. But there are no federal dollars today, tax cuts to buisnesses and the upper 2% rather than fueling growth have gone right into the pockets of those that received them in the first place. Trickle down failed before and has proven itself a bigger failure this time around.

Obama should take the white house. It's seems that's the only way people will understand how much he will ruin the country. If you like european ideals so much, go live in Europe. I like my America the way it is, faults in all. People want more economic security but aren't willing to pay the price of economic opportunity. You can't have both. Obama's plans focus on splitting the pie instead of making it bigger.
Jimmy Carter was going to bring change to Washington too. How did that work out for you?

Is Sarah Palin separating herself from the McCain campaign so she can blame them for their loss and set herself up to run in 4 years? I wouldn't vote for her, but she WAS funning on SNL both in the opening and Weekend Update.

I agree that Bush has led the country down a path of difficult times with the Iraq war. However, I think that if any of you looked at what has been going on, you would see that it's the democrats and the Clinton era that's caused the bank crisis. They loosened up the credit markets to help the urbanites get approved for mortgages.

I busted my butt putting myself through college at night, working a job and running a weekend handyman business. Why should I pay for others to go to school? I served my time

"There are hints of socialism in there," says Sarah Palin about Obama's very reasonable tax plan. Did she learn about "socialism" in McCain's debate camp, or in one of the six schools she attended while finishing her bachelor's degree in communications? Taxation is not socialism. Look it up in the freakin' dictionary, people. The Republicans are using the word "socialism" as a propaganda tool. Gets the low-info voter all riled up.

I am so amazed that she is now saying that the robocalls are wrong. She is the one that started the whole thing with her comments about Obama "palling around with terrorists". It's also unreal to me that anyone is criticizing Obama's fundraising. Like a previous poster said the money has come from every day, ordinary people that believe in what he stands for and want a REAL CHANGE! If sharing the wealth and taxing those over 250k more is socialism than so is the bailout. She's is a complete and utter airhead. DANGEROUS!

Could someone please explain to me why there is such controversy in this election? For the past 8 years we have had a Republican administration that has done nothing right. This administration has been the most corrupt and self serving pack of wolves ever. "It's the economy stupid" or is it the war...or education...or the wealth gap...or loosing all of our allies...or Katrina...or healthcare...etc

To the folks who buy Palin's spew:

The more you make, the more you pay. As a result of your greater payments, people in lower tax brackets both pay less and have access to greater services (such as tax credits, affordable healthcare, Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, decent roads, national defense, etc.) That's called a "progressive income tax," because as you go higher up the income ladder, the burden (in theory) is progressively higher.

Don't like it? Do away with the tax code. I just hope you like living in an unsafe building and defending yourself and your belongings every day, since there won't be little things like police, firefighters or building code inspectors.

Also, don't call people making $250k a year "hard working" as a group. Many of them are earning that off of trust funds or other investments, not the sweat of their brow – like one Cindy McCain. A huge percentage of this group are also people like lawyers and doctors whose salaries have skyrocketed over the last 15-20 years without a demonstrable increase in their talent or work ethic. Trust me. I saw my salary more than double in 7 years, and I wasn't suddenly doing twice the work. Some people are real innovators and work hard – but many just had better options and opportunities.

I think something has gone awry with Colin Powell's reasoning ability.
Sarah Palin has more political experience than Obama and if there's any doubt about Obama's socialist leanings, please review his economic plan. If redistribution of ewealthg is not socialism, then I sure don't understand the concept.
