The two presidential rivals shook hands after their last debate as their wives looked on.

(CNN) - Sen. Barack Obama has his largest lead so far over rival Sen. John McCain, according to CNN’s latest national poll of polls.

Obama leads McCain by nine points in the poll of polls released Tuesday – 51 percent to 42 percent. Seven percent of those surveyed are unsure about their choice for president.

In Monday’s CNN’s poll of polls, Obama’s lead over McCain was seven points – 51 percent to 44 percent.

“Today’s Poll of Polls average reflects the fact that Obama has moved into a commanding position in the presidential race,” said CNN Senior Political Researcher Alan Silverleib. “Obama is either tied or ahead in all of the battleground states. The Democrats now have what may be a decisive edge in terms of voter enthusiasm and financial resources. The financial meltdown has played to Obama’s advantage. By most measurements, McCain was not able to use the debates to gain ground on Obama. And most of the campaign is now being waged in previously red states. While anything can happen in the remaining two weeks, it’s hard not to conclude that McCain’s back is against the wall.”

Tuesday’s CNN poll of polls is composed of the following six national general election surveys of likely voters: Pew (October 16-19), CNN/ORC (October 17-19), ABC/Washington Post (October 16-19), Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby (October 18-20), Gallup (October 18-20) and Diageo/Hotline (October 18-20). The poll of polls does not have a sampling error.

If we're deciding the "dork of dorks" I'd vote for the guy who names "Dancing Queen" by Abba his all time favorite song. Hint: it's not the guy leading in the poll of polls.

America wins if Obama is elected. He will include EVERYONE in our country and not divide us into real and fake America.

I'm so thrilled that we aren't letting this once in a lifetime candidate slip through our fingers.

God bless and protect Barack Obama.

Fed Up Independent   October 21st, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Obama supporters: Don't get complacent. Vote! I fully expect more dirty tricks to come out of McCain's campain engine ala Karl Rove and George Bush. Remember when Bush was running against McCain for the nomination his group spread the rumor that McCain had fathered a black child? Now some of these same operatives are in McCain's camp. It is sad how McCain has sold his soul to the devil and lost his integrity with his incessant mantra of negativity.

Dave S.   October 21st, 2008 4:31 pm ET

I think people have started to tune out McCain like the grumpy ol' man who is always cribbing......and the neighbors pitbull .. always barking.

Joe the gaffemeister can afford to make mistakes..cuz anything mccain says will look like one more of his "distractions".

Intentional or not, Obama will get a small boost out of the visit to his grandma. I bet some seniors in Florida will like that.

KateLynn   October 21st, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Excellent! The gap may get wider or narrower but speaking as someone from a swing state (Ohio), I know the state is a lot more Democratic this year, thanks to Obama's likeability compared to Sen. McGrinch and Gov. Pain.

Dork of dorks? Last I checked, Obama has never EVER brought up making a saving throw, raiding a dungeon, or how he can speak fluent elvish. So he's HARDLY the dork of dorks. However, if he could speak elvish, it would totally seal the deal with the D&D voting block.

Obama has been on point and running a brilliant campaign. McCain has been erratic, and Palin keeps digging herself deeper and deeper by voicing her opinions which differ from McCain's views.. then coming back days later stating that she's against the very thing she supported days earlier.

At this point.. anybody who truly thinks McCain can run this country better than Obama.. I have a bridge to sell you.. and this bridge doesn't go to nowhere.. it goes straight to Fantasy Land.

At this point.. the only vote McCain's getting is the die hard republican and the racist vote.. the rest of America can see that Obama is by far the better candidate.

I am for pro-Obama, and obviously glad that he "appears" to have momentum on the national level.

But I still have a problem with Polls. Newsflash, every poll to some extent has a degree of "sampling error". All they represent are just a very small sampling of the entire population. They do not take into account a growing segment of "newly registered voters". Nor do they accurately capture a complete cross section of America.

CNN, I am not sure how noone else has challenged you on your claim of "0 sampling error" in your Poll of Polls.

Steve Perzan   October 21st, 2008 4:28 pm ET

I like Obama and hope that our Nation does Vote for a Change. We all know the only polls that count are the ones on November 2. Let's hope it is a fair and just election with people voting issues first - that really is putting Country First and personalities second.

Sometimes you've got to do what's best for your country, not your pride.

Get it through your very thick pride. Obama is the one and only choice
for the future of America.

Has the last 8 years not sent the message loud and clear ?

Democrats and Republicans must join together and vote for the only choice there is for President and Vice President. God forbid Palin ever been came President ! You don't want to see the fall of the American Empire, do you ?

Be smart, vote for your future and your children's future.
Obama | Biden !

Matt   October 21st, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Obama leads in the polls because the press would rather bring up Cindy McCains drug abuse then Barack Obama's. They would rather avoid the truth of his lack of character, credibility, and accomplishments then mention all of his mistakes.

I wonder if a white guy who did drugs as a young adult, went to church with racists and worked with terrorists. Had little to no accomplishments besides writing two books about himself. One of which was full of racist remarks that have since been edited out. Had not completed even one term as a Senator and had a record of voting present rather than taking a stand and thinks the same goventment that can not deliver mail should handle your health care. And should spread the wealth of people who earned money to those that have their hands out. I wonder if that guy would be so high in the polls as well?

I guess if no one bothered to report about their character flaws they would.

paulie_nj   October 21st, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Here's how McCain's tax credit would work when referring to how he will tax your employer's health care benfit:

Your a family earning $80,000 per year. Your employer provides a $12,000 health insurance plan. Your family would pay taxes on their $12,000 employer-provided health benefit, resulting in owing $3,000 more in taxes if they fall into the 25% tax bracket. Here's what Obama leaves out when hitting McCain on this: McCain is providing the family with a $5,000 tax credit to offset any new tax liability. So in the above example the family would pay an addt'l $3,000 in taxes but will have $2,000 left over to put in their pockets, and that's $1,000 more than the $1,000 tax cut ( or welfare check ) that Obama is proposing. So the family either uses the tax credit to offset employer-provided health care benefit taxes or to go out and find their own policy.

Chris   October 21st, 2008 4:27 pm ET

People know why this economy is messed up. From a political party point, they both are liable. The trouble for the Republicians is that they can't disconnect truly free capital markets from "capital gains tax breaks" Even with 8+ years of reduced capital gains tax, the jobs were still exported to other countries because of the lower wage scale.
Voters understand more than what some politicans have given them credit for.

McCain/Palin don't offer any true solutions just attacks or attacks on solutions that Sen. Obama has given. The country is starting to really get the true picture of what going on and thus Sen. Obama's lead continues to increase. I would like to see a strong message given to McCain/Palin in the form of a huge Obama /Biden Victory to show how much we(THE USA) disapprove of the type of Campaign McCain/Palin has run.

Obama: Future
McCain: Yesterday

What more can I say?

Eight is enough ...   October 21st, 2008 4:19 pm ET

So – after watching the Republicans steal the last two elections ... 2000 by out-and-out repudiation of the constitution and 2004 through manipulating the Ohio election system ... I am still scared that McCain and Caribou Barbie will win

I have to believe the American public will do the right thing – but not sure what other tricks McCain and company have up their sleeves

So let's not be complacent – get out the vote and do EVERYTHING you can to ensure folks vote for Barack – our children's future depends on it as does the future of the world ...

junie   October 21st, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Finally some reality from CNN. Obama has to hold PA and win Colorado and it is over. Currently he is winning both comfortably.

He doesn't need Ohio or Florida or NC or Virginia or Indiana or Missouri or Nevada. He is holding all Kerry's states and has included NM and Iowa which puts him at 268 with over 100 toss-up electoral votes in play in states he is either tied or leading.

The margin of victory will be decided based on home many of the 7 aformentioned states he wins.

I know your rating matter, but just be straight and stop with the polls are tightening stories and give us the truth.

Like the Emperor and Darth Vader before them, the Republicans are done.

Obama/Biden – vote early

Chi4Obama   October 21st, 2008 4:18 pm ET

Well all this means is that we will hear more of a "gutter" political strategy from John McCain. It's obvious the GOP can't win on issues, which is why the only thing they have left are things like name calling, and race baiting.

Get ready to hear more from the GOP about A.C.O.R.N, Bill Ayers, Obama's socialist policies, and of course Rev. Wright over the next 2 weeks. They will use code words like "Dangerous", "Terrorist", and "unpatriotic" when making reference to Obama.

Too bad it won't work. Short of the McCain camp stealing the election, they are pretty much a sinking ship.

IT IS BECAUSE MCCAINPALIN WANT TO WIN FOR MCCAIN/PALIN, AND OBAMA WANTS TO WIN FOR THE PEOPLE. WHO IN THERE RIGHT MIND COULD VOTE FOR MCCAIN AFTER HIS DECISION TO HAVE PALIN AS A VP. WHAT A JOKE!!

FactCheck   October 21st, 2008 4:18 pm ET

John McCain, you have lost the race. For the sake of your legacy and for the sake of your party, you would do wise to follow the advise from your fellow party members and run a respectable campaign (no more Ayers, Rev Wright, or similar junk). When you are bleeding, it is best to put a band aid than to put acid on the wound.

Rob Johnson   October 21st, 2008 4:18 pm ET

The Powell endorsement seems to have already had a slight effect, and will probably be the straw that breaks McCain's back.

You also have to consider the "bandwagon effect." Everybody loves a winner, and as it becomes clearer that Obama is headed for victory, people will start breaking towards him so they can back the winning team. His final margin could be in double digits.

During the height of Palinmania, after the GOP convention, I was genuinely worried for the future of America, not to mention the sanity of the average American. Thank God we woke up in time! :)

Angelicious   October 21st, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Keep working, Obama supporters - let's get out the vote and not depend on what polls say. We can't stop till we're through the finish line and Obama is safely elected. With hard work, in January, we can begin to see the change we all want and need so desperately, and the damage the republicans have done to our country will be a thing of the past. We'll have to deal with the results of eight years of terrible hardship, but we will pull out of it and overcome the damage Bush and McCain and the rest of their gang have done to us. And Palin can get back to gutting harmless animals in Alaska.

Nancy in Atlanta   October 21st, 2008 4:17 pm ET

CNN, please make up your mind. The race is tightening? The race is close? Or Obama has a substantial lead in the polls. The last point seems to be te one that has been clear for quite some time. Clearly some in the media are trying to keep the "horse race" metaphor alive to boost ratings.

DICK WOLFSIE   October 21st, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Awesome. Just awesome.

Ex-mod-GOP for Obama   October 21st, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Good news, but remember to vote on Nov. 4. That's the only poll that matters.

Dark Wraith   October 21st, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Polls will not matter.

Then again, if 2000 and 2004 offer any lesson at all, neither will the will of the People.

In any event, CNN will be right there with the rest of the mainstream media to hail the outcome. If need be, the United States Supreme Court will be there to legitimize it, as well.

Let us then hope the economy is in such dire condition by election day that the GOP would prefer without much fuss to let the junior Senator from Illinois ascend to the throne of failed empire.

Nick, Portland, OR   October 21st, 2008 4:17 pm ET

joe plumber and joe 6 pack endorse obama

GM   October 21st, 2008 4:15 pm ET

I feel it is unfair to say that Obama is leading only because of the economic collapse. There are several factors:
1) His enormous ground operation – more of a political movement rather than an election campaign
2) Enormous voter enthusiasm
3) Activism on part of several organisations, on the ground and on the Internet
4) His solid performances in the debates, which have made voters more confident about his abilities
5) A high anti-Bush, anti-McCain, anti-Palin sentiment, primarily among independent voters and women.

I feel this point should be made more forcefully – its not just the economy.

RealityKing   October 21st, 2008 4:15 pm ET

As a 66 year old white republican woman, this was the first year I've ever donated to a campaign and felt so strongly about a candidate since JFK. McCain looking for a way to win without Colorado – so says a CNN report. They will need a GPS gadget with zoom lens plus night vision goggles to find this.

Bitter in Texas   October 21st, 2008 4:14 pm ET

There is only one Poll I'm worried about and that's the final one taken on Nov 4th. Got my ballot in hand and I'm casting it early for "That One"...Ya'all get out there and vote...Vote early! We don't want the Rethuglicans to steal this one from us!

Serious Voter   October 21st, 2008 4:14 pm ET

I can't take it anymore! I sent in my absentee application yesterday and will vote for Obama as soon as I get it. This election is too important to wait until Nov 4th. That's an eternity and just in case, I'm getting my vote in. I suggest you all who can vote early to do so immediately.

Shari, NY   October 21st, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Although the Republican jalopy is out of gas and the wheels are falling off, we must not be complacent. Onward and upward, Democrats!

Chelle in Fla   October 21st, 2008 4:13 pm ET

14 Days to Go! But who's counting...OBAMA 08!

Sue   October 21st, 2008 4:13 pm ET

. . . vote.

HOLDING MY BREATH   October 21st, 2008 4:13 pm ET

IF THIS DUDE TURNS OUT TOBE THE FLIP SIDE OF GEORGE BUSH I WILL CURSE ALL YOU LIBERALS AND DIVE OUT OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY BECAUSE YOU AND THE BIAS'D PRESS PUSHED THIS FEEL GOOD LOSER ON MY COUNTRY. I would have been quite happy as a white male, vet, upper middle income voter with Hillary. Therefore, Barack if you get in like McCain I will hold my breath for 4yrs and go from there.

2012 ;-) Hillary

Vkram   October 21st, 2008 4:13 pm ET

OBAMA '08

LIP   October 21st, 2008 4:13 pm ET

wow...CNN actually posted one of my comments and didn't censor it...lets go for two.
Why as it that all the other polls show Obama up by only 4%, but the CNN poll of polls shows so much more...trying to bait people into thinking Obama is way ahead , kind of like exit polls and trying to make people think they just may as well vote for the obvious winner?
For shame

Brian Rich   October 21st, 2008 4:13 pm ET

McCain thinks they are going to win PA to win the election. Sorry, not gonna happen.

This will be a landslide of epic proportions. Obama people – GO VOTE! We can vote early in most states, or at least request absentee ballots to mail in at our leisure – so VOTE!!!

Baze   October 21st, 2008 4:13 pm ET

What does McCain expect? He's resorted to such a divisive muck dwelling campaign that he's lost the faith and regard of the people.

ONE NATION

rob   October 21st, 2008 4:13 pm ET

of course he is–hes smart–presidential–commanding–has the answers–has knowledgeable people on his team and he's inclusive..thats what we Need right now....the complete opposite of the scary ticket

Phil   October 21st, 2008 4:13 pm ET

These polls don't matter. EVERYONE GET OUT AND VOTE NOW!! Don't let anyone stop you from voting. If Obama doesn't win by at least 10 pts there will be an easy attempt for the RNC to steal the election like they did in 2000. VOTE, VOTE, VOTE BECAUSE EVERY VOTE COUNTS!!!

tennisguypitt   October 21st, 2008 4:13 pm ET

National polls mean nothing, the state polls are what matters. GET OUT AND VOTE FELLOW OBAMA SUPPORTERS!

Horse race for the media and real clear path for the future of this wonderful rich country. VOTE WISELY!

My left foot   October 21st, 2008 4:12 pm ET

This is GREAT NEWS for Joe the fake plumber. Now he and McCain can tour the 'Pro America' parts of the country to pitch fork... I mean pitch their fake economic message as McCain numbers tank!

nattie   October 21st, 2008 4:12 pm ET

people are starting to know Obama is our next pres.its a fact

Independent but Leaning   October 21st, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Wow- the MSM is going to have egg on their faces on 11/4. I can't wait to hear the sputtering excuses for why the polling was so wrong and McCain won.

Rich   October 21st, 2008 4:12 pm ET

So McCain's nasty and devisive phone calls and stump speeches have done him no good.

McCrazy   October 21st, 2008 4:12 pm ET

People please......

John McCain has Obama right where he wants him.

CNN Please post this as i heard it on Larry King last night.

One Republican actually said if things stay as they are now, Obama takes Iowa and New Mexico, but McCain wins New Hampshire (which he is down 10 points in), McCain will win the presidency?

I was hoping he would explain exactly what math he used to figure that out, but he never did.

I loooove Republican Math.

Sarah Palin "Ready on Day 1-NOT"   October 21st, 2008 4:11 pm ET

Just as it should be!

Cammi317   October 21st, 2008 4:11 pm ET

YES WE CAN!

Pat   October 21st, 2008 4:11 pm ET

Wise up GOP, the people don't like negative campaigns and lies.

I was terribly offended by the phone messages you left on my phone this weekend, lies, lies, lies. How many ways do you have to be told that being on a charity board together doesn't equate "palling around with"

JV   October 21st, 2008 4:11 pm ET

Way to GO!...........Obama.

Lisa in Wasilla AK   October 21st, 2008 4:11 pm ET

Come on Obama-bots. Let's make this victory by double digits–a mandate by the American voter! VOTE NOW, VOTE OBAMA!!!

Obama Supporter   October 21st, 2008 4:11 pm ET

Good nite its over Mccain!!

Joe from Mahwah, NJ   October 21st, 2008 4:10 pm ET

It will be an honor to refer to Senator Obama as "Mr. President" post Election Day.

DMD, New York   October 21st, 2008 4:10 pm ET

Repeat from yesterday's posting, but all of you should really consider the message in this: ...I know I DON'T want to break my back bringing in hard earned money only to have the wealth spread around and my money goes to some lazy bum down the street who will just abuse the system and never gets off hs/her duff to get a job!!! And do you not think that if taxes are only going to be raised on the rich and corporations, that prices we pay as consumers will also rise, and so yes….the little tax payer guys like us are the ones where the money will come from. I am voting McCain/Palin as I say NO to Obama's socialism/marxism or whatever it is he's spewing.

Praetorian   October 21st, 2008 4:10 pm ET

As a US Navy leader–I'm sure McCain is suffering from being pulled under by the "boat anchor" around his neck–namely Sarah Palin and George Bush.

Rodger   October 21st, 2008 4:10 pm ET

The closer we get to November 4th, the greater the divide! The final numbers are going to be 15-20% more votes for Obama!!!!

Independent from CT   October 21st, 2008 4:10 pm ET

Wait – I thought McCain was SURGING and the race was TIGHTENING?? Oh, that's right. That only fit your narrative for that day. Must suck when the real numbers say something completely different. lololol

Ahhhhhh the mainstream press. So 'funny'.

A. Rohani   October 21st, 2008 4:10 pm ET

That's good news.

Anne E.   October 21st, 2008 4:10 pm ET

Here's to a widening lead!
I so wish that Sen. Obama could take the time he needs to be with his grandmother, not just the two days. But don't worry, Senator - we've got your back and we'll keep up the momentum, and Sen. Biden will keep up the Joe-mentum!

BARACK ON!

LIP   October 21st, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Do you suppose that anyone will mention the poll taken of military people, all branches and that they were 64% in favor of McCain...I doubt you will see this on CNN
